The performance of depletion-type reservoirs at the stage in which the gas is at such low pressure that gravity is essentially the sole driving force has been investigated both theoretically and by use of scaled models. A simple theory is developed which completely explains the scaled model experiments. It also agrees with some field data. When the range of production rates to be considered is less than 25, the theory predicts that the production rate decline curve for homogeneous reservoirs in which there is a free surface will be of the hyperbolic type with n = 2: The theory gives a physical significance to the parameter y. INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to determine a method for prediction of performance of reservoirs where gravity is the sole driving agent. Depletion-type reservoirs fall into this category after the pressure has fallen to some low value. Some examples of this type are found at Healdton ('Oklahoma), Oklahoma City (Oklahoma), Midway-Sunset (California), and East Coalinga (California). Generally the production rate per unit thickness is quite low in such reservoirs, with the conse- quence that this stage is sometimes called the stripper stage. However, per well production rates may be of the order of 50 B/D because of the considerable sand thickness open in some of the reservoirs. In the past, predictions of behavior of such reservoirs have been based on empirical extrapolation of the rate of production to the economic limit. Difficulties arise when new wells are drilled in the field or when production is artificially curtailed, since in such cases the decline rate of individual wells or leases changes and no clear trend can be detected. It was hoped that the present study would lead to improved methods for evaluation of such reservoirs. The study was initiated by building a scaled model for a particular field and by running a number of experiments on this model. Later a simple theory was developed which explained the laboratory results completely. The theory led, as shown below, to a hyperbolic-type decline equation which had been used previously' in a completely empirical manner. THEORY The General Case The problem to be treated here is the following: We are given a homogeneous cylindrical porous reservoir with exterior radius r, wellbore radius r., and height h,, containing, from the bottom up to a height hit oil, some gas, and interstitial water (see Fig. 1 A). The effect of Group VIII transition-element additions on the sintering of tungsten powders is shown to be dependent on the phase relationships of the particular tungsten-Group VIII metal alloy system. The acceleration of sintering with nickel additions is diminished by alloying nickel with copper which is known to diminish both the tungsten solubility in nickel and the solid-vapor surface energy. In work previously published on the effects of additions of Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, and Ir, which form solid solutions or intermediate phases of wide composition width with tungsten, sintering behavior is independent of element concentration beyond that concentration necessary to form a continuous layer on the surface of the tungsten powders employed. The sintering behavior of tungsten with additions of iron or cobalt, which form intermetallic compounds with tungsten, is highly dependent on addition-element concentration. Additions in excess of amounts necessary to form continuous layers lead to successively decreased sintering rates. The effects of certain Group VIII transition metals on the sintering rates of tungsten at temperatures below those at which a liquid phase would be predicted have recently been investigated by the present authors1-4 It was found that small additions of palladium, nickel, rhodium, platinum, and ruthenium accelerate the rate of tungsten sintering. Additions of iridium decelerated the rate of densification compared to that of pure tungsten in the same temperature range. In all cases the rate of densification changed with increasing amounts of these additions, up to those compositions at which a continuous layer was formed on the surfaces of the tungsten-powder particles. The rate of densification was then independent of further increases of the compositions of any of these addition elements. These observations were consistent with a sintering model in which the addition element formed an interface with tungsten in which tungsten dif-fusivity was either greater or less than its grain boundary self-diffusivity. Construction for the new 2.5 MGPD raw water intake project commenced December 2002. The project, initially designed as a 12' Ø concrete lined intake shaft,145' deep, with two offset 24" lake taps, 520' and 470' long was subsequently “value engineered” running the two lake taps through a single conduit. The offset for summer and winter pools was accomplished via a second shaft located at the lakes edge. Construction involved the use of blind drilling techniques for the shaft development and drill and blast techniques for the tunneling. All works were completed through extremely hard crystallized sandstone. The project came online August 12, 2004.

In my paper on "The Consumption of Fuel in the Taylor Gas-Producer Plants at the Aspen and Marsac Mills" (Trans., xxiii., 134), I mentioned that in the plant which I had designed for the Ontario mill, the gas-tubes were to be covered with thin, corrugated sheet-iron, over which a coating of asbestos-magnesia would be spread in order to effect a good insulation and keep the gas as hot as possible. At the Ontario mill, two Stetefeldt furnaces and two revolving driers are fired with gas. One furnace is connected with a Taylor producer of 5 feet diameter, and the other furnace and the two driers are heated by the gas from a Taylor producer of 7 feet diameter. In the latter case the gas-tubes are necessarily somewhat long, and the cleaning of them takes time. In order to prevent overheating of the tubes during that operation, it has been found advantageous not to provide them with an insulating covering. If a tube becomes red-hot at any place by the burning of soot, this is at once observed, and the tube is closed until it cools down. The tubes con-

The goal of the program is to develop a dust collector system mounted on a ranging drum or arm shearer which will: 1) reduce the respirable dust level of the shearer operator by at least 75 percent; 2) be easily and economically mounted on an existing shearer; and 3) will not, through modifications to the shearer, reduce its safety or productive capability. The development program consists of three phases covering the activities of the design of the dust collector system, fabricating and installing it on the ranging arm or drum shearer, and conducting underground field tests on the modified mining machine.

"INTRODUCTION Anyone who has had frequent occasion to compare methods of analysis and testing as employed in European countries with those used in the United States has felt the need of a table or graph giving the relationship between the units of measurement of finely powdered materials. Most of the few published comparisons include only two series of sieves and often require tedious interpolations to adapt the data of one series to the series more familiar to the reader. Series of wire-cloth square-mesh sieves in common I oratory and industrial use include: Institution of Mining and Metallurgy standard laboratory screens (I.M.M.); British Standards Institution standard for fine-mesh test sieves (B.S. or B.S.I.); Tyler standard sereer-scale sieves; United States standard sieve series; Deutsche Industrial-Nermen (DIN); and the standard control sieves of the Association Francaise de Normalisation (AFNOR). With the exception of the I.M.M. series in which the opening is equal to the diameter of the wire, the general proportions of the various series of sieves are similar. The size of British and American sieves is designated by the number of meshes or openings per linear inch or, more recently, by the number of microns per linear sieve opening. In a technical sense the word ""mesh"" is meaningless, unless the diameter of the wire is also given, so that the size of the opening can be determined. On the Continent sieves are designated either by the nunber of Mesh per linear centimeter or by the number of openings per square centimeter."

A study has been made of the creep behavior of ß-NiAl of stoichiometric composition in the temperature range 475" to 775°C. Single crystal tensile specimens were deformed under a constant applied load. From slip line studies and tensile axis rotations it was concluded that the crystals deformed by pencil-glide on (100) and (110) planes with a (100) slip direction. Electron microscope thin-film studies showed evidence for profuse cross-slip, and the dislocation Burgers vector was determined to be (100). There was no tendency for the dislocations to lie in definite slip planes, although a strong alignment of segments of edge dislocations was frequently seen. The activation energy for creep in the temperature range 475" and 775°C was judged to be much lower than that for creep at temperatures above 775°C. It is possible that the rate-controlling process is the thermally activated cross-slip of screw dislocations. In recent years considerable interest has developed in the possible use of high-melting-point intermediate phases for high-temperature applications necessitating good creep resistance. Ordered alloys such as Ni3A1, modified by alloying additions, have received particular attention, culminating in the recent development by Pratt and Whitney of single crystal turbine blades.' The intermediate phase NiAl has considerable theoretical interest from a creep standpoint because not only is it ordered up to the melting point (-1650°C at stoichiometry) but it contains a high concentration of structural vacancies on the aluminum-rich side of stoichiometry. These vacancies are known to exert a strengthening effect under some conditions,' but in addition they might be expected to affect high-temperature creep rates through dislocation climb. The present paper deals with the slip line and dislocation structures developed during creep of stoichiometric NiAl between 475" and 775C, and with possible attendant creep mechanisms. MATERIALS AND TEST TECHNIQUES NiAl ingots of stoichiometric composition were prepared by induction melting 99.996 pct A1 and 99.98 pct Ni (kindly provided by the Kaiser Aluminum Co. and the International Nickel Co., respectively) in 100 cc pure alumina crucibles in a helium atmosphere. No chemical melting flux was used in order to avoid con- tamination of the alloy. Each ingot was slowly direc-tionally solidified to avoid porosity and to produce very large grains up to 2 in. in length. In this way, ingots were obtained which were suitable for sectioning into single crystal creep specimens. Chemical analysis indicated that all alloys were within the range 49.6 0.3 at. pct Ni. For the present investigation, identical rectangular single crystal blanks were cut vertically from one particularly large crystal in an ingot using a series of three diamond cut-off wheels with appropriate spacers. Thus, all sliced crystals had the same orientation with the tensile axis parallel to the long side of the rectangle; the initial orientation of the tensile axis is shown as S, in Fig. 1. The blanks were homogenized at 1250 to 1300°C for 48 hr and subsequently cooled slowly to room temperature. A gage length of rectangular cross section and about 0.75 in. in length was prepared on each specimen using an electrolytic lathe and a dilute nitric/phosphoric acid electrolyte. The gage length cross section was 0.250 0.0005 in. by 0.040 ± 0.0005 in. Holes to accommodate tensile grips were electrolytically machined using a rotating acid jet. After creep testing, this same technique was used to cut discs for transmission electron microscopy. "This paper discusses the difficulties associated with the potential exploitation of the deep multi-seam resources east of the Daarby fault in the Waterberg coalfield. The resources occur at a depth greater than 250 m and the thickness of the coal is roughly 110 m, but the top 50 m comprises coal intercalated with shale and the bottom 60 m contains five seams with sandstone and shale partings. Various factors affecting multiple seam mining at these great depths are discussed with reference to lessons learned from local and international experience on multi-seam mining. Field geological and geotechnical data was utilized to assess the stability of the roof of the seams. There is no specific rock mass rating for the Waterberg area, therefore approximate coal mine roof rating (CMRR) values were used to propose appropriate support strategies. Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS) was used to analyse the strength of the parting or interburden between the various seams, the mining sequence, and the interaction between the various seams.The research indicated that it is possible to mine seams with a low CMRR at high mining rates using longwall mining, although support for gateroads is expected to be expensive, time-consuming and onerous to install, and will impact gateroad development rates. It will not be possible to simultaneously mine zones in close proximity and failure of the interburden is predicted, thus dangerous mining conditions are anticipated. However, it will be possible to mine just two of the eleven zones using longwall mining. IntroductionThis paper discusses the difficulties associated with the potential exploitation of the deep multi-seam resources east of the Daarby fault in the Waterberg coalfield using bord and pillar and longwall mining. Figure 1 illustrates the location of the Waterberg coalfield relative to other coalfields in South Africa, while Figure 2 shows the areas containing deep and shallow resources. The Waterberg resources are expected to contribute to South Africa’s future energy requirements, and are currently exploited at the Grootegeluk open pit mine. Grootegeluk produces coal mainly for a power station, with the higher quality product supplied as metallurgical coal. The deposit is technically unique and challenging, being a multi-seam coal deposit with a total of 12 seams over a thickness of 110 m as shown in Figure 3, including Zone 5. There is currently limited knowledge on the multi-seam mining of the deep Waterberg resources. Multi-seam mining utilizing the bord and pillar method has been practised in South Africa before, but at a depth of less than 100 m in the Witbank coalfields. Multi-seam mining in thin seams has also been performed in the Natal coalfields at a depth of less than 160 m, but mostly using bord and pillar mining and secondary mining (partial pillar extraction)."

An 8,000-ft experimental field well was utilized to conduct flowing pressure gradient tests under conditions of continuous, multiphase flow through 2 3/8-in. OD tubing. The well was equipped with 10 gas-lift valves and 10 Maihak electronic pressure recorders, as well as instruments to accurately measure the surface pressure, temperature, volume of injected gas and fluid production. These tests were conducted for flow rates ranging from 75 to 936 B/D at various gas-liquid ratios from 105 to 9,433 scf/bbl. An expanding-orifice gas-lift valve allowed each flow rate to be produced with a range of controlled gas-liquid ratios. From these data an accurate pressure traverse has been constructed for various flow rates and for various gas-liquid ratios. A comparison of these tests to Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation indicates that deviations occur for certain ranges of flow rates and gas-liquid ratios. Numerous curves are presented illustrating the comparison of this correlation with the field data. Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation deviates some for low flow rates and, in particular, for gas-liquid ratios in excess of 3,000 scf/bbl. These deviations me believed to be mainly due to the friction-factor correlation. However, Poettmann and Carpenter's correlation gives excellent agreement in those ranges of higher density. This was as expected and predicted by Poettmann. He pointed out that their method was not intended to be extended to those ranges of low densities whereby an extreme reversal in curvature occurs.l As a result of these experimental tests, correlations using Poettmann and Carpenter's method were established between the friction factors and mass flow rates which are applicable for all gas-liquid ratios and flow rates. Definite changing flow patterns do not allow any one correlation to be accurate for all ranges of flow. INTRODUCTION The ability to analytically predict the pressure at any point in a flow string is essential in determining optimum production string dimensions and in the design of gas-lift installations. This information is also invaluable in predicting bottom-hole pressures in flowing wells. Although this problem is not new to industry, it has by no means been solved completely for all types of flow conditions. Versluys,2 Uren, et al, 3 Gosline,4 May,5 and Moore, et al,6,7 were all early investigators of multiphase flow through vertical conduits. However, all of these investigations and proposed methods were very limited as to their range of application. Likewise, many are extremely complicated and therefore not very useful in the field. Only in the last decade have any significant methods been proposed which are generally applicable. The most widely accepted procedure in industry at the present time is a semi-empirical method developed from an energy balance, proposed by Poettmann and Carpenter8 in 1952. Their correlation is based on actual pressure measurements from field wells. Accurate predictions from this correlation are limited to high flow rates and low gas-liquid ratios. Although this method will be discussed in detail later, it should be pointed out that two important parameters, namely the gas-liquid ratio and the viscosity, were omitted in their correlation. The viscosity was justifiably omitted since their data was in the highly turbulent flow region for both phases, and most wells fall in this category. The gas-liquid ratio was incorporated to some extent in the gas-density term. In 1954, Gilbert9 presented numerous pressure gradient curves obtained from field data for various flow rates and gas-liquid ratios for the determination of optimum flow strings. However, no method is presented for predicting pressure gradients except by comparison to these curves. Baxendell, et al,10 proposed a method based on Poettmann and Carpenter's procedure

Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

"The effects of adjusting technology on the phosphorous enrichment in converter slag were investigated. The results showed that the grain size of 2CaO·SiO2 with high phosphorus containing content increased slightly with the decreasing of cooling rate, and the proper cooling rate was confirmed to be about l.0°C.min-1. Moreover, the morphology of the phosphorus-rich phase of 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O 5 was changed from granular for the higher basicity of converter slag to the coexistence of granular shape and rod-like for the lower basicity of adjusted slag. With the addition of adjusting agent such as SiO2 to lower the basicity of converter slag, the phosphorus in converter slag could be transferred into 2CaO·Si02 phase effectively, and P2O 5 content in high phosphorus containing phase reached to above 30%.IntroductionThe yield of converter slag is very large in China, but most of the slag is stacked usually after the separation of iron, which not only takes up a lot of land, but also affects the ecological environment seriously. Therefore, improving the comprehensive utilization and value-added products of converter slag is of great significance to recycle the steelmaking slag[l-3]. On the other hand, the refining of hot metal with high phosphorous content is an unavoidable problem with the decreasing of high grade iron ore, and as a result, more amounts of high phosphorus containing steelmaking slag are produced. However, the current recycle of converter slag is more focused on the emission reduction and reuse of steelmaking slag inside the iron and steelmaking process without considering the recycle of phosphorous resources[4-6]. At the same time, the development and utilization of phosphate ore as a strategic resource is drawing more and more attention, but the phosphate ore in China is mostly low grade and significant amounts of tailings are produced which is harmful to the environment. Therefore, it is important to separate phosphorous resources in steelmaking slag which can be used as phosphate ore for fertilizer material[7-9].Literature studies showed that most of the phosphorus in steelmaking slag existing as 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O 5 solid solution phase in 2CaO·SiO2 particle. The P2O 5 content in the phosphorus containing phase is very low due to the fact that the basicity of converter slag is usually high and the precipitated amounts of 2CaO·SiO2 particles during cooling are very large, resulting in the fact that the P2O 5 contents in 2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O 5 solid solution phase are much lower which is impossible to be used as phosphorous resources instead of phosphate ore. Thus, the enrichment of phosphorus in steelmaking slag is need[ 10-14]."

UNDERSTANDING of the diffusion problem has recently been furthered by the analysis of Birchenall and Mehl.1 They pursued the problem of the variation of the diffusion coefficient with composition for non-ideal solid solutions. Their analysis follows the tradition of Wagner,2 Jost,3 Dehlinger,4 and Darken,' who assumed the net flux of dif¬fusing material to be proportional to the gradient of a quantity related to free energy. The basic assumption in Birchenall and Mehl's formulation of the problem is that the net flux of diffusing material is proportional to a thermodynamic activity gradient. To estimate the applicability of the derived relations, they corrected the diffusion coefficients of carbon in austenite by utilizing Smith's' activity data for carbon, and the diffusion coefficients for zinc in copper with activity data computed from the vapor pressure measurements of Hargreaves.7 The corrected coefficients for carbon were virtually independent of carbon concentration. For the diffusion of zinc in copper a moderate variation of diffusion coefficient with concentration remained after the correction. The problem of diffusion can be formulated in another way than that used by Birchenall and Mehl. The method is that of chemical rate theory and has been used by Eyring and his coworkers8,9 as well as by Eyring and Zwolinski10 in a discussion to Birchenall and Mehl's paper. As yet the method has not been applied to substitutional solid solutions. On the basis of their assumptions, Eyring and Zwolinski derived a relation between the diffusion coefficient and activity that is identical with that of Dehlinger and Darken but which does not correct for the variation of the diffusion coefficient with concentration as well as does the relation derived by Birchenall and Mehl. It was thought that the theory of diffusion would be more complete if the inconsistency between the two analyses could be rationalized and if diffusion in substitutional alloys were analyzed on the basis of the concepts of the chemical rate theory. CHEMICAL RATE THEORY According to the theory of absolute reaction rates8 the reaction [A,+A2+ ... +.A;->X,+X2 +...+X; EqI] is viewed as taking place in two steps. First the reactants A1, A2, . . . A[i] combine to form an activated complex M with which they are in equilibrium; [A, + A2 + .. . + Ai = M. Eq 2] Second the activated complex decomposes to give the products X1, X2. . .. X[j]; [M->X1+X2+ ... +.X;. Eq3] It has been shown8 that the number of activated complexes decomposing per unit volume per unit time is given by the expression† [kT]

The closure of TSF represents a critical milestone in the life cycle of mining operations, requiring the integration of technical, environmental, and social dimensions to ensure long-term safety and sustainability. The GISTM introduces the concept of “safe closure” as a demonstrable technical condition in which there are no ongoing material risks to people or the environment. This status must be validated by an independent technical reviewer and formally approved by the Accountable Executive. This article presents a risk-based methodology to support the achievement of safe closure, aligned with the principles and requirements of the GISTM. The proposed approach emphasizes the need to identify, assess, and manage closure and post-closure risks progressively throughout all phases of the TSF life cycle: from site selection and design, through construction and operation, to closure implementation and long-term monitoring. The methodology integrates key elements of effective risk management, including comprehensive knowledge bases, consideration of climate change, credible failure modes, continuous monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and governance. The ALARP principle is applied to demonstrate that residual risks have been reduced to tolerable levels. By incorporating closure planning from the earliest stages and adopting a risk-based view throughout the entire life cycle, this methodology aims to support mining organizations in achieving a verifiable and responsible closure of tailings facilities, in line with international best practices such as those of ANCOLD and ICOLD. The proposed framework offers a practical contribution to strengthening the credibility, effectiveness, and sustainability of tailings closure processes.

Beryllium occurs in the Honeycomb Hills area in volcanic tuff similar to the more extensive berylliferous tuff occurring 20 miles east at Spor Mountain , Juab County , Utah . Samples from the two areas have been mineralogically examined to ascertain whether they have similar characteristics . The Honeycomb Hills samples showed the presence of beta- Be ( OH ) 2 , as well as an amorphous berylliferous substance , whereas in the Spor Mountain tuff the beryllium- bearing minerals are hydrated bertrandite and berylliferous saponite .

Ground engaging tools are used to prevent damage to the main components of earth-moving equipment. These tools consist of everything from shovel teeth to replaceable drill bits to dozer wear plates. The costs of these ?consumable? items are increasing with the costs of raw materials. This project developed a tool to be used by Newmont Mining Corporation to predict the consumption of excavator teeth. This paper presents the results of a Montana Tech research project in which an equation was developed to predict excavator teeth consumption based on production rates and rock properties.

Charged sprays and fog have been evaluated for reducing respirable dust concen¬trations. Charged spray technology was reviewed for effectiveness, equipment and theoretical considerations. A mathematical model was developed for predicting dust reduction effects. Laboratory tests were made showing charged spray is considerably more effective at reducing dust on a unit water basis than hydraulic spray. Positive and negative sprays are equally effective. Combined polarity sprays are considerably less effective than either polarity alone. Little difference in effectiveness by dust type was observed. The charged cloud can present a spark hazard in explosive atmospheres. Due to this spark hazard from the charged droplet cloud this technique must not be used in gassy mines. Predictions were made for field test conditions but confirmation was impossible due to particles resulting from dissolved solides in the spray water. Dissolved or suspended solids in atomizing sprays can result in an increase of the respirable dust burden. Charged sprays are an available dust control technique best suited to applications where water usage must be limited and long contact time between spray and dust is possible.
