Mining was the first economic activity carried out in Cuba, by the colonial conquerous, i.e. gold extraction from rivers and use of asphalt to calk their ships; however, due to different historic reasons only a limited development took place in this field during the colonial domination. During the republican period beginning early in this century, other interests lead to a larger scale exploitation of some known deposits. From the beginning of the century up to the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, not less than the following figures were extracted of some Cuban minerals: Refractory Chromium 3,300,000t Manganese 7,650,000 t Copper 9,000,000 t Iron 22,000,000 t Nickel 150,000 t (Ni oxide and sulphide These productions were practically directed to cover the demands of the U.S., industry and some-times these Cuban ores were almost the sole suppliers of the market.

Abstract: Action of certain strains of bacteria has been implicated as a significant factor in the oxidation of ore deposits. Other bacteria are thought to be significant in the formation of syngenetic sedimentary ores and in supergene enrichment processes. A normal soil/ground-water regime provides all of the necessary pH and Eh conditions for several groups of bacteria which influence the sulfur cycle in nature. Limiting concentrations of nutrients such as sulfate ions can determine whether a particular microbial species is active at a given place. In the present study, ground water was analyzed from a mineralized area and from a presumed barren area. Trace metal content of the ground water gave no well defined clue as to the presence of a sulfide ore deposit. Sulfide producing bacteria (presumably sulfate users) were found in water from about 50% of wells sampled in the mineralized area and in about 30% of samples from the barren area. These bacteria are readily detected and may provide a useful tool for regional geochemical recon-naissance. Bacterially produced sulfide ions can remove metals such as copper and zinc from solution thus complicating the interpretation of hydrogeochemical prospecting.

About five years ago we showed that it is possible to use the spectral in- formation in the light emitted by the off-gas flame of a PS converter for on-line production control. Very recently measurements have been performed using improved optical equipment and data evaluation software, resulting in both improved accuracy and the establishment of new optical process parameters. Using the optical signals the slag heats could be stopped at a predetermined Cu content of the white metal with an accuracy of +0.2% Cu m the range 74-78% Cu. A good correlation was found between the slag composition and optical data, providing a possibility for on-line monitoring of the SiO2 content of the slag. The measurements indicate the possibility of predicting the optimum end-point of the copper-making stage and having real time information on the impurity removal. Factors influencing the optical parameters, such as blowrate, Pb content, temperature etc. will be discussed.

The coal mining industry is now faced with new regulatory requirements that limit the discharge of chlorides into receiving streams. To meet these new regulatory standards for treated mine water, a zero liquid waste approach was developed using advanced treatment technologies. "Eliminating the environmental threat caused by waste effluent containing magnesium sulfate derived from the process of nickel laterite sulfuric acid leaching and subsequent nickel precipitation is always a focus in the metallurgy field. A new flowsheet whose procedures include vaporization, crystallization, two stages precipitation of magnesium, causticizing treatment of filtrate and ammonia recycle was investigated. Both the details of the flowsheet and its application are described in this article. It is confirmed to be an effective and economical method to prevent the pollution by the waste effluent, simultaneity, a series of magnesium products recovered during the process own good economic returns.IntroductionSulfuric acid leaching is the conventional procedure of extraction valuable metals from ores in hydrometallurgy field. During the process of nickel laterite sulfuric acid leaching, several metals, including Ni, Co, Al Mn, Fe, Mg etc., migrate into the leachate in the form of soluble metal sulfate. After subsequent procedure of purification, precipitation of Ni and Co and neutralization, an enormous stream of waste effluent which contains a concentration of approx. 15-40g/L Mg is exhausted. Such solution containing magnesium sulfate is toxic, which causes diarrhea for both human and animals. On the other hand, large amount of sulfate acid was consumed during the process of leaching by the compound of Mg, which increases cost of a hydro nickel plant.In arid areas, the waste effluent mentioned above is treated via evaporate pond owning large acreage, which needs not only the appropriate meteorologic condition, but occupies much land. In coastal areas, it is directly discharged to the sea, which probably deteriorates ecological system of offshore strip. The most widespread method to treat with the waste effluent is neutralization by lime cream, the residues of which containing magnesium hydroxide and gypsum are transported to residues pool. Neutralization is a simple process, but it never recycles the Mg and sulfate anion into new application, meanwhile, the residues are potential threat to the environment."

Several heavy metal separation techniques are currently being developed for soil remediation at various Department of Defense and Department of Energy (DOE) Facilities. The majority of these techniques involve a wet process using water, PH modifiers or other compounds. The United States Naval Academy (USNA) has developed a dry process for heavy metal separation. The process uses air classification technology to concentrate the metal contaminant into a fraction of the soil. The advantages of this dry process are that it creates no contaminated by product and uses commercially available technology. The USNA process is based on using a Gayco-Reliance air classifier. Tests have been conducted with the system at the Naval Academy and the University of Nevada-Reno (UNR). The USNA tests used soil from the Nevada Test Site mixed with bismuth at a concentration of 500-1000 ppm. The UNR tests used soil from four DOE sites mixed with uranium oxides and plutonium at an activity level of 100-700 pCi per gram. Concentration of activities and volume reduction percentages are presented for the various soils and contaminants tested.

The precipitation and removal of arsenic from process waters can be accomplished with addition of lanthanum chloride alone or in conjunction with ferric sulfate. The long term stability of these corresponding precipitated compounds is critical from the disposal stand-point. In this paper the characterization of ferric, lanthanum and lanthanum-ferric arsenate compounds formed at room temperature in acidic and alkaline pH is presented. The characterization techniques used included zeta potential, XRD and SEM. Zeta potential measurements of ferric and lanthanum hydroxides in the presence of arsenate indicate that oxyanions of arsenate are chemically adsorbed onto the positively charged surfaces of these hydroxides. In alkaline pH there is desorption of arsenate species from the ferric hydroxide surface, hence the product is thought to be unstable. On the contrary, lanthanum arsenate is stable in alkaline pH. XRD patterns show that the ferric arsenate formed in acidic and alkaline pH is amorphous, whereas lanthanum arsenate and lanthanum-ferric arsenate formed in acidic and alkaline pH are crystalline.

LKAB's ores have specific mineralogical properties that make them especially suitable for the production of super-grade concentrates. Conditions are particularly good for this purpose at Malmberget, where a concentrate for high-purity sponge iron production has been produced for many years. Until 1978 the approximate assay was 71.2 % Fe and 0.45 % SiO2. Since then the assays have been improved by process modifications to approximately 71.5 % Fe and 0.20 % SiO2. Scope exists for still further improvement. In recent years the production of fractioned concentrates has been started. The material lies within the size range 74-125 µm and the approximate chemical analysis is 71.6 % Fe and 0.30 % SiO2. Other special products are under discussion. The Malmberget ores are also suitable for the production of high-purity direct reduction pellets with a SiO2 content below 1 %.

"The Ostwald ripening and growth and coarsening of the secondary dendrite arm are studied using a phase-field model. The phase-field parameters are obtained at a thin interface limit proposed by Kim et al. In Ostwald ripening analysis, the difference of the concentration due ·to· the curvature effect is shown. The third power of the average particle radius Rav is proportional to time and the ripening constant shows a good agreement with the value by Deppers et al. The particle radii distribution shows the transition behavior to attain a self-similar stationary shape. The growth and coarsening behavior of the secondary dendrite arm is also analyzed using a phase-field model. The estimated arm spacing and its dependence on time are in good agreements with experimental data.IntroductionThe ripening or coarsening process controls the microstructure during the late stage of solidification. The ripening phenomena are recognized firstly by the Ostwald [1]. The first quantitative analysis for the Ostwald ripening in the limit of vanishing solid fraction was provided by Lifshitz, Slyozov and Wagner (LSW) [2,3]. In their study, that the mean radius grows proportional to the cubic root of time and the size distribution of precipitations shows a ""self-similar"" shape are shown. Most of the studies for the Ostwald ripening confirm or predict these two general rules above. In case of finite solid fraction, the general rules are observed but the ripening constant is larger and the self-similar shape is wider than the LSW prediction respectively [4-6]. To analyze· the high solid fraction system, the theories that consider the solute field correlation are proposed [4,7-8]. In the theory, however, since the particle is treated as the point, the effect of the concentration field deviation from the monopole field should be taken into account. Recently the numerical simulation, in which not only diffusive transportation of solute but also convection effect is considered, has been done using a phase-field model [9]."

Water & Earth Technologies, Inc. (WET), Habitat Management, Inc. (HMI) and Chevron Mining, Inc. (CMI) together developed a solution for reclaiming steep southwest facing slopes in mining Area 12C that have historically been prone to excessive erosion, low vegetation establishment and continuing maintenance. Area 12C is located in the east wing of the Chevron McKinley Coal Mine, 27 miles northwest of Gallup, New Mexico, on Navajo Nation land administered by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Mining in this area was completed in May of 2007. Challenges encountered for this reclamation project included the need to reclaim graded material on a slope of 18-35% with southwest facing aspect, the presence of undisturbed rock outcropping that needed to be avoided during reclamation, the operational need to limit bulldozer pushes and the inability to import or export additional materials for construction. Two different reclamation alternatives were considered for Area 12C. The first alternative would use a traditional reclamation approach including three levels of draining terraces designed to convey water on a 3% slope to a single riprapped down drain. Terracing and down drains have been used to reclaim areas with similar terrain conditions elsewhere at the McKinely Mine and have failed to adequately control erosion (Williamson 2006). Terrace overtopping and down drain blowouts have been issues in maintenance and functionality for the mine. Maintenance routines consist of cleaning out terraces where they have filled in with sediment and repairing damaged or blown out terraces and down drains.

The research and development of new, more selective collectors in order to improve flotation efficiency represent one of the main priorities in the development of innovative technologies pertaining to flotation separation of various substances and minerals. The use of collectors’ mixtures is considered as the universal instrument for ensuring necessary proportion of chemically and physically sorbed collecting reagents in every individual case. Currently hard-dressed, refractory ores and man-made raw materials, which are characterized by low content of valuable components, fine dissemination of mineral assemblages and similar technological properties of constituent minerals, are widely involved in the recycling processes. The possibility of processing tailings, which are left after flotation beneficiation, has been considered in the case study of tailings of the Zhezkazgan beneficiation plant and the Tishinsk copper ore deposit with utilization of the modified multifunctional flotation reagents. Modified poly-functional collector is the mixture of composite Aerofloat, TC-1000 and butyl xanthate. Reactants ratio is 1:1:3. The advantage of the suggested flotation reagents is that they are composed of two polar groups and have a long hydrocarbon radical. This structure, being in the water during flotation process, plays a dual role: first, as a collector adsorbing on the mineral surface it produces metal complexes with polar groups in the form of bridges; second, apolar radicals flocculate valuable slimed components, thereby intensifying flotation process. It has been shown that flotation of Zhezkazgan tailings with utilization of the lesser modified reagent amount compared to butyl xanthate has enabled to produce crude copper concentrate with 13.0 % copper grade and 80.22 %recovery. Compared to the baseline technology, copper content of crude concentrate has been increased by 5.1 % and the recovery by 31.4 %. It is shown that tailings flotation of the Tishinsky field by applying modified collector allows for increase of the of useful components extraction in a collective concentrate with: copper 9.63 %, lead for 8.41%, zinc 9.2 %, iron 2.73 %, gold 3.57 %.

A forecast of the consequences of our techniques and goods produced, at least a technical assessment will be demanded from us as an industry. The hydrometallurgical winning of zinc is therefore at a crossroads. New processes promise not only better economics, better maintenance of resources and simpler operation, but also more harmony with nature. Pressure leaching promises to eliminate roasting and thus one complete process step. The hematite process solves a difficult and always costly iron problem. HOA opens a possible road to a totally new ,generation of electrolysis. Zinc has a long tradition behind it. Its? importance is as great as ever-. There is still room for new production developments. In my estimation there are good chances for successful new techniques? which will benefit our whole industry. Zinc is a modern and forward-looking metal.

"ABSTRACTCoal Mountain Operations is the newest of Fording Coal’s operations although it is the oldest in terms of its historical production. In October, 1994, Fording purchased the former Corbin Creek/Byron Creek Mine. The mine is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 150 air kilometers from Calgary, Alberta. It was first developed in 1905 and has gone through a variety of owners in its 90-year history.This paper will deal with the remobilization strategy and the mining plans for the operation which are being implemented to make this operation competitive in the world export coal market. IntroductionIn October 1994, following a due diligence process, Fording Coal Limited purchased Coal Mountain Operations from Corbin Creek Resources, an employee group which had previously owned the mine. The purchase awarded Fording Coal Limited with 100% of the assets, and control of all the coal leases at Coal Mountain.The mine is located in southeastern British Columbia, southeast of Sparwood at the hamlet of Corbin, (Fig. 1).Rehiring of laid-off employees started in November 1994, with mining activities also recommencing in November. The coal preparation plant was restarted in December with one shift, went to two shifts in January 1995, and had four-shift, full-time operation in April 1996."

As a continuation of previous work, further tests have been carried out to recover silver from the residues obtained in a zinc jarosite process. Selective flotation has been performed with different reagents, and ?cleaning steps have been introduced to upgrade the silver concentrate. Leaching of crude residues, as well as flotation tailings, has been carried out with cyanide and thiourea. Finally, the different beneficiation methods are compared, and the industrial aspects? of their application are reviewed.

The extraction of gold and silver has been examined via the use of mixed halogens: chlorine and bromine. The reaction was performed in a brine of sodium chloride with a small amount of sodium bromide at 40-50°C, in an atmosphere of chlorine, at atmospheric pressure. The process takes advantage of the very high reactivity of bromine towards gold, while the higher oxidation capacity of chlorine leads to gold chloride as end product with recycling of bromine. Fast reaction rates are observed along with gold recovery at the level of 95%. Chlorine-consuming common elements are removed prior to chlorination.

Mr. Chairman, Fellow Keynoters, Ladies, and Gentlemen: It is purposed to consider the theme of this meeting, "The 1970's - Pivotal Decade for the Mineral Industries," from the particular -- some would say peculiar -- point of view of one engaged in mineral engineering education, and this coign of vantage prompts the textbookish subtitle, "Problems and Solutions (?) in Undergraduate Mineral Engineering Education." Three interrelated problems, or problem areas, will be presented and discussed, and where solutions seem to be emerging or seem worthy to be suggested, they will be identified. The three problems are: 1. The goals, and therefore the course requirements, of the undergraduate curricula are in question, 2. The unit costs of undergraduate education appear excessive to those who bear the charges, and 3. The social ambience of the day affects for the worse the work attitudes and the career motivation of both prospective and in-course students. The Need. - Any discussion of these problems must bottom upon recognized national needs for minerals and a technologically sound minerals industry staffed by competent engineers, particularly at the exploration, development, and production levels, Fortunately, these needs have been recognized and to some extent quantified, and they are even now under further intensive study by some of the most competent members of our society and profession. The latter reference is, of course, to the current work of the National Commission on Materials Policy (U.S.A.) under the executive directorship of Dr. James Boyd. "Coniaurum Mines, Limited, hold nineteen claims in Tisdale township, in the Porcupine district, adjoining the McIntyre mine on the east. They extend for over a mile along the strike of the Hollinger-McIntyre 'break'. The property has been explored extensively along the ore zone both laterally and vertically. Workings have been carried to a depth of 5,500 feet, and nearly 50 miles of lateral workings (drifting and cross-cutting) have been driven to date in development and in gaining access to the orebodies.Production started at the Coniaurum in June 1928 and has continued without interruption. The morphological characteristics of the nickel particles electrodeposited from chloride dominant aqueous solution was investigated. The effects of the electrolyte constituents, the parameters for the electro-deposition on the morphology of the nickel particles were addressed. It is evidenced that not only the particle size but also the morphology of the deposited nickel particles strongly depend on the electrolyte constituents and technical operation conditions. The electro-crystallization mechanism of the metallic nickel particles deposited at high current density was elucidated. The ultra-fine nickel particles with flake, nodular or dendrite shape may be produced by controlling the duration for electro-deposition.

Cobalt is an essential metal considering its numerous industrial applications. The demand for the metal is increasing due to its wide range of use in, for example, rechargeable batteries and as an alloying element in super alloys. Cost effective production of Co is critical. Electrowinning from aqueous sulphate solutions is the preferred technology available for the production of Co. Attempts are being made to produce uniform, smooth and bright deposits of cobalt metal. Use of organic additives in the electrolytic bath improves current efficiency and deposit morphology of the metal. We investigated the effect of quaternary amines TEABr, TPABr and TBABr during cobalt electrowinning from aqueous sulphate solutions. Among the additives studied, TEABr yielded the best results. Smooth and bright deposits of cobalt were obtained at low concentration of TEABr (10 mg/L) maintaining a very high current efficiency of 99.6%. X-ray crystallography indicated that (100) is the most preferred plane of crystal growth.
