Most pyrometallurgical processes take place at high temperature with rapid chemical reactions when the elements and compounds are usually liquid or gaseous. Smelting. The classical method of obtaining a metal from its ore or concentrate is to smelt it in a furnace. The initial letter "s" of this word implies that, in addition to the physical process of melting, a chemical change also occurs. This is usually the reduction of metal oxide to metal by carbon or through a series of processes involving oxidation and reduction. Since solid-solid contact would not be sufficient to give a high rate of reaction, most smelting reactions occur by medium of two reactions involving solid-gaseous contact: where M represents a metal. The commonly preferred unit for carrying out these reactions is the blast furnace,1 which is a vertical shaft of refractory brick or water-cooled steel in which lumps of metal oxide and coke are fed at the top, and an air-blast is injected through tuyeres (water-cooled pipes) in the bottom. "A complete characterization of burrows from Mining district of Pachuca - Real del Monte, in Hidalgo state Mexico, was done. These kind of residues had not been formally characterized, founding an average chemical composition of 70.43 % wt. of Si02, 7.032 % wt. of Ah03, 2.69 % wt. of Fe20 3, 0.70 % wt. of Mn, 3.98 % wt. ofK20, 3.34 % wt. of CaO, 2.50 % wt. ofNa20, 1.01 % wt. of MgO, 0.26 % wt. of Ti02, 0.04 % wt. of Zn, 0.026 % wt. of Pb, 56 g/ton of Ag and 0.6 g/ton of Au; In the same way, the residues present as majority mineralogical phases the following: Quartz, Berlinite, Orthoclase, Feldspar, Anorthoclase and Calcite. By the other hand, joint with the big volume that present these residues and the chemical and mineralogical characteristics, these materials or sub - products can be used for production of ceramics, into mixes forming some materials for architecture (bricks, blocks, and tiles), refractory bricks, in the production of cement and to get some metallic values such as gold and silver involved in these residues.IntroductionActually the mining residues in Hidalgo State, Mexico are the result of more tan 500 years of mining, leading so a great volume of deposits, which we can classify in different types, among the most communes we have: Acid Mining Waters, Waters of solid transport and elements in the form of radicals, deposits of abandoned minerals without processing, and mining wastes of processed minerals known as burrows or dumps, being these the most abundant in the Hidalgo State [1-4].Form the metallurgical point of view, it is known that a characterization study if fundamental to find the viability of reuse of these kind of residues, leading so an additional use and the opportunity of get an alternative use into several industrial processes, due to its contents of oxides of silicon, iron, aluminum, calcium, sodium and potassium, principally, besides of its mineralogy and distribution of chemical elements into its primary and secondary phases [ 1-2, 5- 6]."

Settling a contract for process design involves a negotiation between the design engineers and the client. Clients wish to offload as much risk as possible by seeking various guarantees about the process performance. Design engineers respond with preconditions and qualifiers, believing that the risk must remain with those who stand to benefit. This paper presents the engineers? point of view on guarantee types and precedents, performance testing, damages that may be claimed, and remedies that can be provided with particular reference to the mining industry.

The island of Jamaica consists predominantly of Carbonate rocks which vary in chemical & physical characteristics. Currently these rocks are used for construction and road aggregate, landfill and as a raw material in the manufacture of cement. Over the past fifteen years the Geological Survey of Jamaica with assistance from a number of international aid agencies and the private sector have identified deposits of high calcium/high brightness limestones which have the potential to be utilized as a high quality filler and a number of other commercial applications. Geologically, these limestones are formed within the Eocene Swanswick Formation, the Oligocene Walderston-Browns Town Formation and to a lesser extent the Miocene Montpelier and Newport Formations.

"The 4c segment is a part of the ""Oman National Railway Project” linking the mining area in the surroundings of Thumrait and the port of Salalah. It is 90 km long and the last 40 km stretch crosses a mountainous area near the city of Salalah. The project includes the excavation of a 33 km double and single bore tunnel and 10 km of safety tunnels. This mountainous area is a holiday destination for Omanis, thanks to its beautiful landscapes, especially in summer time due to the monsoon rains. The tunnelling design had to take into account both these environmental constraints and the limestone rock formations crossed, which are affected by significant karst features. Given the context, the conventional tunnelling method has been preferred. INTRODUCTION The Oman Railway Project (Fig. 1) covers the construction of approximately 2,150 km of railway line for freight and passenger transport which will connect together Oman’s main towns and industrial sites and it will form part of the Arabian Peninsula railway system “GCC Project”. The non-electrified double-track railway line must guarantee a speed of 220 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains and must guarantee the transit of AAR (Association of American Railroad) H and D plates using clearance envelope according to AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association) requirements. The design alignment must have maximum radiuses of curvature of 3,250m and a maximum gradient of 1.0%. The project is divided into 9 constructional and functional segments. •,Segment 4c will be constructed in the southern region of Oman, close to the border with Yemen, to connect the town of Thumrait with the Port of Salalah. •,Segment 4c will run through the Dhofar region and will be mainly used by the freight traffic which currently travels by road."

A magnetogravimetric separation is the consequence of two competing forces with opposing directions, i.e., magnetic buoyancy and gravitation (or centrifugal force). While magnetic buoyancy is a function of particle volume, gravitational force depends on particle mass, thus permitting a separation according to specific gravity. Since magnetic buoyancy is not a phenomenon of common knowledge, this chapter is meant to briefly introduce the theory of magnetogravimetric separations. A particle that is suspended in a magnetic fluid which is exposed to an inhomogeneous magnetic field experiences a repulsive force -the so called magnetic buoyancy. In order to illustrate this effect, an analogy with the more familiar hydrostatic buoyancy is drawn. Hydrostatic buoyancy occurs due to unsymmetrical pressure distribution 'above' and 'below' a suspended particle (fig. 1).

Dealing with a trend in inverse distance estimation, IWD, is presented. A measurement is proposed to be consisted of a portion due to a mean and a portion due to a residual. The procedure consists of de-trending the measurement via a linear or nonlinear regression. Residuals are computed, and IWD parameter estimation is conducted on the residuals. Estimation at un-sampled points is then computed by estimating the mean and adding on the estimate of the IWD on the residual. A possible BOXCOX transform is also proposed.

A new portal and access drift was constructed by Concrete Constructions for BHPÆs Elouera Colliery, south of Wollongong.The portal area at the base of the Illawarra Escarpment is in soft colluvium material, underlain by highly to moderately weathered sandstone. The area has a well documented history of slope movement or slope creep and one of the main criteria for the design was to minimise disturbance to the unstable slope by limiting the excavation for the portal establishment. This was achieved by incorporating a sloped headwall and gabion wingwalls to accommodate the anticipated creep and groundwater seepage.Main features of the design process also included the provision of both primary and secondary support in a single shell application and the use of canopy tubes to provide support ahead of the tunnel face.The active involvement of the designer during the construction phase and the flexibility of the design concept allowed changes to the support methodology to be carried out as excavation proceeded.This paper describes the design process undertaken for portal establishment and access drift to cater for the variability of the exposed ground conditions along the drift alignment.

THREE GENERAL REASONS exist for applying metallic coatings to steel: to improve its appearance, to resist corrosion, and to resist wear and abrasion. Coating steel with other metals to improve the appearance and to resist corrosion is an old practice; coating for resistance to wear is one of the newer development's' that has become of importance with the development of chromium plating. Coating for improvement in appearance is practically confined to electroplating. Metals like copper, nickel, silver, chromium, cadmium, zinc and tin, because of their pleasing color, are used for this purpose. But these metals are never quite corrosion-proof, except cadmium and zinc, when applied directly to steel. Improvement in color or appearance must be permanent and therefore corrosion-resistant and tarnish-proof. For this reason, with the exception of cadmium, zinc and tin, the above metals are used in combination to obtain appearance and resistance to corrosion. Resistance to tarnish is dependent on the property of the particular metal. Chromium, being nontarnishable, has made it possible to obtain combination coatings of copper, nickel and chromium, copper and chromium, or nickel and chromium, which improve the appearance and also resist corrosion and tarnish. Such coatings find a wide field in decorative work particularly the copper-nickel-chromium combinations, and when properly applied are very satisfactory.

WITH Thomas G. Fear, chairman of the Coal Di- vision, presiding, the coal miners opened their program Monday morning with a general session at which three papers were presented. The first, "The Classification of Coal for Stationary Steam Generation," was presented by the author, Thomas W. Harris, Jr. In discussion, H. T. Coates inquired if it would not be possible to pick out a geographical coal section, certain seams or a group of mines, which would rank high in a desired feature or features, perhaps giving different -- - local sections or different mines something to designate a rating ("good," "fair," and "poor"). This might be done relative to anti-clinkering, free-burning, ,anti-slagging, smokelessness, friability and grindability. These might be listed or arranged on a map or diagram so that the prospective customer could find a coal that rated particularly high in desired characteristics. C. A. Reed pointed out, in part, that coal producers and sellers have found a bad but necessarily present condition in the country, especially with the smaller user of coal. This is entirely due to the fact that the employer expects his purchasing representative to be a genius and have expert knowledge of everything he buys, coal included, whereas in the larger plants he has and uses expert knowledge from the active organization when necessary. J. B. Morrow said that size rating was important in classifying coal and he emphasized that it was impossible to come to a definite basis on analysis alone.

In CaC12-CaF 2 System, we studied the electrode process and discharge mechanism of preparation of Al-Ca alloys by fused salt electrolysis with CaO as raw material. The change of back electromotive force after adding CaO was measured by continuous pulse oscillograph method and the discharge process mechanism was also investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The finial results indicate that back electromotive force decreases by 0.6V after CaO of 1 % is added and there was a peak of oxidation current ahead of the potential at which the negative chlorine ions precipitated. According to thermodynamic calculation, it was determined that current peak was caused by the CO2 produced by 0 2 - ionic discharge due to CaO addition.

The Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) has been providing venture capital for start-up companies since 1907. Ninety years' experience in the junior mining industry has enabled the VSE to develop policies and procedures tailored to the unique needs of start-up companies. Policies and procedures applicable to listed companies are documented in the Corporate Finance Services Department "Policy and Procedures Manual." Approximately 50% of the companies listed on the VSE are in the mineral exploration and development business. The largest number are exploring base metal, precious metal or diamond properties. A recent count shows that about 20 companies are exploring industrial mineral or non-metallic deposits. The minerals sought by these companies include limestone, decorative stone, building stone, lava rock, wollastonite, zeolite, garnet and graphite. There are two basic routes to obtaining VSE financing for an industrial mineral property. The owner can either sell an interest in the property to a listed company or form a company and have it listed on the VSE. In each instance, the listed company is responsible for raising funds to develop the property. A typical financing consists of the sale of company securities byway ofeitherprivate placement or prospectus offering.

"INTRODUCTION The float-and-sink test 5/6/ is generally the first test used in determining the washing characteristics of coal. The simplest form of the test is that of using one solution of such specific gravity that the test sample is separated into ""float"" and ""sink"" fractions. In practice, however, a series of solutions is used, and the sample is separated into a number of fractions of a definite specific-gravity range. Analyses of a series of fractions of this type are often referred to as the ""specific-gravity analysis,"" and are of great value in the selection, construction, and operation of commercial washing equipment.The test is rather simple to use, provided a number of conditions are recognized and as many as possible held constant, such as:1. In laboratory testing, two types of solution are available -Aqueous solutions of calcium and zinc chlorides.Mixtures of organic liquids such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, gasoline, bromoform, etc.2. Absorption of the solution by the coal,3. Solvent action of the solution toward the coal.4. Constancy of specific gravity during the test is affected by temperature changes, dilution, and evaporation.5. Personal technique of the test, such as the time the coal is in the liquid, rate of adding the sample to the liquid, stirring, time of draining, etc.6. Moisture content of the coal as tested."
