Or maybe you are one of the hundreds of blasters who have attempted to use GPS as a method for locating the exact position of their blast and measure distances from the blast to nearby structures. If so, you may have found that the accuracy of the handheld GPS systems left much to be desired. It may be time to get the units back out of storage and give them another try. As of midnight, May 1, 2000, the federal government has turned off the “error” built into the system known as “selective availability.” Here is a brief explanation of what that means in a question and answer format.

"Molybdenum mineralization at Boss Mountain is hosted by the Triassic Takomkane quartz monzodiorite batholith and is associated with a Cretaceous monzogranite stock. Ore has been mined from a sheeted vein system that describes a partial annulus centred upon the apical region of the stock and from subvertical breccia pipes that emanate from the stock. Molybdenite precipitation is coincident with CO2 effervescence from a dilute (1.9 mole o/o NaC/ equivalent) hydrothermal fluid over a temperature range of 250°C to 370°C at a pressure of approximately 350 bars, interpreted to be greater than or equal to the lithostatic load and equivalent to a depth of 1.3 km or less.IntroductionThe chemical and thermal constraints on molybdenum transport and deposition to form molybdenum ore deposits are not well understood. To address this problem, the Boss Mountain mine in central British Columbia, operated by Noranda Mines Ltd., was chosen as a well-described (Soregaroli and Nelson, 1976), relatively small and simple example of a Cordilleran Mo~ deposit. It is situated on the northeast slope of Takornkane Mountain, 10 km west of the community of Hendrix Lake (N.T.S. 93A/2W; latitude 52°06'N, longtitude 120°56'W). Access is from 100 Mile House by nearly 90 km of road, the first 50 km of which are paved."

Devido à sua vasta aplicação, o estudo das propriedades mecânicas das superligas de níquel é de grande importância. A superliga 718 possui papel fundamental no funcionamento de grades espaçadoras em reatores nucleares. As grades espaçadoras são oriundas de chapas laminadas, submetidas a tratamentos térmicos de solubilização e de envelhecimento. O objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar a anisotropia das propriedades mecânicas de amostras de 0,3mm de espessura, tratadas termicamente por solubilização e envelhecimento, e testadas por tração uniaxial. Além disso, obteve-se os expoentes de encruamento nas condições estudadas, bem como o índice de anisotropia. Foi possível observar maiores valores de limite de escoamento e de alongamento para as amostras transversais provenientes de ambos tratamentos térmicos, enquanto o limite de resistência apresentou comportamento contrário, sendo os maiores valores oriundos das amostras longitudinais.

SRC rockmass classification have been applied to 25 tunnels in Spain and Italy, for which it was found that much heavier supports than those estimated by the RMR index were required. SRC and RMR indices and other relevant geomechanical data were obtained during the site investigation and construction stages. Data corresponding to in situ stress measurements, analysis of tectonic structures, and instability problems arising during construction were used to asses the state of stress. The relationship between tunnel section convergence and the SRC and RMR indices was also analysed. Support measurements based on SRC and RMR classification were compared with those actually used during construction. These analyses indicate that for most of the tunnels examined, supports estimated using the SRC were much closer to those actually installed than those predicted by the RMR index. Bei der Verwendung des SRC-Systems zur Klassifizierung des Gesteins als Baugrund für 25 Tunnel in Spanien und Italien wurde festgestellt, dass viel schwerere Abstützungen benötigt wurden, als wenn die Beurteilung anhand des RMR-Systems angefertigt würde. Die Klassifizierung anhand des SRC- und des RMR-Systems, sowohl als auch andere wichtige geomechanische Daten wurden während des Ablaufs der Erkundungen und der Bauausführung gewonnen. Die Resultate der Messungen der Spannungen vor Ort, die Analyse der tektonischen Struktur und die Stabilitätsprobleme während der Bauausführung wurden dazu verwendet, um den im Felsgrund vorherrschenden Spannungszustand zu definieren. Das Verhältnis der Messungen der Tunnelkonvergenz zu dem SRC- und RMR-Index wurde auch analysiert. Die durch das SRC- und RMR-System vorhergesagte Grösse der Abstützung wurde mit der Grösse der Abstützungen verglichen, die am Bau letztlich verwandt wurden. Diese Vergleiche zeigen, dass für die meisten der studierten Tunnel die Vorhersage der Abstützungen, die anhand des SRC-Systems angefertigt wurden, viel näher der wirklich verwendeten waren als die Vorhersage anhand des RMR-Systems. Aços Inoxidáveis Supermartensíticos surgiram na indústria petroquímica como um material alternativo para confecção de dutos, devido principalmente ao sinergismo de suas propriedades mecânicas e de corrosão. Com esta nova demanda, tornou-se necessária a caracterização deste material em suas diversas propriedades, destacando-se neste trabalho o efeito da microestrutura na resistência à corrosão. Objetivou-se, portanto, o estudo da resistência à corrosão por pite de um aço inoxidável supermartensítico 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo-Nb em função da fração volumétrica de ferrita-delta (d) presente na microestrutura. A variação da ferrita-delta foi alcançada através de tratamentos de recozimento, a 1.050°C, durante diferentes tempos (de 0,5h a 48h). As amostras foram submetidas a ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica em eletrólito contendo 3,5% NaCl, naturalmente aerado. Quantificou-se, ainda, a porcentagem de ferrita em cada uma das condições através de ataque eletrolítico com solução 20% NaOH. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram a diminuição desta fase com o aumento do tempo de recozimento, chegando praticamente à sua eliminação com tratamento de 48h. Paralelamente, a resistência à corrosão por pite deste aço foi melhorada de modo proporcional à diminuição da fase ferrita, resultando em um aumento de aproximadamente 115 mV da pior para a melhor condição, comprovando que, de fato, a presença de ferrita-delta prejudica as propriedades de resistência à corrosão localizada.

A complete discussion of the literature on the subject of the influence of copper on iron and steel will be published elsewhere.' The present paper is concerned especially with the precipitation-hardening of copper steels, and brief mention will be made here only of the work of Kin-near,2,3 Nehl4 and Buchholtz and Koster,5 who alone have studied this phase of the subject. Kinnear found that normalized low-carbon steel castings containing about 1.0 per cent copper on drawing at temperatures in the neighborhood of 530" C. (1000" F.) increased in tensile strength and yield point, with little decrease in ductility. The maximum effect was obtained with about 0.9 to 1.0 per cent copper, and when the copper exceeded 3 per cent no improvement occurred on reheating. Kinnear did not study the effect of time of reheating—an all important factor where precipitation is concerned. Neh1,6 who apparently was unaware of Kinnear's work, recognized the change as due to precipitation and studied the interdependence of time and temperature of reheating, the temperature of the initial solution heat treatment, and the speed of cooling necessary to retain the bulk of the copper in supersaturated solution and to give an increase in hardness and tensile strength on reheating. Nehl found that if the final rolling or forging temperatures exceeded 700" C. (1300" F.) it was not necessary even to normalize the steel, but full precipitation occurred on merely reheating the forged or rolled shapes at 500" C. (930" F.). Buchholtz and Koster7 studied in detail the precipitation-hardening of a mild steel containing 1.0 per cent copper and 0.5 per cent chromium. Estimating the residual metal inventory of large heap leaching operations is desirable for many reasons. Several methods have been tried with limited success. Drilling data from the Valley Leach Facility at AngloGold Ashanti's Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine has been used to develop a robust inventory estimation technique. The technique is presented along with discussion of the particular inventory components and evaluation methodologies.

Ore concentration processes are a function of the respective particle size distribution; however, most of them do not use an efficient operational method to determine it. From a practical point of view, the surface area can be calculated for any size analysis. The physical principles for determining the size distribution in each method are different, for the results will not be compared directly. During the development of the research project of the sulfide ore flotation method using inert gas, different methods for calculating the specific surface area have been used, such as sieving, sedimentation/X-ray, laser diffraction and BET, i.e. specific techniques to determine the specific surface area of copper and gold ore concentrates. The statistical method of minimum squares was used to achieve practical correlation equations among them. Regarding these two ores, if one knows a specific surface area value using one of the methods above, one can predict the result of the others. Diminution of the reagent consumption was so controlled and it could be even decreased by using inert gas.

This paper describes mitigating measures and the design of compensation grouting which will be executed from deep shafts of the Amsterdam North/South Metro line project. Due to the specific conditions for TBM-tunnelling in Amsterdam (historical buildings on pile foundations near the tunnel and soft soils with high groundwater levels) tunnel construction necessitates mitigating measures, such as compensation grouting or soil freezing. Züblin developed a special shaft construction method for critical distances to buildings. For the compensation grouting Züblin developed a new software tool, called SOFIA, which controls and visualizes and thus optimizes the entire injection process. This tool significantly increases the efficiency of the injection works while reducing the geotechnical risks.

A multi-lift benching cut-and-fill mining method was adopted at Asamera Minerals (U. S.), Inc.'s Cannon Mine to balance the goals of high productivity and near 100 percent recovery with the need to minimize subsidence. High strength backfill was required to provide effective long-term overburden support and safe working conditions during the pillar recovery operations. Operational designs were evaluated using numerical modeling to predict global mine stability and backfill strength requirements. These models incorporated sequential mining of primary stopes, backfilling of primary stopes and recovery of pillars, and have been transferred to the mine operations group for use in evaluating different production sequences. The modeling has provided a better understanding of the structural response of the mine to excavation of the primary stopes and removal of the pillars. Predictions about the transfer of overburden weight to the abutments, pillars and cemented fill pillars have provided a criterion to evaluate mining plans and production sequence. Comparison of these predictions with actual mine structural performance has developed confidence in the design of the mining method and in the geomechanical design methods being employed. Primary mining of the B-North zone is nearly complete, and the stopes have been generally stable, as projected in the original design. The initial Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP), Version 1.0, was released at the 19th Gmund Control Conference. This original program has since been updated to Version 2.3 which was released in May, 2001. This paper describes the additional features of Version 2.3, focusing primarily on the following three aspects: (I) including uncontrolled convergence into the design requirements for standing roof supports, (21 the addition of design procedures for cable bolts as an alternative secondary roof support, and (3) the addition of new standing roof support technologies. Another new feature which should facilitate the development of design criteria for standing roof support is the capabilily to define ground reaction curves through convergence measurements alone wthout having to make support loading measurements. There are several other new features provided in Version 2.3 which are only briefly addressed in the paper. These include: (I) additional graphics capabilities to facilitate rapid assessment of support comparisons. (2) an East-West designation for support selection to more accurately provide cost and support availability data, (3) additional safety measures including a safety factor to identify support design near the peak support capacity, checks to see if the support dimensions comply with aspect ratio requirements, and measure of roof coverage for the design layout of the support system These new features of STOP provide more capabilities to design and analyze secondary roof support systems for conditions whlch could not be fully analyzed in the original version of the program.

Two separate constructed treatment wetland (CTW) systems receiving the same metal contaminated, acid sulfate water over different lengths of time and at different rates were evaluated for metal attenuation. Both wetlands are the alkalinity generator portion of a succesive alkalinity producing system (SAPS). Sequential extractions are employed to determine phases of metal removal. Results indicate that Fe, Al, Zn, Ni. and Cu accumulate in the organic substrate over time. Manganese accumulates initially, but is not retained in the system over time.

Considerable attention has of late been given to the blasting of large amounts of ore in one operation, on account of the saving in labour and explosives and consequent low cost per ton, and also on account of the additional safety to employees. The blast here described, at the Hidden Creek mine. at Anyox, B.C., is not necessarily unique either in size or methods employed, but some interesting p10blems were encountered and the solutions of these may be of interest to others engaged in similar work. The ore consisted mainly of old scope-bottoms and sill pillars, although there also were some braces and parts of vertical pillars included. Some of the stope-bottoms were overlain by caved waste, and one of the problems was to break them in such a manner that the maximum amount of ore could be recovered without serious dilution with waste. The ore blocks, designated as the 385 silt and the 7 A-103 blocks, were under preparation for blasting for over a year, as conditions permitted. This work consisted in drilling long machine drill holes, varying in length from 14 to 20 feet. These holes were drilled with the Numa detachable bit, made locally, starting at 2~-inch diameter and bottoming at 2 inches for the longest length. The long hole drilling was used in the thinner sections of the area. For the stronger, thicker portions, powder drifts (3 ft. by 4 ft. in section) were driven for the powder charges. Reference to the plan and sections (Figures 2 co 8 inclusive) show the relative location of these, as well as the long drilling. The amount of explosives used in the powder drift charges averaged 0.25 pounds per ton of estimated burden, varying from 0.2 to 0.3 pounds per ton.

An industry research project has been established to examine the issue of rock mass failure in large open pit slopes. The approach began with numerically modelling failure at the laboratory scale with a displacement discontinuity program. The interim results from the program suggest the output failure mode is dependent upon the input parameter cohesion weakening. Es wurde ein Forschungsproject mit unterstützung von Bergbauindustrie bearbeitet. Die Zielsetzung der vorliegenden Arbeit war die Analysierung des Böschungsgefähr im größen Festgesteinstagebauen. Das Verfahren besteht aus der numerischer Modelierung mit Ansatz einen sonderen Rechnerprogram. Die erste Ergebnis zeigt, daß die Aufgabe am Angabendaten (cohesion) abhängig sein wird. Un project de recherche industriel fût conduit avec le but d’examiner les éboulements de roche dans les mines a ciel ouvert. La premiere étape a été de modelliser numériquement les éboulements dans un laboratoire en utilisant un programme de déplacement discontinu. Les resultants préliminaires du programme indiquent que la prédiction des ébouliements est directement reliée à la magnitude de la cohesion.

INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. By using a computer application to monitor all aspects of the daily production as well as the maintenance, a company can immediately effect a cost reduction by studying the down-time and delay trends on an everyday basis. This paper will outline how a company can use a program to not only put a stop to the increasing supply and maintenance costs but start trimming each of these cost centers while actually increasing the efficiency and productivity of the current work force.

During 1975, the Reclasource Corp. constructed and started up a plant for the recovery of mill scale, coke breeze, blast furnace dust; blast furnace sludge; and TOC dust, at the site of Crucible Steel, Inc., Midland, Pa. The Reclaform Process was employed as the criteria for plant design. This process takes the solid wastes (as listed above) which are commonly found in integrated steel mills, sizes them, forms them through the use of a carbonaceous binder briquetting system, and fixes the binder through a final heat treating step. Blast furnace tests have been performed on 15,000 tons of Reclaform briquets. This paper gives a brief history of the program, and describes the process and the raw materials involved. The blast furnace campaign and its major conclusions are discussed.

Risk management for resources and reserves includes examining the fundamental processes of data collection, interpretation, modelling and estimation. Newmont Australia has developed a procedures manual to assist mine sites to build Resource block models, estimate Ore Reserves, validate the outcome and report the results. An audit scheme has been developed to compliment the procedures manual by assessing the degree of site compliance with recommended practice. A score of between one and five stars is awarded to each site depending on its performance in the audit. Audits are undertaken by a team of three Newmont personnel over a three to five day period at each site. Scores are ultimately compared between sites and reviewed annually. The objective of the program is to encourage continuous improvement in the modelling, estimation, validation and reporting practices used at sites and in advanced projects. The scheme provides a method of risk management for the companyÆs biggest asset û its Ore Reserves. Newmont Mining Corporation is preparing to use the audit scheme internationally in part to conform with recent legislation requiring US companies to demonstrate that management systems and procedures are in place to monitor and verify the companyÆs assets.
