Expanding markets and technological investigations now in progress for commercial production of titanium metal and alloys, as well as expanding uses for the oxide, have resulted in greater production, increased prices, and accelerated search for additional commercial occurrences of titanium minerals. For more than 50 years rutile has been used in moderate quantities in ceramics, in the production of ferrotitanium, as well as nonferrous titanium alloys. During the early 1930's, use of pure titanium dioxide was introduced as an ingredient of coatings for electric welding rods. For technical and economic reasons rutile was soon found to be as good or better for mild steel welding rods, and this use continues to account for a good share of the rutile sales in the U. S.

The coal picture in 1955 was much brighter than in 1954, when the tonnage produced dropped to the 1939 level. Bituminous coal and lignite production are expected to approach 465 million tons, against 392 million tons in 1954, an increase of about 19 pct. On the other hand, the production of anthracite declined about 7 pct to some 25 million tons. There was marked improvement in coal consumption in all industrial lines except railroads. At the end of November 1955 the largest consumer, electric power utilities, had used about 126 million tons, an increase of some 22 million tons over the previous year. Prior to 2001 Yallourn Mine has pumped approximately 1000 Megalitres of water per annum from aquifers beneath the mine floor in order to control aquifer pressures that were thought to have an influence on mine floor and permanent batter stability. In 2001 one of the deep aquifer pumps was shut down for five months in order to measure the aquifer recoveries. Prior to the shutdown a UDEC model was created in order to predict what level of recovery in the aquifer pressures would be critical to mine stability. The shutdown showed that the aquifer levels recovered and stabilised at levels that did not threaten the stability of the mine. The aquifers recovered to levels below the critical levels identified in the UDEC model.

This paper describes the risk management strategies adopted to control unstable slopes in the east open pit of the Daye iron ore mine. Extensive experience has been developed over the last 35 years in the management of pit wall instability resulting in the successful excavation and reinforcement of pit slopes over 350 m in height.

Dow Chemical Co.'s research in lignite gasification has required that the fuel be upgraded in terms of ash loading and the slagging character of the residual ash. Lignite beneficiation has been shown to substantially reduce the total ash loading and, in some cases, causes very significant reductions in slag viscosity. In support of this work, a slag viscometer was constructed and the viscous flow properties of lignite ash were run as a function of temperature and composition. The flow as a function of temperature was shown to be predictable from the chemical composition.

The results of a preliminary investigation undertaken to explore the possibility of treating potential in sulfide mineral flotation systems as an external variable are reported in this note. Two different methods were used to assess floatability. One involved measurement of contact angles at a mineral electrode in reagent solutions, and the other involved direct measurement of flotation recoveries in a Hallimond tube flotation cell that had been modified such that mineral particles were in electrical contact with a gold electrode. Fairly good correlation between the contact angles and flotation recoveries has been obtained.

The total production of petroleum in the Gulf Coast in 1927 was 54.541.180 bbl., .5.655.665 bbl. more than in 1926. The Texas total was 49.129.910 bbl. (Table 1) and the Louisiana tota1 5.411.270 bbl. (Table 2). Louisiana production decreased 278.028 bbl., compared with that of 1926. Spindletop produced nearly 44 per cent. of the Texas total. The effects of zirconium on the properties of sand cast Mg-rare earth metal alloys were discussed in detail in an earlier publication.' Longwall working in Britain developed to overcome problems arising from depth of seams causing roof and ventilation difficulties. This system became very widespread particularly in the thicker seams, where faces of up to one mile in length were not uncommon. In the thinner sections, in order to remain competitive, the longwall undercutting machine was developed. Following the development of the coal cutter, every other aspect of the face operation was examined and mechanized as it became a bottleneck to output and efficiency. The face system itself was modified and workings concentrated with the same objectives.

In each chapter an attempt has been made to describe the more common commercial mineral involved with the commodity and the processes used to recover and concentrate the minerals, as well as geographical areas where these processes are utilized.

A new type of rockbolting system, the self drilling rockbolt, has been studied to develop a 'single pass' bolt for use in rockbolt installation in underground engineering. This single pass bolt forms the basis of a Rapid Face Bolting system which will reduce the amount of time spent in securing a roof during the operation of a continuous miner in the development of a panel.The installation efficiency and anchorage tests were performed in the laboratory on the self drilling bolt and the traditional resin anchorage. bolt. Author Biography William Poole was born in Sydney, NSW in August 1868. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School. William spent two and a half years as a cadet in the Railway Construction Branch of the NSW Department of Public Works doing office and field work. He then undertook a civil engineering course at Sydney University. Following this he was employed for six years as assistant and resident engineer at the Water Conservation Branch, NSW and was in responsible charge of various field operations, surveys, river gaugings and works of constructions including a large timber weir and also a concrete weir on the Macquarie River, NSW. He then undertook a mining and metallurgical course at Sydney University and became a graduate (BE) with honours in civil engineering, mining engineering and metallurgy. He then spent four and a half years with BHP Co, one and a half years at Broken Hill in the mining and concentration works and three years at the smelting works in Port Pirie, SA, in the latter case he was metallurgist and night superintendent and during that time had responsibility and control at night of the blast furnaces and, during the last 15 months, of the whole of these large works. The author left the Port Pirie, SA works to assume the position of Director of the State School of Mines at Charters Towers and had responsible control of the establishment and also lectured in mining, surveying and structure. William Poole was honoured to hold membership in the following organisations: Assoc M Inst C E, L S of NSW, M Aus Inst M M, Assoc Inst M & M (London).

North Broken Hill Limited came into prominence as a producing mine at· the commencement of the present century, when a great many of the disabilities experienced in earlier mining operations th:rough lack of adequate stope filling had been overcome.The northern or narrower ore-body was first mined in the upper levels and, in the early stages, no great difficulty in mining was experienced. In depth, under the influence of its northerly pitch,. the wide southern ore-body entered the North mine between the 400 and 500-ft. levels. Owing to its flat dip and the relatively weak nature of the hanging wall and footwall, the value of close filling was recognized and this policy has been followed throughout the life of the mine. This feature undoubtedly contributed to the freedomfrom "creep" action to which some of the older mines had been subjected.The Broken Hill lead-zinc-silver ore-bodies occur as well defined replacements of favou:rable horizons, in intensely folded Pre-Cambrian sedimentaries. In the North mine two main replacement zones occur, the Gre being found where the beds are involved in a certain set of minor folds. The resulting ore-bodies are roughly elliptical in cross-section, the long axis of one being north-east of, and somewhat offset from the long axis of the other. The ore-bodies pitch eastwards at 40° and dip northwards at 60° in a fairly regularmanner. The southern Ore-body has an average length of 700 feet and an average width of 90 feet with a maximum width of 230 feet, whilst the nonhern ore-body on the lower levels averages 500 feet long and 40 feet wide.

Thermal conditions at depths of several k.i'-.r.,etres in hydrothermal systems are a major (actor controlling gold transport into the epithermal environment. Understanding of the coupling of thermal, metal and ligand (HZZ S) sources in the root zones of hydrothermal systems therefore becomes important for the application of tectonic and igneous petrochem- ical studies to regional scale precious metal exploration. The evaluation of favourable conditions in this source zone and application to explor- ation rests on a detailed knowledge of the gases, H2S, CO2 hydrocarbons and other trace components preserved in fluid inclusions. Recent developments in analytical techniques now permit examination of these components and the recognition of complex hydrocarbons in rluid inclusions from epithermal and other lydrothermal systems appears promising for ieoosit-source correlation.

Recently water insoluble alcoholic solutions of alkyl hydroxamic acid collectors have been shown to be particularly effective in the flotation of coarse feed material sampled from phosphate operations in Florida, North Carolina and Utah (Miller et al., 2000). The experimental results indicate that high separation efficiencies can be achieved in single stage flotation with these new collectors. In some cases the concentrate grade reached 34% P2O5 with 93% recovery from single stage bench scale flotation experiments. Critical aspects of the composition and structure of these new collectors are discussed with respect to their effectiveness in phosphate flotation. The wetting characteristics at fluorapatite, francolite, dolomite and quartz surfaces are being investigated with the new collector. Finally, other surface chemistry considerations in the development of these new collectors for phosphate flotation are discussed.
