Many policy issues facing the mining industry and affected communities are at a level of complexity that they can be called ‘wicked’ problems. The term ‘wicked’ in this context is used, not in the sense of iniquity, but rather as social and economic issues highly resistant to resolution. For the resource extraction sector and affected communities there are an array of challenges embedded in the industry’s production and profit paradigm, the remoteness of mineral reserves and affected communities’ expectations of economic benefit and a positive legacy. The mining industry as a whole is dominated by economic, political, legislative and market structures that influence and constrain interactions between mine operations and local communities. For communities, with particular reference to regional Western Australia, intractable problems include the uncertainty of, yet increasing dependence on, a mining economy. Questionable outcomes for local communities include the limited realisation of local employment and business development benefits, and low overall outcomes or low multiplier effects. ‘Wicked’ problems, according to the literature, are best addressed via collaboration. In the mid-west region of WA, with mining and infrastructure construction underway, alliances have formed between mining companies, the major port and rail infrastructure project (Oakajee Port and Rail) and regional and local governance stakeholders. The major impetus for these affiliations is to expedite planning and associated infrastructure development taking into account the lessons from other mineral-led regions. What has resulted is an array of innovative approaches to stubborn problems including planning well in advance of full-scale mining; regionally coordinated procurement; ‘mine ready’ local businesses; and strategic investments in social infrastructure; including community trust funds paid in advance of project delivery. This paper examines these innovative approaches/alliances and assesses their effectiveness in addressing long standing mining/community dilemmas.

"Considering the shortage of lithium reserves, the desirability has been shown of studying the possibility of processing into spodumene concentrates the concentration tailings and low-grade ore reserves at Transbaikalian Mining and Processing Project (ZabGOK). The mineral and chemical composition and the particle size distribution of the mineral feed, separability and recoverability of spodumene have been studied, forming the basis for the development of a concentration process and flowsheet for the studied mineral resource. Prospects have been established for impact ore grinding in a disintegrator, the efficiency of mechanochemical processes has been shown in the separation of quartz and feldspar and the recovery of lithium from concentrates.INTRODUCTION Lithium is widely used in various industries - nuclear power engineering, defense technology, power generation, ceramics, special-purpose glass and other technologies. The increasing demand for lithium and its compounds (lithium carbonate and hydroxide) for use in the manufacture of high-tech products (lithium-based materials for chemical sources of electric power and electrochemical energy) explains the need for establishing a sustainable raw material base (Mohr et al. 2012; Moores, 2007). The main sources of lithium are spodumene pegmatites (Vladimirov et al. 2012; Garret, 2004), brines (salars), and hydromineral materials (Garret, 2004; Zeng and Liu, 2009; Kotsupalo and Ryabtsev, 2008). However, in view of the absence in Russia of extractable hydromineral resources of lithium, the practical significance of spodumene ores remains decisive. Russia controls some of the world’s largest reserves of rare-metal pegmatites holding over 8 million tons of Li2O: approximately 7 million tons on the Kola peninsula and 1 million tons in the Sayan mountains. The main lithium mineral in pegmatites is spodumene LiAlSi2O6 containing 8.1% Li2O. It can be efficiently recovered by gravitational concentration and flotation. However, most of the deposits are located in remote areas and none is currently developed. In this connection, special research is focused on technogenic raw materials, which are increasingly seen as a solution to the resource base problem (Chanturia, 2008, Kurkov and Kotova, 2007)."

As a result of past developments, mainly at universities, the coal industry has had access for a decade or more to a number of computer programs for coal mine planning. Using some of these programs Bethlehem Steel's Research Department in 1969 launched jointly with Bethlehem Mines Corporation an extensive research and development program aimed at: (1) testing the capabilities of these programs through trial applications as the need and opportunity existed, (2) defining what additional capabilities were required to make mine planning computer systems fully useful in the hands of Bethlehem's mine-planning engineers in the field, and (3) developing and implementing in the field the mine-planning systems agreed on. This program is now nearing completion, and several of Bethlehem's operations routinely use the planning tools that were developed. The progress of this research program is discussed in terms of our initial trial applications of computer methods to mine planning and the incorporation of several innovative features into our new set of computer programs, in particular, the use of time sharing, data base management systems, and general-purpose simulation languages.

Rare earth elements (REE) are regarded today as highly critical raw materials but currently lack suitable recycling processes. A combined hydro- and pyrometallurgical process aimed at REE recovery from used NdFeB permanent magnets was recently developed by the CEA. The process integrates the physico-chemical treatment of magnets, followed by a solvent extraction step for the recovery and intra-REE separation using a selective extractant. A subsequent pyrometallurgical treatment via molten chloride salt electrolysis allowed the isolation of pure Dy metal. Technical-economic assessment and life-cycle analysis were also conducted. Following this first successful demonstration, a new project aimed at the recovery of REE from end-of-life nickel-metal-hydride batteries is currently being developed in association with industrial and academic partners. The project aims at evaluating from an experimental and economic perspective different processes converging at the production of value-added products such as cermet materials for catalytic applications, purified REO concentrates, or metallic alloys.

"The execution of deep basement excavations under narrow conditions is one of the most challenging tasks in geotechnics. The vicinity of neighbouring buildings, roads, and underground structures such as sewers or power lines, quite often prohibits the application of standard solutions. In addition, legal considerations in the use of adjacent properties is becoming increasingly difficult. This paper will present some innovative approaches to overcome the above-mentioned challenges based on several case studies from central Europe. For every project the design approach as well as the techniques used for execution will be explained, detailing both the advantages and the limitations of the applications. One case study shows a deep basement excavation (approx. 17m) in the centre of Prague, Czech Republic. This project featured many challenging boundary conditions (narrow construction area, high ground water table, jet grouting column embedment into bedrock, constraints regarding use of ground anchors due to property rights, etc). The realisation of the complex design is described and illustrated in detail. Other case studies will show the combined application of bored piles with jet grouting and also explain the design of vertical prestressed anchors for retaining walls.INTRODUCTIONThe development of urban areas has always presented challenges, from access for equipment and materials to the rectification of existing foundations in unknown condition. Compounding these is the increasingly stringent requirements to retain, maintain and reduce impact on culturally and historically significant structures. As available space is becoming more limited, optimisation of real estate has resulted in buildings getting higher and their basements deeper below ground. Two or more basement levels are quite common, with typical excavation depths ranging from 5 to more than 10m. Additionally, we are faced with neighbouring buildings that are equally high, deep and massive. These buildings directly adjacent the retaining structure require underpinning to limit settlement, and in cases where they are within just a few meters, this building mass generates additional earth pressure for the retaining wall to support, resulting in complex loading cases.This paper highlights several common challenges and explores the measures implemented to overcome them. The challenges and examples of either design based solutions or practical applications will focus on the following topics – the limitations of conventional geotechnical construction methods, overcoming challenging geology and the requirement for watertight basement constructions."

Sprayed concrete has played an integral role in underground rock support for nearly a century. However, concrete is also considered to be one of the biggest environmental problems in construction and mining, largely because of the high carbon footprint of cement and aggregates production. This is driving the industry to find ways to cut concrete usage where possible. Improving sustainability by cutting concrete material consumption also reduces application time and costs. Improving concrete properties can make it possible to design thinner linings, but as awareness of safety and longer design lifetimes are driving developments in the opposite direction, it is not realistic to see this as a major factor in cutting concrete consumption. More accessible solutions are focusing on layer thickness control and minimising rebound and wastage. Digital technology and innovation offer excellent tools for improving sustainability while optimising other aspects of the spraying process at the same time. A digital layer thickness control system gives near-real-time information to the sprayer operator with full coverage of the sprayed surface. This enables the operator to achieve consistent layer thickness on the first pass, in comparison to the traditional methods of overspraying with the aim of achieving sufficient layer thickness, probe drilling after the concrete has set, and respraying at a later stage if needed. Operator competence is the single biggest variable in a successful sprayed concrete process, affecting rebound and wastage levels. Unfortunately, the learning curve to become a master sprayer is quite steep and training on a real sprayer and real concrete requires a significant amount of time and money. Training in a virtual reality (VR) environment enables operator training to be carried out in a low-risk environment and provides a way of measuring performance and assessing and certifying the operators. After the VR training period, a novice nozzle operator has the basic understanding to start working on a real sprayer, and an experienced nozzle operator can benefit from the possibility of assessing their performance.

"A world famous Wintersport resort in the Alpine planned to build a parking garage for more than 600 cars and busses situated between a torrent, a district road and the village.A nearly 200 m long building giving place for 6 parking levels and a maintenance level for busses and trucks is situated alongside a hill causing excavation height between 20 and 25 meters, which had to be secured. Due to restrictions – neighbours did not allow the client to drill anchors for retention – we designed a solution combining micropiles, strand anchors, shotcrete and nails as permanent earth retention not exceeding the space of 7 meters provided by the local street. Soil conditions were as challenging - reaching from backfill to moraine with boulders of more than 20 m³ volume – as the construction period of total 12 months for the whole project, which was opened mid of November 2015.The innovative solution outperformed the client´s project from the technical and commercial aspect and helped the contractor to save time and money.The design process with its difficulties as well as erection process is described in the following paper."

Recently, the health of the cement industry has been threatened by the impact of environmental regulations, over-zealous state and federal agencies and radical environmental groups. Unfortunately, cement plant operations tend to trigger every environmental regulation and program promulgated, plus several programs designed specifically for the cement industry. These environmental burdens come at a time when the cement marketplace has been impacted by imports resulting in a situation where it has been difficult to increase prices to offset these increased environmental liabilities. The competitive world market forces the cement industry to seek creative ways to reduce costs. With additional major environmental programs coming down the pipe, like the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1980 and EPA regulation of cement kiln dust, the cement industry has attempted to try innovative supplements to cement manufacturing. The cement industry has found that using waste tires, biosolids and other solid wastes in the cement manufacturing process can reduce costs and plant emissions.

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. MARKET Since mining is a worldwide industry it is mandatory that bankers be aware of what is occurring in the marketplace, both foreign and domestic. "The Barrage des Quinze dam is a concrete sluice dam consisting of 19 spillway sections, each of which is approximately 7.6 metres wide and 14.5 metres deep. Rehabilitation efforts being performed on the dam including demolition and improvement of the roadway and spillway sections and grouting to mitigate underseepage. Initially, conventional cement grouting was attempted and was successful in 14 of the spillway sections, but unsuccessful in 5 of the sections due to the high water flows which washed the grout away. The removal of the roadway and portions of the piers during construction temporarily reduced the stability of the structure limiting grouting pressures that could be applied. This and the substantial high water flows (leakage) beneath the dam between the concrete/rock contact and within fractures in the upper rock formation created a challenging situation to create a cutoff.A grouting solution was developed that involved implementing several different grouting methods and materials including balanced high mobility grouts (HMG); low mobility grouts (LMG); polyurethane grouts; and sodium silicates. Because of the critical scheduling for the work, multiple approaches were planned and made available on site so that the work could proceed with the best technology with little, if any, time loss. The end goal of the grouting program was to create a seepage cutoff beneath the 5 sections of the dam in a stepwise process. The initial step was to fill the large openings and create a grout barrier to reduce the high water flow. The second step was to seal the contact between the base of the dam and the bedrock; and the third step was to complete closure by grouting a deep grout curtain into the underlying rock. Other features of the work included an extensive grout mix testing program, water pressure testing, borehole camera survey, and monitoring of the grout injections."

A new hydrogen production process, named the HyPr-RING, has been proposed. Fundamental concept of the HyPr-RING is integration of water carbon reaction, water-gas shift reaction and CO2 absorbing reaction in a single reactor. Firstly, thermodynamic analysis was done to judge the possibility to realize the process. It was found that high pressure and temperature condition, such as 20 MPa and 1000 K, is required to promote this integrated reaction. Next, experimental verification of the new process was done under the high pressure and temperature reaction conditions. As the results, integration of above three reactions in a single reactor can be done successfully and produced a large amount of hydrogen as estimated by thermodynamic analysis. Experiments showed that organic materials including coal, heavy oil, biomass, plastics can be used in this process. In the gaseous phase, no pollutants such asH2S, SO2, COS are detected so that gas cleanup system is not required for power generation when this process is used. Finally, a process design was made to estimate process efficiency. Theoretically, 1 mole of carbon can generate 2 moles of hydrogen and cold gas efficiency of this process estimated as more than 80 per cent. There are many types of Earth Retention Systems (ERS) available in the market where more than one method can be a feasible solution for a project. This paper examines the design and construct process of a project in Dee Why, NSW using a hybrid ERS comprising contiguous piles with jet grout infill. The development comprises a deep basement and mixed-use urban superstructure. The site is located in an area of variable ground conditions, high ground water table and in proximity to existing buildings with multi-level basements. This paper details a comprehensive assessment of the geological conditions and strategies adopted to better understand the effectiveness of the proposed product and to minimise the associated risks of the proposed solution. This involved conducting additional geotechnical investigation, extensive numerical modelling and in-situ monitoring of the movements and the performance of the walls. A monitoring regime consisting of inclinometers, survey points on capping beam and prisms on the neighbouring buildings and roads surrounding shoring wall was implemented. The monitoring results were back-analysed using computer software WALLAP, Plaxis–2D and Plaxis–3D for the post-construction examinations. This paper details the effectiveness and advantages of a hybrid ERS using contiguous piles with jet grout infill.

The complexity of metallurgical processes in the non-ferrous metals industry. especially changes in the process conditions in combination with a diversity of metal processing furnaces, requires a precise knowledge of the system for the selection of refractory products. However, particular importance is still focused on the specific refractory consumption being as low as possible. The addition of recycling material with a high amount of impurities and the increase of low-grade ore concentrates used in the base-metals industry also entails a significant change of slag chemistries, process temperatures, etc., which influence the performance of already approved linings. This acknowledgement of process changes with decreased brick lifetimes provided the motivation for RHI AG to develop high-performance refractory bricks especially for non-ferrous metals applications. The internal laboratory tests with fayalitic slag showed very promising results compared with our approved magnesia-chromite bricks for this application. In order to identify suitable refractory products and to improve the life of the refractory lining, innovative product development has to be undertaken. In addition, the practical corrosion testing methods and facilities available within the RHI Technology Center, such as the induction furnace and the rotary kiln test equipment, allows the best possible understanding of brick wear at a laboratory scale. Based on the results of the test work, the optimal refractory solution can be recommended for a field trial at the customer?s site.

Innovative hard rock narrow-vein, longwall, and stope leach mining systems concepts are described and evaluated economically. The principal tool proposed for use in these systems for both mine development and production is the U.S. Bureau of Mines radial-axial splitter. The mining systems concepts are prefeasibility level costed and projected to be cost competitive for steeply dipping veins, 0.6-1.2 m wide, for horizontal tabular ores 2 m -5 m thick, and for leachable ores with greater than a 1.7:1 stripping ratio. In all of the systems the orebody, less swell, is retained underground for use as backfill.

Velocity of detonation (VOD) is an important variable when evaluating the performance of mine blasts. Typically, for a VOD measurement, individual probes have to be loaded into each blast hole that requires a measurement, which increases the loading time and is not representative of the whole blast. Experimental studies of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the detonation of explosive charges show that electric and magnetic field signals are observed when chemical explosions occur in the air, at the ground surface, and in the underground. EMP has the potential to evaluate VOD of the whole blast without impeding the loading process. Due to a variety of physical causes which make the electromagnetic effects complex, measuring EMP of the detonation of explosive charges has not been fully studied yet. Five different antennae were tested with explosives, which are commonly used in mining industry. Among the five antennae, aluminum and copper tape, and wire were successful to detect the EMP. INTRODUCTION The measurement of the velocity of detonation (VOD) helps in evaluating and comparing relative performance of explosives in mine blasts. A VOD of an explosive is usually predicted by empirical mathematical equations or measured in-hole by VOD meters. However, conventional methods to measure a VOD have constraints: only a limited number of holes can be measured because cost of consumables for such systems is very high, and systems only allow a certain number of holes to be measured. The measurement cables have to be placed into the holes prior to loading with explosives which means that preparing to take the measurement is time consuming and has to be well coordinated with the mine. In order to evaluate VOD for a whole blast, there is a possibility of using electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the detonation of the explosives. As there are many parameters that affect the generated EMP from explosive charges, measuring EMP of the detonation of explosive charges has not been fully studied yet. Most studies conducted relate to military related explosives, not the ones frequently used in mining industry. This research has been performed to have a better understanding of EMP from the types of explosives which are commonly used in the mining industry. To discover a way to detect EMP efficiently, five different types of antennae have been studied in the air and in the underground blasting conditions: coil, monopole rod, log periodic, wire, and aluminum and copper tape. LITERATURE REVIEW Conventional methods of measuring VOD Over the years, demands for more accurate theoretical predictions and physical measurements of the effects of the explosives have increased. Especially when both demand and commodity price decline, mining companies are keen to understand the effectiveness of explosives since it has a direct relationship with fragmentation, which influences their production rate. Since the 1940s, various methods have been devised to determine VOD of explosives.

This paper presents an overview of the innovative methods for gold and silver extraction that have been put into actual practice in North America since 1987. It is an update of a paper of the same title which was presented by Sass and Mansanti at the AMC conference in San Francisco in 1987. New practices, new equipment and variations of older practices that have been introduced in the last five years are discussed in each of the following categories: process selection trends, comminution, gravity concentration, flotation, oxidation, agitated and vat leaching, heap leaching, solution concentration and purification, zinc precipitation, electrowinning, tailings disposal detoxification, and reclamation.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW) has been a world leader in the development of innovative virtual reality technologies over the last 10 to 15 years. These developments have included developing the world?s first 360° surround, virtual reality (VR), stereo projection theatre system known as AVIE (Advanced Visualisation and Interactive Environment), which was developed by iCinema, a collaborative venture between the UNSW Faculties of Engineering and College of Fine Arts. The UNSW School of Mining Engineering has been responsible for development of mining applications virtual reality software modules and to date, has developed eighteen different mine safety training and mining engineering education modules which run in the AVIE environment. This platform and technology package provides a unique ?immersive environment? experience for groups of trainees or students who can engage with the simulated environment in the complete safety of the virtual reality theatre. In all of the major international mining industries, safety is of paramount importance, and training of personnel is an essential component of any comprehensive proactive safety management system. All personnel need to be aware of the inevitable hazards around them at all times, as well as understand appropriate safety and operational procedures. This can be done by conventional class-room style training sessions, or by provision of training documentation. However the effectiveness of such systems is often very limited due to the inability of trainers to engage with the audience for a lengthy period of time; or to convey the often complex and variable mining environments and situations which can exist in a typical mine. The ability to immerse the trainees in a virtual mine environment, with all the reality of an actual mine but with none of the physical exposure to actual hazards, provides a far more effective and engaging training experience. Furthermore, in the virtual world, trainees can be exposed to the very unlikely, but nevertheless high consequence hazards such as mine fires, falls of ground or outbursts, without any risk to their safety and well-being. The end result is that trainees will be far more engaged with the learning environment they find themselves in, and will develop a far higher level of understanding of the topics, rather than simply experiencing a passive class-room style learning environment offered by conventional training modes. The UNSW systems have been implemented widely within the Australian mining industry and the mining engineering education sector and are now being adopted internationally. This paper presents an overview of the innovative technologies involved in these virtual reality systems ? as applied to the mining industry. Modules developed for both mineworker training and mining engineering student learning will be presented, to illustrate the effectiveness and value of such a training and education approach.

Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

Physical and chemical characterization and solid/liquid separation of turbid waters from a river affected by an iron tailing rupture disaster (Gualaxo do Norte River, Brazil) were studied at bench scale. Parameters such as turbidity, pH, surface tension, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids (TSS), particle size distribution (micro- and nanoparticles), and zeta potential were analyzed from samples collected at three different river depths. The results in all samples showed the presence of micro- and nanoparticles, ranging in diameters from 100 nm to 200 μm. Best results for flocculation and settling were obtained at pH 7.5, through an innovative combination of eco-friendly reagents: (i) ferric hydroxide precipitates (10 mg L−1 Fe3+) to sweep (enmesh) the dispersed solids and (ii) gelatinized starch (5 mg L−1 ) to form large flocs. The results showed removals between 90 and 100% of total suspended solids (micro- and nanoparticles), resulting in clear water with residual turbidity < 7 NTU. It is believed that this innovative alternative has a high potential for flocculating and treating the turbid water at Gualaxo do Norte River, assisting the water treatment stations.

Carbon base materials play a critical role in the performance of Hall-Héroult cell. The determination of their thermo-physical properties is of primary importance for modeling and designing complete cell systems. However, overcoming the associated experimental hurdles is complex and often underestimated. Of them are the Poisson’s ratio measurements and the continuous oxidation/burning of the materials at temperatures above 200°C. The novel procedure developed in this research is based on the Gleeble® 3800 system. Its vacuum chamber allows test with a chosen atmosphere at temperature of more than 1000°C. Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and the coefficient of thermal expansion values can all be adequately measured using a single test. Cylindrical carbon samples (: 50mm, L: 100mm) were tested in the modified system at temperatures ranging from room to 950°C without any trace of oxidation. The resulting values were also in good agreement with literature data for a specific graphite material.
