"Thermoset polymers, like the polyester, become harder with increasing temperature owing to molecular crosslink formation, which is a thermal benefit for composite matrix applications. Natural lignocellulosic fibers, however, have low thermal resistance and tend to degrade with increasing temperature. Therefore, the combination of a lignocellulosic fiber, as reinforcement, with a thermoset polymer, as the matrix, results in a composite material with complex thermal behavior. In the present work, a thermal analysis was conducted on polyester composites with different amounts of coir fibers. Both TGA and DTG curves were analyzed to determine the effect of the coir fiber on the thermal resistance of the composites. It was found that the coir fiber sensibly affects the thermal behavior of the polyester matrix for fiber amounts above 10% in volume. This effect is associated with an increase in thermal degradation.IntroductionIn recent years, there has been an increase application of natural fibers as reinforcement of polymer matrix composites in several industrial sectors, with special participation in automobile components [1-3]. In order to extract gold from the complex sulphur-arsenic bear­ing raw materials and to remove arsenic and sulphur from the process in an ecologically safe form we have studied oxidizing roasting of highly arsenic gold bearing concentrates with soda, leaching of cinders, processing of the obtained solution and extraction of gold from the cake. There were processed concen­trates containing from 5 to 28% of arsenic, 12-20% of sulphur in the form of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The content of gold in the concentrates was 4-75 git. The roasting temperature was changed in the range of 773-l 173K, the consumption of calcined soda was 75-200% of stoichiometric necessarily for bonding of arsenic and sulphur into the water soluble compounds, the dura­tion of the process was varied in the range of 10-120 minutes. Under roasting in optimal conditions up to 97% of arsenic and 95% of sulphur go into water soluble compounds. The out­put of cake is 65-70% of the concentrates. A. B. Cummins (Industrial Minerals Review, P. 164) was born in Los Angeles, Calif. and attended the University of Chicago and University of California. He received a B.S. and Ph.D. degree. He has worked at University of California and as a development and research engineer with Celite Co. He is at the present manager of research at Johns-Manville Co. in Manville, N. J. Dr. Cummins is an AIME member and has presented previous papers before it. He resides in Bound Brook, N. J. Aureal T. Cross (Recent Coal Geology Research, P. 202) was born in Findlay, Ohio. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the University of Cincinnati. He received major honors at Coe College and was given a National Research Council Fellowship in geology from 1943 to 1944. He was assistant professor at Notre Dame University from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Cross was a paleobotanist with U. S. Bureau of Mines, Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh. He was assistant professor of geology at West Virginia University from 1949 to date. He holds membership in Geological Society of America, Paleontological Society, Botanical Society, Sigma Xi, and numerous similar societies.

FAULTING at Kennecott, with its attendant fracturing, is unusual, complex, and important. As study. and knowledge of the various fault systems have progressed, appreciation of that importance has helped in the selection of proper horizons for exploration and in the avoidance of useless crosscutting and drifting. During the study of this faulting and fracturing, a suggestion concerning the formation of the ore-bearing fissures occurred to me. Further study in the available portions of the approximately 45 miles of workings in the Kennecott mines for the purpose of checking up the the suggestion led to the hypothesis which this paper will attempt to present. Briefly, the hypothesis may be stated as follows: The formation of transverse faults that stop against a main, system is connected with changes in the strike or dip of the main fault, and such cross faults or fractures lie in the moving block of the main fault system and indicate a change in strike or dip of the main fault. It has been found that each kind of change tends to produce definite effects and that careful study of the evidence can often suggest the exact type of change.

THOUGH the rapid revival of the copper market in the early twenties solved the most serious of the company's immediate postwar difficulties, a much more fundamental, long-range problem still remained. Mining is not like farming: the earth does not bring forth a new crop of gold, silver, lead, zinc, oil, or copper at every harvest time. Metal taken from the ground does not spring up again from the old roots like perennial flowers in a garden, or find renewal in freshly sown seed. No ore body, whatever its size or richness, is too big or too rich to escape ultimate exhaustion. When the war closed in 1918, Phelps Dodge had been mining copper from Bisbee, Morenci, and Nacozari over periods varying in length from ten to nearly forty years. During much of that time, the company's production had run from fifty million to as high as two hundred million pounds a year. Even the greatest of mines had to respond in time to such a drain. The experience gained in the development of an Operator Guidance System (OGS) for on-line process control and fault diagnosis in a commercial scale sintering process will be discussed in this paper. The OGS development started with the specification of feasible control and support tasks, eg ratio control scheme, mass balance calculations. Next, minimum requirements for fault diagnosis and process control were defined and the adequacy of existing instrumentation was assessed. The OGS knowledge base consists of both quantitative and qualitative diagnosis methods. Quantitative models based on fundamental engineering principle are used first and any gaps in such quantitative knowledge are then filled with heuristic rules. The diagnostic rules for the knowledge base was developed based on the knowledge acquired from experienced operators and operations engineers and validated with plant data. A real time reasoning program was written using C language and data base software. The OGS has a human-computer interface which is the primary means of interaction between the OGS and process operator. The OGS development has been successful in assisting operators in decision-making in their routine tasks. Further enhancement to the existing system is currently underway.

PROLOGUE Nowadays, where production costs and energy costs are increasing and at the same time requirements in fineness and purity of industrial mineral products are getting higher and higher, industry has to look for more efficient grinding systems and developments to produce these products more economically. Therefore lots of new developments in high energy jet mill pulverizing have been made. In the main, however, these developments involved more or less just the new principle of fluidized bed jet pulverizers but not the older spiral jet mill principle. In some cases, especially in the filler industry where laminar minerals are used and higher aspect ratios are required, the spiral jet mill principle has advantages in a better delamination of these minerals. To comminute minerals down to products with a d97 < 3 µm, the specific energy consumption increases up to 2,000 kWh/t – 3,000 kWh/t or even more, depending on the grindability of the mineral. So the production of these fine materials is quite an expensive task. But jet mill grinding is and will be the most favorable method to produce micro-products and in the near future nano-products, despite the high energy consumption.

La mayoría de unidades mineras o proyectos mineros en el Perú se localizan a lo largo de la cordillera de los Andes, donde las condiciones del relieve del terreno en algunos casos, hacen difícil la tarea de encontrar áreas con la suficiente capacidad para almacenar relaves convencionales (pulpa o espesados). En otros casos existe la necesidad de recuperar la mayor cantidad de agua, impactar la menor cantidad de área o la escasez de espacios para desarrollar proyectos de instalaciones de almacenamiento de relaves. Bajo estas condiciones la disposición del relave filtrado representa una buena alternativa para el almacenamiento de relaves en varios proyectos mineros.

THE causes that have formed fissures in the earth&apos;s crust, and the agencies that have converted them into metallic beds, are amongst the most important and interesting subjects that can engage the attention of the mining engineer or the scientist. They lie at the very base of the whole system of vein geology, and until something like a correct theory can be arrived at with regard to them, the science as such is necessarily very incomplete. The data for such a theory, owing to a lack of careful and systematic observations in countries pre-eminently metalliferous, like Mexico and the States of Central and South America, are almost entirely wanting. Doubtless there has been abundant speculation on the subject, from the earliest times down to the present, in every country where mining has been one of the leading industries of the inhabitants. Perhaps the theory of Elie de Beaumont more nearly approaches a satisfactory explanation than that of any contemporary authority. The most recent investigations, both in Europe and on this continent, tend to produce the conviction that the phenomena of metallic fissure lodes are in some way connected with, and- dependent upon, plutonic agencies-not, however, as the direct product of volcanic activity, but rather as the result of chemical agencies called into play through its aid. Active volcanoes generally produce only the well-known types of volcanic rocks, though, perhaps, well-marked cases can be shown where these contain ores of copper, etc., evidently derived from the same deepseated source as their hypogene gangue. Data mining and modelling of operational data involves the discovery of patterns in large datasets for future use in benchmarking and plant optimization. The modern pattern of discovery in large data sets involves statistical techniques, machine learning and new visualization tools. Former examples of data mining are revisited and presented in this document. INTRODUCTION A network of enthusiastic and active professionals is currently developing and maintaining several open source statistical software tools (packages) for data analysis (example Rstudio, Orange, Spyder, etc.). The advantages of the open source software philosophy are the fast development and testing of the solutions presented to the community. Books and support are available for each software application. Since each modern work activity generates massive amounts of data, it is attractive to learn and test those available tools considering that we are at the door of the new work revolution coined as “Mine 4.0”. Data mining involves collecting large datasets, the preparation and cleaning of a dataset (term named data wrangling), the uploading of the data to a database program capable of handling big datasets, the development of prediction models and the presentation of the results. Machine learning techniques help to develop mathematical models and algorithms that could be used to improve the performance on a specific task. Mine operations are producing an incredible amount of data each day and the need to analyze those results seems to be impossible due to the lack of time, as well as the lack of skills to investigate the data collected. If we add to this the traditional habit of working in silos, an additional challenge is to consolidate databases from different departments in search of trends that could help to optimize production.

Barite Worldwide barite production for 1985 decreased 1.3%, while US barite production increased 1.4%, according to US Bureau of Mines statistics. The increase in US production is attributed to heavy demand for oil and gas drilling during the first quarter and an unrealized heavy expected demand in oil and gas markets for the last quarter. Nevada accounted for 82.1% of the 807 kt (890,000 st) of barite produced in the US last year, according to the Bureau. Other producing states were California, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Montana, Tennessee, and Washington. In 1985, the US imported 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite and 64 kt (71,000 st) of ground barite. China led the way with 43.3% of the total. Imports from India accounted for 21.6%; Morocco, 15.5%; and Thailand, 5.6%. The 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of crude barite imported is an 18.8% increase over 1984. Apparent consumption of barite for 1985 was about 2.6 Mt (2.9 million st), a 15.7% increase from 1984. Due to very low drilling rig activity during the last quarter of 1985, actual consumption is probably less as crude barite inventories at mines and plants increased. According to the Bureau, 90% of barite consumed in 1985 was for the oil and gas market. Paints, rubber, glass, and other chemical uses consumed the other 10%. With the price of oil falling dramatically early in 1986, the outlook for oil and gas drilling looks to be significantly lower than 1985. This lower demand for barite, coupled with the high year-end inventories, should lower both imports and domestic production. Significant lower prices on imported barite are expected, especially from China, Morocco, and India. This also could further lower US production of barite this year.

Con la finalidad de responder a la necesidad de disminuir los impactos que puede causar la descarga, el proyecto busca un método de solución para el tratamiento de las efluentes con alto contenido de sílice de la empresa minera Llocllapampa. Se aplicó el uso de enmiendas orgánicas evaluadas a una escala de laboratorio y se obtuvieron resultados significativos: a mayor concentración de enmienda de almidón de maíz se obtuvo mayor porcentaje de remoción. Así, 60 g de almidón de maíz removieron, en un tiempo de 2 horas, un 88% del sílice en un volumen de 200 ml, mientras que en un tiempo de 1 hora, el mismo era removido en un 68%.

Este estudo avaliou a influência da adição de um composto inorgânico radiopacificador sobre as propriedades do cimento Portland Branco, a fim de viabilizar sua utilização como cimento endodôntico, semelhante ao MTA. Primeiramente, cimento Portland Branco foi caracterizado por difração de raios-X, os resultados mostram que a amostra possui composição semelhante ao MTA, com exceção de bismuto na composição do material. O bismuto, segundo a literatura, é o agente radiopacificador presente no cimento endodôntico na base de MTA. Posteriormente foi selecionado um composto inorgânico, devido seu potencial radiopacificador para continuação do estudo, sendo este o Carbonato de Bismuto (Bi2(CO3)). Neste estudo foram avaliadas as seguintes propriedades; Tempo de presa inicial, compressão dimensional, solubilidade e alteração diametral, sendo todos os ensaios seguindo de acordo com a norma ISO 6878:2001. Para a realização destes ensaios, foram utilizadas amostras contendo 15% de Carbonato de Bismuto em sua composição. Comparando os resultados obtidos neste estudo, foi verificado de acordo com a literatura, que cimento Portland Branco acrescido de 15% de Carbonato de Bismuto possui propriedades semelhantes às do MTA, sugerindo assim, a viabilidade de sua utilização como alternativa menos onerosa aos demais materiais comercializados.

O carvão vegetal, CV, é o componente individual com maior impacto no custo final de uma usina integrada. Diante desta realidade, foi desenvolvido um processo de carbonização contínua, uma tecnologia moderna que a diferencia das carbonizações tradicionais, permitindo que o CV produzido tenha melhores características físicoquímicas. Sendo assim, o desafio agora é encontrar condições operacionais adequadas para produzir em larga escala a um custo competitivo. Com base nisso, desenvolveu-se este trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar o desempenho de um altoforno, em condições reais de operação e em escala industrial, utilizando dois tipos de carvões (CVs): CV Referência e CV produzido por carbonização contínua (Carboval). Os principais parâmetros operacionais foram monitorados. O CV Carboval apresentou melhores resultados para as análises químicas e granulométrica, melhor permeabilidade no alto-forno e menor consumo bruto, demonstrando sua viabilidade técnica.

The magnetic properties of (NdDy)15Fe78B6 sintered magnets have been evaluated using powder prepared by Inert gas atomization. The atomized powder had a particle size distribution from 1 to approximate 1000 microns. The as atomized powders have been sieved into, coarse, intermediate, and fine fractions; magnetic properties were evaluated for the as produced powder and each fraction. A B, of 11.7 kG, a Hci of 11.0 kOe and a BHmax of 32.5 MGOe was -obtained on a sintered magnet made from the as-atomized powder. The magnet made from coarse powder exhibited a slightly higher B, of 12.1 kG, while that from fine powder showed a decrease in B, to 11.2 kG. Hydrogen decrepitation has been utilized to study its effect on the magnetic properties. Finally, cast ingots with a definite columnar structure have also been used to compare the magnetic properties of magnets of the same nominal, composition but of different alloy preparation process. Hydrogen decrepitation does not appear to improve the magnetic properties of magnets made from thin cast ingots. However, it does show a significant improvement in the Hci of magnets made from the atomized powders. Possible causes for the differences in the magnetic properties on magnets made from each process have been discussed in the paper.

In 1960 the management of International Salt Company made the decision that all waste material from the Watkins Glen plant would be stored in underground salt cavities. The cavities which they contemplated using had been depleted of salt to a point where continued operation would have impaired their structural stability. Originally, the waste to be disposed of included vacuum pan bleeds, cinders, contaminated salt and sewage. It was proposed that this material, in a slurry form, was to be injected into the salt cavity through one of the abandoned wells. Brine, displaced from the cavity, was to be recovered from an adjacent well and subsequently injected into the Cherry Valley limestone, This Cherry Valley limestone which underlies a large portion of north central New York contains a connate water with high concentrations of ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and the chlorides of calcium, magnesium and sodium. A number of questions were immediately raised on various aspects of the technical feasibility of the project. Of major concern was the buildup of insolubles adjacent to the bore of the injection well. Another pertinent question was the carryover in the displaced liquor of finely-divided, mechanically-suspended particles. Criticism was leveled at the inclusion of sewage. Engineering studies were started by the company&apos;s Mineral & Mines Development Department and on April 3, 1961 a preliminary feasibility report was issued.

O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o efeito da composição química e dos parâmetros de lingotamento convencional na ocorrência de trincas superficiais em barras laminadas. Faz-se um estudo dos parâmetros que podem influenciar na formação deste tipo de defeito e uma análise da morfologia de trincas. Com relação à composição química, foi alcançada redução na ocorrência de trincas superficiais em barras laminadas através da adição de Ti e redução do teor de Al no aço. Maior temperatura e menor velocidade de lingotamento correspondem à melhor combinação para alcançar redução da ocorrência desse tipo de defeito.
