The solubility of nitrogen in liquid Fe-18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni-0. 7 to 2.3 pct A1 alloys has been measured up to the solubility limit for the formation of aluminum nitride in the temperature range 1600° to 1700°C uszng the Sieverts' method. The solubility of nitrogen in 18-8 stainless steel increases with increasing aluminum content. Based on a nitride composition, AlN, the standard free energy of formation of aluminum nitride from the elements dissolved in liquid 18-8 stainless-steel alloys has been determined to be: ?G° = -42,500 + 20. IT in the range from 1600° to 1700° C. EVANS and pehlke1 have measured the equilibrium conditions for the formation of aluminum nitride, AlN, in liquid Fe-A1 alloys. The present study extends that work to the more complex solvent, liquid 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni (18-8) stainless steel. Recent work by Small and pehlke2 has dealt with the effect of fourth-element additions on the solubility of nitrogen in 18-8 base alloys. They found the effect of aluminum additions, up to 0.74 pct, on the solubility of nitrogen to be small. The present study covered the range from 0.74 to 2.28 pct aluminum, and by extending the composition range may be used to better define the effect of aluminum on the nitrogen solubility in these alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The Sieverts' method was used to measure the equilibrium solubility of nitrogen gas in liquid 18-8 stainless steel alloys containing 0.74, 1.49, 1.93, and 2.28 pct Al. The solubility was measured as a function of the nitrogen gas pressure at temperatures of 1600°, 1650°, and 1700°C. The apparatus used is the same as described by Small and Pehlke.2 The 100-g melts were made from Ferrovac-E high-purity iron, Crucible Steel Co.; 99.95 pct Cr, Union Carbide Corp.; 99.9 pct Ni, International Nickel Co.; and 99.99+ pct Al, Aluminum Co. of America. The aluminum was charged at the bottom of the crucible, surrounded by nickel and iron. The chromium was packed into the interstices to minimize vapor transport of the aluminum during initial melting. The hot volume of the system, measured for each melt with argon, ranged from 45 to 55 standard cu cm with a temperature coefficient of —8 x 10-3 cu cm per °C. The melt temperature was measured with a Leeds and Northrup disappearing-filament type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the center of the melt surface. The temperature calibration of the system by Small and pehlke2 was assumed. Two problems are involved in determining the solubility product of a solid, metal nitride phase in liquid iron alloys. These are: 1) establishing the point of departure from Henrian behavior at the solubility limit of the metal nitride phase; and 2) determining the composition of the solid nitride which is precipitated. Determination of the solubility product of AlN was made by admitting small amounts of nitrogen into the reaction bulb until the deviation from Sieverts' law was clearly evident in the form of a pressure halt. To obtain the solubility product at several temperatures during one run the following procedure was used: 1) add increments of nitrogen to determine the Sieverts' law line at the lowest desired temperature; 2) continue to add nitrogen to precipitate a small amount of the nitride phase; 3) increase the melt temperature 50°C to dissolve the precipitated nitride; 4) repeat step 2 until either a nitride formed or the system reached ambient pressure; if a nitride formed at 1650°C, the sequence was repeated at 1700°C. The composition of the precipitated phase was checked by an X-ray diffraction pattern obtained from powder scraped from the surface of the solidified 1.93 pct A1 melt. RESULTS AND DISCUSSlON Solubility Measurements. Fig. 1 is a typical nitrogen-absorption curve obtained from measurements on a 1.93 pct A1 alloy. Since the initial absorption of nitrogen follows Sieverts' law the nitrogen solubility is plotted as a function of the square root of the pressure of nitrogen gas in the reaction bulb. The results of the solubility measurements for all alloys studied are summarized in Table I. The slope of the Sieverts' law line for each alloy was determined. Since this is also the solubility of nitrogen at 1 atm pressure of nitrogen gas, the latter designation is used for the data. It should be noted. however, that in most cases the value lies above the solubility limit for AlN. Fig. 2 shows the effect of aluminum on the solubility of nitrogen at this reference pressure and as a function of melt temperature. The solid portions of the lines represent attainable solutions; the dashed regions lie above the limit for precipitation of AlN.

Led by a surge in coal production and prices in recent years, Colorado’s mining industry is taking part in the same revival as others states and the world. Not too many years ago, the state’s industry was languishing in the same doldrums as the rest of the mining world. Ironic for a state whose history was based on mining. Now, however, Colorado’s mining can boast increased production in all commodities produced, along with prices that allowed companies to expand, increase work forces and post improved shareholder value. So there was a lot of optimism at the Colorado Mining Association’s (CMA) 107th National Western Mining Conference in February. The conference, held in Denver, attracted more than 500 attendees and 39 exhibitors. The theme was Colorado Mines the World.

Previous analyses of small samples of mining projects have found that feasibility studies tend to well under-estimate the actual capital costs of the project. Our review of 63 mining and smelting projects completed over 4 decades confirms that as-built capital costs are, on average, 25% higher than as estimated at the bankable feasibility study stage. There appears to be little attenuation over time of this bias in capital cost estimation, at first appearing to reflect an absence of learning on the part of the consulting engineer. We instead argue that this persistence of bias is intentional, driven by a scarcity of project financing and the need to inflate the project economics in a bid to secure financing. Around this intentional bias is a considerable amount of scatter. Roughly half of all projects’ as-built capita costs fall outside of the expected ±15% of the feasibility study capital cost estimate, even after allowing for intentional estimation bias. Cost overruns of 100% or more happen in roughly 1 out of 13 projects. The data reveal that a shifted lognormal probability distribution should be used when modeling mining project capital costs in a Monte Carlo analysis.

Metal casting operations are a significant source of hazardous air pollutants. In particular, high production iron foundries emit significant quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during pouring, cooling and shakeout of iron castings made in green sand molds. End-of-the-pipeline capture and destruction methods to reduce VOC emissions add crippling costs to foundries. Alternately, the incorporation of advanced oxidants (AO) into metal casting green sand systems has been shown to reduce emissions from high production iron foundries in the US, and at the same time reduce operating costs. Cost savings are driven by the benefits of AO in clay recovery systems. Emissions reductions are the direct result of cascading AO-based reactions taking place in green sand molds. This sustainable greening of the metal casting process is a prototype for the development of other AO and non-AO process-based solutions for sustainable high temperature processing of materials. Fundamentals of AO technologies will be discussed along with the performance characteristics of AO processing systems in the metal casting industry and the breadth of other processing and remediation applications for which AO technologies have the potential to be successfully employed.

Network communication note is a cloud system for an earthwork project. It enables backhoe operators and dump truck drivers to monitor their own works in progress currently and performed up to the present, and to have opportunity to reflect on their own bearings in the earthwork operations, and then could increase their situational awareness to the actual work conditions. First, this paper presents problems and purpose. Secondly, the configuration of the network communication note is reported. Thirdly, examples of communications enhanced by the network communication note are shown. Finally, remarks are described.

The leaching behaviour of BHAS copper matte in oxygenated acidic sulphate chloride solutions at 85¦C has been studied using samples containing 34% copper, 41% lead and 12% sulphur. Copper sulphide in the matte, essentially Cu2S was found to leach in two distinct stages. Similar to the behaviour of pure chalcocite, copper dissolution in the first stage was affected by the availability of oxygen in solution. The presence of chloride ions in the leachant was essential if there was to be any leaching in the second stage (which usually commenced after about 40% of the copper had been taken into solution). Lead sulphide in the matte was oxidised to lead sulphate and formed a shell around the partially leached matte particles. Electrochemical studies showed that this lead sulphate and/or sulphur produced during leaching can form a passivating layer around the copper sulphide. However, this layer was disrupted when chloride ions were present. A Plackett-Burman analysis was used to determine the species in the recycled leach solution that affect the leaching of copper. Under the experimental conditions used, in the first stage the rate of copper dissolution was influenced by the concentrations of sulphuric acid, Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(III) and Cd(II). In the second stage, the rate was futher modified by the concentrations of Cl(I) and As(V) ions. In solutions of low acidity and high As(V) concentration, insoluble copper arsenate formed which coated the partially leached matte particles and acted as a barrier to futher reaction.

A preservação do refratário do cadinho é fator determinante para o prolongamento da vida útil de altos-fornos. Assim, o presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito da variação da composição química do gusa (silício, manganês e enxofre) sobre o bloco de carbono do cadinho, com foco na obtenção de informações que permitiram inferir sobre a viscosidade e a tensão superficial do gusa. Isto foi realizado por meio de análises via microscopia de aquecimento e ensaios para determinar a penetração de gusa em bloco de carbono a altas temperaturas. Os resultados indicaram a tendência de elevação do ângulo de contato entre o gusa e o bloco de carbono a partir do aumento do silício e do enxofre no gusa. Por outro lado, verificou-se que o ângulo de contato reduz com o aumento do manganês no gusa. Dessa forma, o gusa contendo maiores teores de silício e enxofre penetrou de forma menos significativa no bloco de carbono, enquanto que o gusa com altos teores de manganês penetrou de forma mais intensa no bloco de carbono. Esses resultados permitem estabelecer faixas de controle da composição química do gusa, em consonância com as necessidades de preservação dos altos-fornos e de sua estabilidade operacional.

"Quartz Hill is a large, low- to moderate-grade quartz vein stockwork porphyry molybdenum deposit, discovered in 1974 during a regional stream sediment geochemical reconnaissance survey of southeast Alaska conducted by United States Borax and Chemical Corporation. Mineralization is localized in the upper parts of an Upper Oligocene (30 Ma) composite quartz monzonite stock which is emplaced discordantly into older Cretaceous to Early Tertiary terrain of the Coast Range igneous metamorphic complex of the northwest North American Cordillera. Subsequent fault-controlled, complex multi-stage intrusion, concentrated in the core of the Quartz Hill stock, produced successive pulses of hydrothermal alteration and molybdenum mineralization at about 27 Ma. Overall, the deposit is tabular and flat-lying and well suited to open pit mining. The 0.05% MoS2 grade limit covers an area of approximately 1500 m by 2750 m and extends to a maximum depth of 520 m below surface. Details of grade distribution show two separate lobes of higher grade material within the larger low-grade deposit.A ten year program of exploration drilling, underground development, sampling and metallurgical testwork led to a 1983 feasibility study based on a resource of 1600 million tonnes grading 0.127% MoS2 at a 0.08% MoS2 cutoff The large size of the deposit and its homogeneous grade distribution, typically showing gradual outward decrease of grade, makes in pit grade selection practical at several cutoff levels. Cominco Ltd. now reports a Probable Resource of 210 million tonnes averaging 0.22% MoS2 with a further Possible Resource of 1100 million tonnes averaging 0.12% MoS:z. At low molybdenum metal prices which have persisted for 10 years since the molybdenum price spike of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Quartz Hill deposit is sub-economic."

TOQUEPALA is a porphyry copper deposit in which mineralization is localized by a large breccia pipe formed in close genetic relation to intrusive rocks. The deposit is in southern Peru, 55 airline miles north of the small city of Tacna and the same distance inland from the port of 110. Quellaveco and Cuajone, geologically similar deposits, lie 12 and 19 miles north of Toquepala. Chuquicamata is 400 miles to the south. The deposit is high on the southwestern slope about 20 miles from the crest of the Cordillera Occidental of the Andes Chain. It lies in a mountainous desert where the steep southwesterly slope of the Andes is dissected by a succession of rapidly downcutting, deep canyons. Local topography is moderately rugged with a dendritic drainage pattern and an elevation of 8000 to 14,000 ft. Volcanic peaks along the crest of the Cordillera rise over 19,000 ft. Local precipitation, including a little snow, amounts to about 10 in. during January and February, but general runoff in the region is slight. Throughout southern Peru the springs and streams are widely separated. Crude canals irrigate small farms on terraced slopes along the streams and provide sparse subsistence to the semi-nomadic inhabitants. During the past decade, engineering and geological explorations of the region, as well as the mineral deposits themselves, have required construction of a network of several hundred miles of roads. Before this, roads extended only a few miles inland. Many areas still can be reached only by trail. Toquepala was briefly described in 19th century geographical literature as a copper deposit, and it received desultory attention from Chilean prospectors early in the present century. It was first recognized as a mineralized zone of possible real importance by geologist O.C. Schmedeman during an exploration trip for Cerro de Paso Copper Corp. in 1937. The discovery was late as compared to earlier recognition of Chuquicamata, Potrerillos, and Braden of Chile and Cerro Verde of southern Peru. This was due partly to the region's difficult accessibility but principally to the obscure character of the outcrop evidence of copper. From 1938 until 1942 Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. partially explored the deposit by adits and diamond drillholes. This campaign was supplied by a 60-mule pack train continuously shuttling over a 30-mile trail. Northern Peru Mining & Smelting Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of American Smelting & Refining Co., undertook regional engineering stud- ies in 1945 and drill exploration in 1949. According to published data1 the deposit contains 400 million tons of open pit ore averaging a little over 1 pct Cu. It is currently undergoing large-scale development by Southern Peru Copper Corp., which is owned by American Smelting & Refining, Phelps Dodge, Cerro de Pasco, and Newmont Mining. Summary of Geology: The deposit is situated in a terrane composed of Mesozoic(?) and Tertiary volcanic rocks intruded by dioritic apophyses of the Andean Batholith. These formations are exposed in a northwesterly trending belt about 15 miles wide. Along the northeast they are unconformably overlain by Plio-Pleistocene pyroclastic rocks, which occupy much of the crest of the Andes, and along the southwest they are covered by the Moquegua formation of Pliocene(?) age. The mineralized area, oblong in shape and about 2 miles long, has been a locus of intense igneous activity. Several small intrusive bodies having irregular forms occur within and adjacent to a centrally located, large breccia pipe. The mushroom-shaped orebody consists of a flat-lying enriched zone of predominant chalcocite with a stem-like extension of hypogene chalcopyrite ore in depth within and around the pipe. This breccia pipe is relatively large and has been formed by repeated episodes of brecciation. Small satellitic pipes occur at random within a 2-mile radius of this central pipe. These too were individual sourceways of mineralization, although not always of ore grade. Within and around the zone of breccia pipes and mineralization there are a few faults and veins, but these are discontinuous random structures of minor significance. There are no regional or local systems of faults or other planar structures recognized which could account either for the mechanical development of the breccia pipes or for their localization as a group or as individuals. Hydrothermal alteration is pervasive in the zone of mineralization. Clay minerals appear to be abundant in places, but their percentages are undetermined. Quartz and sericite are the principal alteration products, and in many instances original rock textures are obliterated. The principal sulfides, hypogene pyrite and chalcopyrite and supergene chalcocite, occur mainly as vug fillings in the breccia and as small discrete grains scattered through all the altered rocks. Sulfide veinlets are relatively scarce. Sulfides are more abundant and alteration is more intense in certain rock units, such as the diorite and most of the breccias. Although the Toquepala mineral deposit is similar in most respects to the porphyry copper deposits of southwestern U. S., it most closely resembles the Braden deposit of Chile, as described by Lindgren

"The requirements for a metallurgical acid plant treating smelter gases are both unique and demanding in terms of sulphur dioxide treatment and emission control. Since start up in 1981, the copper smelter at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited has undergone several major expansions. The expansion and modification of the acid plant has been an integral part of this process. Both production demands and government regulations dictate that this metallurgical acid plant be unique in terms of operating flexibility. The variable capacity to treat a wide range of sulphur dioxide concentrations, and the operating flexibility to control emissions are the topics of this paper.INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limitied is a base metal mining and metallurgical complex located in Timmins, Ontario. The discovery of the original copper-zinc-silver orebody was announced in April, 1964. Mining operations began in 1966 with a 9000 tonne per day concentrator coming on stream in November of that year. In April 1972, a 108 000 tonne per year zinc plant was commissioned. Over the years the facilities have been expanded, such that the concentrator now has the capacity to process 13 000 tonnes of ore per day . To expand zinc production, the world's second installation of the Cominco/Sherritt pressure leaching facility was completed in 1983 to bring total zinc production capacity to 125 000 tonnes per year. In 1973, serious planning for a smelter operation began. In early 1975, after studying both continuous smelting and flash smelting processes, a decision was made to proceed with the technology offered by Mitsubishi Metal Corporation of Japan. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process was to be used for the smelter and the Onahama No.3 tankhouse technology for the copper refinery.The smelter, which uses the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process for the continuous production of blister copper from concentrate, went on line in June 1981. It has been expanded from its original capacity of 60 000 tonnes to 100 000 tonnes per year of copper.From the very early design stages for the metallurgical complex, the company had adopted a policy of constructing and operating modern plants which would meet existing and anticipated environmental standards. With this in mind, the decision was made to utilize the proven technology of fixing sulphur dioxide emissions, in the form of sulphuric acid. A 636 tonne per day single absorption contact acid plant was built to serve the zinc plant in 1972. In 1981, an 883 tonne per day double absorption contact plant was built to serve the needs of the copper smelter. The copper smelter acid plant has since been expanded to a design capacity of 1692 tonnes per day and it is the main focus of this paper."

CLEVENGER, Palo Alto, Cal.-Since the precipitation of extremely dilute solutions as regards cyanide presents one of the greatest problems of zinc-dust precipitation, I should like to ask Mr. Clark the minimum concentration in cyanide of the solution from which it is possible to precipitate satisfactorily the gold with zinc dust in Homestake practice. A. J. CLARK.-For a day's work about 0.015 per cent. That is precipitating a very low-grade solution, very low in alkalinity. It requires probably 0.2 lb. of zinc dust to the ton. JOHN A. FULTON, Melones, Cal.-At the Melones mine, we have been working very low-grade rock for a number of years, the process being amalgamation and concentration up to the last year. The value of the ore increased so that we had to supplement the concentration with a sand and slime plant. Classification was a problem, since to install classifiers would mean tearing the mill all to pieces. We are therefore making use of a Wilfley table for this purpose. A performance comparison of 14 rescue breathing apparatus was undertaken as an assessment of past and present worldwide technology. Rescue breathing apparatus are self-contained, closed-circuit breathing apparatus used for entry into areas having atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life and health. Apparatus tested were the Biomarine BioPak 45, 60, and 240; the Draeger BG 4 and BG-174A; the Litton LITPAC II; the MSA Custom 4500 II Air Mask, Chemox, and McCaa; the Sabre Selected Elevated Flow Apparatus (SEFA); the Scott Rescue-Pak; the Siebe Gorman Aerorlox and Proto Ten; and the SurvivairLP-120. The apparatus were tested on an automated breathing and metabolic simulator at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Physiological parameters monitored during the testing were average inhaled CO2 and O2, minimum inhaled CO2, inhaled wet-and dry-bulb temperatures, and peak inhalation and exhalation breathing pressures. The metabolic demand on the apparatus was 1.35 L O2/min for most of the test with two 5-min intervals of 2.5 L O2/min, the first beginning 10 min into the test and the second beginning 10 min before the end of the rated duration of the apparatus. Results presented include apparatus service life and test-averages of monitored physiological parameters. Schematic drawings and photographs of the apparatus are also included. The Draeger BG-174A and BG 4 had the highest durations—295 and 291 min, respectively. The BG 4 hadthe lowest minimum inhaled CO2 levels, attesting to the effectiveness of its CO2-absorbent canister. The SabreSEFA had the lowest average inhaled CO2 levels, due mostly to the apparently low-dead-space mask andnose cup. The MSA Air Mask, the only open-circuit device tested, had the lowest wet- and dry-bulb temperatures, with the liquid-O2-source Siebe Gorman Aerorlox having the next lowest temperatures. The only apparatus with a CO2-absorbent not in a packed-bed design, the BG-174A, had the lowest exhalation pressures. The BG 4 had the highest level of positive pressure, with the Biomarine BioPak 60, Survivair LP-120, SEFA, and Litton LITPAC II nearly as high. The BG 4 had the lowest pressure swing, with the SEFA a close second.

Various attempts have been made to build leadership and management expertise with little success. There are numerous reasons these attempts have failed. Three reasons, along with suggested solutions, will be explored: 1) lack of ownership of the development process by those affected; 2) lack of congruence of the development process used and the business strategies of the organization; and 3) a comprehensive development process. We will discuss a development model applied inside a smelter and refining complex over one year involving all levels of management. The process was credited with helping to substantially reduce cost and enable breakthroughs in production, quality and safety results.

Intense primary and cross-slip traces were observed in easy glide on Cu: 6 pct-A1 single crystals deformed in tension. A mechanism of cooperative source operation is developed which recognizes that both the applied stress and that resolved from dislocation arrays contribute to the stress on a source. By considering the stress from arrays, the activation of secondary systems in easy glide and the difference in appearance of slip markings on pure and solid-solution crystals are explained. Furthermore the cross-slip system is predicted to be second favored during easy glide for a large range of orientations. FROM many studies of easy glide in fcc metal crystals, a pattern of observations has developed which still requires full explanation. In pure copper, aluminum, and silver, the easy-glide, slip traces are fine and uniform with steps 50 to 100A on the primary* system.1-4 Yet it has not been at all clear why slip in the pure materials should occur in this way. On the contrary, one might expect, with simple slip and a low hardening rate, that the weakest sources on the primary system would operate extensively to produce strong slip traces. In a brass, however, intense slip steps up to 0.5 are found on both primary and cross-slip system4,6-9 seeger10 has pointed out that in a material of low stacking-fault energy such as a brass, extensive easy-glide cross-slip could not be thermally activated, but rather must originate on the cross-slip plane. In further explanation, the wilsdorfs4 and seeger10 noted that only the cross-slip system would not harden differently than the primary, whatever the latent hardening tendencies of other systems; therefore, in brass, which exhibits high latent hardening, the cross-slip is the only secondary system which could be expected to operate extensively, once it became active. The explanation of how the cross-slip system, on which the applied stress is low, becomes activated has been related, in a nonspecific way, to pileups by Hirsch11 and Honeycombe.l2 In the work to be described, deformation traces on solid-solution Cu: 6 pct A1 single crvstals were studied with conventional light microscopy and a mechanism proposed to explain both the observed activation of secondary systems in easy glide and the difference in appearance of slip markings on pure and solid-solution crystals. EXPERIMENTAL In preparing the Cu-A1 single crystals, rectangular bars approximately 0.4 in. by 0.4 in. by 6 in. were first machined from ingots made by vacuum melting copper of 99.999 pct and aluminum of 99.99 pct purity. They were then packed in powdered graphite and the crystals grown in a modified Bridgman apparatus at a rate of 5 mm per hr under an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. Crystal perfection as indicated by Laue back-reflection spots was good except for the last inch to freeze, which was discarded. Orientations so determined are shown in Fig. 1. Tensile specimens with a reduced gage section were obtained by masking the ends with electrical tape and chemically polishing in a solution of 20 pct HNO3, 24 pct HAc, 52 pct H3PO4, 2 pct Hcl, and 2 pct H20 at room temperature.13 Finally, the specimens were electropolished in a 30 pct ortho-phosphoric acid bath at 12 v. Tensile deformation was performed in an Instron testing machine at a strain rate of approximately 1 pct per min. During easy glide, extensive cross-slip was observed with all crystals, in spite of the low Schmid factor on this system, and in no case was any other secondary trace encountered. A certain sequence of slip-line development was associated with the extension. At yielding, intense primary traces passing completely through the crystal developed at some point on the gage section, generally near the grips; weak cross-slip traces also appeared, extending from the primary traces into the adjacent undeformed crystal, Fig. 2. During the latter part of 1930 an agreement was reached among operators in Rumania to curtail the production of oil to about 100,000 bbl. per day. This agreement lasted only a few months and 1931 shows a new peak in production with an average yield of 136,900 bbl. per day as against an average of 116,600 bbl. per day for 1930. The total production for 1931 was 49,210,000 bbl.; an increase of 18.4 per cent over the previous year's production. It is interesting to compare the percentage production of the major companies to the potential production figures determined by the Government in September, 1930 (Table l), on the basis of which the proposed curtailment was to have been made. The three companies listed first in this table show an increase in average production for 1931 over their estimated potential production rating. This increase might be attributed at least in part to the recent development of the Boldesti field, which is controlled by these companies and of which the production at present is nearly 10 per cent of the total oil output for Rumania. Among the other fields, Moreni still holds first place with an output of 33.6 per cent, followed by Gura-Ocnitzei with 29.3 per cent. This paper concentrates on ground control innovation in Europe since the first Morgantown conference, mainly from a UK perspective. In particular, it describes the rock engineering and ground control tools developed to address the mine support and design problems associated with coal mining at great depth in areas influenced by previous workings. The differences in approach across the Western European industries are also examined. Perhaps the most significant change in the period has been in the science of coal mine rock mechanics itself, with support design now based firmly on measurement, analysis and understanding. The ground control innovations described here have played their part in increasing the efficiency with which coal is mined and in increasing safety to the extent that fall of ground accidents are now rare.

The characteristics of the igneous and metamorphic bedrock, extra-hard and abrasive, of the Guadarrama Tunnels, a bi-tube project of length 28.4 km without any intermediate attack, are first commented upon. Next, a detailed discussion is given of the most relevant aspects of the performance of the four double shield type TBMs. The experience of this leads to various recommendations to be borne in mind in future designs of TBM having to work in rock of similar characteristics.
