The main value of earth magnetic measurements, outside of certain mining problems, resides in the study of deeply buried tectonic phenomena related to regional and local geology. Magnetic surveys are a necessary complement of gravimetric measurements, especially of pendulum surveys. To date, magnetometer prospecting has been used chiefly in the study of sedimentary basins where petroleum structures are associated with the uplifted basement rocks. There are, in the literature, innumerable articles dealing with such surveys as applied to oil geology but few treat of broad geological features related to regional magnetic disturbances of the earth field. An important piece of coordination work has been made by Jean Jungl for the magnetic and gravimetric measurements made in France and their geologic significance. A similar attempt at correlation of the known geology with the anomalies of the vertical component of the earth magnetic field has been made for the United States by George B. Somers2. Taking the magnetic vector as a whole, W. P. Jenny3 made a coordination of magnetism and geology for the main producing oil states of the United States. A more detailed study along the same lines is published by A. Van Weelden4 for southern Oklahoma and northern Texas; in this work magnetic and gravimetric measurements taken at stations as close as one mile apart are compiled and compared to the regional geology of the Ouachita-Amarillo uplifted area. From the literature mentioned, it is evident that reliable interpretation of magnetic' anomalies can be arrived at only when the magnetic stations are numerous and cover the area in a close net of measurements, therefore the works of Somers and Jenny, based on sparsely distributed Government measurements, can be regarded only as preliminary programs indicating lines along which further work should be done, whereas the coordination made by Van Weelden is an example of the contribution to the knowledge of regional geology that can be arrived at by the use of applied geophysics. The work described was carried out during 1917 and 1918 at the testing laboratory of Watertown Arsenal at the instigation of the Nitrate Division and later with the concurrence of the Cannon Section of the Ordnance Department, U. 8. A. The experiments follow three principal lines of work: First, the effect of nitrogen under pressure on steel containers of various compositions at a red heat; second, the effect of decomposing ammonia on various alloy steels, iron, and non-ferrous alloys; third, a new theory of the erosion of guns in respect to the effect of nitrogen in steel. Part I In the Haber process for the manufacture of ammonia from its elcnlents, it is necessary to have nitrogen and hydrogen of 1500 lb. per sq. in. (105.5 kg. per sq. cm.) at a temperature of 500 to 600' C. The steel containers for these gases gave trouble by failing without apparent cause. When the General Chemical Co. began to develop its method for the production of ammonia, it experienced the same difficulty and, knowing that the Haber process had solved the difficulty by the use of alloy steels, it made several small steel bottles of different compositions and kept them filled with these gases at this pressure and temperature until they failed. The time of service varied from a few days, for the plain steel casting, to two years for a chrome-vanadium forging. Four of these steel bottles were sent to this laboratory for investigation; they were a plain carbon-steel forging, a nickel-stee1 forging, a chrome-vanadium steel forging, and a chrome-steel forging. The time of service was as follows: plain carbon steel, 4 mo.; nickel steel, 6 mo.; chrome-vanadium steel, over 2 yr.; chrome steel, 4 mo. When these containers were cut open and the cross-section surface polished, they showed an inside zone with a different luster from the rest of the metal. Upon etching, this zone was almost unaffected while the rest of the steel etched normally.

"Two practical methods for correlating two or more diamond-drill core intersections, using a stereographic projection software are presented. The first may be used to establish if two or more vein intersections are correlative, based on their core angles and diamond-drillhole attitudes. The second method allows prediction of main vein attitudes from numerous intersections, based on a spherical density contouring projection. The methods are suitable for: (1) correlating veins in complex orebodies; (2) ascertaining lateral continuity of ore for reserve estimations; (3) demonstrating the hidden complexity of an orebody; and (4) correlating and interpreting various planar elements.IntroductionModern mineral exploration relies on diamond- drill core data and on the ability of geologists to interpret them. Drill core generally yields unoriented information, unless an expensive orientation device is used. As a consequence, strike and dip of planar elements such as lithological contacts or mineralized veins cannot be determined easily. This is particularly true for blind deposits (covered by thick overburden) and complex orebodies, where field data cannot support drilling interpretations. Such a problem has been addressed previously using two and three diamond drillholes and several solutions were proposed based on trigonometry, and geometric and stereographic projections (Mead, 1921; Wisser, 1932; Fischer, 1941; Stein, 1941; Bucher, 1943; Gilluly, 1944; Addie, 1962; Mills, 1963; Lyons, 1964). However, these solutions are time consuming and not relevant to present day computerized data plots."

THE authors have studied the problem of temper brittleness in steel1 employing an internal friction method. The specimens are in the form of wire, 14 B and S gage (0.064 in diam), 6 in. long. It was very desirable to have an apparatus to test the wire specimens for temper brittleness without making standard notched-bar Izod or Charpy impact tests. Such a device would have two favorable advantages: the first is that no standard impact specimen would be necessary, thus saving time and labor; the second is that there would be a direct correlation with internal friction results, thus eliminating the size factor if standard impact specimens had to be used. A search was made without result to find a commercial apparatus for this purpose. The literature was surveyed to investigate if such a test had been utilized. Exploration requires a lot of skill, technical knowhow, and money; the money is usually less painfully available when provided by a profitable cash flow of an existing organisation that has income against which exploration cost is deductible. Planning the financing for development of a proven resource should begin at the earliest stages even while the mining plan is being formed up. The character of the participants has a bearing on the nature of the financing "package" and the structure that is to be selected for the venture. The security for borrowers in a remote mining resource is no better than the capacity of the participants to bring that resource to profitability in line with the findings of a thorough feasibility study. Taxation considerations related to the structure selected and the timing of the cash flow are of vital importance. Sales contracts have generally been a basic requirement of institutions financing mineral mining projects. Clauses relating to price, price escalation, and currency var- iations, are key factors in those contracts. Initial contracts have generally been required to cover initial overall costs.

The Nokomai Gold Mining Project commenced production in January 1992. The Project continues a history of mining in theNokomai Valley which extended from 1863 to 1942. L & M Mining Limited have held interests in the valley since 1980. In 1990 the Nokomai Joint Venture was formed with the Hore family, the owners of Nokomai Station, to mine a large alluvial gold resource in the valley. The mine is located adjacent to the Mataura Brown Trout fishery and required extensive environmental studies prior to granting of permits. The mine is budgeted to work for 20 months, processing 460 000 m3 of wash material. During this period, contract miners, Downer Mining Limited, will move in excess of seven million cubic metres of overburden from the deposit.

Assessment of metal mobility, acid rock drainage production, and toxic effects from weathering of mineralised materials (ie mine-waste piles and outcropping alteration/ore zones) is key in evaluating and mitigating metal mining sites. Many metal- and acid-generating materials at these sites are sulfur minerals (sulfides to sulfates) with differing reactivities, weathering characteristics and metal contents. Our working hypothesis predicts that data on the types and quantities of sulfur minerals, coupled with comparison of their sulfur isotopic compositions to that of aqueous sulfate in the surrounding environment, can be used to evaluate primary pathways of weathering reactions at mining sites. We developed a sequential extraction scheme to separate the phases of sulfur in mineralised materials. Operationally defined phases, including monosulfides, disulfides, elemental sulfur, water-soluble sulfo-salts, acid-soluble sulfates, and resistant sulfate phases such as barite, are quantified gravimetrically and/or instrumentally. Several sets of experiments were designed to test the effectiveness of this extraction scheme. First, a variety of ore sulfides diluted in an inert matrix was analysed with the scheme. Results showed that molybdenite and arsenic-bearing sulfides do not behave as predicted from just their sulfur oxidation states, indicating that samples containing these minerals need special treatment for complete phase recovery. Second, a natural mine-waste composite standard was analysed by the scheme. The sum of the phases was equal to the total sulfur concentration analysed independently. Each phase had a similar, but distinct sulfur isotopic composition. The results were verified with a laboratory prepared æproxyÆ having the same mineralogical composition as the standard, but with each phase having a very different sulfur isotopic composition. The sulfur isotopic compositions of the recovered phases from the æproxyÆ showed that the scheme effectively separated the sulfur with only minor cross contamination of phases. The speciation and isotopic analyses were applied to both mine-waste piles and naturally occurring alteration zones at nine mine sites. A case study from one site comparing the sulfur isotopic composition of minerals in an alteration zone and dissolved sulfate in proximal streams is presented. This case study shows the application of our data to differentiating sources of sulfate in the surrounding environment.

Na operação da Anglo American localizada em Barro Alto, utiliza-se 2 (dois) Fornos Rotativos no processo de fabricação de ferroníquel. Esses fornos possuem 6,2m de diâmetro e 185m de comprimento, no qual é necessário o monitoramento de temperatura (20) e vazão (4) ao longo do forno. Originalmente essas medições eram realizadas através de 2 PLC’s embarcados nos fornos, no qual recebiam as medições via cabos em bandejamentos. Esses PLC’s se comunicavam via rádio modem com os PLC’s principais dos Fornos. Durante a operação encontramos diversas dificuldades de manutenção e confiabilidade, já que os fornos operam em regime de 24h por dia e 7 dias por semana. Por várias vezes alguns cabos se danificavam devida a alta temperatura dos fornos, as bandejas que se desprendiam, falhas de cartões dos PLC’s, etc. Com isso as medições eram interrompidas. Para solucionar esse problema, foi desenvolvido um sistema de Instrumentação Wireless. Esse sistema basicamente é a instalação de instrumentos com a tecnologia WirelessHart no qual os instrumentos não possuem alimentação por cabos e sim por baterias e a comunicação é feita via sinal wireless. Esses instrumentos apresentam alta confiabilidade nas medições no qual foi possível retirar toda a infraestrutura antiga e garantir continuidade/confiabilidade nas medições.

The trend in underground room-and-pillar coal mining is to employ remote-controlled, continuous-mining machines and extended cuts to depths of 12 m (40 ft) or more. This system of coal extraction, adopted by more than 435 mines, can create additional worker safety hazards. To address the ground-control-related safety hazards, a combination of statistical analysis and numerical modeling was used. Initially, the reported roof-fall incidents and fatalities were reviewed to delineate the ground-control hazards. Then, the application of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) for estimating safe extended-cut depths was evaluated. Finally, computer modeling was completed to predict roof displacements during extended-cut mining. This paper describes the results of these studies and their impacts on the safety of extended-cut mining.

This work presents a first-order analysis of the instability underlying viscous fingering in adverse viscosity-ratio water floods. It extends previous analyses of frontal instabilities, which were carried out with equations for parallel plate models, by including effects of the saturation transition zone observed behind the front in water floods in water wet systems. This zone tends to insulate incipient fingers from the high-mobility watet;. thus conditions for the onset of fingering differ from those in the parallel plate theory. Finite-difference solutions of the two-dimensional equations of displacement in porous media exhibited the predicted stability characteristics in six hypothetical field- and laboratory-scale floods in rectangular reservoirs. In contrast to results with parallel plate systems, this paper concludes that for waterwet reservoirs, laboratory models scaled by the usual criteria are also correctly scaled for frontal instability. Further, fingering in the systems studied can occur in any saturation range behind the front, and may occur at an intermediate saturation even though stability obtains both at the saturation corresponding to the Buckley-Leverett front and near residual oil saturation. Other points of contrast are that the likelihood of occurrence of fingering may not increase as flow rate or viscosity difference increases, but my be sensitive to changes in he relative permealdlity and capillary pressure functions. INTRODUCTION The recovery of oil by water flooding frequently involves displacing the oil by water of a lower viscosity. Displacement of a fluid by a less viscous one may lead to gross channeling or fingering like that observed in solvent floods, in which it severely lowers recovery efficiency.1 In addition to adverse effects on recovery, it has been suggested that the unstable move- ment causing fingering may interfere with interpretation of scaled model studies of proposed water floods, since the instability in the model might not be faithfully scaled to that in the reservoir prototype. In view of the serious implications of this possible breakdown of widely used scaled model techniques4-6 it is the purpose of this paper to examine the question further. Instabilities in the solutions of systems of differential equations imply a loss of smooth dependence on initial and boundary conditions. Thus, the possibility exists that in using models whose scaling is based on the differential system there may arise size- and rate-dependent factors which are not properly scaled. This possibility was examined in detail by Chouke et al., who analyzed the instability of frontal advance in a related problem, water-oil displacement in parallel plate models,2 in which a moving interface separates two regions of constant, unequal mobilities. First-order perturbation theory predicts the existence of a critical wave length for the growth of perturbations: and a wave length of maximum instability of A, = The interpretation is that wave lengths in a perturbation which are longer than A, will grow. For decades, open-pit mine planning algorithms have incorporated geological uncertainty and other elements or characteristics for increasingly realistic representations. Among these complexities is the detailing of downstream processes that occur inside processing plants. Previous studies have demonstrated that the strategic mine plan and mineral concentrator design are coupled, and should therefore be optimized simultaneously within the same quantitative framework. However, existing frameworks offer limited representation of operational modes. This work demonstrates an approach to resolving this gap, in an optimization based on a parallelized Variable Neighborhood Descent (VND). The resulting algorithm embeds mass-balancing linear programming (LP) using a DantzigWolfe decomposition. A case study of a Zn-Pb deposit is presented to show the performance reached.

Cemented Paste Backfill has proven to be of critical importance to the operation of a number of Canadian mines, primarily due to the rapid backfilling rate this method permits. In order to improve the efficiency of this backfill system (i.e. optimize binder contents, fill fence design, and the employment of two stage filling strategies) there is a requirement to better understand its geomechanical behaviour. In response, in-situ experiments have been conducted in long-hole stopes to quantify the evolution of total earth pressures and pore pressures at a series of instrumented points within both the core of the backfill and close to fill fences. The deflection of fill fences as a result of paste loading has been measured and additional instrumentation has also been employed to measure cement hydration, negative pore pressures, and blasting induced vibrations within fresh and cured paste backfill. Installing geotechnical instrumentation within an open long-hole stope can be an extremely complex procedure and this paper details the methods that have been successfully employed. Preliminary results are presented, and the pressures induced by backfill with differing binder contents, at a number of different in-stope locations are considered.

During 1938, Colombia witnessed greater activity in oil prospecting and development than in any previous year in its history; more wells were drilled, more potential production established, more geological and geophysical work was accomplished, and more leases and concessions were acquired. Many companies, including the Texas, Socony Vacuum, Richmond (subsidiary of the Standard Oil of California), the Shell, and Tropical, contributed to this activity. Probably the most noteworthy development was in connection with the Barco Concession, which forms part of the Maracaibo Basin in eastern Colombia, adjacent to the Venezuelan frontier. There a great deal of preparatory work was accomplished in addition to camp and other construction, 20 producing wells were drilled and work was begun on the construction of a 12-in. pipe line to transport the oil to the port of Covenas, a distance of 260 miles. It is reported {hat 58,000 bbl. daily initial production was established during the year and is awaiting an outlet through this pipe line. Leasing and exploratory operations in Colombia continued active throughout the year; applications were made for concessions covering more than 1,100,000 acres of national lands and, in addition, leases were taken up on large areas of privately owned lands. Current world conditions are forcing the search for "green" energy technology in every aspect of our daily lives. Finding alternatives to petroleum fuels seems to be at the top of the list. The search for the "perfect" alternative is something like the never ending quest of the perpetual motion machine. Unfortunately, the laws of physics prevent us from getting something for nothing, and Murphy's Law normally gives us nothing for a lot of something. Regardless of Murphy, the quest goes on, and in our industry cheaper ANFO seems to be the popular subject.

This paper provides a brief historical review of the invention of the spiral separator and its adoption into Australian metallurgical practice. The purpose of the review is to demonstrate that spiral development to date appears to have been a largely empirical process, and that the cur- rent resurgence of interest in the spiral, especially in the coal industry, warrants an increased fundamental research effort. Current research work concentrating on empirical modelling is outlined, while some preliminary experimental results of a more fundamental nature are presented and some research of other disciplines interested in particle transport introduced in order to stimulate further work and discussion.
