"Rocks of the Whitewater Group (Aphebian age) oc ithin the Sudbury Basin and consist of three formations rre, from oldest to youngest: Onaping, heterolithic breccias lus an igneous-textured component; Onwatin, argillite and siltstone; and Chelmsford, greywacke with minor argillite with siltstone. Mineralization in these rocks is as follows:1) Sulphides are disseminated throughout the Onaping Formation. Pyrrhotite, the major sulphide mineral, occurs mainly as fragments; other sulphides are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, pyrite and marcasite.2) Zn, Pb, Cu, Ag and A u mineralization in the Vermilion member, a carbonate-chert unit near the base of the Onwatin Formation (Vermilion and Errington mines).3) Pyrite and minor base metals in the Onwatin Formation .4) Mineralized quartz veins, located at or near the base of the Onaping Formation, include such deposits as Moore Lake (Pb, Zn and Ag), Foisey (Zn, Pb), Papineau (Cu, Au and Co) and Proulx (Pb, Zn, and Cu). Quartz-carbonate veins in a meta-gabbro sill contain Cu, Zn, As and Au. Material from quartz veins from two former ""gold mines"" (Gordon Lake and Creighton) yielded no Au values.5) Anthraxolite veins in the Onwatin Formation .The mineral occurrences can be explained in term of either the volcanic theory or meteorite-impact theory of basin formation. According to the latter theory, the sulphide fragments in the Onaping Formation may have been formed by the brecciation of sulphide-rich pods located in the upper mantle and at the base of the transient crater; some of the sulphides may have been derived from target rocks of the Huronian Supergroup. The Vermillion-Errington deposits may represent sedimentary exhalative deposits of the Remac type; mineral-rich brines, trapped at the base of the transient crater, rose upward and precipitated the mineralized carbonate-chert under reducing conditions. These conditions continued throughout the deposition of the upper Onwatin Formation but pyrite was the only sulphide that formed.The quartz veins were emplaced during the time of basin deformation. Metamorphism remobilized and concentrated carbonaceous material in the Onwatin Formation 10 form the anthraxolite veins."

"With the continuous depletion of high-grade tungsten ores, the low-grade refractory wolframite has become an important source for the tungsten industry. However, the large-scale utilization of low-grade refractory wolframite is disappointedly scarce, it is due to leanness of valuable minerals, complex mineral characterization and use of toxic collectors.The aim of this study was to develop an environment-friendly processing flowsheet, which was used for beneficiation of low-grade tungsten ore containing 0.45% WO3 from New Brunswick in Canada, and the content of arsenic is 0.68% in this materials. The objective of beneficiation studied was to obtain a concentration containing 60% WO3 with less than 0.5% of arsenic under the condition without any flotation reagents. In this environment-friendly processing flowsheet, magnetic separation technology, classification and gravity separation technology were combined and employed. Firstly, magnetic separation was employed for the first pre-concentration process, over 95% of the feed was rejected as the final tailings, meanwhile, over 85% of arsenic minerals were removed with tailings. Secondly, gravity separation tests were employed on the classified magnetic pre-concentrate in the second pre-concentration process, a second pre-concentrate with WO3 grade of 54.32% and As grade of 5.41% was obtained. Finally, two stage magnetic cleaning were conducted on the second pre-concentrate for upgrading the second pre-concentrate, the mostly arsenic and gangues were removed from the second pre-concentrate. Finally, this novel processing achieved an effective recovery of fine wolframite from low grade tungsten ore with high arsenic. A concentrate with WO3 grade of 64.81% were obtained in new opened processing flowsheet, and As grade was less than of 0.5% in this concentrate. Furthermore, remarkable feature of this processing flowsheet is environment-friendly due to avoid using the toxic flotation reagents during the whole mineral processing.INTRODUCTIONTungsten is an essential metal and is the most widely used in industrial production such as national defense, electro-mechanical products, textile and leather sectors (Srivastava et al., 2000). Wolframite and scheelite are the main mineral sources of tungsten metal. With the continuous depletion of high-grade tungsten ores and the increasing demand for tungsten alloy, the low-grade refractory wolframite has become an important source for the tungsten industry. "Misty Mountain Gold Limited (MGL - TSE VSE, MGLCF - NASDAQ) of Vancouver, owns the Harmony Gold Project located in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia. The deposit contains a mineable reserve of 2.3 million ounces of gold, at a 1.2 g/t cut-off and an average grade of 2.1 1 g/t Au.Discovered in 1970 and frequently investigated by previous owners, full-scale production has not yet occurred because of the complex metallurgy of the deposit. Recent process studies that were completed in six months at Process Research Associates Ltd. (PRA) of Vancouver resulted in significant improvements to the project viability. The work involved detailed mineral processing studies aimed at achieving a marketable concentrate. An option for bio-oxidation and cyanidation to allow on-site dor6 production was also investigated.The main findings at PRA followed the front-end recovery of finely divided free gold (Au) by gravity concentration. Approximately 20% of Au reported to less than 0.2% of the mass, resulting in a grade exceeding 500g/t Au. The resulting gravity tailing provided a uniform feed for flotation evaluation. The optimization of this step allowed for a reasonable primary grind size of 80% passing (&) 50pm. Efficient slime’s rejection was made possible by flotation at a reduced pulp density, and pre-oxidized sulphides were reactivated with Na,S. The regrinding of the bulk flotation concentrate followed by up to five stages of cleaning resulted in a combined gravity + flotation product of 50g/t Au with 82% recovery in less than 4% of the feed mass.Further studies indicated that the flotation concentrate was amenable also to tank bio-oxidation. At 65% sulphide oxidation the gold recovery improved from less than 70% to 90% by cyanide extraction using CIL (carbon in leach). This compares to less than 45% gold recovery from whole-ore cyanidation in several previous studies. Heap leaching may also be considered for lower grade material. PRA’s methodical approach and consistent results dispelled the uncertainty about predicting the material behavior for the Harmony Property."

"THE LETHBRIDGE COAL FIELD lies mainly .to the north and west of the city of Lethbridge. Mining carried on in this area for over eighty years until 1965. Before the building of a railway the coal was carried by bullock wagon to Montana for use in smelting, and for a while by river boat to Medicine Hat for railway use. The single, almost flat, worked seam is designated the ""Galt"" seam and is about 1.5 metres thick. It belongs to the Belly River formation and is under cover of 80 to 180 metres of weakly stratified sediments. A complex system of cross faults adds to the mining difficulties. Close timbering required in the entries and rooms reflected in a high timber cost and lower output per man shift. The coal is High Volatile"" C"" bituminous in rank with maximum gross calorific value of 11,200 Btu per pound and with a well defined cleavage. Roof conditions in the field range from very tender and very heavy on the south end of the field and west of the Oldman River to a more stable character to the north. Relatively speaking, the whole field would earn a rather tender rating and definitely so in relation to many U.S. fields. Floor conditions are characterized by a bentonitic type heaving in the south end of the field west of the Oldman river to a more stable situation in the north, which can tolerate shuttle car operation if kept drained. Water problems are minimal, except paralleling the Oldman River, where the seam dips below the river level. While vigilance is necessary to prevent accumulations of gas, the volume is rather limited. The seam was entered by shafts, except where small mines were located along the Oldman river banks and gained access by drifts. The coal seam was developed by driving either 3 or 4 Face entries 2 1/2 metres (8 ft) wide on 18-metre ( 60-ft) centres. Sets of dual butt entries driven at right angles to the Face entries completed development work. Normally rooms up to 8 metres wide were turned off the butt entries on up to 11 - metre centres. These were worked in groups of three to five, depending on the roof conditions, and normally advanced 60 m (200 ft). In some areas rooms had to be abandoned short of their objectives due to roof pressure, heaving floor and intermittent work."

"In this study, hardness test, differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)and transmission electron micros copy were carried out to investigate the age-hardening behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloy with a Mg+Si concentration of 1.5mass%, and a Mg/Si ratio of 1.0. Pre-aging treatment was conducted for the solution-treated and then water-quenched specimen at 100, 80, 60, 40, 20 (natural aging), 0 and -20°C for 20min or 5h, followed by artificial aging at 170°C for 20min. It was found that when pre-aging time is prolonged from 20min to 5h, the bake-hardening response is deteriorated irrespective of the pre-aging temperature. In particular, the specimens subjected to pre-aging at 20-40°C for 5 h hardly increased the hardness with the subsequent artificial aging. From the results of DSC measurement, it was suggested that as pre-aging temperature is lowered, the amount of solute clusters formed during pre-aging, i.e. Mg-Si clusters and Si-rich clusters, is decreased, but the ratio of Si-rich clusters is increased, resulting in the deteriorated bake-hardening response.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, Al-Mg-Si alloys have been widely used forautomotive body panels due to their excellent characteristics such as high strength-to-weight ratio and good formability. Their strength is increased not only by artificial aging during paint-bake treatment; i.e. “bake-hardening”, but also when kept at room temperature(RT);i.e. “natural aging”, in association with the suppressed bake-hardening response. Such a “negative effect of two-step aging” has been a serious problem because Al-Mg-Si alloy coils are unavoidably maintained at RT in the manufacturing process of body panels; e.g. shipping and storage. However, it was reported that pre-aging above 70°C before the two-step aging can restore the bake-hardening response, and such an improvement is related to the formation of solute clusters(Sato, 2006; Abidet al., 2010; Takaki et al., 2014; Zandbergen et al., 2015). From the comprehensive analysis by three-dimensional atom probe (Aruga et al., 2014 and 2015), it is believed that Mg-Si clusters formed during pre-aging transform into the strengtheningß"" phase, whereas Si-rich clusters formed during pre-aging act as a detrimental precursor of ß""phase. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of pre-aging conditions, especially pre-aging temperature and time, on the formation of solute clusters during pre-aging, in order to elucidate the mechanism of the age-hardening behavior of an Al-Mg-Si alloy."

"The design of carbon-in-pulp (CIP), and carbon-in-leach (CIL) adsorption circuits has essentially remained unchanged since the early days of the carbon process for gold recovery. For CIP circuit the pulp residence time is traditionally fixed at one hour per contactor with a carbon concentration of between 15 and 20 grams per litre, and the counter current carbon transfer rates are in the region of 15% pulp recycle. For CIL, the pulp residence time is usually three hours per contact or, with lower carbon concentrations ( 5 to 10 grams per litre).The drawbacks of using the counter current CIP/CIL adsorption circuits are discussed using modeling developed for CIP/CIL plant design. Counter current CIP/CIL, circuits are then compared with the carousel method of adsorption circuit design.The use of equipment suitable for the carousel approach is discussed which is, the AAC cylindrical and pumping (MPS) screens, the AAC pump-cell plant and launder designs.Finally, two plants at the Vaal Reefs Gold Mining and Exploration Company that use carousel adsorption circuits, namely the Vaal Reefs No. 1 Gold Plant, a CIL plant with stepped contactors, and the Vaal Reefs No. 2 Gold Plant, a CIP using a very short residence time (AAC pump-cell) are discussed."

This part of the paper will cover the circumstances that led the Company to decide in favour of coal. The second part, to be presented by C. F. Doerr, will describe how the Wabamun coal mine has been developed to supply the large fuel requirements of the power plant. "The stabilization of tailings has been a matter of concern to the Mining Industry for many years. In earlier times, when mines were small and only high grade ore deposits were mined, the problem was not a great one. But, more recently - during the last 30 to 40 years - the increased world demand for various metals, combined with the vast strides that have been made in the improvement of metallurgical extraction processes, have resulted in the development of lower grade ore bodies.About 30 years ago The International Nickel Company started experiments to stabilize the surface of the tailings and prevent them from becoming a dust source under certain weather conditions. The use of chemicals to form seals, covering with crushed stone, mulching with straw and some early seedings were some of the stabilizing methods tried. Results were either unsuccessful or impractical economically.In 1954 a series of experiments to establish vegetation on the tailings began. Varying degrees of success were achieved but however unsuccessful a particular scheme turned out, the attempt to find a solution was never written off. As we look back, we realize that the first significant break-through came as the result of three test plots planted in the spring of 1957. Each plot covered an area of approximately one-third of an acre. One plot was successful and persisted until it was covered up by the expansion of the tailings area in 1961.In 1960 a review of all our test plots to that date was carried out to assess the factors which effect the chance of grass being established."

"The results of tests carried out on a 3-in. hydrocyclone have shown the linear relationships that exist between: (1) the flow-rate of water in the feed to and the overflow product from the cyclone; (2) the flow-rate of solids in the feed to and the underflow product from the cyclone. The underflow size distribution of an operation has been found to be linear and its usefulness in evaluating particle distribution in the cyclone has been discussed. Effects of design and operating variables on the above relationships have been discussed. The performance of this 3-in. hydrocyclone has been compared with that of a 20-in. cyclone, the results for which are available in the literature."

"Pure magnesium is a material with high functionality, however, the cold drawing of this material is very difficult, that is why, until this day there are no optimal cold drawing conditions. Furthermore, cold drawing of pure magnesium wire shows a problem with internal defects that occurs under certain conditions. In this research, the aim is the suppression of internal defects, and final target is to create the optimal cold drawing conditions for pure magnesium wires. The first step is the investigation of the drawing limit by using 250°Cannealed wire. As a result, reduction of 10% per pass was chosen for stable wire drawing. However, in this case, it was found that internal defects occurred at total reduction of over 45% during drawing. Investigation of intermediate annealing conditions that can suppress internal defects, and influence on internal defect that the die half angle and reduction per pass. As a result, it was found that the drawing condition capable of suppressing internal defects most efficiently was 13% reduction drawing by using under 6°half angle die. Consequently, it’s possible to manufacture a cold fine drawn pure magnesium wire of 100µm, without defects in the center of the wire and hindering its mechanical properties.INTRODUCTIONMagnesium is a light and high functionality material that has high vibration absorbency, heat dissipation, electromagnetic wave-shielding and recycling efficiency (Conruy, 1989). However, proper cold wire drawing conditions haven’t been established, that is why warm or hot processing is commonly used (Oishi, Mori, &Kawabe, 2005). As a result, strength improvement of the wires is not possible, that is why the production of medical tools is disregarded. If it was possible to cold draw magnesium wires, the applications for material products would expand. Further, in wire drawing such difficult processing material, if appropriate processing conditions are not selected, defects will be generated inside the drawn wire."

"INTRODUCTIONWhile this paper deals specifically with potential coal use at the Cold Lake Project of Esso Resources Canada Limited, a majority of the technical aspects of coal conversion could apply to any oil field and industrial boilers or stearn generators. In 1962, Imperial Oil Limited's production arm (the forerunner of Esso Resources), began examining methods of extracting bitumen from a 50 m thick layer of oil sand buried 450 m below the surface in the Cold Lake area. Almost two decades of research followed to develop an in situ oil sands recovery technology that made commercial production feasible.A $13 billion mega project that would have produced 22 000 m3/d (141 000 barrels/day) of synthetic crude oil (160 000 bpd of bitumen) was shelved in 1981, and ultimately replaced by a phased development strategy, involving smaller production units, to bring blended bitumen production on stream as markets and prices permit.The first two phases came into production in 1985. There are currently a total of six phases in production with four more in the construction stage. Each phase has 130to 140production wells (initially) and a central plant with water treatment, crude treatment and stearn generating facilities capable of producing 150 m3/d (9500 bpd of raw bitumen). The stearn generation section for each phase consists of three 180millionBtulhour oil fieldsteam generators.In its natural state, the bitumen is too thick to be recovered using conventional oil recovery techniques. At the Cold Lake Project, bitumen is recovered by a method called cyclic stearn stimulation. Water is pumped to the central plant where it is treated and heated to produce high pressure, high temperature steam. During the steam cycle, this steam is transported in insulated pipelines to the wells for injection into the oil sand formation. This cycle lasts from 30 to 50 days, heating the formation and causing the bitumen to flow. Following an initial flowback period, a surface based artificial lift system pumps the heated liquid bitumen, mixed with water and gas, out of the well and back to the central plant. The water and gas are separated from the bitumen, with the gas being used to provide some of the fuel for the stearn generators and the water being treated and recycled. Approximately 5% of the water cannot be recycled and is disposed of by injection into deep formations . The bitumen is blended with a diluent and shipped by pipeline to market."

Safe extraction of the valued ore resource in the deep levels of VALE Creighton Mine has progressed in a pillar-less fashion using vertical retreat, slot-slash and uppers retreat methods since the cessation of ?cut and fill? mining in the late 1980?s. Sequencing of the panel extraction and filling has been the key to successful exploitation of high stress orebodies at depth. In late 2010, discussions between the Operating Department and Creighton Ground Control revealed an opportunity to evaluate a trial primarysecondary sequence in the west end of the 400 Orebody at the 2340m horizon. To manage the trial primarysecondary project, a high level risk analysis and management of change was carried out to mitigate potential danger. As part of the requirements, an instrumentation project was conducted in the hanging wall and footwall bottomsills of the secondary panel and within the secondary panel itself. The extraction sequence was modeled with Map3D® software, confirming high stress levels with the advance of the primary panel. Enhanced ground support was installed based on modelling results. A key objective of the instrumentation project was to verify support system response to mining and to obtain knowledge in regards to the behavior of the stope. This paper describes the first time that this type of new innovative instrumented rockbolt technology had been used in a hard rock mining environment. Understanding of the physical deformation mechanisms of ground support in response to high stress conditions is the basis for an effective ground control strategy. The data played an important role in subsequent enhanced ground support system design at the mine and importantly, established the fact that the secondary pillar had not totally failed. Subsequent cavity monitor results helped establish that fact.

Nickel oxide granules formed by pyrohydrolysis of a chloride solution, were reduced in hydrogen. Below 400 °C, an incubation period was observed, followed by very slow reduction. In the temperature range from 400 to 600 °C, the rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and increasing hydrogen pressure. Microscopic analysis showed that in this temperature range the reaction followed the shrinking core model. Above 600 °C, the reduction rate decreased noticeably before suddenly becoming very fast at and above 950 °C. Microscopy showed inner bands of metallization inside the outer metallic rim, indicating partial blockage of the interface between the reacted and un-reacted NiO core. At these temperatures, particle agglomeration and sintering were also found to take place. Surface segregation of sulphur may account for the slow down in reduction rate above 600 °C. From an industrial point of view, reduction should be carried out from 550 to 600 °C with as high a concentration of hydrogen as possible. If sintering and agglomeration are not of any concerns, reduction can be carried extremely fast at about 1000 °C.

Samples of the reacting suspension particles were taken from the reaction shaft of a commercial flash furnace at different heights. The processes of matte and slag formation and morphology of the samples in the shaft were observed and analyzed. Variations of matte and slag composition in the shaft were investigated. By analyzing the samples taken from the settler at different locations, settler processes were studied such as slag formation, agglomeration and separation of matte-slag phases, Fe3O4 reduction, copper-in-slag reduction etc. In accordance with the characteristic of matte and slag formation the flash furnace can be divided into 6 functional regions, and a mechanism model called as “Micro bath process” is proposed for matte and slag formation in a commercial flash furnace. INTRODUCTION During flash smelting, concentrate particles scattered in the reaction shaft complete their oxidation reactions in suspension. The droplets produced fall into the settler beneath with a small amount of un-melted solid particles, agglomerate and separate into matte and slag layers which are tapped out from their tap holes separately. With respect to the extent of slagging reaction in the reaction shaft, there isn’t any commonly accepted understanding in literature (Kimura, Ojima, Mori & Ishii, 1986; Kemori & Kondo et al.,1988; Kemori, Denholm & Kurokawa, 1989; Fagerlund &Jalkanen, 2000). Some assume that the slagging reaction in the shaft can be ignored and some propose that all slag is produced in the shaft. With regards to the characteristics of the physical-chemical changes of concentrate particle in the reaction shaft, although there are some research results reported from pilot scale and commercial scale experiments (Kemori, Ojima & Kondo, 1988; Hagni, Vierrether & Sohn, 1988; Jorgensen, Taylor, Dickinson & Stevenson, 1992; Swinbourne, Simak & Yazawa, 2002; Kivinen & Tuominen, 2005), they are generally limited themselves to theoretical analysis and calculations. No studies are published concerned with the processes of matte and slag generation in the shaft, quantitative analysis of the processes, variations of matte and slag composition and morphologies of the melts along the axis of the shaft, etc.

Practically, the variable conditions in the flotation circuit and the difficulty in maintaining accurate instrumentation information all add to the complexity of automatic control.Further development at the Kidd Creek concentrator has resulted in a 3075 mtpd copper flotation circuit capable of running twenty-four hours a day under the direct control of an optimizing supervisory computer.Three main streams, continuously monitored by an XRF analyser, supply circuit information to the optimizing computer. Circuit efficiency calculations (from smelter contract terms) and target setpoints allow the computer to determine the economic optimum direction to move the circuit based on the grade/recovery relationship. Circuit manipulation is accomplished by precise pumping of collector and frother reaqents together with accurate control of flotation bank pulp levels. The former uses computer controlled diaphragm pumps and the latter is achieved by control loops utilizing a float type level transmitter, variable position dart plugs and a process computer working to setpoints determined by the optimizing computer.The development of a fully automated flotation circuit is by no means complete, but increased knowledge and major hardware improvements have allowed its progression to a higher level of sophistication."
