The Gulf Coast of southern Louisiana during the year of 1940 was subjected to an extensive exploration and development campaign, as a result of which 16 oil fields and about 38 new producing sands were found. Although this record of discovery appears in keeping with the rate of 1939 actually in amount of new proven reserves, it may fall short of that of the previous year. Only five or six of the discoveries rated as first-class or important fields at the close of the year. The most prominent new fields opened during the year were Neale field in Beaure-gard Parish, the West Cote Blanche field in St. Mary Parish, the Stella field and the West Bay field in Plaquemines Parish, and the Lake Salvador field in St. Charles Parish. There were many important oil-sand discoveries in proven fields, such as in the Bayou Perot field, the Golden Meadows field, the Iowa field, West Lake Verrett field, and the Venice field. During the year, 1047 weUs were drilled in southern Louisiana, of which 768 were completed as oil-producing wells, 17 as gas wells and 262 as dry holes. The Neale field in northwest Beauregard Parish is considered one of the most important discoveries of the year. The f~eld centers around the north half of sec. 26, 'Y.3 S., R.I I W., just north of the town of Neale. It was discovered by the Atlantic Refining Co., using reflection seismograph to locate the structure. Production was found in the second well drilled in the Wilcox sand on the downthrown side of a fault. The structure is known as the "Tepetate" type, being similar to that of the well-known Tepetate field. There were 12 oil wells and 3 dry holes drilled during the year. The Wilcox sand in this field occurs between 8350 and 8400 ft. and averages 30 ft. in thickness. The West Cote Blanche Bay field, in West Cote Blanche Bay, St. Mary Parish, is a 1940 discovery by the Texas Company, credited to reflection seismograph exploration. The oil is from two sands occurring at 3110 to 3140 ft. and from 4950 to 5020 it. Four wells were drilled during the year, three oil wells and one dry hole. The deepest hole drilled reached 9491 ft. without encountering salt or dome material. In Plaquemines Parish, south of New Orleans, the California company has a new field known as the Stella field. The sand was found at a depth of 7485 ft., and 5 ft. of perforations made a well capable of producing 486 bbl. of oil in 24 hr. through a 9.is-in. choke. The oil is 42" gravity. The discovery well was drilled to a total depth of 10,258 ft. and other producing sands were indicated. A good field appears assured, although only one well was completed within the year. The Lake Salvador field, in the center of Lake Salvador, St. Charles Parish, gives promise of being one of the most important discoveries of the year. The discovery well was perforated at 9775 to 9800 ft. making 850 bbl. of 33.7° gravity oil daily through a 1/4-in. choke. ALTHOUGH data on the exact tonnage of recoverable coal silt are not known, the quantity produced in 1943 was estimated to be over five million tons for the anthracite region of Pennsylvania alone. Since that time the recovery of the No. 5 buck- wheat size previously included in silt estimates has increased greatly thus reducing the total silt tonnage. As a compensating factor, however, the methods of recovering silt previously escaping into the rivers and streams have been markedly improved so that the net figure may not have changed materially. Comparable estimates for bituminous coal are lacking, but undoubtedly the silt represents a significant tonnage. With the trend toward increased wet cleaning of the smaller sizes of bituminous coal, it is to be expected that even greater quantities of silt will be available in the future. The raw silt from anthracite collieries usually contains a high mineral matter content, but technological developments in fine coal cleaning have been making rapid advances and it appears probable that more extensive use of these methods will be employed in the near future. Bituminous coal silt in many instances contains a similar high mineral matter content. As with anthracite silt, however, the cleaning of this material, where necessary, appears both technologically and economically feasible. With a view to upgrading the size and value of silt, considerable laboratory and pilot plant work has been conducted by a number of organizations on what is commonly known as pelletization. Actually the process is one of extrusion in which the moist silt is extruded from a die in the form of rods, which usually break into relatively short lengths-a few inches long-as they fall from the die. Fig I is a photograph of some extruded 3/8-in. diam pellets and of the anthracite silt from which they were produced. This technique of producing larger sized material from fines is by no means new, having been used extensively by the industrial carbon and clay industries for years.' The application of the process to coal silt appears, however, to be relatively new. The first major program of investigation dates back only to July 1945, when a group of engineers representing the Anthracite Institute, The Pennsylvania State College and the J. F. Pritchard and Co. conducted preliminary tests on the extrusion of anthracite silt at the Floridin Co. plant at Warren, Pa. Since that time these three organizations-individually, together, and in co- operation with other interested groups- have actively pursued work on various phases of the problem. Much of the early history and details of the laboratory and pilot plant work by the Anthracite Institute, has been reported by Mulcey and Eckerd.2 It is the purpose of this paper to report additional information on the process, especially with respect to the factors influencing the quality and use properties of the product, and the current develop

DESPITE strikes, domestic production of copper and zinc in 1951 rose about 3 pct and 10 pct, respectively. Lead output fell only about 7 pct. Primary refined, including processed scrap and imported concentrates, was somewhat higher for zinc, and slightly lower for copper and lead. Prospects are for moderately larger mine and refined production in 1952 according to Standard & Poor's analysis of nonferrous metals. The survey goes on to report domestic copper prices averaged 14 pct higher in 1951, lead prices 30 pct higher, and zinc prices 32 pct higher. The 2¢ rise in zinc and lead ceilings in October will lift the average price in 1952 over 8 pet, assuming no further price change. Currently, OPS appears opposed to raising the 24 ½ ¢ copper ceiling to the 24 ½ ¢ maximum on imported metal. The steep premiums in world markets are likely to be reduced in 1952. Sales in 1951 were at new peaks. A further moderate rise is indicated for 1952. Earnings of the industry were at a new high in 1951. The increase for companies covered in the survey was perhaps 25 pet, despite a tax rate of about 53 pet, against about 40 pct. in 1950. Relatively maintained to moderately higher earnings are currently indicated for 1952. About two thirds of the companies covered in the survey raised dividends, including extras, in 1951. In general, maintained payments appear probable in 1952.

Miners really are an optimistic bunch. Even with the dark clouds hanging over the global industry, mining professionals still turn out in droves at industry conferences. In February, more than 7,200 professionals attended SME?s Annual Meeting in Denver, CO, a record. And the following week, more than 30,000 people converged on Toronto, ON, Canada for the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) meeting. For many small and junior mining and exploration companies the PDAC conference is a place to find potential investors in their projects. The Investors Exchange attracts several hundred companies, each showing off their properties to the many money types who wander the hall during the four-day conference.

INRTODUCTION Annual coal production rose to over 1.03 billion st (931 Mt) in 1990. At the same time the number of mines producing this increased tonnage has decreased over 60% in a 30-year period, from 9230 mines in 1960.1 The great increase in production made possible through continued mechanization requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get coal away from the mine. Also the trend to combine production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant continues. A recent census of US coal preparation plants indicated that 310 plants were in operation.2 In addition to increased loading capacity, storage and blending facilities are more necessary both at the producer and user end. In this climate of rapidly changing technology, any written account is faced with the possibility of obsolescence before its appearance. Thus, this chapter seeks to define the common and current practice in coal loading and storage facilities with the full knowledge that this practice is an ever-moving target. FUNDAMENTALS OF COAL STORAGE Storage of coal is becoming an increasingly important part of coal handling systems at mines, particularly since the advent of the unit-train concept in transportation. In order to take advantage of reduced transportation rates on trainload shipments of coal offered by unit-train movement, operators have found that storage is an economic necessity. In unit-train practice, large predetermined quantities must be loaded in relatively short periods of time, as opposed to conventional practice where coal is loaded at a speed dependent on the production capacity of the mine and/or the cleaning capacity of the preparation plant. Clean coal storage is generally practiced in order to accomplish one, or a combination, of the following objectives: 1. To load out promptly and economically. 2. To facilitate blending in order to even out chemical and physical inconsistencies and to prepare desired products or to attain maximum product uniformity. 3. To store certain sizes whose prices and market demand fluctuate with seasons and to permit shipping in good weather. Coal storage, then, is necessary and desirable, both from production and utilization standpoints. There are, however, several undesirable aspects attendant to the storage of coal, the most important of which are oxidation and spontaneous combustion, changes in properties which may affect utilization of the coal, degradation of coal due to rehandling, and the added cost of handling and storage facilities.

"This paper reviews tailings management at Highland Valley Copper, and outlines main features of its tailings storage facility enclosed between the H-H and L-L dams. Key management focusses are: energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, safety and integrity of the tailings impoundment, environmental protection, and reclamation after decommissioning. Main features of the tailings facility include: high international standards for seismic and flood design criteria, water management and water quality monitoring, operations and construction optimization, reclamation and decommissioning plan, and geotechnical challenges associated with the complex geology of the L-L tailings dam foundation.IntroductionHighland Valley Copper stores its tailings mainly in the Highland Valley tailings facility (ultimate capacity: 1.8 billion tonnes). Smaller tailings storage facilities were operated by predecessor companies: the Number One Pond, the Trojan Pond at Bethlehem and the Highmont Pond at the Highmont operation as well as backfilling the Heustis and Jersey lona Pits at Bethlehem. These areas are currently not in use, and are in the reclamation phase prior to decommissioning. This paper focusses on tailings management in the main facility. As indicated in Figure I, the facility includes three tailings dams: these are, going from east to west, the H-H, J-J and L-L Dam, named after the alignment alternatives in the initial feasibility studies. From 1970 to 1977 Canadian Bechtel Ltd. advised Highland Valley Copper's predecessor company Lornex, on tailings storage at the H-H and J-J Dams and on the L-L Dam. Since the completion of the L-L Starter Dam in 1977, Klohn Leonoff Ltd. has provided ongoing consultation and construction monitoring of the raising of the L-L and the H-H Dams. The J-J Dams is currently buried by deposited tailings. This paper reviews key tailings management focusses and main features of the tailings facility."

Along with tires and transmission systems, engines have been a limiting factor in the growth of large off- highway trucks. The problem, primarily, has been the development of reliable, high-performance engines that are not prohibitively heavy or expensive. For many years, horsepower to overall truck weight ratios have been in the vicinity of 300 lb per hp for rear dump units up to 50 tons capacity. This ratio is obviously very poor when compared to the much lighter and smaller highway trucks, which frequently have a performance ratio of 100 lb per hp. Unfortunately, the larger mining trucks have not been able to match even the 50-ton trucks, and in some cases, ratios have dropped as low as 450 lb per hp. This results in a performance of only 67% of that achieved by the older smaller trucks. Thus, the message is clear: what is needed is more horsepower and less weight.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines through- out the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above mines throughout the coalfields. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10-pct false alarm rate, the expected probability of detecting a miner's signal from a depth of 1,000 ft is 54 pct; at 500 ft it is 95 pct. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 pct and 50 pct, respectively, of U.S. coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at a depth of 1,000 ft, for every 3 db of improvement in signal-to-noise ratio, the probability of detection increases 6 to 8 pct.

Further pile load testing has been carried out at Canary Wharf to compare the performance of base grouted and ungrouted bored piles founded in the Thanet Sand. The testing regime included three preliminary test piles and two working test piles. The results of these tests are summarised in Table 1 below. Two of the preliminary test piles were located only 14m apart to compare the performance of a base grouted and ungrouted pile in similar ground conditions. The load/settlement behaviour of these two preliminary test piles are compared on Figure 1. All the piles were drilled under bentonite with a drilling bucket. In the base grouted piles four grouting tubes were placed with the reinforcement cage to within 500mm of the pile toe. After the pile had been concreted these grouting tubes were then extended to the pile base by drilling and packers were installed. Grout was then injected into the four tubes simultaneously.

Like many other similar plants the ore-washer of the Longdale Iron Company has been a growth of years. In its principal features there is probably nothing new, as the type is that of the well-known " log-washer." Some of its minor details may, however, be of interest to those members who have to deal with the washing of large quantities of brown iron-ores, the principal gangue of which is clay. * Until 1883, the ore at Longdale, being of unusual purity, needed no washing, and was charged to the furnaces as it came from the mines—both lump and fine—the only attempt at cleaning being the' picking over a screen of 1½-inch iron bars, 3½ inches from center to center, set in the top of the bins through which the cars for the furnaces were loaded." "The regrettable death of James S. Cunningham, Foreman Miner, attached to Bureau of Mines Rescue Car No. 2, while wearing a half-hour type oxygen breathing apparatus in a gasoline storage tank at Trinidad, Colorado, raised the question as to the possibility of gasoline vapors permeating the rubberized fabric of the breathing bags of such apparatus.It is known that most gases and especially certain organic vapors permeate rubber, by solution or a similar process. The rubber becomes saturated with the gas and if a concentration of gas is maintained on one side of the rubber sheet it slowly gives off gas from the other side. It of course takes some time for the gas to diffuse through the rubber and the length of time before it reaches the other side is proportional to the thickness of the rubber. The amount of gas that passes through per unit of area in unit time increases with the concentration of gas and also varies with the structure and composition of the rubber.It has been suggested that the gasoline vapor could not have penetrated into the interior of an oxygen breathing bag because the pressure is greater on the inside, but this is not true as the process of permeation by solution in the rub¬ber is affected only by the difference in the partial pressures of gasoline vapor on the inside and outside of the bag. The positive oxygen pressure on the inside can only prevent the entrance of gasoline vapor through measurable holes, and has no effect on permeation by diffusion through the rubber.A sample of gasoline was obtained from the tank in which Cunningham met his death. Examination by Dr. E. W. Dean of the Petroleum Division of the Bureau of Mines gave the following results.This shows the gasoline to be heavy and typical of the gasolines sold throughout Colorado for motor fuel A. Salvus half hour oxygen apparatus was arranged with the breathing bag only in a gas tight box in which the space was kept saturated with the vapor of this gasoline. The main part of the apparatus was outside the box. Oxygen from the apparatus was breathed by a man in the usual manner. Gas samples were taken from the box at intervals to determine the concentration of gasoline vapor, also samples of the oxygen breathed were taken from a side tube in the mouthpiece. The room temperature was 75°F. The concentration of gasoline vapor in the box at the beginning of the test was 4.3%. The man breathing from the apparatus thought he detected gasoline in his oxygen in two minutes after starting the test. Analysis of the inspired oxygen at this time showed 0.03% gasoline vapor. The same man remained on the apparatus for 18 1/2 minutes without suffering any ill effects. His place vas then taken by another man who wore the apparatus until the oxygen was exhausted without noticing more than a trace of gasoline at any time. At the end of the test the inspired oxygen contained 0.07% gasoline vapor. The total time of test was 38 minutes."

The effect of small copper additions on the mar-tensitic transformation behavior in Au-47.5 at. pct Cd was studied by measuring electrical resistivity as a function of temperature. The transformation behavior was found to change and transformation start (M,) temperatures for both the ß to ß' and ß to ß' transformations were depressed substantially by the addition of small amounts of copper. Both M, temperatures were lowered approximately 70°C per at. pct Cu. Copper also had the effect of narrowing the transformation hysteresis region (resistivity us temperature), and for the alloy Au-47.5 Cd-1.5 Cu there was little or no hysteresis; in this alloy, the reverse transfmmation upon heating apparently occurs below the thermodynamic equilibrium temperature, To. THE ß phase in the Au-Cd system occurs at the electron/atom ratio 3/2, and is similar to other ß phases in alloys based on copper, silver, or gold. It is of the CsCl type, in which a considerable degree of long-range order persists to the melting temperature.' The phase boundaries of the ß phase are not known precisely below 300° C, but at room tem- perature the phase exists from approximately 46 to 52* at. pct Cd.2 At low temperatures, the ß phase transforms in a diffusionless (martensitic) manner. Alloys having a composition near 47.5 pct Cd transform upon slow cooling to an orthorhombic3 phase, ß', at - 60°C. Alloys having a composition near 49.0 pct Cd, transform at - 30°C into a phase, ß", which has been recently identified as trigonal.4 Alloys having compositions near 48.5 pct Cd will transform into both the 0' and 0" phases over a range of temperatures. One of the main functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to obtain and disseminate information that will promote safety in and around mines, and the health and safety of employees engaged in mining. Serious health and safety conditions arising out of contamination of air in metal mines by dust, fumes from explosives and fires, and absorption of oxygen by timber and other causes, led the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the United States Public Health Service in the study of dust occurrence and ventilation in metal mines in various parts of the country. A. J. Lanza, of the U. S. Public Health Service, and Edwin Higgins, mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1915, made a detailed study in the mines around Joplin, Mo.; their reports1 are now available. In 1916, 1917, and 1918, a similar study was made in the Butte, Mont., region by Doctor Lanza and D. Harrington, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines; the reports of this investigation will be available soon. In 1919, the study was continued in some of the Arizona mines by D. Harrington, of the Bureau of Mines, and G. E. McElroy and R. A. Koronski, of the U. S. Public Health Service, the underground work being completed in June, 1920; these reports are now being prepared for publication. In the spring of 1920, the scope of the work was extended, with D. Harrington in charge as supervising mining engineer, and short studies were made in the mines of the Coeur d' Alenes in Idaho and around Oatman, Ariz. It is hoped soon to extend the work into mines of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, and ultimately to other states should the mining companies be willing to coöperate. Although the situation in the oil industry during the past year has not been conducive to large expenditures for development and research, there is little indication that such expenditures have been curtailed. While few outstanding achievements have been reported, considerable progress has been made in the development of new product,s and the adaptation of petroleum derivatives to new uses. The most important question facing the refiner today is the antiknock quality of his gasoline. This year has seen the widespread adoption of the term "octane number" as a measure for anti-knock values, and in the latter months of the year the public has been made acutely aware of this condition through competitive advertising. Gasoline is no longer priced on volatility and gravity alone, but on octane number as well; and premiums are being paid for material of relatively high octane rating. The situation has grown more and more competitive and has forced refiners continually to raise the octane rating of their regular and competitive grades, and at this writing the same situation exists for premium grades which have possessed relatively high anti-knock properties for some time. Straight-run gasoline produced from paraffin-base or semiparaffin-base crudes has an inherently low anti-knock value, and in order to convert this material to a higher quality it has been found necessary to crack an increasing percentage of the crude oil charge. By completely cracking the heavier portions of the crude and blending back with the straight-run gasoline, it has been possible to produce an average of 63 to 65 octane number gasoline on average Mid-Continent crude. This operation carried to the fullest extent does not suffice, however, and the recent and rapid development of the so-called '(reforming unit," has resulted. The straight-run gasoline fraction is cut into two parts: a light, low boiling point gasoline; and a heavy gasoline or naphtha. The latter containing the low anti-knock portions of the gasoline, is sent through a re-forming unit and subjected either to high temperature or pressure, or both, which materially increases its octane number. The abandoned Belle Eldridge Mine near Deadwood, South Dakota, is on land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. The mine produced primarily lead and zinc during the first half of the twentieth century. The BLM has expressed concern about acidic drainage as well as elevated arsenic levels in tailings and waste rock at the site. The mine site was evaluated for remediation in 1998 and 1999. Recent reclamation and remediation work included substantial regrading of waste rock, removal of material where metal loading were of concern, and re-routing of drainage from an adit. Trenching at the site shoed a greater volume than originally calculated during site characterization. Material was removed to a repository that was constructed at a nearby drainage divide. Because of physical hazards, the BLM has decided to remove some historic structures. However, a search of mine records and an inventory of archival materials were complete to preserve the history of the site.

FRIEND recently remarked that the career of Scott Turner is characterized by Work and Wild -A Ducks. To these might be added Accomplishment and Persistent Fishing. All of these elements are manifestations of his character. The diversions-hunting and fishing-are in the nature of the proverbial trolley conductor's holiday, for many of Turner's years have been spent in the outdoors, often in distant lands, as in Spitzbergen, where the ducks pictured below were bagged. The election of Scott Turner to the presidency of the Institute marks the culmination of a quarter century of membership, during the last two years of which he has been vice-president. He was born at Lansing, Mich., on July 31, 1880, and received his A.B. at the University of Michigan in 1902, with a B.S. and E.M. at the Michigan College of Mines in 1904. Since then he has been granted two honorary degrees, D.Sc. from the Colorado School of Mines, and D.Eng. from the University of Michigan, but he still prefers to be called "Scott" rather than "Doctor." Government service was not a new experience for Turner when he was appointed Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines by Secretary Hoover in 1925, for his first employment after graduation was as Field Assistant in the U. S. Geological Survey in Oregon and Idaho. This was followed by work in Tombstone, Ariz.; then his first foreign engagement in 1905-6 as superintendent of the San Pablo Gold Mining Co. in Panama. Uno de los principales objetivos de los trabajos analíticos del laboratorio químico, es la determinación del sílice libre como sustancia causal de la silicosis en los yacimientos mineros. Sin embargo y durante mucho tiempo, se creía que los minerales compuestos de silicatos (silicio y oxígeno) contenían grandes cantidades de sílice libre, olvidando que dicho elemento está compuesto solo de cuarzo puro. En este aspecto, el objetivo del presente trabajo radica en la búsqueda de reactivos químicos que disuelvan solamente los silicatos, sin alterar la sílice libre. Para ello, es preciso evaluar el porcentaje de dicho compuesto a través de dos métodos: químicos y los físicos. Los primeros se subdividen en el método de Goldmabn, de Knofp, Durkan Landry y Talvitie, mientras que en los segundos, tenemos al método petrográfico, método de difracción de rayos, de fusión, de diferencia térmica y sedimentación. De acuerdo a la aplicación de los métodos primeros, se comprobó que solo el método químico Talvitie es el más idoneo para la determinación del compuesto, dado que ahorra tiempo al disolver los silicatos en polvos industriales en un período de 20 a 30 minutos, así como por el uso de un equipo de laboratorio menos sofisticado, obteniendo como resultado el 39.7% en su composición y una desviación standard de 0.39. "The efficiency of hydrochloric acid (HCl) leaching of gold from low grade gold-bearing material has been investigated in the presence of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) to produce in situ chlorine gas which is an oxidizing agent able to oxidize gold metal to its soluble forms. The effect of concentrations of HCl, NaOCl, and mixtures of HCl + NaOCl was sought. Iron and potassium present in the feed were leached and consumed all the HCl. Gold found as inclusion in pyrite was not exposed to the lixiviant. Therefore, leaching of gold from low grade gold-bearing material in aqueous chlorine solution is not an effective process for now.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy of gold is commonly based on cyanide leaching solution. Due to the environmental concerns related to cyanidation and mercury processes, and inefficiency of cyanide gold leaching to dissolve refractory ores, sustainable alternative lixiviant systems, capable of generating gold (I) and gold (III) complexes must be studied. Amongst non-cyanide gold lixiviants there is the chloride/chlorine system (Hilson and Monhemius, 2006; Senanayake, 2004; Pilsniak and Trochimczuck, 2007; Wang et al., 2007; Reeves et al., 1999; Khodadad et al., 2008).In practice, the most oxidizing agents utilized for the leaching of gold as chloride, are chlorine (Cl2) or hypochlorite (HOCl) which are either generated in situ by suitable reaction or added in solution (Adamson, 1972). The dissolution of gold concentrate using hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and sodium hypochlorite (Cl-/HOCl system) were studied (Puvada and Murthy, 2006). The effect of NaOCl and NaCl concentrations were also investigated. The leaching was performed under the following conditions; time: 4h, solid–liquid ratio = 1:4, at room temperature. It was found that the increase of the NaOCl concentration from 25 to 75 g/L did not have any meaningful effect on the recovery of gold which was about 30% (experimental conditions; S/L ratio = 1:4, NaCl concentration: 25 g/L, HCl concentration: 0.35 M). It was also found that from 25 g/L to 200 g/L NaCl, the recovery of gold rose from 30% to 40% (experimental conditions; S/L ratio: 1:4, NaOCl concentration: 25 g/L, HCl concentration: 0.35 M)."

The transport of slurry within the ball mill depends on the peripheral velocity and porosity of the ball charge. Residence time distribution and mill hold up are of-ten used as indicators of the mode of transport. In this work, the transport problem is tackled via direct simulation of the three dimensional motion of the ball charge. In doing so, the following quantities are calculated: (i) ball size distribution as a function of the distance from the feed end of the mill (ii) mean peripheral and longitudinal velocity and longitudinal velocity of balls of different sizes, and (iii) the spatial distribution of porosity within the ball charge. Hence, the problem of transport is handled as a motion of part of the slurry with the ball charge and part as hydrodynamic flow through the porous structure.
