Covers with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) have been used in recent years as gas barriers for the isolation of wastes, including reactive mine tailings. Capillary barrier effects help to maintain a high degree of saturation in the moisture retaining layer, which then reduces gas flux. Various factors affect the degree of saturation of the moisture retaining layer in a CCBE, such as the material water retention characteristics and layer thickness. Slope geometry can also influence the hydrogeological behaviour of a CCBE, but this factor has frequently been ignored in the past. In this paper, the authors show some results of a numerical study that illustrates the influence of slope on the behavior of capillary barriers made of different types of material. The numerical model calculations are based on an actual case of a CCBE constructed in northern Quebec. This investigation shows that the water content profile is greatly affected by the position along the slope. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate the influence of the geometry to properly establish the performance of a cover system.

Bigger is indeed better in today's surface mining operations. That is especially true regarding haul trucks. Building larger, "supersize" trucks, however, means designing more powerful engines and drive systems that are also more efficient and environmentally friendly. And miners are demanding that these trucks have longer service lives with minimum maintenance. So truck makers are teaming with engine manufacturers and mining customers to design these larger trucks that will ultimately lead to reduced mining costs. About 180 of those truck makers, engine designers and miners gathered in Tucson, AZ in September to discuss the state of haul trucks in today's mining environment. Haulage 2000 was sponsored by World Mining Equipment and attracted attendees from around the world. Manufacturers described the latest in haul truck advancements. These included the design of more powerful engines, improvements to mechanical and ac and dc drive systems and suggestions on how to reduce maintenance spending. Technology improvements in tires for larger struck was discussed as was the cost efficiency of new, lighter-weight bed liners. The following is a summary of a handful of the presentations.

Microbiological leaching has been used as an alternative approach to conventional hydrometallurgical methods of uranium extraction. In the microbiological leaching process, iron-oxidizing bacteria oxidize pyritic phases to ferric iron and sulfuric acid, and uranium is solubilized from the ore due to sulfuric acid attack. If uranium in the ore material is in the reduced, tetravalent form (UIV), a red ox reaction is involved whereby uranium is oxidized to the hexavalent form (UvI) upon dissolution. In acid-leaching systems, the primary oxidant is ferric iron, which is reduced to ferrous iron by its chemical reaction with UIV. The ferrous iron thus formed is reoxidized to ferric iron by iron-oxidizing bacteria such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Nutritional requirements and responses to environmental extremes of acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria are appraised. The S-entity in Fe-sulfides is oxidized to sulfate by bacteria similar to Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. Pyrite and marcasite oxidation is a sulfuric acid forming reaction. Heap, dump and in situ leach techniques are feasible as bacterial leaching systems.

Coal mining historically has been a hazardous occupation but, in recent years, tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental coal mine deaths and injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the basic principles of accident prevention as they are related to coal mining. Accident prevention fundamentals are no different for coal mining than for any other type of work. The fundamentals apply to all industries. Construction workers may be struck by falling tools and materials, and miners may be struck by falling slate and coal. Sailors may be trapped by shipboard fires, and miners may be trapped by mine fires. Railroad brakemen may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers, and miners may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers. Many other examples could be cited, but the point is that accidents that happen in coal mines are basically similar to accidents that happen in other industries. Thus, the basic principles for preventing accidents apply in coal mining as they do in any other type of work.

This paper considers mining ventures occurring in rural communities in Galicia, Spain and Western Australia, Australia. It compares and contrasts the communities where mining is taking precedence over other industries, examining the potential land use conflicts and the future of both the communities and the mines currently operating there. The Galician case study, Trevinca, is located 200 km inland and was once a primary producing area, notable for its scenic alpine landscapes, which have since been developed for small scale tourism purposes. The Australian case study, Boddington is located 100 km inland in what has been a highly productive farming area. Mining was a marginal industry in the case study areas but due to the comparative devaluing of agriculture and tourism and the increased value of mining outputs, mining has increased in scale and economic importance. This paper will consider the environmental, social and economic impacts that have occurred in both the case study localities. Where there have been land use conflicts, strategies for minimising the adverse outcomes will be considered.

The primary factors that determine the marketability of coal from various supply centers in the U.S. are coal quality and supply; i.e. low sulfur, moderate- to high- Btu coals have large market areas when compared to less expensive but poorer quality coals. Price is the major factor in the competitive marketing of similar coal products. Good quality, (moderate- to high- Btu, low sulfur) coals from the Powder River and central Appalachian basins are marketed over large areas of the country, and central Appalachian coal is widely distributed in foreign markets, primarily as coking coal. In contrast, poorer quality bituminous coal (low calorific value and/or high sulfur) from the Illinois Basin, northern Appalachian Basin, and lignite from the Gulf Coast is marketed in or near the States in which it was mined even though the price at the mines may be lower than mine prices for central Appalachian coal. Widespread distribution of sub-bituminous Powder River Basin coal is enhanced by its exceptionally low mining costs, which offsets transportation costs to distant markets.

In recent times, with rare exceptions, most economically viable ore discoveries have been large, low-grade and located in remote parts of the world. Mining companies have often shown to be incapable of mitigating their social and economic impact on local communities. Sustainable development and relations can be achieved by implementing bottom-up methodologies to the top-down tools already in use by mining companies. In order to magnify the importance of enterprise facilitation as a primary method for community development, data from 25 years of community based work around the world was used. Results highlight the need for a grassroots approach to local economic and community development, which focuses on the creation of a parallel economy in communities. Using solely top-down methodologies for developing community relations is shown to be a limited resource for mining companies. There are fundamentally two dangers for mining companies: alienating the local population, resulting in militancy and lengthy legal battles to obtain a license to operate; and, being accountable for building social and economic infrastructure that are not the company?s responsibility.

Introduction Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is an essential nutrient required for growth. Since all living things need potash, the major demand for potash - about 95% of the total - is as a fertilizer. Agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times. This increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows then that potash will always be in demand. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain phosphorous (P) and nitrogen (N) are complementary and not competing products. Fireplace ashes (pot-ashes) have a relatively high potassium content. Their value as a fertilizer had been recognized for centuries. But today's potash industry did not begin until deposits of potassium-rich ore were discovered and exploited in Europe during the 19th century. Canadian potash development Potash in Saskatchewan was first recognized in 1943. It was discovered as a byproduct of an oil exploration program. But it was several years later before the existence of a major commercial deposit was acknowledged, and not until 1951 that the first attempt at development occurred. That attempt was unsuccessful. The shaft flooded and was abandoned. It did, however, demonstrate the need for new technology to penetrate the waterlogged Blairmore layer. This was eventually developed and the first mines were brought into production in the early 1960s. Once the technology was available, and the extent and quality of the potash beds became known, a number of companies proceeded to develop mines. By 1970, seven mines were in operation and three more were nearing completion. Combined, total capacity then was 7.6 Mt/a (8.4 mil¬lion stpy) K20. At that time, world potash consumption was about 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy). This increase in supply from Canada produced a large potential surplus that shattered the prevailing balance between supply and demand. Although world demand increased steadily throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, it was several years before world supply and demand were again in balance. Saskatchewan capacity has been expanded a number of times. It now stands at 10.7 Mt/a (11.7 million stpy) K20. Actual production has not approached this figure, however. Two new mines in New Brunswick have recently been built with a combined annual capacity of 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) K20. Total Canadian capacity of about 12 Mt/a (13 million stpy) now amounts to 30% of world capacity. Central offshore marketing organization Canadian Potash Exports Ltd. (Canpotex) was created in 1970 as the offshore marketing organization for Canadian producers. Canpotex is owned by Saskatchewan producers and is their exclusive marketing organization for offshore business. Each company handles its own sales in Canada and the US, but all sales to other markets are handled through and by Canpotex. The Saskatchewan industry has an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere in the world. Large efficient mines have production costs that compare favorably with other producing countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets. It therefore needs the ef¬ficiencies that stem from one organization that coordinates all offshore shipments and minimizes distribution costs. Agriculture guides potash market In the period following World War II, potash was a classic growth industry. World demand increased each year from 1945 to early 1970s. Since then, demand has been more erratic. Some years show substantial increases, but are followed by significant declines. For about the last decade, the pattern has been unclear and future demand has become correspondingly difficult to predict. North America and Europe together account for about 40% of the world potash consumption. In both areas, farming is characterized by surplus production, declining crop prices, and expensive government support programs. Under those circumstances, farmers respond by minimizing input costs. Fertilizer is one of the items they reduce. Potash is retained in the soil. It is possible to reduce potash application with no immediate deterioration in crop yield. INTRODUCTION Uranium mine inspection in Canada forms one element of the enforcement of the Atomic Energy Control Act; it is under this Act that all Canadian uranium mines and mills are licensed to operate. Inspection duties are carried out by a small core staff of federal government inspectors (working for the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB)) largely supplemented by provincial mine inspectors working on behalf of the AECB. Unlike most resource extraction in Canada, uranium mining is under federal jurisdiction and consequently it was the AECB who decided in 1975 that changes in the Canadian uranium mining industry, particularly its expansion and the expanding role of the mine inspector in the limiting of exposures, warranted the offering of a special radiation protection training course. The Uranium Mine Inspector Training Course (UMITC) was first conducted in 1976 at the Elliot Lake Centre in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Subscription for the course was not limited to mine inspectors to enable union stewards, management personnel and provincial/federal labour inspectors to attend. This paper will present an outline of the course content, the format of its presentation and non-curriculum aspects of running a course of this type in uranium-producing community. The core lecturers for UMITC are drawn from the Radiation Protection and Uranium Mine Divisions of the AECB. In addition, guest lecturers are invited from universities and medical research centres together with industry professionals and government researchers. In all some twenty-four plus presentations are made over the first five days of lectures. The program topic areas, hazards, controls, measurements, record-keeping and health effects are preceded by an intensive half-day session on radiation fundamentals. TOPICS Hazards [Dust] A review of the dynamics of airborne particles including the effects of particle size, gravity and wake-turbulence on the behaviour of dust clouds. Associated topics are migrational aspects of dust particles and specific dust-generating mine operations. [Radiation] Canadian uranium mines are increasingly diverse in nature ranging from large scale low-grade underground operations in Elliot Lake to smaller high-grade open pits in Saskatchewan. Papers are presented on assessments of internal and external exposure, the metabolic pathways of ingested or inhaled radiation and the specifics of mine and mill hazards. Radiation hazards are further broken down into gamma surveys of uranium mines, radon daughter concentrations and problem areas. Controls The relationship between mining methods and the operating environment is critically important to ensuring safe working conditions. This refers to both the selection of machinery/devices, etc., and to engineering controls which are instituted to remedy problems created by new technology. UMITC examines a number of possible mining techniques, their criteria for selection and impact on the working environment. Control measures, ventilation practices and design, the need for continuous water misting and special open-pit precautions are presented. These lectures frequently conclude with suggestions for better operating guidelines for mine ventilation systems and the need for greater co-operation between the ventilation department and the underground crews. Measurements Uranium mining regulations stress the need for a high standard of exposure monitoring, statistical planning and record-keeping. [Statistics] Although many course participants are well versed in statistics, certain fundamentals are repeated and include, the concepts of mean, variance, standard deviation and standard deviation of the mean. Confidence levels, decision-making based on sample statistics and statistical records are also discussed. [Dust Measurement] Dust measurement is particularly critical in the mines where the high silica content of the ore body, such as those at Elliot Lake, results in the continuous generation of dust. Sampling practices, filtration, impaction, thermal impaction and electrostatic precipitation are explained together with the methods of counting samples to determine free silica. Konimetric and gravimetric techniques for dust sampling are compared and contrasted. [Radiation Measurements] Both collective and personal dosimetry systems are used in the Canadian uranium mining industry and lectures are presented on each. Techniques and possible sources of error are discussed for a variety of radon and radon daughter measurement methods - Lucas method, Tsivoglou and modified Tsivoglou, Kusnetz, Rolle. Instant working level meters and personal alpha dosimeters are explained in terms of calibration, maintenance, readout and estimation of accuracy. A lecture outlining dose estimation by means of bio-assay, whole-body counting and the use of TLD's concludes the topic. Record-Keeping An overview of the problems of changing limits,

Introduction FMC's Paradise Peak gold mine was discovered by staff geologists in July 1983. Located south of Gabbs, in western Nevada, the deposit contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of ore grading at 3.6 g/t (0.105 oz per st) of gold and 129 g/t (3.75 oz per st) silver. It is estimated that the ore contains 34 t (1.1 million oz) of recoverable gold and 933 t (30 million oz) of recoverable silver. The 3.6 kt/d (4000 stpd) mill began operation April 14, 1986, just 18 months after Davy McKee completed a feasibility study and construction, and two-and-a-months ahead of schedule. It also came in about 10% under budget at a cost of about $100 million. Crushing Run-of-mine ore is delivered from the mine in 45-t (50-st) haul trucks to a 272-kt (300,000-st) capacity open air stockpile. Ore is reclaimed using 5 m3 (7 cu yd) front-end loaders that feed a 91-t (100-st) hopper equipped with a 610- x 610-mm (24- x 24-in.) grizzly. A 1.4- x 11-m (54-in. x 35-ft) apron feeder delivers ore from the hopper by way of a vibrating grizzly screen with 127 mm (5 in.) openings to a 1- x 1.3-m (43- x 51-in.) Rexnord jaw crusher. Crushed material is conveyed to a 1.8- x 4-m (6- x 14-ft) Link Belt vibrating screen equipped with a 50-mm (2-in.) manganese grizzly bar deck. Screen oversize is fed to a 1.7/0.6-m (5.5 ft) Rexnord standard cone crusher. Product from this crusher joins the -50 mm (-2 in.) screen undersize and is conveyed to a 136-t (150-st) surge bin. Three hydraulically driven belt feeders deliver ore from the ore bin to three 2 x 6 m (7 x 20 ft) Link Belt single-deck tertiary screens fitted with 6 x 25 mm (0.25 x 1 in.) slotted polyethylene screens. Screen undersize - -6 mm (-0.25 in.) rock - is conveyed to a 3.6-kt (4000-st) ore storage bin. Screen oversize is delivered by way of a conveyor to a 91-t (100-st) surge bin. From this bin, two belt feeders feed ore to two 1.7 m (66 in.) Rexnord Gyradisc crushers, which are in closed circuit with the tertiary screens. Design features include magnetic protection for tramp iron removal and sloping floors and pump sumps for ease of clean up. Dust scrubbers keep the working environment clean and in compliance with state dust emission regulations. Grinding Two 1 x 4.5 m (3.5 x 15 ft) belt feeders deliver ore from the fine ore bin to a conveyor belt that feeds it to the 5 x 7 m (16 x 22 ft) Allis-Chalmers ball mill. The conveyor belt is equipped with a Merrick weightometer. This controls feed rate to the ball mill by speed control on the hydraulic motors driving the feeders. The 2.6 MW (3500 hp) powered mill grinds 3.6 kt/a (4000 stpd) to an average grind of 85% -75 µm (-200 mesh). The mill is in closed circuit with four 660 mm (26 in.) Krebs cyclones. Three of these are normally in operation while one is a standby. Warman pumps feed the cyclones through a cyclone distribution manifold. The cyclone underflow returns to the ball mill, which has a 300% average circulating load. Mill discharge pH is 11, and that is obtained through pebble lime addition to the feed belt. Cyclone overflow is sampled using a Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampler. It then flows to a 27-m-diam (90-ft-diam) Eimco thickener. Thickener overflow is returned to the grinding circuit, while underflow at 50% solids is pumped to the leaching circuit. Grinding-circuit design features include a steeply sloped floor for ease of clean up, an open area over the pumps for maintenance accessibility, and a ball hopper with a self discharge bottom to speed ball addition. Other features include a mill liner handler and an air clutch that connects the mill motor to the mill.

INTRODUCTION Shaft sinking represents a relatively small proportion of the activities involved in mine development. Because of this limited utilization, shaft sinking has been one of the most difficult functions to mechanize. Although shaft machines (muckers) were introduced more than 30 years ago, the first machines were low-capacity units, and machines of this type did not gain wide acceptance by the mining industry until the late 1950s. However, the increasing depth of underground mines and the es¬calating costs of labor have increased the benefits obtain¬able from high-speed shaft sinking. The result has been a growing need for high-capacity shaft machines. Most of the machines available at the present time have been developed by modifying existing equipment to increase the payload capacity and performance. AVAILABLE SHAFT MACHINES In general, shaft machines may be classified accord¬ing to the types of digging mechanisms and the mecha¬nisms of operation. The available digging mechanisms include clamshells, cactus grabs, front-end buckets, and backhoes. The mechanisms of operation can be classified as either pneumatic or hydraulic. Selection Criteria For efficient operation, the primary consideration in selecting a shaft machine is its capacity. The minimum capacity of the machine should match the capacity of the hoisting system at the ultimate depth of the shaft. In many cases, two machines may be needed to obtain a sufficient mucking capacity. The shaft dimensions and configuration often dictate the type of machine that may be utilized; for example, an overshot loader does not work well in a circular shaft that has a diameter of less than 5.5 m (18 ft). Similarly, a single Cryderman mucker is not suitable for a large-diameter shaft, nor is it applicable where very high sinking buckets are to be used. Other factors for consideration include the degree of material fragmentation, the abrasiveness of the rock, and the amount of ground water that is inter¬sected. Machine Descriptions Riddell Mucker: The Riddell mucker, illustrated in Fig. 1, was first introduced in 1948. This is one of the most common shaft machines in the medium-capacity range. The Riddell mucker consists of a hoisting and traveling mechanism that operates a clamshell suspended on cables. The early machines operated with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) clamshell and had an hourly capacity of approximately 27 t (30 st). This type of shaft machine has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Essentially, the Riddell mucker consists of standard components, such as the pneumatic tugger hoists that operate the clamshell. The carriage is suspended on rails that also serve as the blasting set, located immediately below the shaft timbers. To effectively position the clam¬shell in the shaft, the operator controls the carriage travel by means of wheels that are driven by a pneu¬matic motor. The Riddell mucker most commonly is used in rec¬tangular timbered shafts. However, some units have been installed with circular rails, allowing them to work in circular concrete-lined shafts. A popular practice with many Riddell muckers is to increase the capacity through the use of larger clamshells, often ranging up to 0.76 m3 (1.0 cu yd), in conjunction with more powerful tugger hoists. In some large rectangular shafts, two Riddell units have been used side by side to achieve a sufficient capacity. Cryderman Mucker: The Cryderman mucker, illus¬trated in Fig. 2, is another common shaft machine in the low- to medium-capacity range. Developed in the early 1950s, it also has gained wide acceptance throughout North America. Equipped with a 0.3 m3 (10 cu ft) bucket, the Cryderman mucker has an hourly capacity of approximately 23 t (25 st). The Cryderman mucker is operated entirely by means of pneumatic cylinders and a pneumatic telescopic boom. The boom is suspended from a sectional frame¬work that is usually located at one end of the shaft. The framework or headframe can be suspended from an independent hoisting system located either on the sur¬face or in the shaft. In large shafts of either rectangular

We define a specialized mineral market as follows: Specialized markets occur where a low volume of a given mineral is used to convey a large benefit to a specific product. Sales of these value added minerals to small markets generally require a different marketing approach than bulk or commodity markets for traditional minerals. Specialized markets are differentiated by several characteristics as listed in Table 1. [Table 1-Characteristics of Specialized Markets 1. Long-term sample evaluation 2. Small volume markets 3. Highly controlled properties 4. Customized specifications 5. Technical selling effort] Many of the specialized markets require long term evaluations before sales can be made. This can vary greatly depending on the type of industry and ultimate end-use of the final product. In some cases, complete evaluations may take from several weeks to years. Length of sample evaluation has no relationship to size of market. That is, the total market may be quite small or fairly large (e.g. from a few hundred pounds to a few million pounds). Uniformity of value added minerals from lot to lot is an extremely important characteristic for these markets. Variations that are of no consequence to one industry (or application) cannot be tolerated in another. This has led to customized specifications and test procedures for specific markets and applications. Because of the greater uniformity and customized specifications, the need for greater technical selling effort is required. This is particularly true in the initial developmental phases and contacts as well as in maintaining the account after the initial order. A small entrepreneurial organization can be used to advantage to achieve goals of sales and profit to these types of markets. The large commodity or bulk producer's sales and marketing organizations are not ordinarily equipped to give the necessary service or technical assistance to the specialized markets. The organization usually required for this type of marketing is given in Table 2. [Table 2- Specialized Marketing Organization Requirements 1. Flexible approach to technical and marketing problems 2. Technically competent management] In developing specialized markets, a flexible approach to both technical and marketing problems is necessary in understanding the needs and requirements of the industry and the applications involved. This flexibility is also helpful in adapting existing products to new market areas. Having knowledge of a range of industries as broad as possible can be very helpful. It often happens that a product developed in one area or industry can lead to its application in a different area with excellent results. Laboratory assistance for a wide range of tests and test procedures is an important asset in any development program for specialized markets. Laboratories can also assist in competitive evaluations. Marketing expertise and a management with some degree of technical understanding are necessary in to assign proper cost/ benefit ratios to a proposed new product or application of existing products. This is important since the total market volume can be small and the time required for initial contact to first sale can often be lengthy. Also, management's technical and marketing expertise is required in evaluating all possible options that can be considered viable when an application is presented. Once an organization of this type is in place, it is then possible to determine the needs of the marketplace, including when various minerals might have to be customized to fill those needs. There are generally two methods of marketing, as noted in Table 3. [Table 3- Method of Marketing 1. Product Driven -Develop a product with certain desirable properties and try to find a market to utilize those properties. 2. Market Driven -Know market well enough that when a need arises, it is possible to identify a product that will satisfy the need.] These approaches are not mutually exclusive and can be used at the same time. Marketing a value added mineral generally requires the "market driven" approach. Hence, the importance of a knowledgeable management as outlined above. To determine where needs and opportunities exist, several approaches can be used. Table4 lists some of the methods employed.

At the beginning of the previous chapter, variation in the types of room-and-pillar stopes were briefly identified so that the reader could begin to understand the extensive application of this mining system. These same variations will be reviewed and elaborated upon in this chapter while discussing the methods by which the material is extracted. FULL-FACE SLICING BY DRILLING AND BLASTING When the entire mineralized thickness is taken in one pass of mining, it is known as full-face slicing. There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the back. Theoretically, there is no limit as to how high the face could be in a single pass. But there are practical limitations to equipment size, pillar stability, and control of local loose slabs on the face, roof, and pillars that dictate current practices. The range of face height of the 15 typical room- and-pillar mines covered in Table 8 (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) from the Dravo report, 1974 was 1.7 m (5.5 ft) to 9.8 m (32.1 ft), the average being 5.2 m (17.1 ft). In the Gaspe copper mine, Murduchville, Que., the drill jumbos were constructed with an extendable tower for full-face mining up to 15.2 m (49.9 ft) if necessary. However, a more common practice at that mine is to take the ore in multiple slices (Hall, 1959). In many metal mines the normal practice when starting stoping is to drive a single development drift into the ore zone a distance that will allow at least four or five rooms to be opened on each side of the initial drift. Since this opening will probably serve as the main haulage drift, it should be kept as straight and as level as possible. As to the other criteria for the stope developments, it might be well at this point for the mine planner to review the remarks presented earlier (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) on drifts, entries, and crosscuts for production. After the initial drift is driven, it should be slabbed to the full room width if it is not that wide already. Next, the future pillars should be marked on the ribs and the rooms driven between them. If the ore extends beyond the length of the initial drift and is to be mined in the normal sequence of mining, care should be taken in a random room-and-pillar system to see that the extension of the initial roadway remains straight. If pillar "spotting" is left to the shift foreman or to the miners, they probably will not realize the importance of maintaining a uniform pillar line next to the roadway, and of keeping the line straight. Invariably, a pillar will end up in the middle of the future drift extension resulting in a "dogleg" in a possible main haul- age road. While this error is not catastrophic, too much weaving in and out of pillars will certainly slow down future production haulage and needlessly increase costs. Face or Breast Drilling and Blasting Practices To drill and blast the initial advances into the rock, usually some form of cut pattern must be used. In room-and-pillar mining, when a pattern is drilled in a face and that face is the only exposed surface to which all of the rock must be broken, the pattern is known as a "face round" or "swing." The face to which the rock must be broken is referred to as a "free face." Thus the most common way to advance a room into virgin rock with only one free face is by drilling swings. If, after breaking around a pillar, taking down back, or taking up bottom, there is a second (or third) face exposed, a group of holes drilled nearly parallel to a free face and breaking to it is known as a "slab round" or "slabbing." In some mining districts it is also known as "slashing." Obviously, because two faces exposed offer less resistance to fragmentation than a single face, slabbing requires less drilling and fewer explosives than required to break the same tonnage with the same degree of fragmentation with swings. Many, if not most, of today's pollution liability claims are related to events ("occurrences") that happened in the past. This fact creates an opportunity to obtain a large amount of insurance coverage at essentially no cost. Furthermore, in many cases, this insurance coverage is readily available. Scenario #1 For some 15 years, an underground gas tank has had a slow leak. The leak has now been discovered because the gas has contaminated nearby wells. As a result, an expensive $1 million cleanup is required. In addition, a liability suit has been filed for damages due to the contamination of nearby wells. Consequently, legal expenses are being incurred. Are all of these actual and potential costs insured? Obviously, if you have a pollution liability policy in place, the above costs will probably be insured. I say probably because business liability policies are not uniform. But, what if you don't have a pollution liability policy and what if your current general liability policy excludes all pollution liability (as most of them do today)? Under these circumstances, it first appears there is no insurance for this $1 million cleanup and liability suit. But this is probably not the case. You may well have insurance coverage, and you may well have much more insurance coverage than you ever expected. And, the insurance that I'm referring to is already in place. You simply need to find it and learn how to use this insurance - I'm referring to your old policies. In many cases, old liability insurance policies provide coverage for claims made today, because these policies were written on an "occurrence" basis of coverage. In fact, most still are written this way. This means that the insurance policy covers bodily injury or property damage liabilities (as defined in the policy) arising out of' "occurrences" or accidents that happen during the policy period regardless of' when the claim for damages is made. Therefore, for insurance purposes, the key question is: when did the "occurrence" take place? If someone falls and breaks a leg, that is clearly an "occurrence." The broken leg occurrence is, therefore, insured by the liability policy that was in existence at the time of the fall - regardless of when the claim or suit is filed, if ever. However, the answer to this question is seldom an easy one when you are looking at a pollution claim. In our scenario, the tank had a slow leak over 15 years, but property damage was not discovered until now. The question of when the "occurrence" (as defined in the insurance policy) took place has been litigated and continues to be litigated in many courts across the country. But, most often the answer has been that, for insurance purposes, the "occurrence" is the entire period that the tank was leaking (15 years), even though the contamination to the water was not discovered until 1987. This means that the person or company that is insured can potentially use all of its general liability policies (if they are "occurrence" policies, and most were), which were purchased during the 15 years from 1972 until 1987. And, these policies will potentially insure all of the claims and related exposures that arise out of this leaky underground gas tank. Scenario #2 In our first scenario, the claims and expenses were insured by past general liability policies because the claims arose out of events in the past, which, in turn, caused damage. Let's look at another example. In this scenario, Company XYZ has received a request to help clean up a landfill site because 10 years ago, XYZ dumped some toxic substances at the site, which was totally legal at the time. XYZ has not dumped anything at the site since this time. Nevertheless, XYZ is now being required to contribute $2 million to the cleanup of this site. In this scenario, if you had purchased "occurrence" general liability policies 10 years ago, these 1977 policies would (potentially) apply to the current $2 million cleanup claim. And, the reason is that the "occurrence" leading to the 1987 claim took place in 1977.

First Majestic Silver Corp’s La Encantada Silver Mine is a producing mine with a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per day. The La Encantada team is currently constructing two small-scale caving mines, including the San Javier breccia caving mine. The new mine is constructed within a mineralized breccia body composed of clasts of varying sizes and with very poor rock quality. Due to this poor rock quality, primary and secondary supports are required to support both the development and production stages. Since the proximity of the new mining levels to existing old workings, correct selection of the support system and proper production controls, instrumentation, and monitoring are very critical to maintain the stability of the pillars and fortification elements. An increased ground deformation due to the load transfer during the production stage is expected. This report reviews the primary and secondary support elements used in the different stages of mining, the monitoring of ground deformation, and the steps taken to analyze and visualize the collected data in order to enable the geotechnical team to manage caving stress and maintain pillar stability. INTRODUCTION First Majestic Silver Corp. (“First Majestic”) is a Canadian mining company focused on silver production in Mexico that operates six producing silver mines, including La Encantada Silver Mine (“La Encantada”). First Majestic acquired La Encantada in 2006. La Encantada is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Coahuila, in northern Mexico, in the municipality of Villa de Ocampo. The mine lies in the northern part of the Sierra Madre Oriental physiographic province. The mine location is shown in Figure 1. La Encantada is a producing mine, with a mill processing capacity of 3,000 tpd, and a 4,000 tpd capacity cyanidation leaching circuit equipped to process fresh underground ore and old tailings amenable to be reprocessed. The mine is currently employing several mining methods, including overhand cut and fill for narrow veins, small mantos, and other minor deposits. A subset of caving methods are applied on the larger, but weak, mineral deposits, such as at the San Javier breccia and La Prieta breccia. La Encantada consists of vein, manto, breccia pipe, and chimney deposits with concentrations of silver, lead, iron, and zinc in oxidized mineralization enclosed by calcareous sedimentary formations of Cretaceous age. At deeper levels, there is sulphide mineralization in skarn with zinc and silver concentrations associated with a granodiorite intrusion.

"Managing slurry is a constant challenge for mining operations. Since slurries are not uniform, the challenge is complicated by varying rheology, velocity, temperature and pressure, all of which affect how the slurry moves through the pipeline and how destructive it is to the system it is flowing through. Picking the right equipment from the outset — the right size pipe, the right size pump and the proper valves for the application — allows mines to operate more efficiently. Better valve designs deliver multiple benefits — they can lower the cost of operations, reduce the amount of maintenance and associated downtime required and are better for the environment. Historically, modulating systems have used ball, plug and pinch valves to manage the flow of slurry, but each of these alternatives has limitations. Ball valves require ceramic lining in order to delay wear, and once a ball valve does wear, the entire valve must be replaced. Similarly, plugs in plug valves should be coated to perform in control systems, and whole valves must be swapped out upon wear. Pinch valves are expensive and only require replacement of the sleeve. However, sleeve replacement involves an extremely arduous process in which the valve is completely taken apart.Traditionally, designers have avoided using knife gate valves (KGV) in modulating systems because KGVs have not been able to hold up under the harsh operating conditions. The throttling that is required in some of these processes rapidly fatigues conventional KGVs, rendering them useless and in need of replacement. Fortunately, innovative design changes have the potential to change established views.Breaking new groundRecognizing the need for improved components, Victaulic took on the challenge of designing a valve that could withstand abrasive slurry systems for a much longer period of time. The first step in this process was to talk to miners, maintenance personnel, process engineers and operators in the field about the limitations of current offerings and then determine design specifications for an ideal replacement.Many of the responses to these inquiries were very similar and reflected challenges with current operations; the primary objective was to find a valve that would be lighter and cheaper than the valves currently in use. In theory, a lighter valve would be easier to replace, and since replacements need to be performed frequently, a cheaper valve seemed like the right idea."

"The increasing demand for underground works in urban centers, and in particular the need to build undercrossing tunnels, requires constant evolution in building techniques in order to achieve success and safety. In the case of Brasilia, capital of Brazil, in order to preserve an important avenue (Eixo Monumental), where are located many historical monuments, the construction of a tunnel was envisioned as an option to interconnect the National Stadium (on one side of the avenue) to the Convention Center Ulysses Guimarães (on the other side). The excavation design is comprised of a coverage smaller than one diameter, height of 7.5 m, width of 9.0 m and length of 25 m. In order to enable a negligible influence on the avenue’s usage, the structure is designed as a portico system composed of pipe canopy. In this context, this study presents the portico analytical solution computed with the aid of the software Mathematica and a numerical solution using the software ABAQUS. INTRODUCTION Undercrossing tunnels are increasingly common in urban centers as alternative roads or as access to underground works of large dimensions (stations and parking lots). The geomechanical conditions of the soil mass, not always favorable, and the low distance between tunnel’s ceiling and the surface require intense treatment of the soil massif and execution of a rigid support system. The importance of the road just above the undercrossing tunnel emphasizes the need for a highly competent monitoring system because existing structures require minimum allowable displacement and do not allow the interruption of traffic. The soils that are excavated for the construction of undercrossing tunnels are composed, in most cases, of layers of fill and / or soft soil or weak rock, showing stability problems when subjected to tunneling operations. The combination of low coverage and week ground is solved by soil improvement techniques and strengthening of the excavated cross-section with further advance with the so-called New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Another option is to build structural frames that support the surface. In this research, and based on the context of a case study, we propose the study of the construction technique comprising a portico structure composed of pipe canopy. For this paper, the technical standards used are the Brazilian ones as the case study refers to this country."

"Recent government initiatives and commercial activities have targeted asteroids for in-situ characterization, manipulation, and possible resource extraction. Though emergent technologies may be effective for such undertakings, uncertainties remain concerning the effects a space environment may have on the mechanical behavior of rocks. Various non-destructive rock characterization techniques can empirically predict in-situ rock strength on Earth; however, these techniques must be adapted to account for unique space conditions. In order to mimic one element of a space environment, various rock samples were evaluated after prolonged exposure to low temperatures ranging from -75°C to 0°C. Tests included uniaxial compressive strength, Schmidt hammer, and ultrasonic pulse velocity, while rock types included shale, limestone, and chalk. This data was used to generate a temperature correction for the non-destructive methods and evaluate the accuracy of these methods in predicting strength values. Overall, these results provide insight on the mechanical behavior of rocks at low temperatures and may be used to design robust systems needed for asteroid rock characterization INTRODUCTION NASA and various commercial entities have recently targeted near-Earth asteroids for exploration and scientific investigation to better understand their in-situ properties, mechanical characteristics, and formative processes. In particular, NASA’s Asteroid Initiative encompasses several studies and mission plans that will enable future investigations while vetting technologies that can be applied to deep space exploration. One component of the Asteroid Initiative is the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM). This multi-stage space mission proposes to rendezvous a robotic spacecraft with a large near-Earth asteroid. Upon approach and after landing, the spacecraft will prospect the surface and identify a multi-ton boulder (up to 5 m in its largest dimension) suitable for capture. The robotic spacecraft will engage the boulder, remove it from the parent asteroid, and return the sample to a controlled lunar orbit. Once the asteroid mass is in stable orbit around the moon, astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft will engage with the retrieved asteroid for manned exploration that will include sample collection and geologic prospecting. Launch plans for the ARM robotic craft are expected as early as 2020, and manned explorations of the asteroid mass in lunar orbit are expected to follow sometime in the mid-2020s (NASA, 2015). Overall this mission will demonstrate NASA’s ability to intersect, manipulate, and redirect an extraterrestrial body, while supplying scientific information that is relevant for planetary defense and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) applications."

The calculation of open pit operations' capacities has been the subject of many studies using computer simulations. The common problems of simulation are that if one desires a realistic picture of an operation the programming work becomes long and expensive and that the program requires a large computer and long time to run. The method presented in this paper overcomes these problems by using a straightforward calculation procedure. It is based on the queuing theory's simple formula for waiting time in a closed circuit and uses a system of correction factors, which reflect the loading, travel, and dumping times' relative variabilities and which have been found by 1) mathematical analysis and 2) simulations of basic circuits. The method includes the main parameters of the operation: numbers, sizes and operational availabilities of trucks, shovels and dumping point, distribution of the production over shovels, trucks' loading, travel (loaded and empty) and dumping times as well as their variabilities, shift's composition. The procedure models: the average duration of a complete truck cycle during stationary and non-stationary periods during the shift as a function of the number of trucks in the circuit, the composition of the average 100% operated shift, the simultaneous probabilities of operationally available shovels and trucks and the distribution of shovels and trucks according to production and cycle times. The procedure can be programmed for a small computer and requires only short computing time, which makes extensive studies of various parameter combinations practical to carry out. The development of the method is an extension of previous work by Morgan and Peterson {1}, who by simulation established the relation between the match factor (which is the ratio between the sum of one loading time pr truck in the circuit and the complete net cycle time) and the shovel's efficiency, and by Hayes, Splaine and Whitaker {2}, who established this relation from a large number of observations in the Nchanga pit in Zambia. The present method establishes this relation by a straightforward calculation procedure. Theoretical solutions to some situations are found in the litterature on the queuing theory. The papers {3},{4} and {5} give solutions to situations, which fall outside those encountered in the shovel-trucks circuit. These solutions together with simulations of in-termediary situations have been used to establish an interpolation procedure for the correction factors to be applied to the waiting time formula in order to cover the situations encountered in practice.

"In March 2013, the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County began final design of the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) Effluent Outfall Tunnel project. The new, approximately 7-mile, 18-ft internal diameter tunnel will provide additional capacity and redundancy for the existing 8- and 12-foot diameter tunnels, which were built in 1937 and 1958, respectively. Connections to an existing, active 14-foot arch force main and four existing ocean outfalls ranging from 5- to 10-foot diameter are required. This paper will present geological features for the project, and details of the proposed post-tensioned tunnel liner and associated structures. INTRODUCTION The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) are 23 independent special districts serving approximately 5.3 million residents in Los Angeles County. Seventeen of the districts that furnish sewerage services to the metropolitan Los Angeles area are signatory to a Joint Outfall Agreement that provides for a regional, interconnected system of facilities known as the Joint Outfall System (JOS). The JOS service area is shown in Figure 1. The JOS serves an area that encompasses 73 cities as well as unincorporated territory and parts of the City of Los Angeles. The JOS provides wastewater collection, treatment, reuse, and disposal for residential, commercial, and industrial users, and it includes seven treatment plants, the largest of which is the JWPCP, located in the City of Carson. Currently, secondary treated effluent is conveyed through two 6-mile long parallel tunnels, 8- and 12-feet in diameter, from the JWPCP to a manifold structure located at Royal Palms Beach, near White Point on the Palos Verdes (PV) Peninsula, from which four seafloor outfalls extend offshore. The two main outfalls, 90- and 120-inches in diameter, extend approximately 1.5 miles offshore and discharge at a depth of approximately 200 feet below sea level. The other two outfalls, 60- and 72-inches in diameter, are used for additional capacity during heavy rain events and extend a shorter distance offshore and discharge at shallower depths. A schematic of the existing system with the proposed tunnel and structures is shown in Figure 2, and the proposed 18-ft diameter tunnel alignment is shown in Figure 3. Both existing tunnels and main outfalls are required to be in service at all times."
