In this study the effects of Si content on mechanical and thermal fatigue properties of Al-Si casting alloys were investigated. Repeated heating and cooling cycles were applied on the samples at 230°C to develop thermal fatigue cracks. Crack growth mechanisms and microstructural influences were investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Thermal fatigue behaviors were improved successively by increasing of silicon content up to 7wt%. However, addition of more than 9wt% silicon decreased the thermal shock resistance of the alloy. Silicon contents of about 9wt% presented the best mechanical and thermal fatigue resistance in the alloy.

Only a limited number of mass and infrared reference spectra of high purity unsaturated hydrocarbons and oxygenates are presently available in the literature. To aid Bureau of Mines research programs requiring such references, 64 mass spectra and 70 infrared spectra were obtained and are reported. The individual compounds, acquired from commercial sources, were purified by preparatory gas chromatography. Purity determinations were made using a combination of analytical gas chromatography, microhydrogenation, and catalytic deoxygenation. These spectra will aid spectroscopists in the identification of compounds of the types reported.

The Mining industry faces many challenges, one of which is the demand to communicate over a variety of media, be it visual, sound, voice, data or any combination. Over the years multiple infrastructures have been put in place to overcome environmental obstacles and address these communication needs. A mine is an aggressive environment for electronic equipment and as such only the best quality equipment can perform under those special conditions of e.g. temperature, dust and humidity. Siemens Canada and its partner LComm will discuss a mining solution using a unique combination of technologies based on fibre optics, standard communication interfaces, passive antenna infrastructure and wireless services. The presentation looks at maximizing the use of infrastructure, reducing costs, addressing difficulty of communications coverage above and below the surface and the capability to future proof the capital investment as new requirements and applications are identified. An observation that is finding fresh confirmation in the leadership of the Allied Nations is "When the need arises, a man will rise to fill it." Much the same can be said of industrial advances in the current emergency. Events and circumstances have created needs for new materials and stimulated the inventive genius of man to fill them. The timely development of fibrous-glass manufacture, in relation to present war needs, is a case in point. Historical Summary It is probable that the first glass fibers produced by the hand of man were made about 4000 years ago. Successful production of glass fibers for manifold industrial and military uses, on any scale that could begin to meet present needs, has a history spanning a scant four years. The American processes that brought this young industry into being were developed between the years 1931 and 1937; research and manufacturing efforts were consolidated to create a commercially satisfactory operation as late as November 1939. In the 40 months that have elapsed since then, the industry has achieved commercial importance, supplied immense quantities of materials for pre-war industrial expansion to meet "defense" and Lend-Lease needs, and now has reached such importance that it has come largely under the control of the War Production Board for equitable distribution of its major products among 13 claimant agencies. It is worthy of note, however, that the Bureau of Ships, Navy Department, began exploratory use of fibrous-glass products in 1932, within one year after the date of the first experimental trials of the new process. This early recognition of the military importance of fibrous glass gave impetus to further research work. The foregoing rapid scanning of historical development must be filled in, lest the. impression be created that glass fibers were suddenly created out of thin air, with no antecedent trials, failures, and partial successes. The actual history of glassmaking is lost in antiquity. Probably some nomadic tribesman found molten glass beneath the bed of a hot campfire built upon sand of the proper composition. If his curiosity led him to poke the glowing, viscous pool with a green-wood stick or some handy weapon, it is probable that he drew a glass fiber on the end of his implement. Molten glass has much the same consistency as honey or molasses; it strings out tenuously. Thus, it is quite possible that the first form of glass shaped by man's action was a glass fiber. Artisans in glass, throughout the long Direc- of glassmaking as an art> drew fibers from fine rods for many decorative applications, including "spun glass" decoration in beautiful stemware and the charming millefiori (glass flowers encased in solid glass), and even to create the blood vessels in glass eyes to match a bleary mate.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to observe the effect of cetane improvers upon nitrogen oxides concentration in diesel exhaust gas. Amyl nitrite and amyl nitrate were used as additives to the fuel used in a four-cycle, single cylinder type test engine. It was concluded that nitrogen oxide concentrations were not enhanced at fuel-air ratios above 0.03 pound of fuel per pound of air.

GENERAL GEOLOGY Coal is defined as a combustible rock that originated in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks returned to earth continue to provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust and upper mantle of the earth are made up of several large plates along which differential movement (primarily horizontal) takes place. Such movements, although small, are occurring today. These horizontal movements are accompanied by vertical movements causing important changes in the relative position of the continents and oceans. Re-entry protocols are a tactical approach for controlling risk after blasts or large events in seismically active mines. Based on the results of a survey on 18 seismically active mines, mostly in Ontario, current re-entry practices are summarized. Over half of the mines in Ontario use event decay rate analysis as their primary re-entry decision making parameter. We study in detail the applicability of the Omori?s law as an equation for describing the event decay rate for more than 250 mining-induced aftershock sequences in seven different environments. Practical guidelines for the use of the Omori equation as a re-entry criterion are proposed.

The decrepitation technique is a rapid means of measuring abundances, temperatures and to some extent the fluid compositions, of fluid inclusions in transparent and opaque minerals. The method has been used to investigate the hydrothermal fluid systems associated with gold mineralisation in the Tennant Creek, Pine Creek and Halls Creek Goldfields. At the Enterprise Mine, Pine Creek, several different stages of quartz veining are distinguished and within these, gradational changes in fluid temperatures and compositions help to define the centre and nature of the thermal system responsible for the mineralisation. In the surrounding Pine Creek region and at Tennant Creek and Halls Creek, the results were applied on a regional scale to characterize outcrops and aid in the discrimination between potentially mineral- ized and barren outcrops. The decrepitation method involves the heating of a small (lgm) sample of crushed and sized grains up to as high as 800 degrees celsius. During the heating the fluid inclu- sions within the grains develop sufficient internal pressure to physically burst, the temperature of such bursting being dependent on the type of fluid and the prevailing tem- perature at the time the inclusion was originally trapped. The resulting tabulation of the number of inclusion bursts per 10 degree temperature interval is plotted as a histogram of decrepitations versus tempera- ture and called a decrepigram. The decrepi- grams frequently show several distinct peaks at different temperatures which are caused by different populations of inclusions in the sample. The areas of the peaks indicate the abundances of inclusions in each population while the shape and mean temperature of the peak provides a guide to the type of fluids involved. Of particular importance in this study is the presence of decrepitation peaks at fairly low temperatures (around 2000 C. These are characteristic of C02 rich fluids which build up internal pressure very quickly when heated. The Enterprise Gold Mine at Pine Creek comprises a number of overlapping quartz vein systems hosted by Burrell Creek Formation sediments. The geology of this mine has been described at this conference by Dann and Delaney, who have defined several distinct stages of quartz veining based on structural, mineralogical and physical features of the veins. For this decrepitation study, 19 quartz samples from the mine and environs, including some from each stage of veining were collected. These results suggest that there are 4 major vein types, within 3 of which additional small variations can be discerned which are due to gradational changes in the temperatures and fluid compositions in the mine area.

"The Ninetyeast Ridge (NER) extends roughly N-S as a topographic feature for 5000 km, from 31° south to 10° north (Fig. 1) where it becomes buried beneath the Bengal Fan at its northern end. These two geographic characteristics make the NER an ideal natural laboratory for determining the influence of latitude and terrestrial input to ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crust formation and composition. In addition to study of geographic controls on crust composition, the NER is the largest feature in the Indian Ocean that may host crusts of economic interest.Crusts were collected from 9 of 33 dredge sites from 1.4° north to 26° south latitudes during the 2007 R.V. Roger Revelle Knox06 cruise. Nineteen samples were analyzed for 69 elements each. Nine bulk crusts and 10 layers from four crusts were analyzed. Three of the crusts sub-sampled for layers did not have the bulk crust analyzed and the weighted means for those layers were calculated to obtain bulk compositions. One sample was left out of the statistical analyses because it is phosphatized and chemically quite different from the other samples (Table 1).In order to determine changes in composition with latitude, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were calculated for the chemical dataset and latitude of dredge sites, as well as water depth. At the 95-99% confidence level, the following elements increase in crusts moving north along the NER: Mg, Ti, S, Cd, Ni, Tl, Mn, Ba, Co, Cu, In, Li, and Zn; and the following elements decrease northward: Fe, Fe/Mn, P, As, Sc, the rare earth elements plus yttrium (REY), Bi, Ge, and Pb. These correlations indicate that the iron oxyhydroxide component and its associated elements are more prevalent to the south, and the manganese-oxide phase and associated elements increase toward the north end of the NER. This change occurs between dredges D20 and D14 (Fig. 1), with crusts from D20 and south having Fe/Mn !1.0 and those north of D20 ""1.2, with the exception of the phosphatized crust. Crust composition also changes with water depth: Th, Ge, Pb, and the middle rare earth elements (REEs) increase with increasing water depth. Thorium commonly increases in deeper water crusts, which explains the higher Th concentrations in Atlantic and Indian ocean crusts in general compared with Pacific crusts (Fig. 2 and Hein et al., 2012), including the samples analyzed here with a mean water depth of 3584 m. However, water depth does not explain the latitudinal changes because the mean water depths of samples along the northern and southern segments of the NER are roughly comparable. Surprisingly, Si and Al, representing the aluminosilicate/detrital phase, do not correlate with latitude; that is as the ridge approaches and is buried by the Bengal Fan the Si and Al contents do not increase. However, overall, Si and Al have higher concentrations in NER crusts than in central Pacific crusts. Ba can be used as a proxy for primary productivity and statistically does increase to the north along the ridge in the direction of the equatorial zone of high biological productivity. Correlations of Mg, Li, and Zn with latitude may also reflect increased primary productivity at lower latitudes."

JAMES BOYD 29.1-STAFF-AND-LINE ORGANIZATION Industrial organizations are established primarily to coordinate the activities of many individuals working toward a specific goal. In mining, the goals can vary widely, and the skills necessary to reach them likewise will vary from operation to operation. It is essential to keep in mind the principal point that an organization embodies the necessary skills which supplement each other and achieve a given objective. Those who direct such an organization are grouped together as "management" and accept the responsibilities for the regulation, administration, supervision and guidance of the enterprise. Those who comprise the "administration" and have supervisory authority are referred to as the "executives." In the early days of mining it was common for one executive to exercise virtually complete control over the entire organization, and direct its operation from a central office. However, the science of management has advanced significantly since then. Mining organization administration now allocates increased authority and flexibility to those in direct-line responsibility, and organizes competent people in specialized fields to provide supervisors with guidance where it is needed in day-to-day operations. Few mining companies today are confined to one operation. Therefore, highly developed skills can be provided in the staff which assists management. This is known as staff-and-line organization, illustrated, in general, in Fig. 29-1. Each operation requires diverse skills for the carrying out of specific functions. The acquisition and training of those with such skills is an important operation in assembling organizations. An organization normally is modified to accommodate individuals rather than being a "hard and fast" mold into which people are fitted. The modern manager is inclined to organize to minimize central direction, with delegation to line executives, providing staff whose day-to-day operations, in cooperation with line executives, coordinate a continuing drive toward the organization's objectives. The staff officers, therefore, tend to become what could be described as parts of the president's brain, dealing with specific areas requiring certain skills. They do not necessarily direct operations, but watch them to be sure that the skills which they have themselves developed can be transmitted to line operations by persuasion rather than by direct authority. The elements of management requiring staff assignments are: 1. Planning, which, at staff level, is only a coordinating activity. Planning is done at all levels in the organization. 2. Engineering. 3. Finance. 4. Control. 5. Personnel and industrial relations, which set personnel policies, including salary plans and the means of handling relations with the unions. 6. Research, which, in a modern organization, is essential to progress and needs to be overseen at the top. 7. Legal staff to see that all operations of the company are provided with sound legal advice, and that the company's policies stay within the law.

Onsite hazardous waste processors often find obtaining a Treatment Storage and Disposal (TSD) permit one of their first major challenges. Some processors may spend the time and money required by the permitting process, only to find out later that a permit was not necessary. This paper will present and analyze four strategies that processors may use to avoid obtaining a TSD permit. Some facilities will be able to remove their waste streams from RCRA's oversight by ensuring the material is not "hazardous" waste. Parties that treat waste while it is in process may be able to avoid generating "waste" altogether. Certain treatment facilities have been specifically exempted by EPA. Finally, treatment of waste while it is in generator storage tanks may be allowed without a RCRA TSD permit. Hazardous waste point of generation, an important determination relating to these strategies, will also be discussed. Generators and processors will find this paper useful when evaluating their permit exemption potential

Synthetic spinel is proving to be a highly effective refractory for specific applications, but its cost limits applications. Formation of spinel from a raw material such as diaspore or bauxite could provide a suitable and less costly starting material. In the study reported here, finely ground (-325 mesh) diaspore from Missouri and bauxite from Guyana and China are combined with hardburned MgO (-325 mesh) in appropriate proportions to yield spinel and spinel with secondary phases. A classical sintering and creep study was completed, accompanied by a microstructure study to determine completeness of the reactions and morphologies of the reaction products.

The structural response of propped oil shale fractures was determined for each of two different grades of Green River oil shales (38.0 and 29.0 gpt) as they were heated in an inert atmosphere from ambient to subretorting temperatures (below those required for rapid pyrolysis of the organic matter). Small oil shale cores were propped apart by 3-mm glass beads to simulate a small cross section of a propped oil shale fracture between an injection and a producing well. These specimens were then heated at a uniform bate up to 800° F in a specially designed test cell under stress levels from 100 to 1,000 psi in biaxial and in triaxial confinement. Under the conditions of heat and compressive stress utilized in this study, all of the propped fractures in the two oil shales underwent structural deformation ranging from partial to complete collapse, as evidenced by proppant embedment. Structural collapse of induced fractures would in turn result in serious impairment or complete loss of the fracture flow capacities of the specimens. Results from this Bureau of Mines study indicate that underground retorting of Green River oil shale may be seriously impaired by loss of permeability when utilizing propped fractures in oil shales assaying more than 28 gpt.

A ArcelorMittal Tubarão vem trabalhando nos últimos dois anos na implantação de um sistema automatizado de julgamento da qualidade da superfície de bobinas laminadas a quente, juntamente com a ArcelorMittal Global R&D. Tal sistema é denominado CGSIS – Coil Grading Surface Inspection System – e tem a função de interpretar as ocorrências de defeitos superficiais, identificados por um sistema de inspeção automático através de câmeras CCD auxiliado por técnicas de visão artificial, à luz da necessidade requerida pela aplicação final do material. Todas as ações sugeridas pelo sistema são baseadas em regras de aplicação e nas informações obtidas do sistema de inspeção automático, requerendo para isso taxas de acerto de classificação de defeitos adequadas para uma boa tomada de decisão. Para tanto, várias melhorias foram necessárias, envolvendo questões de ambiente, desempenho, confiabilidade, disponibilidade e treinamento do sistema, para se obter com isso melhores níveis de detecção e acerto. Outras questões envolvidas em tal processo concernem às mudanças aplicadas a políticas já estabelecidas de julgamento e comunicação do novo sistema com os sistemas já existentes. Vários benefícios da implantação do projeto já estão sendo percebidos provenientes das etapas de preparação para a instalação e espera-se que após a operacionalização um ganho superior a R$320k entre redução de custo com pessoal, aproveitamento de material e redução de reclamações de clientes seja alcançado.

En 2012 se realizó un diagnóstico en Volcán Compañía Minera donde se identificó la necesidad de efectuar un cambio en dos frentes: Sistema de Gestión SSO y Líderes. El sistema se basó en cuatro pilares fundamentales y aplicó las siguientes herramientas: gestión de riesgos, condiciones, conocimiento y comportamiento. Dentro del pilar condiciones, se priorizó doce riesgos críticos para contener los accidentes mortales e incapacitantes. En ese sentido, el presente artículo describe la estrategia enfocada sobre la base del Cambio de Cultura en Seguridad aplicado a Volcán Compañía Minera como modelo sostenible que se fundamenta en una visión integrada. Esta estrategia influye sobre las personas, instalaciones, equipos, tecnología y sistemas de administración de seguridad y salud con un enfoque de contención de accidentes, a través de los elementos críticos presentes en el sistema de gestión.

Mineral discoveries and subsequent extraction have led to the establishment of many small communities, some major towns and a few cities . In Canada, such developments have essentially occurred without benefit of long-range regional or local planning. In the past, this was not a cause for concern. Now, however, rising expectations and reorientation of social values have placed increasing responsibility on government and industry to ensure the long-term viability of communities and regions. Such responsibility means large investments by government in infrastructure and by industry in extractive and processing plants. Uncertainty in the interpretation of ore reserve estimates becomes a critical factor. The traditional methods of reporting reserves - "proven", "probable" , "possible" - may be useful in individual mine production planning, but they are inadequate for planning industrial and public infrastructure, The need for a better information base is critical, with clear and precise definitions of what is being reported, but we are a long way from achieving it. The challenge is therefore to develop a closer professional relationship between government and industry and to tie mineral development to long-range regional strategies.

It is now well known that certain pig-irons give a considerably smaller percentage of sulphur when determined by evolution-methods than when determined by oxidation-methods. The most striking examplcs of such irons are those made either wholly or in large part from New Jersey magnetites containing more or less titanium. It is never safe to use an evolution-method on such iron; for it is quite common that the sulphur result by evolution is only one-half or even one-third as great as that obtained by oxidation. For this reason, evolution-methods should be discarded, except in the analysis of pig-irons known to contain the sulphur in a state of combination from which it is evolved as sulphuretted hydrogen on treatment with hydrochloric acid. A good example of an iron containing, in the residue, sulphur insoluble in hydrochloric acid having come to our attention, it was determined to try to isolate a suspected insoluble sulphide. A large piece of high-silicon gray-forge iron was accordingly selected as the most promising material to work on. This piece was dissolved slowly, through several months, in dilute hydrochloric acid, aided by the electric current, yielding a soft graphitic residue. The object of dissolving a mass of iron, instead of drillings, was to prevent the crushing, by the drill, of any insoluble crystalline compound that might be present. The first step in the preparation was to break up the graphitic material and put it through bolting-cloth of 157 meshes to the linear inch. This was done by crushing the mass under the fingers on the bolting-cloth fastened over the top of a beaker, while a stream of water from a wash-bottle washed the finer portions through the cloth. Sin embargo, esta actividad unitaria experimenta numerosos problemas operativos debido a la mala elección de la malla de perforación y del explosivo, lo cual causa sobre-excavación, mala fragmentación, dilución y pérdida de mineral, entre otros. El objetivo de este trabajo técnico es optimizar las actividades de perforación y voladura de la Unidad Minera San Rafael aplicando los modelos de rotura y predicción de cavidades.

Ground instability and subsequent rock falls are a major concern in underground mines. As a result, several mining companies are conducting risk assessments of the ground support installed in their mines. Risk assessment is now commonly used to provide mine operators with a systematic process to assess the strategic risks that could lead to injury to personnel or loss of production, and evaluate possible risk control measures. Risk assessments can be carried out to identify major hazards, assess the likelihood of occurrence and consequences of each hazard and estimate the level of risk. This process allows assessment of possible remediation actions to minimize the risk and likelihood of occurrence or mitigation of the consequences to a level that is reasonable and practical. This paper presents two practical mine applications of qualitative risk assessment of ground support to highlight the benefits of this process. Yearly or bi-yearly risk assessment of mine excavations can assist mine operators in prioritizing resources and areas that require support remediation. In addition, it provides a mechanism for proactive response to reduce potential risks associated with personnel safety, equipment safety and environmental impact. It also provides a baseline against which changes in ground condition can be compared and quantified.
