Water recovery in mineral processing plants is one of the most important subjects because water supply is a critical matter economically and environmentally, especially in desert areas. In this paper, the filtration behaviour of two iron ore tailing sample has been investigated using laboratory scale vacuum and pressure filtration units. These samples including tailing from Sirjan and Zarand concentrate production plants with the d80 of 94 and 41 micron, respectively. The results show that by using vacuum filtration the cake moisture content of Sirjan sample would be about 24%. But the filtration time is too long and vacuum belt filter cannot be used in industrial scale. Adding about 40 g/ton of flocculant would decrease the filtration time by about 30% and make the vacuum belt filter appropriate for dewatering of this sample. For Zarand tailing sample, the vacuum filtration would produce a wet cake by about 31% moisture content. Filtration time is too long and adding flocculant would not improve the results very much. So pressure filtration must be used for dewatering of this sample. The results of laboratory tests show that using pressure filter would reduce the cake moisture content to 21%. The filtration time is logical, so this process can be used for Zarand tailing dewatering.

LIME is a very general term applied to products of limestone, in popular treatises often incorrectly, including ground or pulverized limestone used in agriculture. When used without qualifying adjective, the term usually means burned or calcined limestone, or quicklime, or calcia. The corresponding calcined product of magnesite is magnesia. If the calcined rock is relatively pure calcium carbonate, the resulting lime is a "high-calcium" lime; if the rock is dolomite, or a combination of calcium and magnesium carbonates, the lime is a "dolomitic" or a "high- magnesium" lime. There are various grades in between, depending on the percentage of magnesium carbonate and other ingredients in the raw rock. For some industrial purposes only high-calcium limes are suitable; in other processing-as, for example, neutralizing acid wastes -the relative percentages of magnesium and calcium carbonates in the raw material are not important. Limestone is burned (roasted or calcined) in furnaces known as lime kilns by direct exposure to the hot gases and flames. When heated to incandescence, the carbon dioxide content of the rock is expelled, leaving calcium and magnesium oxides, according to the formula usually written: [ ] This thermal reaction is reversible, which requires that the lime be withdrawn from the "calcining zone" of the kiln about as fast as made. Pure calcium carbonate would lose 44 pct of its weight in the calcining process; dolomite, 48 pct. Generally, the lime will retain the approximate size and shape of the piece of rock from which it is made but some few limestones tend to break down into granules or dust. Hence lime (quicklime) comes from the kilns in lumps or granules and normally is packed in water- tight containers in these forms, or is pulverized after calcination.

Introduction In an earlier publication, the application of exoelectron technology to the monitoring of dry grinding in a ball mill was reported. Recently, the author has investigated the ball mill problem in more detail with the system shown in Fig.1 . Here, some of the current generated in the ore-ball-water mixture was picked up by the metal chains and served as a measure of the rate of grinding. While the mechanism of current generation has not been completely clarified, a parallel study of electrical effects associated with rock drilling indicated that the major driving force is the zeta potential*, while oxidation of the freshly fractured material provides the remainder of the current. Both of these effects are sensitive to the exposed surface area, and it might be expected that the observed currents would provide a measure of the grinding rate. This "surface area" effect allows the measurement system to be used in any type of rock or ore grinding. Some studies with sulfide copper ore indicate higher currents than those observed with silica sand, but the overall pattern of current versus grinding rate is essentially the same. Experimental Studies The experimental system was set up as shown in Fig. 1. The initial studies were done with silica sand because of its availability and for comparison with the data of reference 1. The sand was sized to an average of 425 µm (40 mesh); a typical charge consisted of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of sand, 0.85 L (0.22 gal) of tap water and 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) of iron grinding balls 25.5 mm (1 in.) in diameter. For a typical "run," the mill was loaded with a fresh charge of ore and operated for periods ranging from 10-60 min. During this time, the current was measured with a Keithley 417 picoammeter and a chart recorder. At the end of the grinding period, the charge was removed and sieved to recover the 425, 300, and 212 pm (40, 50, and 70 mesh) fractions which were then drained and weighed. A fresh charge was used for each test and every attempt was made to keep the draining and weighing processes uniform. *The zeta potential is the voltage developed between the surface of a solid particle and the ion solution in which it is immersed. In the case of rock/ore materials in water, the zeta potential is negative.

TWIP (Twinning-Induced Plasticity) steels have exceptionally good combinations of strength, ductility and damage tolerance which satisfy the recent requirements of automotive industries. Firstly, TWIP has the most beneficial effect on the work-hardening. It is believed that deformation twins increase the work-hardening rate by acting as obstacles against gliding dislocations. Moreover, TWIP steels have low to intermediate stacking fault energy and hence undergo extensive mechanical twinning during deformation, which in turn leads a good combination of both strength and ductility. To explain the mechanical characteristics and the mechanical behavior of the TWIP steels, we have been made some investigations and experiments that show the effects of microalloying elements and deformation mechanisms. In this study, three different compositions of TWIP steels have been produced. The microstructure and mechanical properties are characterized by using optical, electron microscopy and mechanical tests.

Aclivilies of magnesium in liquid Alg-Si alloys have been delermined between 5 and 60 at. pcl Si, close to the melling point of Mg2Si, by an improved isopieslic melhod. Silicon specinrens, held in alumina crucibles and graplrile conlainevs of special design, were healed in a letrlpevalure gvadient and equilibrated with mag-nesilcrrl rapor in a closed lilanium system. The ther-madynamic Junctions were calculated and compared with the thermodyuamic properties of the other three mg- Gvoup IVB systems. Lattice paramelers of three Mg2X compounds were measured. The bonding in the Mg2X compounds is largely covalent with small and uarying amounts of metallic and ionic conlvibutions. The Mg-Si phase diagram1 has one congruent melting compound, Mg2Si, of essentially stoichiometric composition, two eutectics, and very limited terminal solid solubilities. Little information is available on the thermodynamic properties of this system. The free energy of formation of Mg2Si has been determined by the Knudsen cell technique2 in the range 572" to 680oC, by the transportation method3 between 858" and 950oC, and by the electromotive-force method4 in the range 400o to 600°C. Kubaschewski and villa5 and caulfield6 have measured the heat of formation of Mg2Si. An electromotive-force study of magnesium-rich liquid alloys was recently published by Sryvalin el al.7 The present investigation was undertaken to complete a general survey of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of Mg-Group IVB systems, i.e., Mg-Pb,a9,Mg-Sn,10,11 mg-Ge,12and Mg-Si. An isopiestic technique, previously developed for similar measurements on liquid Mg-sn11 and Mg-Ge alloys,12 was modified for the Mg-Si system. Specimens of the nonvolatile component, silicon, were contained in dense alumina crucibles placed inside covered graphite crucibles which were heated in a temperature gradient in an evacuated and sealed titanium reaction tube and equilibrated with magnesium vapor of known vapor pressure. The alumina crucibles prevented contact between the highly corrosive liquid Mg-Si alloys and graphite. The graphite cruci- bles effectively preserved the high-temperature equilibrium composition of the liquid alloys containing highly volatile magnesium on termination of the experiments during the quench to room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Silicon of semiconductor-grade purity (E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., Brevard, N.C.) and 99.99+ pct Mg (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) were used. Graphite crucibles with press-fitted lids were machined from high-density (1.92 g per cu cm) rods (Basic Carbon Corp., Sanborn, N.Y.) which had a maximum ash content of less than 0.04 pct. The alumina crucibles had a purity of 99.7+ pct (Triangle RR grade, Morganite, Inc., Long Island City, N.Y.). In preliminary runs the liquid alloys were contained in graphite crucibles following the exact procedure developed for the Mg-Ge system.'2 These runs failed due to appreciable reaction between the molten Mg-Si alloys and graphite, and the results have been discarded. The procedure was then modified and the Mg-Si alloys were subsequently held in alumina crucibles. For most of the runs alumina crucibles of known weight and approximately 6.3 mm ID, 12.5 mm height, 1.0 mm wall thickness were loaded with weighed amounts of silicon and encapsuled in tightly covered weighed graphite crucibles 5/16 in. ID, 2 in. helght, 3/32 in. wall thickness). The graphite crucibles were machined from rods which were 85 pct of the theoretical density. These crucibles were therefore sufficiently porous so as to permit magnesium vapor to effuse through the silicon under the experimental conditions of approximately 970O to 1220°C and 1 day equilibration time. However, negligible magnesium was lost from the crucible during the quench due to the slow effusion rate through the pores of the graphite. The inner alumina crucible prevented the liquid alloys from contacting the graphite, and the very tightly fitting graphite crucible lids served to retain any magnesium vaporizing from the alloys inside the crucibles during the quenching step.12 The loaded silicon-alumina-graphite cells were positioned, one above another, on a 16-in.-long titanium thermocouple well and tied securely to the titanium tube with thin molybdenum wires held in grooves around the circumference of the graphite crucibles. A thin (0.005-in.) molybdenum strip prevented contact between the graphite crucibles and the titanium. This assembly was lowered into a titanium reaction tube (la in. ID, 16 in. long, $ in. wall thickness) closed on one end which contained a 11/2-in.-long cylinder of magnesium at the bottom. The inner titanium thermocouple well was positioned eccentrically in the large tube because of the eccentric mounting of the cells on the well. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) can be a magnificent tunneling device under optimal rock conditions. Such ideal conditions would include good Rock Material Characteristics (compact, uniform; low to medium strength, hardness, and abrasiveness); good Rock Mass Characteristics (few joints and shears; unweathered); and good Geologic Environmental Characteristics (above groundwater level and moderate in-situ stress). Such idealized rock conditions would eliminate support problems, fallout at face and grippers, frequent cutter changes, and water problems. Daily advance rates of 50 m would be commonplace. Unfortunately, nature seldom provides the ideal geologic characteristics. The challenge to the geologist, machine manufacturer, and contractor is to provide equipment and procedures to best handle the adverse geologic features, once identified.

Greenbank Terotech is a member of the Halley & Mellowes Group of Companies and is accredited t AS3902. Greenbank has been involved within the wear resistant lining industry for over 20 years. Initially supplying cast Basalt piping systems through to the present day breakthroughs with SiTech cyclone linings. The challenge of finding the most cost effective cyclone lining has been a difficult process. Over the years many varieties of ceramics have come and gone. In particular within cyclone applications, many people have become disillusioned with the term "Ceramic." In practice, it was discovered that if a ceramic worked in one part of the plant, it did not necessarily work in the cyclone area. A good example of this is Alumina chute and pipe linings. An Alumina lined cyclone underflow bend would provide exceptional wear resistance, whereas an Alumina Spigot would have failed miserably. After Alumina's were tried, Silicon Carbides were experi­mented with. The results in many trials were mixed. What worked at one mine did not work at another. The results did not conclude decisively that ceramics were here to stay within the hard rock cyclone area. It was then that Greenbank Terotech started to look at the reason "Why do some linings work and others don't." We came to the conclusion that the matrix holding the particles together had to be the key to a successful cyclone material. At the time we looked at materials such as Alumina Bonded Silicon Carbides, Metallic (Aluminium) Bonded Silicon Carbide, 99% Alumina Ceramics and Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbides, but all these materials either suffered from chemical attack on the Aluminium matrix (via cyanide) or the matrix simply was not hard enough causing wear rates to be excessive. It was then we looked at SiTech. SiTech is a unique material in that the primary particles are Silicon Carbide, but the matrix is made up of a Secondary Silicon Carbide formed within the reaction bonding process.

A commercial deposit of white kaolinite clay contained in the sandy overburden of the Cambrian Gatesburg formation in Central Pennsylvania was successfully mapped by combined SP and resistivity methods and results were checked by drilling. Resistivity minima in the range between roughly 2000 and 3500 ohm-meters coupled with second-order SP maxima of 50-60 mV contrast were found to characterize commercial white kaolinite clay beneath not more than 30-40 ft. of sandy overburden in the area stdied. This investigation supports the hypothesis, established previously, that certain SP phenomena may reasonably be ascribed to diffusion and membrane potentials produced by interaction of clay lenses, sandy matrix, and ground waters. The success of this test proves that this prospecting technique can assist in locating clay deposits in sandy overburden derived from the weathering of sandstones and carbonate rocks such as the Cambrian formations of Central Pennsylvania. In a recent paper, Gross and Moore (1959) described broad self-potential minima above the outcrops of the Cambrian Gatesburg formation. These "first-order" SP anomalies, of 220-350 mV contrast (Figure 7), are related to the peculiar sandy residual soil covering the Gatesburg formation. Small positive ("second-order") peaks of 50-60 mV contrast are superposed on the bottom or flanks of the first-order troughs. They appear to be related to lenses and layers of kaolinite clays within the sandy Gatesburg overburden. Both first-order and second-order anomalies show a characteristic inverse relationship with apparent resistivity profiles in most cases. An explanation in terns of liquid-junction and shale potentials was advanced. According to this working hypothesis, shale potentials are generated: 1) at the contact of the sandy Gatesburg overburden with the more argillaceous soils of surrounding formations; 2) at the boundary of clay lenses contained in the sandy matrix of that overburden. Concentration gradients between interstitial infiltration waters and perched water tables within the Gatesburg overburden are believed to give rise to the liquid-junction potentials. In order to test this hypothesis further, a detailed study was carried out of a second-order positive anomaly on the property of the Woodbury Clay Co. at Mines (Blair County, Pa., Hollidaysburg folio of the U.S. Geological Survey). A second aim was to establish if combined SP and resistivity surveys are suitable as a practical method for delimiting favorable areas in which commercial kaolinite clay de~osits may be found by drilling. Drilling control was provided by the Woodbury Clay Co. PROCEDURES Instrumentation used for SP measurements was the same as described in the paper mentioned. For resistivity surveys, a direct-current voltmeter-ammeter device built by Georator Gorp. of Manassas (Va.) was used in combination with non-polarizing electrodes from the same manufacturer. Power was supplied by one to six 45-volt, heavy-duty B-batteries

"Reduction swellability index (Rsn and low temperature reduction disintegration index (RDI) of vanadium-titanium magnetite oxidized pellets are harmful to the processing of ironmaking, for example, causing serious gas permeability, decreased yield, higher coke ratio and more furnace dust. Thus, the improvements of RSI and RDI of vanadium-titanium magnetite oxidized pellets were investigated in this paper, including the pretreatment of raw material, additives of dolomite or boric acid, pellets treated in chloride solution and so on. The results showed that damp milling as pretreatment and boric acid added in pelletizing were conducive to the RSI which decreased 5% and 7% respectively, while they were not efficient enough in improving RDI. Dolomite was efficient in improving RSI, but had negative effect on RDI. There was no evidence to show that RSI and RDI would be improved when pellets were treated in chloride solution. Pursuing this further, the mechanism of those improvements were investigated.IntroductionIn the world, vanadium-titanium magnetite utilization is investigated around how to recover iron, titanium, vanadium, and divided into blast-furnace method and non-blast-furnace method according to respective characteristics. Blast furnace method [1, 2] can recover iron and vanadium effectively, but Ti02 cannot be recycled. Non-blast-furnace methods include rotary kiln-electric furnace method, pre-reduction electric furnace method, reduction- grinding method and sodium vanadium-rotary kiln-electric furnace method and so on. [3-7]Comparing to the Non-blast-furnace method, the method of blast furnace smelting has been put into industrial applications. And it has the following advantages: First of all, effective recycling iron and vanadium; Second, technical problems of high titanium slag in blast furnace smelting; Third, it has mature technology in blast furnace smelting."

Chemical squeeze treatments have been used to provide temporary relief from certain production problems. The chemical fracture-squeeze technique, combining the effects of a fracturing treatment and a squeeze operation, has been more successful than conventional squeeze operations. Knowledge derived from well stimulation and reservoir engineering research provides a means for predicting the theoretical effective life of such a treatment. Analysis of theoretical equations and concepts developed allows selection of improved treatment techniques based on specific formation conditioins. Theory used in this analysis was developed as an extension of previous electrical model studies made to establish the expected flow and pressure profiles adjacent to a fracture system. The chemical fracture squeeze technique can be utilized in the economic application of corrosion inhibitors, emulsion breakers and paraffin and scale inhibitors. Application of this technique is shown to be effective. The slow return rate of injected chemicals, controlled by the resultant flow profiles and treatment variables, permits extended periods of chemical effectiveness. Results of field treatments are given, showing that the concepts outlined above for chemical fracture-squeeze treatments are valid and that applying this technique can help alleviate many current production problems. INTRODUCTION Much progress has been made in the last 10 to 15 years in developing chemicals for use in stimulating wells, maintaining production and protecting well equipment from damage due to corrosion. Not too many years ago, some wells seemed to dry up or wear out. In many cases the wells were produced as long as possible without any attempt at maintaining productivity. Even with the advent of new and better stimulation techniques, a rapid decline in production was observed. Methods of removing and, in some instances, preventing damage have been developed. Among thosc factors responsible for uneconomical production are scale, paraffin, corrosion, bacteria, water blocks and emulsions. Soluble scale-prevention chemicals have been developed1,2 that can be placed in a formation along with frac- turing sand. As the water produces back across this bed, the solid material dissolves slowly and can provide long-term protection from scale. However, bottom-hole temperature and salinity of produced water vary widely and both these factors influence the rate of solubility. Scale inhibitor composition is also a controlling factor. Some of the solid material may be crushed, increasing the surface area exposed to water and increasing the rate at which it dissolves. Some of the material may never be contacted by water and can be lost. However, this type of treatment has been very successful in many instances and has helped maintain economical production for extended periods of time. Liquid scale inhibitors, which are more widely applicable and more stable, have been developed in recent years; however, because they are liquids, their use has been restricted to treatment down the annulus, using metering pumps to provide proper concentrations in the produced fluid. This has prevented use in wells containing packers, in dually completed wells and in gas-lift and flowing wells. Wells that operate with an open annulus may also experience severe corrosion problems due to introduction of oxygen. Paraffin inhibitors3 have been developed that can be fractured into a well as particulate solids to be slowly dissolved in the produced fluid. These materials are not usually effective in wells with a bottom-hole temperature in excess of 120F since solubility rate may be too fast if that temperature is exceeded or if aromatic content of the oils is unusually high. Corrosion inhibitors have been developed that can be fractured' into a well for long-term feedback, but development of a material with proper solubility or feed rate has been difficult. Corrosion inhibitors are available in many different forms. Liquids have been lubricated down the annulus or sticks or pellets dropped down tubing. Inhibitor squeeze treatments5 devcloped a few years ago led to development of inhibitors with particularly strong film-forming properties.6,7 This technique basically involves displacing a highly concentrated solution of the inhibitor into the formation through the tubing. Kerver and Hanson8 studied the adsorption properties of inhibitors on various types of formations. They showed that, even though the inhibitor was displaced radially into the true permeability, it could be produced back for a long period of time because of slow desorption from the rock. Methods developed for monitoring the return of these inhibitors generally have established 1 to 6 months as the effective limit before retreatment is necessary.9 Inhibitors displaced into the interstices of the formation sometimes cause emulsions that either hamper production or cause treating problems on the surface.

In casting a thermal balance of the heat generated and absorbed in a blast-furnace treating lead-, copper- and similar non-ferrous ores, assumptions have always to be made for the values of the heat of formation of slag. Considering that the larger part of the charge introduced into the furnace comes out in the form of slag, the significance becomes apparent of a lack of heat-values for the singulo-silicate, which is the type of slag commonly made. The aim of the present investigation is to supply these heat-values as far as possible with the apparatus and the time available. The heats of formation of the ferrous and manganous bi-silicates have been determined by Le Chatelier;1 those of some silicates other than iron and manganese by Tschernobaeff;' finally Richards3 gives a figure for a copper blast-furnace slag of known composition. The existing data and those resulting from the present investigation are assembled in Table VI. 11. Materials Used. The materials used in the experiments mere silica, ferrous oxide, and calcium carbonate. Silica.—The silica sold in the market as chemically pure usually contains small amounts of magnesia, lime, and alumina, and is therefore not suited for the work. Os aços galvanizados são amplamente utilizados devido à sua excelente resistência à corrosão. Além disso, esses aços apresentam alta qualidade superficial, o que é um requisito importante para aplicações exigentes como as da indústria automobilística. Dentre os parâmetros de processo importantes para a qualidade dos revestimentos está o teor de alumínio no banho de zinco. Nesse estudo, foi utilizado o simulador do processo de galvanização a quente (HDPS), para investigar a influência do teor de alumínio efetivo do banho na qualidade superficial do revestimento galvannealed (GA), sendo avaliados os teores de 0,09% e 0,14%. Para acompanhar os estágios de formação das fases Fe-Zn foram realizadas interrupções do ciclo de galvanização ao longo das etapas de imersão no banho e de tratamento térmico de galvannealing. Utilizando a técnica GDOES, foi possível acompanhar as variações da concentração de alumínio ao longo do revestimento durante a formação das fases Fe-Zn. Os resultados das simulações mostraram que o alumínio efetivo mais baixo no banho favoreceu a cinética de formação das fases Fe-Zn durante o tratamento térmico e diminuiu a ocorrência de regiões com aspecto brilhante no revestimento, melhorando a qualidade superficial.

The Lead Smelting works of Metallurgie Hoboken S.A. are located on the banks of the river Scheldt a few miles South of Antwerp. Lead refining began at Hoboken in 1687, when it was restricted mainly to desilverizing lead bullion from Central America. Since then, various changes have been made to develop the works into a comprehensive and integrated custom smelter and refinery. Multiple hearth roasting furnaces, down-draft sinter machines and blast furnaces of standard design are used for the treatment of "complex" lead ores and secondary materials. A lead refinery based on the Harris process, with Parkes desilverizing followed by vacuum dezincing and Kroll Betterton debismuthizing was commissioned in 1967. Facilities for the recovery of precious metals, bismuth, antimony, arsenic and sulfuric acid are available. Special problems arise from the presence of large quantities of copper in the materials treated.

"Hot compression test of Nb microalloyed coiled tubing steel is performed on Gleeble3500 at 1123K—1373K and strain rate from 0.001 to 5s-1. It is found that flow softening occurs and the flow curves exhibit a peak with a characteristic of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and change with temperature and strain rate significantly. The peak stress and peak strain are dependent on the Zener-Hollomon relationship with activation energy of 390 KJ/mol. On the basis of Avrami equation and the Zener-Hollomon parameter, it is obtained that the dynamic recrystallization kinetics equation with which the calculated and measured recrystallization fraction is very close. On the results of hot compression test, the Nb microalloyed coiled tubing steel is rolled by Thermo-Mechanical-Control-Processing (TMCP), and it is obtained that the yield strength and tensile strength of Nb microalloyed coiled tubing steel are 565MPa and 685MPa respectively, and the elongation percentage is 30.1%.IntroductionCoiled tubing is widely used in oil field for well logging, well completion, drilling, work over and other operation in various fields to solve a number of conventional operating techniques problem which are difficult resolved, and it plays a more and more important part in exploration and production at oil field. [1] It will improve the efficiency of exploration and exploitation, studying, developing and using coiled tubing technology. Therefore, the development of domestic coiled tubing materials and manufacturing technology are great significance. It is well known that Coiled tubing has relatively poor working conditions and complex force state. So, the coiled tubing needs satisfier a kind of high strength, high plasticity, and corrosion resistant under complex oil gas condition. As the coiled tubing technology developed, the level of the coiled tubing steel is from CT55 originally to CT90 and CT100, and the corresponding tensile strength is 483MPa-758MPa. [2, 3]"

IN response to many urgent requests for a concrete realization of a series of standard temperatures that would be available to any one anywhere for the standardization of pyrometers and the reproduction of the standard scale of temperature for use in laboratories and industrial works, the Bureau, in 1916, made arrangements with several manufacturers to prepare a series of- pure metals that could best serve this purpose. After the necessary preliminary work of chemical analysis, as a check on the purity, together with exact determinations of melting or freezing points, the Bureau began, in 1917, the issuing of melting -point standards of tin, zinc, aluminum, and copper. At the outset, it was decided to secure metals of the highest purity and of American manufacture, and this was accomplished in a more satisfactory manner than anticipated. In the preparation of these temperature standards, the Bureau has had the hearty cooperation of several American companies, which have succeeded in producing metals highly satisfactory for the purpose and of as high a state of purity as could have been obtained anywhere. Each company that undertook the responsibility of furnishing a metal for this series of standards exercised most painstaking care to produce the best possible product as to purity and uniformity. A representative of the Bureau witnessed the actual preparation of each metal. The 300 and 400-lb. (136 and 181-kg.) samples making up the first series were all used up, with the exception of the aluminum, early in 1919. The Bureau has taken steps to replenish its stocks of metals serving as pyrometric standards and to the list has been added lead. The copper and lead are being ordered this time in 1-ton lots and the zinc and tin in 300-lb. (136 kg.) lots as before. The wide dissemination of these samples will be appreciated when it is noted that the metals are distributed by the Bureau inn quantities of 50 cu. cm. each, at $2 a sample and accompanied by a certificate which gives the melting point as determined by samples from the same lot. The manufacture and detailed description of chemical analyses, physical measurements, and precautions in use of these pyrometric standards, are described in detail in the Bureau Circulcar No., 66.

The structures and transformation temperatures of high-purity Fe-Cr alloys have been investigated as functions of composition (0 to 10 wt pct Cr) and rate of quenching from the high-temperature Y phase field (up to 40,000°C sec-1). The structures were chmacterized by transmission electron microscopy. The transformation temperatures for each alloy exhibited the progressive decrease to a constant value with increasing cooling rate which has been shown to be characteristic of several iron binary systems. The corresponding structures were found to become increasingly finer in scale with increasing cooling rate and solute content, but to remain essentially equiaxed in character. In all the materials except the high-purity iron and one of the alloys, an additional and lower transformation temperature than the constant value for the equiaxed structures was observed. The structures of specimens which transformed at these lower temperatures (only single thermal wrests were observed in any given run) were martensitic and consisted of arrays of fine ferrite laths which varied in size and morphology with changing solute content. The factors controlling the nature of these transformations are discussed. The composition dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, ME, in Fe-Cr alloys together with those reported for other iron binary systems indicate that MB for pure iron is some 700°c, rather than the values of 550° and 760°C reported previously. This conclusion is further supported by the results of a compmison of the thermodynamics of mmtensite formation in several systems. ThE extensive investigations of the structures formed on athermal transformation in iron and its alloys have led to the characterization of several forms of martensitic or "military"1,2 transformations and, in addition, a "civilian7' transformation to ferrite or "equiaxed a"* which occurs athermally and at a very high rate.374
