A new elution process has been developed for the recovery of gold thiosulfate from ion exchange resins. This is a synergistic system which utilises a base eluent, such as nitrate or trithionate, along with an additive that improves the elution of gold. The use of the additive enables lower eluent concentrations to be adopted, as well as weaker eluents such as chloride. With the chloride + additive system, complete gold elution can be achieved within 12 BV when utilising an eluent flow of 5 BV/h. When the eluent flow is reduced to 2 BV/h, complete elution is achieved within 8 BV. Similar results are obtained when using nitrate or trithionate as the base eluent. A copper pre-elution process has also been developed, whereby the majority of copper can be stripped within 5 BV prior to gold elution. This method is a significant improvement on the ammonia + oxygen pre-elution previously suggested. The development of a new analytical procedure based on ion chromatography with UV detection is also described for the quantification of polythionates in leach solutions and loaded on resins. This enables analysis to be carried out for resin-in- leach type processes where the polythionates are being formed in solution and simultaneously adsorbed onto the resin.

Studies relating to the behavior of coal toward oxygen may have for their purpose the determination of the fundamental factors that underlie spontaneous combustion, weathering and deterioration, and the general topic of storage, as well as those properties that have to do with the underlying principles of carbonization. There is also involved the possibility of developing information relating to the constitution of coal, or at least the chemical properties inherent in the type substances of which the coal is composed. It is the purpose here to record certain results bearing on this latter idea of the chemical properties that characterize the main constituents of bituminous coal. The avidity of freshly mined coal for oxygen has long been known. What happens to the coal or to the oxygen is not so clear. Is the oxygen absorbed or chemically combined, and what are the conditions as to time, temperature, texture, or components that are most involved in the phenomenon? If we subject a weighed quantity of coal maintained at a constant temperature to a current of oxygen, we may obtain three factors of interest—the weight increase of the coal, the weight of the water, and the weight of the carbon dioxide formed in the reactions involved at that

It is recognised that presplitting is a special case in blasting which requires the reduction of conventional explosive pressures in order to avoid excessive rock damage. Two routes to achieving this are the use of reduced density explosives or the practice of decoupling the explosive from the blasthole walls. Applications of two such systems in large diameter, deep blastholes are described. Both systems were tested in presplits alongside sections charged with decks of conventional explosives.

INTRODUCTION Summary of Factors Influencing Comminution Circuit Design The selection of an appropriate comminution circuit for a specific ore is one of the most important decisions in the design of a processing plant. The importance is related to the fact that the capital and operating costs for crushing and grinding plant generally represent, as is well known, the major portion of the plant costs. This chapter will, therefore, identify as many as possible of the factors which influence the selection of a comminution circuit. The number of factors which will have to be considered for any comminution project will depend, among other things, on the type of project. If, for example, the project is an entirely new mining development, then most, if not all, the factors identified will have to be analyzed. If the project is an expansion of a developed mining operation or if the new orebody is adjacent to a viable operation, then the existing operation will influence the choice of factors or design constraints which need to be considered. The existing infrastructure or supporting systems may be quite adequate to accommodate the requirements of any expansion or new development. Hence, those factors may not have to be considered. To cover, however, the widest spectrum of projects, the factors which have been identified in this chapter are those which will have to be considered for the most complex of projects, that of developing an entirely new mining operation. The range of factors is as broad as the range of different ore types. Thus, each development must be treated with individualized care. The most important step in the development is the analysis and understanding of the ore characteristics. The hardness of the ore, its abrasiveness, friability, moisture content, grade, mineralization including gangue mineralization, liberation size, chemistry, and other characteristics should be the first to be analyzed in the investigation. The next should be the determination of factors such as plant size, throughput, location, climate, accessibility, and availability of water. It is a pleasure to introduce this session on frontier technology and present an overview of pyrometallurgical technology, as it is today and where it may be heading. While there have been many advances in hydro-metallurgical processing in our times, pyrometallurgy has not been still, and more novel processes have been introduced in the last four decades than in all previous ages of humanity put together. As a result, pyrometallurgy has managed to remain the predominant mode of producing metals from ores and concentrates: over 95% of the world primary metals production, including iron, manganese, copper, lead, chromium and nickel, is obtained via the high temperature route. Some of the characteristics of pyrometallurgy, along with the corollary industrial advantages are shown in [Table 1]: [ ] On the other hand, the necessity of operating at high temperatures also entails special problems and it is unfortunate that research on how to overcome these problems has not, in most cases, kept up with the development of these wonderful novel processes. We shall first speak of the important developments in pyrometallurgy which have brought us to the current state of the technology, and subsequently on the problems still encountered and the kind of research and development that will be necessary to bring pyrometallurgy on a par with other late twentieth-century technological developments.

ALTHOUGH everybody is familiar with coal, few persons have an exact idea of, the great impor-tance of this precious fuel. Coal is the black bread of industry. Without it, industrial activity is much restrained; and so the great industrial countries of Europe and the United States of America are the great producers of coal. The 1913 production of coal in Belgium was 22,842,-000 tons, valued at 418,700,000 fr., nearly a half billion. In 1919, it was 18,483,000 tons, about 81 per cent. of the production before the war; in 1920, it had reached 22,414,000 tons, approximately the production before the war. To show the importance of coal production of Belgium, let us say that the coal industry employed 168,000 workers in the year of 1920, the metallurgical industry only 129,000 and the textile industry 103,000. The coal industry, then, employs the greatest number of workers. The value of the coal production in 1919 is estimated at 1,121,000,000 fr. On the basis of the production before the war, the value of the production of iron in 1919 would have been 701,000,000, of finished steel 1,086,000,000, and of zinc 415,000,000; therefore, in 1919 the value of the coal industry was greater than that of the metallurgical production.

In its strict application the name is limited to the fibrous varieties of the monoclinic amphiboles. Commercially, however, the most important of the asbestiform minerals is chrysotile, a fibrous variety of serpentine. About 95 per cent. of the asbestos used in manufacturing is chrysotile, and it commands a much higher price than any of the other fibrous minerals now on the market. Although the production of asbestos has increased rapidly in recent years, comparatively little has been published concerning its origin. Materiais poliméricos sofrem danos estruturais ao serem submetidos à radiação X. Estes danos podem causar reticulação, quebra de ligações entre outros danos. Em diversos serviços de radiodiagnostico e de radioterapia é utilizado placa de etileno vinil acetato, EVA, para auxiliar o posicionamento de pacientes crianças ate 2 anos em radiografias de tórax. O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar se este material é adequado para ser utilizado nestes serviços. Para tanto, amostras do material foram submetidas a dose de 25 kGy e avaliados por espectrometria de infra vermelho com transformada de Fourier, e a superfície por medidas de rugosidade e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Os resultados indicam que o material apresenta degradação com dose de 5 kGy e aumento da rugosidade.

O forjamento a quente em matriz aberta é, atualmente, o processo mais utilizado para a fabricação de peças de grande porte. Neste estudo, a simulação numérica foi utilizada, através do método de elementos finitos, para análise do processo de forjamento em matriz aberta de um eixo vazado e escalonado aplicável em aerogeradores. A partir de um billet cilíndrico vazado de aço AISI 4140, pesando 1 kg, é simulado o processo de forjamento objetivando a obtenção de geometria final apresentada. Utiliza-se matrizes superior e inferior em formato côncavo, e um mandril de manipulação com inclinação de 1,15°. A cinemática da simulação numérica, que inclui 4 passes com um número total de 30 cursos, é avaliada. Ao comparar a geometria apresentada com a obtida observa-se que o alongamento longitudinal da forma final é obtido. A partir da análise da temperatura, pode-se concluir que o reaquecimento deve ser realizado após cerca de 45 s, no final de cada série de 5 cursos.

Visto tais necessidades deste setor, a avaliação destas se torna importante diante da possibilidade de utilização de processos de deformação plástica severa (DPS) para o refinamento de microestrutura, a qual irá acarretará assim, melhoras em propriedades mecânicas. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o comportamento mecânico, através da dureza HV, medida por um ultramicrodurômetro instrumentado, desejando encontrar uma maior homogeneidade microestrutural bem como o seu refino.

The clay occurs in irregualr beds overlying the Prairie du Chien Dolomite and the St. Peters Sandstone near Hersey, St. Croix County.

Large hole drilling generally refers to diameters from 9 to 17 inch (229 to 432 mm), however a considerable amount of rotary drilling is done in diameters from 6½ to 9 inch (165 to 229 mm). These smaller diameters are especially prevalent in gold mining and quarrying.

A brief review of the development and ultimate design of the Model 16 Photometric Sorter is given, including the differences between it and its predecessor, the Model 13, which is currently in operation at Doornfontein. A description of the West Driefontein sorting plant is given, together with the rationale of its design. The installation programme for the sorters is described, and current operating and maintenance procedures are discussed. Operating results are tabulated and compared with the original test results. Operating costs are also discussed.

King, Bozeman, Mont.: The form of measuring up ore in sight looks very plausible, as illustrated in the paper of Mr. Emmons, but from my experience of many years of mining in Montana and Nevada, I have found it is very hard to measure up anything nearer than a guess of what you have in sight, except in the case of a true vein, or a flat vein where the boundaries are well defined. I have been interested in several miues with Dr. A. R. Ledoux, and I know that my foreman and myself, going into the mines and using our best judgment, could seldom see more than 30 days' supply actually in sight, and yet we were running from 100 to 250 tons a day, and keeping it up year after year. Prof. John D. Irving, New Haven, Conn.: I understand from Mr. Emmons that this is a method which has been found applicable in the copper-mines in Tennessee, where the record could be made with a good deal of accuracy, and where the work in the mines allowed the necessary development to be done, so that the record could be kept up. I do not think there was any intention in his mind to imply that this was applicable to all cases, especially such as Mr. King has mentioned. President Charles Kirchhoff, New York, N. Y. : I think the point is that the paper impresses the necessity for doing it where the possibilities exist. There has been too little attention given to this very matter, particularly in the United States; but I think our English friends are following it very much more zealously, and the demand for it there is possibly greater than it is here, because English boards of directors handle mines that are often very much further away than our own are, and the English public and the English engineers generally are very much more insistent upon seeing how much longer current dividends are going to last, or current assessments are going to continue.

METALLURGISTS differ considerably in their opinions regarding the effect, if any, of small amounts of iron pyrites, or other iron compounds on zinc sulfide ores during the roasting operation. As a result, the literature on this subject expresses many conflicting ideas. The ore, previously crushed to pass through a one-millimeter screen, dries in the roasting kiln, losing water up to 200° to 300° C. At 150° C. iron pyrites begin to lose sulfur. As the temperature increases, while the ore is passing to the hotter part of the furnace, the sulfur burns to sulfur dioxide, leaving the metals as zinc oxide and ferric oxide. These two substances then interact to form zinc ferrite, a compound, yellow brown in, color, having the general characteristics of a spinet Like magnetite, another spinel, zinc ferrite is insoluble in alkalis and dilute acids. As a result, when leached with 10 per cent. sulfuric acid solution zinc values tied up in this compound remain behind. HISTORY In the electrolytic recovery of zinc from its ores, the roasted ores are usually leached with a 10 per cent. sulfuric acid solution. When the zinc ore contains iron pyrites as an impurity in an appreciable amount, the actual yield of metallic zinc is much lower than a theoretical calculation would indicate. Further, losses of zinc are, in a rough way, directly proportional to the amount of iron pyrites or other iron compounds present. When the iron is present in the ore in an isomorphous relation to the zinc, as in the case of a marmatite, a greater amount of zinc remains insoluble than when present as a true pyrite or marcasite. Work on the insoluble residues obtained from leaching of the calcines shows that the zinc lost is intimately tied up in this residue. Some investigators have suggested a definite compound, such as zinc ferrite, others merely a mixture of zinc and iron compounds.
