"Over the last five years, the authors have compiled a database of Short Encapsulation Pull Test (SEPT) evaluations from Interior Basin (Basin) coal mines. Typically, SEPT data are analyzed to obtain peak load carrying capacity per unit length of resin encapsulation designated as the ""Grip Factor,"" or GF. In a previous paper, ""An Analysis of Short Encapsulation Bolt Pull Test (SEPT) Data From Interior Basin Coal Mines,"" authors analyzed tangent value of the load-displacement curve as Anchorage Stiffness at 50% (AS-50) of the peak load, or GF value, to assess reinforcement potential of an installed bolt system. This paper attempts to correlate the secant AS VALUES (of SEPT on 6 ft (1.8 m) long installed bolts at a lower load of about four tons from several different mines in the Basin with their MSHA-approved primary support requirements. Since the current regulatory environment requires plan changes dynamically to ensure that roof falls are minimized, the authors hypothesize that the practiced roof control plan must meet the minimum requirement of adequately supporting immediate roof strata. The analyses are based on 181 SEPT studies performed by Minova professionals. Analyses indicate a macrolevel correlation for both roof support density and roof support cost that may have the potential to be used by mine operators to compare their performance with other mines in the area. Limitations of the analyses include ignoring mining depth, mining height and required secondary supports as part of the requirements for a roof control plan. The authors recommend additional analyses to develop this concept further to develop guidelines that can be confidently used by coal companies.INTRODUCTIONPartially- and fully-grouted bolts are extensively used in coal mines for roof support as part of MSHA-approved roof control plans. Since grouted bolts have a larger area of contact with the rock, they can develop much greater anchorage capacity than conventional expansion shell (point-anchored) bolts. Load transfer characteristics and interaction mechanics between steel rebar, grout and rock mass around the bolt hole for grouted bolts are generally assessed in the laboratory or field though short-encapsulation pull tests (SEPT), which have been extensively researched by Aziz and Jalalifar (2005), Aziz (2004a), Serbousek and Signer (1987), Signer (1990), and Mark et al. (2002), among others. In a SEPT, about 12 in. (30 cm) of bolt length is typically encapsulated in resin and a pull test is performed to collect load-displacement data prior to failure and, in some cases, post-failure. A typical load-displacement data set for a bolt is shown in Figure 1. SEPT characteristics are designated by peak load carrying capacity, or grip factor, which is the peak load carrying capacity per unit length of resin encapsulation. SEPT is routinely used to assess anchorage performance characteristics of different lithologies overlying a coal seam to identify type of bolt, bolt diameter, length and spacing across and along an excavation. Anchorage stiffness, or AS, at any load may also be calculated as the tangent or secant value of the slope of the load displacement curve at a particular load level. Anchorage Stiffness characteristics of bolts from SEPT data have typically not been considered in any depth until recently (Chugh et al., 2014; Chugh et al., 2015)."

"Smelting of copper concentrates in the flash smelter generates a flue dust stream that contains a substantial amount of copper and accumulates more than half of the arsenic input to the smelter. In view of its high copper content flue dust recirculation to the flash smelter is common practice. Globally traded copper concentrates are affected by ever increasing arsenic contents and cause an increasing circulating arsenic load in flash smelter operation. Control of the arsenic level in the smelter slag becomes a challenge. This interaction of arsenic loaded copper feedstock, need for flue dust recirculation and slag quality control call for possibilities to reduce the arsenic load of the recirculated flue dust stream.The technology of partial roasting is known from pre-treatment of copper concentrates before smelting, and gold concentrates before cyanide leaching, to remove the harmful element arsenic. The partial roasting technology can be adapted for use in the purification of the flue dust. A major challenge for flue dust treatment is its extremely fine particle size compared to usual concentrates. For this reason Outotec developed a new process, which allows handling of such fine flue dust. This process solution provides an efficient possibility to reduce the arsenic burden in copper smelter operations.The suggested process aims at reducing the arsenic load to the smelter by treating the flue dust prior to recirculation to the smelter. The presented results are based on test work in the Outotec R&D-centre in Frankfurt. It is possible to remove 80-85% of the contained arsenic and to collect it in an arsenic trioxide residue with a concentration above 90%. The final off gas contains SO2 from decomposition of sulphates that are contained in the flue dust. The off gas stream is relatively small. We assume that it is possible to combine the off gas stream with other smelter process gas streams and to treat it in an existing sulphuric acid plant. Coal is used as fuel and as reductant to reduce pentavalent arsenate to trivalent arsenite. Arsenite can be kept in gas form at temperatures above 450°C. This permits separation of a calcine stream with arsenic levels of 0.2 – 0.3%, which is recirculated to the furnace.Outotec has a wide range of roasting testing facilities from lab-scale to pilot-scale. Outotec has both capability to modify and adapt technology to specific ore or concentrate requirements, but also the necessary infrastructure in its research centers in Frankfurt and Pori to do appropriate validation tests in lab and pilot scale size plants."

Como resultado, se recomienda desarrollar un software integral de toda la planta concentradora —chancado, molienda, flotación y eliminación de agua— con diferentes tipos de circuito, en un solo sistema (enfoque holístico); además de migrar a un modelo de servicio en la nube, con el objeto de poder contar con completa disponibilidad.

Before specifications are discussed it may be well to define the term "Mineral Aggregates." Professor K. B. Woods (1) defined "Mineral Aggregate--An aggregation of sand, gravel, crushed stone, slag, or other material of mineral composition used in combination with a binding medium to form bituminous and portland cement concrete, macadam, mastic, mortar, plaster, etc., or alone as in railroad ballast, filter beds, and various manufacturing processes, such as fluxing, etc. " This definition is too all inclusive for the purposes of this paper; therefore, this discussion will be confined to specifications for natural aggregates which means sand and gravel and crushed stone, and limited primarily to coarse aggregate which is aggregate larger than one-quarter inch in size. To the uninitiated, this may seem to be a very limited subject on an unimportant material. However, aggregates are essential in all types of construction. The San Gabriel Valley contains some of the richest and most extensive sand and gravel deposits in California. Operating quarries within the San Gabriel area mine more than 15 million tons of high quality aggregate per year. This represents about 45 percent of the total mined in the greater Los Angeles area, one of the nation's largest aggregate markets and producing regions. Popular opposition to continued aggregate production in the San Gabriel Valley is high, especially in the city of Irwindale where 40 per-cent of the city's property is made up of "excavated holes," some 150-200 feet deep. Reclamation of 70 years of mining is now an almost impossible task. Zoning regulations have the effect of depleting these vast reserves rapidly by changing the definition of total reserves to include only "legally minable reserves." All but two or three of the aggregate mines now operating will be depleted or zoned out of business by the year 2000. Some studies indicate that there will be no aggregate mining operations by 1995. Recent studies show a drastic change in land use patterns within this valuable mineral resource area over the past 20 years. The San Gabriel Valley is a classic example of the lack of adequate regional planning with regard to urban development in MRA's and represents a "too little, too late" effort by local government and industry.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for beneficiating platinum-palladium ores from the Stillwater Complex, Montana. Results of bench-scale and pilot-scale studies employing froth flotation to recover sulfide concentrates containing platinum-palladium values from a serpentinized ore are presented. Best results in the pilot mill were obtained with a sodium isobutyl xanthate-normal dodecyl mercaptan col-lector combination at a natural pH of 8.2. A rougher concentrate con-taining 1.7 oz/ton Pt and 4.7 oz/ton Pd was prepared. Recoveries of platinum and palladium were 96 pet and 86 pet, respectively. Batch cleaner flotation of rougher concentrates yielded concentrates contain-ing 3.7 oz/ton Pt and 9.8 oz/ton Pd.

Conventionally, beneficiation in Indian coal washeries is done using dense medium cyclones upto the size of 0.5 mm. Coal fines below 0.5 mm size are extensively cleaned by froth flotation. There are many problems associated with flotation of Indian coals, e.g. poor response of coal particles to flotation, misplacement of fine high-ash material to froth, loss of good quality coarser coals (within ?0.5 mm size range) to tailing streams, high cost of reagents, water contamination, etc. In addition, sophisticated control systems for efficient management of the fines washing circuits are needed. Thus, there is an escalation in the capital and processing costs. In view of these facts, studies were carried out to establish the cleaning potential of dense medium cyclones for beneficiation of fine coal down to a size of 0.1 mm, essentially aimed at reducing the load on fine coal circuits mainly comprising of flotation. ROM Coal (in the size range of -2 + 0.1 mm) obtained from JogtaOCM,Jharia coalfield possessing relatively low ash (about 21%) was used in this study. Purpose for using low ash coal was to further lower, its ash content down to 8% which is comparable, to the ash content of imported coal. After characterization studies, nine tests were carried out on the prepared feed sample for its beneficiation using a dense medium cyclone of non-conventional design (very low cone angle and longer barrel), by varying its apex and vortex finder diameters. The efficiency of separation has been evaluated using Tromp curves. It could be established that it is possible to produce a clean coal of 8% ash, with Ep value of 0.044, using Jogta OCM coal by treating it in a modified dense medium cyclone. The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis consists of the formation of long-chain hydrocarbons by passage of carbon monoxide-hydrogen mixtures over metal catalysts, usually based on iron, cobalt, nickel, or ruthenium, at temperatures in the range 180°-300° C., and at pressures of 1-15 atmospheres. Although the reaction has been known and studied for more than 20 years, the mechanism by which it occurs is still poorly understood. One approach to understanding is to consider the effect upon the course of the synthesis of variations in each of the important operating variables. Consideration of the experimental data pertaining to these variables may suggest an over-all picture describing the synthesis - a picture which, in turn, would have to be consistent with all the known facts. The first part of this paper will be concerned with such a consideration of operating variables; the second portion will discuss recent work pertaining to the role of metal carbides as intermediates in the synthesis.

Major sources and reserves of Cb/Nb, Ta, REE, Y, Sc, Zr, Hf, Cu, apatite and vermiculite may be concentrated in primary and secondary minerals associated with different stages and depths of emplacement in carbonatite complexes and kindred alkalic intrusive rocks. Exploration targets include: apatite and pyrochlore (Nb) in the plutonic and hypabyssal core and ring-dikes: bastnaesite (REE), strontianite, barite and fluorite in hydrothermal veins and cone-sheets (subvolcanic setting): thortveitite (Sc,Y) and vermiculite in metasomatized aureoles (fenites): high grade eluvial deposits of apatite and pyrochlore, and secondary REE, Nb, Ti. and V-minerals in supergene and weathered zones.

"In the present study, the recovery of rare earth elements (REE) in the nitrophosphate process of fertilizer production is investigated. The apatite has been recovered from iron ore tailings by flotation. After digestion of apatite in concentrated nitric acid, Ca(NO3)2.4H2O is first separated by cooling crystallization and then the REEs are recovered by precipitation. Optimum conditions in these steps have been determined in a previous study. The precipitate mainly consists of CaHPO4.2H2O and REE phosphates.In the present study, selective dissolution and re-precipitation have been studied in order to obtain a precipitate that is more concentrated in REEs. The precipitate was selectively dissolved in nitric and phosphoric acid at different acidities (pH 6 to 0) with the liquid /solid ratio of 100 mL/g. It is shown that most of the CaHPO4.2H2O and other calcium containing compounds will be dissolved at pH 2 while the REE phosphates are not dissolved above a pH of approximately 2. Thus, by partial dissolution of the REE precipitate at pH 2.5 most of the solid calcium phosphates will be dissolved and the remaining solid phase, which is more concentrated in REEs, can be filtered off as a fairly concentrated REE solid mass and the liquor can be recycled back to recover more P nutrients. Alternatively, the REE enriched precipitate was dissolved completely in nitric acid and re-precipitated again by addition of ammonium hydroxide to pH 1.2. A chemical equilibrium software, MEDUSA (Puigdomenech, 2013) has been used to evaluate the experimental results and to estimate the optimum conditions for selectively dissolving the precipitate."

"In flotation research, relatively little attention has been paid to understanding particle-bubble detachment phenomena compared with attachment processes. With CFD models now incorporating attachment/detachment kinetics, it is important to obtain more accurate formulations for detachment probability. The formula most often used is due to Bloom and Heindel (2002) who proposed that the rate of detachment would equal the product of detachment frequency, as previously estimated by other authors, and probability of destabilization, as estimated previously by Schulze. These two factors both account for the balance between stabilization and destabilization forces, so the product accounts for this effect twice. An integrated procedure has been followed to estimate the overall detachment rate by re-analysing the process. In this analysis, detachment rate is calculated as the frequency of eddy-aggregate interactions (or “collisions”) sufficiently energetic to cause detachment. The Bond number analysis of Schulze has been incorporated into the turbulence frequency analysis of previous authors in an integrated way. The new formulation has essentially the same type of dependencies as the previous model, but gives a lower detachment frequency. Detachment frequency has been calculated using the new formula for conditions relevant to an industrial flotation cell. INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the effectiveness of froth flotation for separating different minerals is limited to the particle size range of approximately 10–100 mm (Trahar & Warren, 1976; Trahar, 1981). Fine particles tend to follow fluid streamlines around bubbles limiting the likelihood of bubble–particle collision, while coarse particles can be more easily detached from bubbles before collection can be achieved.Phenomenological models have been developed to quantify the physico-chemical aspects of flotation in order to better understand factors affecting these limitations, and to suggest ways of broadening the window of feasible flotation. Koh and Schwarz (2008) have incorporated these models into computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of flotation cells, which have then been used for design and scale-up purposes (Schwarz et al., 2015). The models are based on dividing the process of bubble–particle interaction into three subprocesses: collision, adhesion and detachment. Of these, the hydrodynamics of bubble–particle collision and the probability of adhesion have been studied most extensively, while the dynamics of detachment have received relatively little attention from investigators."

In a previous study, various pyrite depressants were examined to improve the flotation performance of a copper-sulfide ore. Optimal results from this study were used to examine the effect of elevation on recovery and grade. Tests were conducted at elevations of 3350, 1735, 610 and -760 metres, consisted of five repetitive experiments for statistical analysis, and were performed both with and without airflow control. Tests were also performed in a glove box at Montana Tech to mimic the pressure conditions. Results indicate that both recovery and grade are dependent on pressure via bubble size and airflow suggesting that pressurised flotation cells should be considered for operations, particularly those at high elevation. Economics are extremely favourable for implementation because ensuing capital expenses are inconsequential with minimal time for return-on-investment.

Genstar's underground mine at Texas, MD experienced a failure of the mine roof and subsequent damage to an underground backfill caused by surface floodwaters. A hydraulic backfilling program was developed in house to stabilize temporary repairs to the mine roof, replace 2300 yards of pneumatically stowed backfill, and complete a permanent repair to the mine roof. A flowable backfill material was developed, tested, and later marketed as the result of experience gained during this project. In addition, Genstar personnel developed backfilling techniques to meet the requirements of the repairs and completed work without the additional expense of non company services or contractors.

Mixed uranium and refractory metal carbide systems have been proposed for space nuclear power and propulsion applications. Solid-core space nuclear reactors could be utilized for low- earth-orbit (LEO) to geosynchronous-earth-orbit (GEO) transfers, manned missions to the moon or mars, and orbiter missions to the outer planets. However, these high performance space nuclear reactors present some challenging materials engineering requirements for operating in a high temperature, high radiation, and hot hydrogen environment. Since the RoverNERVA programs were concluded in 1973, significant advances in ultrahigh temperature materials technology have been made which can be applied to the development of an advanced solid-core nuclear fuel. Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) was first studied in the U.S. beginning in the mid-1950's during the RoverNERVA programs. During that time, about 20 rocket reactors were built and tested. More recently, Russian nuclear rocket reactor tests with pseudo-ternary carbide nuclear fuels (U, Zr, Nb)C and (U, Zr, Ta)C have been operated at temperatures as high as 3300 K for one hour. This study examined the processing parameters for fabricating the pseudo-ternary carbide, (U, Zr, Nb)C.

Mine design and selection of ore processing capacity depend upon a correct estimate of the grade-tonnage distribution. The estimate must reflect what can be recovered and processed. The McCoy/Cove operation in central Nevada, USA, is a gold and silver mine. Case studies of recoverable reserve estimation for gold and silver were made using multiple indicator kriging and the log-affine variance correction. From this model, the grade-tonnage distribution was constructed. Optimal pits were generated by utilizing the distribution, and the results were compared with the pit generated by ordinary kriging. Studies indicate that the proposed method for multi-metal recoverable reserve estimation is more accurate than ordinary kriging in terms of both tons and the grade. Using recoverable reserves for mine design will maximize global recovery of mineral resources.

This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum?s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill ? a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was ?proof of concept? and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years. Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity ? this paper describes the projects? roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs.

Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ?in-world? exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing the silica dust exposure of equipment operators at surface mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated various factor effects on enclosed cab air filtration system performance. Factors experimen­tally investigated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading (filter flow resistance), recirculation filter use and wind velocity effects on cab penetra­tion (inside to outside cab concentration ratio). Adding an intake pressurizer fan to the filtration system was also investigated. Results indicate that the intake filter efficiency and recirculation filter were the two most influential factors on cab penetration. Use of a recirculation filter significantly reduced cab penetration over the intake air filter by itself due to the multiplicable filtration of the cab interior air. Cab penetration was also affected to a lesser extent by intake filter loading and air leakage. Adding an intake pressurizer fan notably increased intake airflow and cab pressure while providing only minor changes to cab penetration.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the White Bird concentrator, Picher, Okla., is one of a series on milling practices being published by the Bureau of Mines. The concentrator of the White Bird mine, Canam Metals Corporation, is located in almost the geographical center of the present Picher mining cam' in the Tri-State district, one-half mile east of the town of Picher, 1 mile south of the Kansas State line, and about 18 miles west of the Missouri State line.

"Occurrences of fluorite on the Packard property were first examined by an engineer3/ of the Bureau of Mines in July 1943 as the result of receipt of an application for an access road. In August of the same year the showings were examined by a geologist4/ of the Federal Geological Survey. The property was again examined by an engineer5/ of the Bureau of Mines in March 1944. This last examination resulted in a proposal that access be gained by construction of a truck trail and that the Bureau of Mines undertake to explore the fluorite showings.The truck trail was constructed by the Public Roads Administration, which began the work on February 17, 1945, and completed it 8 days later.The Bureau of Mines exploratory program was completed on May 16, 1945. It consisted of stripping overburden, trenching, test pitting, tunneling, sampling, and topographic mapping.In addition to being described in some detail, the extent of the work as well as results are shown in accompanying tables and figures.Mrs. Rhoda A. Packard, Mrs. Nora 1. Cline, and C. B. Pettingill, all of Tonto Basin, Ariz., own the property, which comprises four contiguous, unpatented lode mining claims recorded at Globe, Ariz., as the Walnut and the Bluebird 2, 3, and 4. The claims are situated in T. 6 N., R. 11 E., Gila County. David L. Roscoe of Tombstone, Ariz., holds a lease and option to purchase.Access to the property is by Highway 88 from Globe, 34 miles to Roosevelt, thence 24 miles by a graded county road along the west side of Roosevelt Lake to Tonto Basin. Here the Greenback Ranch road, constructed by the Forest Service and maintained by the county, crosses Tonto Creek and continues easterly to the foothills. The truck trail leaves the road 8.5 miles east of Tonto Basin and runs 2.5 miles in a southerly direction to the property. (Fig. 1.)The fluorite deposits lie in and along a small canyon in a rough, rocky area at an altitude of about 3,400 feet, Vegetation is scant and of the usual desert variety. The summer climate is dry and hot and the winter climate moderate. Rainfall at the Forest Service Station in Tonto Basin was 11.4 inches from May 1944 through March 1945."
