Three dimensional surface approximations are important means of evaluating physical and environmental factors that affect surface coal mining and reclamation. Computer approximated surfaces are projected as an array of square grid cells where individual cells define each parameter value respective to locations on the grid. Grid surfaces or grid cells within a surface can be compared or modified through application of standard mathematical functions. Surface approximations can be used to define the quantity and quality of marketable coal and to evaluate thickness and quality of overburden. Surface approximations also can be used to evaluate overburden swell factors wherein changes in post-mine topographic relief are related to expansion of unconsolidated materials in the backfill. Application of computer approximated surface to analysis of approximate original contour (AOC) standards allows an assessment of the quantity and geographical displacement of overburden and the distribution and numerical level of slope.

Purification of samarium metal by sublimation and by vaporization from a low-melting metal flux, at the same temperature, were compared. Vaporization proved more effective for removing impurities such as magnesium, calcium, and manganese. Recovery of samarium, however, is more rapid by sublimation because of its constant rate of distillation.

In one of North AmericaÆs largest mines, which contains more than six active coal-producing faces, mine controllers must meet the complex challenge of adhering to the mine plan while also ensuring customer quality. Fleet management systems (FMS) provide many different avenues to control production flows, from the faces to the various pit crushers. Nonetheless, mine controllers must balance a variety of factors such as unplanned downs, differing customer demands, their own daily key performance indicators (KPIs) related to equipment utilisation, among others. Deviating from the short-term mine plan is the most common means of balancing the other factors, since adherence to the plan is traditionally only measured during the weekly variance meeting with engineering staff. However, such deviation may be one of the most costly responses, as long-term scheduling issues may arise such as multi-face dead-heading or insufficient stripping. This paper focuses on the development of a system for real-time adherence to mine plan within a control room environment. This system is part of a larger blending-focused, multi-million dollar project with elements of a centralised remote control room, developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management (MISOM) Mine Control Center (MC2). The mine plan (MPL) component of the overall blending system integrates both historical and real-time FMS data with mine plan requirements directly sourced from original systems (no additional input required). The measures, displayed largely as graphs, have tools to help controllers manage the production to facilitate adherence to the plan. Some measures are designed to motivate crews to perform by inciting competition between crews, softened through a study of the controller culture. The MPL component was deployed at the mine, and the before and after deployment adherence was measured. This paper discusses the technical development of the new tool, its deployment, and an ethnography (study of culture) to understand controller motivation.

The statistical information and cost data used in this report has been made available by NICKDATA INC. Since 1982, NICKDATA INC. of Toronto, Canada, has produced an annual comprehensive nickel industry cost study. Up to date information on 22 mines, 21 smelters, and 16 nickel refineries representing 30 nickel production operations in 17 countries are included in the computerized cost analysis. The report is compiled from information obtained through regular annual visits to major nickel operations and continuous monitoring of information on all nickel producers. The 1984 report which was completed this summer, reveals drastic changes in the nickel industry cost structures.

Open pit production planning is a procedure consisting of multiple stages. Although all the planning stages rely on the geostatistical block models, long- to short-term plans each require their appropriate resolutions and levels of details. The main motives behind using different resolutions are the tractability of the models and the practicality of the generated schedules. The current approach in the mining industry is to use nested pits generated by Lerchs-Grossman as the basis for long-term planning and to use manually generated polygons, within those pushbacks, as the units of production control in mid- and short-term planning. However, the nested pits generated by Lerchs-Grossman algorithm and the polygons drawn by mining engineer do not provide control over the value and tonnage of ore and waste inside the planning units and therefore cannot lead to optimum solutions. In this paper, we first present a pushback determination approach which maximizes the profit of the mine with control over the tonnage of ore and waste within each pushback. We then propose a clustering approach with size and shape control that determines aggregates within those pushbacks; and finally, we introduce a mathematical programming model which uses the generated pushbacks and aggregates as the planning basis and generates production schedules that maximize the net present value of the operation and are practical from the operation?s point of view.

Cominco Snip is a 60: 40 joint venture of Cominco Ltd. and Prime Resources Group Inc. Cominco manages the operation. The mine site is located in a narrow mountain valley where Bronson Creek enters the Iskut River in Northwestern British Columbia. Access is by air only to the company's 1,500 meter airstrip. Milling at a designed feed rate of 300 tpd began on schedule in January 1991. Tonnage and gold production in the form of bullion bars from the gravity circuit and gold bearing float concentrate have exceeded design forecast. This presentation will examine many of the factors that influenced the final plant design inclusive of exploration findings, bench scale and pilot plant test results, environmental and social considerations, capital and projected operating costs and product transportation alternatives such as the operation's Hovercraft.

Proposed by outstanding electrochemist and electrometallurgist Prof. Raphael Agladze (191 1- 1989), process of copper and manganese co-electrowinning was enhanced to the pre- electrowinning stages: low,temperature co-leaching of copper and manganese containing materials, and to high-temperature co-roasting of the same materials with consecutive leaching. The report presents results of experimental investigations of the processes mentioned above, as well as results of thermodynamic investigations of co-roasting processes, and co- leaching processes computer modeling.

The addition of lead to a gold leaching reactor can effectively accelerate or retard the gold cyanidation reaction. This study explored the effect of lead on the gold dissolution kinetics using cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments. It was illustrated that the gold leaching kinetics in the cyanide solution enhanced with the addition of lead salt in the low overpotential region (–0.35 V vs. Ag/AgCl). The similar behavior was observed in the presence of ore containing 0.25% galena. In contrast, the gold oxidation kinetics retarded at –0.35 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) in the presence of silicate and lead-bearing mineral under certain conditions. Likewise, the lead addition was not functional for the high sulfur ore. This was attributed to the oxidation of the sulfides to the elemental sulfur, which subsequently formed a passivating layer on the gold surface. The results were evidently affirmed by the electrochemical tests and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis.

Continuum damage mechanics (CDM) of rocks is studied together with their elastic and plastic behaviors to develop simulation tools for hydraulic fracturing jobs in naturally fractured formations. The model is constituted based upon pressure sensitive inelastic deformation of porous rocks and their damage mechanisms in the cases of drained and undrained conditions. The CDM model is formulated within Fracture mechanics framework. The performance of the developed elastoplastic and CDM models are compared with the available test data of a specific shale play. The hydraulic fractures growth in the reservoir scale is then simulated; in which the effect of fluid viscosity, natural fractures characteristics and differential stresses on induced fracture network is studied. The simulation results are compared with the available solutions in the literature. The developed CDM model outperforms the traditional fracture mechanics approaches by removing stress singularities at the fracture tips and simulation of progressive fractures without any essential need for remeshing.

There are few organic ligands that can adsorb effectively on noble metals, especially gold, in aqueous media. Ligands containing sulfur and nitrogen donors are known to be the most effective. Dithiophosphorous acids, for example, are known to adsorb on gold under certain conditions and these, along with xanthates, are used traditionally to recover gold values by flotation from ores. These compounds, however, are not necessarily selective for gold since most of the associated sulfide minerals are also floated. Monothiophosphorous acids, on the other hand, were recently discovered to float gold values selectively from sulfide-containing ores in a mildly alkaline medium; thus the dicresyl monothiophosphate is now used commercially in a gold flotation operation in the U.S.

The sizing of a starter dam for a Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) involves balancing many competing demands. It should cost as little as possible, be high enough to store tailings until the first raise can be constructed, it must be able to contain water safely, and it must be designed in such a way that the long-term integrity of the higher raises are not compromised, among other things. In addition to these demands there is the complication of the behaviour of the process plant, and the tailings during commissioning. Variations in slurry density, excess water in the TSF, initial settled density of the tailings, reliability issues, and beach slopes above and below water can all impact the way the tailings beaches are developed and ultimately impact the ability of the starter dyke to contain the required volume of tailings and water.The conventional approach to the design of a TSF starter dyke is to begin looking at the elevation required for a set of deterministic design parameters, find ways to reduce the size or volume of it as much as possible to reduce cost, and then possibly look at the sensitivity of some of the input parameters. This paper discusses a stochastic modelling approach for starter dykes that allows a wide range of design inputs to be simulated quickly, with an envelope of possible results produced. The sensitivity to different parameters can also be examined to understand which design inputs have the biggest impact on the required dyke sizing. By integrating the 3D TSF modelling tool Muk3D with GoldSim, it will be demonstrated how a wide range of scenarios can be evaluated and how that information can be used to make better decisions about the selection of design options.CITATION:Cooper, C A and Suter, G A, 2018. Power consumption of stirred media mills has been studied by an approach developed from work on stirred reactors. Relationships between torque required to rotate both disc and pin impellers immersed in dense particulate media as a function of speed, impeller and tank dimensions, and other relevant variables are evaluated. Data collected during numerous different experimental conditions are analyzed. The results can be summarized and presented in the form of characteristic plots, general equations and dimensionless group correlations involving power and modified Reynolds numbers. Special attention is directed towards the rheological properties of the media, which is considered as non-Newtonian liquids and hence, the equation of power law liquids is employed. Procedure for estimating parameters of effective viscosity and scale-up guidelines with respect to power consumption are put forward.

"Inflatable rock bolts are commonly utilized for ground support in Nevada underground mines, however, there is limited information regarding what factors influence the bond strength of these bolts. Bond strength is an important parameter in friction bolt support design, and this information is usually not available from manufacturers as a standard. Previous research has investigated the bond strength of friction bolts; however, these studies focused primarily on split set bolts and ground conditions more favorable compared to those commonly encountered in Nevada underground mines. Without site-specific bolt pull-out tests, ground control engineers are required to make assumptions regarding the in-situ bond strength of rock bolts. This is especially a concern for projects in the feasibility and initial development stages before site-specific experience is acquired.The purpose of this paper is to establish confidence in anticipated minimum bond strength for inflatable rock bolts by comparing the bond strength to variable geotechnical conditions using the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system. To investigate a correlation between these parameters, the minimum bond strength of pull-out tested inflatable rock bolts was compared to the RMR of the rock in which these bolts were placed. Bond strength vs. RMR plots indicate that expected minimum bond strength is positively correlated with RMR, however the correlation is not strong. Cumulative percent graphs indicate that 97% of pull-out tests result in a minimum bond strength of 1 ton/ft and ½ ton/ft in RMR =45 and <45, respectively.Although lower bond strengths are more commonly encountered in low RMR ground, high bond strengths are possible as well, yielding higher variability in bond strengths in low RMR ground. Bond strength of friction bolts relies on contact between the rock bolt and drill hole. Experience in Nevada indicates that RMR is known to affect both the quality and consistency of drill holes which likely affects bond strength. Drilling and bolting in low RMR ground is more sensitive to drilling and bolting practices, and strategies for maximizing bond strength in these conditions are discussed."

In the processing of rare earth ores, a pure, mixed rare earth chloride solution is usually produced and used as the feed to solvent extraction circuits to separate the individual rare earths. Cerium(III) may be separated from the other rare earths by oxidising it to cerium(IV), which precipitates as cerium(IV) hydroxide in chloride liquors. This oxidation step may be inserted either before rare earth separation by solvent extraction or between solvent extraction circuits. Although oxidation of cerium by sodium hypochlorite has been known for many years, detailed conditions for oxidation are not readily available. "The Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million people. The project was constructed by a joint venture (JV) of four South American contractors and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment plant: A 16-ha (39-acre) area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day (1.2 million cu ft/d) of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored tunnel: Nearly 15 km (9 miles) of 3.6 m (12 ft) inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m (59 ft to 72 ft) below grade, was bored with two earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions. Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access and ventilation shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (intake and treatment plant, respectively) and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installedafterward."

"Our understanding of mineral resources relies on three basic steps: data capture data interpretation model construction. Until recently, all three of these steps required significant time and manual effort to produce a single resource model for mine planning, typically taking more than a year to progress from drilling to the final block model. Over the past several years, BHP Billiton has been developing innovative workflows in rapid resource modelling projects to significantly reduce these time constraints and make the process more productive by replacing manual activities with automated ones. Rapid resource modelling is the process of combining recently developed off-the-shelf technology with internal technology developments to fundamentally change the way we collect, interpret, model and evaluate geoscience data. Initiatives include automated systems and standardised workflows to make it safer, faster and cheaper to continuously update multidiscipline resource models. Specifically, rapid resource modelling workflows combine: real-time analysis of drill holes and drill samples with downhole tools and hyperspectral scanning systemsautomated interpretation of drill hole intervals based on pattern-recognition algorithmscontinuous modelling workflows using implicit modelling software. "The paper presents the results of research on the development of gold and silver extraction technology from refractory gold sulphide flotation concentrate of one deposits of Nord-East of Russia. The concentrate is due to the complex mineral composition. Gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals (arsenopyrite and pyrite partially oxidized by 7-11%). These are characterized by high content of silver 219 g/t and sulphide sulfur 32%, the presence of poorly soluble silver minerals (silver sulfosalts, fahlore, finely dispersed hypergenic acanthite in iron hydroxides and jarosite, etc.), and impurity minerals capable of interacting with cyanide (pyrrhotite, marcasite, nonferrous sulphides) and causing higher than normal cyanide consumption. Pretreatment of refractory sulphide concentrate by biooxidation using a mixed association of mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria at a temperature of 36-40 °C for 120 hours oxidized arsenopyrite by 97.5%, pyrite by 93.5%, unlocked refractory gold, and generally oxidized the minerals absorbing cyanide and oxygen before cyanidation. Further oxidation of these minerals-absorbents was facilitated by the aeration in calcareous medium of the solid biooxidation residues of the concentrate. Sorption cyanidation of the solid biooxidation residues with addition of lead (II) of recovered 91.2% of gold and 82.9% silver from biooxidation residue, compared with 80.1% and 46.6%, respectively, for sorption cyanidation without the preceding biooxidation step. Biooxidation of the concentrate prior to cyanidation improves the recovery of precious metals, especially silver, and significantly reduces cyanide consumption from 18.7 kg/t to 3-5 kg/t of concentrate. INTRODUCTION Biooxidation of gold sulphide concentrates using acidophilic microorganisms has been successfully applied worldwide (van Aswegen et al., 2007; Gericke et al., 2009; Sovmen et al., 2007; Sovmen et al., 2009). At least 15 full-scale plants for tank biooxidation of sulphide concentrates are presently in operation, and the construction of new ones is planned (Bulaev et al, 2015)."

Risk analysis is used extensively in many engineering applications. Although its use in the field of dam safety has been limited in practice, it has received considerable attention in recent years in the dam safety literature. Thus far, it has been shown that risk analysis in the evaluation of existing dams has the potential for providing a more rational basis for decision- making because of its focus on the direct issues--likelihood of failure, likelihood of loss of life, and risk cost of damages. It provides for a logical balance between the risk a dam imposes and the degree to which rehabilitation is required, compared to traditional evaluations based on somewhat arbitrarily chosen design events applied to large classes of dams. Dam owners could benefit by optimizing the cost of remedial measures. Downstream landowners could benefit by minimizing the likelihood of flood damages. However, it is also clear that significant technical and policy issues remain to be resolved before risk analysis in dam safety is accepted and routinely implemented in engineering practice. An obvious and important potential application of risk analysis is its use by the state regulatory agency as an in-house evaluation tool, or even as part of regulatory policy, in the implementation of its state dam safety program. Adoption of such a policy would have an important impact on the mining industry. .Although no state dam safety programs are known by the writers to have officially incorporated risk analysis into their regulations, there appears to be considerable interest in the concept. In recent surveys 47 states agreed that the development and promotion of a risk assessment methodology for state dam safety programs should be encouraged (Tschantz, 1983; Tschantz, 1984). The issue has also received important attention within the Association of State Dam Safety Officials (1986). One state-Illinois-proposed regulations during 1986 to allow risk analysis to justify lower spillway requirements for existing dams (Illinois Department of Transportation, 1986). At the Federal level, the National Research Council has found risk analysis especially appropriate for assessing dam safety at high-hazard dams (National Research Council, 19851, the Bureau of Reclamation has published guidelines for incorporating risk analysis into their dam safety grogram (U.S. Department of the Interior, 1986), and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has recently sponsored workshops and supported research related to risk analysis in dam safety (Federal Emergency Management Agency, 1985a ; Federal Emergency Management Agency, 1985b; - - McCann, et. al., 1985a, 1985b).

"The Gunnar uranium deposit was within metasedimentary rocks of the late Archaen Tazin Group. These rocks were intensely altered by albitization so that the immediate host to the ore consisted dominantly of albite, and by the subsequent introduction of calcite. The ore consisted of disseminated pitchblende and uranophane in a pipe-shaped breccia zone. Oxidation of the ore was more intense near surface than at depth, but there was no near-surface enrichment.IntroductionThe Gunnar Mine site is on the tip of Crackingstone Peninsula, on the north shore of Lake Athabasca, Province of Saskatchewan, Canada. The peninsula forms the southern part of the Beaverlodge mining area. The ore consisted of disseminated pitchblende and uranophane in brecciated metasedimentary rocks of the Tazin Group, and the deposit was characterized by extreme albitization and subsequent carbonatization of the host environment.Production from the mine began in 1954 and the ore was depleted by 1963. In that interval the deposit yielded about 5 million tonnes of ore containing about I. 75 kg/tonne U3O8. It was mined initially from an open-pit and subsequently from underground; the open-pit contributed about 55% of total tonnage. Uranium was recovered by atmospheric leaching in sulphuric acid, ion exchange concentration, and precipitation with magnesia.This paper is based on studies made during the productive life of the mine and is concerned primarily with pre-ore alteration of the rocks containing the deposit, and with the ore mineralogy."

"IntroductionOn May 27, 1927, a coal-dust explosion occurred at the Palagua No. 5 mine of the Victor American Fuel Company, Delagua, Colorado, resulting in the loss of even lives and in and in considerable damage to the main slope and to several overcasts the explosion did not extend into the mine working where 125 additional men were employed but escaped uninjured. It is believed that the saving of these 125 men and the evidence of large property loss were due in a large measure to coal-dusting and of other sanity measures taken by the coal company management. A number of features connected with the explosion and mine safety practice seem worth the attention of the mining public and grateful acknowledgment is made to the Victor American Fuel Company for its aid in assembling the data herein contained."
