The process flows of the three flotation circuits at the concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Ltd are described. Because of the complexity of the circuits and the associated reagent regime, the plant is equipped with a comprehensive range of control equipment. The different process-control strategies are discussed, and the modifications that have been necessary to the stabilizing control loops in the copper, lead, and zinc flotation circuits are shown in detail. It is concluded that the control strategies have continued to bring about benefits and improvements to the process.

The total available energy in an explosive charge is seldom fully utilized in industrial operations. For this reason more explosive is normally used to perform a job than we would calculate. In an explosive detonation some energy is generated as waste energy which can not be efficiently used. This results in added expense and possible environmental damage. This waste energy can create problems in metal forming with explosives and during commercial underwater blasting operations.

The first paper1 of this series described a technique of careful surface preparation by means of which reproducible results may be obtained from potential measurements of the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2. It then went on to establish the behavior of pure tin electrodes under these conditions and showed that the metal remains active at all times, though the steady potential attained after several hours decreases from 1.12† volts at a pH of 12.6 to 0.6 volts at a pH of 8.4. This behavior may serve as a norm with which all other data can be compared. In the second paper,2 small amounts of other anions were added to the carbonate solutions and the conclusion was reached that the common impurities encountered in alkaline materials packaged in tin do not increase corrosion. In fact, in some cases these anions may actually promote the formation of protective films. The present paper rounds out this survey by presenting data on the influence of cations added to the carbonate solutions, as well as the effect of alloy additions to the tin. In many cases the potential data are supplemented with weight-loss measurements. Information is also presented on the effects of some additional anions, the influence of gases above the electrolyte, the behavior of high-purity tin, and the effect of atmospheric oxidation on the corrosion resistance of the above-named alloys. Analysis of the entire body of data discloses some general rules applicable to corrosion in carbonate solutions. The experimental methods used are the same as those previously described. Experimental Data Cations.—The carbonates of the cations K+, Li+, NH4+, which are soluble, were studied in the same way as the anions, by adding 0.01 mol of the metal carbonate to one liter of 0.1 M sodium carbonate solution, pH 11.2, or to 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate, pH 8.4. The other metallic carbonates are only slightly soluble, of the order of 10-3 mols per liter or less, and the sodium carbonate solutions were saturated by adding excess reagent several days before the experiment, shaking frequently, and filtering just before use. The chemicals were c.p. grade in each case except the indium salt. This salt was prepared by solution of the metal in hydrochloric acid and precipitation by addition of Na2CO3. These cations may be divided into two classes, according to their effect on the potential behavior of the tin: (I) normal, (2) passive. To offer a basis of comparison, curves I of Figs. The mineral industry of Afghanistan improved substantially in 1976 as asbestos production was begun and feasibility studies were made of possible copper and iron and steel industries. The remarkable event of the year was the introduction of Afghanistan's 7-year economic and social development plan which covered the years 2976-82. The 7-year plan established ambitious goals for a gross national product (GNP) annual growth rate of 6.3% during its duration. To achieve this target, large increases in expenditures for economic development were programed in virtually every sector of the economy. Foreign assistance, in particular, was expected to finance a large share of new development projects. The major components of the plan were the development of transportation (highways and railroads), oil and gas exploration, construction of a copper smelter to exploit the copper deposits near Kabul, and development of an iron and steel industry to exploit the rich iron ore deposits in the central part of the country. Exports during the plan period were to continue to be principally agriculture products and natural gas to the U.S.S.R.

When driving mine roadways in the vicinity of tectonic disturbances and fault zones, sudden outbursts of gas, along with ejections of fine coal, occur. Substantial dynamic changes occur around the roadways in the coal and around the support. The problem has several aspects. Studies have been carried out on the technical analyses of the phenomena which occurred in the Velenje Lignite Mine from 1957 to 1988, The second part of the investigation involves systematic laboratory studies of strength and deformability characteristics of lignite samples and "in-situ" measurements of stress changes during the driving of some roadways. Analyses of events (using the model of limit convergence and the finite element method) showed the possibility of gas outbursts, taking into account the deformability conditions when crossing over from compact lignite to the disturbed region. The rate of advance of roadways and the method of support strongly influence the occurrence of the phenomenon. The preventative measures used in driving roadways under such conditions include trial drilling and the use of blasting instead of machine cutting.

The Kokomo (Tenmile) mining district has had an output valued between $20 and $30 million, mostly from production of silver, lead, and zinc, since 1878. For many years before World War II, there was little production, as the complex nature of the ores made them unattractive at existing metal prices. Under the stimulus of the war, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines studied they district, and in October 1944 the Bureau of Mines began an exploration project, which included dia¬mond drilling, bulldozer trenching, and geophysical surveying. Project work was continued until March 1949, except for short recesses during 1945, 1947, and 1948. Forty-five diamond-drill holes, totaling about 13,000 feet, were drilled from underground and surface stations on the various properties in the district. Eleven bulldozer trenches, abut 2,400 linear feet, were excavated in an attempt to uncover the outcrop of the middle Quail limestone. These trenches ranged from 100 to 485 feet in length and reached a maximum depth of 15 feet. A limited geophysical investigation was made during the summer of 1946. The length of the traverses were: Magnetic, 990 feet; resistivity, 6,250 feet; and self-potential, 69,780 feet.

For the past 3 years, the authors have been conducting research sponsored by the National Science Foundation (RANN) to improve the process of excavation by drilling and blasting. The approach followed has been experimental where the development of stress waves and fractures initiated at the bore hole have been investigated in order to obtain a complete understanding of the dynamic Fracture process. The second step in the approach has been to introduce modifications in the drill and blast procedure which will permit closer control of the fracture process.

"This paper provides a description of the Highmont copper-molybdenum concentrator from primary crushing through grinding, flotation, tailings disposal and water reclamation. The unique features of the operation will be emphasized.IntroductionThe Highmont property is located in the southern portion of the Highland Valley adjacent to and east of Lornex and about 4 miles south of Bethlehem Copper. The plantsite is at an elevation of 5100 ft.Highmont acquired the property in 1966 and in 1969 Teck Corporation entered into an exploration agreement which contained the option to finance the property to production . A detailed feasibility study of the project was completed in 1971. A positive production decision was deferred at that time because of the prevailing soft copper market and relatively low molybdenum price. The development of a strong molybdenum market in late 1978 and early 1979 led to a re-examination of project economics, and a decision to proceed to production was made in April 1979.The Highmont ore zones occur adjacent to and on either side of an east-west-trending quartz porphyry dyke. The two major zones , the east and west pits, contain 122 million tons of ore assaying 0.27070 Cu and 0.029% Mo. Chalcopyrite, bornite and molybdenite are the minerals of economic interest. Chalcopyrite is the predominant copper mineral. Mineralization occurs primarily along fractures and is zoned according to fracture density. Some pyrite is present, but for the most part it is outside the ore zone. Surface oxidation is shallow throughout the orebody.Wright Engineers Limited were responsible for the major part of the engineering design. Site construction, which began in the spring of 1979, is under the direction of Commonwealth Construction. The first concentrator line is scheduled for completion late in 1980, the other for early in 1981."

The gradual increase in Cr2O3 levels of UG-2 ores has become a matter of concern for platinum producers in South Africa due to the formation of chromite spinels in melters. The effect of bulk FeOx/MgO ratio, Cr2O3, temperature and oxygen partial pressure on phase stability and composition in the system FeOx-MgO-SiO2-Cr2O3-Al2O3-CaO has been studied between 1400°C and 1600°C using the drop-quench technique. An increase in temperature was found to result in a decrease in [Fe/Cr]spinel. This effect is shown in Figure 1 for the six slag compositions investigated.

This paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is cornrnonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. In this investigation, the possibility of physical separation methods such as attrition scrubbing, hydro-cycloning and also reverse flotation were investigated for silica and calcite removal from relatively low grade kaolin. The head sample was provided by the Iran China Clay Company and the major oxides contained in the head sample were Al2O3, SiO2, CaO and Fe2O3 with grades of 15.07%, 71.05%, 4.35% and 0.52% respectively. The liberation degree of calcite and iron impurities from kaolin particles were over 80% for particles finer than 210µm and 53µm respectively. Attrition scrubbing tests were carried out with scrubber cell of the conventional Denver flotation cell model D-12. Laboratory scale hydro cyclone was applied for the beneficiation of kaolin. Attrition scrubbing tests with control screen of 106µm did not achieve the desirable yield for purification of this kaolin sample, but hydro cyclone experiments resulted in better results. Hydro cyclone with 2.54 cm diameter used and the only variable was the cyclone inlet pressure ranging from 68.65kPa to 98.07kPa. The best inlet pressure was found to be 68.65kPa. Based on the optimized condition, Al2O3 and CaO amount in the hydro-cyclone overflow was 23% and 1.47% respectively. However weight recovery of the overflow in each cyclone experiment was less than 30% and multi stages of hydro-cyclones would have to be applied for higher weight recovery and better yield. All of the flotation tests were carried out in the conventional Denver flotation cell model D-12. Reverse floatation tests for calcite removal were carried out under alkali pH based on full factorial design of variables in 2 levels including one center point. The three parameters tested were collector dosage (gr/ton), pH and depressant dosage (gr/ton). The collected data from flotation tests were analyzed and optimized collector and depressant dosage were 1000 gr/ton and optimized pH was 8.5. Under the above mentioned conditions, calcite removal was about 75% and CaO content in the final product was reduced from 4.35% to 1.33%. However calcite removal will increase to more than 83% if the feed particle size in flotation tests is reduced from 210µm to finer than 53µm. Finally after optimization, the best working condition and possible flow sheet were developed.

A CSN possui 4 linhas de estanhamento eletrolítico (LEE) com capacidade de produção de 700 kt/ano de Folha de Flandres, nas quais durante o processo de estanhamento podem ocorrer desvios de qualidade que impactam no custo final do produto, afetando diretamente o custo de transformação da folha-de-flandres. Um destes desvios são as manchas superficiais (MS), caracterizadas por manchas na superfície do revestimento da Folha de Flandres que prejudicam o aspecto final do produto. O objetivo deste projeto foi reduzir o índice de desvio NOK por manchas superficiais das Linhas de Estanhamento 5 e 6 de 0,28% para 0,14% até abril de 2013. O projeto foi realizado utilizando a metodologia Lean Seis Sigma, obtida pela união do “Lean Manufacturing”, que visa a eliminação de desperdícios durante o processo produtivo e o Seis Sigma como uma estratégia gerencial que busca a maximização do desempenho dos processos. A metodologia é dividida em cinco etapas: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve e Control. Após a conclusão do projeto observamos uma redução de 65% no índice de desvio do defeito em relação à média do ano anterior (2012). Com esta redução obtivemos um ganho financeiro de R$212.000,00. Este projeto também serviu como projeto de Certificação de especialista Green Belt.
