Tanzania is a country with a variety of mineral deposits, including metallic minerals, gemstones, mineral fuels, industrial minerals, and critical minerals. This study provides an overview of mining legal framework, mineral occurrence and production, challenges in the mining sector, and government initiatives. The aim is to demonstrate the development of the mining sector in Tanzania and explore the potential for further mining investment in the country. The mineral production data showed generally increasing trends over the years, for example, gold production increased from 42 tonnes in 2018/2019 to around 50 tonnes in 2023/2024. Despite the growth, the mining sector encounters several challenges, including a lack of detailed geological information on mineral deposits, inadequate infrastructures in some remote mining sites, the existence of informal artisanal miners, and mineral smuggling. The Tanzanian government has introduced several initiatives to address these challenges, including carrying out the highresolution airborne geophysical survey to increase geological information in some areas, the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining, establishing mineral markets to combat mineral smuggling, and encouraging mineral value addition within the country.

The rapid development of the global alumina and aluminum industry is straight coupled with the demands and the needs of these materials. Nowadays, the only well-known accessible resources to produce alumina and aluminum are bauxite ores. But bauxite ores are limited, and the remaining exploitable reserves do not have high contents in alumina. In countries where there is little or no bauxite reserves or where the recovery of existing bauxite ores to produce alumina with the Bayer process are not economic, alternative resources for alumina have been explored. The most attractive resources for replacing bauxites are aluminosilicate clay minerals and coal fly ash. The important processes developed for the recovery of alumina from these sources are acid leaching and alkaline leaching processes. The acid leaching is known as the most efficient in which thermal and mechanical activation are included for improving the performance of the process. The objective of this review is to give a comprehensive insight on the production of the alumina from thermally or mechanically activated clays and coal fly ash by hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid leaching processes.

The effect of detonator placement on rock fragmentation by blasting was studied in the Kevitsa open-pit mine. Considering rock mass properties, explosives properties, and blast parameters, a comprehensive analysis of 37 production blasts confirms that the middle detonator yields finer fragmentation than the bottom detonator in the full range of investigated sizes. Meanwhile, using the LS-DYNA code, a bench model with a single blasthole was built in a three-dimensional setting. A single detonator placed at two different positions—the middle and bottom—of the explosive column was analyzed in this study. By analyzing principal stress states on the plane through the blasthole axial and vertical to the bench face, the numerical results show that the middle detonator creates a stress concentration area near the bench face characterized by triaxial tension, while the bottom detonator does not. Furthermore, the middle detonator generates a larger stress concentration area with biaxial tension near the bench face than the bottom detonator. Considering that triaxial and biaxial tensions are more favorable to fragmentation than uniaxial tension, it can be concluded from simulation results that these areas with triaxial tension and biaxial tension in the middle detonator are a significant factor contributing to achieving better fragmentation, compared to the bottom detonator. The middle detonator position has replaced the bottom detonator position in the Kevitsa mine.

A facetious title was purposely given this talk, so that a formal paper would not be expected. TWO or three days ago, while discussing with Mr. Dickinson some of the details of the dust explosion demonstrations we are planning for this coming Saturday, I remarked that we would like to have as many people as possible see some samples of 20 and 200 mesh dust, so they would more fully understand just what was causing the explosions. Mr. Dickinson requested that I bring samples and screens and in this informal manner, give you all a ".close-up" of coal dust which is considered in Explosion Hazard reports. While sampling mines, for road, rib, and roof dust, in connection with safety service and hazard reports which the Bureau of Mines Engineers make at the request of coal operators, I have often been assisted by under- ground mine officials or other men of many years experience and on almost every occasion, while we were carefully brushing the very fine dust from timbers or coal surfaces, they would make some remark such as: "never had noticed this kind of dust, didn't know it was here", or "well, that's the first time I really understood what all 'this dust talk was about." Such experience makes me believe that the much published terms, 20 mesh and 200 mesh are just numbers to the great majority of both miners and operators. We are now going to have lesson one in the primer of coal dust explosions and I want to say, in all sincerity that a complete course in the hazards of mining is deserving of a place in the curriculum of the best mining schools of this country. Sample No. 1 is fine coal and dust and is a fair sample of what can be found every where in rooms and entries of a mine, as it is too small to be gathered up with a shovel and is left in the ordinary mining at the faces and is spilled along the entries in haulage. In this you will see some quarter inch coal, much eighth and sixteenth inch coal, in fact those are the sizes I find many people have in mind when they are asked about the dust made in mining. Although the sizes mentioned are the ones which seem to almost entirely make up this sample, such is not the case, for from 10 to 20% of such a sample will usually pass this 20 mesh screen and in Sample No. 2 we have 20 mesh dust. Result of many tests, supports .the statement of the coal mining division of the Bureau, that it is quite probable that coal over 20 mesh does not take part in any but the most violent of explosions and that all dust under 20 mesh may take part in any explosion. The largest particles in this sample will not be over .03 inches in their largest dimension and a pound of dust to a foot of average heading is very easily found in most every mine I have visited and usually a great deal more can be readily gathered up. It was .found early that the finer the dust the more dangerous it was for a given coal. So for the early explosion tests conducted by the Bureau a commercial pulverizer was used and it turned out a 20 mesh dust of which about 75% would pass 200 mesh. Some men question whether the ordinary mining methods made such a dust and so doubted the explosibility of the dust in their own mines. The question was well taken, and hundreds of dust samples were taken by the field men of the Bureau to determine the kind of dust being made in all methods of mining and all classes of coal. The result of such sampling showed some coals. resisted breakage more than others and that actual mine road dust, through 20 mesh, would show from 10 to 20% through 200 mesh, and for actual rib and roof dust through 20 mesh, they would get from 20 to 40% of 200 mesh dust. Introduction In recent years - even months - the number of articles on computers has increased rapidly. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a computer-related article. The article usually explains how the computer will change our lives. Many of us have some concern about the nature and type of change. For most of us, though, the problem is lack of information and understanding about how computers work. In other words, how do we make cost-effective decisions about computers? This three-part series will explain, simply, what a microcomputer is, how it works, and how to decide if you need one. This first article will define terms and briefly discuss areas where computerization might be economic. The second article will discuss geology and mining applications. The third article will discuss plant, administrative, and geotechnical areas as well as the future of software development in the minerals industry. Terms and Concepts All computers have input and output devices and a central processing unit (CPU). Information - instructions and data - is communicated to the computer by means of input devices. These instructions to the computer are converted into language that the computer understands. This causes the instructions to be carried out in the CPU. The result of these operations is translated back into language that we understand. This information is then sent to output devices such as printers and video display tubes. Traditionally, peripherals were devices separate from the main-frame (the CPU and memory) and were used to input, output, and store information or instructions. Today, peripherals perform the same functions though they may be housed in the same cabinet as the CPU and memory. Historically, peripherals included all input and output devices not part of the mainframe. Input devices include keyboards, magnetic tape, and card readers. Tapes and disks are input as well as output devices. Output devices are printers, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes), and any mass storage device capable of storing data when directed to do so by the computer or the program. In fact, any mass storage device that can give the computer data when requested is an input device. Mass storage devices include floppy disks (thin, round sheets of plastic covered by metal particles), and hard disks. The latter are thicker and more densely coated with metal particles. This allows much more information to be stored. Another type of mass storage is magnetic tape. Its type and size varies widely. Processing and Storage Any computer understanding must include how instructions and data are processed and stored. Information is stored as a positive or a negative field known as a "bit." There are eight bits in a byte. The bits can be represented as either a one or a zero. Thus the code for a byte representing the numeral one is 00110001. The byte representing the letter A is 01000001. These codes are from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). ASCII defines the standard set of characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters. The computer's memory has allocated locations where instructions as well as incoming information can be stored. All information and instructions are stored as binary numbers bit by bit - zeros and ones. The amount of data that can be stored is referred to as either thousands or millions of bits or bytes. The letter "K" is used to designate one thousand units. The letter "M" is used to mean one millon units (one meg). "The increasing amount of portable devices and their fast obsolescence generates an increasing quantity of discarded batteries. The recycling process of discarded batteries allows the recovery of metals for further use and avoids the contamination of soil and water. Even though there are several researches on the topic, few papers focus on mixed batteries. The purpose of this work is to characterize a mass of collected mixed batteries and study the hydrometallurgical process of recycling. The specific leaching parameters studied were pH, temperature and reduction potential. The specific goal was testing the selectivity of pH for leaching each metal. The results show that the optimal leaching occurs in acid solutions with negative pH at IM of sulfuric acid and at room temperature (25°C).IntroductionThe increasing portability of electronic devices in the past century along with their fast obsolescence produce tons of discarded materials yearly that could be recycled generating new materials for the industry. For example, metals such as cobalt and nickel, that are worth respectively US$ 30.00 and US$ 16.10 per kilogram[l,2] are disposed in urban trash yearly, which means that millions of dollars are thrown away instead of being recovered and reused[3].Besides the obvious fact that the society is throwing money away, most of these metals are toxic for the environment and all mammals, so when badly stored after use they can be found contaminating ground water which will contaminate the entire lifecycle. Some of these metals can cause cancer, serious lung problems and have bioaccumulative properties [4] resulting in lower productions of natural products and maybe death for consumers.So in compliance to new regulations such as the National Solid Residue Politic (PNRS) and the CONAMA-Resolution N°401 from November of 2008[5]- (that follows similar restrictions and regulations as the European directives) all those urban and electronic wastes need to be correctly disposed and treated before being thrown away on local dump sites.In Brazil the national rate of garbage recovery is around 70%, which only 5% is properly recycled, accordingly to the research of the UFSC, also electronic waste grows at 5% per year [6]The present study was motivated by the fact that recycling processes for batteries are not spread through the country and by the fact that most papers do not try to recycle a mixed mass of batteries, but a specific mixture which does not represent the composition of traditional household wastes."

A custom gold and silver plant is one that treats ores for a fee. Usually such plants are located in mining districts and treat local ores. Ores of milling grade generally can stand only moderate transportation charges. These plants are scattered throughout the West. Most plants now doing a custom business originally were built by mining companies to handle ores from their own mires. As excess mill capacity became available ores from neighboring properties were treated, vainly as an accommodation. Later, as their own ore bodies became depleted, the mills were operated entirely on a custom basis. A few plants pull ore from their own mines only when the supply of custom ore is insufficient to keep the mill operating. Some of the present custom plants were built for custom work alone. Although built originally to treat the ores of the Golden Cycle mine, the Golden Cycle plant at Colorado Springs, Colo., soon became a custom mill and has been operating successfully for many years. It is the largest gold mill in the Western States and. treats Cripple Creek ores, from which most of its tonnage still comes. The plant is equipped to treat a great variety of ores and receives shipments from a wide area. It competes with smelters in Colorado, as it has a roasting plant to prepare sulphide concentrates for treatment in its cyanide plant. Most custom mills, however, are not adapted for more than one or two kinds of ore. Gold occurs in its ores both in the metallic state (free) and locked up in sulphides. It also occurs in a few places, notably at Cripple Creek and a few other Colorado districts, as tellurides. Mien the gold occurs in the native state, the ores is said to be free-milling and can be recovered by amalgamation. Usually, however, some subsidiary treatment is required to make a satisfactory extraction. Amalgamation generally was followed by tabling in the earlier mills; at present, flotation has replaced tables at many places. As depth is reached in raining and the workings extend below the oxidized zone the character of the ore usually changes, or, as the miners say, "it gets base". Since the advent of flotation, the average recovery of gold in base ores has been improved-greatly. Cyanidation is applied to some types of both gold and silver ores. The recovery by cyanidation is in general considerably higher than by other methods in vogue and in addition has the advantage of making a finished product which can be sold directly to the mist, thus obviating smelting charges on concentrate and discounts

"Commercial stainless steels (SUS304L and SUS430) were subjected to equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) at room temperature to a total strain of 2.3 to 9.2. For each type of stainless steel, it was shown that the sample processed by ECAE showed higher room temperature strength than the as-quenched sample. This is probably due to the heavily worked structure. On the other hand, both strength and elongation of the ECAE processed SUS430 were increased by annealing at 773K. It is likely that higher strength is attributed to both the heavily worked structure and fine substructures. It is also likely that higher elongation is attributed to the fine substructures. It is concluded that ECAE is available for improving the room temperature strength of commercial stainless steels.INTRODUCTIONEqual channel angular extrusion ( ECAE ) is a technique that provides the repetitive deformation and allows to high intensity of deformation. With this procedure, a sample is pressed through a channel that has an equal cross section but bent at an angle of ?> [1-2]. Shear strain is introduced when a sample passes through the bending point of the channel. Repetitive processing is feasible because the cross-sectional dimension of a sample has no change during processing. To date, many reports have described that ECAE is available for the fabrication of fine-grained materials [3-14]. On the other hand, an ECAE processed sample can achieve high intensity of deformation through repetitive deformation. According to the equation given by Segal [ 2 ], a strain of about 1 is introduced in each pass through die if the angle ? is 90 deg.It is well known that high tensile strength can be achieved in metallic materials through work hardening [15]. It is also known that metallic materials with fine grain size show high strength [16]. Hence, it is expected that ECAE is available for strengthening method in metallic materials. In the present paper, we will report the mechanical properties of stainless steels processed by ECAE. As samples, SUS304L austenite stainless steel and SUS430 ferritic stainless steel were chosen. Each alloy has a single-phase structure (fee or bee) and shows no phase transformation, so that transformation strengthening cannot be applied. Hence, a heavy cold work such as ECAE may be effective for strengthening of this stainless steel. Annealing was conducted for the ECAE processed SUS430 to vary its microstructure. Then, the effect of annealing on the strength of the ECAE processed SUS430 was also investigated."

"The Mount Todd gold mine is located approximately 50 km (31 miles) north of the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia just off the Stewart Highway, and was operated in the 1990s until 2000 (Fig. 1). After cessation of mining operations, meteoric precipitation and acid rock drainage (ARD) associated with surface water runoff continued to report to the retention ponds across the mine site. In 2000, the mine site entered receivership and the NT government became responsible for the care and maintenance program. In 2006, Vista Gold Corp. (as Vista Gold Australia) acquired the rights to resume exploration on the mine site without the financial responsibility of the environmental liability. In January 2007, Vista Gold assumed the care and maintenance activities on behalf of the NT government, with the environmental liability remaining with the NT government, with the goal of reinitiating mining operations. A critical path component of the planned upgrades to the existing mine/milling facilities and infrastructure was the development of a cost effective treatment and dewatering program for the approximately 11 GL (2,900 million gal) of ARD stored in the Batman Pit (RP3), which has a maximum capacity of approximately 12 GL (3,200 million gal). The Batman Pit must be dewatered in order for Vista Gold to restart mining activities. The Batman Pit Lake had reached a maximum water depth of 104 m (341 ft) when Vista Gold initiated water level monitoring. It is important to note that the ARD water in the Batman Pit has been pumped into it from 2000 to 2012 under an NT government-approved environmental control program.The Batman Pit has virtually no connection to the local ground water regime due to the intensive silicification that accompanied the mineralizing event. In October 2012, just prior to treatment, the pit lake profile was characterized by uniform acidic pH (approximately pH 3.2) and oxic conditions (dissolved oxygen greater than 7 mg/L with depth (Fig. 2). The temperature decreased by approximately 4 °C (39 °F) between the lake surface and approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep, and remained near constant with increasing depth. This temperature difference is believed to be associated with an existing shallow mine bench at approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep around the perimeter of the pit. Similarly, electrical conductivity, an estimate of total dissolved solids, decreased by about 85 microSiemens per centimeter (µS/cm) from 2,800 to 2,715 µS/cm between 10 and 20 m (33 and 66 ft)."

"The H.B. Mine, a zinc-lead operation of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited (Cominco), is in south central British Columbia, on Sheep Creek, a west-flowing branch of the Salmon River. It is 3 miles by road from B.C. highway No. 6, 30 miles south of Nelson, B.C., with an excellent highway connection to the smelter city of Trail, 35 miles from the mine. The nearest permanent settlement is the village of Salmo, 7 miles distant by road. The mine is situated along a belt containing other important zinc-lead deposits, including those of the Canadian Exploration Company, 3 miles to the south, and the Reeves MacDonald mine, 9 miles distant again to the southwest.Deeply oxidized outcrops were located in 1907 on the north side of Sheep Creek valley by two prospectors named Horton and Benson. The property was given the name H.B., after the two discoverers, and there commenced a long and intermittent series of mining operations designed mainly to develop and extract oxidized lead-zinc ore. In 1925 a determined attempt was made by a British syndicate to develop a large tonnage of sulphide ore, but this ended in failure after some 3,000 feet of lateral development had been done. In 1927 Cominco acquired the mine, but it lay idle until 1946 when a geological study was followed by a program of surface drilling which encountered extensive sulphide mineralization. An underground development program revealed more details of the deposit, and sufficient ore was found to warrant construction of a 1,000-ton mill. Mine preparation and mill construction were completed by early 1953, but production was deferred due to low metal prices. The mine was finally brought into production early in 1955."

"Silicon and its binary alloys have several applications in metallurgical, chemical, photovoltaic and semiconductor industries. Silicon goes to its liquid state within its production, refining and when it is alloyed with other elements. Therefore, the characterization of silicon melts thermodynamics is important and useful. The liquidus and activities in several silicon binary systems have been recently calculated by the application of two liquidus constants, which were established using the experimentally determined liquidus data. In the present study, the thermodynamic properties of six silicon binary melts, which are simple eutectics, are calculated by analytical approaches. In this case, the changes in the partial and integral Gibbs free energies and enthalpies of mixing are calculated and compared with the experimental data in literature. The enthalpies are calculated by two methods and the calculation results are compared to the data from the literature. It is shown that thermodynamic properties of silicon binary melts can be accurately predicted without the use of complicated thermodynamic software.IntroductionSilicon and its alloys have several industrial applications. Silicon is used for making aluminium-silicon alloys to produce cast parts, mainly for automotive industry. Silicon in the form of ferro-silicon is used to deoxidize and alloy steel and cast iron. The photovoltaic (PV) industry has had a rapid growth in the recent years and silicon is the dominant material used for the fabrication of solar cells. Silicon is primarily produced through carbothermic reduction of quartz in electric arc furnaces and the produced metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) contains around 1 wt% impurities. It is further refined to produce solar grade silicon (SoG-Si) with above 99.9999 wt% Si to fulfil the chemical requirement for PV application. Since molten silicon is processed all along the metallurgical route, obtaining fundamental thermodynamics knowledge about silicon melts is valuable for the related industries."

As man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive --W ATE R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the united States was over 300 billion GPD (1) or more than 1,700 GPD per person (5). The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the united States by the year 2 000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). How, then, can we continue to wreak such havoc on that life-sustaining substance -W ATE R? It is necessary, indeed mandatory, that those engaged in the Engineering profession consider it their moral obligation, not only to conserve the quantity of water which their conceived projects may require, but also to treat the effluent in order that the eutro-phication of natural water courses not be abnormally accelerated. The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33-1/2 millions of gallons of fresh water daily at its nine town-sites, fourteen mines and eight plants throughout the Sudbury district of Ontario. The present daily reuse of water exceeds 100 millions of gallons in the same area. It is noteworthy to mention that the milling rate has increased from 46,000 to 70,000 tons per day during the past five years, with no increase in water consumption. In fact, there has been a reduction in fresh water requirements.

The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

New developments are required each day as our industry becomes more competitive. To improve performance, continue and to ensure future demands can be met. This requires the development of technical support systems that enable a more constant delivery and quality of installation of pile foundations and other applications. For example: assistance systems capable of relieving the machine operator of automating monotonous or repetitive operations. Real time installation control of the production process to manage quality control, or data transfer and reporting systems capable of keeping pace with the digital future. This paper will describe these new approaches and considerations required for these new developments. The paper also describes the equipment which is needed to execute the work under the various conditions and provides references herein. INTRODUCTION The success of a construction site is influenced by a number of factors. Selecting the most efficient and economic methods during the planning phase to defining the right direction. This means having multifunctional equipment available. To ease the usage of this equipment by the operator, uniform operation and control systems are essential. Systems like this can provide uniform handling procedure for more than 20 different installation techniques. Experienced operators are not always available. Therefore, to ease the start for beginners and to support training, numerous assistance systems were developed. This ranges from simple information for controls shown on the monitor avoiding misuse to systems which can partly automate the construction process. Regardless, the best equipment is not enough when the construction is not running smooth. The control system not only helps to organize and coordinate service of the equipment; moreover, it allows the operator to control the quality during the installation process reacting if needed. It allows process optimization as well as documentation which might be required for later negotiations.

"Increasing energy costs in mineral processing is making it necessary for tighter controls over various parts of the concentrating process. Continuous monitoring and control of critical process streams can be easily performed by today's many computer systems. Indeed, the list of successful applications of computers to grinding and flotation control continues to grow. The day is rapidly approaching when the use of computers within concentrators for either process control or simply metallurgical accounting will no longer be a luxury, but a necessity. The benefits from such applications far out weight the initial investment.This paper describes the current application of a process control system at Brunswick Mining in north-eastern New Brunswick. Emphasis is placed on the control of a CuPb flotation circuit, and the benefits derived-from this control.No. 12 Cu-Pb Flotation: The complex nature of the Brunswick flotation process has been described else-where. 1,2,3 Four final concentrates are eventually produced, these being a Zn concentrate assaying 53% Zn, a 30% Pb concentrate, a 20% Cu concentrate, and a bulk Pb Zn concentrate assaying 35% Zn and 17% Pb. The Cu concentate, Pb concentrate, and bulk Pb Zn concentrate are all derived from a primary CuPb concentrate assaying 26% Pb, 11% Zn and 1.8% Cu.The No. 12 CuPb circuit produces approximately two thirds of the total primary CuPb concentrate. No. 12 ore, assaying 3.5% Pb, 9% Zn, 0.25% Cu and 100 g/tne silver, is ground in two parallel grinding circuits. Each line uses a 3.2 x 4.2 meter rod mill in closed circuit with two parallel 3.2 x 3.9 meter ball mills. Ball mill and rod mill discharges are classified in two stages of cycloning. The secondary cyclone overflow, or flotation feed, is controlled at 65% passing 37 microns."

TATA Steel’s R&D Division at Jamshedpur has developed a slime beneficiation process to recover iron values from iron ore slime. This process recovers iron ore concentrate containing 2.2 per cent alumina from a feed containing 7–10 per cent alumina. The reject generated from beneficiation of iron ore slime is treated as waste as the iron content in the reject is below 45 per cent. Effective utilisation of this waste is required for making the iron ore slime beneficiation process a zero-waste technology. In this connection several studies were made towards utilisation of slime waste. One of these studies revealed that slime waste can be used as a soil conditioner. Slime waste contains particles of size less than 10 micron and when these particles are mixed with soil in definite proportions, the porosity and the permeability of the mixture goes down. As a result, the water holding capacity (WHC) improves. This concept was evaluated through a series of tests at greenhouse level to optimise the soil to slime ratio. Finally, a pilot scale field trial was carried out over a period of three months using paddy rice as the crop. Three separate plots with compositions of: soil + organic matter comprising Farmyard Manure (FYM), (ii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM), and (iii) soil and slime waste (2:1) + organic matter (FYM) + Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK) fertiliser were used for the pilot trial. The results showed a 20 per cent increase in the productivity of paddy rice for plot (ii) as compared to plot (i). This was due to the beneficial effect of slime waste in the soil. The addition of inorganic fertiliser such as NPK in the ratio of (4:2:1) further enhanced the productivity of paddy rice.

"This paper presents the foundation changes made for a five-span bridge over the Lehigh River constructed as a design-build project. During excavation within the cofferdam at Pier 2 for the construction of a spread footing to bear on rock, it proved extremely difficult to control the water entering the excavation as the sheet pile tips were variable due to the bedrock pinnacles and a weathered rock zone above the top of rock allowing water to pass below the sheeting. Water also entered from the bottom of the excavation, possibly due to the presence of solution openings within the dolomite bedrock. After repeated failures to achieve subgrade elevation and maintain a dry excavation, a design change to drilled shafts was made. Additional borings were performed for each of the shaft locations to explore the area underlain by karstic dolomite rock. A seal consisting of tremie concrete with adequate weight was placed to counter the differential head of water and the three drilled shafts (with minimum 25 feet [7.62 meter] rock sockets) were installed. A detailed construction sequence was followed and advanced quality control testing was performed. The construction of Pier 2 was completed successfully.1. INTRODUCTIONThis paper presents the description of the design change made from spread footing to drilled shafts as a result of site conditions encountered during the excavation for the spread footing for a bridge pier in the Lehigh River in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The bridge is located in an area underlain with dolomite rock, presenting karstic conditions including irregular top of rock and solution openings that provided high hydraulic conductivity below the top of rock. Also, the presence of a zone of weathered rock and pinnacle rock prevented the advancement of sheet piles when constructing the cofferdam. Thus, the difficulties of advancing the excavation to the desired spread footing level resulted in the design change to drilled shafts during construction. Since the project was Design-Build, the design could be changed by a collaborative process through the efforts of the Contractor, its geotechnical and structural engineers, and the State's (owner's) geotechnical and structural engineers and construction management staff."

The major problems are identified the high phosphorus content and the fine dissemination or encapsulation of mineral impurities, in, ,the iron bearing minerals, A process which combined extreme fine grinding techniques with magnetizing roasting or flotation separation methods, is suggested. By these methods concentrates assaying 60-61 percent Fe exceeding the widely accepted upper limit of 56 percent Fe set for these ores, were produced with 75-90 percent iron recovery. Moreover it was shown that the phosphorus content of these concentrates could be reduced from 0.25 to 0.03 percent phosphorus by acid leaching. A brief discussion on production costs based on current and future developments in iron ore processing is given.

Lightweight aggregates have become increasingly important to the construction industry. From 1953 to 1960, the quantity of the aggregates used in concrete block, precast and prestressed concrete, and monolithic structures increased about 92 percent. The present study was conducted in Bureau of Mines Area IV which encompasses the South-Central States of Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. This is an administrative area and does not delimit a market area or imply an economic unit. Because of the increasing importance of metropolitan areas in evaluating economic growth, significant data showing relationships between growth of the metropolitan areas and the lightweight aggregate industry are included.
