Environmental legislation, both existing and proposed, requires that mills, tailings dams, evaporation ponds, and related processing facilities be located, constructed, and operated within stringent guidelines. An early step in planning a new processing facility is performing a site selection study in which topographic, hydrologic, geotechnical, and environmental parameters are evaluated for several alternate sites. Once a site is selected, then an environmental report, including a description of the proposed action, alternatives, baseline surveys, and discussions of potential environmental impacts, mitigation measures and monitoring programs is required. The federal legislation, siting studies, and environmental studies (along with the implications of these as they affect design) are discussed. In addition, costs for performing these studies and implementing control of effluents are discussed.

In 1976, The Bureau of Mines developed a prototype system to sense and extinguish fires in shafts and shaft stations in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Subsequent work modified this technology to include fueling areas, spontaneous combustion zones and coal mines. This paper updates IC-8783 "In-mine Fire Tests of Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection Systems," which was published in 1978 and summarized the design and in-mine, actual fire testing of the first prototype mine shaft fire and smoke protection system. This paper also updates related work from IC-8775 "Spontaneous Oxidation and Combustion of Sulfide Ores in Underground Mines," (also published in 1978) and IC-8808 "In-mine Evaluation of Under- ground Fire and Smoke Detectors," (published in early 1979).

Most Newfoundland mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Some criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

MISCELLANEOUS U.S. 0,029,598 - Extraction of vanadium values from vanadiferous iron oxide ore. A pelletized mixture of ore, limestone and bentonite is roasted in an oxidizing atmosphere to form calcium vanadates, the calcine ground, the ground material leached with aqueous ammonium carbonate or sodium carbonate to produce a vanadium-rich solution while leaving an insoluble residue of calcium carbonate and/or calcium bicarbonate along with undissolved iron values, and the solution separated and treated for its vanadium content. Mine opening stability was investigated by loading model openings to failure. Eight-inch plaster blocks were cast with small uniform section openings passing through the centers. After curing, the models were jacketed and loaded hydrostatically in a closed vessel. Opening size, shape, and orientation were varied to determine how these factors influence opening stability.
