The Inglewood Gold Project consists of several titles in and around the Inglewood and Wedderburn Goldfields which were purchased from Strata Mining Corporation (now Excalibur Mining Corporation). The Inglewood goldfield has a historical production of approximately 160 000 tonnes at 23 grams per tonne. The company has reopened and developed the Maxwells reef, picking up a high-grade shoot (Max Shoot) identified and worked by Goldquest et al up until 1994. Production ceased on a low gold price, rapidly reducing vein size and a requirement for further development. Greater Bendigo Gold Mines Ltd (GBM) has undertaken the development and encountered the mineralised vein in an increasing size setting with high grades and the existing mine development has access to a further shoot to the north (Max North Shoot). The Maxwells reef also contains the Woolf shoot south of the Maxwells shaft and an inferred resource of ~20 000 ounces is contained from 60 m below surface. Best intersection 2.9 m at 50 g/t. The Maxwells reef area produced approximately 20 per cent of the Inglewood goldfields production and GBM is preparing to increase its exploration efforts across the rest of the field. A processing plant has been constructed at the Maxwells mine site, which is capable of treating tailings, hard rock and alluvial material utilising gravity recovery. The existing Maxwells tailings have been excavated and treatment commenced. It is intended to produce a sand product from the tailings for resale and to reduce the storage requirements per tonne. Several large water dams constructed by Goldquest in the 1990s are being re-engineered to enable storage of significant tonnages of tailings. A level of surface and underground production is planned for 2008 and this is to be expanded into 2009 and beyond. The long-term future at Inglewood is envisaged as structural repeats at depth below the current workings and a project plan to gain deep access will be prepared on successful drilling results.

Coal mine bursts have represented a major hazard for U.S. mining operations for more than 90 years. During this time, many prevention controls have been developed and tested. This paper reviews 11 prevention control techniques. Although coal mine bursts are not common events in most underground coal mines, their occurrence almost always requires a change in mining practice. Over the many years of dealing with these hazards, specialized requirements for layouts and novel extraction sequences have been developed on a site specific basis. The keys to mitigating risks are to properly assess the coal burst hazards and to possess the knowledge and skills to prevent or remediate their occurrence.

The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

The existence of bias in samples taken by cross-stream sample cutters has been investigated using three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) modelling. Detailed quantitative information on overall extraction ratios, size specific extraction ratios, missed and extra sample components can be made by comparing a reference sample to the actual sample. A key advantage of using this modelling approach over physical experimentation is that the reference sample can be measured on precisely the same portion of the stream of material as the actual sample, thereby allowing the elimination of a significant fraction of the variability and allowing statistically significant results to be obtained using many fewer replicates. Quantitative analysis of results broadly supports the commonly-used rule that the cutter aperture should be at least three times the nominal top-size of the material being sampled, but does not support the commonly-used rule requiring increase in cutter aperture if the cutter speed exceeds 0.6 m/s. Sampler performance can be understood in terms of the balance of forces in the congested region of material formed by the slowing of the particle stream due to collisional interactions around the mouth of the cutter.

Following on from the successful completion of three exploration programs and the discovery of two new inactive Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits within New Zealand?s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Neptune is now poised to take the next step from explorer to developer. Neptune considers that commercialization of SMS deposits represents the future of the mining industry, providing a new source of metals to the world economy, and enabling host countries to benefit from this new industry. Neptune recognizes that marine biodiversity is among the greatest treasures of New Zealand. The geological isolation, range and complexity of habitats, and a number of major ocean currents that influence New Zealand have created diverse marine communities. Neptune, recognizing both the environmental importance of marine biodiversity and the value it provides to all New Zealanders has made commitments to ensure sustainable development. There are many unanswered questions regarding how the marine environment may be affected by SMS development, however best practice environmental management is a key aspect of the Company?s approach to our activities and the code for ?Environmental Management of Marine Mining? prepared by the IMMS has played a part in this approach. Neptune has close relationships with the scientific community to ensure that appropriate environmental strategies and plans are developed in order to minimize the effects of our activities on the environment.

Bendigo Mining Limited has established a modern underground gold mine and processing plant at Bendigo in central Victoria. The Bendigo goldfield produced around 22 000 000 oz of gold between 1851 and 1954. Approximately 4 000 000 oz were sourced from surface alluvial workings with the remaining 18 000 000 oz won from underground quartz reefs. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Since that time 20 km of underground development has been completed. Exploration drilling, on-reef development and bulk sampling carried out between 1999 and 2005 resulted in the estimation of a Probable Ore Reserve of 700 000 tonnes at 9.0 g/t gold for 207 000 oz of gold. These Ore Reserves were contained within four reefs located on the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines. Reef mining commenced in late 2005 from the Shywolup and Greater Garrard reefs. Material mined was stockpiled on the surface in preparation for commissioning of the process plant which commenced in mid 2006. Mining and processing were carried out between August 2006 and May 2007 during which time 176 000 tonnes were processed at an average grade of 5.4 g/t gold to produce 26 735 oz of gold. Plant feed was sourced from four reefs. This paper discusses some of the issues which were encountered with the definition and mining of these geologically variable and nuggetty reefs. This paper covers exploration techniques, grade estimation, mine geological control, mining methods, geotechnical issues and reconciliations. It will also discuss some of the lessons learnt and how these will be applied to future Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation, as well as underground operations.

"Steel-making processes generate carbon dioxide air emissions and a slag co-product. The aim of this project was to develop a functional sequestration system using steelmaking slag to permanently capture carbon dioxide emitted in steelmaking offgas. A possible parallel benefit of this process would be rapid chemical stabilization of the slag minerals with reducing swelling or leaching.This paper summarizes the original results of the project, including mineralogical and structural features of carbon sequestration with steel making slag, mathematical modeling of reaction phenomena using a modified shrinking core model, METSIM modeling of several possible industrial applications, a thermo-gravimetrical study of the reaction between slags and different gases, and design and testing for a lab scale apparatus consisted of two reactors.1. IntroductionThe U.S. produces 9-14 Mt of steelmaking slag annually, which represents approximately 10-15 wt. % of crude steel output.1,2 Primary uses for steelmaking slag include high quality mineral aggregate, Portland cement, unconfined fill, soil conditioning, and pH neutralization of abandoned mine drainage.3,4 The key factor prescribing slag use is the alkaline-earth metal (e.g. Ca and Mg) oxides content, which contribute to overall basicity and cementitious strength. However, as-produced steelmaking slag is chemically unstable. Calcium and magnesium oxides readily form hydroxides and carbonates through reaction with atmospheric gases. Both hydroxide and carbonate formation produce substantial mechanical swelling leading to heave failure in confined construction applications, thus many states dictate stockpile aging for 3-6 months prior to commercial use.5,6 Sequestration of carbon dioxide is a natural corollary to forced carbonation. The conversion of CaO/MgO to carbonates serves both to stabilize the slag, and permanently capture and store the CO2."

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

Prolonged exposure to noise can cause permanent damage to the auditory nerve and/or its sensory components, known as noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is the most common occupational disease in the United States today. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is addressing NIHL in the mining industry through several research efforts. This paper presents a general review of NIHL, the status of NIHL in mining, the results of the longwall noise surveys, and a review of the longwall engineering controls research efforts.

There are a number of methods available that can be used to estimate the bearing capacity of piles that are subject to lateral load, such as the theory of subgrade reaction or the elastic continuum approach. The objective of these approaches is to determine the lateral load corresponding to the allowable lateral displacement of the pile. It is important to select the appropriate soil stiffness when analyzing soil behavior within the allowable displacement of piles because the stiffness of soil is dependent on the displacement of piles. Even though pressuremeter tests can measure the stress-strain behavior within a wide strain range, pressuremeter test results have been utilized to assess only the fragmentary soil modulus based on either semi-empirical correlations or analytical approaches. This study is concerned with a methodology that can estimate the horizontal deformational property, while taking into consideration the nonlinear deformational characteristics of sandy soils. Pressuremeter tests were conducted for 15 cases using a calibration chamber. Reloading curves were employed in the estimation of horizontal deformational property in order to minimize the effect of soil disturbance caused by the installation of the probe. The shear modulus degradation characteristics were estimated from the curve fitting for the reloading curve and from extrapolation using the exponential function. In addition, the difference was taken into account between the stress state around the probe in reloading and that of the in-situ state. A consistent relationship was observed between the maximum shear modulus taken from the suggested method and the bender element tests performed in the calibration chamber, simultaneously with the pressuremeter tests. In addition, the results showed significant concurrence with the well-known empirical correlation.

"The material flow of urban eco-industrial system includes linear flow, recycling flow, branching flow, converging flow, etc., which consequently lead to the system complexity. Comparing the urban eco-industrial system to ecosystem, it can be concluded that this complexity is caused by the system adaptability. In the system, the interaction and adaptability between the agents themselves and between the agents and the environment stimulates the changes of material-flow mode, which lead to the evolvement from traditional industry to the eco-industry. Focusing on the evaluation of this evolvement process, two material-flow models are established in this paper, one of which is for the system itself and the other for the agents in system. The latter model is applied to analyze the interrelationships among mass, energy and pollutant flow in the iron and steel industry, and to make the direction clear to improve the resource and energy efficiency and decrease the environmental load.1 IntroductionIndustrial system is a subsystem of urban system, and they are interconnected and interrelated through material flow. The industrial development causes the urbanization. But the traditional industrial mode, characterized by high consumption, high pollution and low efficiency, also causes the “urban problems”, and leads to the reduction of resources carrying capacity and the increase of environmental load. Nowadays a lot of researches focus on how to realize the sustainable development of industries and cities. Thus comes the urban eco-industrial system guided by industrial ecology.Regarded as a Complex Adaptive System (CAS), the urban eco-industrial system evolves for quite a long time. According to Holland’s description on CAS, CAS consists of adaptive agents, which interact with the environment and other agents, learn and accumulate experiences, and accordingly change their own structures and motion modes. In this way, the evolution of the whole macro system is improved [1]. The evolution from traditional industrial system to urban eco-industrial system is mainly reflected in the variety of internal material flows which include not only linear flows but also recycling flows. Therefore, to construct models which clearly analyze industrial metabolism, is of great importance to evaluate industrial system evolution.The article is organized as follows: Section 2 describes the urban eco-industrial system. Section 3 presents the system-oriented metabolic analysis model and the agent-oriented one, analyze the interrelations of energy flow, material flow and pollutant flow in Chinese iron and steel industry through the latter model, and indicates the directions of improving the resource efficiency and energy efficiency, and decreasing the environmental load. The use of piled raft foundations has been considered as an economical alternative to conventional piled foundations because a portion of the applied load is carried by the raft in the design of piled raft foundation. In analyzing the behavior of a piled raft foundation as a settlement reducer, an accurate estimate of settlements of the system should be made on the basis of the understanding of nonlinear behavior of piles in layered soils as well as the interaction between the raft, soils, and piles. Although the 3-dimensional finite element method and simplified analysis methods have been used for the design of piled raft foundations, these methods were found to be inadequate for the practical purpose or could not consider the interactions properly. This study developed an approximate hybrid method of analysis to be used for the practical design of piled raft foundations considering pile-soil, raft-soil, pile-soil-pile and raft-soil-pile interactions. In the presented method of analysis, the settlements of the system are estimated satisfying the compatibility of two separate models which are the flexible raft model consisting of 2-dimensional finite elements supported by springs representing soils and piles, and the group-pile model embedded in layers of soil having different properties. Comparisons with other analytical methods as well as a 3-dimensional FEM program were made to verify the sufficient capabilities of the proposed hybrid model for application to practical design and analysis of piled raft foundations.

Recently, large diameter drilled shafts are often used for foundations of large-scale marine bridges with high capacity and required to resist lateral loads. Steel casings are essential in supporting the hole-diving concrete installation of the drill shafts constructed in the sea. The casings, however, are usually not considered as the structural elements and their load bearing capacity is often overlooked in the design of drilled shafts. As the diameter of drilled shafts becomes larger, there are higher demands for more efficient and economical design of large-scaled drill shafts in the sea. Steel-concrete composite columns are popular for the superstructure of bridges, and the outer steel attached to the shaft increases the shaft resistance through confining the concrete. In this study, the lateral resistance of steel-concrete composite drilled shafts was evaluated quantitatively based on the numerical analysis. When steel casings are used as structural elements such as the composite columns. Ultimate lateral bearing capacity of composite drilled shafts with various diameters was numerically calculated through the 3D finite element analysis. For that, elasto-plastic model with the perfect plasticity is involved to capture the ultimate load. A commercial FEA program, MIDAS-GTS, is used in this study. Real field conditions of the west coast, Korea were examined to set up the ground conditions and pile lengths required for this parametric studies. Detailed characteristics of the stress and displacement distributions are evaluated for the better understanding on the mechanisms of the composite shaft behavior.

Comb-layered textures preserve the cyclic accumulation and release of volatiles inside magmas that are temporally associated with large Cu-Au-Mo-rich porphyry ore deposits. Fluid inclusions in these textures sample pristine magmatic fluid. Microanalysis of this fluid helps constrain the physical models that operate at melt-fluid interface and in the broader magma system responsible for ore deposit formation. The great potential of Brazil for the agricultural production makes our country a generator of agro industrial residues. In this context, the solid-state fermentation appears as a technology that shows alternative ways for those residues, adding values to these raw materials, through the production of substances of industrial interest, besides reducing the possible environmental problems. The main objective of this study was to apply the bovine fat residue associated to the garden grass for the fungal lipase production. Initially, 75 microbial cultures were isolated from garden grass samples after incubation of the mixture with bovine fat. From these cultures were selected the filamentous fungi, whose lipase production abilities were evaluated. The isolation and the selection were accomplished by using a differential culture medium containing Tween 80 as inducer substrate of lipase production. The colonies with lipolytic potential were detected by the presence of white precipitation haloes on the agar. With agro industrial residues the best lipase producer fungus was identified as Penicillium sp in 6 days of solid state fermentation. The crude enzyme obtained was tested in transesterification process for the biodiesel production.

Compacts of crushed waste window glass, fluorescent tubes, drinking glasses and laboratory glass wares were made at various proportions from 106 microns and minus 75 microns powders in combination with 5% bentonite as binder for each glass type, after several trials to determine compatibility of particle sizes. They were made using the uniaxial press at 10,000 psi and sintered at a temperature range of 700- 750oC. The results showed anisotropic shrinkage behavior for all the samples, exhibiting an axial shrinkage lower than the radial shrinkage. Sintered compact from waste drinking glass which comprised of 60% 106 microns and 40% minus 75 microns powders showed the least sintering shrinkage factor of 1.125, fused at 700oC and the highest shrinkage factor of 1.286 obtained at 750oC. This shrinkage behaviour connotes that sintering can be employed to utilize these waste glasses up to the maximum of 95% recycled glass content in ceramic tile production.

For the 22nd year, the chance to exchange knowledge, experience and business cards drew hundreds of mining and phosphate professionals for a two-day regional Phosphate Conference in Lakeland, Florida Nearly 400 people participated in the October conference, which focused on the phosphate industry?s future success. There were 41 exhibitors, 13 program advertisers and 23 sponsors among those supporting the conference. It was chaired by David Gossett, 2006-2007 SME Florida Section Chairman. In the opening panel session that he chaired, John Garlanger (SME) of Ardaman and Associates posed the questions; ?How successful has the industry been? How do we measure it and what factors contributed to the industry?s success? How long will the ethanol boom last? Can the industry obtain the permits it needs to mine for the next 30 years? Can the industry attract and retain the quality of workers it needs??

Risk management is an established loss-control methodology that has been applied successfully in many industries. Recently, interest in this structured approach has grown in the mining industry. The main objective of this research was to develop a risk-assessment process, which is a part of risk management, that can be used by the U.S. mining industry to more thoroughly characterize risks associated with haul truck-related fatalities. The assessment is based on historical data obtained from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigation reports, which includes 113 fatal incidents that occurred from 1995 through 2006. The risk-assessment process used in this research involves the following basic steps: identification of the risks, risk analysis and risk evaluation. The preliminary hazard assessment (PHA) method is used in identifying and quantifying risks. Risk levels are then developed using a pre-established risk matrix that ranks them according to probability and severity. The resulting assigned risk value can then be used to prioritize control strategies. This paper is a part of a detailed study on risk assessment for equipment-related fatalities in mining sponsored by the Western U.S. Mining Safety and Health Training and Translation Center.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate commonly used methods for mitigating the effects of shrapnel from linear shape charges (LSC) used in the demolition industry. Primarily the problem is not that shrapnel poses a threat to human bystanders, but rather it can affect the other charges in the demolition or damage to structures in close proximity to the charges. This research aims to determine what methods have success at stopping shrapnel, what methods do not, and to promote an awareness of the dangers of using the LSC without any protection. The project was carried out at the Experimental Mine site at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. This research is an undergraduate research project to fulfill the requirements for the Explosives Engineering minor program at MST.

Water sprays are a common method used to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions. Various factors such as wettability, surface area coverage, fine particle engulfment rates, interparticle adhesion forces, suppressant penetration and suppressant longevity have all been suggested as critical factors in achieving effective PM control. However, it has not been established which of these factors are the most important. Experimental work indicated that suppressant penetration is the most critical of these factors. The length of time after application that suppressants were effective was also improved by using hygroscopic reagents that retained moisture to prevent evaporation. Maximizing suppressant penetration and improving suppressant longevity led to an average 86% reduction in PM10 concentrations in laboratory dust tower tests.
