Cemented rockfill (CRF) plays a vital role in pillar-less mining. Many factors are associated with optimum design of a CRF material. Factors like strength, placement method, mixing, curing time, water content, binder contents, binder composition and additives require to be studied for appropriate rockfill design. The most important factor is strength of a CRF. The design engineer considers fill strength requirements (FSR) for the estimation of CRF strength requirements. Inappropriate CRF strength can cause excessive ore dilution. The recent studies on CRF practices at some of the Canadian mines revealed the most common flaws. Comparison of different types of fill determined that most of the failures occur in cemented rockfill, and the compressive strength can be improved by small addition of sand and mine tailings. This work discusses the studies on determination of unconfined compressive strength, Young?s modulus, density and water contents of CRF being placed in the excavated stopes. It was found that the CRF properties were largely influenced by the variation in gradation and curing time. The 7% binder content improved compressive strength of rockfill significantly but it has an influence on the economics, whereas 4% and 5% binder contents are better choices. The maximum Young?s modulus values were obtained at 28 days curing time for most of the samples.

Pegasus Minera de Chile, Ltda. is completing three phases of metallurgical evaluation on the Pullalli project to develop a preliminary process flowsheet. A project feasibility study is in progress. The feasibility study includes a proposed process flowsheet designed based on results from the multiple stages of metallurgical evaluation. Phases I and II of metallurgical evaluation included laboratory scale heap leach and milling cyanidation testwork on multiple drill core composites and bulk ore samples from the Pullalli Project. Phase Ill included pilot scale milling/cyanidation testwork on Pullalli drill core composites. The proposed flowsheet includes selective mining and separate processing of low grade and high grade ores. Low grade ore will be crushed and heap leached. High grade ore will be milled leached for 12 hours in an agitated cyanidation circuit. After 12 hours of leaching, sands and slimes will be separated and the sands will be washed using a counter current cyclone (CCC) circuit. Partially leached and washed sands will be added to the crushed low grade ore for heap leaching treatment and permanent placement. Partially leached slimes will be thickened in a high capacity thickener and will be processed in a CIP circuit. Leached slimes will be placed in a tailings impoundment.

The base metal industry mines and processes hundreds of million tonnes of ore per annum to produce saleable products and large tonnages of waste by-products such as tailings. These ores usually contain less than 1 wt per cent of toxic elements (As, Sb, Bi, Cd, Se, Te, Hg, etc), which are subsequently treated with the other components in the ore during the production of concentrate through to saleable metal products. The deportments of minor elements across the various unit operations of a process flow sheet do not normally receive the attention that the major elements receive. However, these minor elements can have a major influence on the quality of the products as well as an economic and environmental impact. Therefore, a high degree of control over their deportments is a key step in reducing their dispersion in the biosphere. Ongoing work at CSIRO has been examining minor element deportments across unit processes used for smelting and refining and the options for early removal of minor elements, as well as methods for safe disposal of some toxic elements. This paper provides an overview of the R&D activities undertaken at CSIRO to develop tools and methodologies for improved management of minor elements during the processing of sulfide ores.

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) is a quite diffuse environmental problem in dismissed sulphur mine districts. AMD is related to sulphur oxidation of abandoned tailings, generating heavy metal-bearing streams with high iron and sulphate contents and low pH. Treatments of AMD aim firstly to increase the pH to reduce its leaching power causing the further release and mobilization of heavy metals through soil solution and groundwaters. Increasing the pH also allows the precipitation of iron (III) (involved in sulphur oxidation and then in AMD generation) and the partial removal of other toxic components such as arsenic. pH adjustment and the reduction of the high concentration of iron are also necessary for the successive biological treatment in permeable reactive barriers (PRB) with sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) (II step, biologically mediated precipitaton/biosorption) to avoid the rapid plugging of the barrier (for the large amounts of iron precipitates) and to ensure neutral pH conditions for SRB growth. In this work the first step (chemical precipitation) of a combined chemical and biological treatment of AMD is presented. Experimental data from column tests using carbonate stones to remove iron and increase pH were reported. Toxicity tests have been carried out on the treated wastewaters by Lepidium sativum.

Cerro Vangaurdia Gold Mine is a joint venture between AngloGold (the operator), Perez Companc and Formicruz and is situated in the southern province of Santa Cruz, in Argentina, approximately 2,150 km south of the capital, Buenos Aires. The mine is located in a severe, semi-arid environment with very cold winters and little annual rainfall (200mm). It is an open-pit operation, mining several narrow, shallow epithermal quartz veins with . gold and silver mineralisation. Commissioning of the plant commenced in September 1998 and the first dore bar was poured towards the end of the same month. The nominal capacity of the plant is 55,000 tonnes per month, with a design capacity of 60,000 tonnes per month. Prior to finalising the design, an extensive testwork programme was undertaken at Nova Lima, in Brazil, in which all parts of the process were evaluated together on a pilot-plant scale. The process flowsheet selected at Ce1rn Vanguardia is quite novel, in that it includes milling in cyanide, as well as a cyanide recovery and recycling plant on the tailings section of the treatment plant is included. The cyanide recovery process selected was a version of the acidification - volatilization - reabsorption (AVR) process, known as Cyanisorb™. The use of CCD (counter current decantat.io;1) thickeners, or; clarifiers, in the gold mining industry is quite common. Although there are a number of technologies in the industry which utilize these types of tanks, the fundamental requirement is to settle leach tailings and eventually separate gold and silver "values" from the "barren" (no values) solution. The thickener separation process varies depending upon the raw ores found in any specific mine. In mines where rudimentary, rocky ores are most common the settling process is fairly straight-forward and uncomplicated. But, for those mines with complex carbonaceous ores, usually identified by high silting, clay components, the ability to monitor and control the settled materials is quite laborious and costly. The task of monitoring and maintaining control of settled residue in clarifiers and thickeners, of any design, is difficult in any industry, but due to the added desire in the gold mining industry of leaching the values from the liquid slurry, the problem is multiplied. Other common activities taking place in the thickeners are exaggerated internal flow rates, settleable solids activity due to rake movement, and the settling activity generated by flocculents being added to the liquid medium. All of this action within the liquid column causes the continual monitoring of the interfaces within the tank close to impossible.

"In December, 1999 Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) commissioned a new paste /cement backfill plant to supplement the existing sand backfill system for the cut and fill mining operation at it’s Nye, Montana mine. The new plant uses the Baker Process Deep Cone TM Paste Thickener to thicken the total concentrator tailings from 30% solids slurry to a 71% solids paste. This paper describes both general paste formation concepts and the evolution of the SMC paste plant operation from original design criteria, through problem solving and plant modifications, to the operation of the existing plant.Although the original process design was not effective for consistently producing and delivering acceptable paste to the stopes for backfill, SMC was able to make the mechanical and process modifications which allow the plant to now produce and deliver an acceptable product to the stopes. Ongoing test work is targeted at increasing the pumping range of the system, increasing the paste solids concentration from the Deep Cone Paste Thickener and reducing the operating and maintenance costs of the system.INTRODUCTIONThe authors would like to thank both Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) and Baker Process for their assistance in the preparation of this paper. This paper describes an investigation of the sampling problems which contributed to erroneous Concentrator production forecasts at the mining operation of Bougainville Copper Ltd (BCL) in the North Solomons province of Papua/New Guinea.Reference figures provided by independently verified commercial shipment data demonstrated the existence of a bias in the calculated Concentrator production; the challenge was to identify systematic errors in each of the contributory measurements (feed tonnage and feed, tailings and concentrate grades).The uncertainty surrounding specific sampling and measurement errors precluded optimum metallurgical control and performance of the milling circuit, encouraged disputes about the difference between Mine versus Concentrator production estimates, and cast some doubt on efforts to follow political guidelines concerning a maximum feed tonnage or recovery oriented mill operating concept.An evaluation of routine results as well as specifically targeted test work identified the sampling errors associated with measured individual parameters.The emphasis in this report is on the procedure for quantitative error assessments.The measured performance of a mineral dressing plant is subject to a systematic error balance which can be derived from the more familiar weight and metal balances such as the two- or three-product formula.The resulting equations are generally valid, and they are applied to the measurements obtained at BCL's Concentrator to illustrate the method.

SL-type continuous centrifugal separator with injection flow (Injection Flowing Film Centrifugation, IFFC) for separating fine and ultra-fine minerals has been developed recently in China and it is capable of recovering particles down to one micron in size. In this paper, the principle of its separation is discussed. IFFC is a special transient pulsating film which combines both thin film jigging and thin film concentration functions. It not only can intensify the looseness and stratification of the settled particles, but also create a hydraulic weir effect to improve recovery of fines and ultra- fines and significantly improve the performance of thin film separation. In a Chinese tin gravity concentrator, SL devices, SL-1200s (capacity 1.5-2.0 ton/hr) and SL-600s (capacity 0.5 ton/hr) were applied to treat -1 0 micron cassiterite slime(removed as tailings at the past) and to replace the old tin flotation system(-74+10 micron slime). The plant results show that 50-60% of the cassiterite can be recovered from -10 micron slime with an enrichment ratio of 10-12. Particle down to one micron were recovered. Under optimal conditions, the recovery from -74+10 micron slime can reach more than 85%. The recoverable size range can be determined by calculation.

The flotation circuit handling Peko ore at Peko Mines N.L. was examined in July 1970 with a view to determining simple changes in circuitry or reagents which could improve the grade and recovery of the final copper concentrates. The investigation included sampling over one shift followed by detailed testing of the samples by sizing-assays, sizing-mineralogy and sizing-liberation. Mass balances were carried out over total streams, the component minerals and the copper contents. Some laboratory work was carried out to assess the effect of salinity on flotation. In order to handle the sizing-mineralogy calculations a computer programme was set up. The raw data were corrected for locking factors, then mineral and elemental distributions cal- culated for each screen fraction and the total sample. Calculated assays from grain counting were compared with chemical assays. Recoveries through the size-ranges re- vealed very rapid flotation of copper minerals at sizes below 350 mesh. This pointed to a possible circuit improvement by desliming rougher tailings ahead of the scavenger stage. A strong correlation was found between water in concentrates and gangue recovery for the subsieve sizes. WHEN the roughing tables operated in 1923 were abandoned, all the coarse iron pyrite for-merly removed by the tables had to be ground to flotation size, which caused an increased power con-sumption of 2 kw.-hr. per ton. Recently, by increasing the tonnage, this has been reduced to a total of 16.6 kw.-hr. per ton. The cost of repairs has been slightly reduced by using an alkaline circuit instead of the acid mine water used in 1923. Other economies from elim-inating roughing tables and the finishing tables have more than compensated for the extra grinding and the total costs have remained practically the same, until the first part of 1927, when, with increased tonnage, the total cost has decreased to 72 cents and the repair cost to 9 cents. In 1923, with a combined gravity and bulk flotation flowsheet, the grade of concentrate was only 4.38 per cent copper. With preferential flotation this has in-creased to over 17 per cent copper. The tailing has decreased from 0.29 per cent -copper to 0.18 per cent. The copper recovery, instead of decreasing; as might be expected, has increased from 87.4 per cent to, 91.5 per cent. Ion Exchange is finding a greater role in copper processing, and hydrometallurgy in general, both as a technique for removing impurities and as a means of adding value through the recovery of secondary metals. Both the gold and uranium industries use resin adsorption as a primary production technique. While hydrometallurgical processes predominantly rely on solvent extraction as the mainstay of copper recovery there are a number of projects, in particular polymetallic deposits, which are considering the use of resin recovery as an alternative or supplemental production technique. A number of applications have been developed and proven at commercial scale for the removal/control of impurities (iron, antimony and bismuth) from copper electrolytes. These are well documented ion exchange applications. Increasing metal values and scarcity of certain metals are focusing companies to look at secondary metals recovery rather than losing these often highly valuable metals to tails residues. Bleed streams are being seen as valuable opportunities to recover contained metals; iron, copper, nickel, cobalt, bismuth, antimony and rhenium are all metals being targeted for removal or recovery from process solutions, electrolytes and bleed streams. An overview of currently applied techniques as well as some developmental technologies for impurity removal and secondary metals recovery is presented to provide insight into the advantages and flexibility of ion exchange applications in metals processing.

A unique process for removing cyanide and base metal complexes from industrial waste streams was patented by G.J. Borberly et al. (1984). The process uses SO2 (liquid or gas, or solutions of sulfite salts, or from burning elemental sulfur), plus air that is dispersed in the effluent using a well agitated vessel. Acid produced in the oxidation reactions is neutralized with lime at a controlled pH generally in the range 7 to 10. The reaction requires the presence of soluble copper as a catalyst which can be supplemented by copper sulfate if necessary. The process can be applied to the detoxification of gold and silver mining waste streams, such as carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailing pulps, barren solution bleeds, pond waters and heap leach rinse solutions and also to plating shops wastewaters. The SO.jAir process has substantial advantages over two of the main alternative methods of cyanide destruction, namely alkaline chlorination and hydrogen peroxide. Alkaline chlorination is highly penalized in terms of reagent consumption. Chlorine is a strong oxidant reacting with species other than cyanide present in the effluent such as thiocyanate and sulfides. Furthermore alkaline chlorination is an incomplete detoxification process. Iron cyanide is not removed and the potential for harmful by-products species exist. Consequently final effluents may be subject to additional treatment in order to comply with regulatory demands.

Preliminary results are reported regarding the design and development of a pilot scale air sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal 590 pm (- 28 mesh) containing 24% ash and 1.6% sulfur. The principle of separation is the flotation of hydrophobic coal particles in the centnjugal field generated by the fluid flow in the air sparged hydrocyclone as discussed in another publication. This 152-mm (6-in.) hydrocyclone has a nominal capacity of 0.9 t/h (1 tph) and experimental results suggest that separations vastly superior to a water-only cyclone are possible. In addition the separation efficiency is as good, if not better, than that achieved with conventional flotation cells. For example, typical results indicate that 75% clean coal can be recovered at 15% ash leaving a tailing product of almost 50% ash. These experimental results coupled with the high capacity of the air sparged hydrocyclone (imagine a retention time for flotation of only two seconds compared to two minutes for conventional flotation) may represent a significant breakthrough, not only in coal preparation technology, but in the flotation of fine particles in general.

The thiosulfate lixiviant system for leaching of gold has been under extensive investigation for nearly two decades and consists of ammonium thiosulfate, copper and ammonia. There are several challenges with this system. The occurrence of ammonia must be taken into account from a health and hygiene aspect in the workplace, and also from an environmental perspective with significant levels of ammonia and copper in the tailings. Copper accelerates the leaching rate but causes excessive thiosulfate degradation. A new lixiviant system that has been investigated consists only of sodium thiosulfate without copper and ammonia. Gold leaching is carried out in an enclosed reactor with slightly elevated oxygen overpressure and temperature. Extensive leaching experiments were carried out to minimize thiosulfate degradation and polythionate formation while maximizing the gold extraction. For the preg-robbing carbonaceous ore sample tested, gold leaching was essentially complete within six hours and the thiosulfate consumption was lower than in the typical ammoniacal thiosulfate system. The gold thiosulfate complex in the pregnant leach solution was found to be quite stable under ambient conditions. This new leaching system has the advantages of being more environmentally friendly, has a shorter residence time, lower thiosulfate consumption, lower oxygen consumption, and is easier to control.

Introduction In this technical note, pilot-scale tests with two types of gravity concentrators, the Knelson separator (Anon., 1983; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984) and the Mark VIIA Reichert spiral concentrator (Balderson, 1982; Forssberg and Johansson, 1984), are described. The experimental work was concentrated on the relatively untried Knelson separator. The materials tested have different concentration characteristics: one was an artificial ore with excellent liberation characteristics and with a wide difference in density between valuable and gangue minerals; the others include a spiral concentrate containing gold from the gravity circuit of Boliden, Sweden, an old scheelite tailing from Yxsjöberg, Sweden, and an auriferous ore, containing gold, that had not been crushed to full liberation. The latter three materials contained other heavy minerals, e.g. pyrite, that can interfere with concentration. Knelson separator The Knelson separator is a compact centrifugal separator with an active fluidized bed to capture heavy minerals. A centrifugal force equal to or exceeding 50 times the force of gravity acts on the particles. The strong centrifugal force traps the heavier particles in a series of rings located in the concentrator while gangue particles are flushed out (Fig. 1). The particular separator used in the tests has a 15-cm (6-in.) diam bowl and can process between ~70 and ~250 kg/h.

Since 1978, the nickel concentrator at Leinster has been subject to continuous change. In 1971 a significant nickel sulphide deposit was discovered on Leinster Downs Station, within three years the extent of the deposit was determined. In 1978 the Agnew Mining Company began production of nickel concentrate from the Perseverance Mine and continued to do so until production ceased in 1986. In 1988 WMC purchased the mothballed project and began the first phase of many expansion initiatives. Milestones in the life of Leinster have included:open cut mining of the Perseverance orebody and the discovery of the RockyÆs Reward orebody, as well as the metallurgical challenges in treating each of these; underground mining at both Perseverance and RockyÆs Reward; construction and commissioning of the WMC grinding and flotation circuits; variations in the reagent schemes, including the introduction of æliquidÆ reagents; development of mill linings to reduce maintenance; circuit re-configuration and simplification; development of Harmony open cut; strategies for increasing throughput at the drier; and changes to tailings facilities to cope with increased throughput. This paper outlines the steps which have been required to expand the Leinster Nickel Concentrator from 650 000 tpa to 2.5 Mtpa and those steps which will be required in the future.

With the increasing importance being placed upon modernizing the coal industry as a result of recent developments in the international energy balance, computer control has been and is being instituted in many coal cleaning plants. Control techniques that are well established in many base metal industries have been adapted to coal washing. Essential to any control scheme is an accurate measure of the parameter which is to be controlled. A sensor is required that will provide information both quickly and precisely. In fine coal circuits, the critical parameter that must be measured and controlled is the per- cent ash contained in the clean coal product and tailings. Measuring the ash content of these slurry lines on a continuous basis enables the operating conditions in the circuit to be adjusted so as to obtain optimum separation efficiencies at all times. An on-line ash monitor has been developed and tested at Michigan Technological University which is capable of making percent ash and percent solids determinations instantaneously. Two radioisotopes are employed in this system to generate signals that can be related to the density and the ash content of the slurry. Such data provide a means to execute a short term control strategy.

Copper minerals are often associated with gold ores. These create processing problems since cyanide solutions are not selective for gold alone. Copper minerals are also leached by cyanide, and typically each one per cent of `reactive' copper in the ore consumes about 30 kg t 1 cyanide. Once in solution, copper cyanide species create further processing problems as they adsorb onto carbon along with the dicyanoaurate ion. These problems make conventional cyanidation of gold ore uneconomic if the ore contains too much copper. As a result, methods of economically processing gold-copper ores are becoming of increasing importance.One of the more promising methods of treating these ores is by selective leaching of the gold by an ammoniacal cyanide solution, a method first described by Hunt in 1901. This method is already in commercial use in Mauritania, treating copper/gold tailings. In general terms, the addition of I - 2 g U1 ammonia to a standard cyanide leach solution causes a significant increase in gold extraction and decrease in copper extraction. However, early testwork on this system has concluded that the optimal leach conditions are critically dependent on ore composition, and the mechanism is not well understood, making predictions of best conditions impossible.
