The former mayor of Los Angeles, CA is a believer in public transportation but thinks neither his city nor the entire country is spending enough on basic infrastructure. In fact, the United States has fallen behind most other developed nations in improving public transportation, the former mayor said. Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, held June 22-25 in Los Angeles, CA. The event, held every two years, is sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This years? conference attracted 1,091 underground construction professionals from around the world. The accompanying exhibition continues to grow, attracting 142 exhibiting companies occupying 162 booths. As always at NAT, registered attendees received the proceedings volume of the conference, which contains 132 papers. The proceedings volume, including a CD of the papers, is available from SME for $149 member, $139 student member and $189 nonmember. Using a fluidized, countercurrent multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) column previously developed by the Bureau of Mines, Bureau researchers have successfully extracted uranium from a simulated acidic in situ leach liquor that contained 150 ppm U30s? This successful demonstration of the MCIX system is reported, and the effects of varying the operating conditions on the performance of the system are also examined. Operating the MCIX system with a flow rate of 15 gpm/ft2 and an aqueous-to-resin flow ratio of 200:1, more than 90 percent of the uranium Has extracted, and a resin containing approximately 28 grams U308 per liter was produced. The absorption column used to investigate the operating variables was approximately 18 feet long with a 2-inch ID and was divided into compartments that were 1 foot long.

In a comparison of the creep -rupture properties of nickel in air arid in vacuum there is a reversal in relative strengths with variations in stress. At low stresses the properties are better in air while at high stresses they are better in vacuum. In the early stages of creep in a high stress test the specimen in air nzay have the lower creep rate but the one in vacuum is creeping at a lower rate in the later stages. A mechanism, involving two competing processes in terms of oxidation strengthening and weakening by surface-energy reduction, is proposed to explain these reversals. It had generally been assumed that, relative to their properties in air, the high-temperature strengths of metals would be increased in an inert atmosphere as a result of the elimination of the deteriorating effects of oxidation. However, several recent investigations have shown that the creep strength may be greater in air than in nonoxidizing gases. Pickus and Parker1 found that the creep rate of nickel was lower in air than in hydrogen or nitrogen. Internal oxidation was mentioned by Shepard and Schalliol as a possible cause for the longer creep life of Hastelloy C in air than in vacuum or helium. Sweetland and Parker, who observed lower creep rates for aluminum and copper in air than in helium, discuss the possible applicability of the dislocation-barrier mechanism to explain their results. Surface oxide layers may interfere with the escape of dislocations through the surface or with their generation there. In addition to showing the strengthening in air of low-alloy and stainless steel, and nickel and cobalt-base alloys, shahinian4 presented notch-effect data which indicate the role of stress concentrations; alloys of relatively low ductility were more sensitive to atmosphere strengthening when notched specimens were used. Although Bleakney's copper wires had a lower reduction of area in air than in vacuum, it is difficult to interpret his results in terms of strength changes since the stresses employed were not measured. In contrast to these data showing the strengthening in air, a number of investigations, most at relatively low temperatures, have demonstrated that the environment may cause a decrease in strength. These results are generally explained in terms of the effect of environment on surface energy. In a review of the subject, Benedicks and Harden use the concept of atomic bonding to explain how the adsorption of impurities would decrease the energy of a clean surface. A decrease in surface energy would facilitate the propagation of cracks or extension of the surface. Use of this mechanism is made by sato7 to explain the weakening of steel specimens bent in various liquids, by Potek and Shcheglakovs for the reduction of fracture strength of steel in molten metal, and by Benedicks and Harden for the reduction of strength of a variety of materials in a number of liquids. A similar explanation might be used for the results of Forestier and Clauss. The fracture stress of fine wires pulled in a variety of gases, including air, is lower than in vacuum. They attributed their results to the "tendency" for the gases to condense on the metal surface. That the strength of metals is affected by the type of gas in which the test is conducted has been demonstrated convincingly; the mechanism of the effect, however, is still uncertain. This investigation represents one in a series to explore the influence of variations in alloy composition and test conditions on the atmosphere effect in the expectation that the results would afford an insight into the processes taking place. At the Sullivan Mine, recent experience with sulphide fires, locally referred to as " hot muck", has necessitated extensive modifications to pillar mining design and operating procedures. Potentially hot pillars are now being designed and mined to prevent fires. Unusual safety hazards and difficulties are encountered in working with, and adjacent. to, existing pillar fires. Operating procedures developed for these conditions have proved successful for safe and continuing production. These changes have minimized the impact of hot ore on current operations and have promise for an improved future.

Lime Cement column stabilization of soft clay and sand in Salt Lake City, Utah and in San Francisco California is described and discussed. Stabilization permitted the construction, in a single stage, of a 14 m MSE wall on "medium" clay in Salt Lake City. It was used to mitigate the potential for liquefaction in San Francisco and to stabilize the Young Bay Mud beneath the BART extension to San Francisco Airport. These applications are described and the field measurements of performance are reported.

THE Company maintains a port agency at Antofagasta for dispatching copper and also for receiving from ocean vessels the vast variety of materials and supplies required at the plant. Copper shipments from the oxide plant refinery to Antofagasta amounted to 162,000 metric tons during 1951, while incoming freight totalled 175,000 metric tons. Electrolytic market copper in various shapes is currently loaded at the plant upon 20 or 30-ton cars of the meter-gage Antofagasta-Bolivia Railroad, to be transported a distance of 165 miles to the company's yard at Antofagasta. Here it is unloaded by cranes at the rate of about 175 tons per hr. Copper not scheduled for immediate shipment is stocked in tiers within the yard, but most of it is reloaded and sent to port works or a wharf serving lighters. Some of the vessels entering Antofagasta tie up at the port works, while others anchor inside the breakwater. In the latter case, all of the loading into the hatches is from 50-ton lighters towed to the vessel. When the vessel is at the dock, about half of the copper is loaded by port works cranes and the other half is loaded by ship's tackle from lighters. Fuel Oil Requirement Expands One of the innovations caused by the construction of the sulphide plant has been the necessity to provide facilities at Antofagasta for receiving and storing greater quantities of fuel oil than in recent years. From here it is loaded into tank cars for transportation to Chuquicamata. The older installation consisted of a 10-in. submarine pipe line, heating, and pumping facilities, a 67,500-bbl storage tank, and railroad loading rack, located at Antofagasta's northern limits. Two new tanks, of 80,000 and 30,000-bbl capacity respectively, have now been added and a second submarine pipe line will shortly be installed. Fuel oil requirements for the sulphide plant are estimated at 39,000 bbl per month, in addition to which 9000 bbl per month are required for the operation of the oxide plant. The company has a special lighter which is used by its diver for connecting the oil line with the oil tanker when disembarking oil, this lighter also being used for inspecting and overhauling buoys, as well as for recovery of bars of copper which are sometimes dropped into the bay when loading vessels during periods of rough weather. Transport of oil to Chuquicamata is by 76 tank cars of, 20-ton capacity and 20 of 30-ton capacity, all assigned to the company's fuel oil shipments excepting six for Diesel oil and one for gasoline. Incoming Freight Other freight received by the port agency has been averaging about 4800 metric tons per month of operating supplies for the oxide plant (renewals of equipment, spare parts, lubricating oils, and greases, etc.), some 1900 metric tons per month for the company stores, and about 6000 metric tons per month of materials and equipment for the construction of the sulphide plant. The greater part of these shipments (particularly the operating and construction supplies) originate from abroad, and must be handled through the Chilean Customs. Hence the company maintains a Customs storage warehouse (goods pending appraisal of Customs duties) in addition to its other storage facilities at Antofagasta. Not the least of the Port Agency's duties is to meet air and steamer passengers en route to Chuquicamata and to arrange for their trips up the hill. Landing in a strange country with a strange language, the first impressions of a new employee might otherwise be indeed confusing when facing Antofagasta's unique setting of brown barren hills.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

In-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT ?IR/IRS) has been extended to study oleate adsorption at a calcite surface. The birefringent and transmission limitations of calcite were overcome by using an appropriately designed optical setup and a near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. An adsorption isotherm was determined at pH 9.2 and room temperature. Comparison with the fluorite/oleate adsorption isotherm determined by the same technique indicates that oleate abstraction by calcite can be as much as one order of magnitude larger than that by fluorite. Nevertheless, the hydrophobicity of the fluorite/oleate surface is greater for equivalent adsorption densities as indicated by contact angle measurements and flotation results. The monolayer region has been confirmed to be chemisorbed oleate at both calcite and fluorite surfaces. Furthermore, multichannel laser Raman spectroscopy (MLRS) showed that chemisorbed oleate at the fluorite surface undergoes a double-bond reaction with oxygen to form an epoxide/polyether complex. Such a reaction, however, could not be detected at the calcite surface. These phenomena are discussed in terms of the intrinsic surface properties of the mineral systems as well as the adsorption density and the cross-linking/polymerization reaction of the adsorbed oleate film.

Classical acid-base accounting using modified Sobek titration methods has resulted in interpretation of results for materials with neutralization potential (NP) less than 20 tons of CaCO3/1000 tons of material (2% CaCO3) as "uncertain" due to lack of sensitivity within that content range. Standardization of a "fizzless" acid neutralization potential (ANP) method was undertaken in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International using two ranges of sulfuric acid additions based on reaction pH and carbonate carbon estimates rather than subjective fizz testing as well as hydrogen peroxide additions to correct for mineral acidity. The method is identified as the acid neutralization potential acidity (ANPA) titration method. During interlaboratory testing a positive bias was discovered within the "uncertain" range which was further investigated and resolved by increasing the test sample weight from one to five grams for samples needing improved accuracy in materials with ANP <2% CaCO3. Test results from the interlaboratory testing of the low range method is presented and compared with the results from the original ANPA method in the paper.

WHEN mining and treatment first started at Broken Hill only oxidised ores were available. These ores were rich in silver and lead-the silver mainly existing as chloride and the lead as carbonate.Treatment processes aimed mainly at the recovery of silver, lead being regarded as a by-product, and its recovery, except in so far as it affected silver recovery, was of minor importance.The first ore mined was carted to Terowie and thence railed to Melbourne, being smelted by the Intercolonial Smelting and Refining Co., of Spotswood.The first parcel (50 tons) returned &#163;7442, or &#163;148 16s. per ton to the Broken Hill Proprietary Company.The second parcel of 1053 tons, smelted at the Day Dream smelter, returned 132,142 oz. of silver, but no record is available as to its lead content.These results obtained from two parcels showed that by smelting the ore a handsome profit could be obtained, and Mr. La Monte was engaged to erect two 30-ton Nevada water jacket blast furnaces on Block 13. The Piedmont province of the southern Appalachians is becoming the focus of interest for many exploration geologists. In the past, only those deposits with significant surface exposure have been exploited. Thus, few deposits have been found and relatively little exploration has been conducted in recent years. Modern geochemical and geophysical techniques can alleviate this problem of concentrating on exposed ore bodies by allowing us to "look through" the soil and saprolite to detect the presence of significant mineralization at depth. This paper will attempt to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of several geo¬chemical exploration techniques in the Piedmont, of Cabarrus and Stanly Counties, North Carolina. The area chosen for the study is shown in Figure 1, lying almost wholly within the Mt. Pleasant quadrangle, North Carolina. The area is on the eastern boundary between the Charlotte belt, a zone of plutonic and intermediate grade metamorphic rocks, and the Carolina Slate belt, a series of complexly interbedded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of predominantly low grade metamorphism. The area is now considered to be a 500 million year old active, continental margin.1 As is typical of most of the piedmont, outcrop is sparse. Figure 2 is a sketch map of the general geology of the area under study, showing the Charlotte belt rocks in the northwestern quadrant and slate belt rocks, to the east. Within the area are a number of old mines and prospects, the most famous of which are the Furniss and the Phoenix mines in Cabarrus County. All are reported to have contained Au and Cu. Ag and Pb were reported from some. A summary of the deposits is given in Table 1. Data used in this study are from three Master&apos;s theses conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 3,3,6 In separate studies, well waters5, B-zone soils3, and vein and float quartz6 from the area described were sampled and analyzed. The adjacent towns of Rouyn and Noranda, centers of the Rouyn mining district of western Quebec, are 360 miles by air line almost duo north of Toronto. Rouyn is reached from the main lines of the Canadian National Railways and the Canadian Pacific Railway at North Bay, Ontario, by the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway and its subsidiary, the Nipissing Central Railway. Noranda is the southwestern terminus of a branch from the Canadian National Railway between Winnipeg and Quebec. The Rouyn mining district is a part of a mineralized zone that has been traced for a distance of 140 miles from Kirkland Lake in Ontario eastward into the Province of Quebec to the Pascalis district. From Rouyn the mine is 5 miler almost duo south over a gravel rend built by the company with assistance from the Province of Quebec.

Sulfide impurities in iron ore concentrates play an important role in designing pelletising and steel making plants. Therefore attempts are made to keep the sulfur content of the final concentrate produced by the plants as low as possible. Generally, in the beneficiation process of iron ore concentrate, the removal of sulfur is performed through magnetic separation systems, followed by reverse flotation. The sulfide content of the iron ore concentrates originated from two main sources, including pyrite and pyrrhotite. In this research, in order to compare the floating capability of these two types of sulfide minerals, two iron ore concentrates with different sulfide constituents, pyrite or pyrrhotite, were selected. Reverse flotation tests were done separately on these samples under similar conditions. Process parameters considered for the tests included pH (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10), collector consumption (150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 g/t) and frother consumption (40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 g/t). Potassium Amyl Xanthate (PAX) and Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC) were the collector and frother used in the tests, respectively. For modelling and optimising process parameters, the Central Composite Design (CCD) method was applied to the test results. Empirical coded equations were obtained for responses involving weight recovery, Fe recovery, Fe grade and S grade. Finally, comparison of test results revealed that the elimination recovery of pyrite sulfides was far greater than pyrrhotite sulfides, and it was possible to remove 84% sulfur content of the pyrite sample compared to minus 30% for the pyrrhotite sample. Operational monitoring of slope stability can be achieved by space based InSAR monitoring platforms. Natural and man-made rock slopes are monitored using a novel stack-based InSAR method that exploits both persistent point scatterers (PS) as well as coherent distributed scatterers (DS) such as areas of pavement and sparsely vegetated surfaces. The new method, Homogenous Distributed Scatterer (HDS)-InSAR identifies InSAR targets by using adaptive multilooking of statistically homogenous pixel neighbourhoods combined with thresholding the differential temporal coherence of each target candidate with respect to its surroundings. HDS-InSAR preserves PS and therefore forms a direct generalization to our proven DualScale-PSI method. The density of HDS exceeds that of PS by more than an order of magnitude often providing essentially continuous coverage over urban and industrial landscapes featuring a mix of infrastructure with mostly bare soils or rock surfaces. The improved coverage enables better definition of surface motion and underlying geology, which will lead to superior interpretation of the geophysical mechanisms causing the surface deformation, e.g. through improved integration with 3D deformation modeling. We illustrate the performance of our new HDS-InSAR method compared to DualScale-PSI using displacement results from Vancouver, Canada; Bingham mine, USA; and the Palabora mine, South Africa.

In this study, with the primary goal of capturing ongoing digital transformation and automation impacts on the mining industry and its workforce, we conduct several interviews with mining industry experts in the United States and analyze our survey reports qualitatively and quantitatively through exploratory analysis. After the interpretation of the insights of industry experts, we proceed to generate a personalized and customized data analysis through a novel metric based on skills, knowledge, competencies and occupational requirements, which quantifies the job similarities for occupations in the mining industry based on the publicly available database of the U.S. Department of Labor. We use text analytics to tokenize and classify the interviews to capture a better understanding of major response categories. The temporal analysis shows that the critical competency needs in the data science and autonomy category increases from 28 percent in current demands to 43 percent. In defining our metric, we also calculate Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence for each job profile that enables determining whether and to what extent that job is transitionary in our test set based on the mean, standard deviation and kurtosis of each job of interest. Our analysis reveals that the in-group job transitions are significantly easier than the between-group transitions, proving our initial assumptions and common sense. The generated heat maps provide the opportunity to present the gap between the current job and desired job profiles that provide feasible career change options, among others, offering individualized career paths for job seekers and promoting potential job transitions. Through the collection of industry-specific individual employee data, the AI system is envisaged to continue to learn as end users engage with the system, thus creating a central data hub specifically for the future workforce in the mining industry. Although the study has limitations on generalizability for qualitative assessments, it presents itself as a valuable application of how qualitative and quantitative approaches could be of value for future worker training in the mining sector.

This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design. INTRODUCTION Until recently, gamma doses had been largely ignored in Ontario uranium mines. This has been due to the assumption that these doses are small and have been more or less unchanged with time and hence their effects have been included automatically in the epidemiological studies that led to the establishment of radon daughter exposure limits. This assumption had to be challenged for two basic reasons. The first was that radon daughter exposures to miners have been progressively reduced over the years due to improved ventilation and ever more stringent regulations, while gamma exposures have presumably remained relatively unchanged. Therefore it must be assumed that the ratio of gamma to radon daughter exposure has gone up. The second reason is more philosophical. It is clearly inappropriate to make judgements on the significance of a potential industrial hazard when the magnitude of that hazard has not been fully assessed. Having decided that some sort of assessment of gamma exposures to uranium miners must be made, it was than necessary to determine how this should be done. Several options were available, for instance: (i) Wholesale personal gamma dosimetry for all mine and mill workers, (ii) Personal gamma dosimetry only for those workers suspected of receiving the higher doses, coupled with area monitoring to estimate the exposures of other workers, (iii) Area monitoring coupled with dose rate times time calculations for all. This would correspond to the generally prevalent method of assessing radon daughter exposures. It was argued that since radon daughter exposures are the major radiological hazard in uranium mines, to invest resources for assessing a lesser hazard to a greater degree of precision was not cost effective. (iv) Since gamma dose rate is related to ore grade, individual doses could be assigned from knowledge of work location and ore grade. Before deciding which of these options would be most appropriate, it was necessary to have some idea of the magnitude of the problem. Very few data were available in the literature and with the exception of a few spot dose rate measurements, and the results of a few gamma dosimeters issued to selected individuals by some of the mining companies, nothing was available. A rule of thumb of obscure origin is often quoted within the industry indicating that gamma dose rates underground will be about 0.25 mR/h per lb/ton or 5 mR/h per % U. This had been used by some to justify neglecting gamma radiation at least for ore grades of the order of 0.1% or 2 lb/ton, on the grounds that gamma dose rates would be of the order of 0.5 mR/h and therefore give rise to annual doses of only about 10 mSv (lrem). That is, it was assumed that gamma radiation was of limited concern compared to the hazard associated with the inhalation of radon daughters. We were thus faced with the situation of just assuming that no regulatory limits were being breached. This situation could not be allowed to continue. A program was initiated to investigate the gamma doses absorbed by uranium miners in three mines in Ontario, and extensive gamma surveys were conducted in the Quirke 2 mine of Rio Algom Ltd, Elliot Lake; Denison Mine, Elliot Lake; and Agnew Lake Mine, Espanola. Negative reaction was received from several mine company officials to the possibility of all miners being required to wear personal gamma dosimeters due to the logistical difficulties involved, and therefore part of the project was aimed at determining if a reliable correlation between gamma dose rate and ore grade in the work location could be deduced, in order that dose rate times time calculations might be used for gamma dose assessments. The results of these programs provided evidence that the gamma dose for some employees in the three mines investigated may be a significant fraction of the current maximum permissible annual dose of 50mSv (5 rem). When combined with radon daughter exposures in the manner recommended by the ICRP at their 1980 Brighton meeting (ICRP 80) the results indicated that some individuals will come close to the resulting limit and may even exceed it.
