El Perú tiene un compromiso para reducir contaminación y emisiones —que nace en el Tratado de París del 2015— en atención al cual debe acelerar un cambio gradual en su matriz energética, encaminarse de forma eficiente hacia las energías limpias, y lograr un crecimiento sustentable y descentralizado. Como política de Estado, ello supone un planeamiento estratégico con metas de corto, mediano y largo plazo para construir una transición energética, que comienza por un uso eficiente y mayor del gas natural y las tecnologías renovables. El desafío implica manejar con sumo cuidado y prudencia los recursos naturales renovables y no renovables que el país tiene a su alcance, así como fortalecer el factor humano y tomar en cuenta los aspectos culturales y sociales vinculados con el manejo de los recursos. De acuerdo con el autor de este artículo, un primer paso en este cometido es la alfabetización ambiental y el planeamiento estratégico en la formulación de políticas públicas para promover el crecimiento sustentable de las actividades económicas. Hay que trabajar indicadores de monitoreo y calidad de la gestión, además de crear política rural, empoderar a la gente y articular políticas públicas sociales y económicas.

"The paper covers the design and implementation of an industrial dense medium cyclone plant for carbonaceous iron ore, the proving of efficiency as well as the development of a predictive model for plant control. The VA Erzberg GmbH mines about 12 Mio.t of carbonaceous rock ore at the “Steirische Erzberg”. Due to increased demand of the Austrian steel plants, the production of ore concentrate was raised by 30 % up to 3.0 Mio t/a during the last 5 years. One of the projects to realize the increase in capacity at improved concentrate quality was the implementation of a dense medium cyclone plant for the fine size fraction – 8 +1 mm replacing the former dry permanent magnetic drum separators. By physical separation the siderite variety “spateisenstein” (42% Fe) of a density of 3,8 g/cm³ is separated from ankerite (10 – 17% Fe), the second iron bearing carbonate with a density of 3,2 g/cm³, dolomite, calcite and silicate bearing schists. The feasibility of the process was proven by the test results obtained from a test rig, that was constructed and operated in close cooperation between the Chair of Mineral Processing, Montanuniversitaet Leoben and VA Erzberg GmbH. The density separation surpassed the efficiency of magnetic separation clearly shown by •- values. The plant performance tests (capacity 120 t/h) verify the cut densities defined by Tromp T50 -values and the assigned efficiency found in the pilot tests at varied settings of media density, pressure drop, cone angle and apex diameter. The test rig as well as the final process will be presented. In order to create a tool to predict the performance of the DMS in the centrifugal field at various settings for varying feed composition the experimental results from size and density testing are analyzed in a modified way to obtain physically justified, smooth approximations for the performance curves. Models developed on coal washing plants are checked for their validity at increased densities."

La difícil geografía de la ubicación de las minas de la Sierra no permite un espacio suficiente para el almacenamiento de relaves provenientes de las plantas concentradoras, generando áreas con muros costosos que permitan el transporte del relave. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del texto describe las medidas preventivas para resolver el problema de la falta de espacio para el relave de las concentradoras, al tiempo que evita la contaminación del rio Huallaga y se afecte las instalaciones agrícolas, industriales y sanitarias encontradas bajo las canchas de almacenamiento. Así, el problema de relaves en Atacocha se resolvió en dos etapas: la primera, utiliza los 1000 metros de largo del Río Huallaga, para desviarlo hacia un túnel de 1326 metros de largo, obteniendo un espacio para 2, 700, 000 T.M. de relaves, por un período de 7 años aproximadamente. La segunda etapa busca ejecutar el proyecto de Malauchaca, donde la confluencia del torrente de Ticlacayan con el río Huallaga, permitirá el desvío del río Huallaga sobre su margen izquierda por un túnel de 600 metros y en la orilla izquierda del torrente de Ticlacayán se construirá un muro de concreto, que cruzará el lecho del Huallaga hasta muy cerca de la salida del túnel, obteniendo un espacio de 900 metros en la quebrada del Huallaga y de 700 metros en la del Ticlacayán. A esto se suman las precauciones consideradas en los depósitos de relaves de cancha, tales como el control exhaustivo del chorro dentro del murete, la limpieza del rebose, separación del chorro con el rebose, tiempo de operación, cálculo del área de la cancha, construcción del murete, distancia de canchas de la concentradora y cierre de grietas en el período de descanso de las canchas.

La concentradora Antapaccay comenzó sus operaciones en noviembre del 2012. Como parte del proceso de puesta en marcha, se desarrolló la subetapa de este comisionamiento de los IsaMills, fundamentales en el circuito de remolienda. El circuito de remolienda consiste en dos IsaMills, uno para el concentrado rougher y otro para el concentrado scavenger. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe las ventajas encontradas en este equipo como el nivel de carga de medio de molienda, que es reflejado en el consumo de energía.

The flotation behavior of kaolinite and diaspore using N, N-diethyl dodecyl amine (DEN12) and N, N-dimethyl dodecyl amine (DRN12) as collector have been investigated through flotation experiments. The mechanism of adsorption of two tertiary amine collectors on surface of kaolinite and diaspore were investigated by FTIR spectral, Zeta potentials measurements and calculation of molecular orbital energy. It has been found that DEN12 and DRN12 have stronger collecting power to kaolinite and weaker collecting abilityto diaspore than DDA. Kaolinite and diaspore in bauxite ores can be separated by using DEN12 and DRN12 as collectors at pulp pH below 8 and 6, respectively. The results of zeta potentials and calculation of molecular orbital energy indicated that the adsorption strength on kaolinite surface is in the order DEN12>DRN12>DDA and the adsorption strength on diaspore surface is in the order DDA>DEN12>DRN12. FTIR spectral analysis and Zeta potentials approve that the action between kaolinite and tertiary amine collector is strong electrostatic adsorption and that of diaspore is weak electrostatic adsorption in the range of pH 5~6.

TO SERVE their primary function of balancing supply with demand. crude-oil prices must not only return full cost plus a reasonable earning to the efficient producer but they must also offer an additional reward to stimulate exploration sufficiently to maintain adequate reserves. High prices increase the volume and efficiency of exploration; low prig e- -Idle exploration. Over the last decade average prices for crude oil have been much lower than for the proceeding ten years, and lower even than the average over the life of industry. Under these circumstances no one should be surprised to learn that over this same recent period of discovery of new oil fields has also lagged and fallen below its average level for the previous decade. Crude oil prices have been too ion to support the required activity in wildcatting.

IF you would allow me some liberties, I would restate the title of this talk as "Scientific Research, Our Greatest Resource," because that title would represent more clearly a present-day conception of the metals and minerals situation. It is a subject worthy of careful consideration. Canada and the United States are so similar and interdependent in their national economies that, in the following discussion, examples of conditions in the United States may be interpreted to apply to Canada as well. Moreover, it is a striking fact that the per capita value of mineral production in Canada and the United States in 1940 was almost the same. Therefore, in the consideration of this subject, I have made no attempt to differentiate between the two countries. Consumption of the world's mineral resources in the last few decades. and particularly during World War II, has been so enormous as to require some form of magic to ensure the continued progress of civilization in the face of a diminishing supply of these resources which are so critically essential. ignitions caused by cutting tools have occurred at a rate of some 14 per year in UK coal mines since 1965, mostly on the coalface. The rate has held steady despite reducing output and number of collieries. Investigations were carried out over this period into factors affecting both the concentration of firedamp in the cutting zone and the igniting source. A study into detecting and suppressing ignitions on shearers has been undertaken and it is feasible to prevent certain ignitions from spreading outside the cutting zone. Practical measures have been adopted by British Coal to identify frictional ignition sites and to lay down working procedures to minimise risk.

MUCH has been published on the general subject of metal mine ventilation but, so far as I can discover, few specific data on selection of fan equipment to meet the requirements of a given mine ventilation problem are available. This article is intended to point out some of the more important considerations which influence the selection of such equipment. It will be assumed that the mine operator is able to determine the quantity of air which is necessary in the various parts of his mine to produce the required results and the pressure in inches water gage needed to circulate this quantity of air through the mine. There may be instances in which this assumption is not justified, but the fact remains that, with proper engineering talent, these data can be approximated sufficiently close for practical purposes.

Removal of moisture in steam-fluidized, mainly steam-heated, fluidized beds makes possible significant energy savings over conventional forms of large-scale drying. The systens are described and their applications to brown coal and alumina hydrate are reviewed. In application to brown coal the use of the system to permit meeting diurnal variation in power station output, and the use of triple-effect drying to minimise coal usage and to avoid the necessity of recovering in the turbines the energy in the steam from the last dryer are discussed. To facilitate the rapid adoption of the systems proposed, studies are being made of heat-transfer to dried coal, of moisture equilibrium in pressurized and vacuum systems, of tapered beds as a means of reducing carrier steam and permitting wider size variation, and of the use of carrier solids for drying lump materials.

Energy efficiency has become significant due to cost and environmental considerations. Comminution and material handling have been identified as the two most energy intensive processes in mining. The objective of this work was to evaluate truck-shovel energy efficiency strategies using discrete event modeling. Energy audits and time and motion studies were conducted at a surface coal mine to acquire data. A discrete event simulation model of truck-shovel operations was built in Arena® and validated with the field data. The model was used to evaluate the effect of using a larger shovel, and optimizing truck-shovel matching on fuel efficiency. The results indicate that using a larger excavator increases the fuel efficiency of the operation while optimizing truck-shovel matching does not. However, using a larger shovel will lead to under-utilization of the shovel. This work shows the potential benefits of using discrete event simulation to model energy efficiency of mining operations.

A seismic monitoring network has been installed in western Colorado (USA) in the vicinity of three underground coal mines to (i) distinguish and characterize seismic activity as either mining related or naturally occurring, (ii) implement a real-time event monitoring and notification tool, and (iii) collect data for use in research studies aimed at quantifying impacts from mining-related and natural seismicity. These potential impacts include dynamic rock mass failures such as coal bumps as well as strong shaking in the vicinity of critical structures such as impoundment dams, reservoirs, mine seals, mine openings, and steep slopes. Examples of two damaging seismic events are presented and the mining and geologic factors attending these dynamic failures are described.

It is merely a synopsis of some of the conclusions recently arrived at in regard to the stratigraphic and structural geology, compiled to act as a guide to those members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy attending the Queenstown meeting who are interested in economic geology. This report summarizes the activities performed and the results achieved during a two-phased investigation of the technical and economic feasibility of disposing of coal mine refuse underground in active mines, Three coal regions in the United States that are most severely affected by coal refuse disposal problems are identified: southwestern Pennsylvania, southern West Virginia, southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. For each region, a conceptual mine model is presented that describes the geologic conditions, mining methods, and environmental circumstances typical of that region. The model mine that was prepared for the Kanawha Region in Southwestern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky was selected as the basis for developing alternative conceptual designs of underground disposal systems in the second phase of this investigation. Procedures used in selecting the regions and in modeling typical mines are described in Part I of the report. Part II of the report describes existing methods for stowing refuse underground, presents three alternative conceptual designs of stowing system that would be appropriate for the model mine postulated in the first phase of the study, discusses technical characteristics and environmental effects relative to the various systems, and evaluates the technical and economic feasibility of the three alternative disposal system designs. Comparisons costs among systems and with costs or surface disposal are presented.

To improve the existing process of a large-scale scheelite concentrator in Jiangxi Province, this paper presents an advanced process æselective flotation of copper and flotation desulfurisation û rougher flotation of scheelite û heating-stirring and cleaning of rougher concentrate at normal temperature without reagent removalÆ. The test work was conducted on an ore sample containing 0.75 per cent tungsten (WO3), and the following technical indices were obtained: 1.03 per cent of the scheelite concentrate yield, 65.37 per cent of the concentrate grade and 86.31 per cent of WO3 recovery, indicating that the study achieved the objective of improving the tungsten recovery. The technical key of this process is to employ combined regulators and direct flotation of the slurry after being heated, which not only assured the technical indicators of beneficiation but also simplified the process.

New Device Eliminates Blasting in Coal A non-explosive device developed by duPont utilizes the high pressure of a gas generated inside a steel tube which is inserted in a hole drilled in a coal seam to break down the face of coal. Chemical reaction is started by an electric current which produces heat to initiate the action. The same heat destroys the starter wire as soon as electric current is no longer needed. The tube containing the chemical is closed at the outer end by a plug with electrical connections, and at the other with a disk that is ruptured by the compressed gases formed. When the gas has been liberated in sufficient quantities to create a desired pressure the disk breaks and the released gas breaks down the coal face. The new device is called a Chemechol.
