"INTRODUCTION Many major cities in the United States have a combined storm water and sanitary sewer network. Regular rainfall overwhelms the system capacity and results in millions of cubic meters of untreated sewage being dumped into local waterways. One legally mandated solution includes several kilometers of large diameter shallow or deep rock or soil tunnels, a pump station as well as associated collection sewers, diversion structures and drop shafts. In this paper, the basis for design of different system elements including the drop shafts and pump station is explained in detail. Common construction methods used for different type of shafts including tangential vortex and baffle plunge, and also pump station alternatives comprising cavern or various shaft configurations are discussed. DIFFERENT TYPES OF PUMP STATIONS The dewatering pump station serves as the heart of any deep CSO tunnel system and is critical to the goal of reducing CSOs by providing a controlled release of the stored tunnel volume to the wastewater treatment plant. As the major mechanical component of the project, the station will require the greatest attention by operations and maintenance staff. Designing a durable and easily operated pump station requires addressing some major challenges, including the following: • Longevity – equipment, materials of construction, and station environment • Controlling odors • Safety for operators and maintenance personnel • Easy access to equipment • Protection from hydraulic surges Location. Owners face a fundamental decision relative to the location of the pump station, which will affect how these challenges are addressed. The pump station can be built within the tunnel launch shaft or within its own dedicated shaft. This decision is driven by cost and schedule. Use of the tunnel launch shaft may provide owners cost saving opportunities by not having to construct a separate pump station shaft. However, this will likely extend the pump station construction as much as two years until the tunneling has been completed. Furthermore, delays to the tunneling operation would delay the pump station construction work, potentially leading to delay claims. For this reason, it has been more common to utilize a separate pump station shaft on recent CSO tunnel projects (Nasri et al. 2015)."

The Tunnel of Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri, spanning 6.05 miles, will be Latin America’s longest road tunnel, is currently under construction in Colombia’s Antioquia Department with a single bidirectional tube connected to a parallel rescue tube through multiple cross-passages. The study faces challenges in implementing the prescriptive semitransversal ventilation system due to design restrictions. Different ventilation concepts are eplored to nd the most suitable system for regular operation and re scenarios. A quantitative ris assessment evaluates each alternative system and identies the longitudinal ventilation system, accompanied by ris mitigation measures, as the safest choice, since it surpasses the prescribed semitransversal ventilation concept.

Stoppings are necessary ventilation control devices for effective air distribution underground. However, one of the major problems underground mining has is that every stopping is a potential leaking source. Since air always flows from a point of high pressure to one of lower pressure, and the total pressure at every point in intake airways is higher than that in the return airways, air will always tend to leak from intake to return (Tien, 1996). In many mines, less than half of the air entering the mine actually gets to the working areas; the rest of it simply short-circuits directly to return airways through leaky stoppings instead (Timko and Thimons, 1983). Leakage through a stopping occurs because of pressure drops across the stopping and available leaky path in stoppings. Empirical equation has been widely used to characterize the relation the amount of leakage and variables that affect leakage. However the use of this equation requires accurate information for constants which are not always readily available. It is the attempt of this paper to derive an equation similar to the Atkinson Equation that can readily be applied to characterize pressure-leakage relationship for any given stopping.

The Fort Cady in situ borate mining project involves recovery of boron from a mineral deposit located over 1400 feet below the surface. The resource recovery method is being developed using in situ mining technology employing weak acid solution injected directly into the ore body. As the acid contacts the calcium based ore (primarily natural colemanite), the contained borate values are digested as boric acid. This boric acid solution is then pumped to the surface by use of submersible pumps. At the surface the borate values are recovered as a finely divided solid white powder after a series of chemical reactions and precipitations resulting in the production of calcium borate. The refined product is then sold under the trade name CADYCAL 100.TM All environmental permits for up to a production rate of 90,000 tons per year have now been obtained. These permits required an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for federal lands and an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the private portion of the property. Regulatory permitting took over 5 years to obtain all authorizations for this operation. The ore body has an average thickness of 118 feet extending over 273 acres. At a production rate of 90,000 tons per year with only a 70 percent resource recovery allowance, in place reserves are sufficient to sustain production for over one hundred years.

The Ortiz Mine is an open pit-heap leach gold operation in central New Mexico processing about 3,100 tonnes (3,400 short tons) per day. It is the initial mining property in the United States developed by Gold Fields Mining Corporation, a subsidiary of Consolidated Gold Fields, PLC. This paper discusses the evolution of the present mining and ore control procedures as adaptions to the characteristics of both the rock being mined and the orebody, and with respect to the fact that mining is done by a contractor.

Genstar's underground mine at Texas, MD experienced a failure of the mine roof and subsequent damage to an underground backfill caused by surface floodwaters. A hydraulic backfilling program was developed in house to stabilize temporary repairs to the mine roof, replace 2300 yards of pneumatically stowed backfill, and complete a permanent repair to the mine roof. A flowable backfill material was developed, tested, and later marketed as the result of experience gained during this project. In addition, Genstar personnel developed backfilling techniques to meet the requirements of the repairs and completed work without the additional expense of non company services or contractors.

Underground mining environments bring occupational health and safety issues with some severe dangers such as mine disasters like explosions. During such events, miners might escape using main access openings, or find a safe haven like refuge alternatives (RAs) to wait and be rescued and evacuated to the surface. In this paper, RAs are explained with their early and current applications. A classification as permanent and portable is explained depending on the conditions and their abilities. This classification is followed by the utilization and survivability of RAs with the requirements and recommendations of the main mining countries. Based on the utilization and survivability constraints, basic human requirements, waiting for a rescue team, and the required physical specifications of RAs during the events are analyzed in detail for various countries with their regulations. Among these, the specification, resistance to the explosion, is discussed in particular, and the studies in the literature are examined in terms of structural deformation. The highest deformed zones, the beneficiation of reinforcing steel components such as stiffeners, and the simulation approaches are investigated through this review.

Over the past several years, Somerset International has successfully installed over 20 patented Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery Systems in the United States, Australia, Canada and Russia. These installations recover between 5 TPH and 40 TPH for the host sites. In addition to the increased revenue from the direct recovery of a recirculating load (Screen Bowl “Insurance”, Direct Recovery vs. Indirect Recovery via Recycle, CPSA 2020), host sites have seen benefits ranging from improved operation of refuse equipment to a reduction in the solids content of the refuse streams. As Somerset has improved ultra-fine coal recovery through the introduction of Sub325® Effluent Flotation and, most recently, the Sub325® Effluent Settler™, the amount of coal that has been recovered from these systems has increased by up to as much as 25%. Many host sites have taken a sense of ownership in the Somerset system and consider it to be a critical circuit in the overall optimal performance of the plant. In the past year, Somerset has taken the initiative to expand upon the capabilities of the Sub325® Fine Coal Recovery System, primarily the Sub325® Solid Bowl Centrifuge, to include Refuse Tailings Dewatering to allow for co-mingled refuse disposal. As slurry ponds and boreholes are becoming difficult to impossible to permit and operate, there is a need for a reliable, low-maintenance, continuous operation that can produce a handleable refuse cake. Refuse tailings disposal applications are by no means limited to coal plants and impoundments. Somerset has successfully tested at iron ore and phosphate locations throughout the world and have begun commercial installations. The ability to dewater -325 mesh material, whether it be coal, coal refuse, iron ore tailings, or something else, is a vital piece of processing capability for the continued production of mining operations across the globe. This paper highlights the success that Somerset has had in the coal industry worldwide as well as the initial successes with phosphate, iron ore, and copper tailings (patent pending).

An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 assays and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.

Leaching has been used since the 1600s on unlined ore dumps and since the late 1970s on lined leach pads for the recovery of metals from mined ore, the latter typically called ?heap? leaching and the former ?dump? leaching. Modern day run-of-mine (ROM) or crushed ore heaps are stacked in controlled lifts on lined leach pads and irrigated with a solvent solution (dilute alkaline cyanide for precious meals, dilute sulfuric acid for base metals and uranium). Conventional lined leach pads store process solutions and any storm water, snow melt and cumulative wet season surplus water by gravity flow to external ponds. Impounding valley leach pads (also known as valley fill heaps) differ from conventional leach pads by storing various combinations of process liquid solution and surplus water within internal ponds by using the interstitial pore volume of the ore. While impounding liquids within the heap is simple in concept, impounding leach pads are more complicated for construction and containment compared to conventional leach pads with external ponds.

The use of low-angle forward light scattering for measurement of particle size distribution has been described previously.1 Laboratory instrumentation using this technology is used routinely in operating plants for quality control and production control.2,3 Extension of the technique to on-line process monitoring and control has also been undertaken in several important areas. This paper will discuss the application of MICROTRAC R systems to the monitoring of particle size in wet slurry processes and dry powder grinding circuits. Examples of existing installations will be given with emphasis on performance and on-line reliability.

The seafloor in the US Pacific OCS and EEZ is enriched to varying degrees in critical and economically important minerals such as nickel, manganese, cobalt, copper, zinc, REY (rare earth elements plus yttrium), titanium, vanadium, antimony, gold, and silver. These mineral deposits take the form of polymetallic nodules on the seabed, cobalt rich ferromanganese crusts on seamounts and ridges swept clean of sediment accumulation, and seafloor massive sulfides formed by hydrothermal systems at geologic plate spreading centers and volcanic margins. Each of these mineral deposits form on or near the deep ocean seafloor where water depths are typically 4000 m to 5500 m and on the seamounts and volcanic arcs that rise from these depths. Commercial interest in deep sea mineral deposits and the potential for collecting or mining them began in earnest in the 1970s but has been heightened in the last 20 years as the international framework for developing these minerals in International Waters has matured that has coincided with forecasted rapid rising demand for minerals to supply energy and manufacturing needs for the green economy. Compilation reports published by academia, government, and private companies are reviewed to assemble data and assess the prospects for deep sea marine minerals in the US Pacific OCS and EEZ. Key compilations were made by the Circum-Pacific Council and USGS in the 1980s and 1990s. These, together with recent (2023) efforts by USGS to compile geochemical data from USGS affiliated marine research sampling cruises from the 1980s and 1990s, historical data maintained by NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), and recent publicly disclosed results from ISA contractors are used to inform the known occurrence and prospectivity for polymetallic nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts, and seafloor massive sulfides in the US Pacific OCS and EEZ.

For more than fifty years Walter Kidde & Company, Inc. has engaged in the development and manufacturing of both fire suppression and detection equipment. Our initial work for the mining industry centered around dry chemical extinguish-ing equipment for mine haulage cars. To fulfill this need, Kidde engineered and developed a manually activated dry chemical system to provide protection for the wheel wells, cable reels, and motor compartments on various pieces of underground mining equipment. The next phase of mining operation fire protection for Kidde was the area of detection and automatic fire suppression for conveyor belt heads. Early in 1970, a field evaluation program and belt head demonstration unit was taken to 10 areas throughout West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. This extensive field program was a joint effort with National Mine Service Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The objectives of this program were to study mine hazard problems and to determine further requirements of mine operators. The resulting belt head detection system centered around our Continuous Strip Thermistor Core heat detector in conjunction with a Kidde stored pressure dry chemical extinguishing system. Continuous Strip detection has been in use for a number of years in aerospace applications. It has proven flexible and reliable for the rapid detection of overheat conditions and fires in engines of over half the aircraft flying today. The use of Continuous Strip gave us flexibility to protect surface areas over and around the actual conveyor belt head equipment. The nature of Continuous Strip allows us to bend, wrap, and attach the 20 foot long thermistor element over the desired protected points of the belt head. An integral part of the conveyor belt head protection system is the control panel utilizing our comprehensive knowledge of fire alarm control logic. This panel contains supervision circuits which sound trouble signals upon detecting a break in the Continuous Strip; breaks in the wiring to the remote electrical extinguishing activators or to the alarm bell; or loss of primary power. The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. Methane has been a hazard since the beginning of coal mining and has influenced, more or less, every aspect of coal mine design. It is receiving increased attention lately because the rate of methane emission in coal mines is increasing as increasing demand for coal leads to exploitation of deeper seams and the use of higher productivity equipment. Consequently, the government and private industries have directed a great deal of effort towards understanding and solving the problem of methane emission in coal mines. In the United States, Consolidation Coal Company has pioneered research in this area since the early 1950's.1 Currently this work is being expanded by Consol through the Mining Research Division of the parent company, Continental Oil (Conoca), to find new techniques for degasification of virgin areas as well as control of methane in gob areas. Basic reservoir properties of coal seams, such as gas content, reservoir pres-sure, diffusivity, porosity and permeability are better understood today largely through the efforts of the U. S. Bureau of Minese2,3,4 It is possible now to identify and model the basic mechanism of gas emission from coal and to forecast steady as well as unsteady state emission of methane in coal mines with some degree of reliability. Combining this knowledge with any ventilation simulator should often identify problem areas in advance and permit adequate methane control measures to be planned.5 Another recent innovation in methane control is the horizontal hole drilling technology. The U. S. Bureau of 1-1ines and the Mining Research Division of Conoco have independently developed techniques for drilling horizontal holes 300 to 600 m deep6 The Bureau's method employs a rotary drill string while Conoco uses a non-rotating string with a down hole drill motor. It is the authors' view that the latter provides more positive control on bore hole deviation both vertically and laterally and appears to be faster, though somewhat more difficult to operate. In mineral resources, geologic and mining data are acquired, processed, analysed, interpreted and modelled, eventually serving as basis to generate predictions and production plans. This is a complex process, and the resulting predictions are impacted by uncertainties related to the data itself and the processing methods and techniques used. They are also impacted by the subjective decisions made by the modeler(s) at each step of the way. Knowledge, biases, skills, and prior experience come into play in the long mineral resource evaluation development workflow. It is meaningless to discuss uncertainties without evaluating the associated risks that those uncertainties imply. It is important to quantify and assess uncertainty, and to evaluate and mitigate its consequences. This paper discusses (1) conceptual and practical sources of uncertainty; (2) the utopia of an “objective” uncertainty; and (3) the quantification and public reporting of uncertainty using geostatistical conditional simulations. The objective of this paper is to postulate that the industry is running out of reasons and excuses to ignore uncertainty and risk in project evaluation. This is done in two parts, with this, the first one, presenting a more conceptual discussion. Part 2 will present case studies from different types of mining projects and operations showcasing the impact that risk assessments can have in a mining project.

The steady growth of the Northwest portion of the United States over the past two decades, and the very rapid development of Northern California, Western Nevada, and Oregon in particular, led the Calaveras Cement Company people to Shasta County, California in 1957. The presence of a large deposit of high calcium carbonate limestone had been recognized for many years, but it required the momentum of an expanding economy to make these long known reserves valuable. This, plus the availability of a reliable supply of fuel in the form of natural gas, and the ready means of shipping the product to the consumer both by highway and railroad, seemed to offer the proper combination to launch a successful venture. The Calaveras Cement Company had been manufacturing cement by the wet process since 1925 at their plant at San Andreas, California. Starting with two small kilns, the plant in Calaveras County started an expansion program in 1945 that ultimately resulted in the plant as it exists today, consisting of five kilns with a combined production of 4.5 million barrels annually.

In recent years, the use of shotcrete, a practice familiar to the mining industry, has been on the increase. This research has come about because of the recognized need for a safe, easy way to line small diameter bored raises (less then 150cm). Up until now, an operator has gone down the raise and applied the concrete lining manually, using the shotcrete method of application. With an automated system, there would be no man positioned in the bore itself. All control functions could be commanded from a central location. Shotcreting in the confined space of a small diameter bored raise presents problems that can be overcome by the application of shotcrete using a remote system.

Mining on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administered lands is affected by Federal laws and regulations requiring the mining industry to plan for the environmental consequences of surface disturbance. Regardless of the requirements for obtaining a claim, permit, lease or contract to mine, a notice or a mining and reclamation plan will be submitted and an acceptable environmental document must be prepared prior to mining. A bond may be required based on the results of the environmental evaluation, public interest and the operator's past history of compliance. In several areas, Federal requirements are different from California's requirements under their Surface Mine and Reclamation Act (SMARA). Therefore, the BLM is negotiating with the State in order to work out problem areas of responsibility and duplication of effort.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.
