Actualmente, la tecnología está alcanzando a la ciencia ficción y nos presenta equipos de transporte autónomos o robots que realizan levantamientos topográficos. Sin embargo, existen nuevos retos que esta nueva tecnología debe afrontar como la disminución de impacto ambiental. En particular este trabajo técnico tratara los esfuerzos y dificultades que enfrentan la minería subterránea en descarbonización y gestión de residuos desde un enfoque de estudios de factibilidad o prefactibilidad y algunos ejemplos en operaciones.

Copper powder generated during the treatment of electro-metallurgical bleeds by reactive electro- dialysis (RED) had totally reduced the content of ferric ions in acidic synthetic electrolytes (Cu (II)- Fe (III) – H2SO4). In batch and columnar experiments 100% of the ferric ions were reduced to ferrous ions with an extremely high kinetics. A preliminary conceptual design for reducing ferric ions based on an integrate RED- Column for treatment of electro-winning bleed system is discussed. This system is able to recover simultaneously sulfuric acid and copper powder, which will reduce ferric ions. INTRODUCTION It is well known the negative effect of ferric ions in the copper electro-winning process. The increase of ferric content in the electrolyte reduces the current efficiency, i.e., there is an increase in the energy consumption, and changes the surface morphology of the copper deposit (Das, Gopala & Krishna, 1996; Vargas & Parra, 2013). The increase of the specific energy consumption due to the loss of current efficiency occurs by the reduction reaction of ferric to ferrous ions in the cathode, at the anode the ferrous ions are slowly oxidized to ferric ions (Shaw, Dreisinger, Lancaster, Richmond & Tomlinson, 2004). To control the level of iron in the electrolyte, bleeds are needed; this bleed electrolyte containing copper, sulfuric acid, cobalt, iron and other impurities normally is waster, which increased the production cost of the plant (Milbourne, 2002; Mckevitt & Dreisinger, 2009). Then, permanent efforts oriented to treat those bleeds to avoid losses of valuables components are made; among them are use ion exchange resins (Shaw et al., 2004; Mackevitt et al., 2009), chemical precipitation (Izadi, Mohebbi, Amiri & Izadi, 2017) and electrodialysis (Cortés, Ipinza & Ibáñez, 2013). The last one allows to the simultaneous recovery of sulfuric acid and copper powder. If one of the valuables obtained by treating the bleed can be used to reduce ferric ion concentration in the electrolyte could be an important asset. This issue at laboratory scale is reported in this work, the use of copper powder, generated by reactive electro-dialysis when treating synthetic acidic electro-metallurgical bleeds, for reducing ferric ions in acidic electrolytes.

The effect of alloying elements on the mechanical properties and weldability of wrought gamma prime strengthened nickel- base superalloys is well known. An understanding of the basic guidelines concerning alloying additions has led to the invention and development of HAYNES® 282® alloy for applications in aircraft and land base gas turbines and other high-performance high-temperature environments. The alloy combines exceptional high temperature properties with good weldability and fabricability. At high temperatures (~ 900 °C), the alloy is stronger in creep strength than Waspaloy alloy (UNS N07001) and it approaches the creep strength of R-41 alloy (UNS N07041). Because the alloy has better thermal stability, fabricability, and weldability than Waspaloy and R-41 alloys, it is currently being considered as a candidate universal consumable for welding/ repair welding of gamma prime strengthened nickel based superalloys and it is also being considered as a suitable replacement for applications where R- 41, Waspaloy, and 263 (UNS N07263) alloys are currently being used. The alloy was designed to have improved resistance to strain age cracking, a problem common to gamma prime strengthened nickel based superalloys. In this paper, we present (1) results from hot ductility testing of annealed and annealed/aged material; (2) results from Time Resolved X-ray Diffraction (TRXRD) studies during a welding thermal cycle of annealed and annealed/aged material, and (3) gas metal arc (GMA) and gas tungsten arc (GTA) welding of annealed and annealed/aged material.

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has been conducting minerals recovery research in support of the nation's geothermal program since 1974. The Bureau's program of laboratory and field studies has focused on determining the materials of construction for geothermal resource recovery plants and an the recovery of mineral values from the geobrines. An analytical program has been conducted at the Avondale Research Center to determine the chemical constituents of some high- and low-salinity geobrines found in the Imperial, Valley of California. Data are reported for the early stages of brine production of femur geothermal wells--the low-salinity, medium-enthalpy brines from the East Mesa Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA), Mesa 6-1 and 6-2, and the high-salinity, high-enthalpy brine from the Salton Sea KGRA, Magmamax 1 and Woolsey 1. The reported results indicate the importance of the operating and engineering history, the operating parameters during sampling, and the method of sampling in order to evaluate the chemical analyses.

Pressure oxidation is a hydrometallurgical oxidative pretreatment for refractory ores, such as sulfide ores. Here, simultaneous alkaline pressure oxidation and sodium cyanide leaching treatments were carried out on a pyritic ore from the Mulatos Mine located in Sahuaripa, Sonora, Mexico. Mineral characterization, agitation leaching, hot cyanidation under atmospheric pressure conditions, simultaneous moderated pressure oxidation and leaching, and kinetic testing results are shown. The modified variables were temperature, pressure, and cyanide concentration. Characterization indicated that pyrite was the main mineral. Simultaneous pressure oxidation and leaching experiments were conducted at a temperature range of 40–80 °C, oxygen pressure of 87.5–200 psi, and cyanide concentration of 0.8–1.2 wt% in a 2-L Parr pressure reactor. A dissolution rate of 81–86% was achieved under the following conditions: 87.5 psi, 80 °C, 0.8 wt% NaCN, for 1 h.

"Mongolia is a country rich in rare earth resources. In the experiments carried out samples of the Mongolian ore were processed to obtain a lanthanide concentrate. The concentrate underwent hydrometallurgical processing. At the same time radioactive elements were removed. The lanthanides were obtained in the form of hydroxides that were further processed in order to get concentrated products. As a result cerium, lanthanum and neodymium-praseodymium concentrates were separated in the process. Also a concentrate of remaining elements: samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium and erbium was obtained. INTRODUCTIONAccording to the assessment of the US Geological Survey, Mongolia possesses 16.77 % of the world total rare earth (RE) resources (Daly, 2011); that is the second largest RE reserve in the world, estimated to be 31 million tonnes in terms of rare earth oxides (REO). In the face of Chinese RE trade restrictions, Mongolia emerged as an important economical partner in mining and exploitation of these critical raw materials. This country is recognized as having more than five large RE deposits in the southern provinces. The most important are Lugeengol (Lugin Gol), Mushgia Khudag, Khotgor and Khalzan Buregtei (Eurasia, 2010). The Mongolian government has taken measures to facilitate western investments, nevertheless the country is economically dependent on China, the basic trading partner, particularly where exports are concerned.In the late 1970s Hydromet Kowary Enterprise, Poland, took up, along with the Wroclaw University of Technology, research and technological study on lanthanides recovery from raw materials of Vietnamese and Mongolian origin and from Indian monazite sands (Kowalczyk, 1990; Kowalczyk & Mazanek, 1987; 1990). For that purpose, a rare earth processing plant had been constructed with the capacity of about 10 t/year of hydroxide concentrate. The facility included several technological operations like grinding, flotation, hydroxide concentrate production in the hydrometallurgical processing, particular RE separation, and production of commercial products in form of CeO2, La2O3, Nd2O3, Pr2O3, and misch metal. Additionally work had been carried out in Kowary on the manufacture of yttrium and europium oxides of high purity, which were intended for color TV picture tube production in Poland."

For the last 50 years, traditional safety management has improved safety performance by: • Fixing the environment (eliminating the hazard). • Improving the system (more/less rules, procedures etc). • Making safety more conscious (more/better interactions about the importance of safety). Although these approaches certainly have merit, and may be part of an overall solution, they are not enough to prevent many modern-day incidents. Today, these three approaches are used more than before, and are used better than ever before. Yet, workplace fatalities in Australia have stagnated from 2013 to 2019, as have the number of incidents, even serious ones. In the USA, workplace fatalities have increased by 15 per cent in the same period.

"Raman spectroscopy is used to quantify the extent of disorder in the carbonaceous matter associated with preg-robbing ores. Previous studies of Goldstrike ores showed that the height and width of the peaks for the “D” (disordered) and “G” (graphite) bands, the so-called “Raman ratio” had a strong correlation to the preg-robbing value (PRV) measured for various ore samples. A brief literature review on Raman spectroscopy as it applies to preg-robbing ores is presented. Further, recent studies, presented here, have shown no correlation between the Raman ratio and the PRV for a wide variety of ores. This suggests that the extent of organic carbon crystal disorder is not the main factor in determining preg-robbing characteristics.INTRODUCTION Preg-robbing may arise from natural carbonaceous materials in the ore. Several mechanisms have been proposed in the past decades including a physical sorption process by the carbonaceous matter, or via the reduction of aurocyanide at the mineral surface (Abotsi & Osseoasare, 1986; Afenya, Osseoasare, & Abotsi, 1983; Tan, Feng, Lukey, & Van Deventer, 2005). Nevertheless, the mechanisms of preg-robbing remain poorly understood. Understanding the nature of the preg-robber is of practical importance for the selection of a suitable treatment process. Fine carbon particles in the ore have been recognized as preg-robbers due to their similarity to the activated carbon used in the carbon in leach (CIL) or carbon in pulp (CIP) processes. Previous research has illustrated that the activated carbon (also referred to as amorphous carbon in some literature) has a much higher absorption ability than pure graphite with high crystallinity (Adams & Burger, 1998). Adams et al (Adams, Swaney, Friedl & Wagner 1996) concluded that carbonaceous matter is largely responsible for the overall preg-robbing capacity of a given ore. However, the mechanism of carbon preg-robbing was still not clear mostly due to the complexity of amorphous carbon and its behavior in different solution matrices, and at different pH and temperature (Adams, 1990, 1993)."

"As the demand of raw materials increases in a global scale due to demographic and economical changes, it is necessary to find technological solutions that improve current production processes in an efficient and sustainable manner. The main objective of this preliminary study is to evaluate the properties of foam produced with a cellulose-based molecule as an alterative to commercial frothing agents in flotation operations. There are two potential advantages identified with the use of cellulose-based additives for the proposed application: i) these chemicals can be produced from sustainable sources (i.e., non-edible crops), and ii) cellulose can be functionalized with chemical groups, in order to rationally modify its behaviour. In previous studies dealing with foam stabilization, it has been proposed that some functionalized cellulose species present a self-assembly mechanism at gas-liquid interfaces. Unlike typical surfactant-based frothers, cellulose molecules form networks around the bubbles that act as protective layers to the mechanical stress and to the occurrence of ionic species. This work studied the properties of foams produced in the presence of a partially hydroxylated cellulose molecule (i.e., hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; HPMC) under various concentrations in a laboratory-scale column. A comparison with a commercial surfactant frother (i.e., Nasfroth 240) is presented, and a rationalization of the behaviour of HPMC in terms of foam properties (i.e., surface tension, bubble size, foam depth) is proposed. INTRODUCTIONThe search for green alternatives to chemicals produced from non-renewable sources has become a topic of major relevance in industry (Choi et al., 2015). As a chemical consuming industry, the mining sector faces now the challenge of adopting new processing technologies and strategies in order to achieve the future demands of sustainability. Evidently, a move towards green chemistry can only take place by identifying substitute molecules offering potential advantages in terms of recovery and grade."

Underground metal mining involves many challenges. Economic slowdown, tough international competition and sometimes volatile metal prices put constant pressure on mine operators to increase productivity and to reduce production cost. At the same time, countries such as Canada, the United States and Australia are experiencing skilled labor shortages that might even stall development of certain mine projects. Furthermore, some stages of underground production take place in particularly hazardous environments where the safety and health of miners is at risk. Automation of some processes in underground mining is one of the promising avenues to alleviate some of these problems. Loading and haulage are among the most critical operations and areas where implementation of autonomous vehicles has been targeted. However, although health and safety issues are a primary driver to opt for automation, the latter should ensure an acceptable level of productivity and pro?tability. With this in mind, this article focuses on the factors affecting operational effectiveness of autonomous underground loading and haulage equipment and the means to maximize it.

Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. In gold mining in Australia, the subsampling tool is usually a cone splitter.Other sources of error, including delimitation error and bias (systematic error) in the subsampler are often assumed to be negligible or ignored for being too difficult to QC.This paper describes actual sampling errors and error mitigation based on quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of surface and underground reverse circulation drill sampling at a high-nugget gold mine at Sunrise Dam, Western Australia.CITATION:Carswell, J T and Sutton, K, 2014. "The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is a major water utility service providing water to over 1.3 million people in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. EBMUD manages 28 dams at 5 terminal and 23 open-cut reservoirs within a 331-square-mile customer service area. As part of a 2012 update on EBMUD’s Infrastructure Rehabilitation Plan for Distribution Reservoirs, EBMUD has decided to replace Central Reservoir, a 152.8 milliongallon open cut reservoir, with optimally sized tanks. This paper presents the results of an analytical comparison of various foundation reinforcement solutions for the proposed tanks including: Cement Deep Soil Mixed (CDSM) columns, vibro stone columns, rammed aggregate piers, and lightweight cellular concrete fill. The computational program GeoMat (www.ensoftinc.com) was used to perform simplified soil structure interaction analyses. Settlement estimates were developed for each alternative with the proposed loading and compared to an allowable differential settlement criterion established at 0.3-inches over a 50 foot length. The authors wish to present the importance of considering mat and soil interaction along with various settlement mitigation methods considered for this challenging project.INTRODUCTIONProject BackgroundCentral Reservoir is an operational open-cut reservoir located north of the intersection of 25th Avenue and East 29th Street in Oakland, California. The reservoir is bound by 23rd Avenue to the west, Sheffield Avenue to the east and Interstate Highway 580 to the north. Originally, the Central Reservoir site was a drainage swale incising into weathered bedrock formed from Pleistocene alluvial deposits. The reservoir was first constructed in 1910 by excavating a basin below grade and constructing an embankment dam on the south and cutting/filling the bedrock and alluvial deposits from the drainage swale. The main dam at the Central Reservoir site is also a DSOD (Department of Safety of Dams) jurisdictional dam and as such is regularly monitored by the EBMUD Materials Engineering Section and the California DSOD.In a 2012 update to EBMUD’s Infrastructure Rehabilitation Plan for Distribution Reservoirs, Central Reservoir was identified as a critical facility that has reached the end of its useful life and must be replaced due to: a failing panel craft lining which contains polychlorinated biphenyls in the interior coating, a roof that does not meet the current seismic code, and reduced operating levels due to potential leakage in the upper portions of the panel craft lining. Furthermore, Central Reservoir is about three times larger than required and is located at a lower elevation than other regional reservoirs in the pressure zone resulting in increased labor-intensive operational challenges and water quality operations.This project presents some challenging geotechnical demands – the site is founded on weakly consolidated Holocene Alluvium overlying weathered bedrock, the proposed structural loads are large, and the new Central Reservoir is to be placed on a pad at an elevation of 182 feet, required placement of up to 30 feet of fill over the current basin. Additionally, the project aims for a long-term foundation solution that will outlive the new replacement tanks and accommodate future site upgrades. In order to meet this goal, the differential settlement criterion for the tanks was ¼ inch over 50 feet length. Lastly, the project also aims to address EBMUD’s increasing trench spoil stockpiles by recycling discarded trench spoils as fill for the proposed tank pad."

A sensor employing yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was used to determine the oxygen activity of molten copper at laboratory scale at temperatures of 1200° and 1300 dc. The reference electrode was a Ni-NiO mixture. The amount of the deoxidizing agent (CU3P) ranged from I to 3% of the mass of copper. Thermodynamic analysis of the Cu-O-P liquid system was carried out to predict the required deoxidizing agent and the final composition of the molten copper. Both results, calculated and experimental, show that the oxygen removal is more efficient at lower temperatures. The kinetics of the deoxidizing reaction is very fast in the first minutes of the treatment. A metalography analysis of rapid cooled samples show the oxygen and phosphorus distribution

"The U.S. coal mining industry uses about 100 million rock anchors per year. ASTM F432 specifies the requirements for rock bolts on mines but does not address corrosion. Corrosion has been found to be an issue in Australian coal mines (Hebblewhite et al., 2003 and Villaescusa et al., 2007), where the problem has been researched and stress corrosion has been found to be a significant cause of rock falls. Corrosion is also a major concern for underground civil construction in the U.S. but has not been considered an issue or adequately researched in coal mines. Underground conditions are conducive to corrosion mainly because of water quality and humid conditions. There is a perception, however, that when bolts are fully grouted, adequate corrosion protection is offered to the steel. Research has shown that this is not necessarily the case, due to the formation of micro-cracks as the resin sets and with subsequent rock movement shearing the resin column. This paper outlines a method to determine the corrosion potential of bolts used in long-term excavations and suggests ways to mitigate such effects based on research conducted in the lab and on three mines.INTRODUCTIONResearch on rock anchor corrosion in mines has not been extensive enough in the past, and the effects of several factors in the mine atmosphere and waters are not clearly understood. One probable reason for this lack of research may be attributed to the time required for gathering meaningful data, which makes the study of corrosion quite challenging.Almost all the rock bolts used in coal mines are made from steel, hence the corrosion of iron needs to be understood. The corrosion of iron is an electrochemical phenomenon with the overall equation"

ZINC, manganese, and aluminum received attention at the two nonferrous metallurgy sessions at the Annual Meeting. L.P. Davidson, general superintendent of the rebuilt Monsanto zinc plant, described its operation, which reflects Polish practice and is really a combination of electrolytic, Waelz, and retort procedure. Briefly, it embraces leaching of roasted concentrate with sulphuric acid, electrolysis of sulphate solution using Tainton lead-silver anodes with ?goulac? added to the electrolyte, treatment of tailing in Waelz kilns, and retorting of the recovered zinc oxide, casting furnace dross and residues. Recovery is good, equipment and maintenance costs low. Ferrate zinc that might be lost in the electrolytic process appears to be recovered as oxide in the Waelz treatment.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of slickensides in mine roof in the Pittsburgh coalbed in a portion of the Valley Camp No.3 mine in southwestern Pennsylvania to improve the potential for prediction of slicken-sided zones and determine the orientations of the most prominent slickensided planes. Two distinct types of slickensides were identified; those which were associated with clay veins observed in the coalbed (genetic), and those which were unrelated to any visible structure (nongenetic). The study draws three conclusions: (1) Nongenetic slickensides are not the result of tectonic forces, (2) both genetic and nongenetic slickensides tend to dip at an angle of 30°, and (3) genetic slickensides tend to be alined parallel to the trend of the clay vein and usually dip toward the center of the clay vein. A schematic roof bolting plan is presented that may provide improved roof support where slickensides are present. Roof stability could be improved by supplemental bolting in the direction normal to the plane of slickensides.

Controlling and predicting ground movements are essential to the design of shoring systems. The Courthouse Commons tunnel in San Diego, California, included a 56-foot-deep temporary shaft as a launching point for tunneling using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The rectangular shaft was unique in that it was surcharged on one wall by an 11-story building and employed a hybrid support of excavation design. An array of geotechnical instrumentation was used to monitor lateral and vertical movements at the ground surface.
