PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), operating in the Ertsberg Mining District in the Province of Papua, is developing the Grasberg Block Cave copper-gold mine. The site aims to output 160 000 t/d and will be located underneath the current Grasberg Open Pit. Initial studies of the potential to develop a block cave mine in the Grasberg orebody have revealed that the mine will require significant volumes of air. The Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) project requires four primary fans (3750 kW each) to support production at full capacity.Fan #1 commissioning was accomplished successfully on 9 February 2012. However, Fan #2 chamber, which is separated by a 20 m pillar, had not been completed. The main challenge was Fan #2 chamber still needed to be benched. The risk of damage to the critical infrastructure in Fan #1 chamber, including ground support, cracks in pedestals, and misalignment in the impeller shaft were considered. The challenges were blasting the bench without damaging the surrounding infrastructure, completing the work safely and meeting the schedule. This was achieved with the engineering control methodology. Since the late 1970s, offshore mining of diamonds has gained more importance and now more than 60 percent of Namibia?s generally high-quality stones come from those offshore deposits, with a steady increase expected for the coming years. Diamonds in Namibia The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, along with tourism and fishing. Diamond mining is one of the two main mining activities in Namibia and diamond mining operations are rapidly moving from onshore to offshore deposits. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current and future situation of the Namibian mining industry, with a special focus on the tasks and new technical developments for the successful excavation of beach and marine diamond deposits. The different deposits and the adequate applied mining technologies and methods are shown in examples.

One of New York City?s largest subway projects is under way 43 m (140 ft) beneath the surface of downtown Manhattan. The East Side Access project, more than 30 years in the making, was halted after a partial excavation in the 1970s due to a lack of funding. The project, once dubbed the ?Tunnel to Nowhere,? has been revitalized into a groundbreaking subway line that includes unique tunnel boring machines (TBM), construction methods and muck removal systems. Project overview The East Side Access project involves construction of a new 6.7-km (4.2-mile) subway line needed to relieve heavy traffic congestion between the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan. The line will serve approximately 160,000 commuters daily between Grand Central and Sunnyside rail stations. Manhattan and Queens will be connected under the East River by the 63rd Street tunnel, a submersed double-decker tube. The submersed tube consists of reinforced concrete sections barged in place on the riverbed. The tube contains operational subway lines on the top deck, while the bottom deck (the ?Tunnel to Nowhere?) will become operational when the East Side Access project is completed in 2013.

INTRODUCTION Seafloor Massive Sulphides are typically found near the oceanic ridges at larger water depths (>1km). The physical properties of SMS, as shown in table 1, are comparable to the properties of weak rock. One of the technical challenges to enable extraction from these locations is the cutting or excavation process. Experiments have shown that the energy needed to excavate the material may increase with water depth (Alvarez Grima et al. 2015). Besides that, it is demonstrated that rock that fails brittle in atmospheric conditions can fail more or less in a plastic fashion when present in a high pressure environment, as would be the case at large water depths. The goal of this research is to identify the physics of the cutting process and to develop this into a model in which the effect of hydrostatic and pore pressures is included. The cutting of rock is initiated by pressing a tool into the rock. As a result, at the tip of the tool a high compressive pressure occurs, which leads to the formation of a crushed zone. Depending on the shape of the tool and the cutting depth, shear failures might emanate from the crushed zone, which will eventually expand as tensile fractures that can reach to the free rock surface. Through this process intact rock will be disintegrated to a granular medium. For an overview of the process (figure 1). Additionally, the presence of water in the pores of and surrounding the rock influences the cutting process through drainage effects. The most relevant effects are weakening when compaction and strengthening when dilation occurs in shearing and tension. Deformation of the rock causes the pore volume to change, resulting in a under or over pressure. As a result, the pore fluid needs to flow. The magnitude of the potential under pressure is limited through cavitation of the pore fluid, limiting further reduction of the pore pressure (figure 2). The drainage effects cause the rock cutting process in a submerged environment to show a stronger dependency of both the hydrostatic pressure as well as the deformation rate (figure 3).

PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. Probably no aspect of underground excavation is as important or as neglected as the environment. The Committee on Rapid Excavation, formed by the National Academy of Engineering to study the technological needs for "rapid" underground excavation in tunnels, shafts, and mines of the future, encountered a blank wall in attempting to evaluate environmental needs. In fact, so little quantitative information on the extent of present-day hazards is available that projection of future environmental-control demands must await more adequate assessment of current hazard levels. Further, there are not even accepted tolerance standards for many environmental conditions, such as heat, noise, and illumination. Only certain atmospheric contaminants have been satisfactorily catalogued. Any technical study, therefore, which purports to examine the state-of- the-art on underground environmental control must, in reality, settle for a cursory survey of a rather nebulous subject. ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS To contend adequately with hazards in the underground environment requires some knowledge of their nature and characteristics. In this regard, it is helpful first to identify our concern: when, where, and to whom or what may environmental conditions constitute "hazards"? Table 1 summarizes considerations that are important in this regard. For the purposes of this Conference (and book), primarily directed toward the excavation process itself, the hazards of consequence occur during excavation (item A) and primarily within the excavation (item B). However, some attention must be given to external hazards as well, since these may affect excavation. This paper presents a successful case history of the ground improvement efforts and excavation of twenty-three cross passages between twin bore tunnels driven by EPB tunneling machines in Los Angeles, California on Section 1 of the Westside Subway Extension. Unique and complicated ground conditions local to the tunnel alignment include San Pedro sands, siltstone/claystone Fernando Formation, and zones of “asphalt impacted soils.” To provide water cut-off and soil stabilization, jet grouting was performed prior to TBM excavation at the location of many of the cross passages. However, upon investigating the cross passages prior to excavation, the subsurface conditions required additional measures and SEM tools to ensure successful completion of the project.

"To accommodate urbanization, cities are developing more underground space as a means to house public transportation systems and other entities. Underground developments often require construction of deep excavations in an environment dense with infrastructure. The success of such a project is related to the amount of impact imposed on adjacent structures and economic activity; impact should be limited to insignificant amounts in order to mitigate damage and disruption. Thus, large-scale urban construction projects require extensive monitoring of ground movements and installed support performance to facilitate informed decisions for adjustment of construction activities and support design when necessary.In downtown San Francisco, a unique large-scale excavation in saturated soft soils was constructed for the Transbay Transit Center (TTC). Construction of the excavation began in April 2012 and was completed almost two years later in February 2014. To monitor ground and structure response to construction, the project team used an extensive instrumentation network that included automatic inclinometers, piezometers, strain gages and total stations paired with survey markers. Innovative imaging techniques developed a record of construction in order to relate measured deformations to construction activity.Transbay Transit CenterThe Transbay Transit Center (TTC) is being constructed as a modern day transportation hub in downtown San Francisco to replace the former Transbay Terminal. The project is located in the South of Market area, less than half a mile from the San Francisco Bay. The final center will connect eight counties in the Bay Area through 11 different transportation systems, some of which will be housed in the TTC including Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit and California High Speed Rail. The aboveground structure will consist of two levels for retail and a third level with a bus terminal beneath a rooftop garden. There will be two subgrade levels to serve as a lower concourse and the train platforms. This structure required construction of a deep excavation closely surrounded by buildings and roads in an area thriving with economic activity."

"In Canada and other countries, several types of rock formations are being considered for the geological disposal of radioactive wastes. In order to better understand the ability of these rocks to contain and isolate the wastes, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission collaborates with different international research organizations and has access to experimental data from Underground Research Laboratories (URLs) in the world. Such an URL is situated in Opalinus Clay, at Mont Terri, Switzerland. An experiment, consisting of the excavation of a tunnel followed by water and gas injections in a test section of the tunnel, was performed at the URL. The authors have developed a mathematical model, based on the poromechanics theoretical framework, to simulate those phases of the experiment. The constitutive relationship for the stress-strain behaviour of Opalinus Clay takes into account its inherent anisotropy due to bedding. The model was able to capture the main features of the experiment such as the prediction of the shape and extent of the excavation damage zone and its influence on water and gas migration.INTRODUCTIONIn Canada and many other countries, several types of rock formations such as crystalline rocks and sedimentary argillaceous rocks, are being studied for the disposal of used nuclear fuel from nuclear power plants. Geological disposal relies on multiple natural and engineered barriers for the long-term containment and isolation of the wastes. The host rock is a major natural barrier and is the subject of extensive research. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Canada’s nuclear regulator, will be responsible for the licensing of future deep geological repositories. In order to evaluate the safety of deep geological repositories, CNSC staff keep abreast of scientific developments by collaborating with national and international partners on experimental and theoretical research on the long term performance of those engineered and natural barriers. Through that collaboration, the CNSC has access to data resulting from experiments performed at different Underground Research Laboratories (URLs)."

INTRODUCTION Mount Isa Mines Ltd. operates a copper and silver- lead-zinc property at Mount Isa in northwest Queens- land, Australia. Mount Isa is located in the tropics at latitude 20°43'S and longitude 139°30’E (Fig. 1). It is on the upper watershed of the Leichhardt River and at an elevation of 365 m above sea level. The average rain- fall is 360 mm/y, the greater part of which falls in January to March (the hot summer months). The mean summer temperature for these months is 30°C (dry bulb), with a maximum temperature of 43°C; the mean wet bulb temperature is 25°C with a maximum of 28°C. Mount Isa is located geologically towards the western edge of the Precambrian Shield of northwestern Queensland. This complex forms a north-tilting dissected peneplain which extends in the north-south direction for 640 km, with widths varying from 32 km to 190 km. The combination of differential erosion, regional strike, and steep dips has produced a corrugated topography of low north-south orientated hills and valleys. The field was first discovered in 1923 as a silver- lead-zinc field. Mount Isa Mines Ltd. was formed the following year and subsequently became the sole operating company on the field. Lead and copper ore have been mined and treated separately and simultaneously at Mount Isa since 1953. Intensive exploration commenced in 1954 and an active exploration program provided the justification for a series of production expansion programs in both silver- lead-zinc and copper (see Table 1 ). The most recent and largest production expansion program at Mount Isa commenced when a decision was reached in December 1969 calling for an increase in copper production from 100 000 to 150 000 t/y of blister copper. A major factor which influenced this decision was the substantial additions to the ore reserves in the so-called 1100 ore body which is a massive copper sulfide ore body with a known strike length of approximately 2500 m, a height which is variable up to 300 m, and a width of generally 300 m up to a maximum of 370 m (see Figs. 2 and 3). Host to the copper mineralization is a complex and variable rock generally called "silica dolomite." The ore body strikes 6.02 to 6.1 rad (345° to 350°), dips west between 0.78 and 1.13 rad (45° and 65°), and is truncated at depth by fault implaced basement rocks. It first occurs some 600 m below the surface and bottoms at about 1000 m below the surface. The unconfined compressive strength of the silica dolomite ore varies from 150 to 250 MPa, whereas the basement rocks, carbonaceous mylonite, slaty shale, buck quartz, and greenstone (a chloritic schist) are considerably weaker, varying in strength from 20 to 80 MPa. The distribution of mineralization within the ore body is variable, but can be considered as generally high grade at or just above the basement contact and diminishing towards the upper reaches of the ore body. The basic story at Bear Swamp was how to excavate an underground chamber 79 feet wide by 227 feet long and 150 feet high, along with the related access, tarbrace, leads, power tunnels and shafts, do it under cost and ahead of schedule and still have just about everybody love you. The isometric sketch of the overall project follows. I won't go into any of the details of the physical scope at this point. Instead, we'll bring out the sizes, grades, particular problems of the different areas as we cover them. First of all, let's establish that Bear Swamp was a Target Estimate - Fee with Incentives type of contract. Gates and Fox's contract was with the project's general contractor, J. A. Jones. We were one of three contractors who submitted proposals and estimates to Jones. After much negotiation and many submittals, Gates and Fox was notified we had been selected to do the underground excavation on April 12, 1971. We had our first people back on site in two days, set up a temporary office, made our first steel order for jumbo erection, pacing our jumbo construction to meet the date when J. A. Jones would have the access portal ready for us. The shops, yards, dry house, compressor building were all erected as sites were designated for our use. At last, on Thursday, June 3, we trimmed the face and moved our 9-machine Euclid jumbo up a hastily constructed haul road and started our portal preparation of the access tunnel.

Murer Company, Andermatt, Switzerland, can claim to have done pioneer work in the construction of inclined shafts. This happened in 1968/69, when we decided to bore with a Wirth tunnel borer an inclined shaft, 1100 m in length, 3.0 m in diameter, and with a grade of 65%, in the 2400 kilo pascall per sq. cm granite of the Montblanc Massive. The whole excavation was accomplished in ten months which, at least for European conditions, can be claimed as a record. It was, at least to our knowledge, the first inclined shaft to be bored full-face (Fig. 1). Encouraged by the experiences and performances attained at Châtelard, we approached other projects of the same kind. We were awarded, together with Hochtief Ltd., Essen, a contract from Schluchseewerke, Freiburg, Germany, in December 1969, for the construction of a penstock for the Hornbergstufe at Wehr, Germany, with a diameter of 6.3 m. This inclined shaft with a grade of 55% is located in Schwarzwalder granite with a compressive strength of up to 2000 kilo pascall per sq. cm, about 31,000 psi. As no exact geological data were available about the rock to be worked, and a fault zone from 80 to 150 m long had to be faced, as well as a few individual fissures of varying thickness, it was decided to use the multi-stage method. The 3-m diam tunnelling machine which had driven the oblique shaft at Châtelard had now finished work, and an immediate beginning was made with driving the pilot staft. This was very welcome to the contractor, since exact information about the type of rock present and the inflows of water was required immediately and before the final borehole diameter was fixed, for the purpose of dimensioning the supports to be subsequently installed.

The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is the world's largest underground cavern for public use and was created primarily to facilitate the ice hockey tournaments for the 1994 winter Olympics in Norway. The cavern has a span of 61 m, is 91 m long and is 25 m high. Ordinarily, rock caverns have a span width of 15 to 25 m, however, temporary mining caverns of up to 60 m have been excavated and natural caves with even greater dimensions occur. The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is unique as it is for public use with a capacity for 5800 spectators. Blasting was conducted with a high production rate at normal costs due to detailed planning and strict supervision of each round. The initiation system and vibration monitors were the main tools to control vibration levels and to facilitate a high production rate. It was of utmost importance that the rock remaining in the roofs and walls was of high quality after blasting to avoid rock fall, rock slides and excessive maintenance work.

When driving a shallow soft ground bore, the appearance of surface craters along the tunnel alinement indicates trouble, particularly when a major highway is intersected. During the excavation of a 3.7 m diam tunnel in Seattle, Washington a chemical grouting program was implemented to stabilize soil conditions sufficiently to allow advancement of the mole without loss of ground. Unanticipated mixed face conditions consisting of saturated running sand and some boulder pockets bedded on top of dense glacial till created excavation difficulties. A discussion of problems and corrective measures is presented.

New construction in metropolitan areas has direct impacts on immediate neighbors and abutters. While noise and dust are generally nuisance concerns, demolition, vibrations, excavation, and dewatering can cause structural damage to adjacent structures. Different cities, states, or jurisdictions have different regulations that dictate requirements, roles, or responsibilities for varying parties during construction. The authors will introduce and discuss risks of new construction adjacent to existing structures, and the legal framework in Illinois which requires the owner of the new construction project to provide adequate protections for adjacent existing structures. The authors, who are engineers and attorneys, will discuss technical and legal concerns, and will highlight the importance of early and frequent communication among project participants to manage risks, despite whether or not any local regulations exist to drive the process. RISKS IN ADJACENT CONSTRUCTION New construction in metropolitan areas inherently involves some combination of noise, dust, ground-borne vibrations, earth excavation, and subgrade dewatering. These issues have potential to directly and adversely affect abutters and their property. Noise and dust can be nuisance concerns, while vibrations, excavation, and dewatering can result in damage to abutters’ structures. Noise and dust are unlikely to lead to physical damage to abutters’ property, and can be controlled with limited work hours and good housekeeping practices. Vibrations and excavations, however, if not well understood, planned for, and mitigated, can result in serious damage to abutters’ structures. In turn, this damage introduces additional and often significant costs and schedule delays.

It has often been said by consulting engineers that foundation contractors are in the business of taking risks. One would agree that the mere fact a foundation project can be budgeted, planned, engineered and executed solely on the reliability of eight test borings made at a proposed site having an area of approximately 19,000 square feet, is a risky proposition, in and of itself. Now imagine that this site is actually one half of a city block located in an urban setting in an old, congested, historical neighborhood, surrounded by narrow city streets and historic landmark buildings. And suppose that the required depth of excavation for the construction of the new building on this site is approximately 35 feet and the natural groundwater table is at a depth below existing grade of only 25 feet. Given the difficult site conditions outlined above, one could certainly add the words "challenging" and "complicated" to the inherent word "risky" when describing the construction techniques involved to undertake a foundation project of this magnitude. This case study will discuss in detail how the excavation, sheeting, dewatering and underpinning work was accomplished as well as the problems overcome along the way.

The project was to develop an area within the existing West County Wastewater Treatment Plant which would enable the construction of a new Raw Wastewater Pump Station (RWPS) with a footprint of approximately 85 feet by 190 feet and a foundation depth of about 82 feet below grade and a new Short- Term Detention Basin (STDB) with a footprint of about 80 feet by 130 feet and a foundation depth that varied from approximately 3 to 24 feet below grade.. The excavation support system had to be designed to withstand both normal and the 100-year flood elevations. A Reinforced Soil-Cement Wall (RSW)was chosen to provide a hydraulic barrier which consisted of a single row of soil-cement elements installed along the perimeter of the area to be excavated. Steel wide flange beams were installed on 4 foot centers to support construction loads and be resistant to the lateral forces of the soil and hydrostatic pressures. The RSW was installed to a maximum depth of 104.5ft using a triple-auger drill rig with mixing paddles with a 2ft key into weathered shale providing a cutoff wall consisting of 53,150 square foot of treated soil. The project was to provide the initial design of the excavation support for the pumping station excavation support system and groundwater cutoff. There was 534 linear foot of soil-cement-bentonite wall installed and 106 - 80 foot long W21 x 121 wide flange beams installed on four foot centers into the alignment of the wall. Each element was drilled down into the weathered shale to obtain groundwater cutoff. Derek R. Guthrie Water Quality Treatment Center Pumping Package is the site for a new pumping station that will service Louisville, Kentucky residents. After unplanned long term exposure into the winter, the effects of freeze thaw cycles were evident.

As a part of Mumbai City Mega Drinking Water Project at Amar Mahal Tunnel-1 Ghatkopar East Mumbai, drinking water tunnels were proposed by MCGM from Amar Mahal to Trombay reservoirs, Amar Mahal to Wadala and further up to Parel. The pipeline has to be underground and laid at a depth of 5.5m. The initial proposal was to provide sheet piling to enable the safe excavation and installation of underground pipeline. However, installation of sheetpiles was practically not feasible due to the existing soil strata for driving the sheet piles. Hence, it was proposed to install micropiles instead of sheet piles. In this paper we discuss about the purpose, basic design, detailed design approaches and actual work implementation of micro pile with temporary struts for shoring protection works in this project.

Excavation-induced ground movements are a critical component in the design and construction of deep excavations in urban settings due to the potential adverse effects on adjacent structures and infrastructure. Ground movements are influenced by soil stratigraphy, soil properties, adjacent structures, and construction means and methods. The use of empirical relationships, computer models, and reliance on experience with similar excavations in similar soil conditions often provides a basis for predicting excavation-induced ground movements. In this paper, data from 21 deep excavations approximately 20 ft to 75 ft deep supported by concrete diaphragm “slurry” walls in the Greater Boston area are compared to published literature, considering how different foundation systems (e.g. shallow foundations, caissons, and piles) of abutting structures have been affected by adjacent excavations. The influence of construction method (conventional vs. top-down) on adjacent foundation movements indicate that top-down construction typically results in smaller foundation movements. INTRODUCTION Estimation of ground movements due to excavation is a challenging endeavor, even with complex three- dimensional finite element modeling and high-order constitutive models that are increasingly available in modern engineering practice. Aside from the expense of the soil exploration and testing used to inform these higher-order models, the challenges of modeling past stress history, adjacent structures, and the groundwater conditions during excavation require not only large investments of time during design but also validation from past experience (to avoid a “garbage in, garbage out” paradigm). While site conditions such as soil stratigraphy, soil properties, groundwater conditions, and as-built conditions of adjacent structures can be obtained, measured, and estimated, the effects that means and methods of construction have on ground movements are difficult to quantify. During early phase design, assessments of predicted ground movement are unable to account for all aspects of project construction, nor is it cost-efficient to fully design an excavation while project parameters such as site size and excavation depth are under consideration by the design team. While construction is in progress, benchmarking support of excavation performance and associated ground movements in the context of successfully completed projects allows for a more nuanced view of system performance and provides the opportunity for more informed decision-making (if required) as construction proceeds. For these reasons, the use of empirical relationships and the collection of historical support of excavation performance holds high value for the practicing geotechnical engineer at all phases of the project.
