John C. Greenway was responsible for much of my success in the seven years from what I called the end of my apprenticeship in exploration until I entered the Army in World War I. I first met Green- way on my return from Promontorio and, as he was replacing Powell, he was to be my boss. Even at first glance you couldn't help liking and trusting him. He was tall, well built, and erect-an old Yale athlete. After college he became a captain in the Rough Riders and a friend of Theodore Roosevelt, distinguishing himself in the Cuban campaign. He made good friends in all ranks of the Rough Riders, some later becoming leaders of industry and others following Greenway where-ever he went. After the Spanish War Greenway worked for iron mining companies around the Great Lakes and when the directors decided that Calumet and Arizona needed a new manager the ones who were also prominent in Oliver Iron Mining Co. selected Greenway It was a lucky choice for Greenway and for me. He became the best manager among those who ran the big copper mines He was open-minded in encouraging discussion and even opposition-until he made up his mind. Then, in military fashion, everyone must follow his decision without question. I think this is an essential of good management. Unfortunately a few did not feel this way and they had to leave. It was characteristic of those times that respect for the boss was so great that in the 16 years in which he was one of my best friends I, like all under him, always called him "Mr. Greenway." Soon after he arrived Greenway asked the leading mine operators in the southwest, Dr. Louis D. Ricketts and James S. Douglas, son of the Dr. James Douglas who had made Phelps Dodge great, to do special work for Calumet and Arizona. I found later that the object of the study was to determine the terms on which the half-dozen Warren District properties of Calumet and Arizona were to be joined in one

"Abstract - We present a new approach for the evaluation of the potential of emerald reserves in gem projects using beryllium (Be) mobility. The distribution of Be in the different phases of hydrothermally altered (albitized) black shale hosting Colombian emerald deposits indicates that Be mobility is associated with the breakdown of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide phases. The amount of Be that can be mobilized (~0.7 x 10-6 g/g; i.e., 0.7 ppm) may represent up to 18 wt% of the total Be contained in the black shale. A mass balance calculation applied to a well-constrained alteration zone of the Chivor mines, and based on the quantification of Be that can be mobilized under hydrothermal conditions, gives an estimate of the total gem reserves of these mines. Resumé - Une nouvelle approche, basée sur la mobilité du béryllium (Be) pour l’évaluation des réserves d’émeraude dans des projets d’exploitation de gemmes est présentée. La distribution du Be dans les différentes phases minérales de schistes noirs hydrothermalisés (albitisés) qui contiennent les gisements d’émeraude colombiens, indique que le Be mobilisable se trouve dans les oxyhydroxydes de fer et de manganèse. La quantité de Be potentiellement mobilisable (~0,7 x 10-6 g/g; soit 0,7 ppm) constitue jusqu’à 18% poids du Be global contenu dans le schiste noir. A utilização do wBN como ferramenta de usinagem pode eliminar a necessidade de retífica das peças. Portanto, neste trabalho, os experimentos realizados tiveram por objetivo o estudo e caracterização de compósitos à base de wBN, diboreto de titânio (TiB2) e alumínio (Al) para obtenção de pastilhas para usinagem. A composição utilizada para a investigação utilizou 70% de wBN. Os compósitos foram obtidos sob altas pressões e altas temperaturas via aplicação cíclica . As patilhas atingiram aproximadamente 4,5 mm de diâmetro, e altura de 4,0 mm. As amostras foram caracterizadas por ensaio de dureza Vickers, microscopia eletrônica de varredura, microscopia confocal e densidade. De forma geral, os melhores resultados foram para amostras com ciclos de um minuto cada, para os três ciclos, sendo pouco dependente do valor da pressão aplicada. Foi observada dureza maior que 17GPa, baixa porosidade e um valor de densidade aparente muito próxima à teórica.

Consideráveis esforços vêm sendo realizados para aumentar o desempenho das operações metalúrgicas e a qualidade do aço produzido. Nesse sentido, o papel das escórias no processamento do aço tem se tornado de muita importância. Com o objetivo da otimização das escórias, numerosos estudos têm sido conduzidos para uma melhor compreensão do efeito da composição química e demais propriedades da escória sobre a viscosidade, bem como, sua influência sobre o controle da limpeza inclusionária. Também se tem observado uma evolução das técnicas experimentais de laboratório que são empregadas para a investigação estrutural e medidas das propriedades físicas das escórias. Essa evolução e investigação são fundamentais, inclusive, para o ambiente prático da indústria do aço.

Debido que el subproducto en la etapa de lixiviación de las calcinas de zinc, alcanza un 18% de plomo y 40% de plata en la refinería de Cajamarquilla, es necesario la recuperación de sus elementos valiosos a través de un procedimiento hidrometalúrgico donde se obtengan extracciones en plomo y plata del orden de 85% respectivamente. En este sentido, el texto señala la solubilidad del plomo y la plata en una solución con excesos de iones cloruros y así someter al residuo a una lixiviación ácido clorurante de altas temperaturas y con presencia de un agente oxidante. Una vez obtenida la solución, se divide el plomo y la plata por cementaciones sucesivas con polvo de zinc. Finalmente, se determina la factibilidad del procedimiento para la extracción de los elementos valiosos del residuo y se disminuye los costos de la refinación del zinc.

No presente trabalho, analisaram-se três amostras metálicas ferrosas provenientes da Real Fábrica de Ferro de Ipanema (RFFI) outras três do sitio arqueológico de Sardinha (SAS) em busca de uma assinatura química dos processos produtivos destes objetos com base num modelo de regressão linear dos resultados de análise química de inclusões não metálicas proposto por Dillmann et al. [1]. Foram usadas técnicas de caracterização microestrutural associadas com microanálise EDS (Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) destas inclusões. Com os resultados de microanálise, foram construídos gráficos de relações entre os principais constituintes destas inclusões (%FeO versus %SiO2, %SiO2 versus %Al2O3, %Al2O3 versus %MgO e %CaO versus % K2O). Utilizou-se, então, a técnica de regressão linear (com reta passando e sem passar pela origem) para cada uma destas relações de modo a obter e avaliar o valor do coeficiente de determinação linear R2. Aplicou-se, ainda, o teste de t de Student para avaliar a hipótese de “reta passando forçosamente pela origem”, como proposto por Dillmann et al. [1]. Não foi possível obter a assinatura química dos processos produtivos, visto que a análise estatística dos dados mostrou uma incoerência no modelo utilizado por Dillmann et al. [1], que assumia que a regressão linear passava pela origem dos eixos.

Foram fabricados compósitos de matriz de cobre, reforçados com grafeno a partir da mistura de uma dispersão de óxido de grafeno com pó de cobre eletrolítico. A dispersão foi produzida pelo método de Hummers modificado e caracterizada por espectroscopia Raman e difração de raios X. Os compósitos foram fabricados pelo processo de metalurgia do pó convencional. Os pós de compósitos foram caracterizados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, os corpos de prova consolidados foram avaliados quanto a densificação a verde e do corpo sinterizado, e os corpos sinterizados foram submetidos a ensaio de compressão a fim de verificar a resistência dos compósitos.

Em um mercado dominado por tijolos de Al2O3-MgO-C, o revestimento de trabalho de panela de aço monolítico e CarbonFree se apresenta como uma tecnologia disruptiva para um novo patamar de qualidade do aço e eficiência energética. O presente estudo relata a motivação para a implementação do primeiro fundo de panela de aço com revestimento monolítico concretado in situ no Brasil, e apresenta uma análise preliminar dos resultados e vantagens observadas. Uma panela da Ternium Brasil foi revestida com refratários de Al2O3-MgO, e colocada em operação sem nenhuma necessidade de ajuste na operação da aciaria. A partir dos dados de processo e das medições a laser, calculou-se o desgaste do revestimento, bem como verificou-se a garantia de qualidade nos aços IF (interstitial free) e a maior preservação na temperatura do aço durante o refino secundário.
