"Flotation of metal-organic precipitate in column is sensible to the hydrodynamic conditions determined by the diameter and dispersion of rising bubbles. Thus, the dissipation energy in the system resulting of ratio between superficial fluid velocities (gas and feed) in the column is main parameter for precipitate flotation in pilot or industrial scales. The knowledge of aggregate structure can lead to better understanding and control of many solid-liquid separation processes (sedimentation, filtration, thickening and flotation). Many authors highlight the importance of structural properties (i.e. floc density) for different industrial applications.This approach was applied to achieve the flotation of molybdenum precipitate obtained with organic collector a- benzoin oxime for molar ratio 1:2. Flotation tests were carried out at lab and pilot scale with rigorous control of the size distribution of bubbles and the values of dissipation energy in the systems.Structural evolution of Mo precipitate and the destruction phenomenon were described by using of the various fractal dimensions, which were deduced from experimental data of laser sizer devices and optic microscopy pictures of precipitate. The boundary fractal dimensions Df of large aggregates allows the detection of a structural scaled organisation of the precipitate flocs (elementary germs-microflocs-flocs). The fractal dimension of the particle mass distribution Dm=1.94+/-0.15 suggests, for the floc structure, a cluster-cluster aggregation process either with structuration or breakage phases.The destruction process characterised by a fractal dimension Dg controls the final size distribution. The floc destruction occurs for the lowest values of the dissipation energy (0.02 – 0.05 W/kg). The relation between Dg and the system dissipation energy Et (for various energy E dissipated in the agitation cell) involves the different breakage mechanisms of aggregates in function of the aggregation bonds (Fig. 1).Besides, the destruction of floc produces very fine particles (elementary germs or/and microfloc according to E), and thus induces the difficulties of bubble-particle attachment during the precipitate flotation in column. Yet, very small bubbles, which increase the collision probability, would make the flotation feed rate decrease. The optima ratio between superficial gas and feed velocities are determined for bubble size and flotation results control at pilot scale. Thus, it is possible to providing the catastrophically changes of precipitate column flotation by using the following established experimental relation: the mean diameter d of the flocs under the action of dissipated energy Et follows a power like law (d~Et -0.5). This allows estimating the size distribution of flocs for the E values which can appear in column."

THE close-packed-hexagonal structure of mag-J- nesium is converted to a ductile and malleable body-centered-cubic lattice by the addition of lithium in excess of 10 pct. Further, the density of magnesium or magnesium-base alloys is decreased by additions of lithium. The practical possibilities of such alloys as a basis for uniquely light, malleable, and ductile structural materials were pointed out by Dean in 1944' and by Hume-Rothery in 1945.2 It was apparent to these investigators, however, that more complex compositions would be required if strengths sufficient for structural applications were to be developed in these alloys. In a search for strengthening additions, various investigators w have examined a number of the ternary and more complex alloys containing magnesium and lithium. An investigation of the fundamental characteristics of these alloys was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. The investigation was initiated with a study of the magnesium-rich corner of the equilibrium diagram for the ternary system, Mg-Li-Al. The following data from published investigations of Mg-Li-A1 alloys were available: 1—a description of isothermal sections at 20" and 400°C through the Mg-Li-A1 constitution diagram by F. I. Shamrai;' 2—a diagram by P. D. Frost et al." showing approximate phase relationships at 700°F for a number of the Mg-Li-A1 alloys; and 3—diagrams showing the constitution at 500" and 700°F for the Mg-Li-A1 alloy system published by A. Jones et al.' Where compositions and temperatures permit comparison, these diagrams show disagreement. The 700°F isotherms of Frost and Jones differ only in the placement of the phase boundaries. But Sham-rai's 400°C (752°F) isotherm shows a variation in phases as well as in phase boundaries. Although rigid comparison of these different isothermal sections might not be justifiable, it seems impossible to reconcile Shamrai's construction with the isotherms of Frost or Jones. The isothermal sections presented in this paper were prepared to determine compositions which might be suitable for age hardening and to develop the general slope and placement of the various phase boundaries in the magnesium-rich corner of the diagram. Sections at 375", 200°, and 100°C were selected for investigation. In constructing these sections, the solubility of aluminum in magnesium, as reported by W. L. Fink and L. A. Willey Vn 1948, was used at the binary Mg-A1 boundary and the solubility of lithium in magnesium was obtained from the equilibrium diagram for that system as reported by G. F. Sager and B. J. Nelson" in the same year. The solubility of magnesium in lithium was determined experimentally and conforms in general to data reported by P. Saldau and F. Shamrai." Parameters for AlLi and MgI7A1, were taken from American Society for Testing Materials X-ray diffraction data cards. Experimental Procedures Although the isothermal sections presented in this paper are not unusually complex, the experimental techniques involved in their construction are made extremely difficult by the relatively high vapor pressure of lithium and the great chemical activity of both magnesium and lithium. Because of these characteristics, which make precise control of the composition of equilibrium-treated filings practically impossible, the disappearing phase method was used in preference to the parametric method in conjunction with metallographic studies. The alloys used in this investigation were melted and cast in an atmosphere of helium using a tilting-type furnace which enclosed a steel crucible and mold in a single unit. Each portion of the charge (500 to 600 g) was cleaned carefully just before placing it in the crucible; and the charge, crucible, and entire melting apparatus were evacuated and then washed with grade A helium while preheating to approximately 100°C. The alloys were melted and chill cast in an atmosphere of helium. Alloys prepared in this way were relatively free from inclusions and a fluxing treatment was considered unnecessary. The cylindrical ingots obtained were scalped and then reduced 96 pct in area by direct extrusion, yielding % in. diam rod. Sections of the rod, approximately 3 in. long, were given equilibrium heat treatments and then sampled for metallographic examination, X-ray diffraction study, and chemical analysis. The surface of each equilibrium-treated rod was machined to a depth sufficient to insure removal of contaminated material before samples for chemical analysis or X-ray diffraction study were obtained, and all decisions on microstructure were based on the examination of the central portion of the metallographic specimen. All specimens homogenized at 375°C were analyzed after this equilibrium heat treatment. When the composition of an alloy placed it in a critical area of the 200" or 100°C isothermal section, a check chemical analysis was made on a sample taken from the alloy specimen as-heat-treated at the particular temperature. Standard chemical procedures of gravimetric analysis were used in the determination of magnesium and aluminum; lithium, potassium, and sodium were determined by flame photometer methods

Currently a critical activity for slopes stability and safety in mining is pre-split blasting to reduce damage from trim blast. Most common explosive used are based on packaged explosives, with 1 ½ in diameter cartridges initiated by detonating cord. Traditional loading process requires a significant amount of trained personnel, which in our application context could take up to 20 blasters. When pre-split blast is scheduled, it usually reduces the availability of the blasters on the total loading services at site which are also demanded to have production blasting ready at same 12-hour shift daylight time.

An improved technique is described for the accurate determination of melting points of metals in the temperature range 1500' to 2500°C. The improvements consist of gradient heating and refinements in cavity preparation to obtain true black-body conditions. The melting point of hafnium, as determined by this method, is set at 2222°±30°C. This is over 200°C higher than one of the values reported earlier. Discrepancies in the previously reported values for the melting point of hafnium are explained. The melting points of zirconium and titanium are found to be 1855O±15OC and 1668°±10°C, respectively. Reproducibility of results was ±3OC. PRIMARILY, this report is being made to correct a 1975o±25oC1 value for the melting point of hafnium, and to present an improved method for melting point determination. As a matter of interest, the technique was also applied to determining the melting point of zirconium and titanium. There is a wide difference in the melting point of hafnium as reported by competent investigators. DeBoer and Fast' reported a value of 2230°±500C, and later work of McPherson, as reported by Aden-stedt, placed the melting point at 1975o±25oC. Zwikker" calculated that the melting point was 2430°C. In resolving this discrepancy, improvements were made in the procedure for determining the melting points of refractory metals in the range 1500" to 2500°C. Special techniques are necessary to determine the melting point of these metals accurately. Since the metals oxidize in air above 900oC, the determinations must be carried out in an inert gas or vacuum. Also, every known refractory contaminates them to some extent. In addition, the attainment of true black-body conditions is always difficult. DeBoer and Fast actually determined the melting point of Hf-Zr as-deposited iodide process alloys and extrapolated to 100 pet Hf. McPherson employed a tungsten wire suspension similar to that described by Schramm, Gordon, and Kaufmann,1 and used hafnium metal produced by the iodide process. There was no apparent reason for the wide spread in melting points, since the quality of the metal was very good and the work was under the direction of highly competent investigators. Retracing some of this work revealed one understandable error in the case of hafnium, and led to development of an improved technique for determining melting points of reactive metals in the range 1500" to 2500°C. Material Crystal bar hafnium, zirconium, and titanium were used for this work, with analyses as shown in Table I. The hafnium was of the highest purity that has been prepared, though not as pure as the zirconium and titanium. At the instigation of the Pittsburgh Area Office of the AEC, a special lot of Hfo2 was purified, converted to the tetraflouride, and bomb-reduced with calcium, all at the Iowa State College Laboratories. This crude hafnium metal was then refined by the iodide process at the Foote Mineral Co. All specimens were cut with a Sic wheel, ground, pickled, and dried carefully before use. Procedure General Tungsten Suspension Method—In this method, a small specimen is suspended by a fine tungsten wire in a slender, induction-heated tungsten or tantalum cylinder, all under vacuum. The melting point is determined by heating the specimen slowly while observing it with an optical pyrometer focused upon a portion of the specimen that radiates as a black body. This means that there should be no reflected radiation, either from colder objects near the pyrometer or from hotter surfaces. The induction heater would be the only hotter object and, if it is slender enough, the specimen will attain the same temperature. Often a slender hole is drilled into the specimen as a source of black-body radiation. This was the general method used by McPherson in obtaining his value of 1975°C for the melting point of hafnium. SILICON is the most commonly used deoxidizer and an important alloying element in steelmak-ing; hence a detailed study of this element in liquid iron containing oxygen is of considerable interest. The equilibrium between silicon and oxygen in liquid iron has been studied by a number of investigators but generally with inconclusive or incomplete results. The variation of the activity coefficients of silicon and oxygen with composition is entirely unknown. Published investigations deal with the reaction of dissolved oxygen with silicon in liquid iron and the results are expressed in terms of a deoxidation product. For consistency and convenience in comparison of the published information, the deoxidation product as referred to the following reaction is expressed in terms of the percentage by weight of silicon and oxygen in the melt in equilibrium with solid silica: SiO (s) = Si + 2 O; K'l = [% Si] [% 012 [I] Theoretical attempts to calculate the deoxidation constant for silicon in liquid iron from the free energies of various reactions yielded results which were invariably lower than the experimental values. Thus, the deoxidation "constants" calculated by McCance,1,2 Feild,3 Schenck, and Chipman were of the order of 10, which is below the experimental values by a factor of more than 10. Experiments of Herty and coworkers" in the laboratory and steel plant resulted in an average deoxidation constant of 0.82x10 ' at about 1600°C. The technique employed in their investigation was crude and the reported temperature was quite uncertain. The concentration of silicon was obtained by subtracting silicon in the inclusions from the total. Since at least some of the inclusions resulting from chilling must represent a fraction of the silicon in solution at high temperatures, such a subtraction is not justifiable. Results of Schenck4 for K'1 from acid open-hearth plant data yielded a value of 2.8x10-5, which was later revised as 1.24x10 at 1600°C. Similarly Schenck and Bruggemann7 obtained 1.76x10-5 at 1600OC. The discrepancies and errors involved in the acid open-hearth plant data as compared with the results of more reliable laboratory techniques were attributed by these authors to the lack of equilibrium and the impurities in liquid metal and slag, and are sufficiently discussed elsewhere." Korber and Oelsen" investigated the relation between dissolved oxygen and silicon in liquid iron covered with silica-saturated slags containing varying concentrations of MnO and FeO. The deoxidation products obtained by their method scatter considerably, and their chosen average values of 1.34x10, 3.6x10-5, and 10.6x10-5 1550°, 1600°, and 1650°C, respectively, represent the best experimental results which were available until quite recently. Darken's10 plant data from a steel bath agree approximately with their data at 1575° to 1625°C. Zapffe and Sims" investigated the reaction of H2O and H2 with liquid iron containing less than 1 pct Si and obtained deoxidation products varying by a factor of more than 20. Inadequate gas-metal contact and lack of stirring in the metal bath should require a longer period of time than the 1 to 5.5 hr which they allowed for the attainment of equilibrium. Furthermore, their oxygen analyses were incomplete and irregular and confined to a few unsatisfactory preliminary samples. Their results did indeed indicate that the activity coefficient of oxygen is decreased by the presence of silicon, although they made no such simple statement. They chose to attempt to account for their anomalous data by the unlikely hypothesis that SiO is dissolved in the melt. Hilty and Crafts" investigated the reaction of liquid iron with acid slags under an atmosphere of argon, making careful determinations of silicon and oxygen contents at several temperatures. Despite erroneous interpretation of the data at very low silicon concentrations, their data represent the most dependable information on this equilibrium that has been published. In the range 0.1 to 1.0 pct Si, their data yield the following values for the deoxidation product: 1.6x10-5, 3.0x10- ', and 5.3x10 at 1550°, 1600°, and 1650°C, respectively. Based on analysis of the evolutionary history of the valley in Baihetan, the mechanism of asymmetrical evolution, gradual migration-incision evolved from left bank to the right, is revealed in Baihetan river valleys. The process of in-situ stress evolution is carried out by using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). Consequently, the numerical results which indicate the main regulations of that stress field are as follow: (1) The phenomenon termed "high in-situ stress fold" appears in the bottom of the valley. With the maximum principal stress being 28-34 MPa, the stress increases significantly at a vertical depth of approximately 130 m. (2) The in-situ stress presents zonal distribution along the bank slope. It is apparent that the in-situ stress field consists of stress relaxation zone (SRZ), stress concentration zone (SCZ) and original stress zone (OSZ). The horizontal depth of stress relaxation zone varies from the left bank (roughly 200 m) to the right (about 120 m). Furthermore, the stress evolution of the left bank slope is studied. As a result, it is found that asymmetrical erosion contributes to the difference of the in-situ stress distribution as a critical factor, between the left bank and the right. And for an asymmetrical valley, the evolutionary process of in-situ stress field is a circular procedure, which includes the incision of valley, the accumulation of landslides and the migration of valley.

As many owners and designers discover and demand the consistent high quality characteristics of this type of geomembrane due to the unique manufacturing process, the use of these materials in new mines, mine expansions and final closure designs has steadily increased. Structured liner materials are available for double lined and final cover systems and are revolutionizing the way ponds, pads and final closures are constructed. This paper will discuss the structured or embossed geomembrane concept and manufacturing process. Additionally, the paper will present comparative testing illustrating the major advantages of using this type of product in these types of applications. Both technical and economic advantages are illustrated. The cost savings include lower installation costs, less material used, and third party inspection times not to mention better performance. These new systems will be presented.

The Homestake-New Mexico Partners consist of Homestake Mining Company of Lead, South Dakota; Rio de Ore Uranium Mines, Inc; United Western Minerals Company; White, Weld and Company; J.H. Whitney; San Jacinto Petroleum Corporation; and Clyde Osborn, Homestake Mining Company is the general partner, the others are limited partners. The Rio de Ore Uranium Mines, Inc. has. a mine in the Ambrosia Lake area; this was the first mine to go into production in this area. The United Western Minerals Company also has a mine in the Ambrosia Lake which is operated as a "farm out" from the San Jacinto Petroleum Corporation. These mines are the principal sources of ore for the mill. This group was the first to obtain a contract with AEC to make uranium concentrate from Ambrosia Lake ores and the first to have a mill in operation specifically for these ores. With Clyde Osborn as the sparkplug and co-ordinator holding the ore suppliers of, this group together, a contract with AEC was agreed on as to its essential points by mid-summer, 1956, At that time, there was no general partner and no financing, so me formal contract could be signed. By December, 1956 when the contract was signed and the present partnership officially formed, much of the basic engineering was done and purchasing of main elements of the mill waited on the formalizing of agreements, at the specifications and sizes agreed on previously. Ground for the mill was broken in April, 1957. The sampling plant went into operation in October and ore was first fed to the ball mills on February 5, 1958, ten months after construction actually started. Filling of the circuit with sodium carbonate bicarbonate solution had begun a week before that.

G-ResourcesÆ Martabe Mine in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a US$700 M world-class and world-scale operation in a country which, with a few notable smaller scale exceptions, has had no significant hard rock mining development in more than ten years.The mine was commissioned in the middle part of 2012 and poured first gold on 24 July. At full production Martabe will produce 250 000 oz/a of gold and 2 - 3 Moz/a of silver at cash costs in the lowest quartile. The mine location is on the west coast of North Sumatra, which experiences annual rainfall of 4 m with no notable dry season, adjacent to seismically active fault zones, and relatively close to a rural community of 31 000 people with no significant industrial experience.The management team has successfully forged strong links with the various government departments and levels in Jakarta, North Sumatra Province and the local Regencies; developed long-term relationships with the various community groups within the local district of Batangtoru to build a sustainable social licence; has dealt with the physical and environmental challenges presented by the project location, and has successfully raised more than US$900 M over a period of three years for the original acquisition then the development of the project.Whilst in its infancy of operation, the mine is set up to deliver a long-term sustainable future for the company, the shareholders, and the people of Batangtoru and all stakeholders generally. The quality of the project execution and commitment by the company will ensure that maximum value can be delivered from Martabe, not just for the current mine life but from the significant exploration potential that exists on the large tenement area that the company has access to for 30 plus years.This paper will deal with the physical challenges associated with the design, the Indonesian government regulatory requirements for mine development, the social aspects of building a world-class project in a developing area, the in-country commitment necessary for any project development anywhere in the world and the successful funding arrangements for the mine development.CITATION:Albert, P G, Siahaan, L H D and Duffy, T J V, 2012. (written discussiont).-Professor Sauveur refers to the International Aircraft Standards Board in terns that would indicate his non-familiarity with, the organization and the working of this Board which, of course, is excusable on account of Professor Sauveur's absence in Europe at the time. He implies .that the work of this Board was entirely dominated by American interests, whereas diametrically the opposite was the case. The Board, was organized for the purpose of facilitating purchase in the United States, on the basis of common specifications, by the Allied air, services in the United States, and the Board performed a very valuable service in unify-ing the specifications of Italy, Great Britain, France, Canada, and the United States for such purposes. The proceedings of the Board were car-ried out on the basis of unanimous agreement of the representatives of the five countries and all the members from each of the countries were technical specialists or, had the advice of technical assistants. It would be difficult to find an instance of greater unity of purpose, readiness to' compromise, and efficient production than was shown by this Board, which produced seventy-eight specifications, in the preparation of which representative American manufacturers appeared before the Board.

Microstructural studies of a Mg-10.3 pct Al alloy showed that discontinuous precipitation during aging multiplies the grain boundary area available for easy deformation in elevated temperature creep. An increase of strain rate for a 6.2 pct Al alloy at 400°F, where precipitation and creep are concurrent, caused an increase in the volume percentage discontinuously precipitated at the completion of the process. The relatively poor elevated temperature creep resistance of heat treated alloys of the Mg-AI-Zn type was explained in these structural terms. C resistance of the heat treatable Mg-A1 based alloys is poor compared to that of Mg-Ce based alloys. While the latter show a continuous precipitate, Mg-A1 alloys prefer a discontinuous precipitate at grain boundaries. '.:' It has been concluded that the excellent creep resistance of Mg-Ce alloys was primarily due to the continuous precipitation which especially localized at the grain boundaries.' The purpose of the present investigation was to obtain a parallel correlation, if such exists, between the poor creep resistance and the state of precipitation in Mg-A1 alloys. Discontinuous precipitation produces about three times as many true grain boundaries as originally existed. This microstructure would be expected to have a marked influence in creep, where quantity of grain boundary area is important. Experimental Procedure The two experimental alloys contained 6.2 and 10.3 pct Al. They were made from electrolytic magnesium by alloying under flux and casting in 3 in. diam permanent molds. The ingots were extruded into 1 1/4 x 1/8 in. flat stock under the following conditions: billet preheat 700°F (2 hr), container and die temperature 700°F, speed 3 fpm, and area reduction ratio 45:1. The creep specimens were machined from blanks which had been solution heat treated 24 hr at 770°F and aged 16 hr at 400°F. Attempts were made to control the grain size as closely as possible for extruded stock. The grain size after solution heat treatment was about two thousandths of an inch for the 6.2 and five thousandths for the 10.3 pct Al alloy.

Keywords: Tantalum capacitor, Scrap, Recovery, Titanium, Chlorination A recycling process for tantalum from capacitor scraps using an oxidation process followed by mechanical separation and chemical treatment was investigated. This study demonstrates that sintered tantalum electrodes inside the capacitor scraps can be mechanically collected after the oxidation of the scraps in air, and high-purity tantalum oxide powder (Ta2O5) was efficiently recovered after chemical treatment. By reducing the Ta2O5 obtained through magnesiothermic reduction, tantalum powder with 99 mass-% purity was obtained. Using the chlorination for tantalum recovery was also investigated, and the tantalum or tantalum compounds were reacted with chloride wastes such as FeClx. It was found that tantalum was effectively separated and purified when tantalum powder is reacted with FeClx at 1100 K under an argon atmosphere. This recycling process utilizing chloride scrap has now been extended to other reactive metals such as titanium.

Several glacial episodes have been distinguished in the Shotover Valley. These produced fluvioglacial aggradational deposits downvalley from the terminii, commonly with well-preserved terrace treads, as exemplified near Skippers. Chronological links can be determined between the Shotover tills and sediments and assessed equivalent deposits in the Wakatipu Basin/Kawarau Valley region through axial valley profiling. Constructed relationships suggest older Shotover events were probably large and left little detrital deposits within the valley. In contrast, the younger advances were smaller and valley-constrained. They are modelled as being wholly of Waimea or Otira Glaciation age, advances from the latter period producing the visually distinctive flights of terraceremnants. Both the terraces and the inner gorge, now occupied by the Shotover River, have been extensively worked for alluvial gold. Enrichments in the former environment have predominantly been as bottom or intermediate lags produced during degradation phases of catchment erosion. Surface lags have been locally targeted. Placer mining in terrace areas involved both tunnelling and sluicing techniques. In the modem river the greatest concentrations were on the schist or false bottoms, although flood gold has always contributed to the returns. Placer mining techniques here were highly variable.

The paper describes the application of the logarithmic wedge sector method of quantitative spectrography to the estimation of commonly occurring minor impurities in crude and refined tin. Both arc and spark methods of emission were employed and with the former a new device was used to overcome difficulties arising from the low melting point of the metal. The impurities investigated included antimony, arsenic, bismuth, copper, iron, lead, and zinc, their concentrations lying, in general, between 0.01 and 0.50 per cent. The results obtained show that the method may be usefully employed for the estimation of bismuth, copper, iron, lead, and zinc, in amounts ranging from 0.50 per cent to well below 0.01 per cent. Arsenic and antimony, however, could not be estimated in amounts less than 0.03 and 0.07 per cent respectively. Out of a total of 116 estimations by arc and spark emission, in 96 the errors were less than 5 per cent of the total quantity of the element present, whereas in the remaining twenty, the errors lay between 5 and 25 per cent. We tend to overestimate the volume of water used to process ore and the evaporation from tailings and heap leach stockpiles. During mine operation, a significant portion of the water collected from onsite water management systems is consumed and recycled by ore processing and lesser portion discharged to the environment. When mining and processing cease, however, the mine site water balance is altered and the real effort and cost associated with managing and disposing of excess mine-influenced water becomes evident. As these flows can no longer be recycled and may not be suitable for discharge to the environment, the cost of dealing with them can comprise a significant portion of the post-mining liability. The problem of dealing with large volumes of mine affected water has the potential to become worse in the future due to the established trend of lower grades which require more water per unit of mineral processing. As a result, future mines may be expected to have greater water needs and problems than we experience today.This paper discusses various aspects about how water usage changes when a mine transitions from operation to closure based on observations and numerical simulations of made with site-wide water balance models. The intention is to provide general considerations for mine operations in planning for end of mine life and post-mining care and maintenance.

The paper point out some reasons why contract mining should not achieve the same success in Latin America as it has in Australia. In this sense, any reasons are: the size of operation, mining industry employees bonus scheme, the privatization of nationalized mining assets, general sales tax and the mining unions. Therefore, great deal depends on the attitude or "mindset" of a company's employees. lt is strongly my view that the attitude with which a contractor approaches a job will give rise to a superior mindset amongst its employees when comparad to those from most mining companies. The value of this cultural difference is significant and should never be underestimated. lmportantly, it doesnot only manifest itself in a more productive workplace: it is invariably the case in Australia that the safety achievements of contract miners are superior to those generally expected from the mining industry at large.

Laser coatings are used for a wide variety of applications. TiB2/Ni intermetallic matrix composite coatings were fabricated on Al-substrate by a high power Rofin Sinar Nd: YAG solid-state laser. The characterization of the coatings was carried out by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical study of the laser coatings in 3.65 per cent NaCl at room temperature revealed that with very high weight proportion of nickel the corrosion resistance of the coatings deteriorated due the presence of AlB10 phase. 50 wt per cent TiB2+50 wt per cent Ni laser coatings exhibited the highest corrosion resistance in test solution. For a variety of reasons, the need for automation of underground mining equipment is growing dramatically, e.g., improved safety and health, availability of labor, deeper mines, and desire for more focused excavation. While there has been tremendous progress made in this direction, much needs to be done to reach the holy grail of an autonomous mining machine. This paper reviews a number of technological developments and presents research and development needs for future development. A report on our current project for the Western Mining Resource Center at CSM is included.

Recovery performance may be measured in absolute terms or in relative ones that relate the actual mining outcome to what was expected. Consideration is possible in terms of the control exercised by the operator. The eventual mineral output is the only figure known with complete certainty. The paradox is that, while performance is judged against the sampling, the reverse also applies. The R/Efactor and its four component factors are the best overall measures of performance. The choice of equipment for sampling and mining is very important. The sampling process may introduce errors and the sample density may lead to poor mining block selection. The resulting recovery performance is most visible on a regression curve. Changes in the cutoff grade must also be taken into account to avoid unrealistic production targets. Estimation methods incorporating different mathematical assumptions and techniques may cause over-or underestimation of the grade and volume. If the selective ability of the mining equipment does not match the size of the reserve blocks, the performance will be compromised. The treatment plant efficiency, the throughput rate and the degree of bedrock clean-up also affect performance. The maximization of throughput does not yield the optimum results. Marine conditions, which are outside the operator's control, affect not only operational availability but also performance. Examples are provided from actual operations for various commodities, showing the relative magnitude of the different effects upon performance.
