High-grade concentrates from Florida pebble phosphate deposits have long been recovered by wet methods. When work was begun in the field, only the coarse pebble (generally +1 mm) was recovered. In the 1920's a froth flotation process was developed to separate quartz from the finer phosphate fractions, but this method proved unsatisfactory for treating the intermediate fraction (-1 mm +35 mesh). Consequently various other processes were adapted, including agglomerate tabling and spiral separation of reagentized feed. Today the three processes are used-washing and screening for coarse pebble, tabling or spiraling for intermediate sizes, and flotation for -35 mesh material.

There has been considerable discussion of late as to the best method of determining the silver-contents of sulphides of silver resulting from the leaching of silver-ores, and also as to the relative merits of the crucible- and the scorification-method for the determination of the silver-contents of ores. Owing to the great depression in the silver-market, these are questions of considerable importance, at the present time, to both the producer and the smelter and refiner. Extensive undersea coal reserves, identified in the offshore portion of the Sydney coalfield, Nova Scotia, have resulted in the implementation of a multi-year research program to develop site specific guidelines for the undersea longwall mining operations. At present, uncertainty exists regarding the applicability of the current undersea mining guidelines. Preliminary studies have revealed four potential schemes for monitoring seafloor longwall subsidence profiles: seasurface, subsea, geophysics, and direct monitoring. However, further work has indicated that the use of marine geophysical techniques may be the most effective method of identifying and evaluating seafloor subsidence profiles by comparing pre- and post-mining seafloor topographies.

OBSERVATIONS have been made that the substitution of antimony for bismuth in Bi2Te3 leads to anomalies in some of the electrical and magnetic properties of the Bi2Te3-5S2TeS alloy system at the composition ratios 2 Bi2Te3 : 1 Sb2Tes and 1 Bi2Te3 : 2 Sb2Te3. Airapetiants and Efimova1 have reported the peaking of the nondegenerate hole mobilities, at these compositions for sintered materials and ascribe the peaking to the formation of ordered alloys. The concept and operation of novel shaft sinking systems utilizing roadheader-type cutter booms, including mucking, conveying, and hoisting installations, are described. Selection criteria, performance data, and economic considerations for various shaft excavators are presented. Various applications of this low-cost and flexible system for civil engineering and mining projects will be discussed. The cutter booms can work in both soft ground and competent rock. Furthermore, the novel excavator can operate in ground stabilized by grouting, cementing, and freezing. The flexible cutting system can be used both for excavation of shafts, foundation pits, slopes, and for tunneling (drifting).

In a four-year period between 1973-76, the Metal Mining Division of Kennecott Copper Corp. conducted a company-wide program of operations improvement which involved line and staff personnel from all company functions. Specialist teams performed detailed studies of all operational aspects at Kennecott's four copper mines and concentrators, four smelters, and two electrore-fineries. The specific recommendations that resulted may transform the Metal Mining Division into the country's lowest cost producer of copper by the mid-1980s. In this article, N. J. Themelis and R. V. Flint describe the mechanics of MMD's integrated approach to operations improvement.

Advanced process control has been implemented at the Jerritt Canyon Mill. Plant production prior to 1997 was limited by grind circuit capacity. The installation of additional mill horsepower and an optimizing supervisory control system achieved a throughput increase in excess of 12 percent. The controller application utilized a seamlessly integrated fuzzy logic expert system for real-time mill control coupled with a neural network predictor for closed-loop feedback of particle size constraints. In late 1998, a second supervisory controller was installed to operate the fluidized bed roasters. The second controller optimized roasting conditions, increased plant throughput and improved metallurgical recovery.

The Thistle Drainage Tunnel drained water impounded behind the Thistle slide and serves as permanent diversion of the Spanish Fork River and Thistle Creek around the slide area. The project involved 684 meters of 5 m horseshoe tunnel, a 5 m diameter raised shaft and 23,000 cm of cut excavation.

The Equity Silver mine has been a severe producer of Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) since 1982. The mine was closed in 1994 and a compacted clay cover installed, but ARD continues to be produced. Three permanent employees manage the collection and treatment system at the site. The site still poses a significant environmental risk to the environment and downstream users and requires a high level of diligence. Various stakeholders' perspectives of the risk posed by Equity, and what constitutes acceptable risk, will be examined in this paper from a company operation staff, corporate environmental manager and downstream environmentalist perspective.

The Transportable Moisture Limits, as ,measured by the procedures laid down in The IMCO Code of Safe Practices for Bulk Cargoes, determine the target moisture contents for the concentrates produced at the West Coast Mines of Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery. Filtration of these concentrates gives moisture contents considered to be low in comparison with those achieved for similar sulphide concentrates, but which are very close to these Transportable Moisture Limits. The filtering techniques used are outlined and the problems associated with-maintaining concentrate moistures below the required limits, together with the methods used to solve these problems are discussed.

The third special war meeting of the New York Section was held on Thursday evening, Sept. 27, in joint session with the New York Section of the American Electrochemical Society, in conjunction with the Third National Exposition -of-Chemical Industries, at the Grand Central Palace. The topic for discussion was ferro-alloys, and the supply' of raw materials for their manufacture. After a few introductory remarks by President Philip N. To control the airblast from blasting to regulatory limits at environmentally sensitive sites near the Collinsville Coal Mining Operations, it has been necessary for Thiess Mining to incorporate a wavefront reinforcement analysis model in the predictive environmental airblast design. Controlling airblast from cast blasting 70 m high faces with 2000-3000 kg of explosives per hole within 700 m of houses presents a considerable challenge to the blasting personnel. This paper describes the model used and summarises the results of an investigation designed to quantify the increase in airblast indicated by wavefront reinforcement diagrams to further calibrate the model for future prediction.

In 1985, ASARCO Incorporated terminated copper smelting operations and associated byproduct arsenic trioxide recovery at Tacoma, WA, although shipments of arsenic trioxide from stocks and limited production from cleanup operations continued. Imports of arsenic trioxide increased markedly as a result of increased demand for arsenical wood preservatives and the decline in domestic shipments of trioxide. Expanded world capacity more than met the increased demand for arsenic and its compounds, and prices remained unchanged throughout the year. Domestic Data Coverage.-Arsenic trioxide was produced by one U.S. company, which voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines.

In the routine examinatlion of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of non metallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-frec surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimen. such as tool metals c3o1ltaining various carbide and nitride phases. It, is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work. Procedure The specimen is flattened with considerablecare on a file or sharp cutting sanding belt, since the initial production of a flat surfacc greatly facilitatcs subscqucnt polishing. The polishing motors have two speed., 600 and 1200 r.p.111. ,It higher speeds specimens arc likely to he over-Ileated, therefore the high speed is used only when a saving of time is important. The following abrasive papers are used consecutively: Yo. 2, So. 1, No. 0, No. 00 and No. 000. The final wet polishing is done oil a cloth-covercd metal disk. "This paper describes the development of a dynamic model for a full- scale (64 tonnes/hr) grinding circuit consisting of an open-circuit rod mill feeding a ball mill operating in closed circuit. The object of constructing such a model is to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of potential control schemes. Model selection, data processing and parameter estimation are discussed, and static and dynamic results of simulations are presented. Conclusions are drawn with regard to the adequacy of the model for such studies, and likely limitations on control of such circuits.IntroductionThe model developed here is intended to represent the grinding behaviour of the grinding circuit at the Lake Dufault division of Falconbridge Copper Mines Ltd. This circuit has been fully described elsewhere. At the time of the work described, the ball mill discharge was fed to a four-cell flotation bank , the tailings of which are combined with the rod mill discharge in the cyclone feed pump sump. As the emphasis in this study is on grinding behaviour, and as only I per cent of cyclone feed material is removed in these cells, no attempt has been made to include flotation behaviour in the simulation. One effect of the presence of flotation cells in the grinding circuit is, however, to necessitate somewhat finer grinding than might otherwise be needed: this will have effects on mill parameters.The paper is organized as follows. First the selection of models is discussed, paying particular attention to the problem of selecting simple, yet adequate, flow models for the mills. Then data gathering is described. The method of deriving mill model parameters is explained, and the results presented. Mass balancing of cyclone data and the determination of cyclone model parameters are described. The linking of the models into a full simulation is outlined, and sta tic and dynamic results presented. Finally, the results are discussed and conclusions drawn ."

The importance of the minerals industry in the economy of the country is discussed, and the tremendous changes that have taken place over the past two decades, including the widespread application of computers and the use of mechanization, are outlined. A discussion of the future of the minerals industry points out that, with the rise in the price of gold, the life of the gold-mining industry can be expected to extend beyond that previously predicted, and that the demand for uranium, which has been depressed, is uncertain. As a result of the oil crisis, the demand for coal has increased and large expansion programmes are planned. These involve coal exports and the use of coal for the generation of electric power, for the production of liquid fuels, and for the smelting of metals. Technical challenges face engineers in every avenue of the minerals industry: in deep gold mines, underground coal mines, strip coal mines, and open-pit mines. Studies indicate that only one-third of the demand for trained mining and metallurgical engineers is being met and that the position is worsening. However, there are indications that the industry is succeeding in attracting more engineering students, and the supply is expected to improve. These efforts should be co-ordinated, expanded, and intensified. There is a need to ensure that sufficient teaching staff of the right calibre and experience are attracted to universities and technikons. The first degree course is comprehensive and basic, and specialization through post-graduate study should be encouraged. The influence of national service on the education and training of engineers is discussed.

A knowledge of the principles of punctuation is essential to effective and intelligible writing, for the ease and pleasure of the reader, and even his understanding, may depend upon the choice and the placing of punctuation marks. To 'punctuate' is to mark with stops or points; the word comes from the medieval Latin punctuare (punctuatus), which in turn is derived from the Latin punctum, a point. The purpose of punctuation is to show the manner in which the writing is to be understood; to indicate the relations between parts of a sentence and between successive sentences. To some extent "it does for the eye what vocal stress does for the ear", but especially it marks logical relations. Some punctuation marks, such as those indicating admiration, exclamation, and interrogation, are rhetorical as well as grammatical, but most of the common ones are logical or grammatical. My discussion will be confined to grammatical punctuation in ordinary writing. "The problem of punctuation in text matter", as George Summey * says, "is to employ words, points, and paragraph breaks in such a way as to achieve at the same time clearness, proper distribution of emphasis, and the desired kind of movement." The criticism of the punctuation of a sentence or of a group of sentences is not final until the context, within the paragraph, is read. A paragraph is a sentence or a group of' sentences forming an independent unit of the composition; it represents a unit of thought. A multiplicity of paragraphs produces a choppy effect; on the other hand, paragraphs of excessive length are tiresome, because the belaboring of one unit of thought wearies the reader. "In March 1993, Ram Raising Limited was faced with a challenge. Placer Dome Incorporated, Dome Mine Division requested from Ram Raising that they design station excavation into the existing No. 8 shaft from No. 3 mine levels. This work had to be done without loss of production time in the underground department.Due to the time frame of the project, every detail had to be carefully considered, with extra care that all pros and cons had been worked out.Ram Raising submitted a work Plan that had been worked out with the Redpath Group which included the infrastructure requirements; the engineering design; the scheduling and sequence of work; and the excavation design and blasting procedures.A proposal was' put together by both Ram Raising and Placer Dome outlining the infrastructure requirements, including the engineering design, scheduling and sequence of the work, excavation design and blasting procedures. The proposal accepted by Placer Dome and, on July 3D, 1993 work commenced to breakthrough eight stations. Work continued until December 1993 with the completion off our stations. The project was then stopped to allow the station access drifts from No.3 mine to be completed. The second phase of the project began on May 27 and was completed on September 15, 1994.This paper shows how, through innovative design and the full cooperation between client and contractor, a project of this nature can be completed successfully."
