Classification of mineral resource estimates is one of the most important responsibilities of the Competent Person. In recent years, classification decisions have been driven more by the detailed block-by-block attributes generated by the now widely applied geostatistical estimation methods, and less by a general geological overview. This is increasingly resulting in æspotted dogÆ outputs, in which blocks of Inferred Resources or unclassified material separate blocks of Measured and/or Indicated Resources, or individual drill holes are surrounded by annuli of Measured and Indicated Resource blocks. Not only are such outputs potentially misleading, since they ignore fundamentals such as continuity of geology and mineralisation between drill holes and the imprecise nature of resource estimation, they can also cause substantial problems for engineers undertaking mine designs and estimating ore reserves, particularly for underground mines. Competent Persons for mineral resources must keep in mind the purpose of their work, and should use their experience and judgement to avoid or smooth out æspotted dogÆ classifications, providing a result commensurate with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence. For their part, ore reserve Competent Persons must understand the resource estimation and classification process, and should question resource classifications that are not consistent with the level of geological and resource estimation confidence.

Historically, presplitting has been considered effective in reducing the impact of blast vibrations on highwalls. However, it remains a debated topic: how significantly can it protect highwalls, and is it worth the cost and effort to implement presplit blasting techniques? In hard rock, presplit blasting can leave half-barrels on the highwalls, clearly demonstrating its usefulness. However, in a fractured rock mass, the half-barrels from presplit blasting may not appear in most cases, leading to questions about its role in protecting highwalls. Previous studies in the literature used geophones to measure blast vibrations at far distances and could not ascertain the significant benefit of presplit blasting in reducing the impact of blast vibrations on highwalls. Additionally, no studies in the literature address the role of presplitting in alleviating blasting-released gas pressure that could penetrate joints and open new fractures in highwalls. Yang & Proulx (2019) and Yang et al. (2022) using near-field blast vibration monitoring of signature hole blasts have revealed that the peak particle velocity (PPV) of blast vibrations at a scaled distance of 1 m/kg^0.5 can be reduced by 50% or more for presplit-filtered vibrations. These results have been confirmed for both hard rock and fractured ground. In addition to summarizing the reduction in blast vibrations due to presplitting for both hard rock and a fractured rock mass, this paper demonstrates the relief of subsequent blasting gases after the detonation of blastholes. This is shown through video recordings of gas ejections from a row of empty previously fired presplit blastholes located 6 to 9 meters away from the detonation edge or final buffer row of a blasthole pattern. The results clearly show that presplitting not only lowers blast vibration PPV’s but also reduces the entry of the gases produced by the detonation process into rock fractures and or open joints.

Failures within hard rock underground excavations have historically been defined by a depth of failure, estimated in the field or through individual measurements, with a simplified failure geometry; such as 1/3 span, cubic or paraboloid. This simplified shape, volume and mass of failure is typically used to estimate in situ demand as a simplified discrete point. However, the highly variable failure geometry indicates simplified methods to estimate the mass can be erroneous in comparison to high precision LiDAR scans. Advances in technology have enabled the accurate capture of failure geometry and allow a far more accurate analysis of failures to be completed. This case study investigates a number of real-life failures to accurately define the failure geometry, the distribution of the failure parameters and compares this to traditional methodologies. This paper also outlines a suggested means of standardising failure geometry parameters whilst accounting for their variability.

The extraction and processing of metals and other minerals have played an important role in economic, political, and social development worldwide, from the early stages of prehistory to the present day (Gosner, 2020). In other words, mining has been a fundamental part of human civilization, providing the raw materials necessary for technological, infrastructure, and industrial advances. As society progresses, the importance of mining continues to grow, supporting the development of everything from the smallest electronic devices to the tallest skyscrapers (The Importance Of Mining In Modern Society, 2024). The mining industry is closely linked to a country’s economy and activities related to natural resources. The economy of a nation is connected to its extractive industries (Moreira & McMahon, 2014), which have seen dramatic growth in recent years (Pietrobelli et al., 2018). In a context of increasing demand for natural resources, driven by the development of emerging technologies, the expansion of infrastructure, and the foundation of engineering achievements for the coming decades (Importance Of Mining - Minerals Education Coalition, 2024), mining should focus efforts on global development, requiring a comprehensive approach to sustainability that addresses the planet’s needs and protects the well-being, primarily, of the communities and environments where mining operations take place (Figari, 2024). In these areas, diversity and inclusion should be promoted, thus fostering equitable and sustainable development. Speaking of sustainable development, diversity, and inclusion brings us to an interesting topic: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, which could serve as a key framework for fostering a strong social management culture in mining. The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals, n.d.). Companies have compelling reasons to align their actions with the SDGs, as their long-term success depends on healthy communities. This is a major challenge and requires collaborative efforts (Singh & Rahman, 2021). As Fraser (2021) mentions, achieving more sustainable outcomes may involve mining companies and communities working together collaboratively. This research proposes an innovative approach: Inclusive Mining for Sustainable Development, which aims not only to maximize economic profitability but also to promote social and environmental well-being by integrating the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), primarily focused on diversity and inclusion. This can be achieved through the implementation of a key value-added initiative for mining companies: the Creation and operation of a corporate volunteering program aimed at developing and executing inclusive practices to promote gender equality, the inclusion of local communities and indigenous peoples, and accessibility for people with disabilities. This proposal will educate employees and stakeholders about sustainability and promote concrete actions through corporate volunteering to strengthen the mining company’s commitment to community development, improve social relations, and advance toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, establishing the company as a global change agent.

The work of the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines may be considered to have had its beginning in April , 1909 , when H. H. Clark was , appointed electrical engineer in the U. S. Geological Survey. The first manuscript prepared by members of this section was Miners Circular 5, which was issued in October , 1911. During each succeeding year additional papers have been published dealing with questions relating to electrical safety. Since 1916 the electrical section has also conducted laboratory investigations on flame safety lamps and gas- detecting devices and has published reports relating thereto . The following selected list of publications covering safety studies and activities of the electrical section has been prepared for the convenience of those who wish to keep themselves advised concerning electrical safety matters . Technological advances in mine equipment and milling processes have enabled mining companies to exploit ever lower grades of ore. The result has been larger disturbances, greater volumes of waste, a complex web of infrastructure, and an overall trend toward mega projects that can extend over several square kilometers. This explosive growth in a mining operation’s disturbance footprint provokes an obvious question: What is it going to cost to reclaim all of this? At face value, this can be an enormous financial liability for a company, but since the timing of reclamation may be years in the future for many operations, these costs can be heavily discounted, thereby limiting the burden on the corporate balance sheet. Nonetheless, mining companies are eager to remove these liabilities as quickly as possible; conversely, regulators want assurance reclamation will, in fact, occur. How might one bridge these competing interests? Navigating the practical and financial requirements of a post-closure landscape requires foresight, judgement and assumptions; however, companies that do not adequately plan for these future expenditures when there is no offsetting income stream will likely face some difficult decisions. Simple risk analysis tools and utilizing the time value of money can help bring some clarity to this end-of-mine life phase.

1 Flotation Analogy To explain flotation in simpler terms the following analogy will be used. A factory (the flotation cell) manufactures a product (collector coated mineral). The product (collector coated mineral) is transported to market (the launder). A truck (the frother) is used to transport the product (collector coated mineral) to the market (the launder). The truck (the frother) transports the product over a road (the froth bed). The truck (the frother) and product (collector coated mineral) are supported by tires (the air). 2 Assumptions This operating philosophy assumes that the correct collector dosage is present along with the correct particle size distribution, pH conditions, etc. and that the minimum required frother dosage is correct. 3 Collector Addition The collector addition as used at a flotation plant is based on dosage rate as determined by the amount of mineral value entering the concentrator. Collector is normally added at two points in the concentrator: The primary flotation circuit and staged addition in the rougher scavenger circuit. Surveys have shown that the staged collector addition provides an increase in the kinetics and increases the recovery of the valued mineral in the rougher scavenger circuit. 4 Frother 4.1 Frother Dosage As explained in the above analogy, frother can be likened to the truck that transports the product (collector coated mineral) to market (the launder). Just as you would not use a truck rated at 15 tonnes to transport a 20 tonne load, you cannot expect to transport coarse minerals to the launder when there is insufficient frother present. Frother dosage must always be at, or above the minimum target. If less frother than the required minimum is used, then coarse mineral particles will not be supported and transported to launder where the mineral is recovered. To the naked eye the froth characteristics, even when insufficient frother is used, will appear to be correct. You cannot see the coarse particles that are not being recovered in the froth. (See Section 4.2 below for an explanation of why this occurs.)

"In 2012 the International Seabed Authority (ISA) established nine “Areas of Particular Environmental Interest” (APEIs) for consideration as future Marine Protected Areas to help preserve the biodiversity of life on the seabed within the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) between Baja California, Mexico, and the Hawaiian Islands. The CCZ is believed to have a high potential for future seabed mining operations. Areas under active exploration contracts in the CCZ, plus the areas currently reserved by the ISA for exploration by developing nations, comprise about 1.9 million km2 of seabed area. The currently designated APEIs consist of more than 1.4 million km2 of seabed. Each APEI includes a central primary conservation area of 200 X 200 km, surrounded by 100-km buffer areas on all sides. The 100-km buffers are intended as a very conservative spacing between the primary conservation area and potential mining activities in adjacent seabed. The selection of these nine 400 X 400 km APEIs, has been criticized as possibly not including sufficient representative habitat similar enough to the potential mining areas (identified currently as the exploration contract and reserved areas administered by the ISA within the region) to ensure protection of the biodiversity that might be impacted by mining.An area to the east of the existing exploration contracts and reserved areas is known to have substantial mineral deposits; it is very similar to the adjacent exploration contract areas in its geology, environmental setting, polymetallic nodule abundance and nodule metal content. Because it is located in the northeastern extreme of the CCZ, this area is also likely to have relatively high densities of benthic life, compared with benthic communities further westward within the CCZ. Many options for the designation of this APEI are possible, but the area designation must accommodate the boundaries of the Exclusive Economic Zones of Mexico and France.This paper discusses why the selected region in the eastern extreme of the CCZ is a good candidate for designation as a new APEI.Keywords: polymetallic nodules, Marine Protected Areas, Clarion-Clipperton Zone, Areas of Particular Environmental Interest"

Introduction In 1938, a survey conducted by the Ontario Mining Association revealed a rather startling fact. Injuries incurred in chute pulling were more numerous than those from any other single cause. This report prompted Mr. W. B. Paton, then Inspector of Mines for Manitoba, to make a similar survey of the mines of his Province. It indicated that, in Manitoba mines, chute accidents ranked second only to those from falls off roofs and sides. Why has the mining industry been so slow to recognize the dangers of chute pulling? A partial answer may be the lack of any systematic classification of accidents according to their real cause. The result has been to attribute to other causes injuries which were a direct outcome of chute pulling, and, indeed, has made it difficult to analyze accidents in the industry as a whole. Perhaps, too, because chutes are generally located in the comparative safety? of the drifts, there has been a tendency to consider the occupation as not very hazardous. Not until enough statistics were obtained on this particular task could it be appraised correctly. The Mining Association's survey has been most helpful, and latterly the industry has done a great deal toward analyzing the causes of chute accidents and toward determining an effective means of overcoming them. Much, however, remains to be done. An effort will be made in this paper to outline methods which have been found successful in materially reducing the number of injuries. Qualifications of the Chute Puller First of all it must be realized that chute-pulling is a specialized occupation. The men require proper training for the job, just as in other mining operations. Care must, therefore, be taken to choose persons whose qualifications fit them for the job. Chute-pulling is an integral part of the general mining operation and cannot be considered as isolated from the tasks of other workers. One of the essential qualifications of a chute-puller is a sufficient knowledge of mining operations to appreciate the effect his work will have on the safety of others in the vicinity. He must take the necessary precautions, by verbal warnings, by placing barricades and signs, or by personally guarding the chutes, to prevent accidents to fellow workers.

"There is a very small fraction of wireless experts in the world with experience in underground installations and an even smaller fraction that have experience specific to building mine shafts. This is why in 2009, Redpath created its own system to meet the demands specific to shaft construction. Today, after a dozen shaft installations and several design iterations, Redpath has the expertise and experience required to implement a proper wireless system in any shaft configuration.This document will explain multiple proven wireless communication designs optimized for shaft construction and suitable for permanent use. This includes line of sight installations up to 1200m, short range mesh networks, and the latest patent pending Integrated Leaky Feeder Mesh Network. Additionally, this document will explore the lessons that Redpath learned in its effort to interconnect the people and tools needed to build a mine shaft.INTRODUCTIONAfter a decade of research, several design iterations and a dozen application examples, Redpath has resolved two wireless network architectures to best serve mine shaft construction projects.The long range line-of-sight (LOS) wireless network is the most cost effective and easiest to install, but requires an unobstructed line of sight between the working area and the shaft collar. As such, long range LOS is best suited for ventilation shafts or during the first phase of shaft sinking, before the shaft is equipped.Alternatively, a mesh network uses radios installed at pre-determined intervals in the shaft and on each conveyance. A wireless mesh uses antennas to bridge intervals between shaft radios, whereas Redpath’s integrated leaky feeder mesh network (patent pending) bridges these intervals with radiating cable, commonly referred to as a “leaky feeder” cable. Both of these mesh configurations can provide continuous reception for hoist conveyances travelling in shafts without line-of-sight, making them ideal for shaft equipping and even permanent installations in both mine shafts and lateral drifts.BACKGROUNDHoist operators receive operating commands using what are commonly referred to as “bell signals.” These instructions are delivered in a series of coded pulses on a spring returned pull cord or push button that is typically hardwired back to the hoist operator’s control room from one of many locations in the mine shaft. During the construction phase of a traditional mine shaft, a worker riding inside the sinking bucket would have to reach out to a pull cord installed on the shaft wall to send a stop command to the hoist operator. Today, Redpath’s modern shaft sinking projects use fully enclosed personnel carriers to protect the workers riding inside, specifically preventing workers from reaching out into the shaft while the hoist is in motion. The enforcement of this safety feature on all shaft projects in 2008 forced the engineering group at Redpath to find a suitable wireless solution for hoist communication to facilitate shaft construction.THE IDEAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR MINE SHAFT CONSTRUCTIONIdeally, the shaft communication system should not transform the tools to which the miners have grown accustomed. It should support the push-to-talk functionality of traditional VHF handsets and the standard belling system that has been used for decades. Additionally, it should be able to support a vendor independent framework upon which new devices and features can be added. "Regardless of orebody value, at some stage, the pit will reach a depth where the reward for mining wider and/or deeper is not justified by the anticipated returns. ‘Last-blast’ strategies may help to some degree in recovering additional quantities of the resource but when a pit remains, there is often significant value left in the ground. In addition, in many cases, one or many good reasons may dictate why going underground and pursuing the orebody below the pit is also not justifiable. Whereas the company can hopefully move on to other more prospective parts of the orebody, the remaining options for the pit are usually very limited. Typically the pit is either held for potentially more favourable future pit expansion opportunities or it could be used for an alternative purpose, such as tailings or waste storage. This paper will present an alternative option that involves the direct extraction of values using in situ recovery (ISR) methods to recover additional value metals from the walls and/or floor of the pit. ISR involves circulating a fluid through the remaining orebody, solubilising the target metal and subsequently returning the solution to the surface for metal recovery. ISR is not the panacea to all but it has been employed selectively in the minerals industry for some time and the production of metals, such as uranium, rely heavily on this approach. ISR is not yet considered by many operators as an approach to compete with open pit or underground mining, largely because of the perceived limitations of this approach and the perceptions of risk. Rapid recent development of tools and enabling technologies relevant to ISR have made us reconsider the most economic approach to extracting many other metals from known mineral systems, even those currently listed as subeconomic. We suggest that ISR has the potential to make mine operators rethink the end of the pit life and adopt an innovative ISR approach to work toward a more complete recovery of value metals from existing pits.Citation:Kuhar, L L and Robinson, D J, 2016. The development of welded pipe has paralleled the general industrial development and, in particular, that of the petroleum industry. The petroleum industry's need for high-grade, economical pipeline material to make many 'of its projects feasible has been a significant factor in the development of light-wall, high-grade welded pipe. The modern welding processes, such as high-frequency, electric resistance, flash, submerged arc, etc., have some basically different characteristics. The modern high-frequency weld mill is a complex of specialized equipment that is integrated into a production unit. Each component in the unit performs a specific function in the production process. Quality control must be built into the process on an operating basis and, to maintain the quality required for pipeline standards, must be more than a policing operation. The further development of the welded pipe industry will be determined by changing and increasing demands. The technical and economic views and requirements that will influence the development have to be resolved.

Discussion of the paper of Mr. Granger, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 25, January, 1909, pp. 1 to 37. LEWIS M. HAUPT, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the 'Secretary*) :-This subject is of great interest to me, and I am noting progress and conditions as a test of my own judgment in advocating what I believed to be the nearer, cheaper and better route at Nicaraugua. I have as yet learned nothing to change my views, or modify the convictions which led me to retire from the Commission; but that is not the issue to-day. Our government is committed to the Panama route, and is bound to " make good." There are many points presented by Mr. Granger which seem to me worthy of very serious consideration. But when all is said there remains the risk of seismic convulsions, to which either form of canal is subject; and I fail to see that the risk would be reduced by making the cut deeper, with greater surcharge of lateral pressure upon the side walls. A severe earthquake in the rainy season would doubtless close either type of canal. One of the arguments in favor of the Panama route most insisted on, was that Nature had provided good natural harbors at its termini. Recalling this, it has interested me to note that the cost of creating the necessary harbors is estimated at $27,000,000. Mr. Granger refers to this, and quotes the Board's report to the effect that, on the Atlantic side, it will require 5 miles of jetties to " make an excellent harbor out of a wretched one." The vulnerable part of Mr. Granger's paper seems to me to lie in the admission that the plant required is still in the embryonic stage, and that at least one machine should be built and tested " to demonstrate that the theoretical strains and forces work out in practice exactly as expected." Loy Yang Power (LYP) owns and operates a 2160 MW brown coal fired, base load power station in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia (Loy Yang A). It also owns and operates a brown coal mine that supplies fuel to its own power station and a nearby 1000 MW power station owned by International Power (LoyYang B). The mine supplies 32 Mt of coal per annum from an open pit, which is currently about 4 km long by 2 km wide and 180 m deep. LYP has 500 employees and a substantial amount of work is also carried out by contractors and consultants. GHD Pty Ltd(GHD) has been contracted to provide mine planning and earth sciences expertise. GHD is an international professional services company that operates globally in many market sectors including mining, industry and the environment. The company has major offices in Melbourne and also within the Latrobe Valley. This paper sets out the experiences that GHD and LYP have gained in establishing a unique alliance arrangement for GHD to provide a range of mine planning, earth science, dam surveillance and environmental services to LYP. The underlying philosophy of the alliance is to closely align the objectives of the two companies such that GHDÆs recompense for service delivery is proportional to the benefit achieved by LYPÆs business. Quality of service, whole of life costs and risk management are important aspects and are reflected in key performance indicators against which GHDÆs performance is measured. Currently GHD provide 20 000 hours of labour to LYP per annum, which are delivered by up to 120 staff who possess the required diversity of skills. The paper explains how the contract was initially let as a conventional service agreement and explains why the contract was transformed into an alliance. It then illustrates the operation of the alliance with reference to the 2006 work program. The paper concludes with thoughts on how the arrangement can be further developed for the future to the benefit of both parties.

The strength of green and sintered pellets during reduction under various conditions in a laboratory kiln has been investigated. Equipment and test methods are described, together with the results obtained. The strength of sintered pellets drops sharply when the reduction starts, and goes through a minimum at the 70 per cent oxidation level. At more advanced reduction, the strength increases with increasing metallization. Successful use of green pellets as kiln feed requires that more attention be paid to the pellet preparation than is necessary when producing pellets for separate sintering. In particular, the ores have to be ground to a greater fineness. The initial strength of green pellets is low. Below the 70 per cent oxidation level, however, the strength of these pellets is about the same as the strength of sintered ones. Additions of such materials as silica, limestone and anthracite coal; within reasonable limits, affect the strength only slightly.

A quality assurance program consists of all those activities aimed at providing confidence to the purchaser that the suppliers quality system will provide a product that will satisfy the purchaser's stated quality requirement. An organizing principle is necessary for prioritizing the quality control activities of quality personnel in the face of a myriad of technical possibilities, data-analytic applications, and an overwhelming number of possible activities promoted in the literature and by quality "gurus". The organizing principle I like is that quality assurance exists when those involved in the quality process: (1) know what they are supposed to do, (2) can tell if they are doing it and are set up to continue doing it and, (3) if they are not, they can remedy the situation in a timely fashion. Any incremental activity which facilitates this organizing principle is a continuous improvement activity. That activity which has the chance to facilitate this principle to the greatest extent is the next one to work on. In these days of lean corporate and regional staffs it is as important to know what not to work on as it is to know what to work on. In this paper I shall discuss in general terms the implications of this organizing principle for the design of Quality Assurance (QA) Programs for coal mines and also provide some comments about the application of Statistical Process Control (SPC) methodologies in the coal industry.

As at any other mine in Canada, grade control procedures are used at Steep Rock Iron Mines (1) in order to ensure that concentrator and pellet-plant operator s have a uniform feed so that they can manufacture a pellet to suit buyers' specifications and (2) to maximize ore recovery so that as little as possible finds its way to the waste dump or is downgraded by contamination. At Steep Rock, material grading 40% to 66 % Fe is considered ore. The ore may contain up to 10% sulphur. These ranges create six different stock pile types, with the possibility of more if large concentrations of arsenic are encountered. Although grading and mining techniques used to accomplish these ends are fairly standard, there is an appreciation and willingness by hourly and staff pit personnel to make grade control effective. This produces vertical and horizontal communication, which is necessary for success in this field. At Steep Rock, the waste-to-ore ratio is greater than at any other iron ore mine in Canada. Also, a high percentage of the ore mined is direct pellet feed. For these reasons, .grade control is very important.
