Distinct trends in grinding mill technology have emerged in recent years. In an effort to optimize overall mill performance for the needs of the End User, broad measures of logistical speed, process flexibility, operational risk, and overall costs now exert greater influence on the specification of grinding equipment. As a result, innovative alternatives to conventional grinding mill structures, supports, drives, feed, and discharge configurations are now being offered and selected with greater frequency. This paper investigates these trends in grinding mill technology, utilizing optimization and decision-theory techniques. In particular, the paper considers how specific advances in process design, product engineering, manufacturing techniques, and mining operations continue to relax technological constraints, enabling further mill innovation. In this context, a methodology is presented, illustrating how proper selection and specification of grinding mill components and configuration can target an optimization of the four End-User performance measures listed above..

AN unusually interesting meeting devoted to the discussion of the ways and means of improving coal mining practice, through the larger use of machinery underground, was held in the Auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building on March 11. The meeting was organized by the Materials Handling Division of the A. S. M. E. and held under the auspices of the Metropolitan Section of that Society and the National Coal Association. The New York Section of the A. I. M. E., which had been invited to participate, found itself unable to do so formally because of a conflicting date for its March meeting but informally did its part to aasure the success of the meeting. As a result of the discussion at and preceding the meeting, the National Coal Association, through Walter Barnum, chairman of its research committee, has asked the A. S. M. E. and A. I. M. E. to join the Association in a study of the present problems of the bituminous coal industry. Messrs. Harry L. Gandy, Calvin W. Rice and H. Foster Bain have been selected to act as a committee which shall develop plans for a joint program.

The patent issued to Sulman, Pickard, and Ballot, November 6, 1905, and assigned to Minerals Separation and Minerals Separation American Syndicate, for new and useful improvements in ore concen- tration, its object being to separate metalliferous matter from gangue by means of oils and fatty acids that have a preferential affinity for such metalliferous matter, the principal feature of which is "agitat- ing the mixture to cause the oil-coated mineral to form a froth," was clearly anticipated by other patents, and each step in the process described in the Sulman, Pickard, and Ballot patent is fully described in more than one of the prior patents, with the single exception of the reduced quantity of oil used; but the discovery that the small fraction of oil is sufficient to produce flotation of the metalliferous matter can not be made by itself or in combination, the subject of a patent. Systematic flooding was introduced into Nowata County, Okla., in May 1931. The results of this means of stimulating the nearly depleted Bartlesville reservoir in the county has been the subject of four Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations.2-5/ This report presents a discussion of four full-scale water-flooding projects in the Delaware-Childers field and 1 pilot project in the Curl Creek field (fig. 1). All five plants have been in operation for only a few months. Although substantial increases in the rates of oil production have been obtained 1 by the injection of water, the projects are of particular interest at this time because of the novel methods of operation and new equipment that are being employed. One project utilizes a portable "package" plant designed for a pilot operation. All of the controls for this project are centrally located. The design makes it possible to remove the test plant to another location if the project is unsuccessful or if the unit is to be replaced by a larger plant. This project also utilizes diatomaceous-earth filters successfully for the first time and makes use of plastic pipe. Another novel feature of the operation is the aeration of Arbuckle limestone water through an airlift in the supply well.

The Bureau of Mines and the Alabama. Power Co. jointly conducted a first experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala., during the fall and winter of 1946-47. This preliminary experiment showed that it was not difficult to maintain combustion of coal underground, and that coal in place could be completely gasified. It was noted that the high temperature developed by the gasification of coal in place brought about changes in overlying strata that appeared to be favorable to the process. The high temperatures caused the roof rock to become plastic, to expand, and to settle down on the mine floor directly behind the reacting coke face. These results were promising enough to warrant further investigation of the process. It was believed that if this action could be controlled properly with roofs of similar composition, it would tend to force the gas-making fluids underground against the coal faces. Plans for the second experiment were based in part on this favor-able roof action, and the successful operation of the planned initial straightline passages depended on this fact. Gorgas was chosen as the site for the second experiment for the following reasons: A tract of coal land of sufficient size was available and isolated from the main body of coal; the roof rock was similar in composition to that encountered in the first experiment; and the overlying strata were thick enough to eliminate some of the operating difficulties that had been encountered, In addition, power, water, and machine-shop facilities as well as an adequate supply of labor were available in this area, and the friendly cooperation of the Alabama Power Co. further recommended this site for the planned experiment.

SUDBURY ore processed by International Nickel Co. of Canada Ltd. was recovered for many years as two mill concentrates, one primarily of copper, and the other mixed pentlandite-pyrrhotite, But, Since iron content of the nickeliferous pyrrhotite concentrate was ten times its nickel value, capacity of smelting was limited by the need for slagging the excess iron. A process for recovering the iron con- tent was developed after some years of research and a $20-million plant was constructed to employ the new method. Built near Copper Cliff, Ont., the plant started operation early in 1956, scheduled for separate treatment of 365,000 tons of pyrrhotite each year. It is only the first unit of an installation which will have a capacity of more than 1 million tons per year of pyrrhotite. By early 1958, production totaled more than 200,000 long tons of 68 pct Fe pellets containing 0.003 pct P, 1.5 pct SiO2, 0.01 pct S, and 0.15 pct Ni.

FOR many years Industrial Minerals, or as they were formerly called, 'the Non-Metallic Minerals', compared with the metallics, were considered of only minor importance and as such were given scant attention in the technical press as well as in the public press. Those days are, however, happily passing, and thanks, to an appreciable extent, to the constant endeavour of the Industrial Minerals Section of this Institute, established in the fall of 1932 industrial minerals are now assuming the importance to which they are entitled. The term 'Industrial Minerals', when first adopted in this sense by the Institute, was thought to be original in its application, but it is interesting to note that it had been used many years previously by the Queensland Geological Survey in the following publication: SALT Article 1 in Industrial Minerals by B. DUNSTAN, Chief Government Geologist (Publication No. 268, in Part) Queensland Geological Survey, Department of Mines, Brisbane 1920 In Queensland, however, the term embraced some of the metals as well as the non-metallic minerals proper. The lead furnished by Canada in this matter bore rapid fruit, and already the term 'Industrial Minerals' is widely used, not only throughout Canada but in the United States as well.

In India, demand for coal exceeds its countrywide supply, despite its natural abundance, due to failure to achieve high production targets, especially in opencast mines, which are responsible for 94.98% of total raw coal production within the country. Employment of technological solutions, such as surface miners, is key to achieving higher coal production and productivity in an eco-friendly manner, especially in the populated areas adjacent to the mining zone and, hence, require restricted blasting operations. It eliminates blast hole drilling, blasting, and primary crushing units, thus reducing related environmental hazards like ground vibration and fly rocks. This paper encompasses the applicability, advantages, constructional features, and performance assessment models for each working mode of a surface miner. The current paper discusses the correlation between coal production and key productivity indicators, namely, machine shift-time, pick, and diesel consumption of surface miner in three different geo-mining conditions. Furthermore, relationships between machine shift-time, pick, and diesel consumption of surface miner and coal production were evaluated through bivariate regression analyses along with their coefficient of determination. These key productivity indicators of surface miner follow polynomial relationships with coal production on a daily and monthly basis, having Pearson correlation values from 0.774 to 0.907 and coefficient of determination, from 0.664 to 0.909 in opencast coal mines.

South Africa holds approximately 70% of the world’s total chrome reserves. Chromium is an important raw material for the production of stainless steel and ferrochrome alloys. Over the years, China’s ferrochrome market has been dependent on chrome ore imports from South Africa. In 2018, China imported about 75% of its chrome ore from South Africa. With the low platinum price and the rising demand for stainless steel, a growing demand to evaluate new beneficiation technologies for fine chromite was identified. Gravity separation of fine chromite (<75 μm) is inefficient, due to the limitations of the technology to upgrade fine particle size distributions. Potential for the recovery of chromite, specifically fines (<75μm), lost to UG2 PGM flotation tails, but also from MG and LG6 spiral circuit tailings exist. Flotation of podiform chromite ores from India and Kazhkhstan is successful in generating saleable product grade, following acid or alkaline flotation routes. Application to South African stratiform chromite is being evaluated, with the emphasis on evaluating reagent type, optimising dosages and the effect of pH in optimising flotation performance. Flotation can unlock additional value from chromite tailings material. The effect of ore characteristics such as gangue mineralogy, particle size distribution and headgrade are reported. The performance in terms of product quality and yield are evaluated and compared. The impact of this paper will not only prolong life of mine and increase revenue but will also alleviate environmental burdens associated with tailings dams. High specification Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) has been successfully applied to conveyed flows at iron ore operations since 2002 to representatively measure ore quality for improved quality management and process control. While the PGNAA technique has changed little since that time, significant improvements have been made in measurement capability. Elements previously unable to be measured well or at all using this technique are now measurable and one of these is phosphorus. Aluminium and magnesium are also key elements in addition to calcium and silicon in determining sinter basicity in ironmaking. Other elements measured routinely in iron ores include iron, carbon, potassium, sulfur and manganese. The benefits of representative measurement cannot be overstated as iron ore mining operations in South Africa, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Americas have discovered. The technology is applicable to any conveyed flow where elemental analysis in real time assists with quality management, from raw materials in ironmaking through to scrap steel in steelmaking and coal quality for coke-making. Major benefits are realised when raw material processing is optimised and this often includes diversion of material meeting a required quality so it can bypass unnecessary processing. This includes waste rock which can be diverted from a plant feed stream in 30 sec increments or ore that meets product quality being diverted to bypass beneficiation. Analysers are successfully utilised to identify ore types that assist with upgrade optimisation in jig plants; measuring feed, product and discard flows to also account for metal content. Product flows to stockpiles help manage production flows and stockpile qualities for different products and assist in blending ores into trains or ships to confirm specification compliance. Technologies can be used in magnetite processing but are predominantly used in hematite and goethite ore processing operations. The paper details examples of the above applications at various operational sites providing estimates of economic benefit as well as operational improvements.

During operations, mining and metallurgical processes may generate effluents such as tailings water, acid mine drainage (AMD) and seepage and process acid streams. Depending on the type of ore and the metallurgical process, these effluents may contain one or more toxic compounds (eg acidity or alkalinity, cyanide, ammonia and/or nitrate, heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), sulfate) in elevated concentrations requiring treatment before their discharge to the environment or recycle/reuse in the process. Natural oxidation of sulfide minerals present in mining wastes (eg tailings and waste rock) at mining sites may generate AMD, which is characterised as a low pH, high acidity effluent containing heavy metals and sulfate. If generation of AMD cannot be controlled and/or prevented, AMD needs to be collected and treated for neutralisation of acidity and reduction of metals and TSS to meet regulated water quality standards. It is important to note that some of these compounds may persist in run-off from mine sites, even after the mine and processing facilities are decommissioned. Treatment of mining and metallurgical process effluents can be accomplished by means of various physical, chemical and/or biological methods. The mode of process application may vary from the use of either specifically designed, controlled and automated facilities or passive systems. Lime neutralisation and precipitation is the most common method used in the mining industry to treat AMD. To reduce the problems associated with disposal and long-term storage of the resulting sludge, the use of a high-density sludge process (HDS) has become a preferred option. The use of other chemical reagents, waste or by-products from other industries, and biological sulfate reduction methods can also be considered as viable options for site-specific situations. Recently, several passive treatment systems have been designed and successfully operated, even in the cold North American climate. This paper will discuss available options and provide insights for selecting a suitable method for a given situation using case studies from projects conducted by Golder Associates around the world over the last decade.

"Why do some room and pillar retreat panels encounter abnormal conditions? What factors deserve the most consideration during the planning and execution phases of mining and what can be done to mitigate those abnormal conditions when they are encountered? To help answer these questions, and to determine some of the relevant factors influencing the conditions of room and pillar (R&P) retreat mining entries, four consecutive R&P retreat panels were evaluated. This evaluation was intended to reinforce the influence of topographic changes, depth of cover, multiple-seam interactions, geological conditions, and mining geometry.This paper details observations made in four consecutive R&P retreat panels and the data collected from an instrumentation site during retreat mining. The primary focus was on the differences observed among the four panels and within the panels themselves. The instrumentation study was initially planned to evaluate the interactions between primary and secondary support, but produced rather interesting results relating to the loading encountered under the current mining conditions. In addition to the observation and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to evaluate the stress conditions. Both the LaModel 3.0 and Rocscience Phase2 programs were used to evaluate these four panels. The results of both models indicated a drastic reduction in the vertical stresses experienced in these panels due to the full extraction mining in overlying seams when compared to the full overburden load. Both models showed a higher level of stress associated with the outside entries of the panels. These results agree quite well with the observations and instrumentation studies performed at the mine.These efforts provided two overarching conclusions concerning R&P retreat mine planning and execution. The first was that there are four areas that should not be overlooked during R&P retreat mining: topographic relief, multiple-seam stress relief, stress concentrations near the gob edge, and geologic changes in the immediate roof. The second is that in order to successfully retreat an R&P panel, a three-phased approach to the design and analysis of the panel should be conducted: the planning phase, evaluation phase, and monitoring phase."

This report discusses the evaluation of the ENVIRO-CLEAN PROCESS, a technology developed by Lewis Environmental Services, Inc. for the recovery of metals such as chromium, mercury, copper, cadmium, lead, and zinc from surface and groundwater streams. This new heavy metal removal process (patent-pending) utilizes granular activated carbon with a proprietary conditioning pretreatment to enhance heavy metal adsorption combined with electrolytic metal recovery to produce a saleable metallic product. The process generates no sludge or hazardous waste and the effluent meets EPA limits. A 50 gpm system was installed for recovering hexavalent chromium from a ground water stream at a site located in Fresno, California. The effluent from the activated carbon system was reinjected into the ground water table with the hexavalent chromium concentration < 10 ppb. The system simultaniously removed trichloroethylene (TCE) to concentrations levels < 0.5 ppb. The activated carbon is regenerated off-site and the chromium electrolytically recovered. The full scale system has treated over 5 million gallons of ground water since installation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the nature and frequency of coal mine roof failure beneath valleys. A mechanism for this failure and suggestions for controlling this problem are presented. Hazardous roof conditions identified in some mines were positively correlated with mining activities beneath stream valleys. Mine maps with overlays of unstable roof and locations of stream valleys show that 52 pct of the instances of all unstable roof in the surveyed mines occurred directly beneath the bottom-most part of the valley. The survey also showed that broad, flat-bottomed valleys were more likely to be sites of hazardous roof than narrow-bottomed valleys. Evidence of valley stress relief was found beneath several valleys in the form of bedding plane faults and low-angle thrust faults. This type of failure, previously believed to be only a shallow phenomena, was found at mining depths as great as 300 ft. In situ, horizontal stress measurements beneath a valley and the adjacent hillsides, confirmed valley stress relief. Numerical analysis of 13 valleys overlying one mine property showed the effect of the valley excavation on horizontal and vertical stress.

This presentation in the open pit session deals with the development of a phosphate rock strip mine by CF Industries, Inc., a company that does not presently mine in the Central Florida Phosphate District. Land acquisition, engineering, financing and environmental permitting activities were begun in early 1975; site preparation, environmental monitoring and dragline construction began in mid-1975. The operation is due on-stream in late 1978. The reserve acquisition, permitting, and financing could each easily be developed into a separate paper of interest. Each, however, has been covered before for other mining ventures with similar capital and environment requirements. For that reason, I have chosen to discuss what CF Industries, Inc. is, why it is entering this new sec-tor of the agricultural chemicals business, and, to keep at least some technical basis, what design modifications are possible when the total mine output is used captively and it is unnecessary to have the flexibility to meet the numerous transportation and customer specification considerations. In an attempt to show the size and complexity of the CF organization, a brief description of existing facilities should help show why the big interest in mining phosphate rock.

To finalize the three years granted for the study of miners physiological responses to emergency situations, all the data obtained, were summarized into the following relevant sections; A.. Information on elements of the Man Test required under Subpart 4, Part 2, Title 30 in the Code of Federal Regulation (see Table M-T and Ref. I., Section A). B. Investigation on possible emergency activities, its simulation in the laboratory and the physiologic data obtained on miners performing them This included some studies under cool ambient conditions, expected to prevail in coal mines. C. While in section B the steady state responses have been obtained, time was devoted to establish a unit that will allow data gathering for non-steady state, i.e., transient responses to rapidly changing activities. Section B and C contained elements that were relevant to section A; the Man Test. Therefore some of the information described under section A Man Test, were actually measured during the battery of tests in either section B or in section C.

Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

On June 14, 2023 Jay Dee Contractors’ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) “Phoenix” holed through and completed mining the second drive of the I-75 Segment 3 Storage and Drainage Tunnel. Completion of the tunnel came only after overcoming several challenges, including a groundwater intrusion event which deposited thousands of cubic yards of wet ground material into the tunnel. This paper will discuss the events which delayed completion of the tunnel by over nine months, the risk management and construction approaches assumed by the Design-Build team during bid, several challenges faced by Design-Build teams when building stormwater resilience tunnels using traditional Department of Transportation standards, and recommendations for improving risk allocation and proposal documents for future similar Design-Build tunnel projects.

"Leaching process has been suggested to recover most metals from waste PWBs. In this study, the leaching behavior of most metals present in waste PWBs is evaluated before and thermal treatment. Different leaching acids: hydrochloric acid (HCl), nitric acid (HNO3) and aqua regia are compared. The effects of acid concentration, particle size of sample, leaching time and temperature are examined. Results revealed that most metals are present in small particle size and sequential leaching of PWBs with a combination of HCl acid and aqua regia is capable of dissolving most of the metals content of PWBs. Leaching of thermally treated PWBs produced the highest leaching percentages for similar leaching conditions.IntroductionApproximately 20–50 million tonnes of electronic waste (e-waste) is produced globally per year. Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) or E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world. In developed countries, it equals 1% of total solid waste on an average [1]. The growing stockpile of used and obsolete consumer electronics has been called the “largest toxic waste problem of the 21st century [2]. Printed wiring boards (PWBs) is an essential part of almost all WEEE, and accounts approximately 3% of all WEEE by weight [3]. PWBs are a platform upon which microelectronic components are mounted. PWBs contain metals (~40 wt. %), ceramics (~30 wt. %) and plastics (~30 wt. %) [4]. The metallic part includes; Cu, Pb, Zn, Fe, Cd, Be, Cr, Au, Pt, Pd, Ag, etc. The plastic part of the PWBs is mostly epoxy resins. These plastic resins also contain very toxic halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) [5]."
