"This presentation will provide information and facts on the drilling and blasting within a frozen shaft using a full face methodology. The Author will briefly discuss the history of the sinking of a frozen shaft in Saskatchewan, the challenges faced, and the solutions delivered. The case study will include a discussion describing the series of events that led to the decision to adopt a full face blasting methodology. The case study will describe key elements such as the drilling pattern, hole size and depth, explosive products and blast vibration monitoring systems. INTRODUCTION During the shaft sinking process at a project in Saskatchewan, it was recommended that a drill & blast benching method be utilized. Following an evaluation of the site, the geological conditions proved amenable to a ground freezing system that would stabilize the rock formations and prevent inflows of water into the shaft (Table 1).The shaft sinking process required that the ground surrounding the proposed shaft be frozen by drilling several near vertical freeze holes radially at a specified distance from the edge of the proposed shaft excavation. This would allow for the circulation of a chilled brine solution down the freeze holes. The circulation is achieved by means of stainless steel pipes encased within each other to provide a delivery and return conduit for the brine (Figure 1). As a result of this periphery freezing, the ground within the shaft excavation is also predominately frozen.The finished internal diameter of the shaft was 5.5 meters with varying overall excavation diameters to facilitate different liner designs used for various rock formations. For the most part, the fully unsupported/unfinished excavated diameter of the shaft varied from 6.9 meters to 8.5 meters depending on the zone excavated. The challenge was that the proposed drill and blast excavation method posed a significant risk due to the potential to damage the freeze wall and pipes during blasting. The decision was made to commence the excavation through mechanical excavation (i.e. chip and cut) methods then change to a drill and blast method utilizing a split benching design. Through this process, the team encountered five main challenges: 1. Sub-horizontal geological structures and slips that affected blasting performance and sometimes resulted in a sloping surface to the top of the bench; 2. Confined working area for the crews and equipment due to a limited work area as a result of utilizing the split (half) bench drill and blast methodology; 3. Mechanical chipping and cutting of the one-meter buffer zone to the final shaft diameter; 4. Crews working on extremely slippery uneven frozen rock and ice surfaces, which affected safety and efficiency; 5. Establishing a blast vibration monitoring system to determine if the drilling and blasting of the full shaft excavation diameter were acceptable."

Oxidizing catalytic converters are sometimes used by underground mine operators as an emission control device to reduce odor, hydrocarbon (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions from diesel equipment. The objectives of this report are to quantitatively assess the effects of catalytic converters on diesel exhaust emissions and to make recommendations for their use. Information in this report is from a literature survey and contract research supported by the Bureau of Mines. Catalytic converters are effective in reducing CO, HC, and odors when the exhaust temperature is high enough so that the converter remains above 250° C. Converter temperature is dependent upon engine duty cycle. Catalytic converters increse sulfate emissions and slightly in- crease oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. If low sulfur fuels are not used, the increase in sulfate and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions can offset any advantages of the catalytic converter as measured by the emissions quality index (EQI). In addition, in vitro bioassays have shown that catalytic converters produce soluble organic compounds, which have increased mutagenic activity with respect to untreated exhaust. Based upon criteria recommended by a joint Canadian-United States research panel, catalytic converters should only be used in special circumstances in underground mines. Vehicles equipped with catalytic converters should operate under moderate to heavy load conditions, and use fuel with a sulfur content less than 0.1 pct.

The Cawse nickel project is a new generation pressure acid leach (PAL), solvent extraction and electrowinning process used to produce LME grade nickel metal and cobalt sulphide concentrate containing 40 per cent cobalt by treating nickel and cobalt oxide ores from a lateritic ultramafic profile. The project is located 50 kilometres NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. The commercial success of the Cawse nickel operation is dependent in part upon the ability of the principal ore type to be beneficiated. A simple process of rejecting lower grade material on the basis of particle size achieves this. The process is called upgrading and allows subgrade material to become commercial ore grade and also allows higher ore grades to be processed in the early parts of the operation. The success of the upgrade process is dependent upon the physical and chemical properties of the ore being processed and the nickel grade of the ore. The upgrade ore type represents >80 per cent of the Cawse nickel resource and is hosted mostly within a limonite unit, represented by goethitic clays in the upper saprolite zone. In the upgrade processing circuit the ore is crushed and slurried. It is then passed over a series of screens that remove all material over 0.5 mm. This ensures that coarse material is removed from the main ore stream. Upgrade is reliant on selectively rejecting lower grade or barren material, which can include silica, magnesite and relict saprock. To predict leach feedgrade, the grade control estimates the head grade and upgrade percentage for all ore delivered to the run of mine ore pad. To do this reverse circulation (RC) drill holes are logged for ore type, assayed for a range of elements and undergo simulated upgrade testwork. The percentage and grade of material rejected through the upgrade circuit has the most influence on upgrade per cent. This reject is determined by the physical properties of the rock mass and drum scrubber parameters. The correlation between nickel upgrade and reject can be established to predict upgrade from the known mass reject. Parcels of upgrade ore milled to date closely follow projected correlation trends. Upgrade circuit results have been excellent, with average nickel grades upgrading by 34 per cent, cobalt by 23 per cent, with 55 per cent mass passing.

The Age-hardening Cu-Cr alloys are extensively used in integrated circuit lead frame, railway contact wire, resistance welding electrode and continuous casting mold copper plate, owing to having an excellent combination of high electrical or thermal conductivity and high strength. High temperature performance is very important during the service process. Effect of Magnesium and Zirconium on softening behavior of Cr-Cr alloy are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). During the softening process in the Cu-Cr alloy, the recrystallization process, grain growth and Cr precipitates coarsening are observed. The addition of Mg or Zr to the Cu-Cr alloy, the resistance to elevated temperature can be significantly improved, owing to being restrained the growth of the precipitates by segregating along precipitates surface. INTRODUCTION Age-hardening Cu-Cr system alloys can be widely uesed in many fileds such as electrodes for spot welding (Hatakeyama et al., 2008; Cheng, Shen & Yu, 2013; Zhou et al., 2016; Chbihi, Sauvage & Blavette, 2012), intergrated circuit lead frame (Hatakeyama et al., 2008; Cheng, Shen & Yu, 2013; Zhou et al., 2016; Liu et al., 2006; Pang et al., Xia et al., 2012; Wang et al., 2009; Huang et al., 2003; Cheng, Yu & Shen, 2014; Zhang et al., 2016; Li et al., 2007) and railway contact wire (Cheng, Shen & Yu, 2013; Zhou et al., 2016; Chbihi, Sauvage & Blavette, 2012; Liu et al., 2006; Pang et al., Xia et al., 2012; Wang et al., 2009; Huang et al., 2003), because it has high strength, good electrical and thermal conductivity. The precipitation behavior of binary or ternary Cu-Cr alloys had been investigated by many researchers (Chbihi, Sauvage & Blavette, 2012; Peng et al., 2017; Batra et al., 2002). In addition, to obtain additional mechanical properties without much deterioration in electrical conductivity, trace addition of alloying elements like Zr, Ag, rare metals (Y and Ce) and Mg are added into Cu-Cr alloy. The addition Mg to Cu-Cr alloy accelerated the process of precipitates nucleation and restrained the growth of the precipitates by segregating along precipitates surface during aging, which enhanced the stability of the deformation microstructure and improved the mechanical properties of the alloy (Zhao et al., 2018). Additional zirconium in Cu-Cr alloy enhances the strength by the decrease in inter-precipitate spacing of Cr precipitates and the formation of Cu5Zr phase (Chihiro, Ryoichi & Kazue, 2008). Owing to the decrease in inter-precipitation spacing of Cr precipitates and to the Ag-atom-drag effect on dislocation motion, the addition of Ag can increase in strength, stress relaxation resistance and without much deterioration in electrical conductivity (Chihiro, Ryoichi & Kazue, 2008). The enhance in strength and electrical conductivity of the Cu-Cr-Zr alloy by adding Ce and Y elements are attributed to removing oxygen and sulfur from as-cast alloy (Li et al., 2006). However, the effect of Mg or Zr element on microstructure and properties of Cu-Cr alloy during the softening process are not clear. Therefore, Microstructure evolution and properties of a Cu-Cr systems alloy were investigated in detail by OM and TEM. The Relationship between microstructure and properties of Cu-Cr systems alloy was also discussed.

The paper studied the diffusion process of nitrogen and characteristic distribution of iron impurities in the bottom of cast crystalline silicon ingot along the direction of crystal growth. According to the dynamics analysis of the decomposition of Si3N4 coating, the diffusion process of nitrogen into multicrystalline silicon ingot during casting process should be divided into three steps. The diffusion length of nitrogen in multicrystalline silicon ingot is 700 μm. The results of EDS analysis indicate that the distribution characteristic of iron in multicrystalline silicon ingot is concerned with the diffusion process of nitrogen in this length. Based on the above research results, the distribution model of iron in casting multicrystalline silicon ingot was established and verified by the experimental results.

A critical demand exists to develop new mineral resources, and the need for exploration techniques to supplement costly test drilling is becoming; more acute. In the past few years more industries have begun experimenting with geophysical methods to locate and define mineral deposits and delineate reserves. The new techniques have proven profitable in many instances. As a part of a broad long range program to study the mineral resources of Alabama, and in response to requests from land owners and mining companies, the Geological Survey of Alabama is investi¬gating the occurrence of bauxite and kaolin deposits in the Eufeula area. This project is supported by special funds appropriated for this purpose by the Alabama Legislature.

Some of the historical background of the industry is reviewed, with reference to the different types of reduction cells in use for aluminum smelting. Factors to be considered in cell des1gn involve capital, power, and operating costs. The trend is apparently toward larger cells. The industry is studying new construction materials for cell linings, as well as alternate electrolyte compositions and other design changes which will improve productivity and energy efficiency. The aluminum smelting activity in other countries is briefly reviewed. TODA Y'S industrial production of aluminum is still based on the simultaneous discoveries made in 1886 by Charles Martin Hall in Ohio, and Paul Heroult in France. Up to that date, only about 50 tons of aluminum had been produced in the world, and the price at that time was about $5 per pound. Sucl1 figures must be contrasted with the present world aluminum smelting capacity of over five mil-lion tons per year, and a price of about 25 cents per pound.

Barite (BaS04) is an industrial mineral with hundreds of uses. It is primarily used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. This use comprised approximately 97% of U.S. barite consumption in 1981. Barite is found in three types of deposits: bedded, residual, and vein. Bedded deposits, because of their relatively large tonnage, have been the principle target of explorationists. Increased demand for barite in the mid to late seventies prompted many companies to significantly expand their efforts in barite exploration. Barite exploration techniques currently range from outcrop walking and geochemical exploration to gravity and seismic surveys.

"In this work, the combination of microwave drying (MWD) and heat pump drying (HPD) drying experiments were designed by response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) using design expert software (Version 7.15), and the process parameters were optimized. The conditions given by software are: the MWD time is 4.6 or 4.4 min; the HPD time is 9.0 or 8.6 min; and the sample mass is 620 or 600 g. Under those conditions the moisture content is 1.0 10-2kg water/kg wet basis, and the effectiveness ratio is 0.70 kg water/kwh. The results of confirmatory experiments conducted under the optimized conditions show the combined drying have superiority of decrease of energy consumption and increase of handling capacity over the single MWD or HPD.1 IntroductionSilica sand is one of a silicate mineral with properties as hard, anti-friction and less reactive, commonly used as raw material for foundry and construction. The silica sand obtained from mineral dressing processes such as scrubbing, magnetic separation and flotation. Its moisture content is approximately 0.08~0.12 kg water/kg wet basis. The most common methods used for drying are solar drying and hot air drying. But these methods have some shortcomings: for example, the solar drying has longer process time due to low energy yield, [1] hot air drying has low-energy efficiency and a lengthy drying time. [2]Microwave is electromagnetic waves with frequency are 300MHz to 300GHz. The outstanding features of microwave heating are rapidity and selectivity. The water specific inductive capacity of 60~78 is much bigger than common materials, the moisture always quickly absorb electromagnetic wave and rapidly transfer to vapors. So, it can significant reduce the drying time. [3] Heat pumps (HPs) are devices for raising the temperature of low grade heat energy to a more useful level using a relatively small amount of high grade energy."

Thermodynamic calculations for antimony and its compounds have been hampered by the lack of adequate basic thermal data; much work rains even to fill the more important gaps. This paper supplies heat and free energy of formation values at 298.15° K, for the sesquioxide and tetroxide, based upon new measurements conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The heats of formation were obtained by combustion (bomb) calorimetry, and the free energies of formation were obtained by combination of heat and entropy data. The new values are believed to substantially improve the accuracy of thermodynsunic considerations involving these oxides.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research in an attempt to provide a more sound basis for recommending improved artificial support during deepening of the main shaft of the Lucky Friday mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of northern Idaho. Field measurements of closure across the short axis of the 13-by 26-foot shaft were as high as 16 inches. Elastic/plastic finite-element (F/E) analyses were made, reducing the values of large-scale in situ rock mass properties until field closure measurements generally corresponded to displacements in the F/E analyses. Resulting plots of rock mass displacements, stresses, and areas of plastic failure display the results of creating openings (shaft, in this case) in deep mines in difficult ground conditions requiring artificial support.

"Prevalence of lung disease in younger miners surprised industry regulators, congressional members, researchers and black lung clinic staff members. Mitigation researcher focused on low-coal mining in the Appalachian regions until Miners Colfax Medical Center (MCMC) Black Lung Clinic examinations discovered 25 of 72 Wyoming coal miners with lung disease. To reverse recent upward trend in lung disease, research programatic have been directed at reducing exposure to respirable “float” dust. This paper suggests broadening the scope of research to include boundary detection in efforts to improve outcomes. Beginning with a better understanding of biochemistry of anaerobic bacteria methylation processes precipitating sulfur and heavy metals into thin seam boundary layers. Expanding research and development objective to focused on minimization of bit-pick crushing cone volume and preventing mining thin boundary coal layers and out-of-seam dilution. Black lung clinical evaluations of miner will confirm outcomes directed towards reduced occupational disease and smoke stack emissions. INTRODUCTION Miner exposer to bit-tip crushing cone volume, fragmentation and auger movement generated respirable “float” dust and boiler emissions are related science-technology –engineering-mathematics (STEM) problems. Formidable but not intractable problems are driven by oxidation of upper flood plain elements in the periodic table and biochemical metabolic presses occurring in coal basin. Because of burial compaction, quartz and trace heavy metals (Fe2+, Mg2+) are concentrated in thin seam boundary layers. By not cutting through thin boundary coal layer and out-of-seam into hard quartz containing rock layers, miner lung disease and smoke stack emissions are minimized. Cutting bit-pick elastic wave hydrodynamic principle force vectors in the coal layer must be aligned to minimize respirable dust generation, constrained by fragmentation size. Dust abatement by water spray and machine design are effective; but for, failure to address cutting cone dust volume generation and its distribution along run-of-mine (ROM) transportation systems the boiler. Real-time precision thickness measurements by integrated cutting drum (icDrum) sensor, machine man-interdiction from a dust free control room, is a cost effective way to prevents respirable dust exposure. The recommended STEM research and demonstration initiative addresses issues raised by discoveries of increased rate of lung disease discovered in young miners and concerns over emissions from coal-fired electric generation stations (Global Warming). In-mine demonstrations must be validated by on-site MCMC mobile Black Lung Clinic data acquisition and analysis."

Before we can attempt to answer the question of what can be expected from coal research, let us examine why research is done in other fields and what others expect for the money they spend on research and development. Up to 1900 almost all organized research was carried out at universities. Most of the support came from the university, and by present standards the amount of research was extremely small. The motivation for university research was basically discovery of new phenomena, with the objective of advancing knowledge. Side by, side with this organized effort was that of individual inventors who were primarily responsible for applying this new-found knowledge to useful purposes. During this period inventors were rarely supported by anyone, and experimentation was carried out either in their spare time or at the expense of earning a living. Men like Edison, I believe, were the first to demonstrate on a large scale that one could systematically apply newly discovered scientific principles to inventions that would serve useful purposes and would return a profit to those engaged in the effort. The tremendous expansion in research therefore began with the realization and demonstration that the scientific discovered could be applied in such a way as to return a' handsome profit to those who invested in it. The motivation of many of the research personnel however, remained the satisfaction associated with new discoveries, The money to support their efforts came from those interested in a return on their investments. Since the First World War and a rapidly accelerating rate since the Second World War another important motive for supporting research has appeared--the needs associated with national defense; this type of research has been supported almost exclusively by the Government.

"Pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field have been applied to the bainite transformation of Cr5 steel. Three groups of experiments were conducted. In the first group, ordinary resistance furnace was used for heat treatment. The Cr5 specimens were rapidly heated up to austenitization temperature 940 °C, held for 20 min, air cooled to bainite transformation temperature 350 °C, held for 10, 20, or 40 min and then air cooled to room temperature. The second and the third group shared the same temperature-time curve with that of the first group, but their heat resources came from the Joule heat produced by pulsed current. 1.5 T pulsed magnetic field was exerted on the third group specimens when they were held at 350 °C, but the second group specimens did not undergo the treatment of magnetic field. It was found that both pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field obviously retarded the bainite transformation. The phenomena were discussed in terms ofliterature results.IntroductionApplying pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field technology are very pronnsmg ways to change the microstructure of materials by affecting the phase transformation process. People had found that pulsed current dramatically influences the behaviors of materials, for example, electromigration effect [l], the solidification of metals and alloys [2, 3], electroplasticity [4, 5], crystallization of amorphous alloys [6], healing of metal materials [7] and so on. As to pulsed magnetic field technology, a lot of effort had been spent on grain refinement in solidification of metals [8, 9], recrystallization of cold-worked metals and alloys [10] and Fe-based alloys solid-state phase transformation [11, 12]. Though application of pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field technology have proliferated in recent years, investigation on their effects on solid/solid phase transformation, especially bainite transformation, is lacking. The aim of this paper is to show the effects of pulsed current treatment (C-T) and the combined treatment of pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field (CM-T) on bainite transformation of commercial Cr5 steel"

Two 8.2 m diameter flood control tunnels are being constructed in the Taylor Shale Formation beneath San Antonio, Texas. These tunnels use precast concrete segments as final lining. This paper describes the features of the segments chosen for this project. The tunnels are being excavated with a hybrid Tunnel Boring Machine. This paper also describes the features of the TBM which make the machine compatible to the type of segments chosen.

The relative abundance of coal in India compared to other fossil fuels makes it a natural choice as the primary source of fuel, be it for steel making, power generation or for other uses. The wide variations in nature and type of Indian coals formed during lower Gondawana period and categorized as difficult-to-wash due to its typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix call for suitable beneficiation techniques as the preferred option for quality upgradation. The good quality coking coals of the upper seams are fast depleting leaving behind the inferior quality lower seam coal. The lower seam coals presently being mined are mostly low volatile coking coal (LVC). They constitute about 50% of the total coking coal reserves in India. The beneficiation of Low Volatile Coking coals pose a major challenge and detailed R & D studies was taken up to study the beneficiation characteristics of these coals. The studies revealed that the liberation characteristics at coarser sizes are very poor and the coal is to be ground to finer sizes for liberation. The most important factor that determines coal cleaning efficiency is liberation of organic matter from mineral matter. To achieve liberation grinding is necessary as a result range amount of ultra fines (-0.063 mm) coal is generated. Presence of these large amount of ultrafine in the coal fines, often impose severe technical constraints affecting not only its floatability but also in the downstream treatment of the products like dewatering and cake formation particularly when it is beneficiating through froth flotation. In the present paper optimization of ultra fines (-0.063 mm) has been tried for a LVC coal of Jharia coal field for the better liberation and beneficiation of the above coal fines. It is observed that by optimized, combination of size and number of balls generation of fines can be controlled with liberation. Keywords: coking coal, liberation, floatability, dewatering

PRESIDENT MARKS: We have a letter from Mr. Frank N. Cameron, of the Utah Fuel Company, that perhaps I had better read to you. It is addressed to Mr. Shubart, Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (hands letter to Secretary Shubart). UTAH FUEL COMPANY MINE SUPERINTENDENT Castle Gate, Utah, February 9, 1926 Mr. F. N. Cameron, Vice-President & General Manager, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Sir: It has now been about nine months since we started the system of having the fire bosses take charge of all shooting and gas inspections at the Castle Gate Mines. We had considerable trouble when we started. Like all other new systems which have been installed, this one was hard to get started and was criticised both by the miners and officials in our own organization, as well as by other organizations in the mines of this county. The older the official and miner was the stronger they seemed to be opposed to the new method. They have no arguments to offer against it, but they know it is not right "because their grandfather did not work it in that way." We know that when some of the other systems were started in the mines of this county, they were fought from all angles. The electrical shooting almost brought the miners at Sunnyside out on strike; their main argument was that they could not make a living if they had to obey the rules that the company was trying to enforce. They also claimed that they could not make enough coal for the day's work by only shooting once at the end of the shift. The same applies to the sprinkling the miners claimed that they would all die of some disease if they were forced to work in a sloppy, wet mine every day. The mining machine was another thing that was hard to install the miners claimed that the company was trying to rob the Door miner out of a chance to make living by installing mining machines to cut the coal. I do not think that the system we have at our mines is perfect-there is still room for improvement in the shooting and inspection of the mines, but I do really think that for safety and efficiency, the inspection department at our mines, working under the new system, is as good if not better than any other inspection department working under the old method in the other mines. I am giving some of the arguments in favor of the new system and would like to hear the arguments against it-if there are any. In cutting the men from monthly to day wages, I do not think it is only the company that benefits by the arrangement, but the fireboss is the one that gets the best of it by the change. How often have we heard the fireboss complain of the hours he had to put in just because he was a monthly man? Under the new wage scale he is paid for every hour he puts in the mines, and when the mines are working every day he makes considerable more than when he was being paid a monthly salary. When the mines are working slow, there is generally some work that has to be done on idle days, or in slow times the force could be cut to a point where some of the work could be done on idle days, and thus the fireboss could be given the preference in this extra work and in this way, his wage could be kept up to the standard monthly salary he was getting before. Despite an increasing focus by media, communities and activists driving an elevated regulatory focus in Australia and indeed some other mining jurisdictions, the mining industry globally has had limited successful mine lease relinquishments and transfers to support a next land use.Critique from anti-mining lobbyists frequently uses the large estimates from historically abandoned mine sites to influence risk-averse regulatory reforms to improve environmental performance. The mine rehabilitation regulatory processes in Australia, and specifically in the State of Queensland, are thus largely in place to prevent mining operators from abandoning their obligations.Regulatory responses to the lack of mine rehabilitation and closure performance in the last five to ten years have primarily focussed on compliance and enforcement of rehabilitation conditions in environmental approvals. Additionally, financial assurance measures have been tightened to protect against abandonment of rehabilitation obligations by the Industry, including the Chain of Responsibility legislation (Queensland Government, 2016b) in April 2016, to hold to account those who have benefitted from mining and processing/refining projects, and then avoid their environmental obligations.CITATION:Swart, P B and Erskine, P D, 2018. Manufacturer welded components may suffer from high level of residual stresses which can cause premature cracking and decrease the life of the components if they reach values close to the yield strength of the material. In the present work, a robotized hammer peening technique is simulated by an impact machine and the residual stresses generated by the indentation are measured. To better understand phenomena behind residual stresses relaxation by hammer peening, the impact energy level was changed. 304L steel plates were hammer peened with 10 impacts. The contact between the hammer and sample surface was always at the same location. The strains on the surface close to the impact location were recorded during the test using strain gauges to follow residual stresses variations. At the end of the test residual stresses were measured indepth using hole drilling technique at 8mm from the impact center. The micro-hardness was monitored to evaluate the affected zone by the hammer peening. This approach gave a good estimation of the energy and number of blows to be used for efficient relaxation of the manufactured parts.
