The Flat Gap mine is located on Copper Ridge in the Appalachian Valley of East Tennessee. Large zinc orebodies occupy zones of solution and collapse breccias in Lower Ordovician Kingsport limestone and dolomite. The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue is dolomite. The ore-bearing horizons are considerably more than 95% covered by thick residual clay. Geochemical prospecting under these conditions is an effective exploration technique which played an important role in the discovery and exploration of the Flat Gap mine. The Flat Gap mine, an important zinc deposit of the Appalachian type, is located in the Copper Ridge Belt in the Valley of Tennessee approximately 30 miles northeast of the Mascot-Jefferson City zinc district (Fig. 1). The ore is found in large stratigraphically linked deposits in solution and collapse breccias of the Kingsport, Longview and, to a minor extent, Mascot formations of Lower Ordovician age. The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue minerals are dolcrmite and accessory pyrite. There is local minor galena and very rare barite and fluorite. The ore-bearing horizons are covered by about 20 to 100 ft or more of residual clay except where active streams have exposed bedrock. Considerably less than 5% of the favorable host rocks are exposed in outcrop, and this nearly complete soil cover creates a serious obstacle to exploration. Comprehensive surveys of the base metal content of soils furnish a useful substitute for outcrop geology, and under favorable conditions, this technique is a very valuable prospecting tool. INTRODUCTION The design criteria for a particular concentration and dewatering project will provide the formal basis for design of the process, equipment and facilities. These criteria will specify the required capacities and operating schedules for the equipment, as well as the quantity and quality of the feed to be processed and products obtained. The general climatic and geographical conditions at the site, specific information on soil or rock conditions; and applicable design standards and codes will also be included. The design criteria will generally be based on an interpretation of testwork carried out on the particular ore and site, and will thus parallel in detail and completeness this testwork. As the project moves from the early conceptual phases through to final detailed design, the design criteria will be developed and become more detailed as information is generated and made available for use. The design criteria are critical to the design effort as the formal specification to the designer of what and how much is to be processed, what and how much is to be produced, and where and under what conditions. The actual design criteria will be a formal tabulation of the design basis information developed for the project in question. For a preliminary study, this may consist of a single page of data; for a feasibility study several pages and for a detailed design up to several hundred pages and multiple volumes. Depending on the complexity of the process and the level of detail included, each project will be unique to some degree. The design process for a project normally progresses from preliminary conceptual phases through to a final detailed design. The criteria used for the initial concepts are generally developed from rough data and preliminary testwork on the ore in question. Regardless, the plant throughput and products are defined, thus giving a scope and definition to the study phase. In some studies a range of throughputs may be analyzed in order to arrive at the most economically attractive size for the proposed operation. This optimum size is then used as the design throughput for the more detailed design phases. Similarly as more testwork results are available and the ore characteristics and process become more well defined a continuous updating of the design criteria is undertaken.

Este artigo descreve a utilização da proteção cerâmica do composto SiO2(62-68)-MgO+CaO(29-39) na região frontal das máquinas que injetam massa refratária para interromper corridas de ferro gusa e escória em estado líquido nos altos fornos. O novo modelo de proteção (protótipo) apresentou uma economia de aproximadamente R$ 32 mil reais comparado com o composto anteriormente utilizado CaO-Al2O3-SiO2. Apresentou também menor toxidade, já que possui em sua morfologia menor quantidade de fibras. Estas fibras quando inaladas provocam danos aos tecidos internos dos pulmões sendo prejudicial à saúde. Houve manutenção dos índices de produção, pois em todas as amostras da nova proteção cerâmica testada, a parte frontal foi preservada possibilitando a injeção de massa refratária na quantidade e pressão necessárias para reconstituição do comprimento do furo que retira o ferro e escória do interior do alto forno, possibilitando um volume interno maior para se produzir mais. Os modelos de proteção usados nos testes foram da empresa Morganite. A verificação da morfologia e posterior caracterização do material foram executadas por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura e Difração de Raios-X.

Reference is made to the approach to mine cooling in which the service water is used as one of the means of distributing refrigeration, and attention is drawn to various engineering disciplines or functions necessary for effective distribution and reticulation of cold water from refrigeration plant. The demand for service water is intermittent, the peak flow-rates being typically two to three times the average flowrate. The refrigeration plant, on the other hand, must preferably be operated steadily throughout the day and night, with the result that a large storage dam for cold water must be incorporated into each system in order to even out the surge in demand for water. These dams should be operated as constant-temperature, variable-volume reservoirs. The conventional cascade system involving dams on each level is not the best for sending water down mines, and schemes are described that avoid the need for such dams. Reference is made to various tests that were carried out, and to several large systems that were installed. Management and organizational problems that could arise as a result of new technological developments in mine cooling are referred to, and cost figures are quoted to indicate the large potential savings, In addition to the improved environmental conditions, that can be achieved through the use of integrated water systems.

Fires in mines are so serious in their consequences and of such frequent occurrence, that their causes and the means of extinguishing them are certainly questions of the greatest interest to a large part of the engineering profession. We have already, in this country, many mines which have been burning for years, and though our hard anthracite is so difficult to ignite that for a quarter of a century after it was first discovered it mas not known how to burn it except with the aid of an artificial blast, yet most of the fires which have occurred underground have been in anthracite mines, and in the coal itself. The injury which these fires have caused to properties in various parts of the anthracite regions, and the cost of extinguishing them, would amount to many millions of dollars, and they have also occasioned the loss of many valuable lives. It is not surprising, therefore, that the subject has already attracted much attention, and the exercise of great ingenuity; and the present communication is made less with the expectation of announcing anything new, than with the object of putting upon record the present state of our knowledge on this subject, or, in other words, of indicating how defective are the present means of combating underground conflagrations. Causes of Mine Fires.—Even upon the surface, fire is a terrible foe to contend with, and there is probably no other which inspires such thorough and well-founded alarm. With what feelings, then, must we look upon this destructive element, when its field is in the narrow galleries of a mine, where the poisonous products of combustion, spreading in every direction, protect, in the most effectual manner, the fire itself from the attacks of extinguishers, while, if the face of attack be ventilated so as to enable then] to approach the seat of the fire, the air current simply increases the extent and violence of the conflagration. Fires underground originate in as various ways as those on the surface, and it is scarcely necessary to say that, except in the rare cases where they are the result of design, they are invariably classed as " accidents," and most generally as " unavoidable accidents." The Midas epithermal system is one of the larger low-sulfidation epithermal vein systems discovered in the western US in recent years, containing in excess of 3 Moz of gold (premining). The deposit is spatially and temporally related to bimodal volcanism in the Northern Nevada Rift; dates on igneous rocks (16 - 14.7 Ma) bracket the age of high grade veins (15.3 Ma). Hydrothermal alteration at Midas is typical of epithermal systems, comprising proximal potassic through distal propylitic assemblages; in contrast to many epithermal systems, Midas has minimal development of wallrock illite/sericite. Mineral assemblages are clearly zoned on the vein structures that acted as focal planes for fluid upflow. Geochemical zoning patterns also show this zoning. Metals were deposited in open-space veins as the result of boiling of hydrothermal fluids; multiple episodes of crustiform mineral deposition are documented in the vein textures. The major vein minerals include quartz, adularia, calcite, selenides and sulfides, with electrum as the primary ore mineral. REE patterns for vein material are similar to patterns for coeval rhyolites, but distinctly different from patterns of the host rocks. Stable isotope data are consistent with meteoric water as the dominant ore fluid. Combined REE and stable isotope data suggest that fluid from which the main ore-bearing stage of the veins was deposited was slightly lower pH than other stages.

An accurate, efficient and stable computation of the mill matrix function (eAt) is needed where mill matrix (A) is a real general matrix. Two important modeling cases in comminution where such need arises are: Heterogeneous comminution behavior of multi-component ores and ultra-fine grinding involving simultaneous attrition and fragmentation breakages. This paper presents the application of a novel splitting method in conjunction With similarity transformation technique in the form of "product formula" which is found to work in all cases and uses a most aggravating, yet interesting property of the matrix exponential in a restricted sense. Results are presented showing that this method can yield solution as accurate as those obtained With an analytical technique. The utility of this computational approach is demonstrated by parameter estimation analysis using a distributed component model in the liberation area through computer simulations.

The interfaces between the Broken Hill ore lenses and the enclosing wallrocks are, on a broad scale, parallel to metamorphic layering in the wallrock gneisses and quartzites. In detail, however, the concordant contacts are interrupted by piercement structures, formed by plastic injection of ore into the wallrocks during metamorphism.These discordant bodies vary from minor projections measuring less than I m long, to major ore shoots ("droppers") as much as 60 m long. The intrusive bodies consist of fragmented ore and wallrock in amatrix of recrystallised sulphides. Wallrock fragments have been altered to manganese-rich and calcium-rich mineral assemblages. The injected ore is enriched in sulphides compared with the parent ore, and there has been enrichment in a number of minor elements.Piercement structures formed during the waning phase of high grade metamorphism, when incompetent ore was injected plastically under pressure into the wallrocks, particularly at fold crests. Adjacent to the "droppers", retrograde schists developed as a result of shearing along the ore-wallrock interface.

The general properties of diffusion in GaAs are reviewed. A total of .fourteen atoms have been studied to date, and activation energies for eleven reported are (in ev): Ga (5.6), As (lo), Zn (2.49), Cd (2.43), Sn (2.5). Mn (2.75). S (4.0). Se (4.2). Ag (0.33), Cu (0.52). and Li (1.0). The dijfusion of the first eight atoms, as measured by Goldstein using radiotracer techniques, established the principle of sub lattice diffusion for both host and impurity atoms, since atoms substituting for gallium have lower activation energies than those substituting for arsenic. The diffusion constant of interstitial copper has been determined for the first time by Hall and Racette using heavily doped p-type samples in which interstitial copper predominates. The anomalous behavior of zinc, which has an abrupt diffusion front and a strong dependence on zinc concentration, has recently been quantitatively explained in terms of an interstitial-substi-tutional equilibrium-diffusion mechanism. Lithium and silver diffuse mainly interstitially, while the diffusion of phosphorus is complicated by the continual formation ofGap. Junction-migration measurements indicate diiferent results than radiotracer techniques, and this is one problem that still remains, together with discrepancies in cadmium-diffusion results, and an unexplained dependence of impurity diffusion on arsenic pressure. BESIDES the usual insights into the behavior of atoms in solids, studies of diffusion in semiconductors have additional importance for device applications. In fact, the amount of diffusion studies performed on a semiconductor might serve as a simple barometer of its technological importance. Thus, the information accumulated for GaAs is not yet quite comparable to that for germanium or silicon, but considerable knowledge is available. The diffusion of at least fourteen atoms has been investigated for GaAs, and the diffusion constants have been determined for eleven of these. Interesting results were found for GaAs that elucidated problems not previously solved for germanium or silicon. For example, the interstitial-diffusion constant for the very fast diffusant, copper, was first measured in GaAs. Also, solutions for interstitial-substitu-tional equilibrium diffusion in extrinsic material were provided first for GaAs, although they are ap- plicable to germanium, silicon, and other semiconductors. Studies in GaAs firmly established the concept of sublattice diffusion, which should have application in many different compound systems. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly the general state of knowledge concerning diffusion in GaAs. First some general aspects of diffusion will be covered, and next attention will be given to the results mentioned above. Diffusion in GaAs has been measured both by radiotracer and junction-penetration techniques, and some discussion will be given of differences in the two sets of results. The comprehensive work of oldsteinl-' has served as the primary reference for the diffusion of well-behaved substitutional atoms in GaAs. Since a review has recently been presented of many of these reults, details of the diffusion data will not be repeated. Neither will any discussion be given of the experimental techniques of diffusion measurements, except to note here, in passing, the simplicity and effectiveness of the precision lapping device employed by Goldstein.' I) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A) Summary of Experimental Results. Diffusion constants D = Do exp(E/kT) have been determined for eleven atoms in GaAs: a,' AS,' n,'" Cd,'" n,' n,8 s, e,' Ag,O CU," and i." These results are summarized in Table I. In addition, diffusion was investigated for phosphorus,4'12 germanium,I3 and ilicon,' but Do and E were not determined. Radiotracer techniques were used for most of the studies except for lithium, where a combination of chemical and electrical techniques was employed, and germanium and silicon, where junction-migration techniques were applied. Discussion of the paper of Robert R. Abbott, presented at the New York Meeting, October, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 82, October, 1913, pp. 2389 to 2400. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.:-Mr. Abbott has certainly made a strenuous effort to ascertain the influence of the various elements on the absorption of carbon by steel-a subject of great importance to those dealing with the case hardening of that metal. Because of the extensive and careful character of Mr. Abbott's experiments, one is all the more disappointed that his results, as he himself recognizes, are not more satisfactory; for, indeed they leave us just about where we were,-still entertaining uncertain views in regard to the carbon-absorbing power of various alloy steels. It might be asked whether Mr. Abbott's method of estimating the amount of carbon absorbed-namely, by weighing the specimens before and after the carburizing treatment-was the best one to select. Are not serious sources of error. inherent to such procedure because of the difficulty of satisfactorily removing the earburizing material attached to the specimen ? The method of least squares has certainly failed to solve the problem satisfactorily. By manipulating Mr. Abbott's results in a different manner I have obtained the following expression: P = 100 - 50 C - 7 Ni + 20 Cr, in which P represents the carbon-absorbing power; C, the percentage of carbon; Ni, that of nickel; and Cr, that of chromium. It is assumed that the carbon-absorbing power of pure iron, or what might be called its carburizability, is represented by 100. Applying the formula, for instance, to a steel containing 0.15 per cent. C, 3 per cent. nickel, and 0.50 per cent. chromium, its carbon-absorbing power would be 100-50X0.15-7X3+20X0.50=81.50; that is, 81.50 per cent. of the carbon-absorbing power of pure iron.

As the mining sector increasingly embraces the sustainability agenda, and implements thorough environmental reporting in support of its case for a continued æsocial licence to operateÆ, there is a need for ever-clearer metrics for key areas of impact. It is clear that natural waters are both the predominant pathway and main recipient of the environmental impacts of mining. A new approach to summarising the impacts of mining operations on water quantity and quality is proposed, adapted from an existing generic framework, which is increasingly used to quantify the æwater footprintsÆ of cities and nations. This includes both direct water use and ævirtual waterÆ use, implicit in goods and services used by the mine. In contrast to the existing formulation of æwater footprintÆ, it is here argued that it makes hydrological sense to express the water footprints of mines in areal terms, as equivalent catchment areas. It is also important in the mining sector to capture systematic changes in the scale of impact, which can be anticipated and predictively quantified over the full life cycle. This includes the essentially infinite post-closure phase, during which æremanent water consumptionÆ occurs, either through physical water loss (eg by evaporation from pit lakes) or by ongoing contamination of sizeable flows of natural waters. Methods for assessing the water footprints of mines are now available, and the time is increasingly ripe for them to be applied in earnest in environmental reporting. An example application to a mine in a humid subtropical area of South America is presented. In that case, the mine site itself extended over 106 ha, whereas the maximum water footprint exceeded this by a factor of 27. Although the water footprint can be expected to decline by a factor of ten immediately after closure, sustained evaporation from pit lakes and tailings dams with water covers will gradually increase the remanent water consumption rate, such that the final post-closure water footprint remains about 25 per cent of that encountered during the peak of mining.

U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers reviewed an in situ stress estimate developed from measurements of overcore strain taken at test sites on the 7300 and 7500 levels of the Star Mine near Mullan, ID. Although the field measurements of overcoring strain were found to be useful, significant deficiencies were found in the stress estimation procedure. A new stress estimate was developed incorporating statistical methods and an improved understanding of stress concentration factors for interpreting overcore strains recorded by doorstopper cells. Spatial variability of overcore strains and the implications for stress field variability were explored.

Many of the majors are replacing and adding to their reserves and resources through acquisitions. This situation has allowed junior mining and exploration companies to do what they do best. They have been re-examining once uneconomic gold, copper and other metals properties with an eye to partnering with a major to develop them. And mines that have been closed for years due to poor economics are being given another look.

Though the importance of the engineering rock mass properties such as deformation modulus, cohesion and friction angle is emphasized, the researches on the reliability of these values are rarely performed. By using modified Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy inference system, a fuzzy model was developed based on the data obtained from domestic tunnel construction sites, and the ability of prediction was compared with the empirical equations conveniently used for estimating these values, which finds that fuzzy model is better than empirical equation. Sufficiently large database, however, is required for training the fuzzy model for more accurate prediction. Obwohl die Wichtigkeit der technischen Eigentümer der Felsenmassen wie zum Beispiel Verformungsmodulus, Bindekraft und Reibungswinkel betont werden, wird die Forschung auf der Zuverläßigkeit dieser Werte selten durchgeführt. Mit modifiziertem Takagi Sugenos (TS) Flaumigenschlußsystem wird die Flaumigenmodelle von den Daten, die von inländischen Tunnelbaustellen erhalten werden, entwickelt. Zum Schätzen dieser Werte ist es viel günstig, Flaumigenmodell zu benutzen, als zu adoptieren die empirische Gleichung für die Fähigkeit der Voraussage. Genügende große Datenbank wird aber zum Ausbilden flaumigen Modells für genauere Voraussage erfordert. Quoique l'importance sur la caractéristique d'ingénierie de la masse de roche comme le module de déformation, la cohésion et l'angle de friction, soit soulignée, la recherche sur la confiance de ces valeurs est rarement effectuée. Avec le système modifié de Takagi-Sugeno(TS) fuzzy inférence, le nouveau modèle fuzzy s'est développé. The remarks that follow are based substan¬tially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which have been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more-difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in intermediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1 ½ . The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present.

The impact of several electrolytes present in seawater on the rheological properties of flocculated mineral suspensions was assessed using the creep test. Flocculated suspensions were obtained by adding polymer flocculant to a cylinder of mineral suspension and aggregating the suspension using the plunger method. The suspension was allowed to sediment and the supernatant liquid decanted prior to tests for the viscoelastic properties of the resulting sediment. The solid used was alumina AKP-30 both, below and above the isoelectric point. The polymer used was AN934SH, an anionic flocculant with high molecular weight. Salts analyzed were MgCl2, CaCl2 and NaCl, known as water structure makers, and KI and KCl, known as water structure breakers. A high salt concentration of 0.5 M was used to approach the ionic strength of seawater. For both pH’s studied, the sediments demonstrated a viscoelastic non-linear behavior observed as a non-linear relationship between yield strain and applied stress. In the absence of flocculant, it was observed that the viscosity and yield stress of a suspension increase in the presence of structure maker salts for the case of both silica suspensions and alumina suspensions. These results were explained using hypernetted chain statistical mechanics models describing the interaction of ions with solvated surfaces. In contrast, with the presence of flocculant, the shear yield strain of alumina suspensions increases with the breaker character of the salts, however, this result has been explained by an extension of the results from the models. The work has significant implications for the flocculation of mineral suspensions in the presence of seawater.
