It is a pleasure to appear on this program and discuss a subject which is of particular interest to me. In my regular duties as Safety Director of Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, I am called on by member companies to discuss matters affecting face ventilation. As a member of the Joint Industry Safety Committee, as I will later describe, I have a part in processing requests for the use of auxiliary fans for face ventilation. The use of auxiliary fans in bituminous coal mines for this purpose came into rather wide use in the late. '20's when conveyor mining was introduced. In this application, the equipment consisted of a chain conveyor with a face chain conveyor parallel to the face on which the coal was loaded by hand and, in turn, was discharged onto the room conveyor and thence to a loading point on the entry at the mouth of the room. Another method was to use a shaker conveyor with a duckbill which was maneuvered across the face of the room from which the coal was loaded and transported by the shaker to the loading point. In either case the equipment did not readily lend itself to driving crosscuts or breakthroughs with the result that rooms were driven to depths of 250 or 300 feet without adequate means of ventilating the face area with the main split of air. It was, therefore, necessary to use other means of ventilating this area as the rooms were being driven and during retreat work if pillars were extracted. Auxiliary fans of the blowing type were utilized for this purpose. They were of very small capacity using small diameter tubing. By the time the room was driven half way to its projected limit ventilation was very poor or practically nonexistent. To compound the problem the fan was usually set up at the mouth or neck of the room and in many cases the intake air to the fan was the return air from the room. It is small wonder, therefore, that there is on record 12 cases where auxiliary fans were given as the cause of explosions. In 9 of these occurrences, arcs or sparks from open-type motors or accessory equipment on these fans were given as the primary ignition source. They fell into such ill repute that in a number of cases they were blamed as the ignition source even though smoking was strongly suspected as the primary cause.

The Cave-In-Rock Flourspar District is located in the northeast part of Hardin County, Illinois and is the most northeasterly occurrence of flour spar of the Illinois-Kentucky Flour spar Area. The occurrence of these deposits is confined to an area about one and one-half miles wide and five miles long parallel to the Peters Creek Fault (Fig. 1) The delineation of several features that may be described as breccia pipes has permitted the definition of the point of ascent of solutions to the host horizon and the lateral spread from these points.

Introduction Operation is underway at the Dutch Creek No. 1 mine of the first US longwall panel to be mined under the cooperative agreement between the US Bu¬reau of Mines and Mid-Continent Resources. The 244-m (800-ft) wide longwall face is part of a multilift longwall demonstration. A 3-m (10-ft) top slice is being extracted from the 8.5-m (28-ft) coal seam. This occurs in an area of the property where the Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B beds have come together to form one seam. This face, longest ever operated in the US, is being worked on an advancing longwall system. During the first months of its operation, this longwall face has been very productive and safe. Mid-Continent Resources operates two coal mines in the Coal Basin, located in the White River National Forest near Carbondale, CO. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. originally opened this property in 1895, and conducted a small mining operation for 10 years on the north rim of the basin and then abruptly shut down. Mid-Continent began operations in 1956, after the Coal Basin fields had lain idle for about 60 years. Operations commenced at the outcrop of the Coal Basin B bed situated at the 3-km (10,000-ft) elevation. At this time, coal was produced from Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B seams in the area. Since 1981, operations have been centralized at two mines, the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the Dutch Creek No. 2, both located in the center of the basin. Since 1981, Mid-Continent has shifted its emphasis to longwall mining as the primary method of production, and each of these mines is equipped with state-of-the-art longwalls using shields as the method of roof support. A 4-km (13,000-ft) long twin-bore rock tunnel is being driven at a lower elevation of 2.4 km (8,000 ft) to intersect the coal seams at depth, as they dip 12° in a westerly direction. This tunnel will enable the company to reduce costs by replacing trucks with conveyor belt haulage (Fig. 1). Mid-Continent began longwall operations in May 1976 with the US's first modern, mechanized advancing longwall face, using chocks. In August 1978, a second advancing longwall face was started. Results from two faces showed that the mining system could be used effectively to manage the difficult conditions encountered in both the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the L. S. Wood No. 3 mines. Unfortunately, low productivity and high costs plagued the company's advancing faces. The problems resulted principally from major equipment failures, poorly designed chocks and face conveyors, and the lack of an efficient, cost effective system for building packwalls. Flushing of rock between chocks and roof control were also major problems. In Sept. 1979, Mid-Continent and the US Bureau of Mines entered into a cooperative agreement to demonstrate the feasibility of mining thick coal seams using the multilift longwall mining method. Two lifts are to be used to mine the 8.5-m (28-ft) thick coal seam in Dutch Creek No. 1 mine. The Bureau provided mining equipment for 180 m (600 ft) of longwall face. This included the shields, face conveyor and drive units, shearing machines, panel belt, and stageloader. As a result of previous experience in advancing longwall mining, Mid-Continent purchased an additional 60 m (200 ft) of face, including roof supports and an additional face conveyor. The Masbate Province, Philippines, has been a gold producer for many years. Several gold properties were profitably operating until the outbreak of World War II in 1941. One of these properties was the Masbate Consolidated Mining Company that at the time showed an impressive production rate of more than 4,000 metric tons of ore per day and one of the lowest milling costs on record in the country at that time. Interesting enough, t was the milling equipment left abandoned at Masbate that gave birth to one of the giant copper producers in ASIA. In 1955, Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corporation started a new operation at its copper property in Cebu with the seven 2.4m 0 x 3m long (8'0 x 10' long) ball mills left abandoned at the old Masbate Gold Mine. Now, 25 years later, Atlas is processing over 100,000 metric tons of copper ore per day through its three copper concentrators, and, the seven old mills are still grinding, copper ores now.

Since the early stages of the project, Goldcorp has used the most advanced technologies available to maximize its value. However, the implementation of optimum mine plans has been challenging to put into practice. This is due to the fact that the mine operation involves more complexity than the plans usually reflect. This challenge is an industry-wide issue that presents opportunities for improvement. This article discusses the mine planning methodologies and procedures used to connect long-, medium- and short-term planning strategies in order to bridge the gap and produce optimum mine plans that can be practically implemented in the field.

Mining steeply dipping coal seams is a difficult task in the mining industry. Prior to 1996, fully mechanized longwall mining methods along the seam strike direction were tried in China and other countries. Due to its larger coal reserve in steep seams, China made more but still limited progresses on mining in such seams than the other major coal-mining countries. In the last two decades, accelerated research efforts have been made to improve the mining technology in steeply dipping coal seams. Based on these works, a dynamic model of ?R-S-F? system under asymmetrical constrains in mining steep seam is established and the theory of strata control and hazard prevention begin to be formed. The key technologies for mining steep coal seams include: global and regional strata control methods in longwall face, methods for the longwall face machines to sustain static and dynamic loads, and flexible protection technology. These theory and technologies have been successfully applied to mining of steep coal seams of varying thickness and hardness, with hard and soft roof and floor, and with high potential of spontaneous combustion in China. In the recent years, the technology has been introduced to Russia, India, Uzbekistan and other countries where steep coal seams are mined.

At that time the financial markets were on the verge of collapse and my presentation described the issues. Unfortunately I was correct, and global markets went into a steep nosedive, creating the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression.In hindsight, there were plenty of signs that this was coming. The Supercycle had created massive new wealth. This wealth was largely invested in the United States due to the country’s political stability and credit worthiness. In 2004, the large investment banks convinced the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) to allow them to triple their borrowing leverage ratios. This made the banks more vulnerable to market volatility. The banks then lent money to NINJAS - people with no income, no job and no assets. Even worse was the fact that these unqualified home owners used adjusted-rate mortgages (ARMs) which they, of course, intended to refinance prior to interest rates rising. These mortgages were then bundled up by the banks and sold to investors as “safe” investment products. The money flowed into these products because the rating agencies gave these instruments high marks. These same agencies earned their fees from the very same banks seeking high ratings. (No conflict there). Private debt exploded and peaked out in 2008.These mortgage products were sold in an unregulated shadow banking system and the ARMs came due. Toxic mortgage default rates skyrocketed and the mortgage-backed securities collapsed in value. This house of cards had a negative feedback loop that accelerated the market crash and resulted in more than $1.5 trillion being lost in the securitization sector, a 47 percent decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, foreclosure rates skyrocketing and housing prices collapsing. The financial markets were in a nosedive."

"SUMMARY The Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project includes a 3.34 kilometer subsea tunnel excavated by TBM with an excavation diameter of 13.71 m. The tunnel will incorporate two road decks, each employing two traffic lines and shoulder with the daily capacity of 100,000 light vehicles. The tunnel alignment crosses full face rock sections with heavily fractured zones due to tectonic events as well as a long central stretch of difficult mixed face and very variable soft ground conditions. The demanding ground conditions and the large diameter in combination with realized face pressures well above 10 bar required a highly specialized and well adapted TBM. The paper describes the project challenges and the related technical solutions incorporated within the TBM design as well as the real site experience. INTRODUCTION In 2013, a 13.71 m diameter Mixshield was manufactured in Germany for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project. The delivery of the TBM in late 2013 was a major milestone for the Istanbul Strait Road Crossing Project, also known as the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Eurasia Project (www.avrasyatuneli.com.tr/en) consists of a 14.6 km route including a 5.4 km tunnel segment in its central part crossing the Bosphorus. The 3.34 km subsea section of the tunnel was excavated in closed mode using a Mixshield TBM. The remaining tunnel length is constructed by sprayed concrete lining (SCL) method followed by a cast in place (CIP) lining or by cut and cover (CC) structures for the TBM transition boxes (Figure 1, right). Other project sections on the European and Asian side consist of upgrading and widening surface access roads towards the tunnel. Conceptual ideas of connecting Asia with Europe via a tunnel crossing the Bosphorus have been around for an extended time and only became realistic towards the end of the 20th century based on significant technical developments in mechanized tunneling. Feasibility studies for a new Bosphorus crossing in 2003 and 2005 confirmed and suggested a road tunnel in its present alignment as the preferred solution. Following an international tender process the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications of Turkey assigned ATAS, a special purpose company formed by Yapi Merkezi (Turkey) and SK E&C (South Korea), to design, build and operate the Eurasia Tunnel Project. The Implementation Contract was signed in February 2011. In 2012, Herrenknecht AG was selected as the supplier for the 13.71 m Mixshield TBM."

Whether drilling through tough clay or breaking rock, or facing the most severe conditions including mixed face ground, perched water and running and flowing sands, working under-ground certainly comes with no shortage of challenges. In an environment where the unknown is faced on a daily basis, tunneling contractors must be able to rely on their equipment to get the job done properly. Not only that, their equipment must comply with two of the highest priorities: safety and efficiency. In addition to being the number one concern, a proven safety record provides additional benefits to a company. A safe work environment serves as a key component to company growth, including the ability to remain competitive in bidding and maintaining higher-level, more challenging projects.

Planned tunnel projects with advanced geotechnical investigations are more frequently being suspended because of changes in funding, politics, or local priorities. Some of these projects are ultimately canceled, some decelerate and stall, some resume after a short pause, and some restart after being mothballed for several years. The restarted project often differs at least slightly from the predecessor project in terms of alignment and design concept. This paper describes approaches to evaluating the quality and completeness of previous geotechnical investigations for a re-activated project, considering technological advances as well as changes in regulatory requirements, contracting approach, and site conditions which may have taken place in the time since the project was suspended.

The rock quality designation (RQD) is a commonly used index for the classification and evaluation of rock mass quality and is widely adopted in mining and geological engineering. The traditional method of obtaining RQD still requires manual measurement of core length and calculation of RQD, which is inefficient. To address this problem, we propose a framework for drilling core image segmentation and RQD estimation from digital images of cores in core boxes based on the deep learning algorithm. The proposed framework is generated by combining the Mask Region-Based Convolutional Neural Networks (Mask R-CNN) instance segmentation algorithm, the U-Shaped Convolutional Neural Networks (U-Net) semantic segmentation algorithm, and the image processing functions of the Open Source Computer Vision Library (OpenCV). To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, seven boreholes in the Xiushuihe vanadium-titanium magnetite mine, located in the Sichuan Province, China, were used as the case study. According to the comparison of the manual measurements and calculations of the cores taken from seven boreholes used to conduct this study, the framework can record the length of the drill cores and calculate RQD within an average error rate of 3.42%, while it saves about 85% of the working time. The results illustrate that the proposed framework enhances the efficiency of RQD calculation while satisfying the engineering requirements.

For gold mines, orebody uncertainty is one of the leading causes of differences between planned and actual production. Geostatistical conditional simulations create multiple equally probable orebody block model realizations which are conditional to the current drilling information and demonstrate the sampled grade distributions and spatial statistics. These simulated block models are key inputs for a stochastic evaluation to show the likely range of grades and cash flows to be delivered by a mine plan. The stochastic evaluation outputs can be used to compare different mine plans in terms of expected values and risks to planned grades, production, costs, Net Present Value (NPV) and other plan metrics. For the McLaughlin gold mine, risk profiles are demonstrated to show how different mine, cut-off and stockpile strategies can reduce risk and improve expected value. The strategies considered were effective in improving expected NPV and reducing or eliminating tonnage uncertainty, but the strategies had little impact on reducing the uncertainty of NPV’s or mill grades. The stochastic evaluation process is also used to compare the risk impact of orebody uncertainty against the risk of not achieving planned mining tonnages or vertical advance rates. Risks for plans created with and without stochastic mine plan optimization are also compared.

"Fine-grained hematite ore can be concentrated by the process of selective flocculation and dispersion, which relies on proper reagent selection and control of water chemistry. While many previous studies have been performed analyzing the effects of different reagents on this process in a laboratory environment, this paper focuses on investigating the water chemistry within the process in a pilot-scale continuous deslime thickener.The pH, sodium concentration, calcium concentration and magnesium concentration were varied to determine their effects on the iron concentrate grade and recovery, and the phosphorus concentrate grade and rejection in the pilotscale selective deslime thickener. The ideal pH for the iron grade and recovery of the process using a starch selective flocculant was found to be 10.5. Phosphorus rejection, however, was increased at lower pH values. Minimization of sodium concentration was shown to improve iron grade, iron recovery and phosphorus rejection. Calcium acted as a nonselective flocculant showing higher iron recovery, lower iron grade and lower phosphorus rejection with increasing concentration. Conclusions could not be drawn from the experiments that varied magnesium concentration.The zeta potential of the solid-liquid interface of particles in each sample taken was also analyzed to show relationships between zeta potential and process performance. In all cases, a maximization of the magnitude of zeta potential correlated with increased iron grade and recovery. This supports the hypothesis that a higher level of dispersion enhances the selective flocculation and separation process.IntroductionThe United States produced 53.2 million metric tons out of the 3,000 million metric tons of concentrated iron ore produced worldwide in 2012 (Tuck, 2013). With this in mind, there has been a large increase in iron ore processing research (Bolen, 2014; Carlson and Kawatra, 2008, 2013; Halt and Kawatra, 2014; Halt et al., 2014; Haselhuhn et al., 2012a,b, 2013a,b; Liu et al., 2014; Manouchehri, 2014; Sandvik and Larsen, 2014; Semberg et al., 2014). Of the 53.2 million metric tons produced, roughly 8 million metric tons of hematite (Fe2O3) concentrate were produced using a process known as selective flocculation and dispersion (Cliffs Natural Resources, 2011). This process is the only economically viable method for concentrating low grade (< 40% Fe) fine grain (< 25µm liberation size) hematite ores. It is scarcely used due to difficulty in controlling the surface chemistry of the ore and high reagent costs (Department of Energy, 2001; Haselhuhn et al., 2013a). The process is highly dependent upon both reagent selection and precise control of the water chemistry during separation. This study shows the dependence of the process performance of a pilot-scale deslime thickener on the water chemistry in the feed slurry."

The Port of Conneaut, the largest bulk material handling and storage facility on the Great Lakes, is using the latest electronic and visual testing devices to augment and enhance its well established computerized preventive maintenance system. The results of this comprehensive program have been impressive. The remaining life of components can be accurately forcast, and replacement can be programmed around operations, resulting in a significant improvement in system availability and reduced costs for the dock operator and its customers.

The demand for sustainable and profitable/efficient projects within the tunneling and other underground engineering sectors grows rapidly. Construction tasks play a key role within the project conduction, whether as primary (tunneling), secondary (e.g., mine securing) or tertiary processes (e.g., workshops). The construction tasks of primary processes create the main structures, such as tunnels, which resemble the main project goal. For the secondary and tertiary processes, the purpose of the task shifts. The main goal is to provide structures, such as the securing of the cavity and workshops, that enable the project and enhance the efficiency of the primary conduction underground. To plan and optimize the conduction of construction tasks underground, whether they are identified as primary, secondary or tertiary tasks, the work preparation can be used. This method, known from the above ground construction, can be adapted and used underground. The approach of a digital work preparation tool combines, connects and adapts the main tasks “choice of procedure,” “logistics” and “site planning.” In addition, the digital tool is connected with digital models (construction, site, surroundings). With the adaption and forward projection of the work preparation, underground constructions (e.g., tunneling) can provide a more sustainable and efficient outcome.

Frontino, a municipality in western Antioquia, Colombia, has more than 200 years of mining tradition. Currently, mining activities are carried out for lode gold using subway tunnels, where the grinding of the material is done in "cocos", whose energy depends on internal combustion engines and ACPM, environmentally polluting and inefficient methods. In accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals as an initiative developed by the UN, different mining methodologies that are aligned with these are constantly being analyzed. This study proposes to eliminate the use of hydrocarbons in artisanal mining, mainly promoting Sustainable Development Goals 7, 9, 11, 12, and 13. This will be achieved through an energy transition to renewable energy sources that take advantage of the topography and water resources of the area, providing advantages to the communities that live there, such as lighting, electricity for cooking, ventilation for mines, etc

IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. has developed ligands, ?amed SuperLig®, which have specific applications in the gold mdustry. These ligands use molecular recognition technology (MRT). One ligand has been developed to selectively recover gold and silver from tailings solutions and from pregnant Merrill-Crowe solutions. Another ligand removes free cyanide, _ th10cyanate, other cyanide species, as well as copper and other base metal cyanide complexes from leached gold-ore solutions. The development of these "species selective'' SuperLig® prod­ucts allows for the more efficient operation of gold recovery processes and opens up the possibility of the economic devel­opment of high-copper gold ores. The resulting gold eluate is a high grade and a high purity stream which will simplify the need for further refming. Engineered systems based on MRT consist of a few unit operations utilizing standard equipment and mate­rials of construction. The process is simple to operate, thereby lending itself to automated modular design, which is both eco­nomic to manufacture and to operate. Test results for the gold and cyanide-copper systems are presented in order to demonstrate the high selectivity and effi­ciency of MRT technology in recovering these species from solution. . IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. (IBC) and Fluor Daniel, Inc. formed a strategic alliance in late 1994. The goal of the alliance is to combine IBC's scientific expertise in the MRT field with Fluor Daniel's engineering capabilities in the metal­lurgical industry. IBC has its headquarters in American Fork, Utah, USA, where research, development and manufacturing are conducted. Fluor Daniel is an international engineering and construction firm with head offices in Irvine, California, USA. Engineering efforts for the alliance are centered in the Fluor Daniel Mining and Metals Operating Company office in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Electronic systems introduced for haulage equipment in recent years probably exceed what mine management is prepared to use. Haulpak trucks alone are equipped with General Electric&apos;s Statex III drive system controls, Detroit Diesel&apos;s DDEC, Cummins&apos; Centry engine management system and the Haulpak Management System (HMS). The future holds promising developments of even more sophisticated electronics that will lead to unmanned truck operation and control. Trolley-assist will finally come into its own due to the importance of environmental issues, as well as the high potential for increased productivity with dramatically lowerfuel consumption. All of these high technology systems do not mean much unless they add value to mining operations. Some of the benefits that can be expected from these systems are reviewed. In the near future, haul truck control and monitoring systems will be fully linked by telemetry to a mine&apos;s dispatch system, as well as to its maintenance management information system. The manufacturer and distributor can also be kept in the communications loop, so that they can better serve customer needs. Portable computers will allow technicians to talk to machine systems to quickly locate a problem, look up service information, check what parts are required and electronically order them.

Introduction Sulfide copper, zinc and iron concentrates are recovered in the 5000 ton per day flotation plant operated by Cities Service Company at Copperhill, Tennessee. The heavy-sulphide ore is first ground to 50 pct. minus 200 mesh and a bulk concentrate floated. The bulk concentrate, over 60 pct. of the ore weight, is reground to 72 pct. minus 200 mesh and then treated in a selective flotation circuit to recover copper and zinc concentrates. The tailing of selective float is the iron sulphide material source for the manufacture of sulfuric acid and iron sinter. The valuable minerals in the ore are chalcopyrite, marmatitic sphalerite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. A typical mineralogical analysis will be found in table 1. A typical material flowsheet will be found in figure 1. Shown in the flowsheet are a scavenger float on the bulk rougher tailing and a copper-talc separation unit. At times a lead-copper separation circuit has been run.
