At the Groveland mine iron ore is mined by open-pit methods and concentrated by means of spirals and flotation. A brief history of the mine and its early development is given. The ore deposit is described, with emphasis on those physical characteristics that affect the choice of mining and milling methods. Development and mining, which include breaking ground, loading, transportation, engineering, and operating control, are explained, and the milling method is described Mining and milling costs are given in percent of total cost.

In being asked to present this paper on the improvements in loading and hauling equipment and the effect on unit costs, Mr. Van De Water, your program chairman, stated that his reason for coming to a contractor was due to the wide experience of, and I quote: "a large contracting firm using a variety of equipment on varying types of earth moving jobs." We people in Utah Construction Company are flattered that Mr. Van De Water singled out our Company for this assignment. Utah Construction Company's participation in open pit mine stripping antedates the 1920's, when overburden was being removed from copper ore in Bingham Canyon, Utah. Our first stripping con¬tract for the Copper Company was finished in 1912. Since that early beginning, Utah has, as a contractor, been engaged to strip and mine iron ore properties, coal properties, copper properties, uranium properties, phosphate,-gypsum, limestone and dolomite properties. And, as you know, the Company has become a major producer of iron ore from Company-owned open pit mines. Utah Construction Company has been instrumental in the evolution of open pit mining tools. Some of the first tools were the old wood and coal fired stream shovels which had to be fired hours before a shift started to insure a full head of steam, providing power to excavate with the then large 1-1/2 cubic yard buckets. Today, Utah's strip mining is done, with 18 cubic yard and 10 cubic yard crawler shovels. Yesterday's horse and mule drawn, iron wheeled wagons, with 1 and 2 cubic yard capacity, which were hand dumped by removing the false bottom, one 2 x 4 at a time, have been replaced by today's- 50-ton capacity, hydraulic, rear dump trucks and giant 40-ton coal haulers. Utah Construction Company used the early fresnes and wheeled scrapers which were horse and mule drawn. Often, an operator holding too tightly to a handle was thrown into his horses when a hard spot turned the scraper, a contrast with today's 20 and 25 cubic yard, self-powered diesel and diesel electric Gargantuan rigs; with power controls that relieve the operator of practically all physical work. This Company has pioneered many of today's advances in equipment with shop made prototypes, features of which were adopted and elaborated upon by equipment manufacturers.

The Morobe Province of central Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been mined for gold for nearly a century, although it is only in the past decade that large-scale modern mining commenced. The Hidden Valley gold-silver project began construction in mid-2006 and production by August 2009, and is located in the mountains above Wau in the headwaters of the Watut River. The mine is owned and operated by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which also owns the Wafi-Golpu project, comprising the Wafi gold deposit and Golpu copper-gold deposit, situated in the Watut River Valley. Together they represent a potential mine of the scale of Ok Tedi or Bougainville or bigger. The MMJV is owned in equal shares by Newcrest Mining from Australia and Harmony Gold from South Africa. Although Hidden Valley was the first large-scale mine in PNG to engineer and build a tailings storage facility, poor environmental management during construction and early operations led to significant erosion of waste rock and sedimentation impacts throughout the ~200 km length of the Watut River. Since then, substantial efforts have been made to improve environmental management, especially waste rock placement and storage and water quality management. While the impacts from the Hidden Valley project appear to be reducing, the saga has heightened concerns by many along the Watut River and across PNG about ongoing impacts from mining.This paper presents the results of an ongoing project in the Morobe Province conducted by the Mineral Policy Institute examining the historical, current and future impacts of mining, including community views, social and environmental impacts and the monitoring and regulation of mining. Overall, there is a clear need to more fully integrate social and environmental issues into life-of-mine planning and go above and beyond regulatory requirements. In this way, some of the lessons learnt – by the community, MMJV and government – can be incorporated before, during and long after mining.CITATION:Mudd, G M and Roche, C, ?2014. Intelligent manufacturing involves intelligent, product-directed systems that facilitate the on-line, real-time generation of an improving product process cycle. A first step in the journey relates to self-directed systems which have the ability to reason and create their own processing paths in response to varying product and process conditions encountered during the process. This paper discusses an application of self-directed process control in the manufacture of graphite-epoxy laminated composites. An Air Force team involving researchers and production personnel have caused the development of a system now in use at the Air Force Logistic Center at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento CA. The paper discusses results and lessons learned in the process of trying to speed the implementation of research efforts which show significant potential of improving the product quality in less time and at less cost

"A 10-cm thick clay-rich layer near the top of the Manitou Falls Formation of the Athabasca Group is unusual in its breccia texture, alteration, and detrital mineral composition relative to the adjacent overlying and underlying sedimentary beds. This layer is composed of angular quartz grains set in an illite >> kaolinite + dickite matrix. Deformed clay-rich fragments within the layer have very similar mineral assemblages. The presence of euhedral accessory minerals including Ti-oxides and aluminophosphatesulphate minerals points to a diagenetic/hydrothermal origin. The presence of individual grains of Kfeldspar and amphibole is unusual relative to the typical Athabasca quartz arenite; originally, these minerals were probably included in detrital quartz and subsequently liberated during fracturing. The textures and alteration characteristics suggest that this layer is a hydraulically-fractured unit, which has experienced hydrothermal fluid alteration - a possible pathway distally related to uranium mineralization Une couche argileuse de 10 cm d’epaisseur pres du sommet de la Formation de Manitou Falls du Groupe d'Athabasca est remarquable par sa texture brechique, son alteration et la composition de ses mineraux detritiques qui different de ceux des couches sedimentaires sus- et sous-jacente. Cette couche est composee de grains de quartz angulaires dans une matrice composee d’illite >> kaolinite + dickite. Des fragments deformes riches en argile dans cette couche presentent des assemblages mineraux tres similaires. La presence de mineraux accessoires idiomorphes dont des oxydes de titane et des aluminophosphates-sulphates suggere que ces derniers ont une origine diagenetique / hydrothermale. La presence de grains de feldspath-K et d'amphibole est inhabituelle comparativement aux arenites quartziques typiques de l’Athabasca; initialement, ces mineraux constituaient probablement des inclusions dans le quartz detritique qui ont ete subsequemment liberees pendant la fracturation. Les textures et les caracteristiques de l'alteration suggerent que cette unite a subi une fracturation hydraulique et a ete alteree par un fluide hydrothermal - possiblement en lien avec les effets distaux de mise en place de la mineralisation en l'uranium."

The Gilman district is on the northeast flank of the Sawatch Range in central Colorado. It has yielded a total of 10,000,000 tons of ore having a value of over $250,000,000. Paleozoic sediments intruded by a Tertiary quartz latite sill and unconformably overlying Precambrian intrusives and metasediments comprise the country rock of the area. The sediments strike northwesterly and dip 8° to 12° northeasterly. Structures in the Precambrian are related to the Homestake shear zone of the Colorado mineral belt. Only minor folding and faulting occur in the sediments. The principal ore bodies are massive sulfide replacement deposits in carbonate rocks. They consist of long, pipe-like mantos in the completely dolomitized Mississippian Leadville Limestone and funnel-shaped chimneys of copper- silver ore cutting across the Mississippian and Devonian strata. Mineralization is continuous from the chimneys into the mantos. The principal ore bodies are roughly in the shape of a four-tined fork which points up dip. Smaller manto deposits occur in the Cambrian Sawatch Quartzite, and fissure veins are present in the Precambrian rocks. The principal minerals in the mantos are marmatite and galena in a gangue of pyrite and manganosiderite. The chimneys consist of a central core of pyrite with erratically distributed chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, freibergite, and occasional galena with a shell of zinc ore on the outer margin. Both the chimneys and the mantos are surrounded by imperfect shells of manganosiderite and sanded dolomite. The mineralization is of Laramide age. Hydrothermal alteration affects all rock units to varying degrees. Clay mineral alteration halos occur around the ore bodies. Hydrothermal solutions have developed sanded rock, rubble filled channels, and banded zebra textures, principally in the Leadville Limestone. Structural control of the ore bodies is not well defined. Both the location of the district and the chimneys are probably related to basement structures. The mantos are largely controlled by stratigraphic factors and a pre-Pennsylvanian karst topography in the Leadville Limestone, which were modified by hydrothermal activity, and by weak zones of northeasterly trending faults.

Within recent years several mining companies have sent expeditions co the east end of Great Slave lake co determine the mineral possibilities of that area. Little was known of the geography of the region, and even less of the geology; and, not until Blancher's survey was made and the results published, was an accurate map of the lake available. Early explorers followed the Inconnu channel and the north shore of McLeod bay to Port Reliance, and, just prior to Blancher's survey, Hornby showed that the southern passage was feasible. Apparently, but few geologists have ? travelled through the country, for geological information is meager. In 1900, Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey, made a trip to Fort Reliance by way of the north shore of McLeod bay, and he gives a brief description of the geology. The present paper is the result of an expedition into this little-known region by Mr. Geo. M. Douglas and the writer in the summer of 1928. The south shore of Great Slave lake was followed to the east end of Tochatwi bay, and an extensive exploration was made of Kahochella and Pethei peninsulas. The prime object of the expedition was co determine the presence or absence of the copper-bearing Keweenawan basalts.

FREDERICK WORTHEN BRADLEY, the newly elected president of the Institute, may be said to be the prototype of the men who have built up the great mining industry of the West. He was born in Nevada County, Cal., on Feb. 21, 1863, and studied mining at the University of California from 1882 to 1884, as a member of the Class of 1885. He was in contact with the mining industry from his earliest years and in his reminiscences which we published last month, he told of meeting Thomas Mein and H. C. Perkins in 1877. Beginning as assayer and roustabout at the Eagle Bird mine, in Nevada county, Mr. Bradley was a deputy mineral surveyor in 1886 and 1887 and superintendent of the Spanish mine from 1885 to 1890. There he made a record of mining gold ore at 65 cents per ton that was not only astounding in that day when modern large scale mining had not yet been developed but is still a mark to shoot at. As a result he was called in 1890 to be assistant manager of the Bunker Hill and Sullivan and was made manager in 1893. In 1897, he was elected to the presidency of the company, a position he still holds. H. C. Perkins and D. O. Mills, the largest stockholders in the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Co. took over the Tacoma smelter in 1898, feeding it with concentrate from the Coeur d'Alene and Douglas Island mines but also doing a gen-era1 smelting business. Mr. Bradley was put in as president of the Smelting company, and held that position until the plant was sold to the American Smelting Securities Co. in 1905.

"Rejection of pyrrhotite from pentlandite is of critical importance to the economics of nickel concentrate production and the main goal of the Strathcona milling operations. A joint team of XPS, Glencore Technology and Strathcona Mill personnel executed a comprehensive program of work to develop and implement strategies for increased Po rejection with focus on challenging ores containing high feed Po/Pn ratios (> 7) and significant hexagonal Po content (> 40% of total Po). This paper describes the team results including minerology, bench-scale flotation tests, and plant validation tests and modeling that have defined the path forward to improving the metallurgical performance and economics of the mill operation. Techniques to quantify hexagonal and monoclinic pyrrhotites were developed at XPS to assess the differences in their metallurgical behavior since their flotation responses are quite different. Mineralogical tools including QEMScan were extensively used to determine mineral liberation, associations, optimum grind size, and nickel deportment into pentlandite, pyrrhotite and non-sulphide gangue. Several reagents/strategies were evaluated during bench-scale flotation testing to significantly increase Po rejection. A significant shift in the Po-Pn selectivity and grade recovery curves was achieved using several strategies including the use of DETA and sodium metabisulfite, and regrind of the rougher concentrate and rougher cleaner/rougher tails.INTRODUCTION The Strathcona Mill is owned and operated by Glencore Nickel – Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations and has been processing Ni-Cu ores from the Sudbury Basin since 1968 (valuable sulphides: pentlandite (Pn) – (Ni,Fe)9S8 and chalcopyrite (Cp) – CuFeS2). Currently Strathcona Mill receives ore mined from two main sources in the Sudbury area and produces two concentrate streams – a nickel-copper concentrate that is shipped to the Sudbury Smelter and a copper concentrate that is sent to the Fonderie Horne (Glencore Copper, Rouyn-Noranda). The general flowsheet currently used at Strathcona is displayed in Figure 1. It is highlighted by separate feed circuits for regular grade Ni ores and high grade copper ores. The copper circuit has a preflotation stage prior to a rougher-scavenger stage, a copper-nickel separation circuit, and a pyrrhotite (Po) rejection circuit."

Mineral discoveries and subsequent extraction have led to the establishment of many small communities, some major towns and a few cities . In Canada, such developments have essentially occurred without benefit of long-range regional or local planning. In the past, this was not a cause for concern. Now, however, rising expectations and reorientation of social values have placed increasing responsibility on government and industry to ensure the long-term viability of communities and regions. Such responsibility means large investments by government in infrastructure and by industry in extractive and processing plants. Uncertainty in the interpretation of ore reserve estimates becomes a critical factor. The traditional methods of reporting reserves - "proven", "probable" , "possible" - may be useful in individual mine production planning, but they are inadequate for planning industrial and public infrastructure, The need for a better information base is critical, with clear and precise definitions of what is being reported, but we are a long way from achieving it. The challenge is therefore to develop a closer professional relationship between government and industry and to tie mineral development to long-range regional strategies.

"Five main lignite seams occur in the Tertiary Ravenscrag Formation in the Eastevan area, at depths of 100 feet or less. They are named, in ascending order: the Boundary, Estevan, Souris, Roche Percee and Short Creek seams. A total sequence of approximately 250 feet is represented by the coal beds and interstratified clays, silts and sands. Strata dip to the southeast at 25 feet per mile or less and trike northeast. Large areas underlain by coal seams at shallow depths are delineated. Reserve calculations are dependent on detailed information on seam thicknesses and feasible stripmining depths. The stratigraphically higher seams are thinner on the average than lower seams and this, together with the increase in elastic size fractions in higher strata, suggests a retreat of a Tertiary marine margin to the south during the closing depositional history of coal seams and associated strata."

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two' copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32'1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.

Publication of the Bureau of Mines annual surveys of the capacity of petroleum refineries in the United States was suspended after the entry of the United States into World War II . The last published survey was that of January 1 , 1941 , released in April 1941 as Information Circular 7161 . The purpose of this publication is to provide comparable information with respect to crude - oil and cracking capacity on January 1 , 1947. No attempt is made at this time to bridge the gap in annual statistical series from the date of the last published survey to the present one . However , complete summary tables will be included in the succeeding survey for January 1 , 1948 .

The lack of commitment is due to several reasons: variable mineral processes and technologies, market fluctuations, and excessive costs and inadequacies of applicable products supplied by computer vendors.

At a time of great antiquity when our Yomato tribe had not yet found its way throughout the country, there lived in Japan barbarous tribes of the stone age, whose dwellings were vertical caves covered with roof's of twigs and weeds. In a cave lately discovered at the village of Morita, 10 miles west from the port of Aomori, there were found pieces of micaceous iron-ore and psilomelane, with oval holes pierced from both sides. Apparently these objects were regarded as ornaments or curios, without being applied to any practical use. Among the traditions given in the Nihonshoki, an ancient history of Japan, there is one relating to the mining industry. According to this tradition, in the mythological age Izanami-no-Mikoto gave birth to Kanayamahiko-no-Mikoto, god of mines, and Amaterasu-Okami (the sun-goddess) was armed with swords. It came to pass at one time that she concealed herself in Ama-no-Iwato ("Heavenly Cave"), and several gods made contrivances to entice her out. Among them, Ishikori-dome, a smith, made a mirror with copper obtained from the Ama-no-Kagoyama, by means of a pair of bellows known as the Ama-no-habuki, which was made of a deer-skin. It is recorded also that Susanb-no-Mikoto, her younger brother, observed the abundance of gold and silver in Korea, where his descendants were to reign, and urged them to provide themselves with boats to convey them across the Sea of Japan. Water is a strategic resource for the mining industry. The rising cost has forced the industry to become more efficient in their use, reduce and recycle waste as much as possible. The importance of having a reliable water balance is increasingly urgent, because the resource is scarce and vital to the sustainability of human life, animal and ecosystem. Conventional flowmeters can suffer disruptions or failures by corrosion, fouling, presence of elements in the water as acids, salts and suspended solids. Use of radiotracers is advantageous to determine fluid velocities that are transported through pipes, as they are detectable by means of the radiation emitted, the same way for surface flows, such as natural watercourses and drainage from tailings dams, fluorescent tracers are those with the best advantages. For velocity measurements in pipelines a Iodine-131 tracer solution, around 5 mCi was injected into the suction of the pumps. The technique used is the transit time between detectors at known distances and determining the time of passage of the radiotracer. For measurements of surface fluxes using the fluorescent tracer Rhodamine WT by tracer dilution technique, injecting the tracer at a constant rate and measuring it known concentration diluted downstream. This work has been performed in Minera Los Pelambres, located in the IV Region of Chile, measuring the flow rate pumped from 12 pools with 1-7 pumps operating, obtaining speeds of 0.56 to 2.62 m/s. In pumping wells three facilities have been measured at speeds of 0.111-0.223 m/s, plus six surface flows with flow rates of 8.45 to 357.2 L/s.

The efficient operation of an open pit mine presupposes that the slopes are maintained at an angle which closely approaches that of the ultimate stability of the slope. In order to do this in a safe manner, it is essential that the data relating to the behavior of the slopes be monitored and made available, through an instrumentation system, to the appropriate personnel so that soundly-based engineering decisions may be reached with the minimum of wasted effort. In addition to simply detecting potential failures, the system should also define what type of failure is developing; i.e., rotational, wedge, or dilational failures. Providing this data is the prime function of a stability monitoring system. Therefore, in an operating open pit mine, the instrumentation system must provide information which will have a direct bearing upon both the safety and the economics of the operation, as well as provide data which is pertinent to initial design, or to the re-design of slopes where developing instability is found to be a problem.6 It is possible to excavate pit slopes which will remain stable under extremely adverse conditions; however, such slopes would usually be so flat that they would tend to render the operation of a pit uneconomical which might otherwise be mined at a profit. On this basis, all practical pit slopes must be considered to be, to some ex- tent, unstable; if they are not, the design is too conservative and the mine is not returning its maximum profit. To reduce the problem to its fundamentals, one can simply state that the ideal pit slope design produces a slope which stands with zero maintenance for the entire life of the pit and then collapses into the final excavation as soon as the personnel and equipment have been removed. Such a design is impossible to achieve, but the fact remains that an efficient slope would hover on the edge of failure for the life of I the pit. As one retreats from this position, the profitability of the mine decreases because of an unduly conservative design.

"Sensor based automatic ore sorting technologies are used in the minerals industries to efficiently remove waste and submarginal grade material from crushed and screened run-of-mine (ROM) ore, producing a coarse (typically >10 mm) upgraded preconcentrate at an early stage in the mineral processing circuit. This avoids additional energy intensive downstream processing of this rejected component of the ROM feed, leading to lower unit operating costs and reduced tailings disposal volumes.Test work on bulk low-grade gold ore stockpile samples from Central Norseman Gold Proprietary Limited has been conducted, indicating high gold recoveries as well as high material rejection rates. A financial model, based on these results, evaluates grade sensitivity and identifies a minimum stockpile grade for adequate financial returns. The base case modelling estimates that the ex-stockpile grade (including the fines bypassed fraction) can be more than doubled through ore sorting and that the project will be highly viable with strong cash flow generation at stockpile grades as low as 0.7 g/t gold. The modelling will enable the company to benchmark ore sorting options against stockpile reclaim and screening operations currently employed. Citation:Parry, A N and van Wyk, G, 2016.
