The use of a pneumatic process for removing fine material (usually less than 48-mesh) is increasing in the preparation of stoker-size coal. The fine material, produced as a byproduct, is known as dedusting-plant dust. Since fusain is the most friable ingredient in bituminous coal (it may readily be rubbed to an impalpable powder with the fingers), it tends to accumulate in this byproduct. While studying the properties of cokes produced by blending Illinois coals with other materials, considerable quantities of fusain were required. Dedusting-plant dust suggested itself as a convenient supply. It became necessary, therefore, to determine how much fusain was contained in a measured sample of dust, how the fusain was distributed with respect to size and specific gravity in the sample, and whether or not it would be feasible or desirable further to concentrate or to recover the fusain from the dust before using it in the blends to be coked. The results obtained indicate the possibilities of production of a high-fusain material. Previous Work Lehmann and Stach have developed a processl,2 for separation of banded bituminous coals into their band ingredients by impact pulverization followed by screening or air separation. They found, as might be expected, that the fusain was concentrated in the very fine material. Prockat and Raute3 examined samples from dedusting plants operating in the Ruhr. They separated the dust into various screen sizes and determined the composition of each of these sizes in terms of the banded ingredients of the original coal. In the dusts examined by them, the finest material was always high in fusain, and most of the fusain contained in the original samples could be recovered from this fraction.

Among other types of sustainability indicators, linguistic variables have been proposed. During the past few years considerable effort for using the fuzzy logic and linguistic variables (LVs) in environmental decision-making for the mineral industry has been made. The linguistic variables defined could, among others properties, describe the property of acceptability for environment for various environmental indicators. Some proposals for construction of such variables are based on administrative decisions from environmental impact assessment procedures for mining, which provide information for acceptability of quality kind for environment (e.g. obtained from public participation, experts, environmental administration). The measures of evidence for construction have to be based on sets (not only on the members of sets). The administrative decisions with their statements and explanations could be considered as such sets. The measures of evidence appropriate are plausibility and belief measures. Using the more elaborated methods from the theory of evidence, the better estimation of those measures could be achieved. The methods of constructing the linguistic variables, previously suggested and based on obtained measures, are also discussed.

"Underground mine fires can significantly influence mine ventilation airstreams, in some cases throttling or even reversing airflows. As a result, the performance of a metal and nonmetal mine stench fire warning system, which depends on the ventilation to carry the vital warning signal, under fire conditions is different from performance under nonfire conditions. The safety of underground miners can be jeopardized if the warning signal is delayed. This Bureau of Mines report describes research to investigate fire and stench warning system interactions. A computer model is presented that permits quantitative analysis of stench warning signal delays as a function of fire location and intensity. The results of a case study involving computer simulations of stench distribution in a hypothetical mine network subject to various fire exposures are also discussed. This case study illustrates a technique for identifying the areas within a mine that are subject to unacceptable warning signal delays, thereby enabling preemptive action by mine personnel, such as redeployment of stench injectors. INTRODUCTIONFires are an ever-present threat to the safety of underground miners. Since the smoke and toxic gas produced by a mine fire can be spread rapidly by the mine's ventilation system, mine evacuation must be accomplished as quickly as possible in the event of fire. In metal and nonmetal mines, the most common means of passing the fire warning signal to each miner is the stench system. The typical stench system utilizes ethyl mercaptan, a highly odoriferous organic compound, injected on the surface into the compressed and/or ventilation airstreams. Upon smelling the stench, workers evacuate the mine according to an emergency preplan.Although the stench system has been used successfully for over 60 yr, it has several serious shortcomings, owing to certain chemical properties of ethyl mercaptan and to certain performance characteristics and limitations of present injection systems.Recent Bureau research succeeded in upgrading the overall safety and effectiveness of the stench system through the use of a superior stench odorant and the development of improved stench injection equipment (1).4 This research has also investigated a specialized computer simulation model capable of calculating the precise concentration of stench in any mine ventilation network branch at any time after stench release (2). An adaptation of the computer model now enables the analysis of stench system and ventilation system interactions under the influence of a mine fire."

The Apex property, mined in the early Twentieth Century for direct shipping copper, also contains gallium and germanium in iron oxide minerals. In 1982, Musto Explorations Limited began an exploration program to define reserves. A metallurgical process was developed, and a production decision was reached in late 1983. This text describes the process development and design. The Apex mine, located near St. George in Southwestern Utah is owned by St. George Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Musto Explorations of Vancouver, B.C. Musto acquired the property in early 1982. A pilot plant was operated by Hazen Research, Inc., Golden, CO later in 1982. In late 1983 sufficient information had been developed for St. George to proceed with the project. The final process design was prepared by G. M. Swinkels of Vancouver, consultant to Musto, and Hazen Research. Process engineering was done by Hazen Research, and St. George acted as its own contractor. Commissioning of the plant began in October 1985.

"During the past several months, I have introduced to civil and structural engineers an innovative solution for the integrity testing of concrete using the Thermal Integrity Profiler (TIP) Wire Cable System by Pile Dynamics. While in the process of “educating” highly-trained professionals about a technological breakthrough, I ended up being educated myself about their needs for quality control/quality assurance (QA/QC). With that in mind, I would like to focus on their two key areas of concern:• How complex is the TIP installation process?• How does the QA/QC engineereffectively analyze and report TIP test results?A few months ago, during a discussion with a senior QA engineer, he asked a question that stopped me in my tracks: “Why should we do foundation testing at all?” Turning it around, I asked, “Why wouldn’t QA/QC personnel want to know everything they could about their critical infrastructure foundation?” Honestly, I didn’t answer his question nor did I fully comprehend what he was trying to say. With his experience, the engineer understood that there has not been an integrity test or a combination of integrity tests that could deliver an inside the cage and outside the cage (cover) complete data set that would provide a definitive profile of the entire shaft. Crosshole sonic logging (CSL) becomes more effective the larger the diameter of the shaft becomes, with a maximum effectiveness between 70% and 80%, but does not provide any data of the integrity of the shaft beyond a straight line between CSL tubes. Gamma-gamma logging (GGL) provides qualitative information about the concrete surrounding the GGL tube and device, and it provides information about a small percentage of the drilled shaft concrete near its outside edge."

Highly pure pig irons were produced in a multimode microwave reactor from powdered iron ores with carbon as a reducing agent in the nitrogen atmosphere. The grains in compacted powder absorb microwave energy selectively. Microwave-matter interaction creates thermal non-equilibrium state microscopically and enhances chemical reactions and the phase mixing at the grain boundaries very rapidly. The visible light spectroscopic techniques was used to monitor the progress of the reactions. Up to 650°C, the heated powders radiate the continuous spectrum of blackbody emission. The small non-equilibrium hot spots rise, move and finally burst in to brighter light emitting from all over the surface at 650°C. CN molecules and Fe (I) atoms were identified in the recorded spectrum. These bursts are similar to the ?ignition propagation? normally observed in chemical reactions. The line spectra originated from CO molecules have not been detected yet. The solid-solid reaction could be expected between the iron oxides and carbon to produce CO2 directly. A loss in the sample weight was accelerated during the excess-emission. These are the clear evidence that microwaves cause thermally non-equilibrium state and accelerate reduction process. The reduction of iron ore is completed at 1380°C and relatively very pure pig iron was produced. It should be noted that the impurity level of Mg, S, Si, P and Ti is only 5-10% of what is found in the pig irons produced by modern conventional blast furnaces in the steel industries. The necessary amount of carbon needed was 1/2 compared to conventional blast furnace to produce the unit weight of steel, if we applied renewable energy or nuclear power for the microwave excitations.

The nickel-chromium alloys form the base for many industrial heating alloys, so that this system is of considerable practical importance. The literature on these alloys, however, contains much conflicting evidence, not only regarding the solubility limits of the terminal solid solutions at different temperatures but even regarding the number of phases existing in the system. Part of the difficulty undoubtedly arises from the fact that chromium of sufficiently high purity has been available only during the last few years. A second and possibly even more important difficulty arises from the ease with which chromium reacts with silicon and carbon compounds and the atmosphere to form silicides, carbides, nitrides and oxides. Pilling and Kihlgrenl in 1929 reviewed the existing scanty information. They did not consider the diagram by which they summarized the various bits of information to be entirely satisfactory. Matsunaga2 investigated the system by thermal analysis, microscopic examination and other means. Electrolytic nickel of 99.9 per cent purity and thermit chromium containing 0.30 per cent Al, 0.40 per cent Fe, 0.25 per cent Si and 0.04 per cent C were used. A Tammann furnace with hydrogen flowing through it was used for melting. Sekito and Matsunaga3 reported an X-ray investigation, presumably on these same alloys, which, as far as can be judged from the abstract, essentially confirmed the thermal and microscopic results. Combination of gravity data and density logs makes it possible to determine the structural relief. Under a wide class of geologic conditions, the solution is unique, or limited to a single parametric system of solutions. As a useful byproduct, the method yields a new way to construct derivative maps, continue the field up or down, subtract regional anomalies, and perform smoothing. In the past, the problem of interpreting gravity anomalies in terms of structural geology was solved along two main lines: 1) A body of a certain shape and density contrast was assumed and the corresponding gravity anomaly calculated, analytically for simple bodies, graphically and/or numerically for more complex ones; then the computed anomaly was compared with the observed one, and the assumed shape corrected according to the differences between the two. 2) The anomaly is assumed to come from a warped interface between two media of different density; the relief of the warping is assumed small compared to the depth of burial, so that the structure can be approximated by a flat horizontal surface of variable density distribution. The first method is a standard technique, described in every text book on applied geophysics, and is well applicable, for bodies with predominant vertical dimension. The second one, probably first used by Tsuboi and Fuchida,' is mathematically more elegant. At Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd., Japan there are three mills, treating a total of 6400 t/d of lead-zinc Ore. In the lead-zinc bulk differential flotation at Shikama Mill the addition of reagents is automatically controlled by the feed rate, the lead and zinc content in feed, froth and tailing, the pH and the concentration of cyanide ion in the pulp. As the zinc thickener overflow at Shikama Mill contains CU(CN)3--, ZnS, CdS, CN-, xanthate and frother, all the ingredients in the over- flow other than CN are floated by using the Nagahm flotation machine, and the water containing only CN- is effectively recycled to the lead- zinc differential flotation circuit. In the lead-zinc straight differential flotation at Mozumi Mill, the overflow of tailing pond is recycled especially to the cleaning flotation circuit by decreasing the pulp density. Thus the integrated recycling of wastewater greatly reduces environmental problem and in addition, it generates sizeable profit.

La lixiviación con tiosulfato de amonio (ATS) puede ser considerada como una alternativa ecológica viable para lixiviar metales preciosos, por comparación con la alta toxicidad del proceso convencional de cianuración, especialmente en el caso de algunos minerales refractarios con presencia de impurezas que provocan baja recuperación de oro y altos consumos de cianuro. En este estudio se evaluó un mineral aurífero asociado a carbón para confirmar los óptimos resultados de la tecnología innovadora ATS, cuyos principales compuestos son amonio tiosulfato, sulfato de amonio, ion cúprico y metabisulfito. De acuerdo con el estudio reseñado en este artículo, la concentración cuprífera a un ratio de 0.5 Kg/Tm proporciona una óptima extracción de oro de 75.20% con 8.60 Kg/Tm de ratio de consumo de tiosulfato (escala de tratamiento: 10,000 Tm en pads de lixiviación a granulometría de 90% <2.5 pulgadas, en 45 días de lixiviación); y extracción de oro de 81.20% con 6.5 Kg/Tm de consumo de tiosulfato en mineral aurífero limpio y de características dóciles (escala de tratamiento: 20,000 Tm en pilas de lixiviación en similares tamaños granulométrico y tiempo de lixiviación). En tanques agitadores, las extracciones de oro son del orden de 90.75% en minerales refractarios (en 120 horas de lixiviación a granulometría de 80% <325 mallas), con ratio de tiosulfato de 7.4 Kg/Tm; y en minerales limpios/dóciles las extracciones de oro alcanzan 93.6% (en 120 horas de tratamiento a granulometría de 80% <325 mallas), con ratio de tiosulfato de 6.3 Kg /Tm. En cambio, la lixiviación convencional con cianuro en este tipo de minerales refractarios no supera al 10% de la recuperación metalúrgica del oro.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government&apos;s role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

Arch of Illinois is a mining complex comprised of two surface and two underground mines located in Perry County, in southern Illinois. The company a division of Apogee Coal Co. of St. Louis, MO. Arch of Illinois&apos; two surface mines, the Captain and Horse Creek Mines, use large stripping shovels and cross-pit bucketwheel excavators to remove overburden from three seams of coal, the Herrin No. 6, Harrisburg No. 5 and Danville No. 7. All are considered high sulfur reserves. The two underground operations are managed by Arch of Illinois. They are the Kathleen Mine and the newly constructed Conant Mine, which began production in 1991. Both underground mines are continuous miner operations. They mine the No. 6 coal, which is about 1.8 m to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) thick. All coal is currently transported by truck to a central preparation plant located at the Captain Mine. This preparation plant produces 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of clean coal. Production in 1992 reached 5.9 Mt (6.5 million st) of saleable coal. Of that, about 66% or 4 Mt (4.4 million st) are produced by the surface mines and the rest the by under ground operations. Change is in the wind for Arch of Illinois. In 1988, 100% of all production (6.2 Mt or 6.9 million st) came from surface operations. By 1995, only 38% of production is scheduled from surface mines. And by the year 2000, 100% of production will from underground mining methods. Dwindling low ratio reserves, compounded by increasing environmental and land acquisition costs, coupled with more efficient underground mining equipment, have started an evolutionary trend toward development of underground reserves. For Arch of Illinois to maintain profitability of remaining surface reserves and to compete effectively mining underground, it must improve efficiency, productivity and cost reductions. These efforts are essential for maximizing current surface reserves and to ensure a continued existence in the presence of clean air legislation and the softening of the high sulfur coal market.

Although descriptions of the methods of analysis of explosives are to be found in many books on explosives, and in works on engineer- ing chemistry or chemical analysis, most of these descriptions are incomplete and lacking in details. The methods of analysis employed in the laboratories of most explosives factories are frequently treated as trade secrets, and very little information is published from such laboratories. This bulletin outlines the methods of analysis that are used by the Bureau of Mines in the examination of certain classes of explo- sives. The present form of most of these methods has been worked out in the bureau's explosives laboratory. The methods employed by Prof. C. E. Munroe were taken as a basis, and were elaborated to meet the demands incident to the treatment of complicated mix- tures and to the development of the explosives art. A subsequent bulletin will discuss the methods of analysis of "permissible" explosives, many of the latter being of decidedly complicated char- acter and requiring special treatment. This bulletin presents the methods of analysis of "ordinary" dynamite, and the ammonia, gelatin, low-freezing, and granular dynamites, and the common grades of black gunpowder and black blasting powder. The bulletin is published by the bureau for the information of all persons inter- ested in explosives and their safe and efficient use in mining work. As the term "ordinary" dynamite, though much used, has no conventional meaning, and may be used to cover a wide variety of compositions of matter, it may be noted that the standard dynamite used at the Pittsburgh testing station is a good example of the "ordinary" dynamite known in this country. Flue gas desulfurization when burning western U.S. coals can be expected to be easier to achieve and less costly than when burning higher sulfur eastern and central coals. However, western coals cannot generally be burned in compliance with federal and state new source emission standards without some degree of control. Western coals and lignite represent about 20% of total U.S. recoverable reserves with 90% of that strip minable, and their production is predicted to increase from the 60 million tons mined in 1973 to 300 million tons in 1985. Most will be used for electric power generation, where low sulfur content is a paramount concern. Western coals are predominantly below 1% sulfur; low compared with typical values of 2 and 3% for eastern and central coals. Coal cleaning for removal of sulfur is not commercially practiced on Western coals, which typically contain half organic and half pyritic sulfur. Intrinsic remediation is the effect of natural attenuation mechanisms - dilution, dispersion, sorption/precipitation and biodegradation - reducing contaminant concentrations in ground water to specified levels at predetermined compliance points in the aquifer. Current monitoring and modeling for post closure was used to assess the current and long-term potential of intrinsic remediation of contaminated seepage originating from a large reactive (sulfidic) tailings impoundment near Questa, New Mexico. It is concluded that the natural attenuation mechanisms of precipitation within the tailings (as a result of buffering) and dilution/dispersion within the aquifer are currently active and likely sufficient to reduce contaminant concentrations to below state standards in the long-term. Other natural attenuation mechanisms such as sorption and biodegradation within the receiving aquife4s) were not assessed here, but are likely further reducing contaminant concentrations. Active interception and recovery of the seepage water is being maintained until monitoring demonstrates that intrinsic remediation has successfully achieved the level of water quality control required.

Este trabalho tem o propósito de avaliar a temperabilidade de um aço SAE 1040 através da utilização do ensaio Jominy e posteriormente promover tratamentos térmicos, gerando nos corpos de prova condições de arrefecimento diferenciadas para avaliar a influência da severidade de têmpera da salmoura e óleo. A curva de ensaio Jominy gerada apresentou um comportamento coerente para um aço com médio teor carbono. Já os tratamentos térmicos que foram realizados posteriormente revelaram que o meio que gera o maior acréscimo nas propriedades mecânicas é o resfriamento em salmoura, haja vista que os corpos de prova submetidos a este resfriamento apresentaram o maior de dureza.
