The in-situ mineral characteristics of a deposit are simulated by sequential co-simulation and averaging the simulated characteristics within specified block volumes creates a three-dimensional block model. This model is then submitted to optimal open pit and production scheduling algorithms. As the market values of industrial minerals depend on the satisfaction of predetermined blending criteria rather than metal content, a Linear Programming (LP) scheme has been used to identify all blocks that can be included in the blend without violating the grade requirements. The Lerchs-Grosmann algorithm using the blocks identified by the LP program determines optimal pit limits. All blocks that lie outside the optimal pit are removed from the system and the blocks within the optimal pit are submitted to the production-scheduling algorithm. Production scheduling optimisation is done in two stages: Lagrangean parameterisation, resulting in an initial sub-optimal solution, and multi-objective simulated annealing (MOSA) improving the sub-optimal schedule further.

Southwest of the town of Saltville in western Virginia is Plasterco, a small village that has been a source of gypsum production since 1815. Boasting the deepest underground gypsum mine in the world, Plasterco has been the site of mining operations by United States Gypsum Co. for more than half a century. And although its own ore supply is dwindling, Plasterco's position as a source of gypsum and gypsum products has been ensured by the recent opening of the nearby Locust Cove mine, one of U.S. Gypsum's newest projects. In the early days, production of gypsum at Plasterco was very small, the primary use of the mineral limited to that of "land plaster"-ground gypsum spread on the land to sweeten the soil. Initial mining was confined to surface outcrops containing gypsum, but the construction of a local plaster-producing calcining plant in the late 1800's coupled with al- most total depletion of the surface rock spurred the start-up of underground operations.

The possibility of using unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys as an approximation to fiber composite materials is investigated. The short-term me.chanical properties and failure modes of unidirectionully solidified A1 (rich)-Cu alloys containing ap -Proximately 0, 17.5, and 27.7 vol pct of 0 phase 'fibers" are determined at temperatures from 25" to 500" and compared with those obtained for conventionul SAP alloys. In a previous publication,' hereafter referred to as I, the possibility of understanding some of the room-temperature mechanical properties of unidirectionally solidified castings was explored. For Al(rich)-Cu and Al(rich)-Mg two-phase alloys over a substantial range of compositions, the yield and ultimate strengths and common ductility measures were very adequately predicted from the principles of fiber strengthening4 and the analysis of ductility outlined by Gurland and Plateau." The results obtained in I suggest the possibility of using unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys to simulate fiber composite materials where the inter-dendritic second phase or constituent acts as the reinforcing material. Recent attempts concerning the fabrication of fiber conlposites have concentrated on producing composites with a good bond between fiber and matrix and with very long fibers so that their maximum contribution to the strength of the composite may be realized. However, these objectives are difficult to attain in practice and present fabrication processes are either extremely laborious or costly.13 The slow, unidirectional solidification of eutectics has received considerable attention as a method for producing composite materials. 5,6 This method can fulfill both of the above objectives but it is currently laborious, expensive, and has the additional disadvantage that the volume fraction of reinforcing phase cannot be easily varied. On the other hand, unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys, also with a good bond between the phases, are relatively easy to make and the volume fraction of reinforcing "fibers" can be easily varied by changing the average composition of the alloy. The disadvantage of the cast alloys is that the mechanical effectiveness of the "elongated interdendritic reinforcements" (EIR)* may be reduced due to their rela- tively short lengths, the w factor in Eq. [2] of I. However, if the EIR have a high strength their contribution can be considerable. For composite materials containing discontinuous cylindrical fibers of various lengths the ultimate strength is given by1 where it is assumed that the composite fractures when the fibers fail. In Eq. [I], a, is the stress in the matrix just prior to failure of the composite, Vf is the total volume fraction of fiber reinforcing constituent, Vf(l+) is the volume fraction of fibers whose lengths exceed the critical length, I,, which is defined as the shortest length of fiber in which the stress can build up sufficiently to break the fiber. af is the fracture strength of the fiber material, w is a factor accounting for the discontinuity of those fibers whose lengths exceed I,, 1-/d is the average aspect ratio of those fibers whose lengths are shorter than I,, and t is the shear stress in the matrix at the fiber-matrix interface. The factor w is dependent on the length of the fibers and also on whether deformation of the matrix occurs plastically or elastically. However, for a given length of fiber, w is smaller when elastic deformation of the matrix is assumed.' It is of interest to consider the properties of simple unidirectionally solidified, two-phase alloys at elevated temperatures in view of the possibility of using suitable modifications for high temperature service. Knowledge of the creep behavior of these materials is still rudimentary (although under active investigation) and the present paper concerns itself with short time tensile properties of some alloys similar to those investigated in I (i.e., unidirectionally solidified Al(rich)-Cu alloys). Unidirectionally solidified alloys containing 5.6, 17, and 23 wt pct Cu were tested parallel to the direction of solidification at temperatures from 25" to 500°C. In the present investigation, the alloys were homogenized for 2 days at 535°C giving a matrix of homogeneous a phase (5.2 wt pct Cu) and an interdendritic constituent (EIR) which was completely Q phase (53 wt pct Cu). EXPERIMENTAL Alloys of nominal composition 5.6, 17, and 23 wt pct Cu (containing approximately 0, 17.5, and 27.7 vol pct 8 phase, respectively, after homogenization at 535°C) were prepared by melting 1200 g of A1 (99.99 pct) in a high purity graphite crucible and adding the appropriate amount of freshly cleaned copper chips (99.9 pct). The molten alloy (at 700°C) was poured into a preheated graphite mold (also at 700°C) and the ingot unidirectionally solidified by impinging water on the steel baseplate of the mold. Computer control of flotation at the Ecstall concentrator By M. P. AMSDEN, C. CHAPMAN, and M. G. READING Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1,1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1,4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

Henderson Mine personnel have more than 20 years experience and have placed more than 400,000 m3 (520,000 cu yd) of shotcrete and concrete. Over the last 20 years, the mine has used a variety of equipment to place concrete, wet shotcrete and dry shotcrete and is constantly trying to cut costs and increase efficiencies. Recently, the mine received a state-of-the-art wet shotcrete placer. The batch plant was automated, and a mobile concrete-form jumbo was fabricated. The mine will also receive a new concrete transport truck. Henderson’s background The Henderson Mine is owned by Climax Molybdenum Co., a unit of Amax, Inc. It is an underground, primary molybdenum producer near Empire, CO. The mill is located between Silverthome and Kremmling, CO and is connected to the mine by 16 km (10 miles) of underground and 8 km (5 miles) of surface track. Except for the ore haulage system which is powered by overhead trolley, all mobile equipment is rubber-tired and diesel-powered.

The Penjom Gold Mine is one of the world's worst preg-robbing gold ores, yielding very low recoveries from traditional CIL methods. Gold recovery from the cyclone underflow was targeted to recover as much gold as possible in the absence of the fine preg-robbing carbon. Gold is recovered by intensive cyanidation and tabling of a gold concentrate produced by gravity from the cyclone underflow. The circuit was designed together with Gekko Systems and uses their InLine Pressure Jig and InLine Leach Reactor technology to reject the preg-robbing carbonaceous material and obtain high recoveries from the gravity concentrate before over grinding the carbon and sulphides. The gravity and intensive cyanidation circuit now recovers almost 50% of gold in new mill feed, with unit recovery in intensive cyanidation of up to 90%, the highest unit recovery in the plant. Operating costs for the gravity and intensive cyanidation circuit are under US$2.50 per oz, while the cost to recover gold from the cyclone overflow is -US$200 per oz. (not including common costs of milling, stripping and electrowinning). Figure 1 shows the increase in gold recovery due to the gravity and ILR circuit coming on line at Penjom.

(written discussion *).-The writer's conclusions with reference to the possibility of finding commercial deposits of petroleum in Brazil were published in 1908 in the Final Report of the Coal Commission of Brazil.1 Since this volume is not generally accessible, and the author has nothing to acid thereto, the following quotation found on pages 243-7 may prove of interest: The Possibility of Petroleum Deposits in Brazil "The writer has often been asked to express an opinion as to the possibility of finding petroleum in commercial quantity in Brazil. "The question is one that does not admit of an adequate answer except for the regions visited by the writer, which as already stated, include only, a portion of that great territory, and only the southern portion of Brazil; namely, the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catharina, Paraná, and a few rapid excursions across São Paulo, and Minas Geraes, as well as the brief visit to Marahú in Bahia. "The Merelani graphite-tanzanite deposit is located in northeast Tanzania, 14 kilometers south of Kilimajaro International Airport and in close proximity to the towns of Moshi and Arusha. The graphite mineralization is hosted by relatively undeformed linear Proterozoic metasedimentary gneisses, several of which have been subjected to hydrothermal alteration resulting in tanzanite mineralization. Exploration work comprised detailed geological mapping coupled with pit and trench channel sampling and a subsequent 1500 meters of diamond drilling. In addition, metallurgical tests have shown the graphite to be of unusually coarse flake size, crystallinity and high purity.Feasability studies have shown the economic viability of a major coarse flake graphite deposit with the measured resource to 50 meters in excess of 9 million tonnes assaying over 85 graphitic carbon. Production is due to start by the end of the first quarter of 1994 with the processing plant design capacity initially set at 15 000 tonnes per annum.In addition to graphite production, tanzanite will be produced through selective mining within the graphite open pit in the upper horizon and from underground workings within the lower horizon.The Merelani graphite-tanzanite deposit will be the first major orebody to be exploited through means of private funding since Tanzania gained independence"

Zircon is extensively used as moulding sand in the production of steel and high-duty iron castings. To achieve a satisfactory grade of zircon concentrate, the zircon particles may need ,to have surface coatings removed, as such coatings can hinder electrostatic and magnetic separation of zircon from associated minerals. Xn addition the presence of surface coatings on the zircon. particles can cause sinterins and fusion of the zircon to the east metal resulting in "burnt-on" sand or fritting of the casting. "Burnon" necessitates cleaning of the casting by grinding or chipping, which is expensive and results in loss of definition on the casting face.Hudson (1966) has pointed out ,that some coatings on mineral sands are lightly-adhering clays which can be removed quite readily by agitating the sands in water for a few minutes-thus their removal constitutesno problem. However, the heavy gingery coloured coating which adheres strongly to the surface of the particles in some deposits, and which has generally been considered to be a form of iron oxide (Baker, 1962; Hudson, 1966), cannot be removed effectively by attrition cleaning in water (Hudson, 1966). Such coatings limit the usefulness of these concentrates in the foundry industry.An investigation of strongly-adhering coatings on "ginger zircon" concentrates from the Yoganup deposit of Westralian Sands Ltd has shown that the stain consists of a cemented mixtvre of hydrated iron and aluminium oxides and kaolin minerals, and that it can be removed by a relatively low cost treatment.IDENTIFICATION OF THE STAIN BY XRDX-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns were obtained from small samples of stain scraped, individually, from the surface of hand-picked zircon and ilmenite crystals. These scrapings were mounted on quartz fibres and exposed to CoKa radiation in a 57 mm Debye camera. To avoid heavy fogging of the x-ray films, a substantial amount of the iron oxides was preferentially leached from the scrapings (before mounting) with an ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid solution (Rooksby, 1961). "IntroductionThe stages of development for bringing a mill into production demand that a flowsheet for the process be developed at an early stage. Detailed engineering of the mill may then proceed without duplication of engineering effort on alternative processes. In the case of gold and silver mills, several process alternatives exist which must be evaluated before the flowsheet is finally fixed. The recently developed Carbon-in-Pulp process has added to this choice.Clearly, the major factor in determining the most suitable process is the amenability of the particular ore to a given treatment. Other factors that will also influence the choice are location, climate, power and water supplies, and available capital.Gold and silver milling processes can be divided into three main types:Gravity Concentration;Flotation;Cyanidation.Combinations of the three are frequently used; i.e. flotation followed by cyanidation of the concentrate, or gravity concentration in the grinding circuit with cyanidation of the classifier overflow. The following are the salient advantages and disadvantages of the three main alternatives.Gravity ConcentrationGravity concentration is suitable for free-milling gold ores, i.e. ores in which the gold is relatively coarse and free from sulphides. It should be noted that just because an ore is high grade, it is not necessarily free milling.Gravity concentration methods include jigs, shaking tables, spirals and more recently Reichert cone concentrators. All methods exploit the density difference between gold, which has a specific gravity greater than 15, depending on how it is alloyed, and the gangue, which usually has a specific gravity range of 2.7 to 3.5.A concentrate grade of several hundred ounces per ton might be produced, but recoveries by gravity alone are generally low in comparison to other methods. For this reason, gravity circuits are usually used in combination with flotation or cyanidation circuits."

Increased emphasis has been placed on recycling consumer and industrial waste products. This trend has created a new industry that is focused on recovery/ separation of byproducts from waste material. As a result, interest has increased in the development of separation systems designed for the recycling industry. Much work has been done in this area. However, existing techniques developed for minerals beneficiation are often ignored. An example of is the foundry industry. There are currently more than 3,000 foundries in operation throughout the United States. Each consumes between 9 and 900 t/d (10 and 1,000 stpd) of sand for mold production. Either silica, chromite or zircon is, used in various combinations with chemical or clay binders. After casting, the sands are typically discarded into a landfill. This practice has become an environmental concern, especially the disposal of chromite and zircon. Silica sand is not environmentally sensitive. But it is used in greater abundance (6 to 7 Mt/a or 6.6 to 7.7 million stpy)and thus has prohibitive haulage and landfill costs. Current technology for sand reclamation involves thermal treatment to remove residual binders followed by dry mechanical attritioning (Leidel, 1993; Klein, 1994). This approach results in high losses due to fines generation and high costs associated with thermal treatment. As a result, this approach has shown only limited success. Stringent regulations are also affecting the disposal of secondary materials, such as plastics and metals. This is particularly true for the ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal industry. It plays a major role in industrial recycling of steel, aluminum and copper. Applications such as wire recycling present challenging problems since a hazardous byproduct (plastic insulation) is generated by the recycling.

SAMPLING of the fluid from oil wells for percentages of oil, emulsified oil, and water during the last two years has brought out some interesting facts concerning oil-water emulsion. This result led to a laboratory investigation of emulsion, which substantiated the conclusions made from the field observations. The purpose of this paper is to present the information collected, the laboratory experiments, and our interpretation of the same. In order to define emulsified oil exactly, give its synthesis and origin, and to show how and when it is formed in the wells, the work was necessarily divided into two separate lines-laboratory work and field observations. It is hoped that this study may lead to a discussion of such points so that the petroleum engineer, geologist, or technologist may be benefited by its practical bearing on oil-field management. Special credit is due Mr. Everett Carpenter, chief geologist of the Empire Gas & Fuel Co., for his assistance and cooperation in this work. LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS ON EMULSIFIED OIL Laboratory investigations were conducted in an attempt to learn the composition and some of the properties of emulsified oil, or B. S., as it is more commonly called, also to demonstrate, by laboratory methods, how B. S. may be formed under conditions similar to those existing at the time a well is being pumped, and how it may be broken down. Literature bearing on this subject is widely scattered and very limited in scope. Bacon and Hamor define B. S., or bottom settlings, as "earthy matter, inert organic matter, or, in the case of Pennsylvanian petroleum, an emulsion of paraffin wax and water, which accompanies crude oil." We have developed a new firing system which simplifies the handling and extensively increases the safety in electric blasting operations. Based on the principle of the transformer, this system is operated as follows: When a high frequency alternating current pulse (70-110 kHz) is applied to the lead wire and connecting wire (primary circuit), magnetic flux is generated in the transcore, and an induced current flows through the looped leg wire of the detonator (secondary circuit). Then the detonators are ignited by the induced current.

The annual rainfall at Minera Yanacocha's gold mining operations in northern Peru averages 1.2 meters. The influx of water into the operations is higher than losses to evaporation and by ore absorption which results in a positive water balance. To minimize water intake and maintain a balance, some special operating procedures are required, and a system involving diversion ditches, storm ponds, heap skirting and detoxification and treatment of excess water is practiced. As a result of the publication, several years ago, of some articles on determining the constants of empirical formulas, the determining the constants of types of curves used for estimating the production decline of oil wells was brought to the writer for study. Methods requiring the minimum of time and labor and the maximum of rigor were sought, as it appeared that the nature of the data from which such curves are computed and the relative uncertainty of occurrence of the events predicted from them did not justify close adherence to the theory on which the solution of such problems is ordinarily based. The technical deficiencies of the solutions presented in this paper, from the standpoint of the method of least squares, are readily apparent to those familiar with that method, but their presentation in detail here is irrelevant to the subject matter. However, it is the author's conviction, after a rather exhaustive study of the problem, that the value of the solutions lose little by the approximate application of the conventional theory. It must be understood by those who use these formulas that the solutions herein given, and the formulas based on them, are merely facilities to aid the valuation engineer in forecasting future events. It is assumed, also, that before application is made of them, prescient judgment based on the circumstances in each case, shows that the forecast has some probability of realization. On this basis only will these formulas be found useful.

The origins of the electrorefining process date back to 1869, when the first ER cathodes were produced at Pembrey, South Wales. By the time that Pembrey was closing, Chuquicamata tank house was under construction, initiating in 1915 a long history of electrolytic cathodes production. Initially electrowon cathodes and later electrorefined cathodes were produced. During the history of Chuquicamata tank house, there have been several challenges associated with the quality demanded for electrolytic copper. Among them, the transformation from electrowinning to electrorefining in 1952, the onset of the direct commercialization of ER cathodes and the phase out of wire bars in the 80s, several technological changes including the implementation of permanent cathodes, and certainly the constant increase in complexity of the anodes refined. This paper explores the manner in which Chuquicamata has addressed these challenges and examines its links to process characteristics, which have been necessary to maintain a product quality according to market requirements and a brand, “CCC”, that is widely recognized worldwide. INTRODUCTION Located in the north of Chile, in the Atacama Desert, Chuquicamata is an open pit copper mine that for many years has played a relevant role in the global and local mining industry. Known from prehispanic times, the Chuquicamata deposit was initially developed between 1912 and 1915 by the Chile Exploration Company, the operating company of the Chile Copper Company controlled by the Guggenheim Brothers in the USA (Yeatman, 1916). Officially inaugurated on May 18th, 1915, by the President of Chile who pressed a button in Santiago sending a telegraph signal to the power generation plant specially built in Tocopilla, 1500 km north. It signaled the beginning of generating energy, sending it to Chuquicamata, another 140 km east (“El mineral de Chuquicamata”, 1915), marking the beginning of its industrial operation.

My attention was called by Prof. Henry M. Howe to the article by N. M. Wittorff, entitled Preliminary Investigation of Primary Crystallization and Subsequent Physico-Chemical Permutations in Iron-Carbon Alloys Containing More Than 4 Per Cent. of Carbon. I thereupon wrote to Mr. Wittorff and received a copy of the paper in the Russian language, with permission from him to publish a translated abstract in our Transactions, the original having appeared in the .Journal of the Russian Chemical Society, vol. xliii. (1911), in which it occupies some 78 pages, with 10 illustrations and 47 micrographs. The novelty of the data presented, and especially the scientific importance of Mr. Wittorff's deductions, as well as their value in helping to clarify our meager understanding of that useful but puzzling commodity, cast-iron, seemed to more than justify a publication of the essential facts in concise form in the English language, which has not been done previously so far as I know, although a very brief abstract has been published in German, and a somewhat more extended one in French.' When the work of translation was begun, I did not know that it bore in part upon the investigations of Ruff, which Howe is reviewing at some length at this meeting. This coincidence renders the following condensed translation of Wittorff's work, which I have prepared with the aid of Sidney Marcus as interpreter, the more appropriate here. The result of Wittorff's study is greatly to extend our knowledge of the hyper-eutectic alloys of iron and carbon, and to add several significant lines at the right-hand side of the diagram originally drawn by Bakhuis-Roozeboom, and developed by Roberts-Austen, Benedicks, Carpenter and Keeling, Upton, Goerens, and others. This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. This is ascribed to the greater adsorption densities caused by increasing the xanthate chain length. As batch flotation tests showed similar trends for amines, an investigation of the adsorbing properties of amines was undertaken. Because earlier investigations showed adsorption densities for dodecylamine salts on quartz varying as much as 20 times under apparently similar conditions,1-4 it was decided to make a survey of the changes in adsorption density due to the drying conditions of the quartz. THE primary function of the mining engineer is to find mineral deposits and fuels in the accessible rocks of the earth and to recover them for the vast needs of our complicated civilization. On him has been placed the responsibility for the exploitation of the nation's and world's mineral resources. The degree to which the minerals of the earth have been utilized serves to an extent as a measure of man's material advancement, as well as an index of the relative strength of nations. The natural endowment of lands, varies greatly, but the intellectual energy of a people is revealed by the way in which they take advantage of their heritage of minerals or reach out to less developed regions by exporting their engineering skill as well as capital to secure the raw materials they need.
