Though sedimentary rocks comprise only about five percent of the volume of the continental crust, they cover about 80% of its surface, serve as important reservoirs for fluids, contain reserves of non-metallic minerals, and have in general been extensively drilled. However, most drilling has been shallow in comparison to the thickness of the crust and such deep drilling as has taken place is very strongly localized in sedimentary basins. This may be seen by reference to Figures 1 and 2 which show the location of wells that drilled deeper than 15,000' [=] 4.6 km. (Figure 1) and those that drilled below 20,000' [=] 6.15 km. (Figure 2). It is apparent that, even in regions of sedimentary cover, direct exploration below six kilometers has been very restricted. In the case of the metamorphic and igneous rocks which make up 95% of the volume of the crust, direct exploration has been much less extensive in terms of both area and depth. The present state of our knowledge of the crust below a' thin surface layer stands in marked contrast to our growing present need for raw materials and the needs of future generations. It also stands in contrast to our need for enhanced, scientific knowledge of the deeper crust, its configuration, its present state, its hydrothermal systems,-its evolution, and its materials. Lessons learned in exploring the third dimension of the sea floor, the vigorous prosecution of seismic profiling, the development of testable models for hydrothermal systems and mineral deposits, the need for better understanding of heat flow, state of stress, earthquake mechanisms, and a host of other phenomena all suggest that it is time to launch a national program for scientific exploration of the crust which uses drilling to test important hypotheses developed on the basis of indirect evidence.

In most open pit operations mining porphyry type deposits, production planning rests on an are reserve inventory block file which is derived from diamond drill hole data. With such a practice, the way by which block values are generated is critical and in the recent years many studies deal with the comparison of different estimation methods for block grades (Mueller, E. (1), Knudsen et al (2) (3), Barnes, (4), Williamson and Mueller (5). Typically in such studies, one selects a bench or a group of benches where there is a "sufficient" number of blast holes (BH) with assay values in each of the blocks (generally 30.5 x 30.5 m (100 x 100 ft) or 15.2 x15.2 m (50 x50 ft). Then the arithmetic mean of the BH values in each block is computed and it is assumed to represent the real block grade against which different estimated values are compared. However it is sometimes observed that the variation of these BH values within a block is high and that their arithmetic average may significantly differ from the real average grade of the block (Barnes (4). The problem of the precision of the mean BH grade in a block has been examined by Williamson and Langlois (6) in an experimental way. They strove to find a better estimate of the average block grade than the mean BH grade but their results were not conclusive. The purpose of this study is to investigate the same problem within the frame of geostatistical models (David (7). Besides practical results obtained with these models, two general points are emphasized and illustrated in the text. First, "good results" are obtained if "good geostatistics" is done (David et al (8).

"Sensor based automatic ore sorting technologies are used in the minerals industries to efficiently remove waste and submarginal grade material from crushed and screened run-of-mine (ROM) ore, producing a coarse (typically >10 mm) upgraded preconcentrate at an early stage in the mineral processing circuit. This avoids additional energy intensive downstream processing of this rejected component of the ROM feed, leading to lower unit operating costs and reduced tailings disposal volumes.Test work on bulk low-grade gold ore stockpile samples from Central Norseman Gold Proprietary Limited has been conducted, indicating high gold recoveries as well as high material rejection rates. A financial model, based on these results, evaluates grade sensitivity and identifies a minimum stockpile grade for adequate financial returns. The base case modelling estimates that the ex-stockpile grade (including the fines bypassed fraction) can be more than doubled through ore sorting and that the project will be highly viable with strong cash flow generation at stockpile grades as low as 0.7 g/t gold. "On April 5, 2010 a massive dust-fueled explosion at a longwall mine in southern West Virginia claimed the lives of 29 miners. The mine had experienced large gas inrushes from the floor on two known previous occasions, and natural gas was found emanating from floor fractures behind the longwall shields after the explosion, indicating a likely fuel source for the initial ignition. In succeeding months, another longwall mine operating in the same seam 15 miles away encountered smaller inflows of natural gas that halted production from two different longwall faces. Production was halted at a third longwall mine, 30 miles south of the first, in May 2011, when explosive levels of methane were detected inby the longwall face on the headgate. The same mine was evacuated on March 20, 2014 when a series of floor gas feeders were encountered on the longwall face. A literature review indicated that there has been little documentation or description of these events, and that their size and frequency are unknown. The most significant floor gas inrushes in the United States are believed to have been associated with longwall mining in the Pocahontas No. 3 Seam of western Virginia, in which an estimated 5.8 x 107 ft3 of natural gas was expended from a floor feeder on the longwall face over a two-week period (Aul, pers. comm.).A variety of mechanisms and circumstances are associated with methane emanations from underground mines. Hyman (1987) defined an outburst as a violent, simultaneous release of gas and comminuted rock material into a working face or the interior of a borehole, and indicated that certain soft or fractured coals have a propensity for outburst based on gas desorption rates. In this mechanism, reservoirs of autogenic gas hosted in pockets of soft, crushed coal surrounded by harder coal are released suddenly as confining stress is removed by mining. Hyman (1987) also suggested that highly stressed, relatively gassy coal that is penetrated by mining-induced fractures could be outburst-prone. Clayton et al. (1993) and Ulery (2008) recognized the importance of faults as potential conduits for gas from adjacent strata into coal mines, and suggested that biogenic gas trapped in adjacent strata could migrate into mined coal seams due to a pressure differential. Ulery (2008) distinguished between an outburst and a blower, the latter defined as an event expending a large amount of gas over an extended time period, most often emanating from underlying strata, but without expulsion of coal or rock. Methane feeders are further defined as a subset of blowers that continually expend gas over a long period of time but at a lower rate. Many of the mechanisms discussed by Ulery (2008) relate to geologic features that can impound gas within the seam, releasing a voluminous amount when mining breaches the elastic dike, fault gouge, or other geologic structure that had restricted and compartmentalized coalbed methane migration. Thus, the events discussed in this paper can be described as blowers and feeders. However, detailed geological observations of the three longwall mines discussed in this paper appear to indicate a mechanism that is different from those described by Hyman (1987) or Ulery (2008), in that they did not involve coalbed-sourced gas, and the reservoirs were not hosted by coal seams."

In the late 1960's concerns about the natural environment reached high levels within North America and provided activists with suitable platforms for exerting influence over the general public and politicians. In response a host of regulatory mechanisms were developed, statutes, voluntary measures, land grants, codes of practices etc. Emerging environmental awareness from the era provided impetus for rapid technological change that encompassed all industries, especially the base metal business. The resulting clean up impacted all aspects of copper production, dealing with issues such as waste disposal, water and air quality with specific impact on emissions of sulfur dioxide and particulate. This paper provides a perspective of these changes reviewing the macro-economic impact of environmental movement in mining with its specific implications to the copper smelting industry. The fundamental challenges that were faced by the old, but capital-intensive North American plants and the approaches taken to deal with the changing times are reviewed with special emphasis on the conceptual approach to smelter S02 abatement and different paths taken in the USA and Canada. The role of economics, sustainable R&D and presence of technical infrastructure that facilitated the change process is elucidated, and speculations are made about the future state of pyrometallurgy and the natural environment. A 63.5 metric tons per hour (70 TPH) demonstration coal preparation plant was constructed on the Iowa State University campus, Ames, Iowa, as a part of the Iowa Coal Project funded by the state of Iowa and administered through the Energy and Minerals Resources Re-search Institute. Processing equipment in the plant circuit includes a heavy media separator, concentration tables, separating and dewatering screens, and conveying equipment. Coal samples of size 907 metric tons (1000 tons) with sulfur contents ranging from 2.5 to 8.75% sulfur from seven mines in the state of Iowa have been pro-cessed in the plant. Sulfur reductions have averaged 35%. With ash reduction averaging 45%. Equipment for advanced fine coal beneficiation research is currently being installed in the plant to include a slurry pretreatment circuit, froth flotation, oil agglomeration, pelletization, hydrocyclones, advanced design thickener and disc filtration.

Among the many interesting problems of the pre-Cambrian of the Canadian Shield is that of the origin of certain types of gneisses which are intimately associated with the granites on the one hand and with the metamorphic rocks of known sedimentary origin on the other. The observations recorded in this paper on the structure and composition of these ancient rocks found in a small part of northern Quebec may help to lead to a clearer understanding of the way in which they were formed and also constitute a contribution to the regional geology and petrography of a district for which little detailed information is available. The area considered is located near the Ashuapmuchuan, or Chamuchuan, river about 180 miles north-northwest of the city of Quebec, and therefore well within the Canadian Shield. Although most attention was devoted to the rocks along this river from the 57th to the 70th mile above its entrance into Lake St. John, a few observations on other localities to the north and northwest of that lake will be included. The field work was done in the summer of 1924 in cooperation with L. W. MacNaughton, E. S. Roberts, and B. M. Shaub, all of Cornell University. The party ascended the Ashuapmuchuan river by canoe and spent about a month near the mouth of Stacker, or Brochet, river, the outlet of the lake of the same name, returning by way of Mikoasas river. The writer wishes to express his obligation to his associates for their co-operation in the field and for their permission to publish the results. He is especially indebted to B. M. Many non-commercial operators are currently faced with the need to operate fleets of legacy gas turbine engines. How long such engines can be kept in service safely, without replacing a significant portion of their aging structural components, has become a growing concern to engine life-cycle managers, due to uncertainties in the remaining lives of critical components of these engines. This paper describes the application of the damage tolerance methodology to predict safe inspection intervals (SII) for critical components of gas turbine engines, using components of a turboprop engine for a transport aircraft as examples. High temperature components of this engine are made of advanced aerospace alloys. The methods of predicting three-dimensional fatigue crack growth at the critical location of turbine discs and spacers using both commercial and in-house developed algorithms are presented. Sensitivity analyses are performed to determine the effect of variations in material parameters on the predicted safe inspection intervals. In addition, spin rig tests performed for both turbine discs and spacers are described. Finally, crack growth rates predicted by numerical analyses are compared to those obtained from spin rig testing and the damage tolerance of the turbine components is assessed.

The relationship of various genetic classifications of graphite, their properties and general applications are reviewed. The classifications being amorphous, flake, high crystalline (vein) primary synthetic graphite and secondary graphite. The properties discussed are size, carbon, sulfur, ash content, general chemical analysis and degree of graphitization of each type. The major sources for natural and synthetic graphite powders are discussed in addition to factors which govern the cost as well as the supply. The economics of graphite are basically determined by the consumer and the end application. Graphite is a strategic mineral and is on the government stockpile list.

The authors have developed a com¬puter-assisted critical path planning and scheduling model to help reduce time required to move longwall mining units. The model includes time constraints and limited resource constraints, such as manpower, machinery, supplies, work space, and transportation routes. Outstanding results were achieved on the first move to which the computer-model pas applied; e.g., downtime due to the move was cut by 50%. The model and the schedules developed using it provide an excellent blueprint for future moves and have led to significant savings in time and costs for Emery Mining Corporation, Huntington, Utah.

In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a method for the computer solution of the equilibrium compositions of any complex, multiphase, chemical system for which appropriate thermodynamic data are available. The method describes in detail the computation of systems in which solid or liquid species can form by heterogeneous chemical reactions where these species do not occur in any equilibrium equations. Also described are the calculation of phases formed by condensation (pure or solutions) and the inclusion of other system restrictions such as electroneutrality. The method is being used to compute the equilibrium composition of mixtures of an electrically conductive plasma and a liquid slag phase arising from the high-temperature combustion of coal for magnetohydrodynamic power generation. These mixtures can contain up to 65 species including gases, liquids, free electrons, and ions.

This paper presents an application of the newly developed risk-cost-benefit (RCB) framework to support risk management decisions for the selection of wall monitoring technologies at an open cut mine site. The RCB framework quantitatively assessed the risk of unstable slope-induced wall failure and its impact on both loss of life and coal recovery. The RCB framework was utilised in the selection of an optimum group of risk-controls to effectively manage the risk of wall failure to ensure safety and optimal production occurred. The RCB framework incorporates mathematical modules that integrated RCB calculations and risk-control effectiveness assessments to determine the risk reduction and financial impact of the examined safety initiatives.This paper provides an overview of the five-staged RCB framework, incorporating the RCB decision support tools, RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its application to slope stability risk management at the case study site. The RCB charts are designed to display a balance between risk, cost and benefit for easy interpretation by decision makers to support the objective selection of an optimum suite of risk-controls. The RCB analysis revealed that a combination of ævisual inspections, automatic extensometers and radarÆ for fast- and slow-wall failures with structure were sufficient to reduce the probability of loss of life (PLoL) to the æModerateÆ zone as defined by the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS, 2007) for the case study site. The new framework presented in this paper provides a method to effectively determine the suitability of risk-controls and supports industry efforts to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).CITATION:Kizil, G V, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. The design and optimisation of mineral flotation circuits is currently performed using a combination of laboratory, pilot plant and full scale testing. Owing to the variable nature of flotation circuits and the complex nature of the flotation process, it is difficult to interpret the data collected from flotation testwork. JKSimFloat is a computer modelling package which is being developed to interpret flotation testwork data collected at the various stages of the mining cycle. The parameters derived from the program can be used to assess potential circuit configurations in both the design of new flotation circuits and in the refinement of existing operations. The aim of this paper is to outline the modelling methodology used in JKSimFloat and to outline how it can be used effectively to model data collected from either the laboratory, the pilot plant or the existing flotation circuit. The use of flotation model parameters in circuit evaluation will be demonstrated via the use of a case study based on data collected from ComincoÆs Red Dog lead flotation circuit.

In 2006 Arch Materials initiated the development of an underground limestone mining complex. The decision to proceed with the project was the end result of several years of market research and geological reconnaissance. The scope of the project included the construction of two declines to the mining horizons located approximately 900 feet below the surface, the means and methods of this phase will be the primary focus of this discussion. The design, fabrication and erection of a state of the art crushing and screening processing plant which when completed will have the primary crushing located on the mine level allowing uniformly sized material to be brought to the surface by means of a highly efficient conveyor system and a surface portion of the plant where material would be additionally processed, screened and stockpiled into specific product types. Also included in the scope of the project is the construction of offices, warehouse and shop facilities necessary to support the operations, commercial sales and distribution of the finished products.

The world's biomass with its species-specific ability to concentrate metallic elements must provide one of the dominant concentration and transport systems for such elements. Given that about thirty elements are now considered bio-essential, for all these biomass may control their environmental behavior. Life appears to be present in almost all places where liquid water is present at temperatures near 100°C or below. In the surface environment a very large array of simple minerals are produced in living cells and such processes can lead to economic concentrations. Because of the specific nature of bioconcentration of elements, in all environments where biomaterials accumulate, interesting metal concentrations may occur or the molecular fragments from bio-degradation may allow specific metal transport and concentration. The scale of biological-inorganic interactions on our planetary surface is still inadequately appreciated.

In 1971, during the planning and design stages of a $300 million expansion, the Iron Ore Company of Canada Ltd. through its Engineers, Canadian Bechtel Ltd., came out with a preliminary request for two (2) 10,000 LTPH belt conveyor scale systems. These Systems were to provide weighing accuracies within 2.5% of the iron ore pellets and concentrates in transit on two (2) 72" wide conveyors from the stockpiles to the ships. Each conveyor system would be fed by a rail mounted bucket wheel reclaimer, with the conveyed material moving directly to the ship loaders with no inter- mediate surge and/or storage bins between the stockpiles and the ships. The bucket wheel reclaimer discharge rates would vary from 0-9600 LTPH in cyclic periods, with the periods varying from 1-5 minutes - dependent on the level of the reclaim buckets in relation to the stockpile as well as the slewing rate of the reclaimer. There would be frequent interruptions for bucket wheel repositioning (laterally and vertically), changing ship holds, and trimming ship holds. These frequent zero flow conditions, approximately 500 per 150,000 ton ship, could last 1-5 minutes. In addition, the conveyors on which the scales were to be mounted would be over the water and subject to the wind and cold of Northern Quebec. These Systems would be in use 350 working days of the year and would load 30,000,000 LT/yr. (An average of 90,000/working day).

Fluorescence is of growing interest to the mineral industry because certain minerals may be detected thereby and because, as shown in figure 1,4/ many minerals (natural or synthetic) are needed in tubes and lamps. The use of fluorescent lighting is expanding, and large numbers of lamps of many sizes and shapes are being made and used in works, factories, stores, offices, homes, and in photography. Fluorescent tubes, as distinguished from clear tubes filled with neon, argon, or other rare gases through which a current of electricity passes, fluoresce owing to specially, selected and prepared minerals placed in the tubes. Luminous chemicals and paints also contain special minerals and are used in similar applications; therefore, these also will be considered in this report. Although the quantity of minerals (in tons) that are used for fluorescent purposes is small, and probably will continue to be so, this use is significant because it exemplifies a requirement for "pure" minerals in which a trace of contaminant as" minute" as one part in ten million may distinguish between the acceptance or rejection of a particular material. This extreme purity makes synthetic minerals almost essential, and natural mineral's are now little used.

This paper will deal with on-site maintenance welding using the stick electrode, electric arc process. It is primarily concerned with the underlying principles, the application of which, or the lack of such application, governs the success or failure of the operation. It will discuss first the base metal or item to be welded, including the field identification of its weld-ability and the determination of the procedures to be followed. Second, it will outline heat effects and the interrelation between heat applied as part of a welding operation and heat deliberately applied as part of a heat treating cycle, stressing the fact that in welding the same basic principles are effective. The third consideration will be weld metal and its control of both composition and properties. Last, but not least, distortion, shrinkage and residual stress will be considered and practical means for minimizing their adverse effects outlined.

Statistical studies at Cyprus Pima Mine indicate that samples from 22 blastholes are necessary for determining average copper grades, within a desired range of precision, for mine-model blocks by arithmetic averaging. The average number of holes in such blocks is 14. Many considerations show that more holes will not be drilled for sampling. A way to determine block grades more reliably than by" arithmetic averaging was sought. Thus far arithmetic averaging has proven to be the best procedure for the particular operation characteristics despite the small number of samples. It naturally follows that expenditure of great effort in sampling blasthole cuttings is unwise.
