"Coal pillars are prone to scaling over time, and are progressively reduced in size and consequently subjected to increased load and reduced strength. The effective factor of safety therefore reduces. Databases of failed and stable pillars cannot, therefore, be regarded as definitive.More than a decade has passed since the first attempt to predict the lifespan of pillars. This paper presents a review based on the new database and pillar strength equations. The methodology for the analysis is based on the fact that pillars scale. The ultimate safety factor (defined as the ratio between strength and load at the time of failure) is derived, followed by an estimate of the rate of pillar scaling, which results in an estimate of the expected time of failure.It is suggested that the predicted lifespan should not be used as an absolute indicator of expected pillar life, but rather as an index – the pillar life index (PLI) – to complement the safety factor and related probability of failure when evaluating pillar stability. A pillar with a predicted lifespan of less than 500 years would be regarded as being in danger of imminent collapse, while a lifespan of at least 1 000 years should be required for long-term purposes.The differences between this analysis and that published in 2003 constitute a strong case for regular reviews of all the empirically based stability indicators, namely the safety factor, probability of failure, and the PLI. Reviews at 10 year intervals appear to be required.The constants in the proposed method are valid only for the Witbank No. 1, 2 and 4 seams and the Highveld No. 2 and 4 seams.IntroductionIt is well known that over time, coal pillars are prone to scaling, and thus are progressively reduced in size and consequently subjected to increased load and reduced strength. The concept of the safety factor is based on the pillar strength obtained by statistical analysis of pillar dimensions immediately, or within a month after mining, when the surveys are conducted. Strictly speaking, the safety factor as commonly used is valid only immediately after mining, and it continues to reduce thereafter. The ideal situation would be to base analyses of pillar strength on pillar dimensions at the time of failure, but that is simply not possible because the real dimensions cannot be measured at that time."

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) is Australia's largest company with widespread commercial interests ranging from steel productin to minerals, oil and gas recovery. While these interests are worldwide, the Company operates or is partner in more than 30 Australian mining ventures. BHP Engineering (BHPE) is the in-house consultant to BHP but is also the largest consultancy in Australia available to general industry. Australian Groundwater Consultants Pty Limited (AGC) is a large, independent consultancy offering specialist services in all aspects of water resources, waste management and environmental engineering, both in Australia and overseas. AGC is particularly well regarded within the mining industry and has a considerable record of providing solutions for mine water related issues. By drawing on the extensive combined experience of AGC and BHP Engineering, this paper will summarize some of the unique ways in which water interacts with and impacts on mining operations in Australia, particularly in matters such as: Slope Stability Drainage and Dewatering Production Cost (Transport, Drilling, Blasting, etc) Water Supply Water Management Tailings and Waste Management Environmental Issues. The paper will also illustrate the cost benefit of providing major engineering works for reduction in total mining cost. It will be shown that, through advance planning and close interaction between outside experts (ie consultants) and on- site personnel, very significant operational cost savings can be made while at the same time achieving a safe and responsible mining environment.

The existence of fluid migration across fixed boundaries in oil and gas reservoirs has been known for many years. Several techniques have been developed in the past for estimating The rate of migration across fixed boundaries as an aid in planninng field development and in the valuation of oilfied properties. The principal de/errc7nt to the use of these techniques lies in the rather extensive reservoir and field data required for ca1cula1ion.s of fluid migration. For this reason, a new, simplified procedure has been developed which makes possible the calculation of fluid migration with a minimum of field and resrvoir data. This new technique is based on certain. solutions of the differential equations describing flour in the reservoir which assume, for the portion of the reservoir of interest, that the formation can be approximated by a homogeneous rock of uniforrn thickness, that only a Single mobile fluid phase exists, and {hut fluid production at the well is solely a result of expun.rioti of rile resersoir fluds. The results of the, present work are compiled in a set of curves. These curves can he used to calculate both rule and cummulative fluid migration when the abovc assumptions ore ju.r/ifiril. The only data required for such calcu1ations are the production hisrories of all wells in the field, the permeability and porosity of the reservoir., the, compressibility and viscosity of the fluid. and the shape of the reservoir, INTRODUCTION The migration of fluids across fixed boundaries in oil and gas reservoirs has long been recognized as an engineering and economic problem, but no methods for estimating the extent of migration during the development stage of a reservoir have been published. The investigation reported here has been directed toward providing a simple technique for estimating the extent of such migration and has therefore been restricted to the simple case of a homogeneous reservoir of uniform thickncss containing compressible liquids. It is assumed that only a single mobile fluid phase exists and that fluid production at the wells is solely by expansion of the reservoir fluids. Obviously, few, if any. reservoirs conform to these assumptions during their entire productive life. On the other hand, most reservoirs approximate fluid expansion reservoirs during their initial stages of primary production. Consequently, the present work should be applicable during the field development of most reservoirs, regardless of whether or not they ultimately are gas cap, dissolved-gas, or water-drive reservoirs. The mathematical analysis of this problem has been outlined in the Appendix, while the results of the investigation are presented in the following discussion. DISCUSSION OF CALCULATION PROCEDURE SLNGLE Well, Ini-iimite Reservoir The procedure for calculating fluid migrations is based on solutions of the partial differentia1 equations describing the flow of a homogeneous compressible liquid in a homogeneous reservoir of uniform thickness. This differential equation has the form of the well-known diffusion equation. The amount of published literature in the field of mechanical properties of magnesium alloys is not great; particularly with respect to rolled alloys. Haughton and Prytherchl have summarized most of the articles to 1937, including their own work on sheet. Although many papers can be found dealing with the technology of magnesium and the alloys now in commercial use, there does not seem to be any work dealing exclusively with the variation in properties of rolled alloys as caused by changes in alloy composition. Comparison of published data reveals considerable discrepancies in properties of alloys of the same composition, probably due to differences in the details of working and heat-treating followed by different workers. The purpose of this paper is to study the properties of alloys in conditions where the effects of such differences have been eliminated. It is well known that the strength and ductility of metals are functions of the working and heat-treating they have received, as well as of their chemical composition. In comparing alloys with respect to these properties, therefore, all possible combinations of the variables of the fabrication procedure ought to be carried out on each alloy. One or more of these treatments mill produce the highest ductility, or strength, or both. These highest properties would then be selected as characteristic of each alloy, and alloys would be compared on the basis of those properties. Thus a separation of the effect of composition and that of workiiig and heat-treating would be achieved. In this paper, however, a compromise with completeness has been made by carrying out a restricted number of treatments. As a consequence, the properties obtained are not necessarily the best that the alloy is capable of exhibiting; but since all alloy3 have been treated by the same method, the results ought to be comparable. The elements selected for the study comprise a class that will alloy easily with magnesium, and that are reblatively cheap. Each was added in different amounts, up to a limit that varied with the element.

Improved metals and other commodity prices have caused the mining industry to open new mines, re-evaluate development opportunities at potential mines and increase production at existing ones. This sense of renewed optimism is being seen at operations and development projects around the world. Except in the United States. The regulatory structure there has not allowed the domestic industry to share much in mining’s resurgence. It can still take up to 10 years to permit a new mine. And, while Clinton-era regulations regarding mill sites have been put on hold, existing mines that wish to expand operations still face significant regulatory and environmental hurdles. But things may begin to improve in the United States.

In underground coal mining, one of the biggest challenges is spontaneous combustion, which will not only present safety hazards but result in reserve losses as a result of burnt coal. The released heat coupled with other combustible gases commonly encountered underground will significantly increase the risk of explosion. In this paper, three-phase foam as an environment-friendly fire fighting agent composed of nitrogen, water and fly ash is introduced. The nitrogen facilitates inertization of the fire zone; the water helps cool down the fire and the fly ash can closely cover the coal to isolate the oxygen. What's more, the fly ash and the foaming agent are good free radical absorption. The comprehensive merits mentioned above make three-phase foam quite effective in quenching spontaneous combustion. Experiments indicate that three-phase foam can significantly slow down the temperature rise of coal during oxidation. The comparison between slurry and three-phase foam shows that the latter one is capable of flowing upward in the porous media so as to extinguish the high-point fire and concealed fire.

The study is devoted to the earth's surface protection and is aimed at improving the ecological safety of the territories in the mining industry. Identification of the diagnostic signs and quantitative criteria for the disturbance of soil geochemical properties and water chemistry represent an important scientific task in anthropogenically disturbed landscapes in the context of comprehensive exploitation of mineral resources. The study is aimed at geological and ecological analysis of the migration peculiarities of the man-caused chemicals and elements in soils and soil-surface water environment. We received new results. These results assist in estimating the peculiar features of distribution of heavy metals total and mobile forms (Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb), depending on the physical and chemical parameters of the disturbed soils. We obtained the empirical relationships describing heavy metals localization and accumulation processes depending on buffer properties of soils (pH, N, Corg), salinization factor and contamination with oil products. Anthropogenic geochemical barriers spontaneously formed in the area of industrial facilities were revealed in the territories of industrial facilities. These barriers prevent the further distribution of elements and pollutants in the landscapes. This makes it possible to create their artificial analogues in order to limit further migration of pollutants and to immobilize valuable components. Analysis of diagnostic features of soils geoecological state and factors influencing the distribution of heavy metals in the soil-surface water geosystem allows the identification of the geochemical barrier type with the aim of elements immobilization in a limited area of the territory. We applied modern physical and chemical methods of analysis, a package of statistics programs in Excel and modeling techniques. The proposed approach is innovative and therefore can be attractive. The accumulation of useful components losses in mineral resources exploitation is a promising reserve for their recovery from the soil with specifically arranged properties. The methodology of this research is also promising for the prediction of the environmental emergencies of the anthropogenic nature. This is consistent with the requirements of state control of environmental safety in the course of comprehensive exploitation of mineral resources.

This paper is concerned with the theoretical study of UHF radio communication in coal mines, with particular reference to the rate of loss of signal strength along a tunnel, and from one tunnel to another around a comer. Of prime interest are the nature of the propagation mechanism and the prediction of the radio frequency that propagates with the smallest loss. Our theoretical results are compared with measurements made by Collins Radio Co. This work was conducted as part of the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center's investigation of new ways to reach and extend two-way communications to the key individuals that are highly mobile within the sections and haulage ways of coal mines.

In this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigation, numerical modeling is used to evaluate the degree the pillar strength is increased with a rectangular pillar over a square pillar. Three-dimensional models are developed with pillar sizes and geometries typical of underground limestone mines in the United States. Physical properties for the models are based on geotechnical surveys of nearly 30 underground limestone mines. To examine the effects of pillar length on pillar strength with the modeling, a parametric study was conducted where the pillar width was held constant while the length and height were varied resulting in width-to-height ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 and width to length ratios ranging from 1 to 6. There are two aspects to pillar strength and failure. At relatively low stresses, pillars can fail as a result of geologic structure. At greater depths and sufficient extraction ratios, the pillars can also fail as a result of the vertical stresses exceeding the pillar strength. The effects of increasing pillar length regarding both strength aspects are presented in this study. Equations were developed for the increase in pillar strength with both height and length based on the model results. The results from these equations were compared to those from previously developed empirical equations for rectangular pillars. For the more slender limestone pillars with a width-to-height ratio below one, there is little increase in pillar strength for length-to-width ratios above 2 and almost no increase with length for a width-to-height ratio of 0.5. Only with the more squat pillars is there a significant improvement in strength with length. The gain in pillar strength with length for the pillars is explained by the change in the ratio of the area of the pillar affected by the ends to the area of the pillar. For the squattest pillar, the change in strength is also affected by an increase in pillar confinement along the central length of the pillar as the pillar transitions from a square to a long rectangular pillar. With geologic structure, added pillar length can significantly improve the pillar strength, depending on the strike of that structure with respect to the long pillar axis.

The problem of unsteady-state gas flow through porous media has been solved numerically only for the case of linear or radially symmetric reservoirs. A recently introduced numerical method for solving the unsteady-state heat flow equation in two dimensions is applied to the calculation of the depletion of a square region containing a perfect gas. Solutions are presented in graphical form for various values of dimensionless parameters. The solutions are compared with published .solutions for radial reservoirs. I NTR ODUCTION The problem of unsteady-state flow of gas through porous media gives rise to a second-order non-linear partial differential equation for which no analytical solution has been found. Numerical approximations to solutions of the gas flow problem have been obtained by the stepwise solution of an associated difference equation1,2. However, the methods so far developed have required that the reservoir be either linear or radially symmetric. This restriction in shape has been necessary so that only two independent variables be considered, namely, one distance variable and time. In order to deal with reservoirs having more realistic shapes, it is necessary to develop numerical procedures for the solution of the gas flow problem involving two distance variables. A numerical procedure, denoted as the alternating-direction implicit method, for the solution of the heat-flow problem in two dimensions has recently been introduced" By the use of this procedure, approximate solutions have been obtained for heat-flow problems in a square8, and in regions having various non-rectangular boundariesa. Because of the similarity between the equation for heat conduction in solids and the equation for gas flow in porous media, it is reasonable to expect that the alternating-direction implicit method should also be useful for solving the gas flow problem in various two-dimensional regions. Solutions have been calculated for the simplest two-dimensional region, a square reservoir with a single well in the center. While reservoirs of such simple geometry seldom, if ever, exist, the solution of this problem is of some practical importance because it is also the solution of another problem, that of determining the depletion history about an individual well in an infinite uniform reservoir containing wells spaced throughout on a square lattice and producing equally from each well. Finally, it is of interest to compare solutions for a square reservoir with those for a circular reservoir and to determine the effect of the shape of the boundary for that particular case. A number of investigators have studied the electrokinetic potential (?) of kaolinite as a function of pH. (1,2,3,4,5) These investigators all agree that the ? is negative except at quite acid pH values. The actual shapes of the curves reported by the several authors vary considerably. In spite of the general negative character of kaolinite the mineral has a rather high anion exchange capacity. (6,7,8) The cation exchange capacity is the lowest for the clay minerals. (6) It has been shown that anionic surfactants adsorb readily onto the mineral even up to neutrality, often in quantities exceeding the reported anion exchange capacity. (7,8) At least part of the anionic adsorption should be onto positive edge sites thought to exist on the mineral. (9,10) In the present study ? of kaolinite was measured as a function of pH using both the streaming potential (sp) and microelectrophoresis (m.e.p.) methods. In addition ? was measured at various pH values as functions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride (TMDAC) concentrations. In some experiments decyl alcohol (DA) was added.

The NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL) is a unique research facility, located about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that is designed to provide a full-scale mining environment for testing and evaluation of mine health and safety technologies. The LLL occupies more than 400 acres and is composed of surface test and training areas and an underground mine. The Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) was built at an abandoned commercial limestone quarry where surface mining ceased in the late 1960's. Later, new underground development was constructed to simulate modern-day coal mining scenarios; including room-and-pillar and longwall mining layouts. In January 1994, a sinkhole opened southeast of the No. 4 Portal of the LLEM and since then, the area of the underground failure and surface deformation has continued to expand and now includes several interconnected sinkholes. A concern developed that the overburden instability could expand and affect the structural integrity of the nearby highwall and the No. 4 Portal. It was unsafe to conduct a detailed underground survey of the mine in this area because the mine roof conditions near the No. 4 Portal had deteriorated significantly. It was decided to investigate the overburden conditions near the No. 4 Portal using ground penetrating radar (GPR). A GPR survey grid was located along an access road that passes over the top of the portal. To delineate the mine conditions near the portal, antennas whose frequency spectra produced pulses centered near 100- and 200-MHz were used. The results of the GPR survey suggests that the overburden rock units appear to be laterally consistent to a depth of about 15-ft. Below that point, the overburden appears to be significantly disturbed and it was hypothesized that this area contains a large roof fall. A follow-up ground truth survey of the mine roof conditions was conducted from the mouth of the portal. It is concluded that the observations and measurements made from the radar records appear to be correct as a large roof fall was observed and measured from the mine portal area.

Dundee Cement Company was incorporated in 1958. The equity capital for the venture was supplied by a Swiss firm called Holderbank Financier and a group of its principals. Holderbank Financier, a holding company, is a direct outgrowth of Holderbank Cement Company, a company founded in 1912 by the father of Dr Hans Gygi who is the president of Dundee Cement Company and a member of the Board of Holderbank Financier. From one plant in 1912 located in Zurich, Switzerland, Holderbank grew to its present size of 32 plants in 17 countries, having a capacity of 90 million barrels of cement per year. Dundee Cement Company constructed its first cement plant near the little town of Dundee, Michigan. This site was selected because there is an abundance of limestone and clay of the correct chemical composition for cement manufacture and the deposit was advantageously located near the large population centers of Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, and Chicago. Construction of the 5. 5 million barrel, two kiln, plant was completed and the plant started up in the fall of 1959. After a year or two of the usual problems in a new plant and the expected difficulty of breaking into a nearly saturated market, Dundee began to prosper.

El primer mito refiere al concepto de empresa como algo definido, donde hay una sola definición"correcta" del término puesto que se usaron diferentes enfoques (administrativo y jurídico) y por ende, se crean problemas en la evaluación del comportamiento de empresas públicas. El segundo mito señala que la empresa pública en Latinoamérica es un fenómeno post- depresión -en tanto es el resultado de la depresión de la segunda guerra mundial y estas se limitaron a generar una infraestructura mínima de apoyo a explotadores de la riqueza agrícola de la región. El tercer mito muestra que las empresas públicas son parásitos paraestatales, cuya función primordial es engullir subsidios de las aarcas públicas. El error estriba en el concepto errado del término subsidio y donde se aplica a una situación de dependencia perpetua impueta a la empresa. El último mito señala que las empresas públicas son inferiores a las empresas privadas debido a la clasificación por la naturaleza de su propiedad.

THE objectives of this communication are to present the solid-solution strengthening data for silver-base zinc single crystals and to evaluate the importance of strength contributions from several mechanisms through the use of this data combined with that for the silver-base aluminum case.' Some features of the yield point behavior of silver-base zinc crystals were previously reported.' Silver-base zinc alloys were prepared by induction melting 99.99 pct Ag with 99.9 pct Zn in high-purity graphite crucibles contained in argon-filled quartz tubes. After the first melting, the ingots were cut into short lengths, redistributed in the molds, and remelted in order to reduce solute-concentration variations. Alloy single crystals were then grown from the melt through the use of a modified Bridgeman technique which consisted of lowering the graphite crystal mold through a hot zone at a rate of 3/8 in. per hr. As in the melting operation, the molds were contained in argon-filled quartz tubes. Gage lengths 2 cm in length were introduced by both spark machining (circular cross sections) and abrading and acid etching (rectangular cross section) followed by electropolishing (a comparison of the critical resolved shear-stress values prepared by the two techniques showed no differences in strength values). The final cross-sectional areas of the crystals were approximately 5 sq mm. Prior to testing, the crystals were annealed at 600°C for 20 hr in argon atmospheres, furnace-cooled, and lightly electropolished. Crystal orientations were determined using the back-reflection method. The tensile testing was done on a Model FM Instron at a strain rate of 1(T4 per sec. Test temperatures of 77", 200°, and 400°K were attained by immersing the specimens in liquid nitrogen, dry ice-acetone mixtures, and silicone oil, respectively. The critical resolved shear-stress (CRSS) values for silver-base zinc crystals as a function of composition and testing temperature are given in Fig. 1. It will be noted that the CRSS for silver-base zinc solid solutions, as in the silver-base aluminum1 case, depends on temperature in a manner typical of fcc solid solutions: at high temperatures (-300°K and above), the CRSS is relatively temperature-independent but becomes strongly dependent on temperature at lower testing temperatures. A reasonable picture of solid-solution strengthening for silver-rich solutions at room temperature based on "direct" strengthening mechanisms3 is as follows. Since silver alloys have low stacking-fault energies, extended dislocations are expected and it is possible that Suzuki locking4 makes the major contribution to the room-temperature solute strengthening. This provides essentially temperature-independent strengthening since thermal motions of the dislocation line are not large enough to aid the dislocation in escaping the solute atmosphere extending over the fault width. "Ancient and modern coastal deposits of heavy mineral sands (HMS) are the principal source of several heavy industrial minerals, with mining and processing operations on every continent except Antarctica. For example, HMS deposits are the main source of titanium feedstock for the titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigments industry, obtained from the minerals ilmenite (Fe2+TiO3), rutile (TiO2) and leucoxene (an alteration product of ilmenite). HMS deposits are also the principal source of zircon (ZrSiO4), from which zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) is obtained for uses mostly in refractory products. Sometimes monazite [(Ce,La,Nd,Th) PO4] is recovered as a byproduct mineral, sought for its rare earth elements, and thorium (Ault and others, 2016; Sengupta and Van Gosen, 2016; Van Gosen and Tulsidas, 2016).HMS are sediments containing dense (heavy) minerals that accumulate with sand, silt and clay in coastal environments, locally forming economic concentrations of the heavy minerals (Fig. 1). Economic (mined) HMS deposits include Holocene sediments on modern coasts, such as examples in India and Brazil, as well as coastal deposits formed by transgressions and regressions of the seas during intervals in the Quaternary, Tertiary and Cretaceous, such as in Australia and the southeastern United States. Economic deposits typically contain heavy-mineral concentrations of at least two percent. Individual heavy minerals are commonly defined as minerals with a specific gravity greater than approximately 2.9 g/cm3. These minerals are generally resistant to chemical weathering and physical degradation and thus survive well in fluvial and coastal environments. Heavy minerals in coastal HMS deposits may include, in order of general abundance, ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile, magnetite, zircon, staurolite, kyanite, sillimanite, tourmaline, garnet, epidote, hornblende, spinel, iron oxides, sulfides, anatase, monazite, cassiterite and xenotime. Of these, ilmenite, leucoxene, rutile and zircon are the primary economic minerals. Garnet, monazite, cassiterite and xenotime are occasionally recovered as byproducts. The heavy minerals as a suite typically make up no more than 15 weight percent of a deposit and usually much less. Quartz and clay minerals form the bulk of the sediment. The geology of HMS deposits and examples of significant districts are summarized in Van Gosen and others (2014) and Hou and Keeling (2016)."

"One of the underlying reasons for the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines was the desire to promote greater safety in the mining and allied industries. Safety continues to be an important feature in the work of the bureau, and during the fiscal year 1929-30 the Bureau of Mines allotted $387,510 to the safety division out of a total appropriation of $2,249,670 (other than for helium).The safety division personnel consists of 22 engineers, 2 mine safety commissioners, 3 senior foreman miners, 18 foreman miners, 16 first-aid miners, 16 clerks, 10 cooks, and 3 laborers, a total of 90 persons. These safety workers are distributed through the 10 districts into which the United States has been divided for administration purposes. During the year 3 engineers, 1 senior foreman miner, 4 foreman miners, and 4 first-aid miners left the service. In general these men left the service to take up more lucrative positions.The 10 all-steel mine-rescue cars have headquarters as follows: Car 1, Reno, Nev.; Car 2, Raton, N. Mex.; Car 3, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Car 4, Terre Haute, Ind.; Car 5, Pineville, Ky.; Car 6, Pittsburg, Kans.; Car 7, Huntington, W. Va.; Car 8, Duluth, Minn.; Car 9, Butte, Mont.; Car 10, Des Moines, Iowa. There is also a mine-rescue car with headquarters at Juneau, Alaska. In addition, there have been established 11 mine rescue stations as follows: Birmingham, Ala.; Berkeley, Calif.; Seattle, Wash.; Evansville, Ind.; Jellico, Tenn.; McAlester, Okla.; Norton, Va.; Vincennes, Ind.; Wilkes Barre, Pa.; Salt, Lake City, Utah; and Pittsburgh, Pa.Every mine-rescue car and station is fully supplied with equipment and devices for use in case of mine fire or explosion, and at each station is an up-to-date automobile truck. At time of amine disaster the bureau's forces are immediately placed at the disposal of the authorities, State or company, with a view to giving such assistance as may be desired or available.The activities of the safety division at ordinary times are directed largely to securing and disseminating data on safety in mining. Among the numerous studies made, or being made, concerning safety and health in mining are those in connection with the causes and methods of prevention of mine explosions, explosibility of dust and gases, explosives and blasting, haulage, electricity, falls of persons or material, ventilation, dusts, high temperatures, timbering, lighting, machinery, and in fact practically anything which results or may result in acci¬dents of any kind in or around mines."

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) SACRAMENTO HILL is a mass of granite porphyry intruded along a fault between Paleozoic sediments and pre-Cambrian schists in the Bisbee district, Cochise County, Arizona. The intrusion invaded both walls of the fault to a large extent, and the accompanying extensive mineralization of the Paleozoic limestones is the locus of the great high-grade copper orebodies of the Bisbee mines. Prior to 1909, although the presence of ore in the mass of the hill itself had long been suspected, systematic exploration had not been attempted. A few shallow pits on the surface here and there had disclosed some chalcocite with associated carbonates as stringers in a mass of strongly brecciated, silicified, and iron-stained porphyry. The workings in the surrounding limestones had penetrated the porphyry in a dozen or so places for some distance from the contact but had disclosed no ore. However, the rock had been largely altered to quartz and sericite and very thoroughly impregnated with pyrite and traces of the copper sulphides. A close geological study of the conditions, both surface and underground, strengthened these suspicions, and plans for prospecting the hill were made in 1909. Reference to the accompanying illustrations, Figs. 1 and 2, will give an idea of the general appearance of the surface. The mineralization is more intense in two main zones, one at the west end and the other at the east end of the hill. The outcrop of the hill is elliptical and approximately 3,000 ft. long by 1,400 ft. wide. The Sacramento shaft, which is the main hoisting shaft of the mine and situated at the east end of the hill, as shown by the accompanying map (Fig. 3), offered a convenient base for prospecting that end of the hill, while the workings from the Holbrook shaft offered a similar opportunity at the west end. The choice of level for the first work was determined by analogy with the most favorable depth for enrichment below surface observed in the other disseminated deposits of the Southwest.
