The growing production of fly ash with the many attendant problems of economics, disposal and potential uses suggests an urgent need to consider those properties which are basic in its beneficiation. Fly ash is extremely variable and heterogeneous in all respects except its fine size. Because of its production in huge quantities, it becomes significant as a potential raw material. Detailed data are presented describing particle size and shape, density distribution and magnetic characteristics. The major components include combustible residuals, magnetite and silicates. These data are discussed in terms of beneficiation processes and uses, The results of air classification to produce a uniformly fine-sized low combustible product are encouraging. It is proposed that major increases in the future use of fly ash, must involve some form of beneficiation. Both the coal producing industries and the consuming utilities would benefit from increased utilization.

Increasing public pressure and demands from various tiers of government have generated a legislative maze of statutory and administrative requirements facing industries involved in mineral extraction and processing. Each tier, of government has asserted concurrent jurisdiction and threats of harsh measures if industry does not satisfy all requirements. In the field of water pollution control, federal requirements have increased, carrying with them increasing techniques of enforcement - ranging from injunctions through criminal penalties. Federal laws have required that states formulate water quality standards as an adjunct to federal regulation. Florida has reacted with the Water Pollution Control Act of 1967. This act incorporates state water quality standards and permit requirements for any installation constituting a potential source of pollution, and provides for civil sanctions as well as injunctive relief. The federal government has utilized an 1899 law to require a permit for discharges into navigable waterbodies - a term which has been judicially defined to include any watercourse capable, after reasonable improvement, for use in the transportation of waterborne traffic. Failure to secure these permits can result in the issuance of an injunction or civil or criminal penalties. The Corps of Engineers will not issue these permits without the approval of the discharge by state, local and other federal agencies. Air pollution similarly is regulated by a multi-tiered network of laws and administrative standards. Federal regulation has increased from early research support in the 1950's through the development of Air Quality Standards and their enforcement by large fines, injunctions, administrative conferences and public hearings. Florida regulation, under the Florida Air Pollution Control Act of 1967, parallels federal law but grants concurrent regulations, requirements and enforcement tools to local and state agencies. Although previous state regulation was minimal, consisting only of three acts passed in 189 1, 1899, and 1911, in the future the mining industry will have to contend with this increasing network of ecological requirements. It is recommended that the industry take the initiative by involving Florida in the Interstate Mining Compact, as well as seeking the passage of a state reclamation law funded by a severance tax.

Based on the research background of 1303 working face return air roadway in Jinyuan Zhaoxian Mine, Shaanxi Province, a method of determining the reasonable spacing of boreholes is proposed based on the stress transfer degree of coal above and between boreholes, combined with the law of plastic zone and energy evolution by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. After drilling pressure relief, the average daily energy of microseismic events decreased by 70%, and those with microseismic energy greater than 104 J decreased by 99.2%. The research has a strong guiding significance and research value for determining the reasonable distance of borehole pressure relief.

Vertical shaft furnace design and operation have their roots deep in antiquity. There is substantial evidence to indicate that iron was reduced from its oxides to serve mankind's needs long before recorded civilization - - actually prior to 3500 B .C. For at least 5500 years man has been matching wits with Nature to find better methods of extracting this most common, yet essential, metal from her, grasp. And, during nearly all of this period, the vertical shaft furnace has played a principle role in this dramatic struggle.

In surface mining for coal, common practice for the disposal of preparation plant refuse is to bury it. As with surface refuse piles, these buried wastes can ignite and can also lead to ground and surface water pollution. Steps to ameliorate these problems have been devised over the years. C and K Coal Company, of Clarion, Pa., the largest Pennsylvania surface mining company, has incorporated all of these steps and added of few, of their own in their latest disposal practice. In addition to layering and compacting, C and K practices selective placement and dilution to minimize longterm problems.

"INTRODUCTIONIn view of a global trend towards urbanization, more and more trunk sewers and combined sewer overflow tunnels (CSO) with medium to large diameters and the corresponding link sewers are currently built and under design. Shielded tunnel boring machines using segmental lining as tunnel support represent an efficient solution for construction of new wastewater and supply tunnels. Especially in the field of sewers, the durability of concrete structures both exposed to any groundwater present on its exterior and to aggressive waste water as well as gases on its interior is a key requirement. Despite thorough research on segmental lining and mechanized tunneling machinery, conventional thermoplastic liners show comparatively minimal progress in terms of practical advancements. This is in contrast with the development of the latest segment embedded high density polyethylene (HDPE) system. Based on experiences achieved, this paper discusses the latest development of an integral protective lining system in respect of material characteristics and its adaptability to both project and customers’ demands. Reviewed performances, as the bondage behavior of the embedded HDPE system at axial stress loads due to acting thrust cylinders during ring build as well as the ability to drain pressurized water behind the embedded membrane, tested at full scale segments, are also presented. The paper is round off by presenting first details of sewer projects endeavoring to utilize this cutting-edge solution for an integral concrete protection, which will be commenced beginning of 2016.CASE HISTORIES ENCOURAGE ADVANCEMENTS Past experience has shown that unprotected concrete surfaces as well as chemical based linings such as coatings, sprayed linings and cured in-place-systems cannot reach the desired life times. Also the fact that in deep tunnel sewer system hardly maintenance is possible, a durable and maintenance free system is required which only can be reached by applying mechanical anchored HDPE (CPL)."

INTRODUCTION Drift design problems in caving operations are a re¬sult of the geologic factors contributing to the overall success of the system, of the engineering factors dictated by economic and technical considerations, and of ore production practices. Combining these factors, a rational underground sup¬port system of rock reinforcement, light steel channel section or welded wire fabric, and shotcrete can be de¬signed based on rock fracturing, rock load, abutment loadings, ground movement, expected repair and desired flexibility. The design concept uses the effect achieved by restraining, reinforcing, and maintaining some of the intrinsic strength of the fractured rock mass composed of interlocked blocks of intact rock and rock fractures. Three different examples of drift support design in hypo¬thetical mines using the caving system are given. Caving is a system of underground mining where ore is extracted by means of gravity after the ore body is allowed to fail by removing support from underneath. The rock mass of the ore body fractures and flows ver¬tically downward to let gravity do as much work as pos¬sible. Caving differs from many other mining systems in that blasting is used only to initiate the rock mass failure by removing the rock supporting the ore but not to break the ore itself. The initial movement of the rock mass dur¬ing failure and the consequent crushing and grinding during the continued movement serve to reduce the ore to particles of a manageable size, with only limited sec¬ondary blasting necessary. The broken ore is extracted from the bottom of the failed rock mass through funnels of some sort pre-excavated in the rock. Ore extraction must continue or the swell of the broken rock will even¬tually fill the cavity and stop further rock mass failure and movement. The excellent general discussion on block caving in the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (Julin and Tobie, 1973) adequately covers the principles and application of this type of underground mining. Many rock mechanics aspects of block caving have been covered by others (McMahon and Kendrick, 1969; Swaisgood, et al., 1972; Mahtab and Dixon, 1975; King, 1946) and will not be reviewed further. Maintaining the stability of production drifts is one of the most troublesome problems plaguing the mine manager in a caving operation. Many factors contrib¬ute to drift support problems, and identifying the causes of instability and producing a reasonable support design are two steps toward achieving stability consistent with the mine plan. This chapter sets forth a technique for the design of support systems for production drifts in caving opera¬tions. The basic support system elements employed are rock reinforcement, welded wire fabric, and shotcrete. Recognized as contributing to the design are the factors of rock load, additional load from mining activity, rock fracture characteristics, repair expected, and flexibility. It must be emphasized that the drift must first be stabilized as for a tunnel, and the additional strengthen¬ing for mining-induced loads cannot contribute to the initial premining stabilization, or the reserve of strength is used up. MINE PLANNING The efficient mine planning engineer not only must satisfy the economic, human, and environmental aspects of his task but must also consider the mechanical con¬sequences of his plan. The problems created for the mine by placing parallel drifts too close, by crossing drifts on different levels with inadequate, if any, separa¬tion, and by installing connections and crossovers in the haulage plan without regard for the effective spans cre¬ated, are only a few of the problems a mine planning engineer can create for himself and the mine. The effect on immediately adjacent mine areas when an area is caved is important to drift design because the removal of vertical support from a rock mass causes the weight of that rock mass to be shifted elsewhere. The adjacent rock mass will carry this load and reach a new equilibrium with the applied stress. The advancing front of stress increase that results from caving (and many other mining systems) is generally called the abutment load and is the increase in stress over the gravity or tec¬tonic stress that already exists, as shown in Fig. 1. Fully mechanized top caving mining of steeply inclined extra-thick seams with variable angles has complex roof rock movement, failure, caving, and filling mechanisms. Moreover, the variable-angle coal seams make rock–equipment stability control challenging. We analyzed rock deformation and failure mechanisms, overburden bearing structures, and working characteristics of supports through physical simulations, field tests, and theoretical analysis of the no. 120210 working face of Zaoquan Coal Mine. Overburden rock movement has distinct regional characteristics, with a large caving height (to the main roof layer) in the upper area, and lower caving height (to the lower main roof) in the lower area. Support loading is regional and unbalanced along the inclined direction. The critical layer of overlying strata migrates, and bearing structures formed by breaking the critical layer exhibit cross-layer generalization along the inclination. The upper region has a cantilever beam structure in the basic roof rock layer; the lower region has an inclined masonry structure with multistage ladders in the breakage basic roof rock layer. Application of a false-inclined working face layout with the tailgate ahead of the headgate and an arc arrangement (radius 28.65 m, arc length 10–20 m) in variable angle areas, and regional control of support working resistance and top-coal caving amounts, control regional failure overburden. Safe and efficient mining was achieved, with the monthly production and recovery rates reaching 344,900 t and 85.86%, respectively. Our results expand the scope of fully mechanized top caving mining and have important theoretical and technological significance.

The United States has traditionally been the world's largest producer and net exporter of phosphate rock and related fertilizer products with the exception of rock exports from Morocco. In recent years, however, U.S. producers have faced increasing competition from operations in foreign countries, leaving the future position of the U.S. phosphate .industry as a leader in the world markets somewhat less certain. This paper will review the U.S. phosphate rock industry in relation to its known demonstrated reserves, its historical and present production and export levels, and its future mining potential. The paper will include an analysis of the availability of phosphate rock in the United States represented by cost-tonnage relationships. The U.S. phosphate rock industry has for decades provided raw materials at reasonable costs to the phosphate fertilizer industry, and the fertilizer products have been made available to both domestic and international markets. Natural soils normally contain low quantities of phosphorus, and cultivation exhausts the available phosphorus through the removal of harvested products. Yields diminish, and it becomes necessary to apply phosphorus to the soil in an amount at least sufficient to compensate for removal. Raising the level of phosphorus also permits nitrogen and potash fertilizer nutrients to be effective and sustain the high crop yields necessary to support increasing food demands. In only a few areas of the world are soils, climate, rainfall, and low-cost phosphate fertilizer available to assure high agricultural yields in successive years. One of these areas is the central United States and south central Canada. By contrast, in the Soviet Union, the weather conditions in farming areas frequently cause crops to either bake or drown in the field. To attempt to counter the effect of weather on production, the U.S.S.R. has increased use of fertilizer and equipment in recent years. The effect of fertilizer on various crops has been documented, and in all cases, improvements in yield and plant development were noted, as was the ability of fertilizer to mitigate the effects of unfavorable climatic conditions. Phosphate resources can be classified as either identified or undiscovered. In the identified classification, we are principally concerned with demonstrated phosphate resources, or those that have been measured or indicated. In the southeastern United States, the phosphate mining areas of Florida and the Carolinas have been explored and drilled extensively in attempts to locate new deposits. The exploration programs indicate that another Florida Bone Valley Formation or North Carolina Pamlico River Deposit is unlikely to be discovered in the southeastern U.S. coastal plain. Phosphate rock deposits of commercial interest in the western United States are located in Montana, western Wyoming, northern Utah, and southeastern Idaho. The deposits are in the Permian Phosphoria Formation with most of the mining activity occurring in Idaho. Although substantial demonstrated resources have been identified, recovery costs and the field's isolation from markets have restricted growth of the industry in the west. The phosphate rock deposits in Tennessee are well known, and it is estimated that about 29 million metric tons1 are potentially recoverable. Undiscovered deposits of brown rock in Tennessee would likely be quite small.

Bessac's presence in Singapore started in 2014 with the construction of the Thomson metro line, which includes 18 miles of twin-bore tunnels and 22 stations split into 17 construction packages. Bessac joint venture was allotted the T219 lot. The works include the construction of a new 660-foot (200-meter) long transfer station, two parallel 19-foot (5.8 m) ID tunnels and a pedestrian underpass. The urban context and the very soft ground stratum imposed to utilize unusual tunneling techniques, from upgrading a slurry TBM to a high-density slurry TBM to launch with very low cover and canopy pipe roofing completed with a MTBM without retrieval shaft.

The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master's theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. Each study concluded separately that geochemical anomalies in the vicinity of the ores justify use of that specific sample type in a geo-chemical exploration program. Bentonite represents one of the main players in the stability of the drilling mud. Its particle size and particle size distribution affect the physical properties of the drilling mud especially the rheological properties. Therefore, a specific particle size distribution was recommended by American Petroleum Institute (API) for use in drilling mud. To clarify the effect of individual size and size distribution, in this study, the bentonite sample was classified into different size fractions. Each size fraction was tested separately in terms of controlling properties such as filtration loss, plastic viscosity, gel strength, cake thickness, and packing density. The effect of each size fraction on the rheological properties of the suspension was correlated to the behavior of the whole particle size distribution in the bentonite sample. The results indicate that the coarser the particles, the higher the rheological properties; in this case, the API mixture is the highest. The filtration loss and cake thickness for the API mixture are lower than that of the individual size fractions due to its wider size distribution due to the filling of voids between larger particles with smaller ones, which lead to bed compaction and consequently lower fluid loss and cake thickness.

The pressure filtration behavior of dispersed and flocculated alumina slurries at high percent loadings is discussed with an objective to determine the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by surfactants that are considered to act by electric and steric stabilizers. The effect of both the ionic and nonionic surfactants was investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and final cake properties are discussed.

An advanced coal preparation plant has been built at Homer City, Pennsylvania, by Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of General Public Utilities Corporation, and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, as an alternative to utilizing flue gas desulfurization technology to meet the Federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources air quality emission regulations of 4.0 lb S02/106BTU for the two (2) existing coal-fired generating station Units No. 1 and No. 2, and a 1.2 lb S02/106BTU for the new Unit No. 3. The coal preparation plant is designed to process 5,200,000 tons of run of the mine coal annually and has a design capability to process 1,200 tons per hour via two (2) equal capacity 600 tons per hour preparation circuits.- The plant is designed to produce multi-product coal streams consisting of a middling product of medium ash and medium sulphur content, which is environmentally compatible to support operation of the two (2) existing generating Units I and 2, and a deep cleaned, low ash, low sulphur coal product capable of environmentally supporting the ambient air quality requirements of the new Unit 3 generating facility. The waste product from the process consists of high ash, high sulphur reject material. The process has the acronym MCCS (Multi-Stream Coal Cleaning System).

It is not yet in general use in the mining and ore dressing fields, since most of the requirements in these areas have been for relatively coarse particle sizes. As the need for finer grinding increases - because of different ores, new products, and new values being sought - jet pulverization will, increasingly, be properly used.

As a result of the Farmington explosion, the U. S. Bureau of Mines commissioned the National Academy of Engineering to a determine what steps could be taken in a short time frame to significantly reduce fatalities as a result of underground fire and explosion in coal mines. Three areas were named by the Academy as having the greatest potential; survival, communications, and rescue. The Bureau subsequently awarded a $3-5 million contract to the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the development of prototype equipment and procedures. These were recently tested in a simulated emergency situation and will be delivered soon. Contractor recommendations for utilization and for further development effort will be studied and appropriate action taken.

The use of an integrated software package to simulate and optimize the performance of mineral processing circuits is illustrated by three examples. Each represents application of the software and associated techniques to optimization of an existing plant. In the first example, a South-western U. S. copper company employs the method to simulate and improve performance in crushing, screening and SAG milling. A second copper producer evaluates equipment changes and flowsheet alternatives in a closed-circuit ball mill-cyclone operation. A Southeastern U. S. aluminum refinery optimizes performance of a dry milling and classification circuit for production of carbon particles used in anode casting. Graphical and tabular data describe the circuits simulated and the results achieved in each example.

A statistically designed pot grate- kiln test program was conducted to determine the agglomeration process variables necessary for increasing the low temperature disintegration resistance (LTD) and reducibility (R40) of magnetite-based Empire acid pellets. The ASTM tumble index and compression strength were to be maintained at an acceptable level. Six process variables, bentonite addition level, preheat time and temperature, firing time and temperature, and cooling rate, were investigated within the constraints of the Empire plant. The bentonite addition level and firing temperature had the largest effect on pellet properties. The results of this program were verified during a pl ant trial. The target firing temperature at the Empire Plant has been decreased for increasing the LTD and R40 of commercially produced Empire pellets

The development of forced aeration as an approach to enhancing copper sulfide leaching is traced from its earliest development up to present day operations using this technology. Both large-scale field tests and commercial operations are covered. The historical portion is preceded by an introductory discussion of the role of air (oxygen) in sulfide leaching. Sufficient aeration may be achieved via naturally induced convective airflow. However, cases are identified where this is insufficient, leading to retardation of the sulfide leach rate. For these situations, forced aeration may be beneficial. The historical portion of the paper focuses on the major field tests that have been conducted in Montana, Nevada and Utah, along with commercial operations in the United States, Australia, Chile and Peru. The paper concludes with some general comments about the applicability of forced aeration, which are based on the information developed to-date.

A longwall coal mine in southwestern Virginia mining the Pocahontas #3 Coal Seam experienced a history of mining-related seismic events. The events were never large enough to cause concern until three major events occurred recording 3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 ML in 2005, 2006, and 2007 respectively. Two of the seismic events generated an air blast which damaged stoppings which fueled a mine fire in 2005 and 2007. The mine responded to the events by narrowing the longwall widths, changing ventilation controls, installing a 7-sensor seismic system around the active panel, and creating a mining hazard map to avoid similar geology in the future. All of the actions taken have prevented seismic activity from impacting mining operations, but it did not prevent other large seismic events from occurring (Van Dyke et al., 2018). In 2016, another large seismic event, measured at 3.7 ML, occurred in the gob that was reported by the local media and recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). While the event did not directly impact mining operations, mine management wanted to know where and under what conditions could large seismic events occur in the future. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) became involved to help understand what conditions precipitated these events so that future mine design could more accurately assess seismic hazards and reduce the risk to mine worker safety. Researchers at NIOSH and mine management created a seismic forecasting map that combined three factors: (1) overburden thickness, (2) sandstone thickness, and (3) the expected caving height of the gob. The criteria were developed based on the geologic data the mine collected from core drilling, e-log analysis, and fiberscope observations. The forecast map was able to provide an accuracy of 72%–85% of events 1.5 ML or greater and 100% accuracy of events that were 3.0 ML or greater based on historical data. The seismic forecasting map was applied to the entire future mining area to show areas where seismic potential could be the greatest based on current mine design planning, ultimately improving the ability of the mine operator to assess the seismic hazards surrounding active and future mining areas (Van Dyke et al. 2018). Following this research, the seismic forecasting map was implemented into the mine’s hazard recognition program and is continuously updated and evaluated prior to mining each longwall panel. This paper will cover in more detail how the seismic and lithologic data was processed and how the mine implemented a new seismic mitigation program based on the forecasting results.
