In a recent paper' I took exception to the opening paragraph of Mr. Hill's paper, in which he says:— " In endeavoring to interpret the geological occurrence of oil, the geologist is confronted by the fact that science has not yet solved the problem of its origin, which lies at the root of the subject.... For the present we must consider oil as a material in the rocks, the origin of which is still unexplained." I take this occasion to repeat my objection to the above statement, as well as to the similar statement of Mr. C. W. Hayes and William Kennedy in their recent bulletin2 on the same oilfields :—" The origin of petroleum is one of the most obscure problems by which geologists are confronted." I do not hesitate to say that these statements, which claim we know so little to-day of the origin of petroleum, are not warranted in the present state of geological science, and that, on the contrary, geology can to-day most clearly prove the origin of oil to be inorganic and the result of solfataric volcanic emanations. Slurry density measurement, specially in cyclone feed streams, is fundamental to grinding circuit control. With the purpose of increasing the availability of such a measurement, the design of a soft-sensor in an actual grinding plant is addressed in this paper. The system is designed to substitute the momentary unavailability of the real density sensor, either because it has failed or because it has been removed for any other reason. The ARMAX model structure is determined using the stepwise regression method. Starting with a list of the candidate variables, the method selects, one by one, and in a systematic manner the variables which best model the measurement to be replaced, choosing them from the set of presumably correlated candidate variables. In this paper not only the single measurements are included in the list of candidates, but also combinations of such measurements having physical significance. A phenomenological model has been built with the purpose of determining these combinations. It turned out that in most of the cases the components of combined measurements having physical significance were selected by the stepwise regression method, instead of the single measurements. Actual grinding plant data is used to determine the model structure, to estimate the model parameters and to test the predictive capability of the developed soft-sensors. Good results are shown to be obtained during periods of up to 30 hours of the density soft-sensor operation.

The role played by lawyers in business has, in the course of the last 15 to 20 years, changed perceptively. This development has coincided with, and indeed has been a reflection of, the changing nature of Australian business, especially as the mining industry established its predominance in the Australian economy. The nature and extent of governmental regulation of business, too, has changed markedly. As a consequence, there has been a qualitative'change in the nature of commercial law practice. For the needs of business to be met, lawyers have had to develop specialist skills in new areas. Furthermore, there has been the emergence of the "in-house" lawyer, who increasingly plays a primary rather than a subordinate role in corporate law practice. There is no evidence to suggest that this trend, which is by now so well established, will prove to be ephemeral. Instead, with all indications pointing towards even greater governmental regulation of business activities, the intimate role of the lawyer in business seems entrenched.

A stability criterion for a lamellar eutectic interface was derived previously1 assuming that the wavelength, A,. of the perturbation which grows most rapidly is much larger than the lamellar spacing. A. This assumption was required to permit averaging of both the interface temperature and composition over the complicated geometry of a lamellae. If this assumption is invalid, as has been suggested.2,3 then the problem becomes too complicated to solve completely. The first of these analyses1 did not calculate the wavelength. A,. of the initially unstable perturbation. whereas the more recent analysis.' which led to a contradiction of this assumption. did not include one of the key factors for determining this wavelength. To rigorously determine the wavelength, the effect of the curvature of the perturbed interface (not considered by either of the above treatments) must be included. By omitting this term, one would be led to an incorrect conclusion regarding the magnitude of A,. but to an accurate criterion for stability as evidenced by the excellent agreement with experimental observations.' In the case of single-phase alloys. the critical wavelength. A,. for instability can be calculated from the Mullins and Sekerka4 (M.S.) analysis which includes the effects of capillarity. In the following discussion, the M.S. analysis is applied to lamellar eutectics and the critical wavelengths calculated for reasonable growth conditions in Pb-Sn eutectic alloys. In order to apply the M.S. analysis to eutectics. one may substitute i) the effective liquidus slope.1 m*. for the single-phase liquidus slope and ii) the ratio of the bulk alloy composition. "The zone of economic interest at H.J. Joel Gold Mine is the VS5/Beatrix Composite Reef, a quartz-pebble conglomerate of Archean age. The reef occurs at the base of the Eldorado Formation, Central Rand Group, of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. At least three stratigraphically distinct conglomerates form this economic zone. In order of deposition these are the Footwall, Beatrix, and the VS5/Beatrix reefs. The Footwall and Beatrix reefs are equated with the Aandenk Formation with transport directions toward the northwest, whereas the VS5lBeatrix Reef is of Eldorado age, with transport directions toward the south. The change in the drainage direction was caused by a major basin-wide tectonic event that occurred prior to the deposition of the Eldorado Formation. The Beatrix Reef was formed in a proximal, braided, fluvial environment by a process of aggrading gravel bars between channelways. The VS5/Beatrix Reef was formed by the desegregation of pre-existing Beatrix Reef with the introduction of new material containing much shale detritus and is seen to have been deposited in a more -distal, braided, fluvial environment, similar to the Beatrix Reef.The average gold concentrations are different for each conglomerate; the Beatrix at 32.1 ppm Au, the Footwall at 24.4 ppm Au, and the VS5/Beatrix at only 12.4 ppm Au. A sedimentary gold concentrating process related to higher energy braid channels was primarily responsible for these high gold grades. Not only the basal unconformity surface, but also, internal degredation surfaces, were prime sites for concentration. An understanding of the spatial distribution of these differing conglomerates and their braid channels forming the economic reef zone is necessary in predicting ore grades for future mining."

Airblast overpressure legislative limits can be extremely difficult to meet throughout Australia, which has by far the most stringent limits of any nation in the world. As the difficulty in meeting the limits is strongly dependent on the scale of mining, it is not surprising that the Australian coal mining industry is experiencing particular difficulties in meeting these limits. Eight full scale overburden blasts have been modelled with respect to overpressure impact for a strip coal mine, involving both dragline (cast) blasting and pre-strip (non-cast) blasting. Overpressure levels in the range 100 to 125 dBL have been measured at distances varying from 2.4 to 5.7 km, and modelling has successfully estimated both the amplitude and shape of overpressure waveforms to within an average of 1.2 dBL. Typical errors of prediction are around 0.6 dBL. This accuracy of prediction has been achieved by considering the impact of only the face holes, and the accuracy of prediction of both shape and amplitude suggests that it is these holes which dominate the environmental overpressure impact at distances in the range two to six kilometres, for cast and pre-strip blasting operations. Modelling has been based upon the Elemental Overpressure Wavelet proposed by Richards and Moore (2002), incorporating actual hole coordinates, actual delay timing, and assumed delay scatter statistics. The incorporation of delay scatter statistics has been particularly significant, and allows the determination of the range over which the peak overpressure levels are expected to vary. To date, modelling has considered only the use of conventional pyrotechnic delays, though simple adjustment to the scatter definition would allow estimation of overpressure levels, and their variability, with electronic delays.

Investment in minerals development usually entails big financial outlays. which will remain at risk for a long time before the venture can begin to generate a return cash flow. Before 'committing himself to such a venture the investor would be wise to carefully examine the possible consequences of his exposure to risk. In this context risk is defined in multiple terms, which relate the magnitude of possible loss with the probability that such loss may occur--normally the probability will decrease as the amount of possible loss increases. The analysis of risk is an essential component of the decision making process, especially so in the case of low grade high tonnage mining ventures where a very real possibility exists that future unfavorable circumstances may lead to losses that could cripple or ruin even the richest corporation. Wells (1979) postulates a rationale for making the investment decision under uncertainty based on the comparison of two independent risk criteria: 1) the risk inherent in the venture represented by the negative portion of the cumulative distribution of the net present value (NPV), as derived by a stochastic evaluation procedure, 2) the limits of risk the decision maker is willing to accept, taking account of the financial capacity-of the 'firm to absorb various levels of future cash shortfall should the venture prove disappointing. The chance the investor would be prepared to accept can be expected to decrease as the amount of the possible shortfall increases. The limits of acceptable risk are-defined by a curve called the "LL-curve" which can be directly compared with the cumu¬lative NPV curve. A positive investment decision is implied if the limits of acceptable risk are not exceeded.

An improved method of logging formation density has been developed in which the formation is bombarded with a collimuted beam of gamma rays. By means of a scintillation detector and pulse height discriminator, the gamma-ray energy band is accepted and recorded which corresponds to deepest penetration into the formation. Laboratory tests on a field tool revealed no borehole diameter effect for smooth holes and no effect of formation chemistry, except insofar as chemistry affects density. In extensive field tests, the density log has exhibited satisfactory agree-ment with core measurements and has correlated accurately with other logs. INTRODUCTION This paper describes an improved method of logging formation density by means of back-scattered gamma rays to penetrate the formation together with energy discrimination to select only that energy (or frequency) range corresponding to deepest penetration into the forma- tion. This method of density logging was developed at the La Habra laboratory of California Research Corp.* Field instruments have been built and tested by McCullough Tool Co. and commercial service has begun in some areas. All of the data discussed here were obtained for the original field tool. The density log can be a valuable adjunct to existing logs because of its use in determining porosity quantitatively. It is useful also in connection with seismic and gravity surveys where formation density information is of interest. PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES The intensity, I, of a beam of gamma rays after traversing a distance, x, in an absorbing medium is given by I = loe -ax where I, is the intensity of the beam entering the medium and a the attenuation constant or macroscopic cross section of the medium for gamma-ray absorption. The macroscopic cross section depends on the number and types of atoms per unit volume and the gamma-ray energy. In brief, it is the sum of the atomic cross sections of all atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material is the sum of the masses of all atoms per cubic centimeter. Thus, the density and the macroscopic cross section for gam-ma-ray absorption vary in propor- tion to the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. The density of the material increases, of course, if the atomic masses increase without a change in the number of atoms per cubic centimeter. When the density increases in this latter way, the macroscopic cross section increases also, but disproportionately. This results from the fact that part of the gamma-ray absorption arises from the photoelectric effect and the pair-production effect**, which are proportional to the sixth and to the second power, respectively, of the atomic number of the absorber. The remainder of the absorption results from the Compton effect, and is directly proportional to the atomic number. The gamma rays that undergo Compton scattering are not immediately absorbed. Since these rays are scattered in all directions, a fraction will emerge from the face of the medium at which they entered. If a gamma-ray shield is placed between the source and detector, most gamma rays reaching the detector will be those scattered out of the medium. The concept of optimum fragmentation in surface mining operations, i.e. the degree of fragmentation to which corresponds the lowest overall associated costs of drilling, blasting, loading, haulage and crushing, was developed more than thirty years ago. Recent field investigations using novel technologies, which have been completed by ICI Explosives Canada and by others, indicate that this ultimate goal of optimum fragmentation is closer to becoming reality.

Northwest frontier is here defined as Alaska, the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia. The mineral potential of this area is great and will unfold in the decade ahead but now the largest single producer is the Pine Point lead-zinc mine in the NWT about 1200 km north of Edmonton, Alta., close to the south shore of Great Slave Lake. The mill, initially designed for 4540 mtpd, was expanded to 7250 mtpd in 1969. This operation is described in detail in Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc, Vol.1, Chapt. 17, SME/AIME in the article by W. H. R. Gibney.

E. W. Parker, Washington, D. C.: In connection with Mr. Blauvelt's paper, a brief sketch of the development of by-product coke-making in the United States may prove of interest. The first radical departure from the prevalent beehive oven to the by-product retort oven was inaugurated in 1891 by the Solvay Process Company, at Syracuse, N. Y. In that year was begun the construction of 12 Semet-Solvay ovens, which were completed in 1893. During 1893 these ovens produced 12,850 tons of coke, an average.of a little over 1000 tons each. In the following year the production amounted to 16,500 tons, not quite 1400 tons per oven. These 12 ovens were in reality an experiment, the success of which was attested by the addition to the same plant of 13 more ovens, begun in 1895 and completed in 1896. They were followed by the construction in 1896 of 25 ovens of the same type at Sharon, Pa., and 50 more at Dunbar, Pa. These 100 ovens represented the total number of Semet-Solvay ovens completed and in operation up to the close of 1897. The construction of 180 more, however—120 at Ensley, Ala., and 60 at Benwood, near Wheeling, W. Va.—was begun in 1897. The plant for the latter is laid out for double the number stated. The 60 ovens begun in 1897 have now been completed. An initial plant of Otto-Hoffman ovens was built at Johnstown, Pa., in 1895, and began making coke in 1896. One hundred and twenty additional ovens of this type were begun in 1896 and completed in 1897 at Glassport, near McKeesport, Pa. During the present year 100 Otto-Hoffman ovens are being added to the plant at Johnstown, and 400 of the same type are in course of construction at Everett, near Boston, Mass. The plant at the latter place is laid out for a total of 1200 ovens.

Within the mining industry computers have made their most significant impact with 3D design, visualisation and resource modelling/ optimisation. Recently, the application of computers to data gathering and accounting functions has also started to reap benefits. These two areas of application cover the beginning and end of the mining process. There has been limited use of computers on the middle section, the actual mining process. This is interesting when considering the relative proportion of overall mining costs that this section produces. There is a certain amount of irony in the lack of mining application software for developing accurate budgets compared to the systems/software then used to review performance against budget. Computers have been used extensively in the manufacturing industry to design, model and simulate the manufacturing process. This has not been extended to the mining process. But, we all strive to have an open pit that replicates a manufacturing plant û smooth, efficient, optimal production. If we could model mining operations with the confidence of plastic box makers we would reduce risk by an order of magnitude, improve planning and focus on value drivers. Cost û benefit analysis would be easy. The extrapolation of manufacturing to mining process models is difficult. The variables in the manufacturing process are fewer in number, have low volatility and are highly predictable. The time between a box falling on a conveyor belt and falling off is very consistent. Mining is quite the opposite. It has large numbers of variables, some of which are unpredictable and volatile. The time to fill an excavator bucket could vary by 30 per cent and the frequency distribution is unlikely to be a mathematically simple normal distribution. Further, each of these variables can be distorted by one-another û they are interrelated. The mining process is a disjointed flow of parcels whereas manufacturing is a controlled continuous feed. A loaded truck might join a ramp and follow a slow water cart up. This is the equivalent of a localised voltage drop on equipment in a manufacturing plant. The manufacturing plant is quite likely to rapidly recover to full capacity. Whereas the slow truck might throw the mining fleet cycle out of balance for hours û trucks queuing at the ROM bin and so on. A mining process simulation has been created that addresses these mining variable issues to produce a highly accurate model of the open pit mining process. The number of uses for such a model is growing rapidly as it is being utilised for a variety of projects within the industry. This paper discusses the need for and application of mining process models.

During the last week in March and the first week in April, 1973, the Naval Underwater Systems Center measured the 76 Hz magnetic field strength (in Wisconsin and Texas) produced by both the elevated and (newly installed) buried Wisconsin Test Facility (WTF) north-south (NS) antennas. The principle result obtained from these measurements is that there is no measurable difference in performance between the WTF buried and elevated NS antennas.

The Rainbow Lode is situated at Walkerville, in the Summit Valley mining district, Silver Bow County, Montana Territory, about one mile from Butte City. It was so named ill 1876 by Mr. J. E. Clayton, in recognition of the broadly-sweeping curve of the outcrop across the rounded surface of the eastern slope of a granitic mountain, at an elevation of about 6000 feet above the sea-level. It is on the western side of the range which divides the waters of the Missouri from those of the Columbia. History.—The history of the district is an instructive one. The water-courses and flanks of the hills were worked for years for placer gold. Millions of dollars' worth of low-grade gold have been washed out of the surface gravels below the veins of the district. Missoula Gulch and Silver Bow creek, just below Butte, are noted for their rich placers, and they continue to yield largely, producing within narrow limits from $50,000 to $100,000 dollars' worth of golddust yearly. It is ragged vein-gold, and evidently is near its parent source. It is no doubt derived from the disintegration of the veins of the district, and this conclusion was soon forced upon the miners. The veins which were seen outcropping boldly upon the slopes above them were located, and prospecting commenced. These outcrops were found heavily stained and blackened with oxide of manganese, and were porous and honey-combed in places, showing that the quartz was formerly filled with pyritous ores, and that these ores had decomposed and dissolved away, leaving, however, portions of the precious metal behind, especially at and near the surface of the ground. Assays of the croppings gave variable and often contradictory results; but the fact. that these were the outcrops of lodes bearing gold and silver in depth was patent to any experienced observer of mineral veins. The lodes of the district were first brought prominently to notice by Mr. Clayton in 1876, and in October of that year the Alice mine, upon the central portion of the lode, was opened by Mr. Marcus Daly, now so well known as the superintendent of the Anaconda Copper mine, upon another extremely interesting lode, in the same region.

AFTER the phenomenal development of the new mine, the United Eastern Mining Co., with Mr. Frank A. Keith as President, decided to install a reduction plant. The character of the ore, closely resembling the product of other mines in the district, did not offer any particular metallurgical problems, since these neighboring mines had been operating milling plants very successfully for several years. Thus, with the general metallurgical treatment fairly well-defined, the matter of next importance was to design and construct a plant as economically as possible, that would give the best results obtainable. The ore consists of a mixture of calcite and quartz in about equal quantities with some decomposed andesite, while the average value of mill heads were calculated to be $20 plus in gold, no silver being present. The tonnage to be treated at ,the start was fixed at 200 tons, but, in view of the favorable condition of the mine, it was considered advisable to arrange facilities, for increasing the capacity to 400 tons. . While it is best in some cases to adopt a distinct independent unit system where future enlargement is contemplated, in this instance the plans worked out differently. Summarized, the treatment adopted consists of coarse crushing, coarse grinding, fine grinding and cyanidation. For coarse crushing the selection of the No. 6 size gyratory crusher was governed not so much by its capacity as by the size of the feed openings to properly receive the run-of-mine material, which was too coarse for a No. 5 crusher. To accomplish the coarse grinding to. best advantage, a careful comparison was made between the modern steel ball mill-the last word in crushing and grinding-and one of its older, and, at that time better-established, competitors, the rolls.' The following conclusion was reached: While it is possible that for the sized plant under consideration the cost of operating rolls might be a little cheaper, it is preferable to use ball mills because a simpler arrangement is possible, and1 because. the handling of, ball mills is preferred by the operator.

The paper examines the problems that arise in undertaking socio-economic impact studies to meet the requirements of environmental-impact legislation governing new mine development or expansion. An approach to undertaking socioeconomic impact studies is outlined, responses to specific problems are discussed and ways in which the mining company can use these studies to meet its general objectives are explored. The paper concludes by examining how a socio-economic study, as required by legislation, can be used to assist the mining company in achieving some general objectives it will have in developing a mine.

Legislation, if it is to be effective, must be enforceable by the state and acceptable to the industry. In the mining industry the relationship between the government inspector on the one hand and the mine management and employees on the other, must be one of full co-operation before the system can be effective. To understand our present system, which is-duplicated in most countries of the world, an examination of the history from which it evolved is necessary.
