[The utilization of Western coals and lignite is a continuing study of the Bureau of Mines, and storage of these fuels is of paramount importance. Since the seasonal demand for coal in the Western States triples between the summer and winter months, successful storage of these low-rank fuels would tend to level out this variation and should reduce fuel costs. The time is rapidly approaching when the West Coast States, particularly California, will annually import several million tons of coal from the Rocky Mountain States for additional power production. This will necessitate storage of large quantities of coal, and it is thefore important to develop experience in such storage. Dry surface storage, by virtue of its flexibility and low cost, is particularly adapted to the stockpiling of large quantities of coal. This report will, therefore be primarily concerned with such storage. Inasmuch as the problems of dry, open-pit storage are quite similar to those of surface stockpiling, experiences in pit storage will be discussed briefly. Although spontaneous combustion is a hazard in storing coal, experience has proved that heats can be avoided by proper stockpiling procedures. The purpose of this report is to show that the most reactive coals can be stored satisfactorily on the surface by avoiding segregation and by thorough compaction.]

A process has been developed for increasing the grade of chalcopyrite concentrates from about 25 percent copper to about 60 percent copper. The concentrates are treated with two steps of autoclaving and then by flotation. Because of the lower associated weight, copper in the concentrates could be shipped and smelted at less cost than untreated concentrates. Use of the process can also increase overall yield from an orebody if a lower grade concentrate is sent to enrichment than would be sent to a smelter. Potential applications of the process would be for treating concentrates that must be transported a long distance for smelting or for treating concentrates so as to increase the capacity of a smelter.

The basic principle is unchanged, but the technique has been revolutionized, particularly in the past fifteen years. The cost of core drilling has not kept pace with the rising cost of living. The price of machinery, supplies and labour in drilling has doubled and trebled since 1946. Some of the techniques which have made it possible to hold the price line are described."

Geostatistics is well known as a tool for ore reserves calculations at the exploration stage. The goal of this paper is to show geoscatistics can also contribute to productivity gains, allow better selection of the mining methods and better control of the grades during production. The first two examples show how geostatistics can provide sophisticated models, using conditional simulations and the use of them for simulations or optimizations of mining processes. A third example will show how to use geostatistics for short term planning in a large polymetallic vein type mine.

"Rock bursts remain an important problem in longwall coal mining. These bursts are due to a sudden and severe failure of rocks from a high stress concentration in deep underground excavations that occur with the instantaneous release of strain energy stored in the rocks. They can potentially cause irrecoverable damage to equipment and personnel, thus accurate rock burst prediction and control is expected to be carried out by the mine design engineer. As a result, this can constitute major challenges for said engineer. In this paper, forensic engineering has been used to evaluate the possibility and extent of rock bursts in deep coal mining. For this purpose, established mining engineering principles, including factors influencing the severity of rock bursts, have been incorporated in the forensic engineering technique. The analyses took place in five steps:• Assessment of regional and local conditions prior to the event• Assessment of conditions after the event• Hypothesize plausible ways in which pre-event conditions can become post-event ones• Search for evidence that either denies or supports various hypotheses• Apply engineering knowledge to relate the various facts and evidence into a cohesive scenario of how the event may have occurred.The paper concludes by demonstrating a method for predicting rock bursts and preventing their reoccurrence. The methodology used in this paper, together with the results obtained, can serve as useful tools for the coal mine design engineer in the primary evaluation of rock burst potential in underground coal mines.INTRODUCTIONA rock burst is defined as the sudden and great failure of rocks due to a high stress concentration in deep underground mines. This phenomenon occurs with the instantaneous release of strain energy that is stored in the rocks, and can cause irrecoverable damages to both equipment and personnel (see Figure 1). Rock bursts pose a hazard owing to their lake of predictability; in fact, research into understanding rock burst mechanics and implementing techniques for their monitoring and prediction has been taking place for over 50 years."

Simulation can play an important role in the design, optimization and control of complete industrial processes, the most appropriate method depending on the particular application. Most commonly, process models or simulators are means of representing the process which are either purely mathematical or physical. Mathematical models, however, almost invariably need to be based to some extent on experimental data or require experimental verification before they can be used with confidence. Ways in which experimental and mathematical modelling techniques can be combined to best effect are discussed, with reference to the simulation of iron ore induration and direct reduction processes. A novel method is presented for the simulation of direct reduction shaft furnaces. Small scale apparatus has been developed in which ore or pellet samples are subjected to the changing environment of the industrial process. The time dependent conditions (solid temperature and gas compositions) are provided by a mathematical representation of heat transfer and the conservation of mass and energy in the process Simulated.

The electrolytic zinc plant of the Sullivan Mining Co. is in Government Gulch, at Silver King, Shoshone County, Idaho, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, about one mile from the Bunker Hill smelter and about three miles from Kellogg. The Sullivan Mining Co., which owns both the zinc plant and the Star mine, is itself owned jointly by the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co, and the Hecla Mining Company. The Tainton high-density, high-acid process is used at this plant, therefore some parts of its flowsheet differ markedly from those of electrolytic plants using the low-density process. While it is a custom plant and has treated a variety of zinc concentrates originating from various sources in a number of states, it has obtained its main supply of zinc concentrates chiefly from the zinc-bearing ores of the Coeur d'A1ene mining district, of which the principal important sources have been the Bunker Hill and Star mines. Thus the main feed has been zinc concentrates obtained from complex lead-zinc-silver ores. For the year of 1935 the concentrates had the following composition: water, 9.5 per cent; Zn, 50.6; Pb, 3.3; Fe, 9.4; S, 31.0; Cu, 0.2; insoluble, 2.9. Flowsheet The concentrates are delivered to the plant in railroad cars, which discharge into storage bins directly under the track. Bottom-dump cars are dropped directly into the bins while a slip scraper, pulled by an air tugger hoist, is used to empty box cars. There are five storage bins for concentrates, each of approximately 300 tons capacity. At the bottom of each bin there are individual belt feeders that discharge onto a common conveyor belt, which in turn discharges to another belt that carries the concentrate onto a weightometer belt for weighing. Immediately after the weighing, the crushed oversize return from the roasters is added to the load on the belt and then the ground-up sweepings, lumps and roaster cleanings. An electromagnet at the end of this conveyor removes tramp iron from the feed. COAL occupied a large place in the technical sessions of the Institute at its annual meeting for in addition to three sessions specifically de- voted to coal the two sessions on mine ventilation and the two on ground movement and subsidence, which are reported under their own headings, were primarily concerned with coal. The first session on coal was a joint one with the Iron and Steel Division, on Wednesday afternoon, with F. H. Crockard and J. R. Campbell presiding as joint chairmen and the latter actually officiating. The principal topic of discussion was G. S. Scott's paper "Evaluation of Coal for the Making of Blast- Furnace Coke," which has been published as T. P. 159. The author made a brief statement of its con- tents to start the discussion and the chairman, after briefly reviewing it himself, called on C. A. Meissner to start the discussion. He briefly reviewed the economic factors in the use of coal for coke-making, saying that not only .does the removal of 1 per cent of ash from the coal reduce the cost of pig iron 12 or 13c. per ton, but it also permits coke of satisfactory structures to be made from a coal which otherwise could not be used. He stressed the importance of uniformity in blast-furnace fuel and discussed the benefit of mixing different coals as raw material for the coke oven and cited experience with Illinois coals.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada treats up to 125,000 t/d of iron ore at its Carol Concentrator in Labrador City, NF.A complete water balance study in the concentrator was done to show how to reduce the consumption of fresh water, to improve metallurgy in the magnetic separation (mag) plant, and to help reduce maintenance costs for the reclaim water and tailing pumping systems.The study showed that more than 60% of the water used in the mill was internally recycled dirty water from dewatering cyclone overflows, and that water reduction was closely tied to the effective use of these internal reclaim pumping systems. In addition, new operating parameters were set for the 4 -15,000 USGPM reclaim water pumps which should save over $100,000 per year in maintenance costs.IntroductionThe study described in this paper was set up for the purpose of lowering water usage in the concentrator, and to reduce tailing and process water pumping costs (operating and maintenance). Another benefit was also expected, namely, to improve magnetic separation efficiency through better water and density management of magnetic separator feed streams.The procedures selected to perform this work were: ( 1) to prepare accurate, as built flowsheets of the entire iron recovery process, including fresh and process water systems, (2) to calculate normal material balances in all circuits at full production, (3) to use the computer spreadsheet model so generated, to evaluate specific ways to reduce water consumption and (4) to re-evaluate metallurgical performance and operating parameters in the light of this information.Overall control of the 28 spiral iron recovery lines was found to be excellent because automated start up and shut down of the individual lines had been incorporated in the design from the start. Because production rates can vary due to sales requirements, mine and mill maintenance delays and hardness variance, the mag plant (which treats spiral tailings) must deal with a wide variety of operating conditions. Good water management therefore is a key item in achieving high recovery of the fine free magnetite which is too fine for recovery in the spirals.In order to make the study as accurate as possible, process data for major flows was reviewed by metallurgical staff and then by mill supervisors. The operating picture of the concentrator so generated was judged to be a good estimate of the mill at full production. By changing key inputs, the variance of process water demand and tailing slurry produced for several other operating conditions were studied.The usefulness of this exercise has prompted this present presentation to be made. Older plants by nature have undergone many revisions as operators have worked through ore changes, market changes, labour cost increases and the availability of new equipment, to improve their operation. Sometimes therefore it is necessary to stop and reassess what is happening in a plant in order to continue the never ending work of process optimization. The techniques used here were ideally suited to the gravity/magnetic concentration flowsheets used, but there is no reason why similar studies could not be done in other process plants.The authors of this paper hope that this experience at IOC will be helpful to others who face similar challenges in the pursuit of excellence in their processing plants."

"This paper presents a phenomenological model of the rate of iron(III) precipitation in batch and continuous autoclaves at medium temperature operating conditions. The rate expressions are based on information obtained from the literature and experimentation at low and high pulp densities. Special allowance is made for the formation of surface nuclei, which appears to be promoted at a higher iron(III) precipitate surface area, especially in suspensions of lower terminal acidity. This leads to the formation of secondary particulates and provides the required link to simulate high pulp density leaching-precipitation systems, using low pulp density batch precipitation data. In particular, the model allows direct application of the simulation to the autoclave oxidation of iron-containing copper sulfide concentrates and provides a good estimation of the relative precipitation rate of hematite, the preferred product, compared to hydronium jarosite. Some interesting mechanistic understandings of iron(III) precipitation in autoclaves are further elucidated.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this work is to describe the rate of iron(III) precipitation and the relative amounts of hematite compared to hydronium jarosite precipitation during batch and continuous chalcopyrite oxidation under medium temperature (MT) (~130 to 160ºC) autoclave conditions. Published information has not yet revealed sufficient mechanistic insights about this sparingly soluble salt system under these conditions. The rate expressions in this paper are based in part on current literature information, supplemented by qualitative experimental observation at low pulp density conditions, in particular the high-resolution backscatter electron (BSE) images and particle size distributions (PSDs) of the precipitates. A summary of this work and insights from the literature are presented first, after which the behaviour of iron(III) in high pulp density leaching systems is used to derive a phenomenological expression of the effect of existing iron(III) precipitate surface area on the precipitation rate. The overall regression encapsulates all the experimental results, i.e., those obtained in both batch and continuous autoclave configurations (Steyl, 2012a)."

Since the beginning of the 20th century, coal has been the world?s main source of primary energy. In the last few decades, consumption of coal has gradually decreased in some European countries and elsewhere due to the introduction of other energy sources. Regardless, industry continues to use solid fuels for energy production despite of their association with carbon dioxide emissions (about 7 billion Mg). For global development going forward, it is important to estimate what level of energy consumption can be expected as far into the future as the next few decades. To answer this question, specialized global institutions such as the International Energy Agency, the World Energy Council, the World Coal Institute, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, as well as oil companies (BP, Shell), conduct periodic forecasts of world energy consumption. The development of such forecasts is very complex because their reliability is influenced by many factors that are difficult to estimate, such as economic development, population growth, climate change, and public awareness. We are all aware that the global demand for electricity will rise significantly in the coming years as a result of anticipated population growth, industrial development, rising living standards, and the general development of civilization. The world?s mineable resources in 2010 were as follows: coal 665.6 million Mg, brown coal 195.4 billion Mg, oil 163 million Mg, and natural gas 185.5 billion m3. The annual global primary energy demand in 2008 was more than 12 billion toe (12,267 Mtoe). In 2006, electricity production in the world amounted to 18,921 TW?h. The structure of the primary energy mix in TW?h (2006) was as follows: coal 41.0%; natural gas 20.1%; nuclear fuel 14.8%; hydro energy 16.0%; liquid fuels 5.8%; and other renewable energy sources 2.3%. The European Union (EU) is one of the largest coal consumers in the world. In 2010, the EU-27 produced 396.1 million Mg of brown coal, and 132.9 million Mg of hard coal; 188 million Mg of coal was imported from outside the EU. The largest hard coal producers in the EU-27 are Poland, Great Britain, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Spain; major brown coal producers are Germany, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. For many years, the Polish energy sector has been based on domestic fuel sources ? hard coal and brown coal. The characteristic feature of the Polish balance of primary energy resources is a very high share of coal ? much higher than the world average. Pursuing the decarbonisation of the Polish economy may jeopardize Poland?s energy security, leading to a significant increase in electricity prices, which would hamper the country?s economic development. Price volatility and supply uncertainty are now the dominant features of the international markets for oil and natural gas. The high share of these fuels in meeting energy needs is the reason for unrest in many countries, including those in the EU. Under these circumstances, coal may become the stabilizing element of EU energy security.

This paper discusses the temporary support design methodology for the largest road caverns ever built in Australia—the Lutwyche Caverns—part of the Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia. The Lutwyche Caverns with a maximum excavated span of 27 m form a key component of this major road project, allowing on and off ramps merging with the underground highway. In addition to the two large span caverns, a 15 m soft ground tunnel with 5 m cover above the caverns and two 24 m deep burial chambers for the 12.4 m tunnel boring machines (TBMs) had to be built in record time at Lutwyche.The temporary support design methodology involved the use of a range of analytical approaches, including empirical methods to provide a starting point for design development, key block models to determine the potential influence of discontinuities on excavation stability and 2/3D continuum and discontinuum models to determine the potential influence of adjacent excavations and the proposed construction staging on the design. In addition, probabilistic analysis of potential kinematic instability using a discrete fracture network (DFN) approach was also undertaken to establish the critical block loads for the temporary lining, while the continuum and discontinuum models were used to design the support for the 1.5 m diameter rock pillar at the north end of the northbound cavern.The numerical modelling was undertaken in close conjunction with the contractor to develop the optimal construction sequence, considering the available construction equipment on-site and the overall project program requirements. The Readymix Group have a Quarry Improvement Program - 'Building in Quality (BIQ) which has many parallels to the ICI Explosives' total quality management - 'Quality Improvement Program' (QIP). Both companies have for some time recognised that the 'do it right first time' principle means less wasted effort and materials, that efficiency breeds profitability and so actively promote the quality culture. To install the principles and generate the culture requires considerable commitment and effort from the top down and invariably spreads to the suppliers and sub-contractors. Understanding the component processes involved with the quarry operation, analysis of those processes and gaining a breakdown of the cost of non conformance then allows the astute quarry operator to make the necessary changes to improve the process to realise profits. This paper outlines the steps in such a process and the profitable outcomes of the commitment to continuous improvement at the Nickol Bay Quarry.

This report describes the results of a program to design, procure, install, and evaluate a multi-channel underground telephone system of modern design in the Sunshine Silver Mine near Wallace, Idaho. Although the evaluation portion of the program was deleted, this report contains a cost benefit analysis for such a system using estimates of operational data for the Sunshine Mine. The results show a centrally switched telephone system of conventional design with ruggedized phone enclosures and special environmentally sealed dial pads to be the most economical.

"Introduction.Atmospheric conditions relative to high temperature and humidity are of great importance in mining, as well as in such allied fields as railroad and vehicular tunnels. An extended investigation into the effect of these factors on men has been in progress for some time, both in the field under actual working conditions, and at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the bureau in cooperation with the American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers and the U. S. Public Health Service.For several years one of the writers (Dr. Sayers) and L. Harrington, supervising mining engineer of the bureau, have been studying the effects of hot humid atmosphere in metal mines on the comfort and efficiency of the workers. Some of the reactions experienced in still and in moving saturated mine air at temperatures of 90 to 100°F., with men at rest are presented in a recent paper.****The present paper is based on experiments made under carefully controlled conditions to determine the relative feeling of warmth experienced by men in atmospheres of various degrees of temperature and humidity. The work was conducted by the research laboratory of the American society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, at the Pittsburgh experiment station of the Bureau of Mines, in special physchrometric chambers built for this purpose. It was carried on under the direction of F. Paul Anderson, director of the laboratory, Dr. R. R. Sayers and A. C. Fieldner of the Bureau of Mines. The results given in this paper are for still air only. Investigations of the effects of moving air are being continued, and will be reported later."

Coal resource data from published sources and company files were used by the Bureau of Mines to determine the location and extent of strippable coal reserves in Wyoming. Total strippable reserves of 23 billion tons were estimated in seven major coal areas. Seven large strip mining operations were active in 1969, and their production totaled 45 million tons of coal. Cutoffs used to define strippable reserves were (1) minimum coalbed thicknesses of 5 feet; (2) overburden-to-coal ratios of less than 10 cubic yards of over- burden per ton of coal; and (3) total overburden thicknesses of less than 120 feet, except where reserves occur in multiple beds or a single thick bed. Tertiary rocks along margins of the Powder River basin contain most of the strippable coal reserves in Wyoming. The Wyodak beds, ranging in combined thickness from 30 to 1.30 feet, crop out on the east flank of the basin and contain an estimated 19 billion tons of strippable subbituminous C-rank coals under less than 200 feet of overburden. Partings between these beds total less than 60 feet. The 100- to 200-foot-thick. Healy bed on the western flank of the basin and the 35-foot-thick School and 20-foot-thick Badger beds on the south also contain large strippable reserves. Elsewhere in Wyoming, strippable reserves. Elsewhere in Wyoming, strippable deposits are subbituminous coal of Late Cretaceous and Tertiary ages, mostly in the Hanna and Great Divide basins in the south-central portion of the State and in the Kemmerer-Hamms Fork region in the southwestern corner.

The Vale’s Serra Sul mine, also known as S11D project, is one of the world’s largest open pit iron ore mines, located in Brazil’s Amazon region. The mine produces around 90 Mt of high-quality iron ore annually. Its unique orebody enabled the S11D project to adopt a truckless mining system with In-Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCCs) for ore exploitation and waste stripping. The IPCCs system requires crushing the waste, mainly composed by the jaspilite lithology, and is also conveyed to waste deposits several kilometers away from the mine. Due to Amazon’s environmental restrictions, the project was designed with preliminary geological knowledge, leading to the installation of primary crushers not designed for the hardest jaspilite, with uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) up to 500 MPa. This resulted in low waste crushing performance, affecting stripping ratio and threatening future production. A project was developed to improve the fragmentation of the jaspilite, allowing higher waste IPCC production, and reducing the risk to the production due to low performance of waste crushing and conveying. The first challenge was the independence of the geological and the geomechanical models, while only the geological model was considered in blast designs, the geomechanical model describes six waste groups of jaspilite classified according to their strength. A new geological model was then created to incorporate the geomechanical classification, allowing different blasting design according to the rock strength of the jaspilite. The blasting pattern on most compact jaspilite was reduced 27%, from 22m² to 16m² in 9 7/8” diameter holes, with a proposed theoretical reduction of 23% of the P80, from 326mm to 250mm. The second challenge was the implementation of the new design, as this pattern size and the high powder factor (2.9 kg/m3) were paradigms for such a large iron ore mine. The measured results have shown 25% reduction of the P80, the crushing rate was increased by 17% (230t/h), saving around $2.4 million annually in crushing and conveying system maintenance.

A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland - Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground sub-section of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes Operational.

In the green backfilling mining of underground coal mines, gangue in a coal seam is used to replace and fill goafs. However, the gas drainage time changes in the amount of gangue output and order in the extraction sequence of stope blocks, thereby changing the production output. A multi-objective integer programming model was proposed to solve this based on an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The results show a feasible gangue filling rate can be found and the extraction sequence for a long-term planning time is optimized. It increases the planned annual output by 26% and reduces equipment idle time.
