Discussion of the paper of D. Foster Hewett, Bulletin To. 27, March, 1909, pp. 291 to 310. JAMES F. KEMP, New York, N. Y.:-Mr. Hewett's paper is one of exceptional interest, because it not only adds an important contribution regarding one of the rarer, valuable elements, but also because it introduces compounds hitherto unknown and in associations no less novel. While we have occasionally dis¬covered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit essentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection. Vanadium was first discovered and recognized as a distinct element in the slags obtained in smelting the titaniferous magnetites at Taberg, Sweden. For a long time, therefore, we looked upon the titaniferous magnetites as its hone. Analyses proved, years ago, that it was present in the ores of this type in New Jersey and in the Adirondacks. It was quite rarely determined, but when looked for it was, I think, invariably found, although the Amount seldom exceeded 0.5 per cent. of V,05., In just what combination it exists in the titaniferous ores is uncertain. One might imagine V2O3 replacing some of the Fe2O3 of magnetite; or, since in the lead series vanadates and phosphates are closely akin, one might wonder if a lime-vanadate could take the place of apatite. Yet no lime-vanadate has been found in nature, and apatite itself is usually rare in the titaniferous ores. When percentage-curves are plotted for a series of analyses of the ores, the line of vanadic oxide shows a curious sympathetic behavior with the line of chromic oxide;' but the data are somewhat limited, and no compound has sug¬gested itself which throws light on the matter. IN my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in. flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. In common with others, I observed that when there was any obstruction in. the wash-water on the table of sufficient size to divert the water to either side, the concentrates collected, and, on exposure to the air, would promptly float away. A number of standards and guidance materials currently exist to assist equipment designers. The ISO process, however, is a formal process and change often lags behind technology development. In some cases, this may result in weak or ineffective standards that need to be written in general terms to accommodate future technology developments, meaning some standards may only establish minimum requirements and not be overly helpful to equipment designers, in particular when designing for workforce diversity and inclusivity. By contrast, advisory information as issued by various mining regulatory bodies is able to respond more quickly to changes in technology. Standards do however have a safety and productivity focus providing design consistency between equipment manufacturers, a basis for auditing purposes, assistance in mining regulation and compliance, and in the development and application of safety management systems. As an example of challenges facing equipment designers, ISO3411 (2020) provides data approximating the 5th, 50th and 95th percentile of the ‘earth-moving machinery operator population’ for numerous static dimensions relevant to the design of earth-moving equipment. These data are then utilised in ISO6682 (2020) to provide recommendations regarding the location of controls. Attempting to utilise the data provided in ISO3411 (or other sources of static anthropometric data) creates further challenges for equipment designers, in that reference percentiles is problematic for design purposes. There is no ‘5th or 95th percentile operator’ as individuals vary along each dimension (Robinette and Hudson, 2006). Although dimensions have some degrees of correlation, when multiple dimensions are considered, the range of individuals which fall within a given range on all dimensions reduces substantially. For example, only about 82 per cent of individuals in a population will fall within the 5th to 95th percentile ranges for both height and weight. The more dimensions are considered, the smaller the range of people who actually ‘fit’ the description.

Spontaneous combustion hazard assessment from an environmental impact perspective is not well understood and is seldom given due consideration in environmental impact statements. In surface mining operations, self-heating, leading to spontaneous combustion may occur when rock units containing reactive metal sulphides and organic carbon are disturbed by mining operations and exposed to the atmosphere. When these rocks are present self-heating will occur in situations where the rate of heat generated from oxidation reactions exceeds the rate of heat lost to the surroundings. The processes and mechanisms that lead to spontaneous combustion events are varied and generally complex. To effectively manage spontaneous combustion in surface mining operations, it is necessary to characterise the spontaneous combustion propensity of the geological materials involved. Until recently there has been no testing procedure for assessing the propensity of waste rock to spontaneously combust that has been adopted by industry. However, new developments in adiabatic test methods have proven successful in determining the self-heating behaviour of coal (Beamish and Theiler, 2015) and coal containing reactive pyrite (Beamish and Theiler, 2017). These adiabatic test methods have now been modified to assess the incubation behaviour of waste rocks and can be used for their spontaneous combustion characterisation in advance of mining (Beamish and Theiler, 2016). The new method provides a practical means to establish the likelihood of developing a spontaneous combustion event for the specific site conditions. This paper presents examples of the use of a cost effective first pass filter for assessing spontaneous combustion potential of waste rock based on geochemical data from four surface mines. This is supported by adiabatic Incubation Test results for three of the mines and visual examination of cores for one of the mines. CITATION:Theiler, J and Beamish, B, 2018. "Introductory Statement.In founding any kind of castings, even with the best practice, scrap castings are produced because of rejections for certain defects. Casting los¬ses are a serious source of financial loss in iron and steel foundry practice as well as, in brass and bronze, but they are particularly serious in aluminum foundry work because of the high value of aluminum. The indications are that in many aluminum foundries in the United States, the casting losses are at times high, and in some plants they are entirely too high when compared with average practice. Of course, defective castings have a residual value for remelting, but if much machine work has been done on a casting before it is scraped, the labor costs alone may exceed the value of the metal and even that of the rough casting.In a foundry, the monetary losses incurred through the production of waster castings can be ascertained from calculations based upon adequate scrap-loss reports. Such reports, when properly kept and interpreted are a valuable aid in finding foundry costs, but they are primarily useful in diagnosing the causes for casting losses. Many aluminum foundries in the United States do not keep adequate records of strap losses; as a result the causes for defective castings can not be traced, nor preventative measures adopted. However, some of the large aluminum foundries keep excellent records, and it has been found that these involve little extra expense for clerical work. If a foundry man will study his daily production of defective and waster castings, he will be able to trace the causes or losses and then make such corrections in his plant practice as will effect a considerable reduction in these losses -- as much as 50.0 per tent in some foundries. If all the present casting losses of the United States could be reduced 50.0 per cent, by eliminating only the readily preventable defectives, a saving of several million dollars would accrue. In the aluminum-foundry industry alone, the saving would amount to about $600,000."

The purpose of the research is the development of a complex of solutions for the maximum extraction of non-ferrous and precious metals from persistent mineral raw materials by heap bioleaching from spent heap leaching (HL) stacks. Methodical recommendations for assessing the suitability of primary and technogenic refractory mineral raw materials for heap bioleaching are developed. Active associations of microorganisms have been created for the conversion from various types of ores to the solution of S, Fe, As, Sb, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, Mg, P and other elements, as well as methodologies for their storage, immobilization and preparation of bioreagents in industrial conditions. On a pilot scale, tests were carried out on samples weighing 15-17 thousand tons of refractory gold-sulphide ores (more than 50% of gold is associated with sphalerite), gold-quartz ores with colloidal gold (74% associated with quartz and pyrite) and gold-silver ores with elevated copper and zinc content (1.5 and 3,5%, respectively), as well as man-caused material lying for 4-5 years of spent quarry material of oxidized gold-silver ores. In the pilot-industrial tests of heap bioleaching of gold-sulfide ores, gold recovery of 84-85% and silver was achieved to 89-90%, the possibility of obtaining high-yield solutions of copper and zinc, suitable for hydrometallurgical processing, from gold-silver ores, and the possibility of obtaining waste with a dump content of valuable components, suitable for deep disposal in the construction industry. When comparing two technologies for processing refractory ores after biooxidation under HL conditions, when 1000 tons of ore processed by the bioreagent were re-milled from a size of 40 mm to 0.1 mm and cyanated under the conditions of the factory process, the same results were obtained for gold recovery (85%) and silver (90%), as with the heap version. BERYLLIUM was discovered in 1798 by Vauquelin and the metal was first produced by Wohler in 1828 about a year later than his production of metallic aluminum. Beryllium remained dormant until about 1920 when the production of the metal by the electrolysis of a molten bath was carried out by Stock in Germany, closely followed by Dickinson in the United States and by Vivian in England. This may not have been the first time the electrolytic method was thus used but was the beginning of present-day methods. I believe the first commercial attempts in this country started with the Kemet Laboratories about 1924. Siemens & Halske in Germany were working on the same problem at about the same time. The work of the Kemet Laboratories was transferred to the Beryllium Company of America and later to the Beryllium Development Corporation. In 1926 1 made a considerable study of the beryllium¬copper alloys, using beryllium purchased from the Beryllium Company of America, and read a paper on this subject at the February, 1927, meeting of the A.I.M.E. However, I failed at that time to discover the properties of precipitation hardening which such alloys have in a very marked degree. After this publication the work on beryllium-copper alloys rested awhile. One cause for this was the difficulty of securing a supply of beryllium-at least at what might be considered a reasonable price. In 1926 the price was $200 per lb., a figure which held about the same both in this country and in Germany until the beginning of 1932, when it was offered here at $50 per lb. if taken in the form of a copper alloy which carried about 121/2 per cent beryllium. Somewhat later the 121/2 per cent alloy dropped to $25 per lb. of beryllium contained, which is the present price. Promise is made that with a greater consumption, production on a larger scale warrants a reduction in price to $10 per pound or less.

A DISTINGUISHED engineer, the active head of a large mining company, has said that surveying attains the dignity of a profession only in the hands of a few men-the few who know how to keep notes that will be understood by even a novice without further word of explanation. Of all mine-records, survey notes are perhaps the most important. The maps made from them serve as a working-guide, and as framework for other data ; and when, from any cause, access to underground workings is shut off, the surveyor's record often becomes invaluable. So seldom does a surveyor have a chance to check underground surveys by making a closure, that he is compelled to rely on the precision of each step of his work for the accuracy of the final result. When data are fully recorded on the spot, the notes, even in the hands of second parties, become evidence of the care and precision with which the surveying was done. It is worth a great deal to be able to pick up the work of a former surveyor where it was left o$; and to be able to carry it forward without retracing from the beginning. The purpose of this paper is to describe the survey-note system of a mine now under my direction, in which underground surveys had to be relied upon entirely for the proper division of rich ore-bodies between neighbors, thereby placing a premium on accurate surveying and permanent records. In survey-work, it soon turns out that paper is the least item of expense, and that little is gained by trying to economize note-book space. For many purposes it is best to record notes on cards or loose-leaves, which may be left in the office at the end of the day's work, and need not be carried into the mine again, there to become smeared with grime and grease. "What is now known as the 'Waite section' of the property of Waite Amulet Mines, Limited, was originally the Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery mine. It includes a group of twenty-eight claims lying on either side of the Duprat-Dufresnoy township line, and about 8 miles north-northwest of Noranda, Quebec. ,The original discovery of ore on the property was made by Thomas Montgomery in Block Q, Duprat township, and was staked by him on behalf of himself, I. C. Waite, and C. H. Ackerman, in the summer of 1925. The property was optioned late in 1925 to N. A. Timmins who, after trenching and drilling the deposit, sold his 85 per cent interest to Noranda Mines, Limited. Early in 1927, a company known as Waite-Ackerman-Montgomery Mines, Limited, was formed and shaft sinking and development undertaken. Production commenced in August, 1928, ·and continued tJ May, 1930, when, owing to falling metal prices, shipment of direct smelting ore was stopped. Development of the mine by shaft sinking, drifting, and drilling continued until March, 1932, when owing to the prolonged low price of metals, the property was closed down. In September, 1933, an amalgamation with Amulet Mines, Limited, was effected, the new company being called Waite Amulet Mines, Limited. Early in 1937 operations were resumed, first by direct shipments to the smelter and later by aerial tramway to the Amulet mill. Operations have been continuous up to the present time, reaching an average of 720 tons a day milled for the year 1940. Production during the initial period (1928-1930) amounted to 75,811 tons, having an average grade of 7 .11 per cent copper, 4.47 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton. During the second period (1937 to end of 1946) , 1,060,524 tons, having an average grade of 4.53 per cent copper, 2.97 per cent zinc, and 0.03 oz. gold and 0.65 oz. silver per ton, were produced."

"The main objective of this study is to introduce the new Sandvik’s production cost-model within Crushing & Screening (C&S) technology. So far, there have been different ways of determining different production costs in the industry, however, the previously published and presented methods have not been very efficient in calculating the costs per product and metric ton. Accordingly, the current study has been planned and started in collaboration with Lund University to provide an accurate and easy to implement cost estimation program to determine the costs for crushing and screening plants worldwide.The proposed model has been adapted to fit the C&S processes of different rocks/ores fractions. The result is presented as cost per ton of the end product(s).Within this paper the cost estimation results for 3 different crushing and screening plants are presented based on the information obtained from the following sources: a) documents at Sandvik SRP, b) Sandvik’s crushing & screening internal/external machines/plants data and information, c) literature studies, including the use of Sandvik’s internal/external simulation and software programs, d), visiting the crushing and screening plants ,e) interviews, information systems’ data, and, f) testing and observations by ourselves.In order to improve the level of accuracy and the validity of the attained results, simplistic Monte-Carlo simulations have been used, where needed. The achieved results, so far, have proven the reliability of the model. The calculated cost estimations have shown an accuracy over 80% when they compared with real cost data obtained from plant practices.The current cost calculation model, will offer the possibility of:•,Calculating the production costs in proposed and/or existing C&S plant.•,Making detailed cost analyses for the end product(s) in proposed and/or existing C&S plants.•,Determining the profitability of each finished product when it’s required.•,Cost optimization by potentially cutting the cost for part of C&S plant with an existing plant practice"

Central to any business is its Asset Management Plan which encapsulates the business context and key organisational objectives such as profitability, safety and environmental standards. Life Cycle Planning (LCP) is a key component of an overall Asset Management Plan. A comprehensive approach to Life Cycle Planning forecasts the financial expenditure required to support the performance of the asset over the business life. It incorporates capital, maintenance and operational expenditure along with an estimation of economic life. Within its body the LCP provides the detail of the maintenance plan and method of its execution. Once optimised the LCP becomes the overarching plan executed through the application of several elements of the Asset Management Plan to ensure the return on investment from the assets is optimal. Each of the elements of the LCP is bound by a set of loops that provide information based on the analysis of outcomes. These loops drive the continuous improvement of performance and cost over the life of the asset. In this way we ensure that the LCP is a dynamic plan responsive to the changing business environment. The paper being presented today will describe the process undertaken and the outcomes derived when this approach was applied to a $600 M+ coal handling and preparation plant in QueenslandÆs Bowen Basin. It will also delve into the difficulties encountered from both technical and cultural aspects; the latter proving to be the most difficult to manage. It will describe the hurdles and barriers that hampered progress including the human influences and the natural desire to revert to what has been done in the past when things became a bit difficult. In the end the results are there to show that the upfront expenditure and investment in time was time and money well spent and the outcome has the operation well placed to manage the assets in a manner designed to deliver the optimal business outcome.

Process plants are characterised by variability of performance over a wide range of time-scales; reflected in fluctuations in metal recovery, concentrate grade, plant throughput and reagent costs. In turn, these fluctuations impact financial metrics such as operating costs and revenue. The primary cause of plant variability is variation in the physical, lithological and mineralogical characteristics of the ore fed to the plant. The variability of the ore is driven by the intrinsic heterogeneity of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody, the mining method and mine production plan, the capacity to stockpile and blend, as well as the plant flow sheet and the level of plant automation. Whilst the impact of ore variability on process plants is universally recognised, it is rarely quantified in financial terms. Consequently, opportunities to reduce its impact are often overlooked due to the lack of a basis for a quantifiable cost-benefit analysis to justify improvement initiatives. This paper will present case studies using production data from the Renison tin concentrator and a zinc concentrator. These case studies demonstrate that as the standard deviation of plant head grade increases (as a proxy for ore variability), plant metal recovery subsequently reduces. The metal recovery is then converted into plant revenue losses, to quantify the economic impact of ore variability. The Renison case study demonstrated that whilst a very rare occurrence, revenue losses were as high as 34 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. The zinc concentrator case study demonstrated that revenue losses were as high as 6 per cent (relative to the baseline) when standard deviation was at its highest. Options are available for reducing and managing ore variability in the process plant. These options include changing mining practices so that the ore is fed to the plant with less variability, more advanced process plant control systems and the use of predictive geometallurgical models.

A study of certain gas making and fuel problems peculiar to the gas industry of California has been made by the Bureau of Mines. The work was done at the request of, and in cooperation with The California Gas Research Council 2, for the purpose of obtaining basic information on the gas-making fuels available to California, and their applicability to the present and future needs of the gas industry in that State. The data obtained have been applied in outlining a construction program, and indicate the possibilities in efficiently utilizing fuels in making gas by other than the oil-gas process. This paper presents an outline of the study and a summary of the principal results obtained, with some of the more important conclusions and recommendations based on this data. Gas is produced in California by processes which are both unique and different from those common to other parts of the United States. The bulk of the manufactured gas is made in and distributed from two main districts which are centers of population - namely, the Los Angeles district and the San Francisco Bay district. The gas manufactured in the Bay district is, almost exclusively oil-gas, whereas that produced in the southern part of the State, where natural gas is available, is mostly mixed natural gas and reformed-gas, but oil-gas is the chief product when the supply of natural gas is inadequate. Practically all of the gas companies are equipped with oil-gas generating apparatus, and anticipate using it in the future. As the continued use of the oil-gas process to the exclusion of all other processes, depends upon a continued supply of oil at a low cost, and the prospect of obtaining such low-priced oil in the future is somewhat uncertain, the questions have arisen: What will the future gas-making process or processes be? When will it be necessary to make plans for the installation of different gas generating equipment, and what will that equipment comprise?

This paper describes, in detail, results obtained from a research study of a complex iron ore aiming to produce a pellet feed concentrate with at least 65% of Fe and less than 3.5% of SiO2 in the final concentrate. The work includes an ore desliming followed by column flotation at laboratory scale. The ore sample was from Carajás province - Brazil and represents a complex low grade compact itabirite ore, analyzing 35.9% Fe, 45.1% SiO2 and 0.57% of Al2O3. Yet, the feed was treated previously by magnetic separation and grounded to 97% < 20 µm; this sample was named MAG 2. The chemical and mineralogical characterization of the MAG 2 sample showed that Fe and SiO2 grades were 50.7% and 24.3% respectively and was composed mainly by hematite, goethite and quartz. The particle size distribution, using a laser diffraction technique, showed that 90% of the particles were < 18 µm; 50% less than 8 µm and 10% minor than 1 µm. When the cationic reverse flotation without desliming was tested the selectivity of the process was very low and did not meet the concentrate metallurgical goals of the pellet feed product. However, when desliming was applied prior to flotation, a concentrate product with chemical characteristics of the pellet feed was obtained. The best results after desliming and column flotation achieved global iron metallurgical recovery of 72% with Fe grade in the concentrate of 66.5% and 2.1% SiO2 using starch as depressant for the iron oxides minerals at 1200 g/t ? 1500 g/t and an amine as the quartz collector at 100 g/t concentration (pH constant, at 10.5). It is believed that the desliming stage was key in the separation of the iron bearing particles and has a high potential for the flotation process of this type of ores.

"THE MAYO AREA was prospected as early as 1887. The first major activity started in 1898, when the Stewart River and its tributaries were examined for placer deposits, and in succeeding years the district became a small producer of placer gold. The first discovery of the lead-zinc-silver mineralization which has become the main interest of the district occurred in 1906, when a vein was found in the canyon of Galena Creek on the northwest slope of Galena Hill. This deposit was later known as the Silver King mine. In 1919 further discoveries were made on Keno Hill, approximately 15 miles east of the Silver King, the most important being the No.9 vein. Directly or indirectly, these finds are attributable to the search for placer gold, as galena was frequently found in the stream gravels.The 1919 Keno Hill discoveries were acquired by Yukon Gold Co. and operated through a subsidiary, Keno Hill Ltd., from 1920 to 1923. Most of the production came from No.9 vein. In 1921 Treadwell Yukon Corporation entered the field and acquired the Ladue mine. This company continued to operate for 21 years. It acquired in succession the Ladue, Sadie, Friendship, Lucky Queen, Elsa, Silver King, and Calumet mines. Its record of successful operations is very largely the achievement of the late Livingston Wernecke. Under his direction, the Treadwell Yukon Corp. produced metals with a gross value in excess of $21,000,000, in the face of greater transportation problems than exist today and with considerably lower metal prices.Treadwell Yukon ceased operations in 1942. Its entire assets were acquired in 1946 by United Keno Hill Mines Ltd., which has substantially increased the original holdings. It has drawn the bulk of its production from the Hector mine, adjacent to the Calumet. The Hector was not developed by Treadwell Yukon because of legal disputes among the vendors. It has proven to be the largest deposit yet discovered in the district."

In addition to volatile commodity prices influencing decision making, in recent years, social and environmental performance have become important decision drivers within the mining industry. There are increased demands from stakeholders, communities, and governments to ensure that raw materials are mined, processed and refined responsibly. The industry also faces the challenge of better managing its waste, which has led to severe consequences when not done properly. The high commodity prices of the late 90s and early 2000s encouraged larger economies of scale and drove mining companies to extract large volumes of rock for separation and concentration at the downstream processes. Over time, as ore grades dropped, the cost of mining escalated and tailings volumes grew. This arduous process also caused strains on recovery cost and performance. Scarcity of water and energy resources coupled with increased production demands and higher operating costs are putting pressure on companies to find innovative ways to increase mining intensities. Hatch’s value chain optimisation methodologies, specifically Grade Engineering® and early waste rejection of the mine, have been of interest to intensify operational performance and minimise waste generation. Enabling preconcentration of the plant throughput, the methodology has significant potential to improve overall metal production and reduce water and energy intensities, whilst minimising wet tailings. Using representative data from real world mines, this paper reports on a case study that evaluates the impact of preconcentration using sensor-based ore sorting on downstream process improvements as well as energy, water and tailings reduction. Financial and economic viability of this technique is presented for both brownfield and greenfield implementation cases. The results show that business case for preconcentration is best when: the distribution of metal in the run of mine ore is negatively skewed and left tailed; mining costs are low; energy, water and tailings management costs are high; and low cost methods of recovering pay metal from low grade material are available.

International mineral disclosure standards and guidelines aligned with the CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) template were developed to inform stakeholders about the relative accuracy and confidence levels of publicly reported information and to support investment decisions, particularly when advancing projects through different development stages. The traditional stages range from early to advanced exploration, through pre-development (with Mineral Resources and pre-feasibility and/or feasibility levels of study) before the final development stages, where a decision to proceed with construction or production (or both) is made. The traditional definition of Mineral Resource and Ore/Mineral Reserve classification categories and techno-economic study levels (including Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA), Scoping Study (SS), Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and Feasibility Study (FS)) were defined with pre-development project assessment in mind. As such, these definitions are not necessarily well aligned to the reporting structures required by operating mines which need to consider a range of timelines spanning short to long-term operating conditions. However, the same terminology and definitions are used, or expected to be used, by both project developers and mine operators when reporting resources, reserves and techno-economic study outcomes. This paper discusses how various stakeholders in the minerals industry (including competent/qualified persons, mining company leaders, investors, lenders and regulators), generally interpret the definitions of Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve categories in terms of the relative accuracy of the estimates, their link to techno-economic study levels and their contribution to life-of-mine (LOM) schedules. The paper examines the degree to which mining companies recognise, and apply, enhanced operational knowledge to reflect short-term views of the relative accuracy and confidence levels associated with publicly reported Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates and forecasts. Furthermore, this paper explores how this knowledge is applied to support ongoing Mineral Resource, and particularly Ore Reserve, generation and reporting. This paper is informed by public data and responses to an internal survey prepared by the authors and completed in 2021 by several mining companies.

A very small nation with large seabed resources requires a strategy. The simplest approach is to duplicate every step taken by the United Nations (UN), in its own leasing programme. In addition, the smaller nations must sell itself and its competitive offering. It is one thing just to await applicants and/ or tenders, another to work to make the leasing seem like a very good idea. This cap be achieved through publications, correspondence, meetings (such as the Underwater Mining Institute, but especially through pro-active planning, seeking the ideal technologies in both harvesting and processing. The ideal would be some combination that could begin quickly and on a small scale. It must be within the UN environmental guidelines. To meet the "quick and small criteria," simple harvesting and physical processing methods must be given the highest priority. Once these are satisfied, then marketing studies can be completed. There is, of course, a market for every element but only careful engineering and cost analysis will determine accessibility. What is required is a stepwise approach, gaining greater and greater credibility at each step. In fact, much planning can be done for very low cost. In the Cook Islands, the first crucial step was the East-West Center publication which pulled together all facts in one volume and which found the local resource to be richer in significant ways than Clarion-Clipperton. Most seem to believe that it could be many years before full production is possible, but this has been conventional wisdom for so long that it has taken on the suspicious aura of myth. Is it real? Have all possible recent technologies such as robotics and physical processing been taken into account? Either way, it is essential that a comprehensive approach be taken so that all factors from resource to market are considered as inter-related until a single business plan emerges. When that is in hand and when its profitability and risk levels are found to be credible, adequate investment funds are available.

"Mining is a "continuous" process of dependent breakage and materials handling stages, from the initial breakage of the in-situ rock, extraction from the pit or underground, and finally to the surface stockpile and downstream processing. Over time, underground and in-pit mining activities diverged into two separate disciplines, each using a variety of in-situ breakage techniques and surface activities, with processing techniques dependent on mineralogy or grades. This artificial separation of underground and open pit activities was exacerbated when the two became increasingly managed as separate cost centres rather than as an integrated unit. Mass mining essentially began in 1903 when metallurgist Daniel Jackling initiated the world’s first open pit, mining system at the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper deposit in Utah. The term mass mining has since been construed to mean large open pits and cave mining methods, including their variants. These methods are largely non-selective, involving the mass extraction of a deposit irrespective of the uneven distribution of grade and mineralogy. The advantages of mass mining have historically applied mostly to low grade, large scale deposits. With the depletion of mineral reserves closer to the surface, however, new deposits are deeper, lower grade and mixed with more impurities. These and other factors make extraction more difficult and costly. Mass mining is moving rapidly into a new and less certain environment where revolutionary changes are required to effectively deal with future challenges which are technical, economic and environmental (licence to operate). This keynote address presents current initiatives being considered for the next generation of both underground and surface mass mining systems in order to significantly reduce lead times and mining costs (CAPEX and OPEX), substantially increase productivity and meet license to operate requirements. The address is designed to solicit discussion on how better integration of mining and processing can become a platform for these next generation of mass mining systems and can also help the industry deal with the future challenges."

Mechanical damage leads to the increase of effective stress of sediments, and pore closure hinders the discharge of methane gas. Ignoring the influence of mechanical damage leads to an excessive prediction of hydrate gas production. Therefore, a fully coupled model considering mechanical damage-chemical decomposition-gas-water two-phase seepage-temperature was developed in this study, and the model was verified by Masuda experiment. Based on the fully coupled model, the temporal and spatial evolution of the whole process of hydrate decomposition under the influence of three initial absolute permeabilities, three pressure drops and three water saturations were considered. The results showed that: • The gas production rate reached the peak value in a short time after depressurisation, and the peak value increased with the increase of the absolute initial permeability. The larger the initial absolute permeability was, the faster the damage variable reached the peak value. The porosity increased gradually before the damage variable reached its peak, and the gas flowed more easily. • When the pressure drop was low, the hydrate remained stable in solid form. As the pressure drop increased, the hydrate gradually began to decompose. The greater the pressure drop was, the faster the initial decomposition rate of the hydrate was. So the damage variable increased rapidly and the porosity increased continuously, resulting in a large gas production rate at the initial stage of decomposition. • The larger the initial water saturation was, the smaller the effective stress wss, resulting in the slow growth of the damage variable and the small change of porosity.While the gas relative permeability was small, it resulted in a smaller gas production rate, and hydrate decomposition was slower. • The damage variable showed a process of rapid growth first, then slowly increased to the peak, and then gradually decreased to a stable state. When the damage was considered, the hydrate decomposition time to the steady state was longer, and the gas production was about 80.68 per cent of that without considering the damage.
