"The Maurice Bay deposit, the Stewart Island showing, the Fond-du-Lac deposit, the Middle Lake showing and the Nisto deposit are located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin. They are probably unconformity-related. These occurrences tend to be small. The Fond-du-Lac and Maurice Bay deposits are the largest and contain 450,000 kg and 650,000 kg of U10 8 respectively.Pitchblende is the main uranium mineral of all the occurrences, except at Middle Lake where autunite predominates. A II of the deposits are overlain and partially hosted by the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group, except the Nisto deposit which is entirely within basement rocks, and the Maurice Bay deposit which is partially within the basement and overlying the Fair Point Formation of the Athabasca Group.The North Rim deposits are considered to be genetically similar to the other unconformity-type deposits found in northern Saskatchewan. It is suggested that a mechanical concentration of uranium may have occurred in heavy mineral beach sand type placers. The stability of the uranium minerals may have been enhanced by special local conditions. The fossil placers, after hydrothermal alteration and enrichment, would form the apparently ""rootless"" occurrences of uranium found totally within the sandstones above the unconformity.IntroductionAt least five deposits and showings and one train of mineralized glacial erratics of unknown provenance have been located on the North Rim of the Athabasca Basin from Maurice Bay in the west to Black Lake in the east. Distributed over a distance of 250 km, (Fig. l), they occur near the edge of the Basin, and are probably unconformity-related. The chemistry of current or potential SO2 removal processes can be placed into four categories: (1) reduction, (2) Liquefaction, (3) direct dissolution, and (4) oxidation. Methods that involve reducing SO2 to elemental sulfur appear promising since this product can be easily handled, shipped, and stock- piled. Unfortunately, SO2 cannot always be reduced directly when other oxidizing agents are present. Thermodynamic data indicate that some oxidizing reagents will also consume reductant at the reduction temperature. A two- stage process can be applied to waste gases that contain excessive quantities of oxygen, nitrogen oxides, and water vapor. The best sorbent for the first stage appears to be a nonalkali or nonalkaline earth medium since this medium more readily releases the SO2 for reduction in the second stage.

There is evidence to suggest that cell injury induced in alveolar macrophages (AM) following phagocytic activation by silica particles may be mediated through changes in intracellular free calcium [Ca 2+}. However, the mechanism of silicainduced cytotoxicity relative to [Ca2+], overloading is not yet clear. To provide a better insight into this mechanism, isolated rat AMs were exposed to varying concentrations of crystalline silica (particle size< 5 µm in diameter) and the fluctuation in their [Ca2+]; and cell integrity were quantitatively monitored with the fluorescent calcium probe, Fura-2 AM, and the membrane integrity indicator, propidium iodide (Pl). Results from this study indicate that silica can rapidly increase [Ca2+]; in a dose-dependent manner with a characteristic transient calcium rise at low doses (<0.1 mg/ml) and an elevated and sustained rise at high doses (>0.1 mg/ml). Depletion of extracellular calcium [Ca 2+]0 markedly inhibited the [Ca2+]; rise (˜90%), suggesting that Ca2+ influx from extracellular source is a major mechanism for silica-induced [Ca2+]; rise. When used at low doses but sufficient to cause a transient [Ca2+]; rise, silica did not cause significant increase in cellular Pl uptake during the time of study, suggesting the presevation of membrane integrity of AMs under these conditions. At high doses of silica, however, a marked increase in Pl nuclear fluorescence was observed. Depletion of [Ca 2+] 0 greatly inhibited cellular Pl uptake, induced by 0. 1 mg/ml or higher doses of silica. This suggests that Ca 2 + influx, as a result of silica activation, is associated with cell injury. Indeed, our results further demonstrated that the low dose effect of silica on Ca 2+ influx is inhibited by the Ca2+ channel blocker nifedipine. At high doses of silica (>0.1 mg/ml), cell injury was not prevented by nifedipine or extracellular Ca2+ depletion, suggesting that other cytotoxic mechanisms, i.e., nonspecific membrane damage due to lipid peroxidation, are also responsible for the silica-induced cell injury. Silica had no significant effect on cellular ATP content during the time course of the study, indicating that the observed silicainduced (Ca2 ... ); rise was not due to the impairment of Ca2 + -ATPase pumps, which restricts Ca2+ efflux. Pretreatment of the cells with cytochalasin B to block phagocytosis failed to prevent the effect of silica on [Ca2+]; rise. Taken together, these results suggest that the elevation of [Ca2+]; caused by silica is due mainly to Ca2+ influx through plasma membrane Ca2+,channels and nonspecific membrane damage (at high doses). Neither ATP depletion nor Ca2+ leakage during phagocytosis was attributed to the silica-induced [Ca2+]; rise.

"Under certain conditions useful gravity information of a reconnaissance nature can be obtained with-out measuring elevations by spirit level surveys on the ground. Gravity surveys can become part of a practical exploration program where high cost and slow progress previously hindered their utility. The advantages of the new elevation procedures are realized mainly in remote areas, in areas where ground transportation is slow and difficult and on surveys where the station spacing is large in comparison with the distance of the average optimum level shot. To utilize the advantages, transportation by helicopter or light plane is usually necessary. Methods of obtaining elevation control without leveling include: barometric altimeter survey; photogram-metric -APR spot determinations; methods involving the measurement of gravity gradients. The accuracies of these methods have been tested and compared with the normal accuracy of level surveys. It is felt that each method has its place in reconnaissance gravity work, particularly in the open areas of Northern Canada."

Ore definition for final stope planning is often a challenging prospect in underground (UG) gold mines which exhibit high geological and grade variability. Unlike the grade control (GC) scenario in an open pit (OP), the ability for the mining geologist to plan a sampling campaign which effectively characterises the underlying mineralisation is fraught with difficulty. UG sampling patterns are strongly clustered and typically not dense enough to characterise the spatial and statistical properties. Very commonly, sample volumes are not large enough to provide a reliable grade estimate of the surrounding rock. These factors critically affect our ability to accurately map out ore positions and estimate metal quantities.At Sunrise Dam, traditional UG sampling and modelling techniques have proven to be an unreliable strategy for successful stope planning and extraction. The problem was first observed during the final cut-back in the open pit for which the mineral resource model was constructed from UG diamond drilling. Open Pit grade control reconciliations were strongly positive for both tonnage and grade compared to the resource model. Underground workings missed significant quantities of ore which was laterally defined by open pit reverse circulation (RC) GC drilling. Upon examination it was realised that the cause of the problem was one of inadequate sample density and sample support, the implications of which potentially affected the entire UG mine.As part of a broader study into underground grade control procedures, detailed reconciliation of initial stope production from the GQ domain also pointed to inadequate sampling as a major constraint to effective grade control and reserve conversion.To overcome this deficiency, dense 115 mm wet RC grade control drilling and conditional simulation modelling has been successfully implemented with the intent to replicate the grade control process in the open pit. The increase in sample density and sample volume has proven to be a very effective tool for mapping out highly complex mineralisation. A marked improvement in stope definition, reserve conversion and Mine to Mill reconciliations has been demonstrated on the back of an innovative approach to UG grade control.CITATION:Clark, F and Carswell, J T, 2014. "Chalcopyrite, a major source of copper, is commonly found associated with iron sulfides, particularly pyrite. The separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite by flotation is difficult due to the galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite during grinding and flotation. Galvanic interactions may cause oxidation and dissolution of chalcopyrite, copper activation of pyrite and the formation of hydrophilic iron hydroxide coating. The overall effect may change the floatability of the components and lead to the misplacement of pyrite into chalcopyrite concentrate. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of lignosulfonate-based biopolymers on the depression of pyrite in the flotation of chalcopyrite with xanthate as collector and the mechanism responsible for the selective depression of pyrite. The flotation results showed that biopolymers depressed the flotation of both copper-activated pyrite and chalcopyrite in single mineral flotation although to different extents. In the flotation of mixed mineral systems, biopolymers significantly depressed pyrite flotation but had a less influence on chalcopyrite flotation. The selective depression of pyrite by biopolymers was due to the preferential adsorption of biopolymers on copper-activated pyrite surface. Galvanic interactions between pyrite and chalcopyrite surfaces promoted copper activation on pyrite. Presence of cuprous ions on pyrite surface favored biopolymer adsorption by the formation of a complex between the cuprous ions and biopolymer molecules. The same galvanic interactions also facilitated chalcopyrite oxidation leading to the formation of hydrophobic polysulfide that enhanced the hydrophobicity on chalcopyrite surface. The biopolymer structure controlled the depression effect. The results showed that the biodegradable biopolymers are promising depressants for pyrite.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulfide minerals, such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), bornite (Cu5FeS4), chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS), are the major mineral source for copper. They are often found finely interlocked with iron sulfides, especially pyrite (FeS2) (Owusu, Brito e Abreu, Skinner, Addai-Mensah, & Zanin, 2014). Pyrite, as the most abundant sulfide mineral, is perceived as gangue in most cases and should be removed from the associated sulfides to minimize its contamination of the copper concentrate (Owusu, Addai-Mensah, Fornasiero, & Zanin, 2013; Wang & Forssberg, 1991). The commonly used strategy to remove pyrite is flotation (Wang & Forssberg, 1991)."

There is a need for direct tailpipe sampling of diesel vehicles in mines in order to determine the effects of an emissions-based maintenance program, evaluate control technologies such as diesel particulate filters and identify the worst diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitters in a fleet of vehicles. therefore, this study examined the performance of three portable instruments: a personal dust monitor (PDM) manufactured by thermo Scientific, a prototype elemental carbon monitor (Airtec) manufactured by FLIr and a prototype Ae91 instrument from Magee Scientific. These instruments were evaluated on the basis of their ability to provide direct reading tailpipe analysis for DPM. It was determined that the average bias of the tailpipe results from the PDM and the Airtec were 3±12% and 4±20%, respectively, when compared to the standard method of determining tailpipe particulate concentrations from a diluted exhaust. It was also determined that the Ae91 instrument correlated with the standard method.

Finely sized Upper Freeport coals are beneficiated to reduce ash and sulfur using high-intensity magnetic separation to process both (1) raw, untreated coal as well as (2) raw coal which was pre-treated thermally with steam and air. Substantial, sulfur and ash reduction can be obtained using both approaches to magnetic beneficiation of coal fines, but evidence indicates that pre-treatment which would constitute a costly supplementary step is technically inferior to the direct beneficiation of raw, untreated coal. These bench-scale studies demonstrate that if high-intensity,; high capacity, dry, magnetic beneficiation equipment can be developed and&apos; installed at coal burning power plants or at appropriate points in coal preparation plants substantial quantities of sulfur may be removable from coal after pulverization as a means&apos; to reduce air pollution.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to produce metallized pellets from domestic iron ore superconcentrates using lignite and subbituminous coal as reductants. Feed materials for the metallizing process consisted of commercially indurated iron oxide pellets and green pellets prepared from upgraded domestic concentrates with graphite or limestone as internal additives. Durability of the green pellets during metallization was investigated in tests conducted in a 7-inch-ID rotating drum furnace. Test results indicated that the major cause of pellet disintegration with the concentrates used was the tumbling action during reduction rather than forces generated within the pellets. In larger scale tests made in a 34-inch-ID by 35-foot-long kiln, the previously indurated pellets were metallized with lignite at 1,030° C with little disintegration. A 96-percent level of metallization was obtained in pellets having an average compressive strength of 420 lb. In subsequent, similar tests using green pellets containing graphite or limestone, pellet disintegration was more severe, with 10 to 40 percent of the feed being lost as dust. The surviving pellets had metallizations ranging from 88.3 to 94.4 percent and compressive strengths ranging from 60 to 68 lb.

THE Caletones copper smelter of the Braden Copper Co. is in the " Teniente" mining district about SO km. (49.7 mi.) southeast of Santiago, Chile. From the seaports of San Antonio and Tralparaiso, the property is reached via the Chilean State Railway (66-in. gage) to Rancagua, whence the Braden railroad (30-in. gage) leads to the smelting plant at Caletones, 60 km. away at 5100 ft. elevation, and continues on to the mine and concentrator at Sewell, at 7000 ft. elevation, 12 km. farther into the Andes. The smelting plant was completed and put into commission in February, 1922. At the start, it smelted daily 750 tons of concentrates produced at Sewell from 10,000 tons of ore; later, its capacity was increased to 900 tons of concentrates from 12,000 tons of ore per day; and it is now being increased to 1100 tons of concentrates from 15,000 tons of ore per day. There is a lack of electrochemical studies of oxidized gold ores since the majority of previous studies were conducted with sulphidic gold ores. In this study, the influence of agitation and iron oxide minerals, i.e. magnetite, hematite, and maghemite on gold leaching was investigated by means of galvanic and passivation phenomena. Cyclic voltammetry studies of Roasted Gold Ore (RGO) in de-aerated electrolyte have shown one oxidation and one reduction reaction while three oxidation and one reduction peaks were observed with gold electrode. Galvanic coupling results by Zero Resistance Ammeter (ZRA) mode indicated that magnetite showed a negative effect on gold dissolution while maghemite and hematite showed a positive effect, relatively, as a result of higher galvanic corrosion rates. Generally, gold dissolution was found to increase in the initial 15 minutes. Increasing agitation speed from 100 to 400 rpm resulted in higher galvanic corrosion rates for RGO, magnetite, and maghemite electrodes, while 250 rpm was found to be optimum for hematite electrode. Passive products such as silver and iron-oxide were identified by XPS and SEM-EDS analysis, respectively.

The ever increasing demand for energy and the progressive depletion of crude oil resources, have renewed interest in oil shale as an alternative fuel resource. Weathered oil shale samples were assembled from El-Nakheil phosphate mine in Quseir area, Eastern desert, Egypt. The oil shale samples were prepared and analyzed by XRD (X-ray diffraction), XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectrometry), and optical microscopic techniques. Rock-Eval pyrolysis and total organic carbon were used to study shale hydrocarbon potential. A leaching procedure using inorganic and organic acids was used to selectively dissolve the oil shale associated ash forming minerals. XRD results showed that calcite is the dominant carbonate mineral, whereas primary silicate minerals are quartz and montmorillonite. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observations indicated that the organic matter is dispersed throughout the rock matrix. The acid soluble fraction upon leaching was determined to be 37.59 and 42.74 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. The TOC was increased from 20.78 to 29.88 and 34.09 wt% by using 5% HCl and 10% HCl, respectively. Introduction The great importance of air warfare during World War II and the introduction of large-scale air transportation and airborne operations created an immediate demand for large quantities of high quality light alloy products. Before this war, the use of magnesium, the lightest structural metal, was barely in the development stage, and considerable research work was needed to overcome difficulties in improving its properties and to attain uniform quality in mass production of magnesium alloy products. The Canadian Bureau of Mines was frequently called upon, by various agencies of the Armed Forces and of the newly established war industries, to examine magnesium alloys that had failed in fabrication or in actual service, and to advise on proper alloys and fabrication methods to be used. Failures in magnesium alloy castings were connected mainly with lack of knowledge of proper founding and surface-protecting techniques. Most of the defects were due to microporosity and faulty heat treatment. To aid the foundry industry, small-scale investigations were started on the effect of various factors in the casting technique in order to improve the quality of the products. These investigations were made in co-operation with representatives of the Armed Forces and the Canadian magnesium industry. This work was later co-ordinated into a broad research programme on magnesium alloys, comprising problems on melting, refining, various casting methods, heat treatment, and testing of properties of standard and special alloys. This research programme? is still in force, and the present paper contains some results of the first series of investigations on magnesium casting alloys carried out at the Experimental Foundry of the Bureau of Mines.

"This paper provides an assessment of the current challenges in strategic mine planning and design and suggested approaches for addressing them. The specific challenges covered are: realistic quantification of downstream processes applied to orebody models to provide an integrated approach to mine design and optimisation modelling, estimation and simulation of geometallurgical variables and their integration into resource and reserve estimation and mine planning modelling, estimation and simulation of new variables for new forms of mining – deep mining, particularly block caving, and solution mining flexibility in planning and design to manage risk and minimise its impact information technology (IT) infrastructure and platforms for rapid online data collection, storage, access and processing.Most of these challenges require new types of data, variables, modelling and estimation methods. Foremost among the new types of variables and data are geometallurgical and dynamic rock mass characterisation variables. THE demand for high-quality aggregate is increasing in all phases of the construction industry and in all organizations associated with road building in Canada. The production of aggregate in Canada has increased almost continuously since the end of the war and has quadrupled since 1948. Increases during the past fifteen years can be accounted for by the expansion in all types of construction, particularly that of roads and highways. Total construction in 1959, based on preliminary estimates, has been valued at $7 billion, and an increase fore-cast for 1960 indicates optimism on the •construction horizon (1). Cement produced in Canada in 1959 amounted to 6.3 million tons. This is more than 2.5 times the 1948 production. Increased cement production indicates an increased use of concrete, and thus an increased need for aggregate. Natural sand and gravel deposits are gradually being depleted.

"The concept of using chemical methods in prospecting dates back at least to the middle of the 16th century. Modern methods of geochemical prospecting, however, based on secondary haloes and utilizing trace-element techniques, were first practised in the U.S.S.R. and the Scandinavian countries in the 1930's. After 1945, methods based on soils, stream sediments and vegetation were rapidly developed in the U.S.A., the United Kingdom, Canada, France and other countries.The modern methods of geochemical prospecting owe their rapid development in the 20th century to the following:1.-Recognition of the primary and secondary dispersion haloes and trains that are associated with all mineral deposits. 2.-Development of accurate and rapid analytical methods utilizing the spectrograph and the various specific sensitive colorimetrie reagents, especially dithizone. 3.-Development of polyethylene laboratory ware of all types and the development of resins. This permitted greater freedom of field analyses and reduced the incidence of contamination.4.-Development of gas chromatography. This permitted the rapid and accurate determination of hydrocarbons in petroleum prospecting.Future research in geochemical prospecting should be focused on the following tasks: 1.-Definition of geochemical provinces and their relation to mineral deposits. 2.-Development of methods for discovering large low-grade deposits. 3.-Development of methods for discovering deeply buried deposits. 4.-Further development of methods to outline primary haloes. 5.-Eiucidation and formulation of techniques to relate the size and intensity of anomalies to the grade of the deposits. 6.-Development and refinement of biogeochemical methods, especially those based on indicator plants, chlorotic or toxic effects, and microbiological techniques. 7.-Definition of the types of primary and secondary haloes associated with accumulations of oil and gas."

In 1989 an Autogenous Grinding Task Force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding at the National Steel Pellet Plant located in Keewatin, Minnesota. Pilot plant test work performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC) indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could feasibly be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing ten grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. The full scale test work conducted in 1990 and 1991 verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit utilizing pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits.

"Detection of outliers is an important primary step in geomodelling. Geological datasets often contain errors due to problems such as measurement device limitations and recording glitches. In this paper, a robust Mahalanobis distance–based approach is successfully applied to particle size distributions of the Joslyn lease, an oil sands development site near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Automatic outlier detection and geological review were combined. Outliers from the Mahalanobis distance approach were compared with their respective core photographs to determine if laboratory measurements and facies classification were correct. A checking procedure for laboratory technicians is proposed.RÉSUMÉ La détection des valeurs aberrantes constitue une étape primaire importante de la modélisation géologique. Les ensembles de données géologiques contiennent souvent des erreurs en raison de problèmes tels que les limitations des instruments de mesure et des pépins d’enregistrement. Dans le présent article, une méthode robuste basée sur la distance de Mahalanobis a été mise en oeuvre avec succès aux granulométries du bail minier Joslyn, un site de sables bitumineux en développement à proximité de Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. La détection automatique des valeurs aberrantes a été combinée à une étude géologique. Les valeurs aberrantes de la méthode de la distance de Manalanobis ont été comparées avec leurs photographies respectives de carottes de forage afin de déterminer si les mesures en laboratoire et la classification des faciès étaient correctes. Une procédure de vérification pour les techniciens de laboratoire est proposée."

A method was developed for testing the anchorages obtained with 3/4-inch, expansion-type, headed bolt and shell assemblies. The apparatus is a modification of that used in testing -inch-diameter, slotted-type bolts. Four makes of expansion-type shells were used in 64 tests made in sandstone and shale roof. The results show that for 3 makes of shells the anchorage effectiveness is independent of the installed land, and for the fourth make of shell a better anchorage is obtained when instilled at a load of 8,000 pounds. The results also show that deformation of the expansion plug influences the majority of the anchorages obtained with two makes of shells. This deformation causes a larger increase in displacement for a given added increment of load. The data from 48 of the 64 tests were combined to establish a relationship between average displacement and increase in bolt load (above the installed load). This relationship can be used to evaluate the anchorage effectiveness of any 3/4-inch-diameter, expansion-type, headed bolt and shell assembly tested in the field.
