IT IS the purpose of this paper to summarize, as far as possible, the metallurgical information and experience gained by the Ordnance Department, during the War, in the manufacture of artillery cartridge cases, to describe the tests to which artillery cartridge cases were put, and to summarize the knowledge and experience gained in this testing. The authors wish to acknowledge the aid given by manufacturers, army officers, and civilian employees of the Ordnance Department in obtaining these data. Artillery cartridge cases are cold drawn from circular disks punched from strips of rolled brass. The manufacture involves from 25 to 30 main operations, which are done almost entirely on a punch press. Descriptions of the operations have appeared in various periodicals and, therefore, will not be given here. After each cupping, or drawing, operation, except the last, the cases are annealed at from 540° to 650° C. (1000° to 1200°F.), to remove all the hardening stresses set up in the metal and to allow complete recrystallization. After each annealing, the cases are pickled in niter cake or sulfuric-acid solution and then washed in water to remove all traces of acid. In some instances, the cases are then immersed in a cyanide-salt solution, and afterwards rinsed in water, to remove the thin layer of copper that forms on the surface of the cases during the acid pickle. The last cold-drawing operation is followed, by the heading operation which, by flattening the head of the case on the outside, causes the metal to flow on the inside to approximately the proper finished dimensions. The mouth, or open end, is then annealed at 430° to 480° C. (800° to 900° F.) by immersion in a salt bath or by gas flames. After being washed, the cases are tapered, when they are ready for machining, inspection, and testing.

Falls of roof account for over 50% of the fatalities that occur in coal mines in the US. Thus, roof control is one of the more important phases of underground mining. In reality, the control of roof influences the system of mining and is a major determinant of the width and spacing of working places, operations at the mining face, ventilation control, and surface subsidence. Frequently, the control of roof is the largest single cost item. Roof control is a never-ending task, not only at the working face and throughout sections where men are working, but along haulways and air- ways that must be maintained for the life of the mine. This is because roof, even the best of roof, slowly deteriorates, so it must be frequently examined, with corrective support applied when needed. As coal is excavated, stresses are set up in the roof because the previous equilibrium is upset, resulting in pressures that cause fractures and slight movements that are frequently hard to detect. Unless the immediate roof, in the excavated area, is given support by artificial means, it might fall or there might be a succession of falls, varying from a thin scale to several feet, depending on the nature of the top. Exceptions to this are those rare mines, or sections of mines, with hard, strong, nonweathering roof that requires no support. GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF ROOF There are two broad types of roof as far as support is concerned: the immediate roof above the coal and the main roof. Artificial support for mining purposes is only concerned with the immediate roof as nothing except large blocks of solid coal, or massive concrete, will support the main roof. The immediate roof is generally a few feet thick but can vary from inches to 6.1 m (20 ft) or more. The corrosion resistance of die-cast and freely-solidified and electromagnetically-stirred thixocast AZ91D alloy has been studied using electrochemical noise technique in a 0.05M NaCI solution at pH 6.1 and 25°C. Specimens polished at different depths were immersed for a period of 75 min in order to assess the influence of the microstructure on corrosion kinetics and morphology. At depths between 10 and 50 µm (skin), all specimens showed general non-uniform corrosion with the lowest corrosion resistance. Between 100 and 200 µmn (interior skin), the observed corrosion was accompanied by superficial undefined pits due to metastable pitting. The corrosion form for 100-200 µm gave the best corrosion resistance. Stable pitting corrosion was observed beyond 400 µm deep on the bulk specimens. The skin of all thixocast specimens prepared billets showed a more corroded surface than that of die-cast. The interior skin as well as the bulk specimens showed better performance than that of the die-cast specimens.

Mine wide, underground wireless communications are possible with the use of Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) technology. Due to the propagation through rock of ULF radio signals a relatively small antenna can provide communications coverage over a complete mining operation. Starting as a Personal Emergency Device (PED) for emergency messaging to miners under all circumstances, the ULF communications system has grown to include capabilities of remote control of underground equipment such as pumps and fans and centralised blasting initiation. This technology is now in use on 5 continents having lately made it onto the African mining scene. The paper and presentation will provide the audience with the benefit from international mining know-how in this technology as well as local African experiences. A recent commissioning exercise for example, is expected to pay for itself in electricity savings within a few months. These and other results from practical demonstrations and usage will be covered. This novel technology becomes an integral part of the daily operating infrastructure of a mine with immediate safety and business benefits. It is able to reduce capital expenditure and is designed for ease of routine operational use. The paper will conclude with insights into current R&D for further development of this technology.

The Marine Mining Technology Center (MMTC) was authorized by an act of the United States Congress in 1996. The act established several marine minerals research centers in the U.S., including one at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska MMTC is funded through the Minerals Management Service of the Department of the Interior and concentrates its research in the Artic seas region. Recent research projects at the MMTC include, among others, a geographic information system (GIS) application to the gold placer deposits offshore Nome, Alaska, a marine gold placer reserve definition model using a neural network, and development of an expert system model for submarine tailings disposal (STD) planning and decision-making. Although geostatistics remains the most prevalent method used today for ore grade estimation, researchers have made numerous improvements over the years for accurately predicting grades of ore using various other estimation techniques. As a result, the neural network has recently emerged as an alternative to geostatistics for grade estimation purposes. A neural network is a non-linear, model-free estimator that is well-suited for noisy and/or sparse data environments. Neural networks perform best with non-linear spatial data, contrary to the stationary assumption of ordinary Kriging techniques. In the marine placer ore reserve definition model, the neural network technique was used to estimate placer gold reserves offshore Nome. This study demonstrated the utility of neural network modeling over other traditional ore reserve estimation methods, especially for high cut-off grades. Some of the relevant issues of neural network modeling were also addressed in the study. In testing, the neural network produced results that were close to those from geostatistical techniques including Kriging, polygon, and inverse distance methods.

NASA has received direction for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to then, it will be necessary to learn about how lunar soil can be used to promote civilization on the moon. Questions must be answered: ?Will it support plant life?,? ?Can it be used as a construction material?,? ?What is needed to maximize health and safety?,? and ?Will it affect equipment, tools, machinery, and clothes?? The only samples available for study came from the Apollo Missions. Because the expense of bringing more material back to Earth is prohibitive, there is not enough available to perform studies to answer the above questions. Hence, there is a great need for its synthesis. Most efforts to date have concentrated on making ?simulant? from single natural resources of volcanic rock. However, another possibility is to use resources here on Earth to extract the minerals of interest into concentrates or so-called ?separates? using traditional mineral processing techniques, and then mix the separates in appropriate ratios to simulate the lunar soil. In this paper, results from a study in which dry Road Norite outcrop and wet mill tailings from the Stillwater Mining Company?s Concentrator located near Nye, MT were examined. Of course, the in-side challenge is to make ?separates? from gangue minerals.

"The SUSOP« Framework is a new technique that helps incorporate sustainable development principles and objectives into the design and operation of businesses. Developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, it brings a design methodology to sustainability, similar to what hazard and risk techniques such as HAZOP did for safety.Metallica Minerals Limited (æMetallicaÆ) adopted the SUSOP« framework to help identify opportunities and risks that could directly improve or affect its flagship SCONI (nickel-cobalt and scandium) project. This project has the potential to become the worldÆs largest producer of scandium oxide (æscandiaÆ) which is used in solid oxide fuel cells and strengthens aluminium alloys. Located northwest of Townsville in Queensland, the plant site will be located within the previously mined and partially rehabilitated Greenvale Nickel Mine. By applying the SUSOP« framework through a series of multi-disciplinary workshops and offline analysis, Metallica was able to identify numerous sustainability opportunities and risks. Opportunities were clustered together to form concepts to develop a more holistic understanding of the projectÆs overall potential contribution to sustainable development as well as determine where key risks could be mitigated. Four key concepts were identified: Waste and Water Workforce Community and Enterprise Development Energy and Greenhouse Gases (GHG). Metallica was able to include a range of initiatives that could deliver enhanced environmental, social and community outcomes into their mine development plan. These included measures to reduce reliance on water, reduce the volume of waste, provide local opportunities for training and skilled employment and create support for local enterprise development. These measures also resulted in a significant reduction in the capital estimate of the project.This paper provides an overview of the SUSOP« framework, details its application to the SCONI project and discusses the outcomes that will help establish the projectÆs strong sustainable development credentials and improved business outcomes.CITATION:Corder, G, Currey, N and Becker, G, 2013. Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬-based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X¬ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

IN order to clarify and amplify the existing data concerning the action of the cementing material in cemented tungsten carbide alloys, the authors have initiated this investigation of the entire range of cobalt-tungsten carbide alloys. Inasmuch as the ultimate objective is relative to what actually goes on during the sintering of cemented tungsten carbide materials, this work was necessarily restricted to heat treatments similar to those used in actual production of these materials. In the course of numerous experiments, the authors have noted several conditions that indicated that there was a solubility to be considered. Among these factors are the following: 1. Many of the alloys showed a much larger amount of binding constituent to be present than could possibly be accounted for by the cobalt content. 2. In many areas, grains of the carbide constituent are much larger than the particles of carbide originally added. In addition, these grains are of very regular contour. 2a. In samples of cemented tungsten carbide which had been fused in the atomic hydrogen torch in the presence of excess hinder constituent, immense grains are formed, and their shapes are very regular. This is also true when the cemented tungsten carbide of 13 per cent. Co content is fused alone in the atomic hydrogen torch. Contrary to general expectation, chemical analysis of this material, after fusion in the atomic hydrogen torch, checks the analysis of unfused material. 3. In making the cemented tungsten carbide materials by the process of exerting the pressure at the time of heating a certain portion of the contents squeezed out of the mold. Chemical analysis has shown that this material contains approximately 12 to 20 per cent. of tungsten. The microstructure shows a cored dendritic structure interlaced with eutectic network, and some graphite, as shown in Fig. 1. 4. Thermal analysis of these materials has consistently indicated an arrest point close to 1350° C.

Industrially proven and applied nitrogen species catalyzed (i.e. NSC) acidic pressure leaching has been utilized to treat a number of ores, concentrates and recycled materials. This versatile technology offers many advantages including low temperatures, low pressures, low capital costs, low operating costs, faster throughput and less costly materials of construction than conventional pressure oxidation. This paper will elucidate the application of this technology for production of gold, silver, palladium, rhodium, zinc, germanium, gallium, cobalt, copper and nickel. Recycled material applications will also be elucidated. In addition, details of an application for treatment of a refractory chalcopyrite copper and gold bearing ore will be presented and pertinent economics discussed.

Empirical relationships between fracture stress, orientation angle, and diameter of crystal have been determined at 77°K. Orientation ranges of markedly different behavior were found—a law of constant normal stress&apos; of value a (diameter)-1/2 for the fracture of ductile crystals, and a condition of shear stress (or strain) for more brittle crystals. The observations are not consistent with current theories. An interpretation is advanced which is also applicable to observations on the effect of prestrain at room temperature on the subsequent fracture stress at 77°K and to the effect of cyclic stressing on the cleavage strength.&apos;&apos; The law of constunt normal stress&apos; and the brittle ductile transition are also explained. The interpretation is more consistent with the initiation of cracks by intersecting dislocations than with theories based on stress -concentration by dislocation arrays. ZINC single crystals are particularly suited to the study of cleavage because fracture occurs on the basal plane over a wide range of crystal orientations. Analysis of the conditions of stress and strain at fracture in crystals of different orientations should indicate which parameters control the cleavage process. Unfortunately, controversy has arisen over the correct empirical relationship between tensile fracture stress and orientation. Schmid&apos;s observations1,2 favored a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos;, as observed in other materials.2 For zinc, however, the observed values are far below the theoretical strength and cannot represent the true limit of cohesion between neighboring atomic planes. Hence, the interpretation of such a &apos;law&apos; is not straightforward. Deruyttere and Greenough3,4 found a complex variation between tensile fracture stress and orientation; this variation did not agree with a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos;. Two theories have been advanced to account for their observations: a) the propagation of cracks from low-angle boundaries,5 and b) the release of energy from piled-up dislocations during crack-propagation.4 The present work resolves the apparent discrepancy between the observations and shows that neither of the above theories are applicable to the tensile fracture of zinc single crystals. A phenomenological explanation, along the lines suggested by Gilman,&apos; is advanced and successfully applied to previously unexplained effects. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS &apos;Crown Special&apos; redistilled zinc was used, except for one comparison series op tests using &apos;Tadanac&apos; electrolytic zinc. Crystals of 1 mm diam, subsequently called &apos;1 mm crystals&apos;, were grown from the melt in vacuo in precision-bore Pyrex tubes internally coated with graphite. Several specimens 1 in. long were cut from each crystal and chemically polished. Jigs were used to minimize handling strains, and crystals were mounted in the Polanyi machine the day prior to testing to allow recovery from any such strains. One-mm crystals were chemically polished for long periods to obtain 0.1 mm (approx) crystals. One-mm crystals were cemented into miniature gimbals by &apos;Araldite&apos; casting resin. The Appendix gives the reasons for using gimbals and the results obtained by other methods. More complete details of all techniques are given elsewhere.7 The symbols and terminology used are as follows: X = orientation angle (angle between tensile axis and line of greatest slope in the basal plane). T = tensile stress (on true cross-section) S,N = shear and normal stress (components of T with respect to the basal plane) ? = shear strain D = crystal diameter. The subscript &apos;f&apos; will be used to denote values at fracture. PART I-ANNEALED CRYSTALS EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS One-mm crystals were used to establish the variation of fracture stress at 77°K with orientation at fracture (Xf), Fig. 1. For 18 deg = Xf = 55 deg, a &apos;law of constant normal stress&apos; was observed. For Xf > 55 deg, the fracture condition approximated to a constant shear stress. At Xf< 18 deg, twinning occurred before fracture so that the results were not typical of homogeneous single crystals,4,8— such specimens will not be considered herein. "In refractory ores, a substantial part of the gold content may be present as a sub-microscopic component within the mineral matrix of the various carriers. This type of gold may be present as finely disseminated colloidal size gold particles (<0.5µm) or as a solid solution within the sulphide mineral matrix. Such ores are not amenable to gold recovery by direct cyanidation. In order to liberate the sub-microscopic gold, the ore has to be oxidized before being subjected to gold cyanidation and extraction. Autoclave pressure oxidation (AC POX) of the sulphide ore and subsequent cyanidation is a common technology used to liberate the gold in such refractory ores. The additional presence of active carbonaceous matter in such ores (double refractory ores) represents another major obstacle for efficient gold recovery during the process of pressure oxidation and cyanidation. This carbonaceous matter (c-matter) can adversely affect the gold recovery due to its ability to adsorb, or pre-grob gold from the cyanide solution. Advanced micro-beam analytical techniques such as Dynamic Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (D-SIMS) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) have become powerful tools for characterization of different forms and carriers of gold for the needs of the mineral processing industry. Major advantages of these techniques are related to their ability to analyze individual mineral particles and provide quantitative analysis with detection limits in the low ppm/ppb concentration range. This paper describes various micro-beam techniques and procedures implemented at Surface Science Western (SSW) for quantification and characterization of the sub-microscopic gold and the preg-robbed surface gold as part of full gold deportment studies in feeds and process stream products."

Aluminum alloys offer a wide range of capability with a unique combination of advantages that makes them the materials of choice for numerous products and markets. One of the most important applications is their use as the primary structure and outer envelope in aerospace vehicles. Wide and thorough studies on hot working and microstructure evolution of aluminum alloys have been made in Russia. The most important appear to be: - introducing the structure diagrams in strain rate - temperature coordinates which show areas of different microstructures (non-recrystallized, recrystallized, and mixed) after the hot deformation and the following heat-treatment for common aluminum alloys (Yu.M. Vainblat); - studying the press-effect ("structural effect" by V.I. Dobatkin); - learning the influence of hot worked substructure on aging mechanisms; conducting researches on press heat-treatment. These works allowed a deeper understanding and a better control of the mechanical behavior of aluminum products. Comparisons are made to equivalent developments in Europe and America.

INTRODUCTION Jack Spalding in Deep Mining, Chapter 3, states: "In deep mining, to start stoping an orebody without a definite plan of operations covering the whole extraction from beginning to end is to invite serious trouble. Any stoping without plan is bound to leave, toward the end, a number of pillars, remnants, or promontories, which, as they are reduced in size, are liable to fail and cause a general collapse. The object of stope planning is so to mine an orebody that at no stage in the operation is a remnant left. Definition: `When a block of ore is stoped in such a way that eventually a small piece is left entirely surrounded by stoping, that piece is termed an island remnant.&apos; The design of and adherence to a plan of stoping is of greater importance in preventing rock bursts than the type of ground control adopted." This, of course, is just an example of the old axiom that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And in this context, mining does not have to be very deep before poor ground conditions, made worse by lack of good planning, force a mining company to resort to more expensive methods of ore recovery. At all times when rock pressures become excessive, stoping plans must be devised to avoid the creation of pillars or promontories. This is most readily recognized when mining deep narrow ore veins by open methods. It would be a little more general to say that stoping systems should seek to avoid or minimize localized concentrations of rock stress. Ore bodies, and particularly those at Falcon¬bridge, can reach large widths and leaving pillars for extraction at a later time cannot be avoided. However, good planning can reduce the effect of factors which create bad ground conditions. The necessary ingredients of planning are time and information: time to formulate and revise ideas; information, gained in exploration and early development, to provide the fullest knowledge of the ore body. In this way, plans become meaningful. It must always be kept in mind that the long-term results of good planning often require decisions not compatible with reaching earliest full production. PLANNING FOR DEEP MINING At Falconbridge Nickel Mines ore bodies presently being found and prepared for production lie at depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft) below surface. Current un¬derground exploration is being directed towards favor¬able locations below 914.4 and 1219.2-m (3000 and 4000-ft) depths, at most mines. The Onaping Deep ore body has been traced to a depth of 1508.8 m (4950 ft) and at Falconbridge mine the ore body is under develop¬ment below the 5000 level. Planning for more efficient ground control has therefore become an important con¬sideration of future mining. HYDRAULIC BACK FILLING AND CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The advent of hydraulic back filling has led to the increasing use of flat-back cut-and-fill stoping methods during the last ten years, until it has probably become the commonest method of mining deep ore deposits in Canada. These methods account for almost all the pro¬duction from Falconbridge Mines at this time. The ad¬vantages claimed are: safety-a minimum of open ground; very little supplementary ground support (except rockbolted backs and walls); greater selectivity and flexibility in extraction (horizontal extension of the vein, high grade ore stringers going out into the walls); and high productivity and increased mechanization in larger ore widths. There is some difference of opinion as to whether hydraulic classified tailing back fill provides any great resistance to initial closure of the stope walls. The evi¬dence available suggests that it does not. Addition of portland cement to the back fill just prior to placement has produced a material having the properties of a weak concrete. It is confidently expected that this material will assist greatly in the efficient mining of pillars and generally in giving increased ground support to oppose closure. PRINCIPLES OF STOPE PLANNING BY LONGITUDINAL FLAT-BACK CUT-AND-FILL Again quoting from Spalding: "The practice of con¬trolling output by stopping and starting stopes is bad¬stopes once started should proceed without interruption, and control must therefore be obtained by altering the rate of stoping. It is therefore necessary that faces should normally advance at a medium rate which can be boosted, if required, to give temporarily a greater output. Modern high productivity stoping methods, however, generally aim to achieve and maintain the maximum output possible from a stope. Control of tonnage and grade, therefore, becomes a more complex problem requiring very careful scheduling and organiza¬tion. With the basic method of flat-back overhand stoping using hydraulic fill, it is not usually possible to mine in such a way as to avoid creating pillars." Consider an ore body as illustrated in Fig. 1. It is 274.3 m (900 ft) high by 228.6 m (750 ft) long on strike and averages 4.6 m (15 ft) in ore width. It rep¬resents approximately 907 000 t (1,000,000 st). The ore body could be mined by advancing one long single face through all the levels from bottom to top. A total face length of 228.6 m (750 ft) would accommo¬date five 45.7-m (150-ft) stopes. See Fig. la. Each of these stopes would produce approximately 1814 t/m (2000 stpm) and the ore body would require a period of ten years for complete extraction. A possible im¬provement to this scheme might be to stagger the indi¬vidual stope faces. See Fig. 1b. Problems of hanging wall failure can be reduced by this arrangement. From the point of view of reducing travelway maintenance, it is good practice to employ a stoping system of retreat. Sustainability of plant operations in a rapidly changing mining environment requires a well-trained workforce to ensure smooth running of operations. To ensure availability of trained labor, Mopani Copper Mines PLC set up a training facility in 2013. The school offers training in Engineering, Mining and Process. The engineering section enrolls grade 12 school leavers for artisan training. Mining section offers comprehensive safety induction program to employees and contractors to meet the Mopani zero tolerance accidents safety policy. The process training section offers advanced training programs for plant operating personnel and university graduates. The program includes needs analysis, theoretical metallurgical modules, practical plant training and e-learning modules. The school also offers assaying and sampling courses. All the above courses are extended to individuals and other mining houses outside Mopani wishing to have their personnel trained. The Mopani sustainable development academy ensures that contractors engaged on the Mopani sites are fully registered, comply with all relevant regulations and have undergone induction program before they can be allowed to work on the mine. INTRODUCTION “Sustainable operation of the mining industry requires a continuous supply of trained human resources” (Kapobe et al., 2018). The publication by the Asian Development Bank (2014) argued that there was a mismatch between the demand for high-level skills and the oversupply of low-level skills. Globally, the mining industry requires continued supply of skilled manpower for its complex operations and long term projects whose sustainability is absolutely necessary. Implementation of newer technologies in plant operations to ensure cost effective and efficient operations requires trained and skilled labor at various levels to handle ever-changing challenges. Dutz (2007:152–156) made three recommendations for Building Worker and Management Skills in India: Strengthen enterprise - based training. The government should help ensure that the benefits of in- service training are widely recognized by enterprises, while simultaneously providing strong financial incentives Improve vocational training - Vocational education and training systems have been unsuccessful in preparing graduates to meet market needs, particularly because of a lack of interaction with industry. Public and private vocational education and training providers should be strengthened to make them more responsive to industry demands. Curricula should be updated to reflect modern technologies. Strengthen business, management education, management of research and commercialization - business and management education should be strengthened through public-private partnerships. Innovative management courses should be introduced. Although these recommendations were made for India, they also apply to Zambia and other low and medium income nations.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

When unwatered after more than 50 years of operation, the White Rock Tunnel of the Upper American River Project in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains exhibited failing rockbolts and ground falls. Repairs designed for the 5 mile-long, 24-foot horseshoe unlined hydropower tunnel included pattern rock bolts, shotcrete, and cleanout of the rock trap. The work, originally scheduled for two 3-month winter outages, was completed under challenging conditions in a single 4-month outage following a carefully sequenced work plan using robotic shotcrete and rockbolter machines. Flexibility, creative solutions, and collaboration by all parties were key to project success.

The liquidus curve of the Mg-Pb system was accurately redetermined. The compound Mg2Pb decomposes peritectically at 538.2° ± 0.3°C to liquid and to a compound p&apos; which melts congruently at 35.0 at. pct Pb and 549.0° ± 0.3°C. The solidus curve of ß&apos; was determined. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that 4&apos; has an orthorhombic structure. Activity values of magnesium calculated from the phase diagram agree with those published in the literature. EXPERIMENTAL thermodynamic properties of binary metallic systems have to be consistent with values calculated from the phase diagram. In systems forming intermetallic compounds the shape of the liquidus curve near a compound is determined by the thermodynamic properties of the coexisting solid and liquid phases. Hauffe and Wagner&apos; neglected the temperature dependence of the chemical potentials and obtained the potential differences of the components of the liquid alloys, relative to stoichiometric liquid. Their calculations were based on the liquidus curve and on the heat of fusion of the compound, and were only valid near the congruent melting point. Steiner, Miller, and Komarek2 developed equations which account for the temperature dependence and obtained the chemical potentials of liquid Mg-Sn alloys over the entire phase diagram from the liquidus and solidus curves and from enthalpy values with the pure components as the standard states. The Mg-Pb phase diagram has been studied by several investigators whose results have been compiled and critically evaluated by Hansen.3 Although the liquidus curve was poorly defined, the general features of the diagram, i.e., one congruent melting compound, Mg2Pb, of essentially stoichiometric composition, two eutectics, and limited terminal solid solubilities, seemed to be suitable for a similar thermodynamic analysis. A careful redeter-mination of the liquidus by thermal analysis revealed, however, the existence of another compound. The liquidus curve between the two eutectics was precisely delineated and the structure and solidus curve of the new compound were investigated. The revised phase diagram was thermodynamic ally analyzed to evaluate the activity of magnesium in the liquid alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The magnesium metal (Dominion Magnesium Ltd., Toronto, Canada) had a purity of 99.99+ pct; lead (American Smelting and Refining Co.) contained 99.999 pct Pb. Most experiments were carried out in graphite crucibles. Several experiments were made in high-purity alumina (Triangle R.R., Mor-ganite, Inc.) and in Armco iron crucibles to test the inertness of the graphite crucibles. Chemical analysis of magnesium and detailed description of the procedure for thermal analysis have been given previously. For the determination of the solidus curve of the compounds, specimens of initial composition Mg2Pb were equilibrated in a closed isothermal system with magnesium vapor. The source of the magnesium vapor was an alloy which had a gross composition lying in the 0&apos; + L field at the temperature of equilibration. As equilibrium was approached, the specimens lost magnesium to the two-phase reservoir thereby lowering the activity of magnesium in the specimens until activity and composition equaled that of the ß&apos;/ß&apos; + L boundary. Crucibles (1.9 cm ID by 2.2 cm OD by 4.1 cm high) and tightly fitting lids were machined from a molybdenum rod; small, shallow trays were fashioned from thin (0.005 in.) molybdenum sheet, and all the molybdenum components were degreased in hot carbon tetrachloride and then dried. The pieces were then degassed in vacuum at 950°C for about 6 hr. The two-phase alloy was placed at the bottom of the crucible and small specimens of the Mg2Pb compound, weighed on an analytical balance, were placed in two molybdenum trays above the two-phase alloy. The crucible was closed by forcing its lid on and then inserted in a titanium crucible. This crucible was evacuated, flushed twice with argon, and welded under argon. The specimens were equilibrated for about 1 week in a resistance furnace regulated by a Celectray controller, and the runs were terminated by water quenching. The specimens were again weighed and the equilibrium compositions were calculated on the basis that the weight losses were solely due to a loss of magnesium to the two-phase alloy. The structure of the B&apos; phase was investigated by the Debye-Scherrer X-ray diffraction technique. The Wachovia Headquarters and Arts and Cultural Campus project in Charlotte, NC includes a 1.5 million square foot, 48-story office tower, two museums, an Afro-American cultural center and a 1,200 seat theater for the performing arts. Public access to the Cultural Campus is through two pedestrian tunnels constructed under city streets connecting to parking garages. The 5.7 m wide by 4.7 m high mined tunnels were procured through a design-build contract. The tunnels were designed as initial/final shotcrete linings with a sprayed water barrier sandwiched between layers of shotcrete. In addition, the mix design was supplemented with a cementitious admixture to develop internal water resistant properties in the shotcrete.

Galvanic corrosion is a potentially major concern associated with the application of stainless steel reinforcement which is in direct (electrical) contact with carbon steel reinforcement in concrete structures. Judicious use of stainless steel rebar in both new construction and rehabilitation of older structures is a viable, cost-effective option for extending service life and reducing maintenance costs. Questions, however, had arisen about the possibility of increased corrosion due to galvanic effects. This paper investigates the galvanic-coupling behaviours of three different types of stainless steel and carbon steel. Tests were performed both in electrochemical cells and with specimens in concrete inside an environmental chamber. The results show that oxygen reduction on stainless steel is the rate-determining factor for galvanic coupling of these two metals. It is much lower than that of passive carbon steel. As a result, the galvanic coupling of stainless steel with carbon steel will not increase the risk of corrosion of carbon steel reinforcement.
