The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the performance of portable power cables under transient conditions. This research had a twofold purpose: (1) to define the thermal characteristics of electrically overloaded trailing cables, and (2) to conceptualize electrical protection for cables that allows maximum cable efficiency without diminishing electrical safety in underground mines. Several tasks were undertaken in support of these goals during the 3-year research effort. Overload tests ranging from 2 to 12 times rated ampacity were conducted in the Bureau's Mine Electrical Laboratory. Two thermal models of energized type G-GC trailing cables were constructed, one based on thermodynamic theory and the other using empirical data from previous Bureau load tests. The empirical model was then incorporated into an interactive computer program that can assist designers and approvers of mining machines in selecting the appropriate size trailing cable. This program can be the basis for a cable protection system that ensures that cables are not the source of fires, ignitions, burns, or explosions underground.

Bureau of Mines studies were made on the sensitivity of several ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) mixtures to bullet impact. The experimental work was done with one military rifle and two high-velocity sporting rifles with a variety of ammunition. For the three rifles used, the order of efficiency in initiating detonation in AN-FO mixtures was 220 Swift >300 Weatherby Magnum >30-&apos;06. The velocity of the bullet was found to be a decisive factor in the initiation. The sensitivity of various materials studied increased as follows: Clay-coated prills with 4 percent oil <fresh surfactant-coated prills with 4 or 6 percent oil <surfactant-coated prills with 4 or 6 percent oil and aged 270 days <crushed prills with 6 percent oil <very low-density, surfactant-coated prills (micronized), with 4 percent oil.

In December 2010, a trial of borehole radar technology was conducted to test the usefulness of the technique in better refining the position and geometry of narrow vein orebodies away from the primary data sources of drilling and mapping of development excavations. This paper summarises the reasons why the technique was applied, describes the testing methods selected and summarises the outcomes of the trial.Poor reconciliations of recovered metal from a section of an orebody at Jundee mine site, Western Australia, led to an investigation that identified insufficient understanding of the geometry of a narrow vein orebody as a potential cause. This orebody was situated between mapped development excavations and away from surrounding drill holes. Borehole radar was identified as a possible technique that could supply information on vein location and continuity away from other data sources allowing more accurate orebody modelling and subsequent stope optimisation.A borehole radar instrument (10 - 100 MHz frequency) was inserted into pairs of purpose-drilled boreholes on either side of relatively well-constrained mineralisation and the radar reflection data was collected. This process was repeated in five locations across the mine to represent the most common geological settings, lithologies and orebody varieties encountered at Jundee to determine the suitability of applying the technique in each of these settings. Collected, processed and interpreted radar data was compared to other geology data collected independently for verification and interpretation.Conclusions drawn from the analysis were that the technique could effectively determine the following features of the mineralised veins in the majority of test environments: geometry of veins, magnitude of offsets where structures intersect and orientations of planar structures with short strike length. The technique was very useful in selecting the appropriate structural interpretation where available data could lead to multiple, equally likely, interpretations.CITATION:Kemp, C and Morgan, G, 2012. The categories of interpass time encountered in hot rolling are characterized. These are shown to fall into three broad categories: short (in rod rolling); intermediate (in strip processing); and long (in plate schedules). The effects of interpass time on recrystallization and carbonitride precipitation are described, and particularly on the interaction between these two mechanisms. The interactions, in turn, determine the final microstructure produced as well as the mechanical properties.

The treatment of oxidized residues of zinc with high iron content continues to present a technical challenge in both the steel and zinc industries. Two main problems are commonly identified and include high treatment costs and environmental concerns about contaminated, iron-bearing residuals. A new approach to this problem is described in which selective separation of the iron and zinc into salable products may be potentially feasible. The waste material is first leached to give a solution having an approximate concentration of 110 g/l Zn, 15 g/1 Fe and 40 g/1 H2SO4 and other impurities such as Pb, Cd, Cu and Sb. A suitable organic, such as D2EHPA, is used to load the majority of the iron. The aqueous phase is then acceptable for zinc electrowinning after standard solution purification. The novel step in the flow sheet is the efficient recovery of the ferric iron from the organic solvent using a solid metal to reduce the iron to the ferrous state. The Fe+2 is easily stripped into an aqueous phase in a relatively pure form, suitable for use in water treatment. Process parameters and possible flow sheet designs are described and discussed.

DC plasma-arc technology using a hollow graphite electrode (cathode) has been successfully implemented in the primary metallurgical industry in South Africa up to the 30 MW scale. Mintek has applied its expertise base, established over the past fifteen years, to testing the treatment of metallurgical wastes such as carbon- and stainless-steel plant dusts, lead- and zinc-containing slags, and residues from the base-metal industry. Favourable results have been achieved, and disposable products were produced. The evaluation of numerous wastes indicates that recovery of zinc as metal gives the best economic return from these sources. Direct recovery via a splash condenser or electrolytic zinc extraction from fume are the two preferred alternatives under review. In both instances dehalogenation is an important issue, but can be achieved by suitable treatment processes. The Enviroplas technology provides a flexible, commercially viable approach to the treatment of a wide variety of wastes. Mintek, together with its associate Pyromet CC, are installing a plasma- arc pilot-plant facility with both an ISP lead-splash condenser of about 5 t/d condensed zinc capacity and a combustion chamber to burn zinc vapour to zinc oxide. This will demonstrate the suitability of the Enviroplas technology for treating specific metallurgical wastes, so that customized industrial plants can be engineered based on large-scale testwork.

The Cadia Hill concentrator at Newcrest’s Cadia Operations has undergone several modifications and upgrades to treat an increased throughput rate of harder ore from the Cadia East block cave mine.Subsequent to the commissioning of the expanded circuit, the flotation cleaner block has undergone a systematic optimisation programme tackling all facets of circuit operation. Antimony has been utilized by mankind for thousands of years. However, due to recent environmental concerns, antimony is often considered to be an impurity element, Since antimnoy is commonly found in precious metal refractory ore bodies, extraction is essential. The Sunshine Mine in Kellogg, Idaho has recovered antimony from its precious metal tetrahedrite deposits since the 1940&apos;s. A plant was initially constructed as a primary antimony source during World War II. This facility also decreased the downstream smelting penalty for the silver copper-lead concentrate and provided an industrial commodity from a potential environmental nuisance.&apos; This paper describes the Sunshine antimony processing- facility. Specifically, the relevant process chemistries involved in concentrate leaching, metal electrowinning, and sodium antimonate production will be discussed. In addition, ongoing areas of research to improve unit operations and treatments implemented to meet environmental&apos; discharge requirements will be covered.

A team of researchers at the University of Kentucky, working under a USBM contract, developed over 65 simulation exercises for teaching and testing problem-solving and decision-making skills to miners and mining engineers. These skills involve both improving judgment and decision making in mine emergencies and enhancing the learning of real-world engineering design principles. The exercises are ideally suited for either latent image format or for computer-aided instruction. Exercise features are summarized, the structure and field testing of typical exercises described, and sample frames of individual exercises presented. Empirical data are summarized that describe the effectiveness of using these short, time-efficient performance tasks that simulate real problems and that provide immediate corrective feedback for teaching and testing critical skills. Indigenous peoples are a unique stakeholder because their growing legal rights to lands and resources can often determine a project’s outcome. A project will only be successful if it is able to obtain the legal permits, withstand any judicial reviews, and gain and maintain the social license to operate. The dramatic fluctuation in metal and energy prices in the last few years is causing mining companies to consider alternative analytical methods for mine design and valuation. The goal is to improve insight into unforeseen changes in the economic and project environment and to design projects that take advantage of management's ability to respond to these changes. Such flexibly managed projects will contain value that cannot be measured using traditional engineering economic approaches, further motivating the used of alternative, modern valuation methods. This paper considers the valuation of an uneconomic low-grade resource at an open pit gold mine using two of the most popular modern valuation methods, Dynamic Discounted Cash Flow and Real Options. Our analysis demonstrates that the conventional valuation method may incorrectly represent the value and risk attached to mining this type of resource because it is unable to recognize management's ability to respond to future events in a manner that minimizes losses and exploits advantageous business conditions. The results of this paper highlight the importance of recognizing flexibility and business uncertainty in both mine design and valuation.

This paper deals with the minimization of ventilation costs for the controlled-flow mine ventilation network. Cost elements considered include the cost of power and the fixed cost of the fans. The problem is modeled in a mixed-integer programming format and solved via the branch and bound method. Computational experience with sample problems is discussed.

The extraction of cobalt from synthetic pressure acid leach solutions of nickel laterite ores by the direct solvent extraction route using ESPLIM is reported. It first explored the use of gaseous ammonia as pH modifier and then the variables that affect the dispersion of the aqueous phase in the organic phase such as ionic strength, viscosity of the phases, initial droplet size, etc. were explored so that phase hold-up and thus extraction can be effectively controlled. The results show that the technique allows better control of phase dispersion circumventing one of the main weaknesses of conventional solvent extraction.

Every underground coal mine in the United States must deploy and operate a wireless communication and tracking system. This paper addresses the reliability and availability of an installed tracking system and the communications infrastructure that supports it. A particular interest is the requirements for the systems to operate continuously without failure after a mine disaster for 96 hours, and the requirements in the MINER Act for the tracking systems to be ?calculated to be serviceable? and the communications systems ?redundancy?. These requirements imply a certain reliability and availability. This paper describes a quantitative way to assess these systems requirements, using the tools that are available and commonly used by the Reliability, Maintainability, & Availability community.

Problems caused by water discharge from surface mine ventilation shafts can be significant and are usually unforseen. The discharged water is often hyper-saline or acidic and can cause environmental degradation over a wide radius. It can also lead to recurring power pole fires and primary fan breakdowns. A range of solutions to the water discharge problem has been implemented in many Australian mines. In most cases the solutions have been ad hoc, with the overall cost and effectiveness varying tremendously. This paper reviews and contrasts the practicality and effectiveness of the various available remedial options.

Mine seismicity is one of the most difficult geotechnical risks to manage in seismically active mines. There are currently some established empirical and statistical methods that provide quantitative measures for seismic hazard assessment in operating mines. However, these methods are mostly suitable for quantifying the current or historical seismic hazard and often cannot be directly used to forecast the future hazards. Numerical modelling is the only analytical tool that can capture the level of complexities required for a meaningful analysis of mine seismicity and therefore to facilitate a reliable forecast of future hazards. However, there is currently no widely accepted and established guideline and methodology for analysing and forecasting mine seismicity using numerical modelling. This paper first provides a background on previous published studies on this subject and then outlines the key aspects that can affect the reliability of the forecasting for mine seismicity. These aspects include a) processing of historical seismic data, b) selection of suitable numerical modelling approach, c) Post-processing and interpretation of the model outputs. A case study is then presented for the Gwalia Deeps Mine where a new framework was developed to forecast future mine seismicity. High-quality seismic data for a period of five years was used for back-analysis and comparisons with the numerical modelling outputs. After development of the method, the future seismicity was forecast for the next 12 months and the actual seismicity was monitored against the forecast during this period. Results of this study shows promising potential for the proposed framework to be applied more routinely and at other mine sites. However, more validations are required at Gwalia Deeps mine as the mine proceeds to deeper levels. In addition, the method needs more improvements and should be tested and validated at other mining operations before it can be established as a proven method. Several reactive metal purification processes using molten salts generate effluent from which significant quantities of metal can be recovered prior to discardinglrecycling the salt. A Salt-scrub [SS] process has been applied where the reactive metals are recovered as a metal-gallium alloy by calciothermic reduction of the metal compounds. The SS alloy compositions were produced by mixing, pressing and sintering the metal-powders. Measurement of metal recovery has been studied for cerium, silver, tin and lead. The process has been optimized for variables such as the metal quantity per kg of effluent salt, amount of excess calcium over stoichiometry, stirring rate and time and holding time at reduction temperature. Over ninety-seven percent metal recovery has been obtained under optimized conditions. The development of an alloy for efficient Salt Scrub processing reduces a major contaminated waste disposal problem as well as recovering the valuable reactive metal. Surrogate metals have been used in this work to study the behavior of plutonium.

Modern concrete technology emphasizes the basic qualities required of an acceptable aggregate: it must be clean, sound, homogeneous, and of a size gradation resulting in a concrete of the desired physical qualities at a minimum cost. In the case of coarse aggregates, crushing, scrubbing, and screening will usually provide the required material, although beneficiation is often necessary in order to eliminate unsound or deleterious fractions. Beneficiation is also applicable to fine aggregates,( but the processes most often employed are washing, classification, and dewatering.

Many investigators believe that column flotation cells offer significant advantages over standard mechanical machines for the flotation of fine particles. However, because of their unique design and operation, conventional techniques for flotation cell scale-up and design cannot be applied to columns. In an attempt to help alleviate this problems a population balance model based on first principles has been developed for fine particle flotation in a column. Two different terms have been considered in the model, i.e., transport and rate. Transport terms, incorporating fluid flow and bouyancy, are used to describe the movement of air bubbles, unattached particles and bubble-particle aggregates along the length of the column. Rate terms, which describe the bubble-particle attachment process, have been derived from first principle considerations. Because the model is based on first principles, it can be useful for the design, control, optimization and scale-up of column flotation cells.

Dimethylglyoxime reacts with nickel in a buffered ammonical-citrate solution containing the detergent ?Aquet? and hyroxylamine-hydrochloride. The resulting nickelous dimethylglyoxime is extracted with xylene. Visual comparison with standards permits the estimation of from 50 to 10,000 ppm of nickel. Soil, rock, or sediment may be decomposed by digestion with (1-3) nitric acid, allowing about 70 determinations per man-day to be carried out. With minor modifications to the above procedure, sediment and soil may be semi-quantitatively analyzed for nickel at the sample site. The chemical equipment is easily portable and the analysis extremely rapid because the buffer, dime thylglyoxime and xylene are added simultaneously to the sample and no heating is required. The sensitivity varies with the "availability" of the nickel ions; under favorable conditions, one may obtain a positive test for as little as 10 micrograms in soils and sediments. This procedure is similar to one, for the field determination of heavy metals described elsewhere by the author.
