This is the ninth annual tabulation of royalty information. Again this year, some of the older information has been deleted to make room for more than 30 new entries. Several articles and publications crossed the author's desk this past year that relate to mineral valuation and mineral royalty. Tom Loucks presented a paper, "The Valuation of Hard Rock Mineral Property," at the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation in Santa Fe, NM in July, 1990. His paper gives an indepth explanation of the definitions and concepts related to mineral valuation. It includes descriptions of numerous legal cases that have dealt with mineral valuation and proper reference is given for each case. Loucks works for the Denver Mining Finance Co. Gold royalties generally range from 5% to 7%, net smelter return. However, Severn Brown sent information that shows a much wider variation. Echo Bay Mines reported in its 1989 annual report royalties that range from 1.5 % to 30% for gold from various gold properties. Brown also sent a copy of an article that appeared in the Dec. 27, 1982, issue of Fortune magazine. This issue carried an article by Walter Guzzardi, Jr. "The Huge Find in Roy Ash's Backyard." The article gives the history of Newmont's leasing in Nevada on property that became the Carlin, Bootstrap and Blue Star Mines. The article states that the initial royalty was 10% that escalated to more than 16%. Another property, the site of Gold Quarry, provides an 18% royalty to the same own¬ers. The article makes interesting reading for those interested in mining history.

"A major thrust in industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements in control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.IntroductionEvery modem concentrator has a state-of-the-art computer control system in place. Several of these are contemplating installing, or have installed, advanced control systems, such as expert systems, but the foundation of their control system remains the PI controller. Although the authors are not aware of any survey or published information for the mineral processing industry, it is reasonable to assume that it would be similar to the pulp and paper industry. ""The average [pulp] mill has some 2000 control loops of which 97% use PI control. This means that PID, dead time compensation, adaptive controllers, specialized algorithms, ... , constitute only 3% of the installed base."" (Bialkowski [1992]).Bialkowski [1992] also stated that ""If you have been keeping score, only 20% of the loops surveyed actually decrease variability in automatic over manual mode of operation, in the short term."" He attributed the problems to: poor tuning (30% of all loops), control valve problems (30% of all loops) and process problems (20% of all loops). There appear to be a serious need to go back to basics and review the existing control system."

It discusses the practical aspects of mineral physics and outlines the theo¬retical viewpoint underlying the investigations reported herein.Explosive Shattering as a Possible Economical Method of Ore Presentation By John Gross and C. E. Wood. - It is shown that explosion shattering by impact is favored by large charges and by low ratio of water to charge. For 400-gram charges of dolomite crushed through 48 mesh the steam costs are less than 5 cents per ton of dolomite obtained. This is within the range of present steam costs for ball-milling dolomite.Electrical Properties of Minersl Aggergates I. Natural and Artificial Aggregates Crystallized Lead Sulphide By R.S. Dean and John Koster - This paper deals with the electrical properties of natural and synthetic galena. It is shown that massive crystalline galena has a normal positive temperature coefficient of resistance, whereas fine-grained steel galena has a negative temperature coefficient, the curve R v. T being exponential in form. That steel galena behaves somewhat like a leaky condenser is indicated by ballistic and alternating-current bridge measurements. In determining the cause of the erratic results of alternating-current resistance measurements it was observed that the measured re¬sistance was a function of the current through the specimen. The direct-current resistance was found to be proportional to the square of a superimposed radio-frequency current and independent of the frequency.The influence of grain size or the amount of metallic interface on the voltage-current characteristics at various temperatures on synthetic galena pastilles was studied. It is proved that the volts v. amperes curves are linear for all sizes and temperatures, that they have an intercept which is apparently a linear function of the temperature, and that their slopes are exponential functions of the temperature and give rise to a negative temperature coefficient of resistance.Apparatus for determing the Magnetic Constants of Mineral Powders by V,H, Gottschalk,and C. W. Davis.- A modified isthmus permeameter having a spark-suppressed primary and a multiplier in the secondary circuit to regulate the effect of capsules functioning as a twin isthmus is used to obtain quantitative data and normal induction and hystersis curves from small amounts of powdered material at fields surpassing 3.000 oersteds. Data and curves are given to demonstrate the calibration of the apparatus and the reproducibility of its results. Applications and limitations of the apparatus are noted.Magnetization Curves for Magnetite Poeders by V. H. Gottschalk and F. S. Wartman.- This paper gives measurements on four lots of purified and analyzed magnetites in mixed fractions with especial reference to the variation of permeability with grain size and with dilution by an inert material."

The resistance of very dense glacial outwash formations consisting of sand, gravel and cobble formations can be quite high, and techniques for measuring the strength and deformation properties often cause engineers to underestimate the strength of these layers in drilled shaft design. More realistic measurements of this dense formation can be achieved with slotted steel casing pressuremeter tests. To minimize disturbance and achieve accurate measurements, drilling a pilot hole prior to probe insertion is necessary. Characterizing geologic formations that contain significant amounts of gravel and cobbles is challenging because of scale factor. Inserting a standard pressuremeter probe into this formation without damaging the membrane is difficult. This paper presents a case study for the IR-75 project in Dayton, Ohio, USA, where these dense materials were characterized using a slotted casing pressuremeter, optimizing design by providing more realistic properties of these materials.

"A pilot plant study was conducted to evaluate the performance of column flotation in the recovery of gold from a gold/tellurides bearing sulphide ore, and to compare the performance of column flotation to conventional ""mechanically agitated"" flotation.Tests were conducted in a 60 liter glass column with ground flotation feed split from a concurrently operating conventional pilot plant, thus permitting direct comparison between the two processes. During the test program, the effects of wash water rate, gas holdup, froth depth, residence time and flow bias were examined in detail.The ore had an average ""as tested"" feed grade of about 5 g/t gold and 1 % sulphur, with the gold occurring primarily as inclusions of montbragite (Au2Te3) in pyrite, with minor amounts of native gold. Conventional flotation using 60 minutes residence time across four roughing stages recovered about 97% of the gold into concentrates grading about 50 g/t Au. A single stage of column flotation roughing using 25 minutes residence time matched the conventional circuit recovery of 97%, but produced grades of+ 150 g/t Au. INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation is the most significant innovation that has occurred in the mineral processing industry in recent years and has become an important alternative to mechanical flotation. Column flotation has been most widely accepted and applied in cleaning service where it has frequently proven to be superior to mechanically agitated flotation. Roughing in columns has not been ignored, but early testing indicated that columns may not be capable of achieving adequate recovery and, to date, columns have not been seen as serious competitors for mechanical roughers."

"American Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the goldstrike property in north eastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. This paper will overview the milling, autoclaving, and heap leaching facilities which are part of the $400-million Betze development plan. Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. And in 1992 Goldstrike will be the single largest North American gold mine when it produces 1,000,000 ounces.1. SUMMARYAmerican Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the Goldstrike property in northeastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. Conventionally low carbon ferromanganese is manufactured globally by refining high carbon ferromanganese in liquid state. This process is an expensive and lengthy technique. Hence, the present work was undertaken with the objective of understanding the feasibility and kinetics of the solid state refining of ferromanganese. The process involved transformation of carbon rich carbides viz. Mn3C2, Mn7C3 into metal rich carbide i.e. Mn15C4, Mn23C6 by subjecting the alloy powder to a flowing stream of carbon dioxide. Effect of the process governing parameters such as time, temperature, particle size, pressure on the extent of decarburization was studied. Without any loss of manganese in the form of fumes or slag, it was observed that, there was substantial reduction, viz. 65 per cent in the total carbon content, by this technique. Subsequently, the process was investigated to find out the mechanism of carbon removal. Depending upon the temperature and the particle size, it was found that the rate controlling mechanism changes from chemical reaction control to product layer (ash) diffusion control. The activation energy for each of the aforesaid mechanism was computed. The values thus obtained substantiated the aforesaid mechanisms.

The machine-mounted continuous respirable dust monitor (MMCRDM) is a fixed-location area sampling device developed for possible use at the working face of an underground coal mine. This device, based on proprietary technology known as the tapered element oscillating microbalance, has evolved over the past eight years through a cooperative effort of the former Bureau of Mines, MSHA, and the Rupprecht & Patashnick Company in Albany, NY. The capability to measure respirable coal mine dust levels on a continuous basis, rather than depending solely on periodic samples obtained from the traditional coal mine dust samplers, has been a goal in the mining industry for nearly two decades. Recently, an extensive series of laboratory and underground tests was conducted by NIOSH with the cooperation of MSHA and coal operators to test the performance of the MMCRDM In preliminary laboratory testing, the MMCRDM seemed to work well. However, in every underground test, when compared to reference samplers placed close to the inlet, the MMCRDM failed to meet the 25% accuracy criterion specified in the contract under which it was developed. Two reasons explain this failure: First, in most tests the bias (the relative discrepancy between the average MMCRDM concentration and the average reference sampler concentration) was too great. Second, the variability of the samplers used for reference comparison was too large. Finally, the underground testing of the MMCRDMs showed that they are quite unreliable at this stage of development. In the majority of mine tests, no more than 10 shifts of data were taken before the MMCRDM failed to function properly. Major breakdowns, requiring the return of the MMCRDM to the factory for repairs, occurred on average every 28 days. To be considered mine-worthy, MMCRDM reliability must be substantially improved. Over the past 100 years we have witnessed a revolution in permanent magnetic materials. Prior to 1932 electrical machinery depended upon steels for both the soft and the permanent magnet structures. Because permanent magnet steels were easily demagnetized, motors, generators, loudspeakers and similar devices often used the interaction between two electromagnets. Motors and generators were mostly of the induction type, depending for function upon induced fields. The discovery of Alnico in 1931 and its rapid commercialization presaged an expansion of the industrial revolution and today, permanent magnet structures are widely utilized. [ ] DEVELOPMENT OF PERMANENT MAGNETS Act 1: Early Days of Permanent Magnets Alnico, which stands for aluminum, nickel and cobalt, is a family of alloys with similar structure and processing requirements. Additional elements, such as copper and titanium, are present in minor amounts to optimize magnetic properties. Alnico is known by many trade names around the world including Alcomax, Hycomax, Ticonal, Nipermag, Koerzit, Oerstit, Nialco, etc(1,2,3). In addition to the generic name ?alnico?, it is usually appended with a number representing the magnetic grade.

The barite industry has made notable progress since the days when barite was used only as an adulterant in white-lead paints and the only method of mining it was with pick and shovel. The following chronological record may serve to show how this heavy white mineral has grown in importance in the national exonomy and at the same time to indicate development of methods for obtaining it. 1845. - Barite first, mined in Fauquier County, Va., for use as an adulterant in white-lead paints. 1850 (approx.). - French settlers 60 miles southwest of St Louis, Mo., discovered barite; called it "'tiff;' meaning white. It was mined and shipped to St. Louis for use in paint.

"1. INTRODUCTIONIn the past two decades, low-grade gold and silver ore bodies in the United States have been exploited by heap leaching, primarily with sodium cyanide solutions. This method has proven to be a viable alternative to conventional milling due to its low capital and operating costs. Successes have been made, particularly in Nevada, where ores are well oxidized and the climate is conducive to this method. in recent years, heap leaching has been tried in northern latitudes with some success, however, in using this method, operators face more severe limitations than do their neighbours to the south.This paper evaluates the limitations of heap leaching with particular emphasis on northern climates and introduces an alternative method to recover precious metal values in a continuous vat. This proprietory technology, known as the Mackie Vat Leaching Jig, shows promise, with improved gold recovery and potential to operate in cold climates.2. WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS TO HEAP LEACHING?Heap leaching of non-refractory ores is subject to the following limitations:1. Minimum amount of free gold and nuggets in the ore.?. Minerology of the ore--accessibility of gold to lixiviant.3. Minimum particle size and size distribution of crushed product to allow percolation of lixiviant through the heap.4. Minimum amount of clays or clay-like slimes that can cause coating of ore particles and channelling of lixiviant.5. Minimum strength of ore particles or agglomerations to allow economic height of heaps to be built.6. Amount and suitability of real estate.7. Amount and type of precipitation.8. Because of growing pressure from government and consumers to produce more coal, the mining industry must improve existing techniques and devise more efficient mining methods. Mining of the thicker, shallower and geologically superior coal seams in the western United States is being subjected to increasing pressure from environmentalists; and so in order to meet the demand, the coal industry is exhausting the more accessible surface seams and beginning to mine seam of over 1,000 feet in depth and less than. 30 inches in thickness. The longwall mining system is the natural choice for extracting deep and thin coal seams, as it operates almost independently of the overburden rock stress. Due to the added fact that longwall mining is an inherently more productive method than room and pillar mining, many coal producers are looking to it as a means of increasing productivity without a corresponding cost increase. The consistent rise in application of longwall mining in the United States in the last decade illustrates the excellent potential of this technique for the future. American mining conditions are geologically different from those in Europe where longwall mining has been highly developed and extremely successful. Although numerous successes have been recorded in the U.S. with this mining system, a substantial number of failures have also occurred. These failures are due primarily to roof control problems usually over the face, in the tail entry, or both. Another problem area for American operators contemplating the use of this method has been correct selection of equipment, which should be custom fitted to local mining conditions for optimum productivity. It is essential that correct estimates for chock resistances, support densities, supported and unsupported roof spans, as well as rates of advance and length of working faces be provided to optimize mining conditions. Unless extensive pilot projects are planned engineers must choose their equipment correctly at the outset. A typical investment in longwall equipment will amount to several millions of dollars.

Award of the Design/Build Agreement for construction of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) Niagara Tunnel Project was made after an intensive 8-month international procurement process. The 14.4-m diameter × 10.4-km long rock tunnel will divert 500 m3/s of water from the Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck hydroelectric generating complex. The procurement process and Design/Build Agreement included features to address the owner’s requirements regarding risk allocation and cost and schedule certainty, while encouraging innovative ideas from the industry, both technically and commercially. The process included an international expression of interest and prequalification, followed by an invitation for design/build proposals to qualified proponents, and comprehensive proposal evaluations and negotiations with several respondent proponents. An honorarium was provided to the unsuccessful participants in the proposal stage. The resultant negotiated Design/Build Agreement includes Owner’s Mandatory Requirements, negotiated contract terms and conditions, performanceincentive bonuses and liquidated damages for schedule and water delivery performance, a multistaged Geotechnical Baseline Report, joint risk management, references to preexisting community impact agreements and measures to reduce impact on tourism. It also addresses regulatory approvals and permits, an owner controlled insurance policy that required reference to the International Tunneling Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management as a condition of coverage, site specific safety, security and environmental plans, formal team building, a dispute review board, and escrow documentation.

In this study, reduction behaviours of Turkish chromite concentrate (48 % Cr2O3, 13.30 % FeO, 18.33 % MgO, 12.37 % Al2O3, 5.76 % SiO2) and nickel oxide by Fe-C alloy in graphite crucible were investigated. In the first stage of experiments, steel scraps were melted in graphite crucibles and were saturated with carbon at 1600 °C and 30 min. In the second stage, mixtures of different amount of chromite concentrate, nickel oxide and flux additives (CaO,SiO2 and CaF2) were charged into the graphite crucible containing the Fe-C alloy and heated to 1600 °C for different reduction times (0-180 min) under argon gas. The highest Cr and Ni con-tents in alloys were found as 11.41 and 14.37 % and the highest Cr and Ni recoveries were found as 88 and94 %, respectively at 180 min.

"1. Introduction Mattagami Lake Mines and Orchan Mines operate zinc copper mines adjacent to one another near Matagami, Quebec, situated approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Rouyn-Noranda. (Note: Mattagami Lake and Orchan are in the process of being absorbed by Noranda Mines and will become Noranda Mines-Matagami Division). Both concentrators began operations in late 1963.The Mattagami Lake concentrator is capable of treating up to 3,500 metric tons per day of massive sulphide ore with a mineral composition shown in TABLE 1. The Orchan concentrator consists of two separate circuits - the Orchan circuit with a capacity of 1,050 metric tons per day and a custom circuit with a capacity of 825 metric tons per day. Throughout its operation, Orchan has custom milled ore from several smaller deposits in the Matagami district."

Newmont Mining’s Ahafo Mine is located in Ghana approximately 300 km (190 miles) northwest of the capital city of Accra in the Brong-Ahafo region. The nearest city is Sunyani, located 45 km (28 miles) to the north. The Ahafo Mine will process ore from seven major pits that extend along a 40-km (25-mile) strike. Four pits are in the south and three pits are in the north. The resource is currently stated at 373 t (12 million oz). But it still has the potential for growth both from new discoveries and the development of underground operations.

Barrick Gold recently implemented an oxygen roasting process to treat carbonaceous ore from its Goldstrike property in Nevada. One of the key project challenges was the design of the roaster gas cleaning system, which was driven by the requirements of a strict air permit and the need to achieve very high reliability. The roaster gas systems include multiple stages of wet particulate collection, a dual alkali SO2 scrubber, mercury scrubbing, CO oxidation and NOx reduction. This paper describes the gas system, the influence of regulations on project implementation, and performance of the system.

Models of the size specific processes of particle collision, attachment and detachment have been combined in a form suitable for analysis of a full-scale flotation plant. The model is based on a first principal approach to particle collection by bubbles. Parameters considered include particle size, bubble size, particle contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment and froth recovery. Using data structures configured within an Excel spreadsheet using æLimn: The Flowsheet ProcessorÆ, the model has been incorporated into a description of the individual cells within a simple roughing and cleaning flotation circuit. Simulated feeds of varying particle size distribution, feed tonnage and varying mineral hydrophobicity representing different mineral phases are presented to the model to produce predicted final concentrate grades and recoveries. Practical techniques for measuring many of the parameters included in the model are now becoming readily available. However, relating the terms included for contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment (ie water recovery) and froth recovery to measurable parameters in operating plants remain as continuing challenges for research.

Asimismo, se determina una asociación del S2Mo como un pulso tardío de mineralización sin cobre en la zona de alteración argílica de los diques monzoníticos y en el endoskarn.
