"The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. Lord (Geological Survey of Western Australia): During the last few days in Kalgoorlie here we have heard on various occasions of the great job the mining engineers have done persisting against rising costs and increasing salaries without a rise in the price of gold. I think it has been somewhat overlooked that it has been difficult to find additional ore as well. I consider that geologists also should be commended on their action in persisting to search for more orebodies. This goes on in any mining community, but in Kalgoorlie in particular, I believe, over the last few years that it has been more difficult all the time to find additional orebodies and the Companies are calling for higher grades to offset the economic condition. I feel that this paper by Mr. Finucane shows that the geologists have persevered on an idea and discovered that they can find additional orebodies in the calc schist where previously it was thought that these did not occur. This has added many tons to the ore reserves, and although it is not very significant at the moment, the significance will probably improve as more work is done.The whole thing has shown us the importance of economic geology. Mr Finucane has had many years of experience here and he has given us a very able exposition of the economics of ore finding, and there are not many questions that one could pose to him, because most of the information he presented is obviously fact borne out by drilling, underground development and lining up the ore channels. He did briefly touch on ore shoots-the Oroya shoot and several others. It would be very good if we could, and I feel sure...

Regardless of the mechanical design features of a particular air classifier certain basic principles apply. Specifically , there are two forces at work: 1. An air drag force 2. An inertial or centrifugal force. The air drag force has an increasing influence as particles become smaller. A very small low mass particle is easily carried along with an air stream even when turning a corner. Thus, fine particles follow the air away from the classifying zone. Inertial forces increase as the mass of a particle gets larger. Thus oversize particles tend to obey Newton's laws and respond to centrifugal forces or simply continue in a straight path when the airflow changes direction.

"Studying the interaction of the phosphorus-containing flotation reagent with the components of the flotation system ""liquid-gas-solid"" during flotation of non-ferrous metal ores allows regulating the enrichment process. The phosphorus-containing reagent-collector anabasinium-O,O-dimethyl-thiophosphate has beensynthesized under laboratory conditions and the concentrated aqueous solution of anabasin hydrochloride and the 40% solution of sodium hydroxide have been used as the raw material. The phosphorus-containing reagent has been obtained by interaction of the anabasine base, sulfur and dimethyl phosphite, due to sulfur and nitrogen atoms it can form complex compounds with heavy metal ions.Studying flotation of copper-sulfide ore of the Sayak field with the use of the phosphorus-containing reagent-collector anabasinium has been performed in the open and closed cycles. The degree of ore grinding was 60- 62% of the class -0.074 mm. There has been established the dependence of the ore flotation parameters on: a) pH of the pulp; b) the consumption of the reagent-collector anabasinium.The effect of the pulp pH on the technological parameters of copper ore flotation has been carried out with a reagent regulator that increases the difference in the surface properties of the minerals to be separated.There has been used lime as the regulator of the medium, the consumption of which varied from 750 to 1500 g/t; the consumption of the reagent-collector anabasinium was 10, 15, 20 and 25 g/t.It has been found that when flotation of copper ore without the use of lime at pH equal to 7.8 and at the reagent consumption, g/t: anabasinium - 25, T-92 - 55, copper recovery in the concentrate is 92.72%, the quality of concentrate is 7, 1%.In flotation according to the factory mode (the consumption of xanthate is 44 g/t, T-92 is 55 g/t, pH = 7.8 (without lime)) of copper ore, copper recovery in the concentrate is 87.38%, the concentrate quality is 7, 97%, with reducing the xanthate consumption to 25 g/t copper recovery is reduced to 83.39%, the quality of the concentrate is up to 6.69%.In the experiments using the factory reagent mode in the closed cycle, with the xanthate mass consumption of 44 g/t, T-92 blowing agent of 55 g/t, the third recleaning concentrate contained 19.13% copper with recovery of 86.89%.Using a phosphorus-containing reagent instead of xanthate with the same flow rate, the third recleaning concentrate with the mass fraction of copper of 19.82% has beenobtained with recovery of 87.77%."

Nos últimos anos, a indústria automotiva tem evoluído de forma significativa em relação à preservação ambiental e com respeito à segurança veicular. A Usiminas, alinhada a esses avanços, tem realizado estudos visando obter novos produtos de alta resistência mecânica que possibilitem a redução do peso dos veículos e diminuição do consumo de combustível, além do aumento da segurança. Para novos projetos de veículos, como fator de melhoria do desempenho dos materiais de alta resistência, têm assumido destaque especial nos aços Dual Phase, principalmente naqueles do grau 1000MPa, as características de expansão de furo, em função da correlação com a vida em fadiga e o comportamento à fratura. Esse trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar uma das etapas do ciclo de desenvolvimento de um aço Dual Phase do grau 1000MPa com características de expansão de furo maior que 20%. O trabalho avaliou três conceitos diferentes de liga submetidos a tratamentos térmicos específicos. Os resultados obtidos permitiram retroalimentar o ciclo posterior do desenvolvimento, no qual resultados positivos foram alcançados.

A busca por processos alternativos para o tratamento de efluentes industriais contendo metais tem aumentado devido às limitações geradas pela precipitação química, como a geração de lama e alto consumo de reagentes. Dentre os métodos avaliados, a eletrodiálise se destaca por possuir ampla aplicabilidade, não gerar mais resíduos e pela possibilidade de recuperação do metal. Entretanto, para garantir sua viabilidade, torna-se necessário estudar a estrutura das membranas empregadas a fim de avaliar o comportamento dos íons durante a passagem de um compartimento para outro e definir qual membrana deve ser empregada para cada tipo de separação. Em virtude do exposto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar qualitativamente as membranas trocadoras de cátions HDX 100 e PC-SK por MEV/EDS para avaliar a presença dos elementos químicos em cada uma além de possíveis contaminações, e por FT-IR para determinar suas ligações químicas. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, ambas possuem carbono, oxigênio, enxofre e sódio em suas estruturas confirmando a presença de ácido sulfônico como grupo funcional. As ligações químicas entre os elementos determinados por MEV/EDS presentes nas membranas também foram identificadas por FT-IR. Conclui-se que os métodos empregados no presente trabalho são eficazes para caracterização das membranas avaliadas.

O laminador de chapas grossas possui um conjunto de técnicas de última geração para controle de forma (Bending, Shifting e Smart Crown) integrado ao modelo matemático que define o esquema de passes ótimo em função das propriedades mecânicas objetivadas no produto final. Isso permite obter chapas grossas de aços microligados em várias classes de resistência mecânica de 600 a 1.200MPa e de boa tenacidade a -60°C.

Aços inoxidáveis supermartensíticos (AISM) são aços de matriz martensítica contendo baixos teores de carbono, abaixo de 0,03%. Eles vêm sendo utilizados na indústria de óleo e gás para aplicações específicas que exigem resistência mecânica aliada a moderada resistência à corrosão. Após serem temperados para a obtenção da estrutura martensítica, esses aços são submetidos a tratamento de revenimento para alívio de tensões e melhoria das propriedades de tenacidade e ductilidade. Durante o revenimento é esperada a ocorrência de mudanças microestruturais resultantes principalmente da precipitação de diferentes fases. Tais precipitados influenciam tanto as propriedades mecânicas finais quanto a resistência à corrosão desses aços. Nesta pesquisa foi avaliada a resistência à corrosão por pite de dois AISM do tipo 13Cr5Ni2Mo, um deles contendo Nb (0,11%), através de ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica em soluções de 0,6M NaCl sem e com adições de 0,3M e 0,6M Na2SO4. Os resultados mostraram que a adição de Na2SO4 no eletrólito contendo NaCl inibe consideravelmente a corrosão por pite. Foi constatado também que o AISM contendo Nb apresenta maior resistência à corrosão por pite nos eletrólitos de misturas de cloreto e sulfato. Além disso, os resultados mostraram que o revenimento a 575°C melhora a resistência à corrosão por pite, comparativamente ao revenimento a 600°C. O melhor potencial de pite foi obtido para o aço ao Nb, revenido a 575°C por 2h, em eletrólito 0,6Na2SO4+0,6NaCl.

Aços Inoxidáveis Supermartensíticos surgiram na indústria petroquímica como um material alternativo para confecção de dutos, devido principalmente ao sinergismo de suas propriedades mecânicas e de corrosão. Com esta nova demanda, tornou-se necessária a caracterização deste material em suas diversas propriedades, destacando-se neste trabalho o efeito da microestrutura na resistência à corrosão. Objetivou-se, portanto, o estudo da resistência à corrosão por pite de um aço inoxidável supermartensítico 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo-Nb em função da fração volumétrica de ferrita-delta (d) presente na microestrutura. A variação da ferrita-delta foi alcançada através de tratamentos de recozimento, a 1.050°C, durante diferentes tempos (de 0,5h a 48h). As amostras foram submetidas a ensaios de polarização potenciodinâmica em eletrólito contendo 3,5% NaCl, naturalmente aerado. Quantificou-se, ainda, a porcentagem de ferrita em cada uma das condições através de ataque eletrolítico com solução 20% NaOH. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram a diminuição desta fase com o aumento do tempo de recozimento, chegando praticamente à sua eliminação com tratamento de 48h. Paralelamente, a resistência à corrosão por pite deste aço foi melhorada de modo proporcional à diminuição da fase ferrita, resultando em um aumento de aproximadamente 115 mV da pior para a melhor condição, comprovando que, de fato, a presença de ferrita-delta prejudica as propriedades de resistência à corrosão localizada.

Placas lingotadas continuamente, não obstante atendam a requisitos como composição química, conteúdo de inclusões, aspectos macro e micrográficos, podem ser desclassificadas por falta de conformidade dimensional. Contrações térmicas, de solidificação e de transformações de fases são partes intrínsecas do processo e são afetadas por alterações na taxa de extração de energia da placa durante o processo. Este conjunto de contrações determina o Fator de Contração de operação, o qual é utilizado para determinar as dimensões do molde que irão resultar na largura especificada, onde o presente estudo determinará o fator de contração dos aços peritéticos. As variáveis identificadas que influenciam no fluxo de calor primário foram: frequência de oscilação, superaquecimento, velocidade de lingotamento e viscosidade do pó fluxante. Identificou-se que o resfriamento secundário e a conicidade utilizado no molde, também são critérios determinantes para obtenção de larguras especificadas. Assim sendo, uma equação de regressão foi desenvolvida para o Fator de Contração.

Beryllium occurs in the Honeycomb Hills area in volcanic tuff similar to the more extensive berylliferous tuff occurring 20 miles east at Spor Mountain , Juab County , Utah . Samples from the two areas have been mineralogically examined to ascertain whether they have similar characteristics . The Honeycomb Hills samples showed the presence of beta- Be ( OH ) 2 , as well as an amorphous berylliferous substance , whereas in the Spor Mountain tuff the beryllium- bearing minerals are hydrated bertrandite and berylliferous saponite .

O impacto de alguns elementos microligantes no tamanho de grão e nas propriedades mecânicas obtidas em diferentes rotas de processamento foi estudado neste trabalho para uma laminação de barras de aços especiais, special bar quality em inglês, SBQ. Esse estudo compreende as etapas iniciais da metodologia para o desenvolvimento de um modelo capaz de prever o comportamento da microestrutura e as propriedades mecânicas obtidas em processos de laminação de barras, que é pouco difundido para aços microligados. Foram testadas duas variações de aços microligados, com diferentes percentuais de Nb e Ti A rota de processamento mostrou um papel fundamental para a obtenção de melhores propriedades mecânicas nos aços testados – um aprimoramento considerável foi observado quando o material foi laminado seguido uma sequência termo-controlada.

Physical properties of thin films of CdS and CdSe formed by vacuum deposition onto glass sibstrates have been studied as a function of deposition and processing conditions. The crystallinity and surface features of CdS films were examined using electron microscopy and electron and X-ray diffraction techniques. The films were poly crystalline; the preferred orientation and crystallite size increased with film thickness, substrate temperature, and deposition time. The CdS films consisted primarily of hexagonal-phase material, in contrast to similarly prepared CdSe films which have previously been observed to contain mixtures of cubic and hexagonal phases. As-deposited CdS films showed no major dependence of Hall mobility on crystallite size or degree of preferred orientation. Hall mobility and carrier concentration in CdS and CdSe .films were measured at various temperatures; both parameters increased with temperature and yielded activation energies which depended on fabrication conditions. Surface-desorption phenomena and overcoating of the semiconductor with SiO affected the observed electrical properties significantly. THIN films of cadmium sulfide1,2 and cadmium sele-nide3,4 have been employed by various workers as semiconductors in the insulated-gate thin-film field-effect transistor, known as the TFT. These devices are most commonly made by vacuum deposition of all materials onto an amorphous substrate such as glass. A knowledge of the microstructure and electrical properties of semiconductor layers used in the thin-film transistor is essential in order to form a realistic model for the device and to improve its performance, reproducibility, and reliability. This paper will describe studies of the physical properties of vacuum-deposited CdS and CdSe films prepared under various conditions. Structural characteristics examined in- cluded phases present, crystallite size, nature of preferred orientation of crystallites, surface roughness, and structural homogeneity throughout the film thickness. Electrical properties measured were Hall mobility and conductivity and their dependence on temperature and ambient. Thin-film properties are affected by many fabrication parameters including purity and physical form of evaporant, deposition rate, film thickness, design and temperature of the evaporation crucible, geometry of the deposition chamber, nature of the residual atmosphere, composition and temperature of the substrate, and details of postdeposition processing. PREPARATION OF FILMS In this work the semiconductor films were deposited in a conventional oil-diffusion-pumped system with pressures in the 10-8 torr range. The CdS evaporant was obtained from the Eagle-Picher Co. as a high-purity coarse-grained crystalline powder; the CdSe was a high-purity sintered powder supplied by the Harshaw Chemical Co. The evaporation crucible was a resistance-heated molybdenum-wire basket coated with aluminum oxide and filled with a quartz wool plug at the top. The source to substrate distance was usually 10 cm. This region was enclosed by a Pyrex inner cylinder. The substrate was heated with an overlying Pyrex plate coated with tin oxide. The substrate temperature was controlled using a thermocouple attached to the lower side of the heater. This thermocouple was calibrated against another thermocouple attached to a dummy substrate and by observation of melting points of various metal films deposited in the system. The substrates were polished borosilicate glass plates and conventional glass microscope slides. Substrate preparation included cleaning with an ultrasonically agitated detergent bath followed by isopropanol-vapor de-greasing. Sheet mica is an important material in the manufacture of electronic and electrical equipment. Large quantities are consumed each year as an essential component in generators, transformers, radios, television sets, radar, electric lighting equipment, and electrical appliances. The nature, structural imperfections, and impurities determine to a great degree the usefulness of sheet mica. Proper processing and classification add greatly to its market value. Spiral concentrators are one of the flowing film gravity concentration devices used to beneficiate coal and mineral ores. The aim of the current study is to understand the particulate flow and separation performance of an LD9 spiral concentrator using a multi-phase Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. The CFD model utilises the Algebraic slip mixture model to simulate particulate flows. The model employs the Renormalisation group (RNG) k-ɛ turbulence models to resolve the fluid turbulence. Initially, the volume of fluid method was adopted to track the water-air interface. Simulations were then carried out at low (0.3 and 3 wt.%) and moderate (15 wt.%) solids concentrations. Multiple particle-phase representing particles of poly sizes (75–1400 µm) and multi-densities (1450–2650 kg/m3 ) were simulated to study the particle segregation on the spiral trough surface. The numerical predictions are compared with the literature performance data at a diluted pulp flow rate of 6 m3 /hr. The results were found in close agreement. Further, the same CFD model is used to study the change in pulp velocity, streamflow rates, and separation performance at increasing solids concentration. For the same density particles, Fine particles mostly show higher volume concentration in the middle and outer trough regions, whereas coarse particles show higher volume concentration in the interior and central trough regions. It implies that the fine particles mostly segregate towards the outer region, and dense particles segregate towards the axial column.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Great Salt Lake Minerals and Chemical Corp. developed a froth flotation process for concentrating potassium salts from Great Salt Lake solar evaporites containing about 5 percent K. The crude evaporites, which were predominately halite (NaCl) with smaller amounts of kainite (KCl.MgSO4.2.7H20) and schoenite (K2SO4MgSO4.6H20), were conditioned in a saturated brine solution, thus converting nonfloatable kainite to the floatable mineral schoenite. Schoenite was then selectively floated with a medium-molecular weight fatty acid. Continuous small-scale pilot plant testing indicated that 80 percent of the potassium could be recovered from the crude evaporites in flotation concentrates assaying about 11 percent K.

Eutectic freeze crystallisation is a novel separation technique that can be applied to treat brine solutions such as reverse osmosis retentates, which are often a mixture of different inorganic salts. The treatment of calcium sulphate-rich brine solutions through eutectic freeze crystallisation has resulted in gypsum scale formation on the walls of the crystallisers and ancillary equipment. In order to prevent gypsum scaling on equipment surfaces, it is essential to understand the mechanism of gypsum scaling on cold surfaces. This paper focused on the interaction between gypsum crystallisation in the bulk solution and scaling on the crystalliser walls in the presence of gypsum seeds. A cooled, U-shaped stainless-steel tube suspended in the saturated solution was employed as the scaling surface. Preliminary results showed that the scale layer was predominantly composed of needle-type and hexagonal prismatic crystals. The rate of scale deposition was highest during the first 24 hours, thereafter it decreased. A thin scale layer was observed to have coated the tube within the first hour of the experiment. Seeding, using reagent grade gypsum crystals, was effective in reducing scale layer formation through providing a surface for growth. The highest scale reduction, 81%, was realised at a seed loading of 0.50 g/L. At a high seed loading of 4.01 g/L, the seed material adhered to the tube. Microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de tubos de aço inoxidável superduplex SAF 2507 processados por soldagem por atrito com pino não consumível foram analisadas. Juntas de alta qualidade foram produzidas com sucesso utilizando ferramentas de nitreto de boro cúbico policristalino (PCBN), controle de força de 38 kN, velocidade de avanço de 50 mm/min, velocidade de rotação de 200 RPM. Ensaios de dureza e tração foram realizados, evidenciando aumento de dureza na zona de mistura e falha no metal de base. Simulações térmicas calcularam temperaturas globais máximas em torno de 1176 °C e diferentes ciclos térmicos ao longo da espessura da junta, conferindo diferenças microestruturais e mecânicas nestas regiões

The deformation behaviors under both tensile and compressive forces and microstructure evolutions of cast SA508-4N steel were investigated at elevated temperatures. True stress-strain data were obtained from hot deformation experiments performed on a Gleeble-3500 thermal-simulator under different temperatures (750-1200C) and strain rates (0.001-10 s-1). The reduction of area decreases as a function of temperature from 750C to 900C and then increases. At 1200C, the reduction of area reaches more than 99% with the strain rates of 0.5 s-1 and 1.0 s-1. The dynamic recrystallization under compressive stress occurs at 800C under low strain rate and a complete dynamic recrystallization can be observed when the temperature reaches above 1100C. A “two-stage” flow stress constitutive model concerned with dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization was established based on the true stress-strain data. This model shows good agreement with experiment results. Moreover, we developed a dynamic recrystallized grain size model to describe the average grain size after complete dynamic recrystallization.

"In this research work, it was attempted to reduce the iron contents (Fe2O3) in relatively low grade silica sample which was obtained from Shenin silica mine, using magnetic separation. The prepared sample contained 93.75%SiO2, 0.44%Fe2O3, 2.78%Al2O3, and 0.08%TiO2 and the Fe2O3 had to be reduced to less than 0.08%. Mineralogical studies and XRD analysis indicated the presence of Hematite, Pyrite, and Goethite as the major iron impurity phases. Mineralogical studies of polished and thin sections demonstrated that the degree of freedom of silica is more than 80% in -300+212 ?m size fraction. After primary stages including crushing, milling, scrubbing and de-sliming, various methods such as low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS), high gradient magnetic separation (WHGMS) and dry high intensity magnetic separation (DHIMS) were applied to find out that which process would be appropriate for the elimination of iron impurities from this sample. Different experiments were carried out on the product of wet rod mill and scrubber. However the magnetic field intensity of WHGMS was increased down to 2Tesla, and there was not any acceptable result in reduction of Fe2O3 content lower than 0.08%. Thereafter the product of wet rod mill and scrubber were dried and reported to DHIMS. In these experiments, maximum magnetic field intensity was 1.4Tesla. In this case very significant results were achieved, and Fe2O3 content of final product were reduced to less than 0.05% which meets glass manufacturing standards."
