Measurement of the environmental impact of ground vibration from blasting operations is based almost exclusively on the peak vibration level generated. This measurement is known as the Peak Particle Velocity or PPV. The recorded PPV is used to assess the impact of the vibration both in terms of structural damage and human response. Limits for vibration are almost universally quoted in terms of PPV levels and, as a consequence, blast design for vibration control is centred around techniques for the control of this peak value.

In an effort to conserve and extend oil resources, the use of powdered coal-in-oil mixtures (COM) as an alternate fuel in oil-fired boilers is receiving increasing attention. For the approach to be successful, some degree of stability of the suspension against settling is needed. The variety of means available to achieve stability of this nonaqueous slurry is reviewed along with some of the physical and chemical concepts which underlie each method.

The application of the Scintillometer to radioactivrty surveys in boreholes of oil wells has made it possible to determine bed thickness with a high degree of accuracy. This fact, combined with known relation of logging variables, makes thin bed porosity determination practical. With the use of the Scintillometer a method hot been derived whereby the apparent level of radiactivity, as recorded on radiation logs, may be converted to the true level. The true level of radioactivity is that level to which the recording pen would have traveled had the detector remained at a given depth for on infinitely long period of time. This factor is: radioactivity level, Ra, is the apparent radioactivity level, T is the bed thickness, D is drag, and L is the length of the detecting system. This method depends entirely on accurate measurements of bed thickness and drag. A thorough discussion of the concept of time constant and logging speed as related to drag is undertaken. INTRODUCTION Neutron curve interpretation has become one of the accepted methods for porosity determination in oil field practices. A great deal of literature has been published about neutron derived porosities, but this has been concerned with thick beds, or possibly even averaging of a series of thin beds as a single unit. There has been a lack of written information on methods whereby porosity can be evaluated for beds less than 10 ft in thickness. In certain areas, production is derived from relatively thin formations. The importance of thin bed evaluation, the fact that the Scintillometer is an adequate tool for this application, and the general lack of published information concerning neutron porosity for thin beds are the fundamental reasons for presenting this method of porosity determination. This concept is not put forth with the idea of discounting existing methods, but is merely suggested as a modification of other accepted methods of porosity determination which makes no allowance for quantitative evaluation of thin beds. The effects on the neutron log of counting statistics, statistical variation in the porosity of earth materials, and hole size must be taken into account to obtain neutron derived porosities. Since these effects have been described in past literature, the authors have not made an attempt to go into the subject in detail. With the use of statistical and repeated sections on the log, it may be determined which responses on the log actually correspond with lithologic changes. Pacific Rim countries currently have plans to import about 100 Mt/a (110 million tpy) of steam coal by 1990. Due to its close proximity, Powder River Basin coals offer a long term economic and dependable source of supply to the Pacific Rim. In existing boilers, Powder River Basin coals can be blended with Australian, South African, or Canadian coals. For new units, Powder River Basin coals are very competitive on a total evaluated cost basis. The advantages of using Powder River Basin coal include: assurity of supply, consistent coal quality, stable labor force, and attractive mining economics. The morning fog rolled off the Pacific Ocean as engineers surveyed a 27,000 sq ft (2,500 sq m) contaminated slope in Davenport, California. This case study from a former Cemex cement plant site demonstrates how innovative drilling and soil stabilization techniques can address complex en- vironmental challenges while protecting sensitive ecosystems. This paper describes the record-keeping and reporting responsibilities of the West Virginia Department of Mines and tells about the pilot project conducted to demonstrate the feasibility and worth of implementing a computer-based formation management system encompassing the large amount of data used by the Department and to lay the groundwork for future implementation of a state-wide information network. The paper briefly discusses the equipment and software that was used. It also discusses the system data files and subfiles that were constructed (or will be constructed in later phases of the project). Finally, the paper describes how the system will expand in the next several years.

Many blasting companies are using simulated production ground vibration waveforms to aid them in the control of their vibration effects. The simulations are typically produced by using a seismograph to record a signature waveform from a single hole shot and subsequently applying the various delays to be used in a proposed production design. The ability of this simulation method to give good results usually depends on three primary factors. These are: 1) the homogeneity of the seismic travel path from hole to hole; 2) the consistency of the seismic energy release per unit of explosive from hole to hole; and 3) whether or not the delays fire as planned.

Barrick closed the Bullfrog Operation in November 1999.During its life, the Bullfrog produced ore from three open pit mines and an underground mine; 32,000,000 tons of ore were processed at the 9,000-ton per day oxide mill. The mill tailings were deposited in a 320-acre tailings impoundment. When operations ceased, an estimated 750,000,000 gallons of water remained to be removed from the tailings impoundment. During operation, the drain down water from the tailings impoundment was pumped back to the mill for reuse; since closure of the mill, the drain down water has been managed by a combination of passive and forced evaporation.

A commercial high pressure roller press (KHD 90125) was installed at the Coleraine Minerals Research Laboratory for testing in October, 1994. Pilot plant evaluation of the high pressure roller press has shown that it can be used as an alternative to the rod mill for the comminution of taconite. A series of pilot plant tests were run to compare roller press products to rod mill products in a simulated taconite flowsheet using magnet separation and closed circuit ball milling. Further investigation of a hybrid grinding system, roller press crushing followed by ball mill grinding, indicate that the combination may represent the most energy efficient system for taconite processing.

The export markets are of great importance to western Canadian sulfur producers, taking 70% of total products sold. For these marketers, Canadians have always supplied solid sulfur, first in a crushed, bulk form, and for the past several years in a slate form. Both form have proved inadequate for safety and environmental reasons, and new forms and processes have been developed by interested suppliers. The Canadian industry has evaluated these processes and ha made a determination of a desired Product specfication that will greatly enhance the acceptability of future Products from safety, environmental, and customer points of view. The new processed methods and resulting product characteristics are reviewed.

Ferromanganese crusts on topographic highs in the western Pacific Ocean are believed to be potential resources of cobalt, nickel and platinum. Earlier shipboard geological and geophysical studies by Japanese organizations have focused on mapping of distribution of thickness and metal contents of the deposits when estimating the total reserves. This paper summarizes our attempt to obtain more feasible data of distribution patterns and configuration of the deposits which are important parameters for resource evaluation at some seamounts in the South Pacific Ocean. Morphology of the seamounts and micro-topography of the sea floors are described using shipboard acoustic remote sensing, deep-tow sonar images, and TV/camera. [ ]
